Reviews of The Punch Bowl
A. g.
Lovely friendly staff who love dogs which is always a bonus, food menu had so much choice and was so tasty will be going back
R. P.
I love it here. Such a great choice of local & specialist beers, organic and unfiltered wines and vermouth. The staff are lovely very knowledgeable about the drinks and it's such a great atmosphere. Dogs welcome too.
M. H.
Excellent food options, vegan and meat. Very tasty and atmosphere lovely. Surprisingly good wines for a pub too!
M. J.
Interesting range of craft beers, friendly staff and decent food. Hipster, student, LGBTQ+ friendly sort of place but a middle aged couple passing through midweek felt very welcome.
E. P.
They were so nice to our dog, and he loved the treats.
Beer seemed to be enjoyed by the husband, and it wasn't horrendously busy either on a Saturday.
I. B.
Great beer selection, fantastic Sunday dinner, nice decor and very friendly staff. Will definitely be visiting again
v. r.
It's a great pub, two rooms on the ground floor and a cosy gig room upstairs.
Good beer and food, try it!
R. T.
Great pub and craft beer. They have live bands and it's a great cozy venue
I. &. S.
Nice pub! Staff has been very helpful and friendly; explained all different Beers they Served in details for us as tourist/ business Trip
Food was delicious for reasonable price
K.
Fun.
The pub is really fun, Everything they do is fun, I’m happy it’s by my house. They have a great drink selection. Fun pub snacks and super impressive food choices.
The staff weren’t knowledgeable about what was for sale at the front of the restaurant when I was in the back. Kinda strange because they are connected!
I ate there a few times. The food is good, the size is part of the brand image they want to portray. I get it. However, I found it messy. Ordered the chicken dinner one time, by far the best thing I ordered there.
Give it a try if you are looking for something different.
G. V.
Decent food and a nice pint. Good atmosphere and friendly staff
D. C.
Great place to visit for Sunday lunch. Food was great, serving size was excellent. Service was friendly, and the pub is also very dog friendly.
M. R.
Mardy bar man directed my wife to the wine list, when asking about the wine. Bearing in mind you don't have the usual run of the mill, stuff and the wine list only has a picture of the bottle and the name...
I remember when your staff would ask what you like and offer a recommendation.
Maybe with no tables in and nothing to do, he hadn't liked being interrupted from reading his paper
N. S.
Great pub. I had a lovely cold pint of Heineken, and shared some nachos with my daughter. Very nice. It's dog friendly and they have some dog beds and blankets to use. They even have a dog menu. Very friendly place and I can't wait to go back.
L. R.
Very good choice of beers and food!
S. J.
First time at this venue. Really nice atmosphere. Food looked gorgeous and the staff are friendly and helpful
A. M.
Didn't see much of the pub itself, but the building has great character, and the venue upstairs has charm and looks brilliant.
R. R.
Ya know what ...lush little pub hidden away in the hole of jesmond
Clean and a canny atmosphere , seen a few bands play here
T. S.
Great venue. Watched The Yorkshire Geordies perform was mental. Staff are friendly and great bar service.
L. f.
It has been 30 years since I last had a drink in The Punch Bowl and it is still a wondeful bar with great choice and excellent staff.
D.
Called in for a pint after we had been for food on osborne Road.
Nice pint in a relaxed atmosphere.
A. B.
Great food and selection of drinks, like the music. Sunday lunch is tops
W. S.
Really nice atmosphere, dog friendly and great food and beer
S. R.
Nice, relaxing atmosphere, dog friendly. Could improve on food offering and wine always seems to be sold out!
J. J.
Some of the best pub food I've ever had!
S. N.
Really good food and it’s dog friendly!
a. s.
Lovely pub and great with dogs..my dogs loved the dogs menu and we loved the food
V. V.
Great place for natural wine!

Disappointing. The bar itself was excellent, with a warm cosy atmosphere and excellent choice of music. Beer and food were spot on. Service quick and friendly.
Our issue was a number of tables were clearly from mixed households, and unlike other pubs we frequent, staff weren't challenging this. I don't support the rules myself, but I follow the law and am missing out on time with my own family. It's a shame a minority are spoiling it for the rest of us.
G. W.
First time here, superb place. Friendly welcome for me and my 15 and 17 year old kids. Covid precautions top notch. Great choice of cask ale, the ones I tried were in great condition. Food was excellent two interesting chicken dishes and a burger between us, good sized portions and well made. Can really recommend, we'll be back!
c. M.
Nice atmosphere, food very tasty but no oat or soya milk for my coffees. Next time please.
L. C.
Excellent pub with really good Covid arrangements: no bar service, just grab a table, order via the easy-to-use app and drinks/food delivered quickly. Using the app means you're automatically checked-in as well. Fantastic range of beers, wines & spirits. Big car park has been adapted with lots of tables, each one sits up to 6.
M.
What a brilliant venue. The pub downstairs has a great atmosphere, good beers and the food looked amazing.
We were there for the music upstairs and again what a great space and atmosphere.
The only reasons I gave 4 stars is because I haven't tried the food......yet (I will), and because it's not closer to home! If I lived more locally I would definitely see the punchbowl as becoming a regular hangout.
H. f. w.
Lovely staff and nice wine. A few more non alcoholic beers woukd be good x
A. N.
Great food (meat and vegetarian and vegan options), very dog friendly and lovely staff too. Will definitely be back!
B. S.
Cosy pub with good range of drinks and a varied menu
S. B.
Lovely bar, very nice service, plenty of ale choice and the food was very very nice. Would highly recommend!! And some quality graffiti to boot
C. C.
Really nice area at the back of the pub with a lot of fresh air. The tables were placed with distance in order to follow the covid measurements . The food and the beer was delicious. The burger came with chips and they were fulling. The price was 10 pounds because the pub follows the eat out scheme.
N. C.
Amazing staff, food and atmosphere. A real treat to visit.
J. L.
Nice place, good venue, good choice of beers. Met a lad who swilled David Cameron in there, legend.
A. 5.
Lovely visit to the Punch Bowl this afternoon. Great beer and the sunday lunch was epic.
K. L.
Great location, good selection of food and drinks, and a venue upstairs for live bands
K. F.
Superb selection of beers and wonderful service. I'll admit the location is very convenient for me so I can't rate under 5. Nice selection of books too!
M. F.
What a lovely lovely place. Food was unreal and staff and management omg what a friendly environment! And they sell a wide range of interesting vermouths! This is just...amazing! Great addition to the Newcastle drinking scene well done guys all the best see you soon!
S. R.
Great atmosphere and amazing wines
S. S. R.
Great venue although chicken was over fried during busy period. Seating could be better organised
A. K.
Went for Sunday lunch, a bit of a wait for the food but didn't mind as the music was good and a excellent selection of beers to wet the appetite. Roast beef was delicious with a killer gravy, all washed down with a nice Cloudwater beer. Great service with a good banter. Will definitely be back to sample the rest of the menu.
C. M.
A nicely done update after a decades long dormancy. Two big rooms, one more open, the other with smaller areas inside, great for a sense of being in a more intimate space. Good beer. What's not to like. Not really near a metro, so not one I'm likely to frequent very often.
S. C.
Excellent, especially the cool music!
J. G.
This is now an excellent pub with a ton of quirky bits and pieces scattered around the place. Great beer, exciting innovations in wine tasting and a cracking menu. It's something a little different from the people who have put The Brandling Villa on the map!
J. R.
Post refurbishment this venue looks great. I went a few times many years back and whilst it was a drinkers bar, things maybe weren't optimal on the old wedge front.
After a major cash injection from an already well established local Gent, the place is reignited! As ever I'm not a fan of dogs or kids in bars, and this place tolerates both. The upstairs Bobiks room has major potential. It's small in capacity but with its own bar. Gigs aplenty there it would seem right now, and new music runs rich. However, I'm not saying cover bands rule but I'm keen to see if this new music promotion actually draws butts on seats. Fully personally I think the bulk of the live turns are highly questionable, but I might be proved wrong in time. The grub menu reads well though untried. The bar side grafters are top though service on writing this was terrible (skeleton crew) and the food had ran out asap. It is early days so five stars cometh overall if we go the distance here.
G. M.
Great beer range, music via vinyl and turntable, sunshine beaming through large windows onto restored wooden floors, food along the lines of the Brandling as you'd expect. Just a great place to sit and sip a few pints
S. A.
Good atmosphere and selection of beers
D. B.
Decent pub, decent beer but I don't think they've got the hang of the table service. Took ages to get a drink each time.
G. A.
Friendly, great service, food and drink.
A. H.
Excellent expansion of the Frank & Bird empire, great range of beers and wines and also, unusually, vermouth. Food was great and worth a visit for the menus alone. Nice to see a landmark revitalised and not turned into student digs!
J. B.
Frank and Bird have done another great pub at the Punch Bowl. We always thought that such a magnificent building was being wasted by the previous owners but not anymore. Well done to them for restoring / creating a wonderful pub and for keeping development in Newcastle tasteful and fun.
P. W.
A proper pub with good beer and other things. Still a good pub with good beer and other things. See website for the other things, surprising.
L. M.
5 out of 5!! Amazing food, friendly staff and most of all beautiful dogos everywhere!
E. F.
Bar staff and customers all very friendly but the building itself is quite scruffy, especially upstairs. Maybe they're going for shabby chic??
C. D.
Lovely pub however be careful of the buttons you press on the side of the toilet! I pressed the water button and can only describe what felt like a hose pipe shooting up from the toilet which made me jump up and it didn’t switch off! Literally squirted all over me in the toilet 🤣
I. H.
First visit since it reopened. Lovely atmosphere with fire burning ideal for a wet lunchtime.
Only stopped for a drink but keen to sample the food menu. Great selection of teas as well.
L. W.
Food is absolutely class here, especially the burgers. Great relaxed atmosphere.
E. M.
Great new menu, the food was absolutely delicious and there's even options for your dog's!
L. G.
I had the nicest carrot of my life.
A. J.
Went to see Bird in the Belly and Kate Locksley gig at Bobiks which is upstairs - fabulous. Good selection of beers and food though we haven't eaten here yet. Nice ambience.
R. R.
Covid safe. Didn't try the app to order, stayed with the website. Excellent pint of harviestoun bitter and twisted.
Good venue, good staff. Next visit will include food.
T. E.
Friendly service, good selection of cask ales. Lots of dogs too which was nice.
N. W.
Brilliant intimate venue for bands (Bobiks) and great beers available.
C. S.
Good for a drink before a meal .... staff helpful... dogs are welcome ...
n. e.
1st time in and not disappointed! Such a nice down to earth place. Had a little giggle at the menu....dog friendly, nice staff, Frank & bird have hit the mark on this. Well done👍
W. S.
Really nice regeneration of the beautiful Punch Bowl Hotel by the team behind the Brandling in South Gosforth. Bar and lounge knocked through into one room making a much better space. Good food menu with amazing burgers. Good selection of drinks although I will give the cinzano a miss. Yet to try out the upstairs gig venue/cinema/comedy venue. This is the pub that Jesmond has been crying out for and deserves. Far removed from the tacky Osborne Road scene. A damn fine boozer.
P. M.
Great bar. Plenty of ales to pick from. All well kept. Will need to visit again when they have a gig in the events room up stairs.
D. S.
I had higher anticipations of the place. I know it's a real ale bar, but not to do any cocktails for the "ladies" was a bit of a let down. Even the Forth does cocktails...🤫😁
B. F.
Great bar with a good selection of real ales, tasty food and great music
M. W.
Excellent pub except if you're disabled from bar you have to go outside and back in up a step to disabled toilet meanings it isn't a disabled toilet to wheelchair users or people who find it hard to walk
I will say the staff are excellent and it is such a friendly pub for people and dogs loved the dog menu but for me it is anti disability especially wheelchairs and in the 21st century the line its an old building holds no water needs to be open for all
At present the dogs can go places I cannot it is the 21st century after all
C. H.
I couldn’t recommend this place enough!! Great atmosphere to eat and drink, with a plethora of amazing drinks and food options! Defo go here for a cheeky one :)
G. R.

G. B.
Good beer, good music, good atmosphere and, most importantly, unreal olives.
