Reviews of Hare & Hounds
D. A.
Have read some mixed reviews on here but thought I would give it a go as staying near by! True the place is a little dirty, I had a squashed chip and bit of broccoli under my chair which I presume was from the last people but I have to say the staff were very friendly and the food was great, we didn’t have dessert as the meals were so big. Wide choice of meals for all the family and would definitely eat there again.

Can't thank Saoirse and her team enough. They made a fantastic effort with everything to make the wedding reception a success. Special thanks to Sue for decorating the cake. The buffet was excellent and extremely good value for money. Everything tasted amazing and there was plenty of it. Can't say enough good things about the whole experience! Very highly recommended ❤️

This place is amazing! We went here 7 years ago and was the best meal on the island. We returned 7 years later, exactly, and we were not disappointed. I only wish we had eaten here every day during our stay. All other places we had been the food was poor and very overpriced. This place, the staff are lovely and attentive. We had one particular waitress (wish I knew her name) she had dark short hair with an accent. She was lovely. To where my son wanted to give her a ten pound tip. The steak was cooked to perfection. The macaroni cheese with brie was full of flavour. The vegan fish and chips were lovely and the hunters chicken was amazing along with halloumi fries. There was nothing we could fault. I am fussy with my steaks as they never get cooked to medium, this was spot on. For a group of four, drinks two starters and 4 mains, all for £70. That's a great price. This place is a must eat. We are all fussy and like different things, this place ticked all the boxes. Traditional on the inside, lovely ambience. Just lovely!!

Nice enough pub. Clean, staff friendly and helpful. Food was nice enough, and good portions for the price.

Very impressed with this delightful pub. We went because of the extensive menu; plenty for a vegetarian family plus fish dishes for my parents. We felt welcomed as soon as we arrived as the manager and staff were all so friendly and helpful. I was rather frazzled after taking my four children out for the day and the staff recognised this and were immediately supportive and reassuring, and offered colouring packs for entertainment. Two of my children have additional needs which makes meals out quite stressful but again the staff took it all in their stride. The food was delicious and the portions were good sizes. My son loved the vegan fish and chips in particular, and the spicy cauliflower wings were gorgeous. The food was very well priced too which offered great value for money. The play area kept my kids happy for while which was a bonus. And when my son forgot to take his colouring pack and we came back for it the staff very kindly searched it out for us; nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend!

The staff were all super polite. We went on a Sunday for a roast dinner and went with my dog and my under 1 year old at the time and the staff were super helpful and accommodating. Love that we were able to finish a walk and come with our dog for lunch. The food was absolutely delicious as well. Great portion sizes and great quality! We will be returning
E. G.
Absolutely fantastic pub, we found this on our holiday and visited twice. Very accommodating with our dog and extremely friendly staff. Both Stacey and Ross are an asset to the pub. Food was fantastic both times. We are a little disappointed that we do not live on the Island and cannot visit again till our next holiday. Well worth the visit but worth booking in advance.

It helped that I visited on a nice sunny day. A good menu... I quite like Greene King pubs. A mix up with the food order only made the experience more enjoyable... ordered chicken mushroom and leek pie but got signature mushroom pie - it was really nice (no chicken or leek of course) and filling with a good suet crust.
B. W.
Really friendly staff and the food was excellent. The gluten free burgers are 👌.

Had an absolutely fantastic meal here tonight. Ross and Stacey were very welcoming. The chef's did an amazing job. Even short staffed they did a great job to welcome anyone who came into the premises
H. F.
Really nice pub and great food. Not the first time we've been here and won't be the last. A little difficult to get into in an electric wheelchair but I got in and out ok. Lovely food and great service by the staff
J. O.
Nice menu although maybe a few more salad options on such a hot day would have been welcome. We all enjoyed our food and were impressed with the service. Happy we booked.
G. B.
We had an excellent meal, the staff were very friendly and the service excellent.
The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and the meal was good value for money.
We will definitely visit again
M. G.
Overall I liked it, the staff were helpful friendly. The food was good, garlic bread was a bit soggy. I hadn't been there for years, I would say the decor is just a little tired, about time Greene king did a bit of a refurb.
S. B.
Went here for a meal and found the staff very friendly even when I spent ages finding my military discount code. As for the pub itself there is plenty of parking and when you enter you will welcomed with a homely fee. Unlike a lot of pubs the size of the food portions is large and full of flavour something you will not find in most pubs. For a country establishment the prices are reasonable. The question is would I return? The answer is without doubt.
K. D.
Food was ok less meat than expected for a Sunday roast. Service was friendly, but the place shows a bit dirty.
S. T.
Really enjoyed our visit here today, all staff members were friendly and welcoming, lovely team. We had Sunday lunches, fantastic portion sizes there was no room for pudding, although the kids managed space for one 😁
J. D.
Went for dinner with family for a birthday celebration. The staff were very attentive, helpful and polite. All our meals were very good and served promptly. Thank you!
P.
It looked so promising when looking at the menu! No prosecco, no ice either was not good start. 3 of us had pies (steak and ale X2, chicken and leek x1) and one sea bass and prawn risotto. Pies and chips looked great but were Luke warm in the middle and lacked any chunks of meat/chicken...all gravy! Two very small seabass fillets on a dryish rice was not risotto either so all parties left a little meh! No Eton Mess, Puddings arrived with wrong sides and again were average at best. Seemed to be lack of care and it wasn't even busy.
If we hadn't had paid before we ate we would have asked for part refunds but as we Brits do we chalked it down to experience 👎👎

We holiday regularly on the island and had not gone to the hare and hounds for some time but was glad we went back, staff were friendly and we ordered 2 steaks which were excellent, beer was great so happy customer here.
H. A.
Amazing staff, the food was the best we have had in the UK so far and so worth the trip if on the Isle of Wight. The drinks are good too!!
H. G.
Friendly staff and nice food. Not many beers on draught when we visited. A bit of a wait to have order taken and served but they were busy with people all arriving at once and apologised for the wait.
J. B.
Dissapointed food good but staff cold and distant. Always used to be a welcoming place to eat.
Visited again on the 19th November with family it was an absolute disaster. They were short staffed. We all ordered our meals but one was missed off, so four eating and one not. The staff were very apologetic meal reordered and eventually delivered, it was uncooked and returned to the kitchen. The replacement arrived and that was uncooked.
After which we paid for the food we had eaten with profuse apologies from the staff we left and went home very dissapointed.

We had a fantastic experience at the hare and hounds. It was a soggy lunchtime last Thursday when we arrived .we were greeted at the door by staff in masks who asked if we had booked. We replied we hadn't pre booked and it was just a chance there would be space for us. It was explained to us very politely that due to the current situation only so many patrons could be catered for at any one time, which we totally understood. However if we didn't mind a short wait we could be accommodated when it was clear and safe to do so. We were more than happy to wait so had a drink was shown the menus to browse.when the next available table was prepared we was served in a courteous manner and everything was done in a safe manner keeping distance where possible all staff wore masks and all tables sanitised when became vacant. During our dining many people arrived and again the staff were at the door explaining politely to potential diners there was not room at the current time but were offered the chance to wait with drinks of they chose to do so. Our meal was very enjoyable ,choosing something from the large menu is a challenge in itself. Dave and all the staff were very friendly, attentitive and made our lunch an extremely enjoyable experience. Thank you Dave and your team for doing such a great job at this particular difficult time. Keep up the great work and stay safe.We look forward to returning again very soon.

On our first day driving from the ferry, we stopped at the traffic lights, saw this beautiful pub on our left and I told my partner, turn round, I want to go in there. I can tell you, it was so nice and greeted with friendly bar staff who were quick to serve us. It's beautiful inside very spacious and welcoming. We sat outside with the sun shining on us, I admired the thatched roof the flowers all in bloom, wow very nice. To the rear was another sitting area, large car park, supper if you have dogs as we have. Would go there again when we visit in September 2018. Thank you :)
W.
Wonderful food and service, Nola and Stacy especially. Great help with our Gluten-free family members.
J. M.
Holidaying on the Island, we had been here before and had been disappointed but now discovered that The Hare and Hounds was under new management .
We had a lovely meal from a good menu all reasonably priced. The staff were friendly, efficient and welcoming.
Plenty of parking, an outside children's play area.Would happily visit again.
C.
Great place. The food was fab and reasonably priced. I have no complaints at all. The pub itself is picturesque and the beer garden is huge. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would 100% recommend and will be returning.
c. w.
Saw the pub from the road and thought it looked lovely . BH so booked in advanced, arrived, quickly seated drink and food order taken. Food arrived amazingly quickly !! Large portions on lovely cooked meals ... Even my daughters altered meal came perfectly prepared. Food was lovely (if a little salty .. but we eat little salt)
Desserts orded and staff very attentive to ensure we didn't wait long.
Nothing was too much to much trouble, food hot, well cooked and very tasty. Thank you to all for making it a lovely evening. The Wilson Family
M. M.
Lovely little place, friendly staff who were very helpful, and great food
R. S.
The Hare and Hounds is an extremely quaint looking building partially thatched and deceptively large. The inside is on varying levels in all directions making for very private and cosy nooks and larger open areas.
The food is good and the staff excellent. To order and get drinks you go to the bar which I feel detracts a little from the experience, but after that food arrives promptly and hot, the service is excellent as previously mentioned.the staff being especially pleasant and friendly.
Toilets are clean and the car park large if a little bumpy.
B. T.
A highly recommend dog and customer friendly island pub because of its very pleasant and helpful staff and manager; it’s good value food; and the wide range of vegan meal and wine options it offers - all clearly marked. Greene King and its local staff at the Hare and Hounds should be commended for their focus on good customer service and embracing cruelty free food options.
M. B.
A lovely country pub to visit and enjoy a meal and drink. Staff very helpful and polite.
My wife and I enjoyed our meal and drink Friday evening.
We were not disappointed.
D. W.
had a very enjoyable meal for two sat by a window, very good service and meals.
we noticed other couples unfortunately had to be turned away as they had not booked a table, so its a very popular venue, we will definitely return..
Lovely experience.
B. M.
A good clean and family friendly place to eat with the added bonus of catering for dogs. A varied value for money menu served by helpful and friendly staff. A good alternative to the pubs in Shanklin and Ventnor. Not too busy and lots of space between tables in the restaurant area. Easily accessible from COWES and SANDOWN. Thank you to the Management and staff for providing an excellent dining experience for me and my family.
S. C.
Excellent pub. We visit each time we come to the IoW. Staff are superb, friendly and efficient. Food is excellent. Great selection of drinks. What’s not to like :)
K. G.
Food very good had quite a few meals there while on the island, beer also well enjoyed with friendly staff which is always a plus, keep it up guys and girls will go back

We visit this pub everytime we visit the island. Good food. Friendly helpful staff. Traditional old pub style with lots of interesting pics and info on the walls.

Lovely pub and friendly staff.
Good selection of food and drink. All very nice. Will be back soon.

Gorgeous Country Pub! Reasonable prices and they have deals on Wed-Thu-Fri £7 for a specific dish. Good location and great Ales.

Just come home from the mainland and ravenous. Called into the Hare and Hounds and luckily they were happy to serve food even though it was late. The lovely Irish landlady could not have been more friendly! The food was ordered and served in record time. And was delicious. My husband ordered the sea bass risotto and I has the lamb pie. Both delicious. Would definitely recommend!
D. D.
Great food and interesting design. The staff are nice and the prices are good. Don't miss a stop for a meal or even bigger events. They will not charge you for the venue booking if you have any bigger events in mind.
R.
Me and the family enjoyed a lovely meal and a catch up at the hare and hounds this evening lovely food, lovely staff ,lovely atmosphere. See you again soon thanks for having us

Mixed reviews…
Arrived after my husband made a phone booking. We were shown to our table, but my mother had to go up and ask for children’s menus- (she was told to get it herself…).
Ordered drinks, and the lady came with the tray of drinks and just dumped them on the end of our table for us to help ourselves (was a first…). The smaller and larger childrens meals were practically the same sized portions, and the smaller portion had more chips than the larger which we found odd. Toilets were just rundown, like no one cares.
Positives- the male staff who served us food and puddings were very friendly and polite. The food was genuinely really nice, and really couldn’t fault it, so credit where it’s due.
I. K.
Booked a table in advance but they couldn't find our booking when we arrived but they did have a table available. Only problem was it was in the gloom in the back of the restaurant. Had to wait over half an hour for our food, would have had a dessert but couldn't wait any longer. Food was good and the waiter that served us was very nice, apologising for the wait but overall the experience was very average.
D. S.
Food was OK,but it was busy Sunday and I think they did not have enough team..our deserts were forgotten and I needed to ask refund, because we needed to go. Lovely outside seating area with playground for kids. Big car park.
E. S.
Really nice food, green king pub but food was much better than normal chainpub
J. C.
lovely food good service just before our ferry home
W. S.
Ordered food and drinks and they lost ticket for drinks , had to prove we paid for them. My pie was ok and chips very tasty but friends steak was all gristle and inedible, to give them due, they did refund his meal.
A. B.
Just had a lovely roast in this pub. Food was amazing and the staff were so friendly. Would definitely recommend. Will definitely be back
F. M.
Nice place to have a drink and a meal.
Very spacious.
A. H.
Fantastic place to eat, very accommodating, food cooked to perfection, I'd like to thank the chef chanice for a lovely meal and all the staff, will definitely be returning
S. H.
Poor service. No naan bread with main.Ordered prawn and avocado cocktail as a starter. Hardly any avocado and half a lettuce. Ordered chicken Tikka masala - had run out of naan bread!!! Chicken not as lean as I would like. Had to wait a long time for starter and for main. Place not busy - about 7 pm. Pudding arrived much more speedily and was very nice.
Owner has asked for more detail from me, but don't know how to reply; so have expanded on review.
D. R.
Friendly efficient staff and good food in pleasant surroundings. We had sea Bass, pie and chicken, and lovely puds, very nice 😋
S. H.
Came for lunch with some friends and we were very happy with the service. Polite and efficient staff. Thank you

Good food, nice decent portions / value, quick service, nice little kids playground, thumbs up all round
S. B.
Had an amazing meal here this evening!!! They fit 9 of us in at short notice and, because were tight for time
For getting ferry, they went out of the way to take our orders and get food to us swiftly!
Food was delicious, service with a smile and would def highly recommend as a brilliant place to have a meal as a family!!!!! 🥰🥰 Big thanks particularly to Kev who got us all organised and was so efficient in sorting our orders!
G. B.
Ross and Rob, thanks for serving us and we enjoyed the steaks.
H. P.
Had a lovely 3 meat Sunday roast.
Easy to find..returning customers.
R. H.
Sunday roast here was fantastic! Food was spot on and was cooked perfectly. Had the lamb and it was juicy and tender, the carrots were honey glazed and the roast potatoes were in beef dripping. Everything was just right and the pub itself is lovely with a play area for little ones and a decent children's menu too.
V. B.
Had a lovely dining experience here, it's a beautiful place & has a very cosy feel to it! The food was absolutely delicious! I had the tomato soup (being a fussy vegetarian I was hoping to have a jacket potato but unfortunately they only serve them until 5pm) but the soup was very good, although next time I will order 2 bowls as I think it's only available as a starter dish so you don't get enough in the bowl to have it as a main meal. But for the price I'm happy to do that! The others all enjoyed there food too, only complaints were going the side of chips were only warm not very hot (compared to the rosemary fries which were steaming & SO GOOD!) & unfortunately the mash potato could be picked up in one big clump, rather than being soft & creamy as expected, but even still, we all loved it there & will definitely be returning! Very friendly staff & helped us out when we made an error when ordering on the app too :) They also have a play area in the garden for children & outdoor seating too. Would recommend visiting!
M. R.
Lovely pub. Friendly service. Gorgeous setting.
K. K.
Pleasant enough steak and chips. Negative thoughts, the state of the car park.
M. a. S.
They got our orders wrong, but made up for it with free pudding, meals were ok
K. S.
Looks can be deceptive. Beautiful thatched premises very tired inside.
Went for dinner with the plan of further bookings whilst on holiday but left without planning a return visit.
Food okay with a few blips.... starter and main course arrived together and staff seemed surprised at refusal to accept all. Steak overcooked when asked for med rare. Salmon rare and returned to cook thoroughly. Several items not available although showing on menu.
Young staff pleasant. Manager could have been more proactive for example overseeing staff and checking if meal was OK which it clearly was not.
I'd give it a miss in future.
S. J.
We have just had a wonderful meal at the Hare and Hounds. We hadn't book but the lovely Irish lady managed to find us a table . We only waited around 10 min before our food arrived.Me and my husband had the slow cooked lamb from the special board. It was full of flavour and melted in our mouth . The kids had burgers and my son information us it was the best he had on the island so far ( he lives on burgers). The staff was very friendly and even when my son requested cheese garlic bread for desert it was given . I highly recommend this pub ☺️.
N. T.
Lovely location, there is a couple of peacocks roaming the gardens. The food is lovely for a chain and reasonably priced.
G. W.
Lovely staff, lovely pub, great food. Will be back
w. L.
Friendly staff, lovely food definitely worth a visit
R. W.
Good food, good portions, good beer, pleasant staff.
L. W.
My husband and I went for an evening meal, we were greeted at the door and shown to our table. We were served drinks and our food came out quickly. I had the beef pie which was full of meat and my husband had the gourmet burger. Both were delicious!!!!! We managed to squeeze in a pudding which didn't disapoint. Lovely restaurant with wonderful staff and amazing food. Can't wait to go back.
C. S.
Very nice place. Great welcome when we arrived. Only went in for a drink but decided to stay for a light bite. The pastrami sandwich was delicious. Very professional service from Ross and the lovely lady who served us our food and the man who ordered our drinks.(sorry I don't know your names). Highly recommended.
W. P.
Excellent value for money..great choices on the menu...and friendly and helpful staff..made us feel most welcome..will definitely return 🙂
C. J.
Great staff and service. Lovely location and asthetic! Would recommend
S. P.
Popped in for lunch yesterday. Well looked after by Kevin and Sue and our fish goujon sandwiches were spot on.
r. l.
Last time in this pub was seven years ago .food then was bad so i looked in kitchen that was bad as well ever the kitchen Cockroaches had enough and were leaving when I opened the door .
recently
Invited to pub first time back food was OK staff friendly could not fault it . Must be new management.
P. C.
Decent pub food, they were obviously a little short staffed but the service was still excellent and the staff were very attentive which made up for the slightly slow service.
They serve baby food pouches which is a great addition for the kids menu as we popped in last minute for dinner and were relieved to find something suitable for my son to have with some finger food off our plates.
S. J.
We have just had a great 2 course meal, a sharing platter and a main course each. Everything was well cooked and presented, and matched the menu description. The staff were friendly and fun, and really helped make this an enjoyable experience. Thanks to you all from table 51.
M. L.
My sister in law got married and had the reception in this fantastic pub. Landlady and partner along with the head barman made you feel like you had been drinking in there for years. I will be coming back to the island again and will certainty visit. This place deserves your custom. Please visit if staying nearby.
D. H.
It was ok, decent food for the price for adults. Unfortunately out of quite a few pasta and garlic bread based dinners. Kids sausage meal wasn't great, but pub was good with discounting the kids meal. Would go again.
K. G.
Not covid secure, despite current rules. No staff wearing masks, I used to work in hospitality and table cleaning observed was less than I'd expect pre covid. Items not available from the menu but not informed until we ordered. Drink order wrong 2x. Only told there would be a minimum half hour wait for food after we ordered, apparently due to a large party but we didn't see any evidence of a large party unless they came on the bus! Bread with soup was soggy as if frozen. Over all disappointing, we had my elderly Father in Law with us and he was reluctant to go elsewhere or we would have left.
K. H.
Good food nice pub service a little slow
S. T.
Lovely food and such great value for money, the service is a 5 star with warm and welcoming staff would highly recommend.
A. C.
Lovely pub with really friendly staff. Nice to sit in the sun outside! Extensive menu and the food was great- perfect fries! They were very busy when we went but the staff dealt with it excellently. Highly recommended.
A. C.
Being lucky enough to have a table outside in the glorious weather, four of us had a great lunch here, Sat 5th June. Although many of the white wines were off (after a clearly busy Bank Holiday and lots of thirsty patrons), the waiter apologised profusely and offered alternatives. The food was as good as any we'd had in 'finer' restaurants. Delivered hot and perfectly cooked. The team are very attentive and were always checking to see if tables needed clearing, drinks replenishing etc. Well worth a visit
S. B.
Nice pub, good food, excellent friendly staff.
B. H.
Staff were pleasant, restaurant was clean.
My drink was flat and some of the meals were just okay. Chicken had a lot gristle, beef tuff, had a lot of fat and pastry very hard to cut.
The burger, gammon and cajun chicken were all very nice.
So mixed reviews from our group.
b. g.
Lovely pub and friendly service we will visit again
M. D.
Friendly staff. Food very good. Large portions. Good drinks selection.
J. K.
Friendly pub with a good location but kids weren't blown away by the food (pizzas) and neither were we to be honest. Nothing particularly bad worth complaining about but nothing that would compel me to visit again. Lovely friendly staff though which is a selling point.
D. C.
Beautiful oldy world pud. I had a beef dinner mainly full of fat I ordered extra cauliflower cheese, thankfully I did as portions for the value were small. Says lashings of gravy but not enough to cover food
N. C.
We ate her whilst on holiday. The food was great. The service was excellent. Will definitely be back soon
W. K.
Good beer and a large beer garden. Dog friendly and the staff are very friendly and polite
S. M.
Food very very poor. Sunday roast didn't even look appetising. Two roasts we had were mostly wasted. Burger was only a third eaten. Decided to buy dessert on way home in Tesco.
N. H.
The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Ross makes the most delicious hot chocolates. We love the pub and the food is outstanding, good value. 👍five star all the way
H. B.
Had a lovely Christmas lunch. Food was good and well cooked with the most delicious dessert. Service was a little slow but very friendly, however, it was Christmas Day and we were in no hurry! Nice, clean pub with what looks like a lovely little play area for children. Have been before, would highly recommend and would return again.
E. N.
Good and reasonably priced food. Catered very well for my ceoliac son which was a big help!
Nice outside areas front and back of pub and a large carpark
M. B.
I read review before I booked this place and was a bit dubious. I have to say though the staff were absolutely fantastic. There was no wait when we got there,( and we were 30 min early), all the staff were welcoming and friendly and couldn'tdo enoughfor us. There was four of us and we all had different meals and a shared platter. All the food was good, even my fussy eater daughter ate all hers. The final bill was less than I expected to.
All in all I'd definitely eat there again.
T. C.
Would be definitely coming back food was amazing and the staff so friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend this place to anyone
R. J.
1 year later and we returned for a meal and again it was very nice😀👍 Stunning thatched roof pub with loads of charm, drove past it to visit the needles and decided to give it a try the following day, a very warm and friendly welcome, taken to our table and was served by a friendly and helpful young man, the food was great a and very sensible prices, when we return to the IOW we will definitely call again, highly recommend trying this fantastic pub.
M. T.
It is a good place to go and eat. Got an outdoor play area. The food was good.
R. B.
Brilliant staff very nice pub .

Visited whilst on holiday, lovely pub with character. Food was hot and tasty but they tried to add extra cost to bill by add a portion of chips. Queried with manager who apologised and recalculated bill and deducted 20% for there error. Would recommend. Thank you.
A. C.
Friendly, good grub, as is the norm these days everywhere, the menu had some out of stocks. Didn't detract from the experience though
M. V.
Drove past this lovely looking pub today and had to stop by for drink. Sat outside originally but the weather began to change and the bar staff asked us if we would like to come inside. Ordered a round of drinks and some bar snacks and couldn't fault the service and the staff were all very friendly, dogs welcome too :)
A. P.
Lovely dog friendly pub with lovely Roast.
M. P.
Called in on the off chance for my son and myself to eat, unfortunately at this time they wete unable to fit us in but went to extremeasures to try, we did however manage to book for tge following evening, food and service absolutely fantastic, reasonably priced but very welcoming, to the point we returned on the lunchtime the next day to eat before leaving yo catch the ferry. Highly recommend this pub / restaurant
A. W.
Had lunch around Christmas week.
Nice welcome from the staff.
We ordered a couple of sandwiches with Chips and salad.
The Chios frying fat needed changing and the cheese on the American deli sandwich should of been melted but wasn’t.
Also the dinning area is in need of updating but overall the larger was good and the food was average and the staff were grate.
V. S.
Absolutely lovely setting and gorgeous Sunday roast!
S. S.
Good enough food for a chain pub, shame the menu was limited but that's not uncommon atm post covid.
Play area was good but not the biggest so can get quite busy.
The car park could do with resurfacing also. Surprisingly a few peacocks wandering around the car park and pub grounds.
G. C.
Food was good and the service was very good thanks for a good lunch time, will see you again.
M. D.
Have eaten here 3 times during our holiday.
Staff went out of their way to accommodate us when we arrived late on the saturday.
Food was lovely and staff friendly and welcoming. The manageress is a credit to the pub and you can tell she genuinely enjoys her job.
The second night we again ate late and missed out in Sunday lunch but they did their best to adjust the menu options to suit everyone in our group.
Our last meal was steak night and the steaks were delicious.
The duty manager spent time chatting with us making sure we had a good meal and appologising for delay as this week they have had some issues with staff emergency illness.
We don't mind waiting as food was nice. Reasonably priced and good service. Everyone was polite to our 7 year old and baby and dog.
Thank you again.
R. D.
Lovely little place. I say little, it's not really, it's kinda big inside. Lots of corners and cool walls to explore. Very friendly staff!
k. t.
An amazing pub ! The kids play are is fab with goals , golf, swings , climbing frame ect and the food was amazing the best roast dinner we have ever had and massive
family of 6 including 2kids , a toddler. 100% recommend !
B. P.
Ngl wasnt expecting loads when i walked in but a nice spacios resturant greeted me
The bathrooms are very hygenic
And the food mmmm the whole family loved it
The waitressing was lovley such kind staff
Dont know how its not 5/5 stars

A large group of us swarmed on this really friendly pub and the staff were so cheerful and accommodating. We ordered food at a busy time so the kitchen was flat out - they were good enough to warn other people that turned up and stopped further orders until it was a bit less mad. Would definitely recommend here for a nice pub lunch.
J. G.
Service excellent. Have been there 3 times during our holiday. Bar staff excellent. The young man who served us remember us when we came back. Food excellent and portions enough. Very good value for money. Best we found on the island. They warn you about the wait in busy times,.on one.occasion an hour, but well worth it. Lovely big pub suitable for all ages. Will miss it when we go home
R. M.
Great quantity of mussels.
Good seafood risotto.
P. B.
Nice pub with two outside areas, one behind the pub with children's play area, the other in front of the pub by main road.
Large parking area.
Varied menu with typical pub grub rather than out of ordinary.
I would visit again.
A. S.
This was an excellent pub with a very welcoming and efficient staff.
The menu was varied and in our case Coeliacs were well catered for
Food and beer very good and service excellent. Eat inside or out
Look no further!
L. P.
Lovely food and great customer service, would visit again :)
A. M.
We came across this place on our way to our holiday bungalow. Wow what a nice place. Massive pub with a nice atmosphere. The food is well priced and the quality was outstanding. We had a burger and chips aand I had the fish and chips. My Son in law said it was the best burger he has ever tasted and he is very fussy on the quality of his food. Our fish and chips was perfectly cooked and perfect batter. Go and try it you will be impressed!
A. H.
Its a great pub. Happy, polite, efficient, helpful service, with good food, made it all good
A. L.
Lovely food, very helpful staff
Z. W.
Booked in for 1pm, welcome was great, however I ordered the chicken, mushroom & leek pie which was very tasty, but some of the pastry I couldnt either cut or bite into!! Not a generous portion of vegetables either. My husband ordered a Turkey roast, meat was tender & tasty - the stuffing was so hard, he couldnt cut through it!! Asked for a replacement but that was just the same. Have been before & has always been great, maybe today was an off day, shame really.
S. R.
We went to the Hare&hound without booking ,there were 11 people in our party and they couldn't do enough for us ! They moved tables around for us and got our order through very fast to say how busy they were. Food came out looking amazing and also tasted great 👍 would highly recommend this place !
C. T.
Lovely food and friendly Staff!
Relaxed and chilled atmosphere, enjoyed our visit! :)
N. H.
Really enjoyed a nice meal with the family food was very nice and good value! All the staff were great especially Ross who made us feel so welcomed and nothing was to much trouble will definitely be coming back thanks!
G. P.
Excellent food , staff very friendly , would definitely recommend.
N. S.
Beautiful building and very pretty surroundings but the food was a little disappointing the 'served pink' roast beef was very well done and roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding a little under done. Service was polite and courteous.
P.
Great staff, great atmosphere, Dog friendly very welcoming! Enjoyed both times we ate their this week. Highly recommended 👌
M. L.
Very nice thatched pub, which is part of the Greene King network. The staff were absolutely brilliant especially Jack who helped us with customising our menu choice for my mother-in-law who has advanced dementia. The food was prepared and presented rapidly, my Scampi and chips was perfect, my son's burger was a little greasy but otherwise very good. But for the greasy burger, which was still tasty and very edible this would have been a 5 star rating. I would definitely come back here.
N. G.
Great pub, lovely food. I have to mention how amazing the staff were. Very friendly and seated us at the perfect table for us and our 2 dogs.
M. T.
Quick stop for a drink and a snack. Staff were fantastic - friendly & helpful. Menu was varied & looked appetising. We just had a snack as we had plans for an evening neal jater. Our foods was tasty & set us up for completing our journey.
G. S.
Food only ok, not everything available from the menu. The starter and main arrived at the same time so service was a bit disjointed! Staff pleaseant, not sure what the purpose of the manager was because he didn't. Would I go back, maybe? Not in a hurry.
S. B.
Staff were so helpful and friendly. Food was great.
J. T.
We were very well looked after by Kevin and the rest of the team. Had a lovely meal, food was very good and kevin made us feel very welcome. Would highly recommend
J. T.
Lovely staff lovely pub well worth a visit
T. W.
Beautiful little pub. Lovely staff and well run. Lovely areas outside with a kids area. Wishing well too! Well worth a visit for some lovely food and drink. A1
R. P.
A lovely looking pub which promised much. Staff were friendly and the interior pretty good, although not as good as the exterior. The drinks were fine, food was very greasy and salad was dead. But I think if they cooked better, they would be spot on because the batter on the fish fingers was lovely and the chicken burger was also very good. A small change would make a big difference!
G. C.
Very welcoming and friendly staff, lovely building and nice atmosphere. Food was superb and served in a timely manner. Would recommend the Hare & Hounds to anyone. Look forward to visiting again later this week
S. p.
Popular thatched roofed pub, reasonable menu, food was OK but nothing special. Some staff on top of their game, others not so. Average prices, in fact everything just average.
T. W.
Great pub and atmosphere! The two girls running it are gems, so friendly and give a very big warm welcome to anyone who comes in! You are definitely guaranteed to leave with sore cheeks from laughter! Would go back in a heart beat!
B. D.
Great evening out tonight. Staff very friendly and welcoming food was delicious. Felt good to be out in a very safe and clean environment . Well done to all the staff couldn't ask for anything more keep up the good work. Definitely well worth a visit.
S. W.
Service was quite slow but we we're warned about this. I ordered 2 kids meals but only one arrived. The first one (sausage and mash) was very dry. There was no veg, no straws, no kids drinks. The staff were very polite and attentive. But a disappointing visit
N. M.
Adult meals were good sized and reasonably priced.
The kids meals however were sadly lacking and in particular the macaroni cheese literally left a bitter aftertaste.
We had to ask twice for our table to be cleaned after previous diners.
The barman was under pressure however he was busy but kept a smile on his face and the queue moving.
J. P.
We Had a family late lunch and was delighted, they have not let us down on any dish, 10 of us, and we are going back soon, delighted
N. T.
Food was great! Really enjoyed our evening out!
C. C.
Took over two hours in total to get all of our food. No hurry to get anywhere so ok on this occasion. I enjoyed my brie mac & cheese. My daughter said the lasagne wasn't as good as mine and remained uneaten 😆 My husband couldn't have his first or second option as had run out of items so he was left with an average burger. Price was very reasonable & staff very friendly.
A. P.
Lovely meal, and great service from Ross H and the rest of the team. Made to feel very welcome with our 10 month old daughter. Would definitely recommend it.
C. F.
We ordered a pulled pork & Apple sandwich and a chicken & bacon both on Brown.
It was very quiet, but waited half an hour for the food. It was really nice and well presented. Enjoyed it very much had plenty of filling, my only criticism was that the bread was very soft and not very thick, therefore it was difficult to eat without a knife and fork
R. F.
Lovely food friendly staff
S. J.
Honestly cannot give enough praise for our visit there whilst on holiday
Food was delicious, and although not quick service, the waitress explained why and gave us a really interesting overview of the history of the building including showing us the star attraction, a human skull 😆
Great service, great food, great location, will 100% return in future
A. c.
Lovely old pub good menu friendly staff
J. C.
Great customer services very quick food
D. C.
The decor and overall feel of this chain of pub/restaurant is welcoming and the menu has good choice however in the 2 different times we visited (The Crab being the other one) the food was not 100%. The Burger I had was excellent, the fries were unfortunately Luke warm at best. At the other venue the steak wasnt cooked well but okay to eat. The fish and chip meals are very good. It wouldnt stop me eating here but I do hope Greene King tighten up, give their staff the support they need and make these venues as good as they need and deserve to be.
l.
I've just had my mum's Surprise birthday there and couldn't fault anything about the night. The staff have been fantastic from letting me preorder food to being understanding when the table size shrunk. The staff on tonight have been wonderful getting our food out as quick as is physically possible and letting us have tabs across the group. If you want to have a party I highly recommend this wonderful pub and Kyle the bartender has been the perfect host very helpful, polite and friendly. Well done Hare and Hounds 5 stars all round
C.
Went for my sons 7 birthday and I can say that we felt really welcome the food was fantastic and the service was very helpful plus it's dog friendly which was brilliant cause I could bring my dog in with no fuss thank you for having us.
I. G.
Had Sunday lunch with my wife and children here (June 2016). Food is good here. The roast dinner is a good size portion, with huge Yorkshire Pudding and a good selection of vegetables.
Prices are reasonable (4 meals and drinks approximately £41). Service was good, and the staff friendly.
J. C.
Absolutely loved the food. Fantastic quality, generous portions for fab prices! Going back for my birthday on Thursday. Awesome staff too! Kids meal deal is also amazing for the price!
L. S.
Absolutely brilliant food. One of the best places we've eaten on the island. Calamari was beautiful and fresh. Scallops were perfect. Gammon was perfect. Ribs were soo tender they literally fell of the bone and the bourbon sauce was gorgeous. Dog and child friendly. Prices were worth it 100%.

This is a pleasant traditional pub situated in the middle of lovely countryside. Ample parking and outdoor seating. We visited on a Sunday evening and although the staff were friendly and helpful, the steak was not great and two steaks ordered rare came medium. Our waitress and the barman were very apologetic about this and about running out of clean wine glasses (we had to drink our Merlot off tumblers). Not the end of the world, but not completely satisfactory. Easy enough problems to solve! Other food orders were enjoyed. Willing to give them another go at a quieter time.
S. P.
Social distancing of outside tables very good. Staff extremely friendly however, I didnt feel safe when one member of staff continually delivered drinks and food outside with their face visor up wearing it like a hat. The member of staff was extremely close to us and others. I believe the visor is to protect customers and staff alike and feel if they come that close to you their visors should be down. I dont think it would be fair to mention who exactly it was as I'm sure a gentle reminder would suffice.
G. C.
Went here on my family’s last night of holiday and I have to say it was the best decision ever. Wonderful staff headed by the lovely David, gorgeous food (I really recommend the Mac’N cheese) and a beautiful atmosphere. Can not recommend this place enough.
J. G.
Very helpful staff managed to fit 10 of us in for a great meal within half hour of booking
P. C.
Had a wonderful meal here for three people. Place was clean and welcoming and the staff were extremely friendly. The food, chosen from a large menu, could not be faulted.
B. D.
Good place to eat, though can be very busy at peak holiday times. Very good menu that has a wide selection for all palets. My kids love coming here and not just for the playground; they love the food and enjoy the atmosphere. Everyone is friendly and service is prompt and efficient. Just chose your table number, make your choice and order from the bar. You can keep your tab open for dessert or you can pay seperate if not sure how much room you will have left after the main course. Plenty of parking space and easy to access from the main road.
S. S.
Well worth a visit, staff and food excellent 👌
G. V.
Lovely settings and friendly staff, would have given more but the day I went they couldn't offer any fish dishes or steak so the menu was very limited
K. J.
Lovely feel. Very big and spacious. Lovely outdoor seating area. Friendly staff. Was a little busy so waiting time was long, but it's the weekend and great weather so that's to be expected. It was amazing. Really enjoyed the food.
M.
Friendly staff with a welcoming manor in a beautiful settings and building who served us fine ales and excellent food at affordable prices with a choice of two varied menues to suit taste and pocket.
Recommend their battered fish, french fries served with garden peas a lemon slice plus a some tasty tartar sauce... all under £5.00 it came hot and speedy... Bang on quantity and quality.
Oh, Their Chicken burger or Ham in Egg dish, did not disappoint the family ether... !
J. R.
What a fantastic roast! Amazing service, food & atmosphere. Would highly recommend trying this place out. Kids portions are super great value & the staff are friendly, warm & efficient.
S. L.
Good value
food and friendly staff.
Children's play equipment and lovely outside seating area.
D. L.
Food and staff excellent good quality food 🍲
B. H.
Banging roasts full of flavor will definitely return great value for money lovely staff
J. H.
Lovely pub and loverly food, really need a new menu, take note Green and King
L. B.
Very welcoming, we liked the fact that they accept well behaved dogs on leads, Children are also welcome.
Very reasonably priced a lot of choice for the meet eater or the veggies. We enjoyed our meal a lot.
H. D.
Absolutely fantastic experience, Marie was a lovely waitress and the food was amazing would definitely recommend and will definitely be going back. 5 star ⭐
M. R.
A lovely looking pub with stunning views. Well located near Newport and next to Robin Hill. We had a good time here but didn't have the wow factor. Waitress was pleasant and food timely but everything was just OK (not great or excellent).
There's a great big free car park and children's playground. The playground had some cones in one area due to part of the fence falling away. I'm sure this will be fixed soon.
K. M.
Nice friendly place to eat or have a drink. Nice seating area outside next to the kids play area. Not totally suitable for toddlers our 4yr old managed to get around climbing area to slide 2yr old found little difficult. Always looking for family-friendly places and would definately re visit
C. R.
Whilst visiting the island we drove past the Hare and Hounds several times and it looked inviting so decided to stop in for dinner.
Nicely decorated with a cosy feel.
Lots of choice on the menus - possibly too many options as was three diff menus to choose from.
Opted for the new set menu 3 courses. Unfortunately upon ordering we found that one item listed, which two of our party had opted for was not supposed to be on the menu as they don't stock it, and several other options had run out, and only two of the four listed desserts were available but we made our choices and waited for our starters. The service was very slow and it took about 30mins for our starters to arrive, however when they did they were very good. We then waited at least another 30 mins for our main to arrive, and when it did some of the accompaniments were not as listed on the menu, and again we were told either they had sold out or were not available, and the burger and steak were overcooked. Whilst the manager was very pleasant and apologetic, he however did not seem to be aware of many of the aspects of the set menu, and the service was so incredibly slow that it certainly would not encourage a return visit unless at a very quiet time. The table next to us also waited almost half an hour just for their desserts which required no cooking at all, needless to say we cancelled our desserts as we were not prepared to wait yet again.
It's a real shame as this place has lots of potential with a lovely atmosphere and good menu options but the service and lack of awareness really did let it down.
A. S.
Really frendliy place food was good if stretching them selfs a little to far but great with dogs they even have food and water bowls for the dog will deffently be going again
M. P.
Visited on a Sunday lunchtime before Christmas. There was both the Sunday menu with a variety of meals on offer and the value menu which offers a number of meals for around £5.
I had the hunters chicken which was served with chips and onion rings. Except rather disappointingly 'onion rings' turned out be just 2. Which I thought was a bit mean considering it wasn't a value meal at the cost of about £10.
Despite this small complaint the food was tasty and the wait for food was minimal.
G. T.
First time coming here, drove past on our way to black gang chine and decided we’d come back for dinner! The food was delicious! Steak perfectly cooked! Pudding also delicious!!! Friendly, helpful staff! Great atmosphere! Thank you very much
S. W.
Very slow to get served. Long wait for the meal. Small portions. Rather disappointing every time. It is not the staffs fault. It is the owner who is too tight to employ enough staff. They are run ragged trying to please.
We have been there 4 times in the past couple of years and the time before 2 of our party waited over an hour for their first course. We most definitely will not be going back there. Very dissatisfied. Check with the staff the waiting time before ordering.
s. b.
The service was good but the meal was dissappointing. My shoulder of lamb was cold and had more congealed fat on it than meat. I have never seen so much fat. We took the rest of the shoulder home for the dog who proceeded to throw it up later on.
C. S.
Lovely clean pub staff friendly food excellent went back a second day loved the garden too 😀 #welsh visitors
T. K.
Staff very friendly and efficient, food was amazing. Husband and I both had the 3 meat roast, very good. Definitely reccomend.
E. M.
Fantastic warm lovely staff so so helpful. The food was excellent. Will definitely be going here again 🙂
P. P.
As always lovely lovely place. Friendly and helpful staff fantastic good old pub grub and plenty of seating in and out. Includes child play area. Sham going to be closed again for the immediate future.
s. w.
Excellent setting, service and food. Staff were great with the kids and the pooch. Shout out to Ross for making it such a pleasant visit.
K. W.
Great pub, nicely decorated and good quality food which is very reasonably priced. The only downside is because its so good and cheap it gets really busy and wait time can be up to an hour. Tip: arrive early for quicker service
S. G.
Very nice clean pub with friendly helpful staff, looks like a new menu with a very good selection of food. We enjoyed our meal, and would recommend to give it a try, don't think you'll be disappointed.
G. W.
Food was good value for money. It was very busy but the service was still good. Would have been 5 stars but were sold out of a few things on the menu. Would definitely visit again.
D. H.
Lovely place to go. They're very welcoming and friendly. The food is delicious and arrives hot. 😋
A. W.
Really good, on holiday on IOW. Second visit to H& H this week. Enough said, rather not though see dogs in where people are eating, but that seems to be a 'thing' now.....
P. M.
The meals are nice but a little expensive for what you get
K. G.
Food was lovely but the waiting for it was to long and also a lot of food they had run out of we sat down at 4-30 and ordered our three meals straight away and we did not get it until 5-45 and that was after we had been and asked how long it would be . But like I say once we got the food it was lovely
D. M.
Super food, super service, fab family pub. Thumbs up from me 👍🏻
L. B.
Fantastic. Great venue, friendly and accommodating staff and steak and ale pie to die for.
A. G.
Food was good and a decent variety on the menu. One criticism would be that we were told that they were out of salmon and then watched a table nearby us being served salmon later that evening. Otherwise pretty good.
L. A.
Staff were really pleasant on arrival. Food came out looked lovely. But then.. my chicken was still pink and partners chips were really greasy.. told staff immediately came took plates away full of apologies. Food was replaced no question s asked and was delicious.. still apologising.. thank you
f. c.
We had a issue with our order going through and Tammy who was serving me was really helpful at getting it resolved. She got my daughter a snack and the rest of the staff were very pleasant and apologetic as well. Would definitely go back again
D. L.
Great country pub with great food and the staff and service are second to none.
M. C.
Absolutely brilliant food and the staff are so friendly and very welcoming. Highly recommended
J. J.
Lovely friendly service. Excellent food, we will definitely be returning
d. &. D. u.
My wife and I was on holiday on the island. Visited this pub for a lunch, good food and helpful staff.car park was difficult as I'm a wheelchair user. We will be going again though next time we visit the island.
A. B.
cant understand the negative reviews. I went there last night with my wife, daughter, son in law and my lovely melody( granddaughter) all of us enjoyed the very friendly staff we had a good relaxing meal with music in the back ground and a lovely little play area for melody and all the other kids enjoyed the freedom to play so did we. We found the staff there very friendly, we are locals and have been here before but have noticed a good atmosphere is building. I think if the right people are being employed then this adds to the want to come back feeling and we do.
T. H.
Just come back from having a wonderful meal. Nothing was to much for them.
S. D.
Great family friendly pub, good menu and food, excellent value lunch time menu. Friendly and helpful staff.
Outside seating and play area (Play area was closed on our visit)
In the summer would be great to sit outside and watch the world go by.
H.
It was ok.... never been here before yesterday but unless things change i wont personally be going back
Food wasnt that great i ordered the
chicken, mushroom and leak pie which on the menu says won awards 🤣 i can honestly say that theres no way the one i had would have gotten any award there was litterally no chicken in it and the mushrooms tasted like they hadnt been cooked at all
Such a shame as in a great spot and looks lovely
HOWEVER: the staff there were great helpfull and friendly
J. P.
Compare to The Sloop this place is exactly what a pub that serves grub should be. Food was fresh, reasonably priced and plentiful. Good service and atmosphere. Good lunchtime stop off. Meal thoroughly enjoyed.
J. L.
Lou & her staff are amazing! Right from the start of our visit, we were made welcome & covid19 safe. The food & beers were great. Worth more than one visit.
J. R.
I love the food there, really quaint little place with a brilliant menu. I loved the relaxed atmosphere, food was great and served in a timely manner.
M. M.
There is a lovely atmosphere at the Hare and Hounds which is a very Olde Worlde thatched pub. Unfortunately for me their menu is disappointing and a little bit pricey for what is quite basic pub grub. With some serious changes in the Kitchen it could be a good venue.
S. H.
Great service. Great food. Great prices. What more could you ask for. Well done guys and gals. It's a 10 from me.
J. L. (.
Food was okay but service was really slow, considering only about fifty percent of the tables were taken I would expect it to be a bit quicker.
L. B.
My friend and I had a salad from the menu with different accompaniments. However the menu stated what the salad would consist of for all options yet my friend only had lettuce, onion and a few pieces of tomato, whereas I also had radish and beetroot, and that wasn't everything listed! We complained but were told the salad depended on the main!!!! Not good enough.
C. P.
Tammy, Andrew and Sarah are always friendly and we have enjoyed many family celebration meals out at The Hare & Hounds recently. Our dog Cooper is also well looked after. Dog friendly pub so the whole family can be together.
P. H.
Great food, reasonable prices. Large comfortable place.
P. W. T.
Always been a great place to meet up, good food staff friendly. We used to go for the carvery every sunday, to save cooking. But they changed it to ordering at the bar.
R. D.
Had a fantastic roast (trio of meats) on Sunday. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back.
K. A.
Freindly staff sat outside for late lunch very good, sell Aspall's cider which usually indicates a good pub, plenty of parking, have used many times over the years has always been good.
D. F.
Great setting and a stone's throw from Robin Hill. Service not great but good food and a great kids menu. Also some great daily offers, steak was great for the price. But may be worth booking
P. W.
Appeared empty but was turning away customers? Kitchen seemed overloaded but no clue why also few drinks off tap. Staff friendly and happy to help. Food good when arrived.
J. C.
Great food with a lovely warm atmosphere and friendly staff.
Ross and Sue are an asset to their team
Will revisit again

S. B.
Absolutely fantastic pub. Food is gorgeous and staff are amazing especially saoirse. Had a brilliant time here and cant wait to go back would recommend it 100%
K. W.
Had a value meal. Didnt have what i ordered so went with chicken mash peas and gravy. Chicken was dry, mash looked like it was made with water and bery dry. Went for a sunae for pudding and it was lovely.
R. P.
Nice setting. Large pub with garden that is well kept.
Sunday roast average chain meal. Friendly staff.
D. C.
Lovely food and very friendly staff.
L. S.
It was fantastic, such a beautiful pub. Staff was lovely and so talkative and helping. The food was stunning and delicious, I would highly recommend anyone to go here for a meal as a couple or family.
P. M.
Looks lovely from.the outside and the garden is nice too. Inside though the furniture is very tired and some of it shabby. The service wasn't great but the food was good value with a good selection of beers etc.
M.
Nice food and lovely staff. Thanks to Tracey and Brooke
G. D.
First time coming here and the food was amazing, the staff friendly and couldnt do enough for you
C. M.
What a cracking pub and great food
D. B.
Lovely food and staff.
A. P.
Nice establishment that looks good and clean. Disappointed that the menu didn’t match online what there online version had so limited vegetarian options. However the roasted vegetables were excellent.
W. H.
Lovely looking pub. Great outdoor space. Great food.
W. M.
Great pub had a fantastic evening here. Food was lovely and staff couldn't do enough for you. Looking forward to returning. 😀😀
S. C.
Good quality food and very friendly staff.
Visited when it was very busy so had to wait an hour, not a problem as snacked on some peanuts. Food was definitely worth the wait!
T. C.
Great food good value for money pleasent staff nice childs play area 😀😀😀👍👍👍
D. C.
Although clean it needs a bit of tic to bring it up a bit. Long wait for meal after ordering and food not as menu description. Staff pleasant and friendly but not enough of them
R. E.
Friendly service. Good food
