Reviews of The Head of Steam Quayside
I. B.
Very nice bar, very good selection of quality beers.
Nice American style food menu.
I had the dirty fries which were pretty good.
Top tip for lunchtime, the fire specials come with a cheap pint, so well worth checking out before you order your drink. The steak sandwich (with skin on fries) was also very good.
Tucked away off the quayside but well worth a visit.
M. D.
Sprawling layout with a great atmosphere. Railway theme, obviously. Massive choice of beer and lager. Really nice food.
T. S. M.
Always, always our favourite place for eats and drinks. Lovely, lovely bar staff and very dog friendly too. We even enjoy the music here. So good in fact that we held my son's 18th birthday in a private seating area. Fabulous 👌
S. S.
Nice pub and plenty of seats / room. Food is good when I've had it before, but I've notice recently they have been slow in the kitchen and it was closed for food the other day when we popped in for a drink. Hope this issue with the kitchens is resolved as it's a canny pub with great vegan options for food.
S. N.
Nice drinks (quite strong as well), the food is not bad but not a 5/5, but overall a nice variety and quite large portions. Some really nice tunes were on when we were there.
M. G.
Good beer selection, with at least 20 different draft/cask beers. Friendly staff with knowledge about what they serve, good atmosphere. The kitchen was closed when we were visiting on a Sunday, so can't tell you anything about the food.
N.
Nice and dog-friendly location. Tasty beer and coffee.
C. W.
First time in Newcastle, me and my wife were looking for somewhere to eat on the quayside and we stumbled across,"Head of Steam", probably not the kind of place we would normally choose, but what the heck we were both starving.
The meal came and it was really rather good, the staff were excellent too, also I had a superb pint of IPA ,the music was Great also,so it turned out to be a really enjoyable evening, well done Head of Steam.
D. M.
Good pub about 20 steps off the quayside. Staff are always friendly and we've never had a problem getting a seat, week day afternoons.
P. L.
Always nice going into this pub. Nice staff and a great selection of beers 👍
S. C.
The head of steam chain are going from strength to strength. Consistently interesting beers and an ever improving vegan menu. The new vegan kebabs are excellent
i. K.
Lovely cosy place in quayside. Nachos are so good. You can try different local drinks from beers to ciders and play pool, pinball...etc and board games. Drinks are quite reasonable. Burgers are delicious but a bit prices. But worth trying. You can use the multi story parkings around the area. They are free after 5pm.
L. M.
We had a pint of Jaipur (growing on me that one), and some great grub, but disappointing to have to ask for cutlery and napkins after the food was delivered.
P. W.
Sat in the window overlooking the Millennium Walkway and had a couple of pints of Tiny Rebel Pelaton. Good location and plenty of interesting beers to choose from.
a. o.
Amazed at the amount of vegan options available. Good tasty food at reasonable prices. Would definitely go back and recommend to others
B. W.
Theakston's Barista, what a gem! A coffee-flavoured stout that hits the spot on a cold, wet winter quayside.
Well worth a visit with staff who have time for customers.
Thanks for a great evening, guys!
Thanks for invite to return, guys!
Came (again), Brian
D. G.
Had a drink and watched the rugby. Was a good vibe. Good looked decent too although didn't eat.
G. K.
So to start on a positive note first, the food selection, quality and value was pretty good.
What let this visit down was the clear lack of coping by the staff at a time when the place just wasn't that busy.
No-one greeted customers when they arrived, so it wasn't clear how to confirm you had a reservation and were looking for your table.
Finally found a member of staff, who was very pleasant and helpful and we were in.
Trying to order our food and first drinks took about 15 minutes. Had to chase several times for our drinks, which finally arrived with our food. Great selection of beers and good food.
No-one came back to ask us if our food was okay or if we wanted to order more drinks.
After the meal, we decided to pay and leave. Spent about 10 to 15 minutes trying to find someone to take our money. One of the bar staff actually said he was too busy to take the payment and seemed stressed out... God help him when Newcastle revelers hit the bar again in numbers.
Probably won't be back.
p. b.
Nice modern establishment and trendy looking to suit.
Its a big place so plenty room to drink.
Food is offered as well so no need to leave for dinner if your enjoying yourself.
S. B.
Reduced Menu on the night we went . But sufficient choice for us to stay for a meal.
C. A.
We stopped in last Saturday night. Drinks were good, the music they had on was excellent and played at a decent volume but not so loud we couldn't talk (unlike lots of others pubs and bars we visited in Newcastle which blast it so loud your ears hurt). Surprisingly few people there for a Saturday night (I'm not complaining) and a good vibe.
That said, they really need to do something about their toilets (the ladies' at least). They're not especially dirty or anything but most of the cubicles don't flipping lock!
r. w.
Lovely pub with fabulous decor. The staff are great and so is the choice of food and drink. The pool table is really good and you can pay by card so no mucking around with cash and the shuffleboard is brilliant fun. Definitely recommend a visit here 🙂
The only thing that really needs improvement is that most of the locks on the ladies toilet doors didn't work but hopefully this will get sorted soon.
J. R.
Smashed down several premium ciders to hopefully fix an already heavily shattered skull from a hard session the night before. It was early lunch time/late brekky on a Saturday and the place was pretty busy. I don't hit the quayside much at all really, but the vibrations here that day were very decent. Some easy on the eye femme grafters grafted that shift too, which was something of a small bonus for my sorry self inflicted state that day. Head down and see what you think.
S. P.
Nice selection of rums and game and food staff were nice too
R. J.
Nice pint, plenty of seating, looking forward to going back.
G. “. B.
Very good burgers and beers, perfect place to spend some time with friends
G. R.
Didn't know it existed until we found it. It has atmosphere and ambience in equal measure, and the Head of Steam Kebabs were really beautiful, no fat, but full of that kebab flavour, with lamb, beef and chicken. The dessert menu is small but it was very tasty.
K. Z.
Stayed in Newcastle for few days, couldn't help myself to go there everyday to have burger and IPA. Amazing food, good selection of boose.
M. S.
I visit this pub on a regular basis they serve good food and beers . They are also dog Frei dley. I returned to the head of steam pub when all the restrictions were lifted. I had a good night out with my husband and stepson. We were celebrating my stepson 's 21st birthday 🎂 . The bar staff were friendly and made us feel welcome we had an excellent night out .
A. C.
Great bar and good selection of beers. Decent food too
K. J.
Great simple food, magnificent selection of beers and attentive & respectful staff. Medium thrills but impeccable delivery! I would come back in a heart beat!!
A. T.
Decent beer, good venue. Allows dogs
M. C.
Always a pleasure to visit this friendly pub, dog friendly, shuffle board and a great alternative close to the Tyne. Really worth a visit.
P. G.
Excellent bar, great range of beers, tried a few, all very nice! Excellent food too (we had a couple of the small plates each). Great service. Great live music too.
A. H.
Nice atmosphere and comfy chairs. Hard to find in a town full of places with benches and wooden stools 😁
H. W.
It had a gods atmosphere, but better than that they served Thaekstons Barista! Yummy
a. l.
Great selection of beers, really nice interior and lovely burgers
Y. U.
Good drink and food, friendly staff. You can go in without second thought
M. D.
Good selection of cocktails in a nice relaxed atmosphere. Didn't stay for food but the menu looked nice and varied, including a tapas option.
L. E.
Good food, great beer, knowledgeable staff. Able to accommodate a big group.
J. B.
Quite loud inside but spacious and comfortable for a good afternoon drink
D. C.
Food fine, central location. But yet another food place using what seems to be a generic table ordering app that is flawed. Was on a limited time frame, wasted 20 minutes trying to place an order, one item was out of stock/not available, but just couldn't be removed. Ended up aborting food order, going to appointment and returning. This time ordering at till. Food was fine, service spot on. Just spoiled by a 'minimum viable product' app that is flawed.
P. J.
Great selection of beers and friendly staff
T. F.
Good selection of craft beer in a well designed contemporary bar. Knowledgeable staff with a genuine interest in both beer and gin.
M. R.
Great, busy, Quayside venue with big selection of UK and European beers, food and pool table. Bustling evening pub opposite the courts. Good food, good atmosphere and good tunes. Would recommend.
S. (.
tasty food, good beer and classy bar staff.Atmosphere really bright.
f. i. s.
Been here every time we are in Newcastle, Superb pub, staff are really friendly and knowledgable, know their products and you can sample before you buy, excellent decor and friendly atmosphere, highly recommended.
R. R.
Food is OK nothing special. Good atmosphere and deals.
S. C.
Always lively with good atmosphere. Great selection of real ales and craft beers plus belgian beers. Dog friendly too.
A. L.
One of the best pub experiences I've had in a long time.
Every aspect of the pub is deserving of 5 stars.
The selection of beers and ales is impressive, the menu has a good selection and the food is awesome. It's the first time since I can't remember when that I've had a burger that I've wanted to savour rather than just eat.
The staff were friendly and attentive, even though there were issues in the kitchen which limited the menu the speed of service was truly impressive.
The facilities were clean and not run down in the least.
The pricing was fair and I can truly recommend the head of steam to anyone.
I just wish that there was one down south as my family and I were visiting Newcastle seeing family and friends.
K. C.
A good variety of drinks on tap and bottles. Very busy but managed to get a table at the second time of trying. Was worth the wait for the beer.
S. C.
Awesome bar, live music through the week, guest ales, brilliant decor and the wasabi nuts blow your head off, and of course dog friendly 👌👌
S. H.
One of the the only places open near the waterfront that wasn't crazy expensive or require a booking, so we were glad to find it.
Unfortunately, the food was a little disappointing. Almost trying to hard to be different or edgy, but just ending up with some strange flat flavour combinations. This could also have just been our fault for picking the wrong things though.
Also, the way they have the lineup to the bar is that it passes through a tight space where people were sitting. Usually no big deal and nothing to complain about, but during the pandemic it seemed silly to have signs everywhere encouraging social distancing, then force patrons that close to each other. Easy fix would be to remove those tables.
T. T.
Beer is good enough, food is well below par
M. B.
Not too busy .Way too expensive !!
Only 1 drink and left .!
P. C.
Nice place, decent drinks and somewhere to sit. Quick serve
C. 0.
Really lovely bar, great range of food and drinks. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly
D. U.
Great pub Great beer top staff
I.
My wife had been pestering me for ages to try this place.
The pub is really nicely presented and very clean. It follows the modern trend of having random styles of chairs at each table.
I was disappointed by the menu. The selection was very limited and I struggled to find anything that caught my eye.
The food I ordered as nice, but again nothing to write home about.
I'm not sure I'd visit again for food, but would happily go there for drinks.
D. D.
Leaving this review for the Head of Steam is something I'm doing with mixed feelings. It's been a couple months since I last went, however, I left it this long because I didn't have a very positive experience with it.
The food I personally had was not a very good choice I feel, it was a butternut squash and chilli soup. Something I felt would either be really nice or not at all; unfortunately it was the latter. However, while my choice was not very nice it was only the special of the day. The food my friends chose was a lot nicer when I tried it, the fish and chips was especially nice.
Now the drinks at the Head of Steam were quite nice, there were quite a few different beers and ales along with a good selection of wines and spirits, however, I feel like the prices seem quite high in relation to the rest of Newcastle. Would I recommend going there? Not necessarily. However, I do plan on going back to see if I'll have a better experience then.
A. S.
Great selection of beer it has a nice atmosphere. Often gets packed on a summer's day but that just emphasizes how good it is. Staff always friendly and can even provide good beer recommendations. Ideally located in the centres of the quayside so is easily accessible.
T. R.
Nice little elegant place by the Quayside, bit expensive on the drinks end of things. Personally I cannot speak for the food because I didn't eat.
P. R.
Always a brilliant selection of well kept, well served beers. The food is decent.
m. s.
Excellent bar. Lots of choice, good looks immense. Great staff. Feels different to other bars in newcastle.
F. S.
A large venue full of character, with eclectic decor and interesting layout. Wide selection of craft beers and other drinks. Excellent menu, My wife sampled mussels for dinner one evening and eggs royale for brunch another, both were excellent value for money and enjoyable. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Special mention to Beth who served us during our visits, who accommodated my wife's special needs regarding seating position and was highly attentive during our visit. Excellent customer service.
T. R.
Nice little elegant place by the Quayside, bit expensive on the drinks end of things. Personally I cannot speak for the food because I didn't eat.
A. L.
Bar staff were great .. good atmosphere 👍🏽
D. F.
Good rotating beer selection, food is a bit of an afterthought though. Go to drink but not to eat
M. M.
Lovely pub the chicken wings were spot on.
D. H.
Great bar. Loads of top beers to choose from. Staff are great
P. R.
Nice bar food was good and quick service staff excellent !
C. S.
HoS once again proving that their pubs consistently provide an excellent beer selection and a cracking choice of food to smash in as you go.
S. W.
Good selection of beer. Friendly staff and not too lairy.
J. S.
Nice location, a a fair selection of beers, it was quiet when I went but the staff was nice and friendly. I'll go back
L.
Lovely atmosphere.
We ordered the burger and chips and couldnt fault it
D. F.
Good rotating beer selection, food is a bit of an afterthought though. Go to drink but not to eat
M. H.
Vegan doner kebab 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
N. B.
Have frequented your bar in Liverpool, this one didn't disappoint. Very comfortable and friendly.
J.
Food was really lovely, got a good steer on what to drink and a great environment. However, a new chef combined with a new menu meant we had to wait quite a while.for.our lunch, it it was worth the wait! Once things settle down I reckon this place will be a winner!!
I. G.
Good place to drink and eat, however when there is a group of 12 of us wanting to order food there are signs from the staff of stress & panic, we couldn't order food individually we had to order as one as the kitchen staff (in the words of the barman) 'would go ape' some of us ordered and some of our group went to order a few minutes later to be told that they were not taking food orders now and that was 8.30pm....the website states food service till 9pm, so they went elsewhere to eat then the rest of us went elsewhere after we'd finished...shame that.....as we would have stopped longer and bought more drinks....by the way, the food was good and great choice of beers.
S. L.
Great pub - friendly staff, good selection of drinks (especially beers including some local ones), and it's well organised in the current situation.
The pizzas were also decent.
j. k.
Great place for food and alcohol with beers to choose from, watch out for the £8/pint Belgian beer they have on tap - don't worry, the staff will always remind you of the price before they pour one. Meals are competitively priced compared to other bar meals in the area.
L. L.
Ideal location, just off the quayside. Visited for the first time around 2pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Loads of space inside to get a comfortable seat. Good choice of brunch/lunch/all day menus to suit all budgets. Excellent range of beers. Friendly staff.
G. D.
Had a pizza, good size and tasty. Tables and cutlery basic. We ate outside as the sun was beating down.
S. H.
Really friendly pub just by the Quayside with a great range of beers and lagers. Well organised with Covid-19 stuff and the food is good. They also offer a take-out and delivery service for a selection of drinks and food.
R. B.
Great food, great beers. Muchly enjoyed my visit.
M. G.
A large pub just off the quay side. Called here for afew beers one evening. Great range of beers. Ample seating available. Bar games available to play.
Friendly and welcoming staff.
A. H.
Called into Head of Steam as walking on the Quayside and fancied a drink to cool off. The pub looked inviting and there were enough patrons to see that it was relatively busy. Barman apologised for my wait and was chatty. Thus was our first visit and looking at the menu we will return. Ladies toilets were clean and fresh.
E. S.
Booked a table with a large group from wotk to watch the World Cup. Communication with staff beforehand was excellent - they were friendly, helpful and dilignent to ensure everyone's food order was received. Very helpful waiter throughout the evening and bar staff warm and welcoming. Would recommend!
k. b.
Lovely place, good value, child friendly as well
,Good service,lunchtime deals,
L. C.
Felt like at home, staff very friendly, only one think there is, which is that I did not had my discount as I'm entitled to get 10% OFF.
D. H.
Great bar. Loads of top beers to choose from. Staff are great
J. T.
A real ale bar 1 of very few on the quayside in Newcastle. It also is not too expensive, so many of the places on the quay are just ludicrously, ridiculously expensive without having that many real ales.
Also the staff are nice and friendly you always feel they want to help you find something you like.
Plus some of the quayside bars are way too noisy for me, I like a quieter bar.
B. W.
Lost one star as the pub has no ramp to allow wheelchair access to the restaurant area. If you are a wheelchair user and want to sit in the restaurant you have to exit the pub via front entrance and then enter the pub further up the road. It means during meals wheelchair users have to exit the pub and re-enter the pub down the road in order to e.g. access the toilet. There is a step in the pub to the restaurant area that can have a permanent or portable ramp fitted to it - a very inexpensive solution that would mean wheelchair users could access to all parts of the pub.
Overall a generally wheelchair accessible pub with great selection of beers. Wheelchair accessible toilet is a decent size too.
M. S.
Nice pub at the Quayside. Went in for a drink, good service, friendly staff. Breakfast is served until 2pm so went back next day for a delicious breakfast at noon. We'll worth the £6.00
M. W.
Much bigger venue to its sister with friendly helpful staff and a great menu served until 8 on a Saturday. I had moule frites a generous portion served promptly piping hot. Dog and child friendly I think.
K. S.
Been here a number of times now, and can't fault it. Food is lovely, staff are friendly and they are also very dog friendly. Also excellent choice of beers and cider. Probably my favourite pub in town.
J. B.
Fantastic querky pub, used to be the eye on the Tyne. Great selection of beers/craft beers and very friendly staff. huge selection of spirits from all over the globe. Will definitely pop in again when in Newcastle.
J. K.
Good pub and food decent
L. W.
Good range of cask & craft beers, but a little on the pricey side. Not tasted the food, but looks well presented with decent sized portions, but compared to a Wetherspoons a little on the pricey side.
S. W.
Good selection of beer. Friendly staff and not too lairy.
C. S.
HoS once again proving that their pubs consistently provide an excellent beer selection and a cracking choice of food to smash in as you go.
D. R.
Amazing beer selection and devine food
K. O.
Cosy pub just off the quay side with a good variety of drinks and music. The glass sizes vary each time you get a drink and noise does travel through the bar. Yet all in all the staff are friendly, the drinks are good
D. M.
Very new. Decor is similar to previous place, although improved and more contemporary. A bit pricey compared to the rest of Newcastle, up to £6.50 a pint (average £4-5) but generous portions of well cooked pub grub.
J. G.
Really nice atmosphere, good food, great selection of beer and superb service.
Edit:
They just introduced a new menu and it is fantastic! Excellent food, highly recommend trying the wings.
A. T.
The head of steam quayside is in a prime location, but every previous bar on the site fell short of its potential. Thankfully this has now changed with the arrival of head of steam..it has everything you come to expect from a HoS pub, good beer, good mix of people and a good atmosphere.. good starting point for a night out
B. S.
They will take your drink away if you go more than six feet away from it and aren't paying enough attention, for example if you go for a smoke. It's also quite expensive simply because it's on the Quayside. But it's nice enough and the food is decent.
S. B.
Cosy warm little pub with loads of good beers in. Friendly staff too. Had food once a while back and it was lush. Go there now
D. J.
A gem down on the Quayside. Great staff and a good selection of cask beer. It's a relaxed atmosphere down here I'd say. The menu looks interesting and its something that we will be checking out soon.
P. R.
Nice bar food was good and quick service staff excellent !
J. E.
Spacious cozy pub with a lot of great beers. The vegan burgers were really good. Unbelievable friendly staff. Dog friendly.
B. G.
Great little bar, and it serves very nice, reasonably priced food. Maybe avoid the desserts though, as I had a cheese cake that was clearly some cheap pre-ordered thing that only vaguely resembled a cheesecake (everything else was lovely though).
I. C.
Delightful bar with a huge selection of beer, gin and other spirits. We regularly visit and take friends and family. Would reccomend to anyone spending a few days in Newcastle
D. S.
Head of the steam fan... Nice venue
K. W.
This place is very warm and welcoming with great food!
K. E.
Great location good food. Learn about your beers or get the real thing. Told me some gumph about the beer being just like John Smiths. Nothing like it.
S. L.
Spent yesterday afternoon in the Head of Steam before moving on to Tyne Theatre to see 3 Moons, we were really comfortable in the pub so decided to give the food a try instead of moving as it was hammering down outside, my wife went for a Slider with thick cut home made chips which was really generous portion and I went for the chicken burger, Alright Chuck if memory serves with skinny home made chips and both meals were fantastic well worth the money with tons of flavour, chicken was cooked perfect and non of your McCain nonsense chips these were the real I am, cheers Head of Steam for top Scoff
K. M.
Good service. Friendly staff. Good menu and a list of beers it would take a lifetime to go through!! Highly recommend.
G. H.
. Large and roomy, with the cosy feel of a small room.
The service is quick and friendly.
Prices are very reasonable.
Also good food and bar snacks. Friendly atmosphere
A. W.
Absolutely love this head of steam! Staff are all lovely but charli makes the place! Food is good too! Pickle mayo is to die for!
I. T.
Good to see a group take on this pub and make it work, big venue with separate dining and drinking areas. Huge options on beers and wine, ideal place for a relaxed drink after a walk along the quayside
T. G.
Great pub, good location, friendly staff. Menu has recently changed, it's still good but we're missing some of the "old" sandwiches
M. N.
Cool venue, took a while for food to come but was excellent when it did.
J. B.
Decent place at the Quayside for drinks and there was good music playing when we popped in for a drink.
B. C.
Nice place to grab breakfast. Cosy and clean, polite staff. Not the most amazing place you'll ever visit but definitely nice enough as a stop by and the food was good.
G. W.
Really good place, we called in after eating Indian up the road and it was fantastic. Great selection of beers and whiskies. I'll be back here before long!
s. H.
Great atmosphere, super choice of drinks with nachos to die for!
G. A.
Very friendly and interesting old pub. Food and service good
M. J.
They were short staffed but we're putting in so much effort great afternoon. The small plates with little glasses of ale to sample are great.
C. B.
Bit pricey for non booze options, nearly 6 quid for a coke and soda with lime
A. C.
Sound staff good choice of drinks atmosphere ok
C. J.
Brilliant pub in Newcastle, good beer selection (And ales too!) Food menu is decent mega vegan friendly. Live music too!
K. H.
Great location for a weatherspoons. Loads of seating round the back and on the quayside itself. Seats get taken up quickly though so you might not actually get one.
T.
Good food and range if beers and ales
C. E.
Great bar would drop in here again when passing excellent service great atmosphere good views of the Tyne millennium bridge as the sun was going down, loads of beers to choose from its that's your thing.felt so at ease in there as if I'd been coming here for years.

Nice pub, good atmosphere and decor. A little expensive but to be expected on the quayside. Good place to meet early in the night and the food was really tasty.

Good choice of beer and really welcoming atmosphere. Although I didn't eat, the menu looks good.
J. R. T.

Great place fantastic food great selection of drinks and great music
l. e.
Great place, good selection of drinks. Outside area a little small and can get quite crowded on the rare sunny newcastle day!!
C. W.
Good size, friendly staff, nice selection of beers, reasonably priced. Also quite interesting train station décor and very clean.
D. M.
Very good selection of beers very nice staff eventhough they had literally just opened nice and cosy in the left side bar was getting very busy as we left
F. T.
Great covid response from staff, lovely chilled atmosphere, Head of Steam knows how to keep you as safe as possible during covid. Please visit Fay ♥️
V. S.
Very friendly pub nice atmosphere good selection of ales I love coffee and that was one of the best I have had in a long time I love tiny milk bottle
A. W.
The choice of drinks is huge, the staff are brilliant. The atmosphere is family friendly and the pub is dog friendly to top it of.
K. M.
Loved the atmosphere of this pub, went back a few times during our stay in Newcastle. Good food, friendly people, a winner.
S. A. S.
Good selection of beers both Real ales and the customary lagers and ciders. Large pub so you can usually get a seat
C. H.
