Reviews of The Hotspur
J. J.
Came in for some food, got a beef Brisket burger! Gotta say, that was the best burger I've ever had.... and I've had a fair few burgers let me tell you.
Will be back for more!
Thanks!
P. H.
Real ale, bands and great pizza. Friendly staff and good atmosphere. Covered outside area. Very handy for transport. Unfortunately they allow people to book tables so sometimes there's nowhere to sit, but otherwise brilliant.
S. O.
If you're looking for somewhere that serves a proper pint, look no further. Nicest pint of lager I've been served in a long time. Nice, friendly atmosphere to go with it.

It’s just the best proper pub. The menu doesn’t advertise how good the food is which is bizarre. Pizza and the beef sandwiches are simply quality.
Can’t help but not love this place
P. J.
During the heady summer of 1989 a spent a pleasant afternoon in the Hotspur with a Hungarian gentleman, (Lazio), and his Spanish paramour (who surprisingly rejoiced in the name of Doris Salamanca). It was a wonderful hostelry, and we whiled away the hours drinking Margarita’s and a local beverage known as the The Newcastle Old Brown. I inadvertently left my coat there.
A corollary to this story is that three decades later I revisited the Hotspur during in a period of deep self-reflection in which I was, uncharacteristically, filled with doubt as to the goodness of the human spirit. Although the passage of the years has not been kind to me it seemed to me that landlord of the hostelry’s face lit up with a spark of recognition the moment I passed the threshold. His welcome was exuberant, as he expressed his delight to see me again. He had aged barely a day.
To my immense surprise he quickly produced my long lost coat, a Burberry of no little renown amongst my peers of the day. He also informed me that, in order to preserve the value of the small amount of cash in the inner pocket of the coat (the princely sum of two pounds and 36 pence), he had invested the money in the hope of being able to provide suitable recompense in the event of my return. Initially he dealt timidly in “penny stocks”, but as his confidence and experience grew he became bolder - never taking undue risks of course - but building upon his growing understanding of the ebb and flow of international finance. Most recently the money that he had held for me had been invested in an electric automotive company named Tesla, and upon dissolving these assets I was left with a sum of something slightly in the excess of £17,000. Astonishing.
The bar area seemed little changed, although the prices (although still very competitive) had risen slightly since 1989. Nevertheless, a grand little pub.

Popped in for some food during uni, decided to get a world famous cheese and ham toastie,
Has to be the best toastie I’ve ever had and lived up to the name!
Will definitely be popping back in to try a burger or a pizza very soon.
J. C.
Great little pub in the centre of Newcastle, the Guinness is always poured perfectly and the Chirizo and Cheese toastie is amazing, good friendly service too.
D. H.
Great pub for a catch-up with mates and a nice pint. Only downside is when busy you have to shout to be heard.
j. b.
Had a drink here while wandering trying to see as many things of the Great North exhibition. Lovely looking pub with great stain glass windows and a good selection of beers. It was the Pride march day and got talking to a lovely bloke called Bob who had lost his friend as he had slept in and then went to wrong pub! Hope he found some friends later😄
P. T.
A fairly traditionally styled British pub. Coping well considering the current Covid situation. Friendly and attentive staff and generally a good chilled atmosphere. Definitely worth a look.
B. S.
Great pub to chill in and have a chat
S. B.
Always been a fan of the Hotspur, excellent attentive staff and a really decent pint.
The Staropramen was excellent and made even better as this is one of the few bars that have it on draught.
D. J.
8 cask ales & great place to drink to drink them. Harvistoun Bitter & Twisted
f.
great little place the blonde lad that works there was fantastic
P. D.
Good bar and a good range of beer but not cheap. Enjoyed my glass of merlot. Only one member of staff. She was very good but the bar was very quiet probably because Newcastle were playing a televised match against Villa.
S. W.
I've never heard such rubbish as the last review, I ordered a drink and the barman recommended two others they had as he thought they were better examples of the type of ale I was looking for. Needless to say, the ale I tried was excellent. The original choice was a local and I ended up with another ale from Cornwall
F. M.
Good selection of beer and quick service. Well used City pub in the old style. Toilets well worn but clean. Covered outside area for smokers.
C. B.
Have known the Hotspur for years and have always enjoyed the atmosphere. Good place to meet, town centre, close to the bus station and good for people watching!
One down side on this occasion almost all of the cask ales were unavailable. Shame really.
r. b.
Cracking bar, good crowd and brilliant bar staff. I like the different choice of ales the bar provides. Nice city centre location. The manager with blonde hair seems to cater for everyone one and goes the extra mile.
M. N.
Friendly helpful staff customer service spot on hand sanitizer on entry NHS qbar available toilets very hygienic with hand wipes for the doors and hand sanitizer for you to used one in one out and a lovely selection of beers ales and lager and also lovely food quite cheap well worth a visit
C. C.
Great city pub. Friendly staff and lovely ales.
C. D. (. S. H.
Great bar - I've been coming here since late 1970's when Little Kenny was the manager! Top notch range pf ales and friendly knowledgeable staff - food is okay too!
P. L.
Couple of Misogynistic, pervy old men who seem to be always in there, harrassing young girls and making rude derogatory comments. It’s awful. Manager is aware and should bar them but doesn’t seem to care.
These two clowns also get discounts on drinks that other ‘regulars’ don’t get. So totally unfair and inconsistent with discounts too!
P. A.
Great bar ...nice and friendly..great pizza 🍕they sell ..
I. Y.
A good pub, friendly and a very good range of beer's, not the cheapest bar around in fact a bit pricey in all honesty which is why only 3* from me but we still always call in & the beer's the best pint in the area so I suppose you get what you pay for
T. C.
Good beer and nice atmosphere. Might have been nice if they'd let us know that last orders was at the odd time of 10.40 on a Tuesday night
P. R.
Great place, staff brill, beer brill, atmos brill. Seems to be a few disgruntled employees getting their friends to post bad reviews, take no notice. Great pub come and try it and see for yourself
m. k.
Good local pub in the city centre. Popular with locals, students
D. F.
Proper pub, great selection of ales. Very welcoming, friendly staff and punters. Football on live. Great background music. Decor original features.👍
s. r.
Been coming here since the 80s. Used to have a horseshoe shaped bar with hippies smoking weed at the back. (And a cracking dukebox). Still a nice place but wish I could go back in time.
R. B.
Lovely pub, very quiet even on match days. Sodas were off when we went but staff were quick to get some from elsewhere.
A. H.
A great bar, just opposite the bus station so a great place to start your evening, they do home food but as yet we have not sampled this
P. S.
A nice city center pub. Geared towards the ale drinker. Not very big, but friendly and good atmosphere.
T. M.
A great traditional pub a very friendly atmosphere a good range of beers and some different spirits
C. B.
Sometimes a great bar, with a good selection of beers. Sometimes not so much. The toilets let it down and need serious attention!
N. G.
Good pub with nice beer selection. Def good choice when your up by Haymarket. Not loads of room but nice place for a beer
A. T.
Great pub next to the Haymarket and close to the university, a stalwart of my pub crawls in the early 2000. Good beer, cosy, comfy great for watching the world go by and has benefited from a relatively recent refurb
P. T.
Cosy and small with beers. As long as it will be quiet with a quiet level of music it will be my place. A good cleaning would help though 😊
T. C.
Love coming back to the Hotspur for a pre-match pint or two since leaving the north east. Good beer and the punters are friendly.
B. B.
Nice very relaxed atmosphere pleasant servers it's 5 star's from me Hotspur Hotel also has 5 star meal's, get yourself too it and bus and metro station's so close less than 5 minutes enjoy!!
M. S.
One of the few remaining pubs in Newcastle unspoilt by whatever the latest fad is. Ignore the low ratings posted by idiots, they probably should have gone to wetherspoons.
M. D.
