Went for the food, stayed for the drinks & the business model. This is a great place to share a drink, big space and good service, you have to order & pay at the bar and they will bring the food to your table, we ordered a pizza and a couple of prepared drinks (don't remember the names), the pizza was okay, a little cold already when it was served to us, taste was okay and nothing more than that (but very good for pub's food in my opinion since this places are more for the drinks than the food) The drinks were very tasty and the service just excellent, they are polite and very fast preparing your drinks. When we got the pizza we were concerned that we didn't get napkins nor plates with it, then we realised that the straws in the drinks are made out of recyclable/biodegradable material and that if you ask, they will give you napkins, plates or whatever you ask for, but they don't leave them in the tables so you don't waste them, and I just loved that business model cause it helps a lot to reduce waste. I really recommend this place to share a drink

We visited for lunch on 1sf July with a baby and found the manager and staff to be really helpful and supportive. The manager helped us down the stairs and allowed us an easier exit route despite this being locked due to covid restrictions. The member of staff was also really helpful, she gave us table service and was really accommodating. Food was also really good and really quick. No complaints from us at all and will be visiting again.

We went couple of days ago and it was the first place we went after lockdown and it was better than I remembered it. They have couple of new vegan things on the menu which was very nice. I ordered the vegan pizza and it was amazing, the cheese wasn’t sticky the way most vegan cheese is. The staff made us feel very safe and they were very nice and polite. Would definitely recommend :)

Great friendly service, particularly from Will who brought our food over. Short wait time even though the place was quite busy. Above average for pub food on both variety and quality with plenty of veggie and vegan options, excellent value. Bit dimly lit if you're away from the windows and tvs showing sports are visible everywhere but not too over bearing if you don't want to watch it. Will be coming again!

Where do I start?!? The new chef is amazing! I'm a steak freak and he does it blue just how I like it and cooks everything perfect. All staff friendly and welcoming. Very good value for money. Mel being the bar is lovely. Kids love her as we all do. Gone from about a 4/10 to at least a 9/10. Highly recommended x

We ordered a pulled pork burger and chips meal each for £5. The burger was dripping with cold slaw juice, so the burger became cold and soggy very fast. Im sure if the slaw had been drained sufficiently, it would have been perfect. On ordering at the bar, it appeared to be very sticky like it had not been cleaned for awhile. The interior was great, sort of country comfy sort of place. Nice staff and friendly atmosphere.

I met with a group of friends here for a meeting. Normally the place is quiet full but that day it wasn't, I think because the only food they could serve was pizza as their kitchen wasn't working, except their pizza oven. Quite soon after I got there, however, they ran out of tomato sauce so... no pizzas either. The waitress was great and very friendly and the environment is very modern and relaxed. I get that the pizza incident was a one off (hopefully) but I feel like it could have been handled a bit better?

Visited The Optimist for breakfast (after a few drinks the night before). This pub has a great spacious well thought out interior with phone charging on every table. Morning staff very friendly, welcoming and polite. Had a small veggie breakfast which cost £3.99 which was ample, really good value and better than spoons! All in all a lovely pub! (Hophouse 13 on tap)

Amazing food, very family friendly and everything is kept clean all the time. it has a toilet accessible to the disabled, and the toilets are also very clean. The staff is very friendly! and your food gets delivered in no time. I had the southern fried chicken burger, and I highly recommend it! the chicken is so good and the chips are delicious and taste very fresh. One of the best pubs ever.

Lovely food and staff. Very child friendly, thoughtful and accommodating. Without even asking, we were given an extra plate and starter knifes and forks for our toddlers. Not many places actually do that. The manager was extremely friendly. Highly recommended.

The optimist is an incredibly welcoming and friendly place for us as a large family to get together weekly. We always manage to get a table large enough to cater for the sometimes 10+ of us (usually the largest table at the back of the venue, that can also double up as a private meeting space) we are often with children who are well catered for. The food is incredibly nice and served promptly by staff that are very polite. The decor and layout contributes to a relaxed atmosphere that isn’t too OTT like a lot of places but interesting enough with a nautical theme and amazing graffiti like paintings. The drinks on offer are incredibly varied with something to suit everyone whether you’re into your wines, real ales or enjoy a cheeky spirit. Overall as regular customers Every visit is a positive experience. Highly, highly recommend.

Great place to get a burger. Edit 2 weeks later. It was but they changed rules and now it's impossible to get a pint of Pepsi. Cant understand it as it would be acceptable if price is increased a bit but apparently the waitress does not take it as an answer. Very strange as in other pubs you can simply order a pint of soft drink.

Nice, spacious pub with very friendly staff, but I've never had to wait 50 minutes in a pub for food before, so that was a bad first impression, at least my gravy and chips were still bangin'! Also the chairs we were sat in were all worn and a few sharp screws were visible on the chair.

The £5 lunch menu is not available on the tables and I had to go to the bar and write down the different meals on my phone and relay them to my table. I understand that the football is going to be shown on a Saturday afternoon but I feel that the volume of the coverage was a bit excessive, people genuinely interested in the football would not need it to be that loud. Pizza on the lunch menu was very nice and was a substantial portion. The Pork Bap was served with a slightly burned brioche. The refurbishment has been successful in my opinion.

Went into The Optimist with a few friends last week to catch up as they just got back from uni. Got a few Punk Ipas down us and some food. We got the hot wing sharer plate which was so good, and really well priced for how many you get... good atmosphere in here and a pool table which is nice! Definitely coming back again!

Fantastic food, hot, delicious and reasonably priced. Great friendly bar staff and good selection of both drinks, meals and light bites. Place has a warm atmosphere, great for a quiet mid week catch up or a fantastic weekend night out with dj every Friday and Saturday night. We'll worth a visit.

The food was good here but the service was slow. The bar staff weren’t paying attention and didn’t even notice that I was waiting to be served, so I was stood like a lemon while they gossiped amongst themselves. Even though it was 8:30pm on a Friday night, the pub was full of kids who were crying and screaming which is always a massive annoyance to me. Based on my experiences, there are more adult-friendly pubs in the area with much better customer service standards, I doubt I’d choose to go here again.

The owner must be an optimist. They try to copy from Wetherspoon, however they that little bit behind. The food prices are slightly higher, yet the portions are smaller. The quality of food is just fair. Try harder guys. You need to give (more and better) in order to receive (customer satisfaction and cash).

I just love the food here and they do great deals. Wouldn't want to be in a place like this on a Fri or sat night though, but it's very quiet otherwise. I like the little booths they have. Staff excellent. Gents toilets awful. Mirrors ripped from the walls and a dispenser selling condoms, vibrating rings, and Anadin Extra, which always makes me smile

I come to the Optimist all the time for various occasions and the staff are always super friendly and up for a laugh no matter what time of day and that definitely makes you want to come back! Last Saturday (8th June) I came with some friends for a couple of casual drinks and food and unfortunately our food took quite a while to come out. As we were waiting, a server Kayleigh who was so apologetic and sorted it for us in about 30 seconds flat. Kayleigh was so friendly and funny all evening as she kept coming round to collect glasses etc. A real asset to the already lovely team of staff at the Optimist!
