Reviews of Kean's Head

Absolutely love this place. Amazing selection of craft beer and ale. Since the last time I went, they've started serving Indian Street Food. Didn't try any, but it smelt lush!
E. B.
Cosy little pub - a bit of a hidden gem. A great place to try a range of craft beers (including a good selection of no/low alcohol options). Has got a particularly good range of whisky on offer, from around the world...alongside side a wide range of other spirits, if that suits your tastes.
My partner and I quite often visit for a half pint, accompanied by a whisky chaser. A nice way to try things we haven't had before.
Also conveniently located for a quick one, before or after the ice hockey.
S. G.
Superb craft lineup featuring local and international beers. Great range of pale, IPA, mixed fermentation and unusual beers.
We had amazing food here too from Paajis - not sure if they're always here but it was some of the best street food we've ever had.
If I wasn't on the way out of Nottingham when we visited, I'd have easily spent all day working through the board!
J. D.
Always a pleasure to visit the Kean's Head. It's easy to get to but just out of the way enough to make it busy but not packed, even on a Saturday afternoon. There's always a proper selection of beers and ciders on and even though we've never tried it, the food looks really good. If you're up that way and fancy a great pint and a chat with friends, this is the place to do it.
K. D.
One of the finest selection of craft beers and now Indian food ... Can't really ask for more .
D. S.
A great stop off and firm favourite for a well deserved drink on the way home from the cricket ground this is a good, traditional feeling pub.
A large eclectic selection of real ales and ciders all of which suggest a very well kept cellar. The Keans Head has cosy, welcoming feel to it and a marvellous smell of Indian food which is prepared and served on the premises.
Friendly staff and locals make it a pub to enjoy and return to on future visits.
S. K.
Bit of gem in a 'back alley' in Nottingham City Centre. Castle rock pub with an extensive ale selection and curry on offer. You come here for good beer.
P. D.
Nice staff, delicious food that arrived very quickly even at a busy time, and a great selection of cask, keg and can beers. Put a great finish to our day out, the place does Nottingham proud.
S. G.
Enjoyed the ale, the whiskey and the food. A gem of a place with a great atmosphere without being over bearing. Highly recommended a visit here.
K. W.
Excellent little Castle Rock Pub just a few yards from Lace Market Tram Stop. Friendly staff, well kept beers and home made curries.
B. S.
Excellent little pub in the City's historic lace market. Good choice of brews, friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere.

Lovely traditional pub with a fine range of cask ales and craft beers. Will definitely return!
M. T.
Great pub, great beers, lovely ambiance, glad we can meet up here regularly. Xxx
C. C.
Just love any Castlerock pub and this one does not disappoint. Even better you get beer and curry in the same place!
Having lived in the Middle East for a number of years, I’ve been totally spoilt eating proper Indian food. Paaji’s is on par, offering a lovely selection of tasty traditional food. Their Daal Makni is outstanding, best I’ve had in the UK. I highly recommend this offer.
K. P. R.
4 for building /atmosphere.
3 for the beers.
Haven't been here since before Covid, but both the draught and bottle selection seemed lacking.
S. W.
Relaxed and unspoilt. Excellent beers and an amazing selection of whiskies. Food is served.
o. w.
A fantastic array of beers, tucked away down a side street in Lace Market. Well worth the search...
A. B.
Great small pub, always really friendly service and fab food

Castle rocks Keans Head.
Small and lively pub set in the heart of the Old lace Market. As a younger man I used to work just around the corner on Broadway but it seems my workplace had changed into a nightclub but closed down. Keans Head is a great place to start your real ale trail of Nottingham and has 8 real ales along with ciders and cask. Well worth a visit. Camra card welcomed.
B. P.
Street food very good & spicy.
Beer & wine always excellent.
H.
The Keans Head is an institution in the Lace Market. It's a small one roomed pub I the shadow of the magnificent St Mary's Church. The selection of real ale, craft beer and proper cider is ace, and they have some interesting alcohol free beers too. Well worth popping in if you are in the city centre.
K. M.
Small, intimate city centre pub with very good range of beers, especially real ales. Located in the attractive Lace Market area opposite St. Mary's church.
T. C.
Great little pub, many good beers both local and international.
A. H.
Excellent range of beer, both keg and cask, local and from further afield. The Indian food that Paajis is serving out of the kitchen is both excellent and affordable. Staff always friendly and welcoming. Don't expect a seat if you go at peak times!
D. S.
Had the Vindaloo, the meat just melted in your mouth. Only gave five stars because theres no more to give. Excellent.
E. “. e. n. G.
Food was delicious and great range of beers. Staff were nice and a good atmosphere
P. M.
Dave and the team are great and the pub prides itself on being friendly to everyone. Great beer, excellent South Indian food from the Paaji kitchen. Wish I could go there every week....
A. H.
Great pub with a good selection of ales
C. M.
Love this pub, nice staff and a lovely atmosphere good choice of beers for my real ale loving husband
P. R.
Great Castle Rock pub in an historic Nottingham location. Fantastic drink selection and the Indian street food ( Paajis) was tasty and excellent value. Friendly team and would recommend a visit.
M. W.
Lovely little boozer really friendly great smell of curry from the kitchen
S. G.
One of the best beer spots in Notts! Really casual with a fab range of can and keg. Street food on offer was also great.
B. K.
Excellent beer and whisky selection, definitely one pub in Nottingham not to miss. Always some very interesting beers and ciders, normally something for everyone. Also a huge selection of more unusual whiskeys and gins too, simple a huge selection. The food menu is also pretty good.
M. S.
Lovely little pub. Great selection of beers and pleasent stuff.
C. C.
Very good selection of beers and ciders. Nice toilets. Food menu looked good. Street food.
L. C.
Lovely pub atmosphere, Castle Rock beers and a large interesting whisky collection.
A. F.
Only went in for a drink, nice friendly atmosphere good variety of drinks and although we didn't eat the food looked & smelled amazing.
H. L.
Lovely place for a pint of Guinness if you asked me the Guinness come straight from the ground here , that real earth taste like something might have lived there
A. P.
Popped in for a quick drink en route to a meal out with friends. It was early on a (Thursday) quiz night and the place was buzzing. One look at the superb selection of beers on offer showed why... Good pub, great ambience and atmosphere, good beer, well located in the Lace Market area so convenient for the Station and tram links to all the City's attractions - all in all a great place to drop in...
N. S.
A great pub tucked away a few minutes walk from the city centre. Excellent beers and great range to try at good prices. Small and cozy but well worth the time to walk and enjoy the beers on offer. Has toilets. Very friendly staff. Part of the local castle rock brewery chain in Nottingham.
N. W.
Great cask and keg beer as usual.
D.
Wowser! AmaIng beers and onion bhaji's
W. T.
Only been in this pub a few times ,but its really nice ,and now they have food on too
T. S.
This is my favourite real beer pub in Nottingham. Loads of real ales and gins. Castle Rock harvest pale is nearly always on tap. The pub is not very big and I can remember going in when it’s was a cafe. Great place and welcoming staff.
A. G.
Great ales and a fantastic Whisky selection
A. R.
I've always loved this one room pub and spent many happy lunch times here when I worked around the corner in the late 90s. Now in the Castle Rock stable, it goes from strength to strength. Lovely atmosphere, good beer - and no loud music!
T. P. S. T.
This is a castle rock pub but it serves a good range of different alcohol. The pub is small and it is usually packed. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They are able to give great advice on what beers you might like and they easily provide information on each beer (even going as far as to mention other similar ones you might see around town)
A. R.
Always an excellent venue for superb beer and good conversation. The staff are always knowledgeable and I can rely on a good recommendation on what to drink. Whenever we have a trip to Nottingham, the Kean's Head is always on the list of places to visit. Oh, the pork pies are always a good shout.🍺
g. a.
Great choice off beers plus vegan beer, yet to try food but smells amazing
D. G.
Great pub with an awesome beer selection. The place is a real boon if you like something other than Foster's.
Mad props for the selection of Trappist beers. If you are into such fine wares then you are spoilt for choice.
Only thing that lets it down is the non closing front doors. Need a bit of WD-40!
Edited review to five stars due to owner response (which was awesome)
B. E.
Hidden away in the back streets it has a local feel to it, however it's worth the effort to visit.
It's Castle Rock so that means freedom to serve a huge range of different beers. Cask, keg, continental bottles and craft cans are all available.
We didn't eat but the food looked excellent.
N. T.
Constantly praising Castle Rock joints would get tiresome if they weren't just so bloody great.
This venue is tucked away in the Lace Market in the shadow of St Mary's, serving a pretty diverse range of cask and craft. Beware the occasional pint of craft beer that comes in at over a fiver. It's all very nice except the price!
With a modestly sized bar area, it's often busy, and it's not unknown for the St Mary's choir to be filling up the space after a service (and, rumour has it, usually before as well).
Staff are Castle Rock vintage and thus thoroughly personable as well as knowing their IPA from their elbow, which isn't always the case in a popular venue just down the hill. No real outside seating to speak of except a couple of tables just outside the door.
If you catch this place when it's quiet it's a lovely little haven in the Lace Market and when it's buzzing you know you're in for a good time.
For a bonus point, who was Kean and why did he part company with his head...?
S. J.
Great selection of beers probably the largest choice in the city of Nottingham, food available too
M. R.
We have often passed by this hidden away gem whilst exploring Nottingham's Lace Market area, it is well worth a visit for a variety of reasons..
The food, and for me in particular the Homemade Pie (in this case Chicken, Cider and Mushroom in a herby sauce) which was the BEST I have yet had.
The beer, it is a Castle Rock pub stocking a good range of ales plus their award-winning Harvest Pale.
The atmosphere and staff are just great, because the pub is close to the City Centre but hidden away on a side street you get a genuine traditional pub experience.
When at the bar you cannot fail to notice their large range of whiskies (somewhere in the region of 40?) which I did not have the time to sample on this occasion BUT I WILL RETURN.
M
PART TWO; Indeed I have returned and the food is as good as it was for my previous visit, had the Reindeer sausage and mash (sorry Rudolph!) and was perfect. Service and choice of ales excellent. M
J. W.
Excellent pub food, the battered black pudding and Stilton dip was sensational and I loved the pork pie to. I would visit this place more regularly if it wasn't absolutely freezing every time I go in! Its not so bad when its full of people but over lunch it particularly cold. It doesn't help that the door is a bit stiff so people accidentally leave it open when leaving.
L. S.
Not visited for a couple of years but we'll worth it loved the food and great beers
W. G.
Boasting a drinks' selection that mocks its small venue, the Kean's is a total joy. The bar staff are and have always been friendly and helpful, ready to guide you on your liquid journey. I'm not saying it's the best pub in Nottingham, but it's definitely in the top one.
A. M.
Amazing Amazing food and service 😍 found a hidden gem
E.
Great selection of beers and great curry
A. W.
Excellent small pub. Well worth a visit. Great beers and good food.
E. Y.
Lovely place but we don't want to encourage too too many! We had lovely gin and basil tonic! Highly recommend!! 😊 Oh yes, good level access and accessible toilet (untried). Can be very crowded at busy times.
J. P.
Excellent beer & spirits selection and some tasty homely food. Guest beers change regularly making it a great starting point for an evening out.
Gets pretty crowded on a weekend and can be a bit of a challenge to get to the bar.
S. Z.
We found this pub by chance in our day visit to Nottingham and were surprised by the amount of options of beers available. We met the manager who was incredibly nice and had a lot of knowledge about the beers and suggested some fruity options which were amazing. I definitely recommend visiting this pub in your visit to Nottingham!
L. A.
Great pub with a fantastic craft beer selection
M. S.

Friendly pub with a great selection of hand pumped beer.
S. L.
Cozy little pub in the city centre. Great beer selection in cask, keg and bottle. Lovely atmosphere and the food is pretty good too. The deep fried black pudding is a delight!
H. W.
Had a wonderful Christmas work night out! The staff really looked after us, the food and atmosphere was amazing and I can highly recommend it. Superb. Thanks so much guys! The Prosecco was much appreciated!
C. H.
Great range of drinks
L. L. L.
Had a few real ales on this visit and lunch. Wow, what can I say. Fish finger sandwich was huge but was delicious. Always go here for drinks more than food. One of my top pubs in Nottingham for real ale.
G. F.
Simple and satisfying pub experience. Great beer and food was good value nosh. Been there for the first time in a while and it was lovely, friendly and welcoming
Would recommend for people before and after visits to the excellent St. Mary's church next door.
P. B.
Really like this place. They have some well-kept real ales plus loads of famous foreign bottled stuff. My fave pub within the city itself. Food is proper and unpretentious.
P. L.
A Castle Rock venue with good beer selection especially if you delve into the craft and can selection. Slightly off the beaten track near St Mary's and the Galleries of Justice and can feel full. But worth it.
M. A.
One of best bottled beer selections in the city. Great range on the taps too. And with great food and friendly and knowledgeable staff, you’re on to a winner.
M. F.
Excellent ranges of cask, keg, bottles from far and wide in an updated traditional setting. Helpful friendly staff.
Did I mention the whisky and gin?
I should have pointed out... whisky and gin.
D. C.
Great selection of beers. Relaxed atmosphere. Great food that is freshly cooked. Castle Rock Brewery pub. It has a high standard and reasonably priced.
R. S.
Interesting ales from around the globe, my first was off but excusable seeing they have so many. Food was disappointing, chef had a chronic cough all the way through prep that could be heard right the way through the pub, barman was to busy on his laptop to be of much help. Top marks for the idea just could be executed better.
R. K.
One of my favourite and regular pubs in Nottingham city centre. Always an excellent selection of beers. Can be quite busy at times. Recommended
S. T.
Fantastic good traditional pub that serves a good range of proper beers & gin. The best feature was the wide range of gluten free beers, which weren't exhorbunt prices
J. C.
Castle Rock pubs serve the best beers. BUT why the big TV screen in your face showing all bottle beers, cans, ciders etc. Very distracting and not an asset at all to the atmosphere!
K. H.
Great range of ales and craft beer. Good selection of cider, wines and spirits. Friendly helpful staff and nice chilled out atmosphere.
S. M.
Excellent selection of beers as well as gins and whiskies. Craft and keg so all tastes are catered for. One of my 'go to ' places for pre-gig drinks when in Nottingham.
S. C.
Cute authentic old man pub! Great beer selection but beer is served warm. Easy and no fuss kind of place, busy most evenings.
P. M.
Atmosphere was quiet but the beer was good. A real rock music background. This is a small pub that can make a lot of noise. Huge selection of craft and real ales
R. C.
Very nice pub with a great chilled out atmosphere. Large selection of real ales. Definitely worth visiting.
L. B.
Great selection of beer and good food
G.
Marvellous array of draught and keg beers. Worth 5 stars for this alone. A reasonable choice of wine and a few speciality gins also caught my eye.
Reasonable food menu with ample servings. My pickled pork belly, served with creamed potato, sliced carrots and shredded savoy cabbage was excellent - I would order it again (you don't see pickled pork on many menus). Unfortunaly, my wife's fish and chips was pretty ordinary. The batter was great but the fish dry and over cooked. She wasn't keen on the rough cut chips either.
Complimentary WiFi - ask for password.
K. S.
Went for Christmas meal with group of 8. Very good service and food was excellent for the price.
They catered for vegan and gluten free as well as regular menu.
Would highly recommend!
C. V.
Great pub away from the normal crowds. Tucked away, you have to know it's there. Expect great beer but don't expect a seat.
T. M.
Lovely pub with lots of independent/small beers. Quite small, but a great atmosphere. A little out the way, but a great location.
o. c.
Quite outstanding, the draught stout is out of this world and the mushroom soup and the engagement and enthusiasm of the staff quite exceptional. And where else can you ask for their special weekday sandwiches on a sunday and get them as a courtesy gesture to a customer
K. P.
Excellent beers and a great selection. Including done interesting and unusual ones. Informative staff. Great pub snacks. A great find.
C. B.
One of the best pubs in Nottingham. Kean's Head offers an impressive list of ales and continental beers. Lovers of single malts and great kitchen too.

D. C.
Great afternoon/evening although would have liked the volume turned up when the 60s rock was playing.
J. C.
Great choice of cask (went for 3 halves). Barman recommended cherry Kasteel for my wife - was excellent. Friends enjoyed too. Winner
