Super super cosy; absolute gem of a pub. Free darts playing and even has an outdoor seating area for smokers. Nice selection of beers and friendly staff, nicest pub we found in town.

I spent 2 weeks in Northampton on business and an English friend of mine recommended I check out the Malt Shovel. Originally from Montréal, now living in Los Angeles, I’ve traveled multiple times to England/UK. I really do fancy the traditional English pubs and their cask ales. Can’t say I was swept off my feet with the city of Northampton itself, but the Malt Shovel was definitely a hidden gem I’m very happy I discovered through recommendations. This is a typical English pub like we don’t see much anymore. The decor, the overall ambiance; it meets perfectly what we, foreigners, envision in our head of what English pubs are like. The lad behind the bar (Steve I reckon) was particularly personable, very welcoming, and shared tons of advocates information and stories. He truly made our nights, on repeated occasions, particularly enjoyable (I believe I went 3-4 times throughout my 2-week stay). He really went out of his way to make sure we were looked after and felt welcomed. Not knowing what the future hold, one thing is for sure, I will be back at the Malt Shovel if I happen to be back in Northampton! Ask Steve to serve you as cask ale with a “sprayer”, your life will never be the same! *wink*

You know you are in an old school pub when you walk in. If you like old carpets, dark wood, chubby holes, then, you have arrived. I love all of the above. And THEN you get the hospitality, the bar staff go above and beyond. Basically, they were top shelf. So, you want an afternoon of pleasantly, pop in here for a few hours. One of the few decent, proper pubs left. Great people, always conversation to be had and even better staff. Makes every other pub seem bland and without character. Drinks are properly stored and served, plenty to choose from and great knowledge of what they are serving.

Has been the best pub in Northampton for about 20 years. Heard it is changing hands soon. A tough act to follow. Hope it is not ruined by the new owners! My advice "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Lovely pub, in the Good Beer Guide. A good selection of ales and a selection of ciders too. ATM because of Covid rules, it's table service only and you must wear a mask at all times except when seated at your table. Even tho it's table service the staff are more than happy to explain the variants of the ale available, also more than happy to provide a taste sample. Half our party were ale drinkers, half cider and both agreed the pub had good choices. Highly recommended.

Cracking pub! Great beer, great staff, great atmosphere. There's an ever changing selection of real ales on handpump, a good range of other beers and a very good range of Belgian beers, including a couple on draught. Throw in some decent wines and an ever increasing collection of gins and there's something for everyone. They do food at lunchtime and have several themed nights throughout the year. There's also frequent live music and 6 Nations Rugby.

It's a traditional pub with a large range of beer and cider. They stock several real ales and rotate them so there are frequently different ones to try. Regular live music and it can be very busy. No parking so you'll have to walk, and that will save your licence.

Just popped in after a nostalgia walk around our home town of Northampton. After at least 30 years ago since we have been back. The pub was fairly busy but with a good atmosphere. A couple of pints of old hooky ale set me up nicely for my afternoon nap. 😉 recommended if you're in the area. 😁

It's not very often I go to Northampton......only to see my team Plymouth Argyle play. However, we got stuffed. Met a couple of Argyle fans who, like me, were trudging back to the city centre. We got talking about the unfairness of losing!! And we found this real ale pub so we decided to drown our sorrows......well a couple of pints anyway. Very good choice of real ales and they tasted even better with some dry roasted nuts. We sat outside in the beer garden and yapped......and it was all quite pleasant......next away match here we come .....it's still unfair though!!!

Having moved to Northampton from Sheffield I'm happy to say this pub is on par with the real ale pubs in Sheffield. Excellent choice of drink and very welcoming. Only down side is they have rugby on instead of football.

Cracking little pub with lots of real ales which suits my man down to the ground, lovely staff and lovely food but slightly let down by the miserable woman who brought the food over, miserable , rude and obviously hates her job, we asked where the cutlery was to which she replied quite abruptly over there they should av told you when you ordered...(I assume she meant the bar staff) to be fair I would get rid if I ran the place but otherwise a lovely place.
