Reviews of The Red Lion Bishopgate
P. Y.
A lovely delightful lunch we had on a weekend. The outdoor seats are all fully booked. We had a table in the conservatory area by the window which was a little warm. Service was prompt and attentive. We had the steak and battered haddock and chips. Both taste fantastic. Really love the food and would love to come back for another visit. Highly recommended.
S. D.
Lovely setting by the river, pleasant staff, quick service however we ordered fish, chips and mushy peas, peas were stone cold and the fish had a translucent bits that looked as though it was under cooked, huge chunky chips were lovely. Also ordered the crab burger, very tasty, lots of french fries, a bit of salad would have been good and it would have looked better presented. Lovely burger though.

Lovely pub. By the river. Ultra dog friendly (judging by my visit it’s probably obligatory to have a dog!!) . Friendly staff, nice beers, super atmosphere. Food looks good but I didn’t have any. I think this pub was closed for a while but it is a super spot now
B. Y.
From the moment I walked through the door I could tell immediately the experience would be a good one.
I was greeted by Elle who gave me a very warm welcome, professional and courteous, a sweet young lady indeed. She went the extra mile to accommodate giving me a great seat by the river just where I like to be the most.
Moving on to the food… wow, absolutely blown away! The portion size was definitely a belly filler. Flavours well balanced with succulent meat and perfectly cooked vegetables. If you are a Yorkshire pudding lover then you will love these ones. Even the mint sauce was home made. Presentation gave the impression of a well trained chef and after eating, I can assure you the chef talents shines throughout his food.
The establishment it’s self, is clean well decorated and has fantastic river side seating areas outside.
Lastly… the toilets, this matters a lot to me, I can confirm they are clean and well maintained.
Thank you to all the staff for your hospitality and for a great meal. Quite obviously a very well run pub.

We will definitely be back to try the food! The new Red Lion is lovely, fab decor, great coffee and friendly and attentive staff. We sat outside by the river, looking across to the historuc Lollards Pit overlooked by the site of the Ketts Rebellion camp, such history to enjoy with a coffee.
We had brunch today, it was fab! Smashed Avocado on sourdough with bacon and a poached egg was superb, perfect egg, quality bacon, my lady had the American style pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, they were so light and the bacon, again was great. Recommended

Have now been here a couple of times; previously in 2021 I like the Eton mess cheesecake, as the seeds on that are a great touch. Attentive but not pushy service. Clean toilets. Nice outside space all done up. New parking area v nice looking too.
Top tip from then was (and would still be) to book by phone, not internet, and request a "proper" table, as the one time we booked online, we were offered a high table on bar stools with no back (declined) or a low table on cafe chairs - which was fine but uncomfortable by the end, and only marginally more comfortable than a primary school parents evening.
I most recently visited April 2022, and the good things about this place from last year are still true now - good outside, good service, good access with the parking. Nice decor inside, and a good range of alcohol free beers for this visit, including an 0% Erdinger (but it's £4.20!)
My constructive criticism/ feedback would be to the to chef/ menu designer. There isn't much at all on this menu for somebody trying to eat healthier, and nothing for a light lunch. The menu is really missing a salad bowl, particularly as we head into sunnier weather. I ordered the Veggie Grazing Board and the seasonal greens to try to achieve a "build your own salad" but it wasn't the most successful.
My mother-in-law lives round the corner and would come in at lunch times if they did jacket potatoes. I do feel they are missing a trick by not having lighter options.
K. R.
The staff were so friendly and their timing amazing. The food was fresh and perfectly balanced in flavours and textures...❤🙏 Don't even get me started on their desserts....A Must if want fresh wholesome interesting food and the best service...
P. R.
Amazing pub with water views and great food. Large car park and lots of outdoor seating. Table service currently. Toilet lids falling on you are a problem in the ladies!
J.
I'd like to thank the Red Lion for what was probably the best roast dinner I've ever had in my life. I just thought it was going to be like every other roast in the city, but you've got a chef that isn't afraid to kick the quality up quite a bit.
It's absolutely incredible and, coupled with the excellent service that we received, makes the Red Lion somewhere I'd love to visit again and again.
Really top work all round , right ahead of summer it's great to see this once-loved and well-situated pub in the hands of team who want to see success.
C. L.
Initially not given the table booked but we were moved to correct table.
The roast dinners were nice but my beef was tough and grizzly. Very little flavour.
A pity no crackling with the pork, this is usually included.
Vegetables good although my broccoli stems were not fully cooked and hard. Unable to eat them.
Staff polite and good service although took a while waiting to pay.
A. S.
I was blown away by the food. We were 4 for lunch and their loaded chips, fried gnocchi and grazing boards😋 were fabulously tasty. On top of that we had fabulously mouthwatering desserts. Light. Not too sweet. Fresh. Strawberry pannacotta was the best.
C. O.
We had a perfectly cooked Sunday lunch there today. Asked for the beef as rare as possible and that's what we got. The waitress was lovely too. Nice setting in the conservatory and can't wait to sit outside by the river soon
C. W.
Came in for lunch as a first time visit and ordered the burger. Was a little gutted by having to pay an extra £1.50 for cheese but this was soon forgot about after some superb service by the barlady named Paige. Not very often you come across someone as polite as this lady. Credit to the business. Wish my staff were half as good as her, very well done to her.
J. M.
After a long time without visiting Norwich due to lockdowns, myself and two friends booked a table at the Red Lion for a brunch and few pints. Awesome food, so well cooked, beautiful produce (black pudding is wow!). Beer also great. Very friendly staff, and the recent renovation work has brought back to life one of Norwich's most scenic riverside pub to life. Well done. We also like the Unthank Arms - same owners.
C. W.
Firstly the staff are absolutely amazing, very attentive. Thank you.
On this occasion our visit for a Sunday Roast dinner was not so good, saying that the Sirloin was very tender. The Roast potatoes were hard in the middle, the Greens were raw, we do like aldente! Over loaded with Red Cabbage!
It was obvious it was not just our dinners, on the table beside us, they had said exactly the same thing!
S.
Lovely pub situated close to the river. Shame about the aloof barmaid. (dark hair)
S. J.
Lovely pub, cosy and inviting. The staff were welcoming, attentive and very helpful by asking chef to extend the food order period for us as we had arrived late. Our reunion group visiting Norwich for the weekend really enjoyed our Saturday night spent here. Excellent quality food but the charming staff are the real pub asset.
M. M. P.
The place is nice, they did a terrace on the back that has tables next to the river so it is very pleasant to have a drink there while you see people canoeing or on the paddle boards. That also rent paddle boards there. It is a very cozy terrace perfect for summer days
I. Y.
Three of us came here for the City of Ale Festival. There was a wide range of beers available and the ones we had were very pleasant. We sat outside, where the attractive view of the nearby Bishops Bridge and the slow moving Wensum running under it, framed by a blue sky and fluffy clouds, was a picture of tranquillity.
M. P.
Lovely atmosphere. Great outdoors space. Good selection of ales. Didn't try the food but it looked good. Great location.
C. T.
Great beer & drinks selection. Perfect location for a sunshine riverside pint.Proper good classy city pub vibe...Love it.
D. K.
Popped in for a quick drink before lunch.
If you want alcohol without food before 11 this is not the place for you. Other than their time issues it was lovely.
A. M.
We had a lovely family get-together meal at the Red Lion pub yesterday evening food was lovely atmosphere was spot on sat next to the river so relaxing and mostly the staff were lovely and very friendly and attentive thank you 😊
D. M.
Nice pub, good service. Sometimes it's hard to get the outside seating, but when you do its a lovely stop for a pint in the sun.
A. S.
Good choice of real ales and nice food. But shuts at 10, 9 on a Sunday? I guess that's the post Covid world for you, but I'm looking elsewhere next time!
Visited again the night of the ton John concert at Carrow Road. Place looked like a plague of Locusts had gone through it, used glasses piled up on the bar. The menus were very limited, possibly to cope with huge demand, so unfortunately we went elsewhere.
Visited again 11th August 2022.
The Red Lion has a very different vibe from The Trafford Arms, run by the same management. The Red Lion is a bustling Riverside pub, not the friendly local. 6 real ales on though, some from local breweries. Music in all bar areas, sometimes obtrusive (thumping drum and bass), making it very difficult to have a conversation. Yet again piles of used glasses stacked up on the bar. Not surprisingly they had run out of straight glasses because after the first beer our beer was served in thick dimpled mugs, didn't realise these were still in use. Very busy bar (which we were next to) as it is serving a huge amount of seating outside. They called last orders at 9:30, and there were still quite a lot of people drinking. When we left 10 mins later (which to be fair is when we had intended to), 4 people went in but were turned away! This is on a Thursday evening in the middle of August - the height of the tourist season - during a heat wave - what is going on?
D.
Just took a pee next to joe wilkinson in the bogs. He didn’t sing the happy birthday song while washing his hands.
Oh plus food was good and lots of beer choice
I. M.
Friendly, quiet local pub overlooking the river (at lunchtime anyway). Lovely staff and customers, nice food, good selection of beers. The bar tender was incredibly helpful when I was trying to get a taxi (big event on, busy day). I couldn't get one. One of the regulars was finishing his cup of tea and overheard, and gave me a lift 10 minutes out of his way home. I'm so grateful.
J. B.
Lovely staff - really knowledgeable and very accommodating. Plus they all seem to genuinely get on, which can truly make or break the atmosphere in a pub. The food was lovely and reasonably priced. Dog friendly!! Brilliant.
K. R.
Great to see this place refurbed and busy. Nice spot on the river for a drink
p. h.
Great location, right next to the river, in a surprisingly quiet spot too. Well in the afternoons anyway. If you get a chance try the steak and wine night, very tasty. Failing that just sit outside with a cold drink and watch the world pass by.
R. H.
Lovely atmosphere by the river sunny day helpful bar staff what more could you ask
J. W.
Under cover outside eating, paddle board and canoes for hire and a nice menu great service
G. R.
Drinks outside on a warm spring evening. Really good selection of ales and lagers. Clean. Great service. Really enjoyed going!
P. T.
Good service and open until 10pm, great location and choice of drinks
S. J.
Lovely setting esp on a sunny day to sit by the river with a few drinks. Staff friendly. Nice to get away from the city hustle.
D. D.
Came in on sat 23rd... met up with a friend.very busy as norwich football were at home.lovely pub..we sat outside. Service was fantastic. Until next time .thank you
C. “. W.
Lovely clean pub, with relaxed atmosphere, sunny beer garden by river. Excellent service from friendly staff.
D. B.
Quite a busy pub with good beer. Was doing a good trade in food. In a nice location.
R. S.
Nice pub by river, friendly staff and good selection of real ale and gin.
Food looked good.
K. P.
Very homey atmosphere, the cheesy chips are the best I've ever had. However, I ordered a veggie pizza and it's literally a puddle. My boyfriend tipped the plate and liquid literally poured off. Should've been served with a spoon! 😂 The server said its not oil, but it's water from the vegetables on top, which confirms to me that the vegetables are put on top of the pizza whilst they are still frozen. Not much of an issue, still tasted okay, but should be taken into account if ordering any of the pizzas with veggies on it.
A. S.
Amazing what they have done with the place. Good vibes and nice outdoor seating, shame there isn't a bit more as gets very busy.
J. M.
Great venue by the river watching the paddle boarders and canoers, and a great menu washed down with some lovely options
A. M.
Arrived for a booked table at 12 was given menue only to have them taking back bought another menu 12.30 waitress rude food didn't arrive till 1.15 wasn't that great .
O. S.
Nice to sit by the river near Bishopgate's Bridge on a hot summer's afternoon. Well run pub and restaurant.
J. S.
Lovely meal, very relaxing atmosphere. Would highly recommend
R. H.
Great location by the river, to eat and have a cold drink. Friendly service.
L. p.
Lovely pub by the river, serves food and a wide variety of beers and cocktails staff is very polite and friendly. Dogs are allowed.
M. B.
It's ok. Quite cramped, so if you like cosy it's great, but if you like space it's obviously not. I'm not a drinker, but they only had one cider available which was around £4.50, so not expensive not cheap. One male cubicle if that's relevant to you. Would be good for a quiet mid-week get together, not for peak days.
G. L.
A large pub by the river.
Lots of beers to choose from.
Comfortable seating inside and a nice garden for when the weather is better.
G. B.
Very nice breakfast by the river friendly staff
J. H.
Nice food but utterly terrible service. After being seated with menus and being told to wait for table service we waited half an hour before asking a waitress if we could have a drink order taken. They then asked us to pay for the drinks rather than taking our food order. Our meal was interrupted very quickly by a waiter asking us to pay our bill before we had more than a few bites. Very bizarre as they were only serving food to booked tables, so can't blame being unexpectedly busy.
A. C.
Had a nice vegan breakfast here today and oat milk latte. Alcoholic drinks here are a bit pricey. There's a big outside area too with heaters on some of the tables. Pub has recently been refurbished and is under new management.
L. R.
Fab location. Fab food. Great outdoor eating in the sun. River views. Staff friendly. Good service. Minor issues rectified immediately (a drink missed). All clean and tidy. Parking very handy. Looking forward to returning.
V. C.
The food was incredible (highly recommend the Chilli Bowl!), The customer service is excellent and the decor is on point! Not been before, will definitely go back!
J. B.
Great food, great location on the river.
B. C.
Good old school pub, only one slight issue, when the barmaid called last orders she could have said please.
C. J.
Next door to the place I had training in, busy and vibrant, good food and drinks, really nice place to be out in the sun.
S. H.
The cat was so lovely! Apparently they found it in the garden when it was a kitten and it was so lovely and asleep in the chair. I had a local pint of ale and the staff were really nice too! The cats name is madam shebee by the way 😁
J. R.
Lovely pub right by the river Wensum right by a very old and attractive bridge, pedestrian only though. Just had a drink, think there was about 4 real ales on offer and mine was spot on. Very nice outside area overlooking the river, whats not to like!
P. H.
A warm welcome as always from Elle and her staff, great beer and nice atmosphere
R. F.
I'm so grateful for the new owners and renovation. This lovely pub delivers on all fronts: lovely food with plenty of offerings for veggies, friendly staff (especially the cheery and attentive manager), great position, fab music and tasteful decor. The Sunday roast today was wonderful. Thank you Red Lion :)
P. B.
Nice pub with good selection of food and drinks, in a very pleasant setting by the river. The interior presents a nice clean modern setting. There are plenty of seating options both inside and out (by the river bank).
M. C.
Good food. Excellent staff. The location is great!
R. R.
Very busy for a late Friday afternoon meal (around 4:30), attentive staff, good selection of draught beers and the food was excellent. Maybe a little heavy on a pumpkin theme for food (can't knock them for that!), but the classics were still available and very good quality.
J. J.
Fabulous afternoon sitting outside by the river/bridge. Spontaneous decision to order food. Burger and superfood salad mains was the best I've had, ever, and I told the staff so, too. This pub holds a very special place in our hearts (first place we met) the building work improvements recently finished here are noticeable. Lovely.
T. D.
Friendly and attentive staff and a good selection of drinks. We did order food, unfortunately both duck orders had been overcooked but everything else was good, it was very busy though so we were probably just unlucky. It definitely didn't stop us enjoying our evening and we would go back.
H.
First time being here since it reopened, I'm so glad I came back.
Nell was looking after us on a table outside and they were absolutely amazing. We were made to feel completely at home with some incredible food and a brilliant selection of pints to choose from.
It's busy but well worth the wait (if you have one). It's a pub I pass frequently and I'm looking forward to stopping by again, and again, in the future.
R. N.
This place is absolutely remarkable the changes over the last few months after it’s new opening is outstanding. The young lady Elle has done an outstanding job managing this place, her professionalism shines throughout. Incredible food and staff.
H. G.
Great pub, love it, food is good too
M. H.
Bloody good food! Sunday roast was epic. Service was brilliant. Can't knock it. Look forward to coming back.
C. R.
Went there recently to meet some friends that arrived earlier in the day. Upon arrival, was shown to their table but as 6 were already seated, I asked for a chair. The waitress did bring one over and I sat there for around an hour. At this point, someone else arrived and joined our table. Someone then came over, irate, insisting that I left and that the law was that only 6 were allowed. I believe this is their own rule rather than government advice as we were seated outside so the rules had been relaxed. That said, I didn't want to argue and was only drinking cola anyway so no loss so I left. My other friend was never questioned or approached in spite of being perched rather than seated. I left. After the numbers had dwindled, I returned as live local. By this time, the other staff member had left and I enjoyed the rest of the evening and the food that was ordered. Its a shame about a certain staff member but assume she was just having a bad day
J. B.
Friendly pub, good service and lovely food
G. P.
Very exciting extensive menu with meals of different sizes. Extremely varied and original. If you'te lucky you might get an outside table overlooking the river with its medieval bridge but worth a visit for excellent food and a fine selection of craft ales.
L. F.
Food is very good.staff are excellent and the atmosphere is chilled
K. W.
I. Visited the Red lion today for the second time since the pub reopened, my friends and I were looking forward to a Sunday lunch. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with my roast beef or should I say un roast beef, my knife couldn’t cut the beef and the meal was less than hot. I asked to speak with the manager and the lovely Elle came to our table she listens to my disappointment and was more than helpful. Not only did Elle take on board what I said but did everything to make good our visit to the pub..Elle not only gave us a bottle of wine but also produced a beautiful platter of fresh olives and yummys . I would like to say as a local I would definitely go back to the Red Lion and be glad to use it as my local place to have a drink in a comfortable environment also will eat there again.
I. H.
It's great to see the Red Lion reopen. The location by the river is a real asset on sunny days and the work that's gone in to smarten the place up make the most of it.
The pub is in really good hands, it's now in the same group as the Unthank, William & Florence, Trafford Arms and Chambers Cocktail Company. So expect the food quality to be good and a decent wine list.
G. P.
Lovely staff, good pub food. Great atmosphere.
G. S.
Friendly, lively atmosphere with good food and great service
S. B.
Delicious food , friendly People, eating outside. Great
O. T.

R. C.
Interesting pub by the river, with a range of good real ales
S. J.
Very positive experience.
Great service, great local pub vibe, really great food at a fair price. I'll go back.
K. D.
Nice bar with a small conservatory and good outside space near the river. Good selection of beers, ales and spirits. Very good Covid measures and adherence. Very polite, friendly, efficient staff. Didn't try any food but it looked good.
J. G.
Only went in for drinks but its clear they've spent some good money on renovations. Lovely compared to how it was. Great selection of drinks and beer, and food looks very good. Will be returning for a meal very soon.
L. H.
Nice pub with a good choice of beers, wine, gins etc. Lots of outside seating for warm days or evenings overlooking the river Wensum and the Bishop's Bridge. Staff were nice and friendly.
Y. I.
Lovely pub down by the river. Great staff who were very attentive, accommodating and friendly. Great prices for a Riverside, city-centre pub and a lovely setting and establishment! Thanks Red Lion and we will be back! 👍🏼
C. G.
Nice place, in a great location right by the river. There is even a launch ramp for boats etc on the property. The food I has was good and the staff were friendly. There are picnic bench tables outside right by the river. Worth a visit.
R. F.
In an unexpected thunderstorm with hail the waitress went above and beyond getting soaked to come out, check we were ok, got us drinks several times. The service is always good and friendly but I can't believe many would be so cheerful and attentive whist getting pelted with heavy rain! Thank you.
S. W.
Lovely food. Great service. Staff very friendly. Enjoyed the real ale. Would definitely recommend it
O. B.
Under new management (thank the beer gods!)
New menu is a bit posher, I had a baked camembert and was stuffed.
On 2nd visit, sat outside with a group on a lovely sunny day by the river. It was busy but the table service was 100%. Working hard and friendly with it, so a great location, good food and brilliant service
S. E.
A lovely afternoon by the river with great food and great service.
L. S. L. P.
Great service..
Food...
Had a lovely evening ☺
L. H.
A lovely location and very efficient service. We had English breakfast for two which was delicious. I don't know if I look dodgy but I was asked to pay for the coffee and tea first and wasn't allowed to add them to our breakfast order which we also had to pay for as we ordered. All abit untrustworthy really, shame.
L. A.
Lovely pub, with great food and friendly staff. We are visiting Norwich with a view to moving here, and can see this becoming our local! Pretty walks along the river nearby too. Would heartily recommend a stop here!
D. F.
Been twice now and lovely meal each time. First time we went didn't get served for 20 minutes ,though they were very busy and apologies were forthcoming in the form of 20 o/o off meal . Wouldn't put us off going again .
D. F.
Amazing fish and chips.. service fantastic
Loved it 😍
J. R.
A favourite place to go for a drink by the river and just watch the world go by.

Very good, just reopened under new management. Friendly, slightly upmarket. New patio
M. M.
Always lovely to stop here for a pint and nibbles while out walking our dog
M. S.
A lovely lunchtime. Excellent service. Great food. Interesting menu with food presented cleverly. The dog in our party was welcomed and well looked after.
R. G.
Lovely staff, burgers were tasty, however the ploughman's lunch was a little disappointing compared to a traditional ploughman's. COVID secure and ample pleasant outdoor seating overlooking the river.
s. n.
Great historic location next to the river, good grown, lovely views.
C. H.
Not bad. Bit of a wait but lovely
D. H.
Good food in a great location and dog friendly too!
M. F.
I love this place. Smack bang next to the river with plenty of outdoor and indoor space. Great selection of food and drink! Service is excellent too. Highly recommended.

Myself and husband David love this place. The food is great. The venue lovely. As for the staff...... they are professional but not stuffy - enjoy having a chat - look out for Claire lovely girl 😀
V. V.
Wow, so pleased that this place reopened because such an ideal spot next to the river. Brilliant service, amazing menu, only tried 2 so will be back to try others. Thank you
P. J.
Lovely setting excellent service. Could do with steak knives for some dishes. Puddings really tasty. Gone up in price but it is worth it for the service
G. B.
The food here is so much better than it has any right to be. The place looks like your standard local pub but seriously, give the food a try! If an item on the menu can be homemade then it is. Pizzas are excellent, pie is superb and the burgers may be the meatiest I've ever had. If you just fancy a drink this is a lovely spot by the river with good local ales.
A. A.
Great place to drink by the river.
M. J.
Good pub, good food and good beer
J. S.
Excellent, food was good, staff very friendly, can't fault it
M. L.
Good beers and friendly service.. Very clean and tidy right by the river side but shaded and calm.. The menu looks good too..
C. S.
Excellent food good beer's good atmosphere and friendly staff
M. G.
Very cosy pub , local clientele amiable enough . Food ticked the box .
T.
Had a fab Sunday lunch, fantastic service and very dog friendly. Thank u xx
D. C.
Nice make over, terrible loud background music... and not very good beer! maybe I went on an off day? but Im guessing the music is there to stay so I wont be trying it again unless warm enough to sit out.
K. A.
Friendly atmosphere and lovely food.
D. P.
Great service at table. Brilliant location on the river. I saw the staff cleaning every table thoroughly. Worth a try.
J. C.
A honest little pub right next to the river with a homemade roast on a Sunday which reminds me of how your parents might make it.
Friendly staff and a good selection of beers round off a perfectly pleasant place to have a bite to eat with friends.
Don't be caught out by the carpark - staff are happy to show you how to enter your details so you can avoid any trouble.
B. T.
A good pub. It was quiet when I went in but it was early. Friendly staff and a good place for a natter.
M. L.
Slow service on the occasion we were there. As is the case with most outdoor pub seating, adjacent smokers are a turn off. Left early as a result
N. W.
Good choice of beers, good food, satisfactory service
E. h.
The beer was lovely, the staff pleasant. The updates on the interior are outstanding and it's always pleasant to sit by the river
P. H.
Great refurbished pub, great location, great staff, though could do with more. Food, great. But potions a bit tight. Good selection of local gins too.
m. c.
Nice pub beside River. Only had drinks but food being served looked good.
P. H.
Good place to visit to have a quiet drink at the Riverside.
Good knowledgeable staff, who are happy to discuss the products on offer and allow you to sample before you buy 🍺🍺🍺
C. M.
Great pub by the river, excellent choice of beers and wine with knowledgeable staff. Definitely worth a return visit when in Norwich
L. L.
Cosy atmosphere, not too busy and a good range of drinks! Perfect for a chilled out night in :)
J. S.
Really great food. The Sunday roast was one of the best I've ever had. Really well balanced and tasty.
P. H.
Went on the very last day for the previous tenants who were going to be missed. Hence no keg beer and roasts only. Good feel to the place though and very light and airy. Best wishes to whoever takes it on.
D. H.
Had the Sunday carvery and it was delicious, the service was quick and friendly. The food was well cooked and there was just the right amount, enough to fill you up without adfing to the obesity epidemic. Really good value, especially when you factor in the kids eat free.
S. H.
Came here for Father’s Day and everything was lovely! The food and and service were on point. Super impressed with how much effort and work they have put in since reopening
V. S.
The location is gorgeous, right beside the river and on a day as nice as today it was perfect. The staff were friendly and helpful however I felt the carvery was over priced at £8.95 for what we got. Paprika in the gravy, not enough potatoes and the meat was not high quality, combined it made for a poor eating experience. I won't be recommending it in future.
T. T. T.
Nice drinks, friendly staff and overall great atmosphere.
Quick service, outdoor seating; picnic tables and parasols.
e. p.
Beautiful spot for lunch by the river
J. R.
The pizza was absolutely fantastic. Chunky cheese chips are wonderful. Beers not cheap.
R. B.
Lovely staff and a lovely Riverside garden.
N. H.
Nice food and friendly service
G. B.
The pizzas here are amazing. Thin crispy and way bigger than the plate. Good choice of different pizzas with top notch toppings.
On Tuesday and Thursday if you buy 2 pizzas you get a free bottle of wine. We took to bottle home with us as we had beer with dinner. When the sun in shining you can sit and eat outside by the river.
The chips here are big, I mean really big. 😆
Thank you Red Lion
R. B.
Friendly, historic, and dog friendly Norwich pub in an idyllic setting. Have visited several times with friends and the wife & dog for drinks, and it's always a pleasure. Fair selection of beers. Nice cost bet garden with a view over the river. It is also right next to the 'pub & paddle' hub. It's just over the road from Lolards Pitt too, if you want to do a mini crawl, and a short pleasant walk from the cathedral. Highly recommend ed.
R. T.
A proper pub. Friendly service, plenty of choice of drinks, lots of space to sit and chat, and pretty good carveries on a Sunday. It's also a lovely spot for a drink in warmer weather, with its outdoor seating allowing nice views of the River Wensum.
r. w.
Lovely pub in a very pleasant setting. Great service. Food was delicious. Will be back…..a lot
M. W.
Beer was good and well kept. Food took a while to arrive and chicken was overcooked and very dry. Friends pizza was not as ordered . We were hungry so couldn't be bothered to return food. When friend pointed out at end of the meal the pizza was served different to request, got a confusing response as to why it had to be done incorrectly to what was originally ordered, as would have been to dry. This, despite order being taken, then served differently, and friend having previously received the correct requested pizza when ordered on another occasion! Very odd...
J. G.
Went on the spur of the moment as we were walking past one Thursday evening. Happened to be their 'Pizza night' with special deal of free bottle of wine so quite busy but still plenty of room. Initially sat outside overlooking the river but moved into the conservatory when the midges started to bite. Waited about 50 minutes for our food but the waiter explained that it was all hand prepared from fresh which certainly appeared to be the case when it arrived. We had an authentic, thin-crisp pizza and a chilli burger with chips. The food was excellent and worth the wait. We just wished we'd been warned about the likely delay when ordering. Friendly staff. Decor a bit tired. Doors to lavatories could have done with a door closer to avoid the constant banging. Midges out of their control!
I. C.
I love this pub! Lovely decor, friendly staff, stunning locale and nice Menu!
r. s.
A superb lunch at the Red Lion on Sep 17th! Perfect riverside setting, prompt and friendly service, excellent food! Impressed!
A. H.
Nice old pub on the river in the middle of Norwich. Close to mooring for boats.
Good choice of ales and lagers.
Food was OK, we all had sandwiches which were a bit basic side on sliced supermarket bread with a bit of salad. Filled a hole but for the money would have expected more.
R. L.
Lovely location. Currently, you probably need to book a table.
Nice beer, good service.
A. R.
Enjoted our visit here. Good service and friendly.
j. r.
Having recently moved to Norwich, my partner and I have been exploring the city on foot and checking out the city's pubs. After a second visit, the red lion has become a firm favourite for a quiet pint with friends in the sunshine. Located on the western edge of the Norwich Cathedral Quarter, we found a friendly atmosphere and enough seating both inside and out. We took great delight in watching the world go by on the river, canoeists and day-trippers as well as the wildlife. Right next to the riverside garden is Bishop Bridge the bridge was built in 1340, and is still in use, making it one of the oldest active bridges in England. Great friendly little pub, I would recommend a visit!
C. M.
We're always warmly welcomed by the staff at this traditional riverside pub and the locals are extremely friendly too. The pizzas looked so good last night while we were having a pre-dinner drink, that barman Glen very kindly booked us a table for tonight so we can try them for ourselves. Also, the beers and wines are very well chosen which is why The Red Lion is our "go to" pub whenever we're in Norwich.
I. J.
Brilliant pub. Great choice of beers, really nice food and staff lovely. Excellent
C. M.
Ypu will find excellent beers and wines as well as a lovely pub grub menu at this pretty pub set alongside the River Wensum. You will always receive a warm welcome from Amanda, Glenn, Wren and the rest of the team. The locals are very friendly too!
G. F.
Was told it was an ok pub but was pleasantly surprised when we got there. Slight wait for food but oh my god! Worth the wait. Red Lion Burger is the best burger i’ve eaten and i’m not even exaggerating. Quality of ingredients was evident in every bite. Nice selection of beverages and enjoyed the atmosphere. I don’t give star a pub lightly. Well done guys keep up the good work!
J. W.
Tasty food, excellent beer and a wonderful staff. This is a top Norwich pub next to the river.
J. A.
Very friendly landlord, decently priced drinks and excellent pub food. Lovely location, especially in the summer as its right on the river so the outside seating area is perfect.
L. J. F.
Really nice pub, quiet but not dead, great able service and good beers and food.
R. W.
It's a nice pub in a nice location. I haven't had problems here myself but I've noticed the bar man gets a bit flustered when he is busy and is quite rude to people. Most people understand when a bar is busy that it might take a little longer to get served.
J. S.
Very nice would definitely go back
J. A.
Very cosy pub situated right by the River Wensum not too far from the cathedral. Good selection of ales at decent prices and I also had a very tasty steak and kidney pudding while I was here. It was my first time in Norwich, but would definitely come here again when I come back to the city. Just a very friendly, cosy, good old-fashioned boozer.
J.
Good classic pub food with a friendly atmosphere. The service could have been a little quicker, but the food and the location are great.
If you have a tastecard take note that these aren't valid at weekends, though the tastecard app doesn't detail this.
F. F.
The food was great. They do some very interesting food, as well as the classics.
N. T.
Really nice pub and super friendly and flexible staff and management. Will be returning and recommend.
K. F.
Excellent food and service. They were very busy (sunny saturday) but nothing was too much trouble.
J. B.
Didn't go in, only spent time in the calm outside area by the river/car park. Polite bartender and fresh beer
M. G.
Great location for lunch. Unhurried, decent food and friendly staff
K. P.
Love this pub. Great location on the river, albeit close to a hostel so you can get some interesting visitors outside. Great staff and good beer selection
J. A.
Brilliant no messing about pub. Friendly staff. Dog friendly. Good food. Lots of good beer and ales. Close to river with lots of space.
S. L.
Great beer and friendly staff. Lovely sitting by the river.
P. S.
A nice pub in nice surroundings and only a 2 minute walk over the bridge from the yacht station. Have been here many times before while on boating holidays on the Norfolk Broads. Only stopped for an hour this time because of the prices. Four pints of beer came to £14 (between 4 of us) and 3 small portions of cheesy chips was £9. A real shame about the expensive prices as it is a nice pub.
J. C.
Lovely food, lovely staff. Garden looks like it will be a great little spot in the sunshine
I. B.
Excellent food and service but most importantly also great wine list
S. P.
Lovely beers and great choice of food glad to see this place back open
N. D.
Always a good ale available here and a very decent Steak deal on a Weds ND Friday. Riverside setting helps greatly but it's biggest asset (as far as I'm concerned) is its a "proper" pub and not those souless overpriced shite lager bars that have taken over Morwich Ciry center (mugs a pleanty) that serves good quality ales not to mention a good carvery on a Sunday....in fact I'm sat here now after a long hot day working in a bathroom ☺
P,S. Not to mention my two savage ride terriers are very welcome after our regular walks around the river Wensum which means Im here rather to often !
A. T.
Great service throughout and good quality food in an attractive riverside setting.
P. S.
Great food and friendly staff. We booked paddle boarding and had lunch afterwards.

S.
Lovely environment with funny and friendly staff. The food is some of the best pub food I've and in a long time and the chunky cheesey chips are hands down the best I've ever had.
