Reviews of The Head of Steam
J. W.
Welcoming bar with a good choice of cask and keg, with the environment feeling inviting and comfortable. It's hard to see the beer choice though if customers sit in front of pumps, needs a list on a blackboard or Untappd perhaps. But, nonetheless, a lovely venue and would recommend.
E. W.
Chain places wouldn’t really be my thing, but I absolutely loved head of steam!!!! They do fab cocktails. Craft beers and some really good food and I just LOVED their interior, such W cool vibe!!!!
T. G.
One of the best bar's I've been to in the UK. No fuss - just a great beer selection and a fantastic team, with some great Rock 'n' Roll on the sound system. Highly recommended!
w. t.
Just perfect place for great beer at a fair price. I finished my night out at the Head of Steam after visiting a lot of places. Btw atmosphere was really cool.
There is a well stocked bar upstairs with craft beer and local microbrewery cask ales which rotate regularly. Downstairs, there is often live music or a club night, especially on weekends. The bottle selection is reliably good.
L. B.
Perfect recommendation on an after work pint from Luke, knew exactly what was available and tailored it perfectly! Awesome team here on nights at the head of steam, especially after walking out of a hospitality job yourself… maybe some better snacks?
A. L.
One of my favourite places in Newcastle!! Amazing atmosphere, amazing staff, good drinks. They even got in my favourite when I asked them too! Much recommend, very chilled!
M. A.
Always a pleasure to get blasted here. Class selection of beers spirits and you can always venture down to the basement to check out some love bands.
Phil topham always does the deed when it comes to a great service as well 🤘
D. A.
Good array of local brews and a nice variety of drinks. Bit cramped but that's more due to the popularity of this place.
A. S.
Head of Steam is an excellent little venue, who host small up-and-coming artists and bands. The music/sound quality is good, though depending on the band, can be a little loud - ear plugs are recommended.
Standing space can be limited on the floor, and the view is slightly limited if you stand next to the bar at the back. The bar stocks a good selection of alcohol.
G. G.
Fine, with some good beers. Staff friendly enough but atmosphere a bit meh.
D. d. a.
The thing is they have good beer. the bar staff are just rude. We gave them a second chance but the thing is.. aparently to get a job here.. you have to have a reference saying you are rude. Is what it is.🙄🙄🙄
S. C.
Great pub and easy to access just across the road from the metro. Friendly staff and an incredible beer selection.
M. C.
If you like your beer, and I don't mean fizzy lager, then you'd best get yourself here sharpish.
A glorious amount of different beers to choose from, and something for everyone.
G. G.
Brilliant looking bar, really friendly staff. The drinks were alright, nothing too special from what I could see. Still, I'd recommend if you haven't been before, I'm sure I'll be back.
S. P.
I don't do ales, but this seems like a decent ale house. I stuck with lager and whisky, both of which they have plenty of! Friendly, helpful staff, and a proper, not loud, non-imposing environment. If you want to go somewhere with friends and not have excessive noise, this is cool.
S. R.
Good beer, good people. That's all you want from a pub.
M. M.
This is a nice place to meet up with friends. The staff are friendly and accommodating. There is a good selection of real ale available at the bar along with your stannary lagers. It can get busy here of an evening. Odd seating arrangement with the tables built in to the seats. The toilets are clean and decent.
M. C.
This pub has had a refurbishment quite recently which was much needed. It always had great beer at a fair price but used to smell! Now it's a lot better and being open until 3am most nights, I have often found that when I visit Newcastle, we finish our nights out at the Head of Steam.
There is a well stocked bar upstairs with craft beer and local microbrewery cask ales which rotate regularly. The bottle selection is reliably good.
Downstairs, there is often live music or a club night, especially on weekends.
A. B.
Great little venue downstairs and the bar upstairs is cosy with a brilliant selection of drinks
J. R.
Not really a bar I hit regularly, however it is indeed very popular and has been so for a long time. Decor is good, much better than it once was. A haunt for a mixed crowd absolutely, but many musicians and students frequent the joint. I might visit once or twice a year absolute max, then return several years later and repeat. Still, it is a fully time served venue thats worth a look in and if you're heading for a train, take a turbo diversion and fire one in here perhaps?
A. T.
Decent, good beer, allows dogs
K. F.
I always love coming in here. There is an excellent selection of drinks and the staff are very pleasant courteous. It's always busy, so many must be under the same impression as me.
The background music always seems to be to my liking and it's a good spot for live bands too.
T. E.
Love this joint. Cheery staff and a good selection of taps upstairs, and they often play funk downstairs on the dancefloor. I only wish they hasn't added the stupid little attached-tables to the seating upstairs, as they actually prevent the seating space from being used. They're a terrible design, and should really just go. I almost knocked off a star for it, but I love the place too much otherwise.
K. B.
A great pub that serves all different drinks the staff are really friendly here the bouncers are great. If your new to Newcastle a great pub to meet in you should feel warm and safe. Fridays and Saturdays they have there more club music down stairs. Drinks are fair priced never had a spot of trouble while there myself.
J. G.
Solid HOS. Super cosy upstairs area feeling like a German pub with as you’d expect a plethora of beer on tap/canned and bottled. Downstairs a fantastic live music area. Super for seeing a little gig. Toilets locked via pin lock, ask at the bar for the code.
Y. R.
Dropped in after the Iron Maiden gig at the Metro for a nightcap. Packed with rockers from the gig, all after a drink and no trouble at all. All the staff wore Maiden shirts and were knocking out Trooper Ale with Maiden playing in the background, nice touch, know your market. Quite a sizable place on three floors with what looked like a live venue/club room downstairs. Huge selection of beers, staff were fast so didn't have to wait long. Winner.
D. G.
Gteat staff, good range of beers, conducive to conversations & reasonably priced ale. Open till late as well.
B. B.
My favorite pub chain! Always offers a fantastic range of drinks from all around the world! Always clean, good music and friendly knowledgeable staff. Id always reccomend.
G. N.
Lovely atmosphere, good mix of ages, music not too loud and great beer.
N. R.
Excellent pub, good atmosphere, friendly staff and lots of beers.
J. T.
Real ales .cans.btles.draught.
Enjoyed at drink here and a chat as no loud music. (Think the system was off)
Recently refurbished bar.clean.warm.friendly.
Toilet facilities down stairs to bar opposite entrance. I believe there is a lift available.
Live music is played here.
Well worth a visit.
Situated outside of train station.over the road and head down to the right.
R. R.
Favourite pub in Newcastle, excellent selection of drinks, staff are friendly and you can craic on with them. Alternatives to your mainstream lagers are served here, I always end up trying something new every time I'm in.
P. B.
Since the refurb, this place has gone from a 3 Star to a 5 Star for me! The range of craft beer and ale are still unbeatable and with the updated, yet still quirky, interior it makes having a pint in here much more enjoyable. Good job!
R. M.
Was in the downstairs area for a gig, although it's quite small it's a great place for live music as the sound is amazing. Now for the downside, there's no draught beers or lager only cans of red stripe which are £4.10 each.
I. B.
Always liked this bar. Nice atmosphere. Good meeting place for drink and conversation. Too much wood cladding. The crowd that get in arent mainstream. So if thats what you want go somewhere else.
O. S.
Lovely little pub in the centre of Newcastle friendly staff and punters..
S. B.
Great atmosphere large variety of drinks and excellent music
R. C. (. W. W.
It's a great place for a late night pint, could pick better ciders though
A. D.
Smelt abit funky but the beer was nice
J. D.
Nice indie feel to this upstairs micropub, and often less crowded than the Newcastle Tap next door. 5 cask ales plus a wide variety of keg beers and cans.
G. Z.
A nice place to drink your pints. Wide range of beers and friendly environment. Also the prices are reasonalbe. You can sit outside and enjoy your drinks if you are a smoker. I recommend this place.
L. T.
Surprisingly, from my experience this is a place for love to blossom. I met my now fiance, the beautiful, talented and intelligent Stephanie, for our very first date here where i watered her with the strongest and perhaps the most expensive beer i've ever bought. This seemed to work.
A few months later my mate Peter met his now fiance, horse whisperer and queen of organising, Mandy.
The selection of beer here is immense, although there is quite a price to pay for such a selection. They have bands and club nights in their grungy (in a good way) basement room. This is now one of my preferred venues in Newcastle.
M. B.
A cosy upstairs bar with plenty of great beers from local Wylam Brewery on draught and cask. Plus a good bottled selection. It's a small bar with great atmosphere just by central station. Well worth checking out.
k. l.
Always great and the selection of good quality beers was extensive
K.
Very fun especially when the dance floor opens on a weekend. Very chill atmosphere, very chill people. Prices for beer are okay depending on what you get
J. H.
Amazing staff and atmosphere. Staff were great when 50+ of our group pretty much took over the place .
g. v.
Missed my train from Newcastle to Glasgow and had a warm welcome nice cold pint recommended so much
A. O.
Really nice bar and welcoming staff. The beer prices are a little expensive though.... but that's a nationwide problem due to supermarkets and tax I guess. Not complaining otherwise.
R. V.
Fantastic place. The bar staff where increably friendly and helpful, and the range of beers they had was top notch. I couldn't recommend this place enough.
M. L.
Great for live music. Saw a band called mosaic sun downstairs and they were superb. Excellent atmosphere and good beers..What more do you need..
A. R.
An amazing bar with equally amazing and enthusiastic staff. Wide range of beers and other drinks. Live music downstairs and a great pub atmosphere upstairs.
m. h.
In all fairness the beer is expensive and an aquired taste but as luck would have it if you use your p's and t's thay will happley give you a tester of the drinks availble it a quine cosey place and defentley worth poping into super smashing grate place to go
A. “. G.
Just dropped in for a beer with a mate. Very knowledgeable staff who can advise on their huge array of beers. Fantastic place!
L. R.
A truly excellent choice of beers and ciders, and a long-standing stalwart of Newcastle's nightlife, combining a decent pint and good bands. Recommended.
L. E.
A local legend, an iconic pub with everything you would want to drink and friendly be is an understatement for the staff. Glad to see after a decade they are still as great as they were 👍
J. G.
Fabulous place with fantastic staff!
J. T.
Quiet bar.tastefully decorated.
Clean.good facilities.
Live music played at times.

J. D.
A great place to go for a pint after the refurbishment. A wide selections of beers and ciders with friendly attentive staff.
L. F.
A cracking pub for a few drinks at any time of the day or night. Good range of keg and cask beers to suit all tastes, served by courteous and friendly staff.
A. T.
Great pub, benefited from a refit a few years back, beer is always of a good standard, venue downstairs is low ceiling, sweaty and excellent
S. F.
Quirky little venue and super loud downstairs! Nice staff and drinks arent amazingly expensive like some other places. Cool place.
D. C.
One of my favourite bars in Newcastle. A stone throw away from the train station. Has the best beer in the world: Delirium Tremens.
S. h.
Great atmosphere and good selection of drinks
M. S.
One of the best bars in the town they have a fabulous choice of wine beer and cider a must for a night out
P. M.
Great real ale pub opposite Newcastle station. Excellent lineup of ales, lagers, spirits etc. Comfortable with a nice environment/decor.
C.
Brilliant selection of beers. Floor and seating space are very limited so it can get fairly crowded.
P. T.
Friendly staff, good selection of drinks and regularly rotate the ale's they have on tap.
C. C.
Nice sized bar near central station that doesn't get too busy. Hoppy beers on tap are a bit hit or miss.
D. M.
I'm not sure I like the newly redecorated Head Of Steam. Whilst the gents toilets are infinitely better, the beer selection still excellent, the staff as friendly as ever, upstairs is too bright and the seating a little awkward.
I miss the sticky floors.
E. L.
Nice little bar with a good selection of drinks
