The Pen and Wig is a well-respected bar in Newport, it serves excellent food, and has a great display of regular real ales together with guest beers. This house has a long history and was once the courthouse for Newport, and is a favourite with the members of CAMRA.

As always, the Pen and Wig never ever disappoints!! From great staff and an amazing atmosphere, to food that is generous on portions, tasty, well made and tastes like home cooked food.... but better!!! This place may be tucked away a little bit but it's never over crowded and really offers a good family/friends experience. You don't have to shout to be heard and there's even a function room if you want to hold your own little gathering! I can't recommend this lil' joint enough!! The food is amazing and the atmosphere is just perfect, plus the staff will always have a good chat with you!!

Try the Stout - star choice. Bar staff are really welcoming, but don't approach the barfly at the end of the bar.... he'll keep you talking about Arsenal all night without a single point to make. Stay safe x

You begin to look for the pig in the backyard as the gammon was that flavoursome and freshly cooked . Two eggs sat proud on top complimenting the smoky crisp gammon. Circling the plate a touch of Caribbean the juicy pineapple piece that is to gammon what Ant is to Dec a perfect match. Best chips in the Port , like your mother used to make , potatoes cut and cooked in hot fat . The Chef at the Pen and Wig has lifted the Bar when it comes to pub grub , a 5 star experience on a hot summers night ,plus the cold lager , pleasant ambience topped off by an Alsatian joining us at the nearby table as impeccably behaved as the winner of Crufts. Recommended.

Great pub to take in the big game. Fair pump prices, good food (I highly recommend the breakfasts!). There's a free function room available upstairs. Not really suitable for folk with wheelchairs as there's loads of steps. Rear beer 'garden' with plenty of seating at picnic tables. About 3 free parking spaces out back, usually taken by staff. WARNING: Rest of the rear car park has become NCP pay by phone/app only during the weekends (when I visited Aug '22).

Lunched yesterday with friends - return visit after approx 18 months although my friends are regular diners. Large menu so lots of choice from which I chose Hunters Chicken with Double cooked chips, peas, grilled tomatoes & fried onions priced at £11 99. My friends chose Fish, chips & Mushy Peas - normally £9 99 but part of the "2 for £14 99 offer". Food wasn't long in being served (no other diners) & only 2/3 people drinking at the bar. Some of the chips were undercooked & peas were almost cold. Far too much cheese on the chicken & virtually no bbq sauce. Unfortunately, my meal was soon cold as it was served on a cold plate. I didn't ask for it to be re-heated as I was hungry. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their fish but their chips were also undercooked & the Mushy Peas were cold. This is not the 1st venue I have been to that serves food on cold plates - it spoilt my lunch.

Ok, so the food is ok if you are willing to wait. Due to the other reviews I timed the food and it took 40minutes for 2 burgers. The standard of food is on par with a typical British pub. They do a few vegan options. The staff were friendly and were welcoming. They have good options especially if you like ale. I give them a solid 3, so probably 3.5 but I don't want to round up to a 4. I would recommend them but with a few caveats for the waiting and quality of food.

Pleasant town centre pub with good food and a range of real and keg beers. The kitchen is open so you can see the chef at work. Great chips and serves an all day breakfast. Cosmopolitan vibe indoors and a large outdoor seating area with TV. Parking close by (NCP) right behind in the evening. Really can't fault it when in Newport.

If you're after a more traditional place to visit, the Pen is spot on. The food is really good and with a wide variety of traditional ales, popular lagers and ciders to wash it down with, it's a pleasant all round experience. I hope they don't mind me saying the decor needs a little sprucing up, hence 3 stars but 4•5 for the food, the service and although they were very busy,my spotless table, which is reassuring in the midst of a pandemic. The beer garden is pretty good too!

It an OK pub with a good size outside smoking area. The food is bog standard and nothing special. The have good deals like 2 meals for £10 and a free pint with every burger. The is a good selection of house beers wines and spirits and a good choice of guest ales and ciders. The snack is on par with the rest of the selection. The staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. TV is on different sports channels a so quite varied. The have an upstairs event hall which is free to use for functions and parties. Overall nothing special and nothing bad either... A criticism would be to be more modern in style

Came across this great pub while visiting Newport a few years ago, everytime we visit we have to go there. This is a pub that welcomes you with great staff, fantastic food and beers. I used to really like this place. Then came the afternoon when they they didn't remove the beans and tomato from my all-day breakfast despite asking twice at the point of ordering (and having done so multiple times here in the past), and I became reluctant to go again after that. I started going again more recently, and now specifically order fish and chips, which are consistently good enough that I've no problem eating all of the rather large cod!

I have been a handful of times with out issue for drinks. This one time it took forever to arrive (over an hour) and it didn't look like the chef got much help with how many orders were coming through. They also forgot give us our order or perhaps took it to a different table so the food we were waiting on took even longer and when this was explained that we were waiting nearly 2 hours, the waitress serving seemed ignorant to this, and treated us like -we- were being difficult. Once the food arrived it was a good portion and delicious. Pity about the waitress and the stress put on kitchen staff.

It's a great city centre pub without being pretentious. Always good food and we'll kept good quality beers and ciders. If they got squeally pig cider I recommend you have a pint. Staff are great and always friendly. Good service here too.

A friend of mine recently had a going away party in the Pen and Wig. The party was in the large upstairs room. There is a good size dance floor surrounded by plenty of seating. There is also an upstairs bar so everything is in one location. I haven’t been here before (sorry!) but I’d have no hesitation in coming back. Staff are friendly and quick behind the bar so would definitely recommend.

Good, no nonsense pub serving a good selection of beers and decent food at very reasonable prices with excellent food offers everyday. Its not hrand, but it is clean and tidy, atmosphere is easy going and comfortable. Lots of tvs around showing sports but not obtrusive if you want to sit and chat. Staff are all friendly and service is generally prompt.

Disappointed with lack of places to eat in Newport until we found the Pen and Wig. Food was great. Had starters, main courses and bottle of wine for 33 pounds for two. Ambiance was warm and cozy with good easy to listen to music. Scotland had just beaten Wales at rugby but still everyone was very chilled. Wish we had found it last night. Happy days.

Good pub with fantastic food and ales. Upstairs is a great live/hire venue. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend hiring as the 4 times I've done it I've had problems every time. I've been here now for the 3rd time, gorging myself on the "Newport Destroyer". It just is a spectacular Burger!! Basically the only burger I know off, claiming to be spicy and actually being really spicy.... Besides being spicy, It really is delicious!! Spectacular! And this means even more since I am a German actually advertising English food!! ;-). Just kidding, or am I?, 😁 Keep it up & regards to the chef! There's only one little downturn: For me a burger is ment to be fingerfood. Means "grab it & take a bite". Sadly burger these days are getting taller and taller. And it's just impossible to "grab & bite" without creating a mess, even when using the provided "tools"! Why not make the burger wider in diameter instead of growing in height? Nevertheless, one of the best burger I ever had!

Favourite "traditional boozer" in Newport. Good selection of beers and ciders, friendly staff, and generally pretty good music when I go in (if you like Stone Sour, Shinedown and similar).. They have a theatre kitchen which always looks immaculate, although I've not eaten in here to this point. The clientele is generally a more mature crowd - which works well for me in a city where most people find the concept of going out without an Adidas logo about their person an alien concept.
