Reviews of The Split Chimp
A. S.
First time at this micro pub, visited here as they sell flat cider and handy walk from the hotel.
Nice selection of real ales and three ciders.
R. O.
Good selection of beers however on Sundays some kegs were empty and not replaced. Staff friendly and good space to sit and drink. Good music and good volume. Upstairs unavailable on this visit. Will happily return and definitely recommended. My wife has advised that the ladies toilets are spotless 👍
R. L.
This is a wee gem of a place and we'll be back. The choice of craft beers was decent and there's plenty of other options of that's not your thing. We only stayed for one beer but it was some delicious local pale ale and I wanted more! The barman was friendly and chatted to us for a bit, a skill sadly lost in those bigger chain bars.
D. L.
Lots to look at. Instruments (piano and guitars in two sizes) plus games available. Great selection of real ales. Reasonable pricing. Clean toilets. Friendly staff. Upstairs area available for functions. I wish I had longer to stay here. If I had the money I'd have bought a t-shirt to remember it by so I could find it again.

What a great spot. We stumbled on this quanit, little pub after an afternoon of shopping in town. The bar sells a range of local real ales as well as more traditional drinks to suit any taste. The bar man was welcoming, fun and full of positive energy for the bar which made us all feel very welcome and stay a lot longer than we had expected
A really lovely atmosphere and relaxing spot all round that we are sure to visit again.
O. K.
Excellent venue, really nice beers and friendly staff. Group of 16 of us booked out the upstairs, they provided food and let us crack on. All for a very reasonable price.

Best new-style bar in the city if you ask me. Staff couldn't be more friendly, good selection of properly kept beer, and the old school background music is top notch. What more can you ask for?
L. W.
This is a great bar, situated within a railway arch the beer selection here is excellent. No main stream generic brews to be found here, just a fabulous selection of independent brewers. The owners knowledge & experience of beers is impressive which should pretty much gaurentee you won't be disappointed. It has a lovely atmosphere and the locals were delightful. I highly recommended this bar.

Popped in on a Sunday around 5pm before getting my train home. Had a pint of Oak Cream IPA (£5) and a half of their exclusive Cleaver Chimp (£1.80). Two delicious beers, I’ll be back. Homely interior with loads of character. Games, piano, cool music, some what appeared to be regulars. Friendly and efficient staff. Good accessibility, door isn’t automatic and there might be a ridge. Not sure about toilets.
M. N.
Lovely atmosphere good beers and lagers staff really nice this place is a must it was our first time but very impressed 😀
J. C.
Fantastic bar, always great ales, friendly staff, far better than a lot of the poncy bigger pubs nearby, ..........yes I'm talking about you Bar Tokyo!
V. W.
Simply one of the best places in town to while away an hour or two with a decent pint!
A. D.
Good friendly staff and the beer was excellent quality worth a visit
J. J.
Quirky bar. More beers /ales. Nice vibe to the place .
D. M.
Came across this one by accident but have been to another. Unfortunately not a real ale drinker so a short it is. Nice little quirky pub that suits all ages, a place to look out for on your walk about.
S. L.
Nice hole in the wall with good beer, perfect for a quick stop on way to train station!
J. V.
It's like a proper pub with proper beer, what more do you want.
M. L.
Nice little bar, very friendly staff, great beer, quirky furniture.
R. A.
Awesome beer, check website to see when it's open.
J. C. (. a. J.
Good Newcastle pub located in a railway arch. Four cask ales on tap when I visited including a stout. Very quiet before the football at St James Park.
N. F.
Good beers. Watch out for the statue on the roof that might kill you at any time 😂
M. H.
A great choice of Real Ales, Craft Beer and Cider, and Spirits. The beer bats are well recommended 👌
D. G. C.
Small Pub with nice atmosphere, nice music, very good beer and friendly staff. I will come back for sure and I recommend you the same.
P. H.
Good range of mostly local cask. Some keg beers on and always a good selection of cider. Pork pies available.
J.
Great place, great beer. If a member of CAMRA a discount on real ales.
A. S.
Great little bar, with excellent beer
R. C.
Great little pub. Always have good beer (limited selection, obviously). The skittles alley is great fun.
d.
Excellent micropub in Newcastle city centre and a short walk from Central Station.
Great selection of beers in tip top condition with a good choice of real ciders and spirits.
A must visit if you're in the vicinity.
R. W.
Split chimp was fine, slight disagreement about some darts and the kitchen area behind the darts board. Yes, absolutely no leg to stand on re the no entry sign but we'd lost the feather, bit of a mild storm in a tea cup, t'was best to leave.
G. W.
Good little micro pub between the station and the castle. Good choice of beer and wine and quirky interior decor. Worth a visit.
N. P.
Micro pub with a good, different selection of real ales.
r. a.
Friendly bar man, great beer
A. F.
Good atmosphere quirky seating great beer
L. R.
A great micropub with a fine choice of beers, nice toilets and friendly staff. Keep an eye out for the tongue-in-cheek posters on the walls!
A. T.
Great 'micropub' the first in Newcastle which inevitably started a welcome trend of smaller specialist boozers. A short stumble from perennial favourite the Bridge Hotel and new kids on the block box social and Beer street. It does not disappoint, great selection of well kept beer. Decent bar snacks and friendly knowledgeable staff. Well worth a visit.
A. E.
Good selection of drinks and a quiet, relaxed atmosphere even at 6pm on a Saturday.
L. “. R. W.
Nice atmosphere, great beer and the service was top notch! I would recommend here if you like your beers!
N. L.
Relaxed atmosphere and decent selection of both cask and keg. Nice micro.
B. B.
Nice atmosphere. Friendly knowledgeable staff. A good selection of ales/stout and ciders. The piano was in use, people were picking up the guitar and strumming, a game of darts was going on. All added to the convivial vibe gannin' on! Great to have such a place in town.
A. D.
Amazing beers, amazing vibes
R. M.
Good micro pub, deceptive size inside from the street entrance, pleasant atmosphere not forgetting my visit was on a Sunday afternoon. Note: People come in to perform with acoustic guitar and house piano, passing troubadours! ! Open 12 pm till 8pm on Sundays. Slightly off the beaten track as no over the door front sign, but definitely worth a visit.
G. O.
Great selection of craft beers brewed on the premises. No fancy decor but a selection of quirky tables, chairs, even cinema seats. Great music as well, so long as you like punky and alternative styles.
R. C. (. W. W.
Not as good as it was for cider, but still a nice place to have a pint, great prices and staff
L. C.
Changed from 3 to 4 stars (slip of the finger). Nice selection of ales and well kept.
Only didn't get 5 stars due to the mid week selection not as varied as I would have liked, but judging by the pump clips on the wall, this was probably just unfortunate timing on my part.
Will try this place again next time I'm in Newcastle and see if the beers push this up to a 5* review :)
J. M.
Large selection of beers and ales, but more importantly for me a good selection of rum.
Bar staff chatty, friendly, helpful, easy going and don't mind a bit banter.
Dart board in a bit of a daft place, that a side it's all good!
C. W.
Nice place good for one way to train station
b. m.
Great beer, friendly chimp behind the bar (matt) and even crisps with a pickled egg in. Heaven on earth.
M. R.
Cracking micro pub always a good pint, canny atmosphere
J. C.
Great staff love the look and style of the place
A. H.
Great beer selection and other drinks, served by jolly bar staff under the arches - will be back....
R. T.
Creating the right atmosphere in a pub is maybe more important than the beer, the food or the prices. While this is a nice micro-pub, there's just something missing. Can't really put my finger on it.
D.
Great bar. Great atmosphere and lovely real ale. Some very unusual and weird tasty beers! Owner very friendly and chatty. Ten pin going upstairs 1st come 1st served. Give it a try.
G. D.
I have only been to the place twice, but the lad is always knowledgeable about his beers & ciders. Friendly service. Not too expensive, but not cheap either. Definitely worth trying if you like something a bit different.
A. M.
Great beer with a good environment. I went in by myself for a pint and had a lovely time chatting to locals and the bar tender. Will be going back!!
o. b.
Painfully hip brewery tap for a local micro brewery. Looks a bit rough and ready but looks are decieving. Good selection of beers, well presented and friendly knowledgeable staff. In a converted railway arch in the city centre
R. C.
Great pub, nice clientele, good music but not intrusive, some of the best beer in the city and a mind blowing selection of other beverages. A true gem of a pub.
C. D. (. S. H.
One of best micropubs in Newcastle-upon-Tyne!
S. Q. (. Q.
Fantastic choice of quality beer, at very very reasonable prices for a town centre pub. Lacks a bit of atmosphere but that might just be the times I've visited being quiet (Saturday afternoons).
R. B.
Great beers, relaxed atmosphere. Called in when last in Newcastle for a pint. Back again so another visit. Quirky place, engaging bar staff. Perfect pint!
b. l.
Really quirky. Nice welcome. Must be even better with no social distancing. Strawberry cider was a real find
T. L.
Fantastic selection of real ales ciders and spirits. Wonderfully relaxed atmosphere even on a busy weekend. Helpful staff. Built into the railway arches. An absolute gem.
D. A.
Fantastic evening. Great beer and cider on offer. Environment and staff great. Take out beer measures SHITE. no where near 2 pints you pay for. Very disappointed. Sorry.
M. F.
Nice pub with good decor, atmosphere and excellent beers
I. B.
Great micro pub. Larger than most though. Great, ever changing choice of ales.
T. M.
I liked this place, it's a bit unusual but served a well kept pint
M. T.
Smaller place with great craft ales, pork pies and cheese available (among other things). Great atmosphere and a great place for a chilled night out
A. N.
Cool pub. Always a good beer selection and tasty snacks. It's a contemporary pub with a modern feel. Skittles, darts and bar games, but definitely not an 'old man' pub!
V. M.
Super place. Loved the ladies loo seat and splendid beer too
A. D.
Great selection of ales but not the friendliest of atmospheres in this little bar. Felt like I was doing the bar staff a favour when I was ordering my drinks.

Great selection of beers and coders. Very reasonable prices. Lovely place to have a few beer, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Highly recommended.
J. G.
Great beer but unfortunately lost something when they moved to the new premises. I hope they recapture 'that certain something' sooner rather then later. But as I say the beer is as excellent as ever.
D. H.
Cracking simple and no nonsense pub. Great beer.
