Reviews of The Town Wall

We had a small room off the bar for 8 of us for Sunday lunch. The food was lovely, presented well and was hot and tasty, including the vegetarian option. The service was great, very responsive without being over attentive, excellent customer service. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely time at The Town Wall celebrating my friends disabled son being offered a place in the special school they always dreamed of. Jean-Pierre the bar manager was a delight.
Only downside is they need some blinds for the very sunny windows! 🤷♂️

My daughter booked her 30th birthday party at this venue and by all accounts it cost her a packet.
She, along with myself were very disappointed with the fact that she was unaware that children were unable to attend, even though it was a private party and the folk that were celebrating were close friends and family.
The landlady was most indignant with removing my daughters 2 friends who made a real effort to bring their babies.!!! Surely my daughter should have known this before she had booked and payed for the room???
It was in my opinion the fault of the landlady, who was very rude and said that if the babies were not removed then the whole party would have to leave the premises.
Left a very bitter taste in my mouth. My daughter was offered no apology or refund.. Disgusting.
Suffice to say that the incident didn't spoil the whole thing... Thankfully.

Grade A English cuisine. Best veggie roast in the NE1.

When I visited here, I was pleased with the greeting I received from the bartender. He was friendly and the drinks my party had were nice. It's a very nice place with lots of space and character, and I love how dark and atmospheric it is, especially on a weeknight. I know weekends can ensure the place gets pretty crowded and hectic, but that's just fine for most people.
I will definitely go here again. One of the lovely places of Newcastle. I also like how you can't tell what the place is like from the outside. You have to go inside to appreciate this place!
P. B.
Dog friendly.
Love this bar! Class joint. Really smart inside, great staff and draught samples a plenty to assist in choosing the perfect pint for you.
Huge sofas to collapse into after a busy day shopping/on the sauce.
Great place. Will definitely be returning next time we’re in Newcastle.
Part of the Wylam brewery chain of bars.
K. T.
Food and service very good. Tiny criticism a little too herby and garlicky for Sunday lunch for my taste
G. W.
Very good selection of beers, big pub with lots of seating
C. K.
Decent pub in great location for the Arena and city centre. Good food also
M. C.
I loved this place. I'm in a wheelchair and needed the portable ramp to get in which was brought straight away by a lovely friendly member of staff. This pub has a lovely friendly atmosphere. When we were leaving the ramp was brought straight out. The staff are lovely and friendly, nothing is too much trouble x
S. H.
Sunday lunch for 10 yesterday. 10 clean plates. Food lovely. Thank you
e. d.
Busy pub, huge selection of real ales, larger, wines and spirits available, great efficient and friendly staff
j. z.
Always inviting atmosphere, top lagers, ales & ipa's. Food great and service spot on!
D. D.
Nice pub, helpful staff, good beer.
D. A. C.
Popped in for a couple of drinks on an afternoon off work. Great atmosphere and service.
L. D.
Good grub, can get very busy though, but what do you expect in a pub in Newcastle. Can't fault price or service, all staff are lovely.
A. K.
Came for drinks, such a lovely place and the staff were so friendly
C. P.
Lovely pub in a central location . Nice range of beers served very politely. Great for Sunday roast !
j. k.
Great place. Good food and varied line up of craft ale.
M. W.
Very dog friendly pub. The triple cooked chips were AMAZING too.
S. F.
Plenty of seating with larger tables so it's good for groups. There's is comfortable seating such as couches and booths as well as tables. There's plenty of outdoor seating with outdoor heaters but it's not a sun trap. There's a very good selection on tap of lagers, ales and ciders as well as spirits for the gin and cocktail drinkers. It is a little pricey but it would be a higher standard bar than some others in the area. Its a good spot for a Sunday lunch also.
J. B.
Burger was great, but the chips were a weeny bit crunchy. Excellent ladies and gents behind the bar and a very popular atmosphere.
S. D.
Nice environment but can be loud on a weekend so not somewhere to go to chat ut overall really good place to go
J. m.
Always end our visit to Newcastle in the town wall great atmosphere 😁
H. M.
The Town Wall hosted my 50th birthday in their Cinema Room. Nothing was too much trouble, the beers, venue, staff and evening was first class! Thank you Town Wall!
S. J.
Spacious bar, yet plenty of knooks and crannies to be cosy and quiet to catch up with friends. Decent drinks selection
G. B.
Great food and a nice friendly atmosphere. To all vegans, the vegan burger is the best I've ever had. And I've had a lot!
L.
I like the place, bit dark in places but I suppose that adds to the atmosphere. Different areas to sit , good choice of ales and I've heard food is really good, menu looks good.
A. K.
Lovely spacious pub, good choice of ales, spirits and soft drinks. Prices reasonable worth a visit
D. J.
Absolutely fantastic place for a really decent Sunday Lunch. I had the veggie option which I'd rate highly. Also do a Vegan choice. Desert lovely, the venue and staff were super. We booked a table as it sounded very busy. Also dog friendly for those of you with canine pals.
S. W.
Lovely bar. Sunday lunch was beautiful. Food seemed fresh and properly 'cooked'. A nice change from the vacuum-packed microwave fayre of many pubs. Drinks are pricey, quite prohibitive to be honest, which stops it getting five stars. My double Captain Morgan's spiced rum and diet pop was more than twice the price I usually pay in Wetherspoon's.
S.
Fantastic place, lovely selection of ale and knowledgeable staff. The food is on another level, What more can one ask for
A. H.
Great food, good selection of beers, wines and spirits.
D. C.
A nice place for a quick lunch and a drink. Reasonable number of options on the menu, including a Sunday roast.
J. T.
Great Sunday lunch for a decent price. The Yorkshire puddings are something else and everyone I came out was equally as impressed. The rest of the menu looked good as well and we'll definitely be back to try it. The atmosphere was vibrant and the staff were very polite as well.
N. F.
Lovely pub and great selection of ales
R. C.
Excellent as always!
I meet a friend from uni there about once a year. Every time we are left fully happy with the beer and food selection and quality!
Equally top customer service too.
I'll be going back again, probably within a year with others!
Great bar. Highly recommended.
I have been there for several other occasions - different reasons - only brilliant.
F. M.
Oh I liked this place. Great selection of beers, friendly staff and excellent Sunday lunch. Had wheelchair bound friend along. He was happy with toilet facility and thoughtful staff offered to help push him up the entrance ramp
J. S.
Plenty of seating and the music isn't deafening like some of the city centre pubs. Lots of little nooks and crannies with comfortable sofas. Great range of beers (Lots of local choice too) at prices you would expect.
R. A. W.
It's a very nice, contemporary pub. The menu looked fab although we didn't eat there. It has an eclectic selection of beers, ciders and spirits.
Best of all it is a dog friendly pub and welcoming to all friendly, well behaved pooches 👍
I. C.
Nice pub with selection of beers, does nice food too.
N. R.
Always loved this place, great selection of beers. Marred recently by an incompetent and rude bartender who served an expensive gin & tonic in a plastic half pint glass! After explaining to him why this was possibly not the best vessel to present to my other half (surrounding female bar staff nodding), he just looked bemused. Maybe bar training here needs to include more than just pulling a pint.
G. E.
Definitely a five star review. The Town Wall was absolutely superb, clean and tidy, a lovely atmosphere. The best traditional Sunday lunch I've ever eaten in a pub/restaurant. Right from when I ordered at the bar, the helpful staff were ultra polite and friendly. When the food came I was so pleased that the beef was pink, fresh and so very tender. Unlike so many places where it is grey/brown and over cooked. The lovely little waitress was perfect, both polite and attentive, she couldn't have been more helpful. If I lived closer I'd go there every weekend.
A. C.
Nice place with lovely friendly staff. Food was fine, but not quite enough for me even if I was ill. The lamb was well tasty. Buffalo cauliflower and the sauces was delish. Nice array of beers.
K. H.
Nice staff, good food menu and nice choice of beers.
A. D.
Brilliant little boozer with very friendly staff. Dog friendly too which I have only recently discovered. A great selection of drinks with some local breweries on tap. Plenty of seating inside but very limited parking on the premises.
R. S.
It's a very nice place, quite busy. Also having a £5 minimum charge for card payments is very jammy. I wouldn't have minded so much if there was some signage to notify me before committing to ordering a drink. Now I'm stuck with 11 packets of crisps.
C. G.
Pub with a good beer choice and a good light meal menu. Recommended if you wish to kill a bit of time while waiting for a train.
C. N.
I had a pint of tasty beer!
M. E.
Lamb and Onion Bhaji, Parmasen fries and a pint of lemonade ~£11.
Served quickly by friendly bar staff, food came equally as quickly which is very important at lunchtime given that some customers may be on lunch.
Food was very well presented, but lacked texture and wasn't as tasty as it looked. Portions were good sized for a lunchtime meal but were slightly too expensive in my opinion, the fries being particularly overpriced at £4 / portion.
Good location and atmosphere, food nice, but better value offering around.
J. R.
I don't visit this place too much and if it wasn't for this COVID action I might award it fewer stars because it's not really a bar that appeals to me. However! I hit this venue on a Sunday afternoon with several of the lads. Pubs had only just reopened the day before, post lockdown. The vibe was relaxed. A pleasant grafter welcomed me at the door, my temperature was taken thereby frying my brain so I'm hopelessly liberated of more beer tokens, then I was subjected to a thorough strip search (only joking). Top table service from a top Gent who knew the ropes 100% was the routine. The only time we had to get up from our seats was to nip downstairs to the privy. Check the joint out.
D. B.
Good selection of beer and ales. Not so much selection for lager. Food appeared to look quite nice. There was no smoking area which was a downfall for our group. All in all not bad.
D. T.
Come here often for Sunday dinner and it's always amazing. Staff are super friendly, beer and real ale selection is great. Would advise booking first though as it fills up pretty fast on a sunday!
R. F.
Welcoming pub with a nice feel and some really tasty beers. Food looks great, especially the Sunday roast. Good for drinks on a night out as well. Unfortunately there's a £5 minimum spend on contactless payments which is probably understandable but a restriction in terms of convenience.
S. R. (.
Really nice, relaxed, homely and comfortable atmosphere with a good selection of real ales. Just on the right side of "trendy", I've been back here a few times now and they always serve a good pint. The food menu looks good but I've not had the opportunity to try yet.
It's probably not the sort of place you'd go for a big night out to get pished (I'm getting on a bit now, and those days are behind me) but I'd definitely settle in here for an afternoon or evening to catch up with friends over some good ales or nice wine.
Nice spread of tables and sofas, there's even a downstairs "Cinema Bar" which I imagine you could hire out for a function.
It's a bit classier than other nearby bars which have vomit and bouncers on the doors of a Saturday night.
D. M.
A great range of local and national beers are this pubs forte along with it's comfortable, spacious interior and whilst the food can be hit and miss, it's generally reasonable.
The beer isn't cheap though. If that's what you're looking for, then plenty of other places will cater for you. But it's good beer, with plenty of unusual offerings of lager, bitter and ciders.
There is a little bit of outside seating to the side on Pink Lane, but not a location that gets the sun.
Can get very busy, particularly after work on a Friday, so if you're after somewhere to sit, best to get there early.
Also offers a 'cinema' room for hire, which is a cosy room with it's own bar underneath the building that can be used for special occasions.
All in all, a good, if a little pricey, pub, with good atmosphere.
G. N.
Great service and venue for our little private party last night.
C. R.
Quietish, but on a Monday night not really surprising. Good service and a great range of beers/ales
J. L.
Brilliant service. There were no free tables but the staff fetched us two bar stools and space at the bar.
We had a selection of starters which were excellent.
Now one of my favourite bars in Newcastle.
P. B.
Absolutely stunning interior with a massive, winding bar in the centre. The beer and ale selection is superb, with a lot of local brews on tap. My only issue with it is it can get absolutely heaving depending on the time of day.
S. C.
Good pub with quite good food. the place has a good atmosphere but can be taken over by people travelling to the city on the trains. That can mean stag and hen do's but there is not usually too much disturbance. Good beers on tap and look out for the wall painted by Mr Scruff advertising deep fried paperclips.
K. B.
Lovely pub food was average this time. Chicken burger very dry
B. W.
Great wheelchair accessible pub - with good food and drinks menu. Wheelchair accessible entrance on Thomas Bewick Square . One entering ask the staff to lay a ramp to get down the two small steps into the bar. Accessible toilet accessed with radar key.
S. S. R.
Post Ice skating at the life centre, a short walk away a group of us spent an hour here for a bite to eat around 7.30pm. The service was spot on(quick & delicious). Decor is of a grand standard. I ordered three Chargrilled chicken sharwarma with chickpea salad & flat bread(pomegranates). It was delicious to say & if you minus chicken could also be a great option as a vegetarian (£10).
N. C.
Have always liked the pub. Usually good real ale, architecturally interesting building, pleasant atmosphere. Unfortunately today I was served a pint of the normally very good Toon Waal ale which at first seemed just a bit cloudy so I gave it a chance but by the time I'd had about two thirds of it the remaining third was just a murky soup of floaters.
Took it back to the bar and there was no real response or apology or offer back. Shame really as I like the pub but will not be bsck in the near future.
K. F.
Fantastic atmosphere in a beautiful old building. Food was fantastic and the choice of beers was amazing.
S. B.
Update (April 2013): Been back a couple of times and again really enjoyed the food. I can particularly recommend the Wild Boar Burger
-
Popped in for mid-week lunch. This pub is in a great building, very nicely decorated although the seating plan is a little random.
The girl who served us didn't speak particularly clearly and seemed a little, un-enthusiastic. Was very impressed with the food though. I had the slightly unfortunately named 'sausage fest' sandwich with chips. Nice bread, nice salad, nice sausage, chips were awesome! I'd definitely go back
E. M.
Love this place. Really great interior, lots of large tables with really comfortable seating. Great range of drinks and the staff are very friendly. Fantastic olives also.
P. C.
Good vibe in a popular city centre bar. Set in a beautiful old building just over the road from the central station, it's very handy for travellers. A good range of real and craft ales, well worth a visit.
C. H.
Really enjoyed the basil Tagliatelle and Bolognese. Decent price too.
M. D.
Beautiful Sunday roast. Great service. Felt totally safe with all the covid measures they have in place. Will absolutely be eating there again!
E. E.
Called in for lunch - good burger and fries, reasonable value. Good selection of real ales. Some good keg beers too - really enjoyed the Wylam Jakehead IPA.
C. L.
Love this place. So much choice and lovely bar staff.
I. H.
Great selection of cask and keg ales. Large cross section of clientele. Slightly off the main routes and the entrance is tucked up a side street. Fast helpful staff. I would highly recommend.
n. r.
Great pub with a nostalgic feel, simple, eclectic yet stylish surroundings that take you back to the spit n sawdust of yr grandads local watering hole, with a modern comfortable twist. Enjoy a pint of award winning locally brewed beer in the heart of Newcastle, in a pub where conversation and excellent service take priority, I highly recommend The Town Wall.
S. P.
It's set up for the perfect method of table service. No tab or bill, just order and they bring the drinks with a card machine. Excellent
K. W.
Loved this place. We were in need of a roast dinner after a heavy night and it delivered on every level. Great staff, really tasty food and an all round excellent experience.
M. T.
Really great spot, I was surprised by the find. We had a party there which was a perfect size for the people and made it feel like it was your place. Lovely atmosphere and great drinks selection
L. G.
Great cask selection, friendly staff and there's always some Curtis Mayfield or Al Green playing on the speakers - fantastic place for a pint!
B. D.
Good match day experience...unlike the football. Chicken supreme with cous cous particularly flavoursome. Service with a smile and enough bar staff to get served on a busy lunchtime.
K. F.
Always has a fine selection of drinks and is good for a visit. There is a lot of space, but the place is always busy, so half the battle is finding somewhere suitable to stand.
S. M.
The Town Wall is a place I'd thoroughly recommend.
It's conveniently located a stones throw from Central Station, provides a wide range of craft beers and beverages, does excellent food, has a great atmosphere and great staff.
The Town Wall is maybe a touch on the expensive side but the quality of what's on offer is definitely worth it.
R. W.
Fantastic pub, great selection of beers and local real ales. Food was high quality and good value. Great atmosphere and decor, highly recommended.
K. M.
Good selection of Quality ales at fair prices, space enough for a crowd, pleasant up market pub atmosphere. Quirky and ingenious take on bar food to suit almost anyone.
C.
Not bad. Another place that thinks it's a gastro pub so it sells the food and drink a little more expensively than perhaps it warrants. They would do very well to fix the gas heaters ib the outside area. I'd visit much more often if they did. Just saying.
J. h.
Was here two weeks ago for a few drinks and a catch up with friends was a nice bar not too loud so we could chat and was reasonably priced.
A. M.
Always a lovely pub right next to all amenities and two mins from central station
C. S.
Excellent choice of beers with some interesting architectural features and history. They don't like fancy dress though so rowdy stag/hen parties may want to look elsewhere.
J.
Great pub, lots of nice beer
p. f.
Cracking bar ....greatvlarger and ales
J. H.
Good city centre pub. Wide range of beers on tap. Small menu but my burger was delicious. Busy for a Wednesday night.
J.
Great venue and good food and drink!
Went here for a staff Sunday roast and drinks, food was lovely and the staff were excellent too. Reconnect the Camden Hells lager too, excellent.
J. G.
The excellent beer really makes this bar. Convenient location that makes this place a perfect meeting spot. Gets busy but luckily has pleanty of space!
G. W.
Really good beer. Never had the food from here. It's more of a drinking bar than another bloody gastropub.
J. C.
Nice local ales. Decent food but nothing to write home about. I would go for beers here again if I was in town.
A. T.
Great burgers recommended
L. S.
Among the best pubs in Newcastle. This page has a great atmosphere, a cracking range of beers and other drinks and the food is canny too. Definitely worth a visit.
J. C.
A great place in the city centre to stop for a few quiet drinks or a bite to eat. The menu choices are for a mixture of regional delights and traditional pub food.
F. G.
Been to this bar a couple of times now. They have a good selection of drinks here and the prices are reasonable considering it's in the centre of newcastle. The bar food here is nice too.
s. l.
Nice venue, great staff but a bit pricey
E. S.
Experience nice ambitious thought
M. E.
Food is OK, not as good as our last visit. But still well worth a try, good atmosphere, good beer and service to match.
B. S.
I appreciated the effort made to keep people socially distanced, friendly staff could probably do with an ordering app which is the only reason I didnt give 5 stars
l. h.
Liked it here
Not bad
Great atmosphere
Great waiters
Will come here more often. Fo sho.
S. B.
Great location and good selection of drinks. A lot of space to accommodate groups too.
S. A.
Freezing! They had the doors wedged open when it was already very cold and drafty. Toilets are a bit tired. Food is nice. Good selection of ales.
E. P.
Nice pub. Busy but great food. Love the fact that they do small plates! Nice staff.
R. M.
Nice pub, good range of beer, can be busy and noisy, but that shows how popular it is
P. J. W.
It's a solid 3 stars, 4 on a good day. Decent food, good beer, but staff and general ambience just don't really make the most of it.
A. k.
Decent scran. Excellent Wylam on tap.
O. H.
Good food though expensive. Large selection of home brewed and Continental beers. Got to say last time I was in the atmosphere was very subdued
E. P.
I like it, good range of different types of drinks and mostly get served quickly. Can get super busy though and you can struggle to get a seat.
J. F.
Mixed bag on my recent visit.. some of the IPAs on offer were a bit sketchy but overall a good safe choice
A. S.
We have just had by far the Best Sunday Lunch in along time. Lovely, polite and friendly staff and will be highly recommending to Our Family n Friends
Q. “. G. N.
I've only been once however I lost 4 hours here. We went on a work night out and started off in the Town Wall. The drinks are a little pricey however the general atmosphere and staff are great.

J. c.
Love this pub but, match days are a nightmare no where near enough staff on,you can stand 10 to 15 minutes before being served we have now moved on as a party of approx 12 to 15 sad really as we really liked it.
S. P.
Nice pub with a wide selection of beer and good pub food. Service and beer quality can suffer when it's really busy
D.
Nice bar, not too expensive but not too crowded either. Good place to meet up, but we always end up staying.
B. Y.
Some good beers on sale. Friendly staff with a good knowledge of the beers. Prices are a bit steep but quality of beer is high
M. L.
Good beer, good service, job done!
a. y. m.
Poor food, went in at 6.45 and ordered food however no tables available, when food arrived it was wrong, and the mint lamb burger i ordered was a beef burger, if i had of wanted a beef burger i would have been dissapointed. Was not asked if food was ok, plates left on table for 30 mins after eating.
l. w.
decent food, good staff, good selection of lagers, ales and wines/spirits. Reasonable priced for a city centre bar
S. J.
Great pub, decent selection of drinks and good service
