Just happened upon this old historical pub that happens to have a metal music venue upstairs. Had a great meal and so a fantastic metal show while here. One worker also offered to let me see the caves below, though I didn't have the time. Stop in this place!
L. B.
Great historic pub, one of three with a claim to be the oldest in Nottingham. Good beer options. Caves sound interesting, but I didn't have enough time to explore, one for a future visit.
L. P.
I come here a lot with my friends. The staff are lovely - You can tell they're like family. The drink prices are reasonable and I've always felt welcomed!
There are also quite a few events that go on there but I always seem to miss them but it is the place to go! Especially if you enjoy the rock and metal scene!
M. F.
Great pub with a great vibe. Excellent choice of hand pulled beers. I'll be coming back for the cave tour. 👍🤞

We had to reschedule our board games meet up, proved a food night.
Staff always welcoming and friendly. Always polite and know range
Pub is clean, open spaced. Good access for disabled as easy to move. Patrons always relaxed and great atmosphere.
Great space.
M. A.
I believe the second oldest pub but also a fantastic rock bar with great selection of beer and a pub menu for food
D. M.
Best rock pub in the country; excellent range at decent prices and the staff are fantastic. I've literally changed my work schedule so I can land in Nottingham more often based purely on my experience here. Killer soundtrack.
G. P.
The Sal is a Nottingham institution. It's always been a pub for bikers and rock music fans. Possibly the oldest pub in the city. A place for those who follow a different path. A friendly and inclusive clientele. Highly recommend.
F. C.
Awesome pub, great staff and a safe and pleasant atmosphere. Food is amazing and reasonably priced, especially considering portion sizes.
Excellent gigs, and general shenanigans. Favourite pub in Notts \m/
k. h.
Went upstairs for the first time on a Saturday night. £3 entry I think it was. The atmosphere was epic, great music and a stage that had a couple of dancers. Had a great time
A. B.
If you're visiting Nottingham Castle, or on this side of Nottingham, you should give this pub a try. It's got real character and is always popular and busy.
Be prepared to queue for drinks however, as the staff always seem to struggle to get on top of those waiting to be served - maybe they need more staff, as this would lead to happy punters!!

Loved the place, bikers and alternative young people, great loud rock music but I can't go back as my wife didn't like it and food not very good. Wish I was young enough to frequent this place.
C. T.

An amazing historic pub that plays heavy metal and is full of interestingly tattooed characters. And the real ale is good, too 😋

Very atmospheric pub, 3 of the 4 room have been dug out of the cliff. Lots of history...very friendly and efficient staff, and good by beer.

L. R.
This is a fantastic pub. Something for most tastes.
The new food menu has just launched, the portions are fantastic, the variety of dishes again has something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable.
The Landlord has just refurbished one of the snugs with new tables, carpet and curtains (he says new chairs are on the way too)
This is truly a 5* pub

Met up with my brother Jethro durrant for lunch
Burger was great really nice friendly people even got a private tour of the caves
Jethro explaining in detail the history of the caves
P. S.
Quirky place, lots of nooks and crannies. Nice pint of Guinness!

A real wow pub with its history & cavenous rooms..top food too & real ale choices
E. S.
An absolute cracker of a place. It helps to be into rock music, but what an experience anyway. Superb pub.
R. S.
That's my top choice in Nottingham
M. G.
Well worth a visit, nice old pub selling good assortment of beers, loved the music.
V. B.
Warm and friendly, from the name I wasn't expecting rock music from such an old building. It was very nice and enjoyable
L. T.
Great pub for bikers and like minded drinkers with plenty of real ales to choose from and a great jukebox
F. D.
Great staff, good choice of drink and some amazing bands play here
d. h.
Really good old pub, metal music and some quieter rooms of to the side. It has ghost walks sometimes, they are worth a try if they still do them. Good selection of beer's and wide selection of spirits. They have a little club room upstairs that have gigs or rock nights.
m. S.
This has to be my favourite pub in Nottingham. Staff were brilliant, beer was fantastic, food was incredible and affordable too. Can't recommend this place enough. If you are close by go have a beer and a chat. It is a rock pub but the volume was perfectly acceptable to talk over.
P. T.
Always warm and friendly atmosphere and staff. Great choice of beers
D.
Passed this old pub with my friend. We had heard this was the oldest pub in Notts. We went in and ordered a drink. The landlord Jason was in the pub and started chatting with us. He was a font of knowledge in relation to the history of Nottingham and the Salutation. We listened to the story's and facts he was conveying to us. We couldn't believe that Jason was taking so much of his own time to tell us the history of Nottingham and the Salutation. Jason told us about the pub and the different nights they hold in relation to live music. As we were interested with the history Jason off his own back took us down to look at the caves beneath the pub and gave us a history lesson on the way. We are so grateful to the time you took to show us some history.
I thoroughly recommend the Salutation to visit on any trip around Nottingham. This place is full if history and we enjoyed our time.
B. S. (.
One of the friendliest and most interesting places I have ever enjoyed a drink.
S. B.
Wonderful historic pub. Caters mainly for the heavy metal and rock crowd. Very spacious place with a great Landlord who takes care of his beer and punters.
D. H.
Nice atmosphere, good selection of ales, good service.
C. U.
Pub for the rock and metal crowd, the range of drinks is okay but could be better. They have club nights on upstairs at the weekends. There's also a range of different things happening over the week such as monthly shibari lessons and other stuff. They also have a roof terrace which is a nice addition. Definitely worth a visit if that's your scene.
L. B.
Other than the 1 random hippie guy that was talking out of his arse that we didn't know, staff was brilliant, drinks were great, metal music all throughout and it's a free jukebox on Sundays!
I'd say that prices are a bit over priced, but really, it's a pub, the prices are pounds are always high, so there's really no issue there. Atmosphere was fantastic, outdoor seating until 11pm, it's a great time with friends.
S. V.
Always good drinks and amazing staff!
A. M.
Overall a nice metal pub which I wish it would be getting transformed into a night club every Saturday, since there isn't one in the city to cover our needs.
What I'd like to see to consider it the best place to drink and listen to metal:
- A DJ at least for the busy weekend nights!
- Speakers for the tables outside.
- TV screens playing music videos!
- The music a bit louder at nights (maybe it happened just a couple of times when I was there?)

What a great place, not been in for years but decided while out shopping to take the wife for a visit as she's never been. Hadn't booked a table and it was very busy but the helpful and friendly staff managed to find us one. Great atmosphere and fab pint of Guinness, roll on the next shopping trip so we get to go again. Cheers.

It's so reassuring to see that a winning formula like ye olde sal hasn't changed. Its been 25years since I crossed the threshold and walking in today was like a step back in time. Excellent service good choice of beers, wonderful food and brilliant music. I won't be leaving it so long this time for a return trip.
H. P.
Great pie and a pint in interesting surroundings.
Good service and value for money.
M. C.
Great beer, great atmosphere! Range of spiced rum is impressive.
R. N.
Great place to try a few local pints and meet new friends. This is an old rocker bar so the people are friendly and enjoying some good old rock music. Try the tequila beer or Old Rosie's sceumpy cider.
N. C.

D. F.
My favourite pub, and no other place seems to be able to beat it! Amazing food for the best price, pizza that seems to have just been out of my nona's oven, and the friendliest staff. Just been again with my little girl and she loves it too! ♥️♥️♥️
H. T.
I love it here....great atmosphere and always welcoming.

Great atmosphere, very welcoming. As a visitor to Nottingham I wasn't expecting to feel so familiar! Staff and patrons were excellently friendly! I'll be returning on my next visit to Nottingham!!

I would have not gone in here if my friend hadn't told me too as it looks a bit grim outside...I was completely surprised with how lovely it was inside, full old pub with original features! The choice at the bar was awesome and we'll priced!
M. S.
Amazing atmosphere! Good rock and alternative music. Fantastic people working and visiting this place. Good selection of drinks and lovely, not pricey food! Place to get there!

Great range of ales, great atmosphere, quiet back room (snug) to just chill
Prices are very reasonable too
I may have just found my new Saturday evening haunt

Great music. Good pint of Guinness. Friendly staff and customers. If you like heavy metal this place is a must.
L. A.
So many awesome tunes, and great beer!
G. D.
Check your normy attitude at the door and this is the best bar in Nottingham if you want to talk to people who are trying to live outside the normal sphere of human integration. Phenomenal staff too if you treat them like humans and with the respect they deserve.
D. B.
Fantastic......you have to visit it to appreciate it a good selection of ales and ciders
D. B.
A fave place of mine when I was a student at People's College many moons ago.
Glad to see it still has character
I didnt get the atmosphere as it was 4pm so it was rather empty, but would love to see this little place buzzing again.
s. m.
Friendly staff, good beer and food.
D. B.
Good beer , food. Nice atmosphere
j. t.
It was my first night out from ages 🤣🤣. Great atmosphere 👌, lovely 🍸 🍹 🍸, people friendly, costumers services on high level. Perfect place for night out with friends. Rock music 🎶 🎵 what I love.
B. M.
Great bar, great real ales ,nice atmosphere , great music, staff where spot on one of my favourites
K. S.
Went a comedy show in the upstairs room.
A broadly standard selection of drinks. A pint of ale was £3.90 so you have an idea of bar pricing Aug2021.
S. S.
Great pub, great atmosphere, good selection of beers and real ales. Enjoy the rock on your Fridays and Saturday's.
P. M.
I have been going to this pub for more years than I care to remember. The staff are friendly they have an excellent range of beers and spirits the food is great and best of all is the great atmosphere 🤘😀🤘🍺

As usual the sal, is a great place to meet people from different 'tribes' they are so friendly and welcoming .
J. S.
Great for after work drinks when its normal drinking hours. Our usual place to visit when we finish a shift at Squares, Lovely staff that will always go the extra mile. They even allow me to bring a sports bag knowing I have had a game that day which shows that they will help anyone
R. D.
Good beer and the Hot Dogs are amazing. Feels a ruff but that's part of the charm well worth a visit for any trip to Nottingham
K. D.

Great rock and metal bar/pub experience. Gets busy at weekends, please help keep the place going. It holds memories for many, many years for tours, gigs and night's out. Great food, too. Good Luck!!! \m/
S. F.
Come here after work and never had a bad experience, staff are always friendly and so are the customers. Great place to visit for if you like your rock music and ales. Already looking forward to my next pint here!
I. F.
Great pub, great atmosphere and a proper friendly welcome.
j. o.
Great pint of beer in one of the cities oldest pubs.
I may be mistaken but it looks like the place has been given a good clean from top to bottom and it feels refreshed.
My drinking group has been in here a few times lately and I think we will become regular visitors !
G. (.
Lovely staff, lovely beer.
Didn't eat but saw plenty of food being served and it all looked and smelled great!
C. F.
Liked the visit. Punk and metal are not dead...
M. H.
This pub is well worth a visit. It is unique in itself. The staff are very friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. Although we didn't eat there the food that came out was plentiful and looked extremely appetising. It is a bar where a lady could go without being threatened - few and far between these days and I am speaking as a 68 year old. Will most surely visit when we are back in Nottingham.
M. C.
Excellent place to take friends and heat some rock and drink few pints. Live shows normally on the weekend. Recommend to visit
J. C.
A great pub with a heavy metal juke box, cracking beer and a good selection of other drinks to keep you occupied. The staff were ace and the clientele eclectic. Had a couple of really good nights here and hope to have more in the future. Definitely a niche place, but I loved it. Also, they have a DJ upstairs in an air conditioned bar with a dance floor.
J. S. “. D.
Lovely staff , historic pub
N. M.
Nice atmosphere for lovers of alternative/rock music! Can get quite busy though with limited seats or floorspace.
T. C.
Great pub, been going here for years. Staff are keeping everyone safe during these odd times, Good outdoor table service.
j. b.
Excellent traditional metal bar with a jukebox!
L. M.
I always have a good time here. I love that they cater to an alt crowd and have great goth nights. The staff are usually friendly and the prices are great, especially in the attic. A little annoying they don’t take card in the attic but I love that they’ve spun it into a gimmick, lowered the prices and called the scheme “Cash in the attic” to make up for it.
V. M.
As there was an event of the month on it was very busy but not so much that it was ages to get a drink, the longest I waited was 10mins I think. Plays heavy metal songs and does have dancers on as the same but it's okay I guess. Not sure if I would go back mainly because I don't listen to that type of music and it was a friend who dragged us there. Overall good place if your into that music, I didn't want to give anything lower as the staff were wonderful, the people who went were nice enough as well.
m. B.
Could be better for an old historical pub
M. L.
Classic Nottingham pub, great choice of real ale and full of alternative people!
H. a. D. B.
What more do you want?
Vastly improved since lockdown.
CAMRA discount. A menu of real ales, great music and a good selection of pub grub. Lots of additional outside seating now.
Fantastic staff.
G. T. 1.
One of the oldest pubs in Nottingham. Friendly staff and customers. Rock pub with rock/alternative/Goth nights upstairs....open mic acoustic downstairs on Sundays. Little rooms scatters around with tables and chairs if you want a bit of quiet. 5/10 mins walk from the centre of Nottingham.
J. s.
Celebrated a vowel renewal down in the caves ..reception upstairs .great pub friendly staff .
A. D.
Great atmosphere. Really lovely staff who make you feel welcome. Love every visit. Stay till close everytime!
R. N.
Personally I love this pub. It's one of the oldest or claims to be one of the oldest in the area of Nottingham. It does a range of different beers and you can try and sample everyone including scrumpy cider. The people are incredible but this is a rock and roll place and if you are a friendly sort you will meet people and enjoy your time.
A. &. B. O.
Realy good and lovely bar for good rock tunes and delicious pints and drams with your family 👍🍺🥃🥂🤟❤
G. M.
Great place to drink, friendly staff, beer spot on .visit as soon as you can

In my Top 5 pubs in Nottingham.....Just a great pub.......great atmosphere........sound owners that are down to earth.....food brilliant.....loads of history behind the pubs existence .....check it out
D. w.
One of the oldest pubs in Nottingham (along with the Bell on the square and the trip to Jerusalem). Got plenty of character and charm. Real ale pub so plenty of choice for beer drinkers. Not to expensive and helpful staff. Some nights (Saturday included) has a heavy metal/death metal theme but still great atmosphere (music may take a little getting used to)
S. H.
Fantastic beers and atmosphere
M. A. (.
Great venue and public house.
This is a great place to visit and grab a traditional ale in a relaxed atmosphere. The pub is very welcoming and friendly, no one is discrimination against and every group type welcome.
Music is eclectic and fun. Overall worth a visit.
W. F.
Great pub. Great food
S. H.
Good music for rockers. Good atmosphere and selection of drinks. Lovely evening on the benches outside.
T. S.
My favourite public house in the whole of Nottinghamshire and easily in my top five in the whole of the United Kingdom. Great atmosphere, great selection of drinks, great food, great music, great staff, amazing ancient architecture to look at, other friendly clientele too. Highly recommended.
B. M.
Nice pint might frighten people away with it's dark atmosphere
A. H.
Great pub Great beer Great atmosphere
A. H.
Best pub in Notts! Always feel great here. Amazing people! Authentic place full of rock'n'roll!
S. S.
Fantastic pub for families, bikers and party goers. With great real ales which are kept in tip top condition by the manager. Lovely food, great and relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff. They also host some fantastic events, they also have live bands and a rocking atmosphere with the Djs every Friday and Saturday nights. Not to mention the Saxon caves beneath! :-D which you can tour. Well worth the visit.
G. M.
Different to most other places with a good layout. Rock music (but very very low atm ?!?! Hopefully a Covid or a post 11 pm thing) Open till 3 a.m. Nice people both sides of the bar.
G. P.
Always friendly staff and lovely atmosphere
S. S.
Fantastic atmosphere brilliant bar staff & have live bands upstairs. Absolutely love this place as soon I visited this place earlier this year I knew I would be coming back again & again & visit to Nottingham wouldn't be the same without paying the Salutation a visit. Love it.
G. I.
This heavy metal pub is fun with great beer and great music. The day we went they weren't serving food, but we did get to go into the caves under the bar. It really is a great place.
J.
This place deserves five stars. Situated by maid Marian way in the centre of Nottingham, Ye Old Salutation Inn is a real English pub seeping with history. The ambience is better suited to those with a preference to rock music, and the clientele and staff adhere to this also, but rock or not, this place is brilliant.
Tip: Ask a member of staff to show you the caves!
If you ask nicely, you’ll be taken down to caves which are almost one thousand years old. Hats off to the long-haired brunette guy who happily showed me and a few friends the cave. He hopped off the bar and he seemed genuinely happy to share his knowledge.
A. T.
Great bar, with a rock event once a month
J.
What can you say. So friendly. Good prices. Good selection. Best evening spent in here
A. B.
Excellent service nice people would recommend the food and a beer
Not too pricy but loads of drinks and food menus etc 😋

What a great pub. A good place to finish off the night as it's a late closer. Friendly punters, and you can make new friends if you're lucky. Some of the men have lovely hair.
K. B.
Wow what a hidden gem in the middle of Nottingham. Not only the OLDEST pub in Nottingham but the friendliest as welll. Jason the landlord is fantastic . A genuine gent and true font of local knowledge. The pub has so much history and such a nice place to visit with great ales and food that's made on site. The chef Is also really nice!. I would reccomend the old salutation if your ever visit Nottingham.. or if you live here! Cheers
B. L.
Nice atmosphere. Varied selection of drinks.
O. D.
Quite liked this old school rock bar
D. K.
Rock, noise, atmosphere and a randomly very accepting group of people! I don't dress to suit this kind of bar but it doesn't matter, quality night out, real ale, ciders and a great atmosphere! Facilities are OK but could easily be better lol!
C. S.
I visited here for the first time last week for a gig. The staff are welcoming and helpful, there are plenty of places to sit and it has a lovely atmosphere. The sound quality of the live bands was great.
D. K.
I've been coming here ever since I moved to Notts 12 years ago. It's The Sal, it has its own character and serves a lot of rockers, Pagans, ale-drinkers, ghost-hunters and adventurous townies alike. Only gave it four stars because I haven't tried the food yet.
P. 6.
Always good music good beer
J. t.
Old fashioned pub in the heart of Nottingham, good crowd, good staff and cheap drinks. Alternative venue which is right up my street as meant good music with an event called wildside upstairs which is an 80s inspired event. Awesome night overall!
M. B.
Have always loved the Sal. As someone who is approaching 50 I know I am getting too old to do the 2.00am visits often but the karaoke is excellent, the atmosphere is brilliant and the beer is well kept.
D. N.
Good open space to enjoy a drink outside or go in side, good atmosphere, nice friendly staff.
Z. K.

Best Pub in Nottingham! Biker vive, nice cheap drinks and great staff
M. G.
Nice relaxed Rock pub, with good beer and music.
S.
There are very few places left where you can walk in and instantly feel transported back in time to a world filled with questing knights and courtly nobles. The Sal' (as it's colloquially known) is one of these places, supposedly dating back as far as the 1200s, when it was used as an ale house and tannery. It's now part of Nottingham's prestigious roster of heavy metal pubs, boasting a broad selection of beer, warm, welcoming environment, and frequent live music.
s. f.
OK, a bit different for a 60 year old, but I find the kind of people in these type of establishments to be more none judgemental than other pubs. Its a a modern day heavy rockers venue, which at even at my age and as a established ageing left zep fan agreeable.
W. S. Y.
Nice place to have a break and drinks with your friends, nice music and good beers, if you are a Metal fan this is your place in Nottingham
J. W.
Pleasure as always, great atmosphere, wide variety of drinks, great music
S. A.
Historic pub, good beer, pleasant staff.

Spot on. Staff very helpful and prompt. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a chilled out pint in Nottingham.
C. B.
Great pub love it
S. B.
It's a but fun and a bit different.
Decent rock and metal soundtrack, friendly clientele, and a much improved range of spirits.
T. S.
Great beer and amazing tour of the caves by the chef, thank you
P. d. W.
The third oldest pub in the world. Sadly the prices are not original, but the place is full of character and charm. Also, great little music venue upstairs.
R. S.
A fantastic historic pub (building dating back to the 13th Century) serving several real ales and a wide variety of other beverages (including mead!). Friendly staff, a function room upstairs that hosts frequent rock nights, motorcycle parking outside and some historic caves underneath that you can visit on the scheduled tours.
M. H.
I love this place - an amazing mix of bikers, goths and boring people like me can all feel comfortable here. Nice lunch too!
K. U.
Good place, friendly staff, friendly atmosphere.
J. K.
Nottingham's beloved sticky rock pub. A bit of historical flavour text from Le Wikipedia :
"The current building was constructed as a workshop for a tanner with living accommodation above in 1240 on the site of an old alehouse known as The Archangel Gabriel Salutes the Virgin Mary."
Not somewhere you would come for a nice meal, but for rock/metal/alternative events and live bands it's got a lively calender of regular shenanigans.
G. T.
Fantastic rock/metal venue. Chilled out seating below and a good sized dance floor above. If you like rock and metal - then I highly recommend.
S. E.
Very professional and courteous staff and very quick service, I would definitely recommend visiting this wonderful pub 😀
L. C.
Great place, good atmosphere and great drink selection.

Fabulous place full of character, always a warm welcome from staff and regulars. Saturday is a rock night with bands and djs and plenty going on in the week too and the best jukebox in town

Fascinating and historical pub. Truly charming inside. There's also a small garden. Been there often, always happy with the beers and the food is good as well.
K. B.
An interesting old building with wood everywhere. A limited selection of ale compared to my last visit many years ago. Despite that it had a cpl of interesting ones. Nice and friendly and quiet.
K. G.
Always a warm welcome as part of Madame parboiled historical pub tour

A great old pub. Ive been going in there on and off since the late 70s, and although the place has changed over the years, i still enjoy going in and meeting up with old mates Good Beer, friendly staff

Great rock pub, fantastic beer
B. J.
Although only the lower end is original, still worth a visit to see the well-worn flagstones at the entrance and imagine all the laughter and intrigue discussed within.

A one of kind pub, every city should have something akin to this place. Great music, warm and friendly reception all the time.
J. B.
Amazing place still after all these years and a hood drink too
B. D.
I think the sal is gradually going downhill. Increasingly it's full of noisy obnoxious punters. It's still possible to chill out in the back rooms. Beers still decent
i. m.
Good beer good food can cost a little to much sometimes. Other pubs in the area offer the same sort of stuff but don't have the age.
M. M.
Went here for a gig - barring technical hitches leading to a late start, it had a great atmosphere and pulled a large, friendly audience. Will definitely be going again!
P. H.
Great for a pint - outside space is brilliant. Authentic ye olde drink in one of Notts oldest establishments. Food is good for price.

A long time local of mine-since about 1977-but sadly over the past year or so,its taken a nose-dive.very few craft ales on sale, lots of draught beer/cider comes and goes on a regular basis.they used to do food-which was excellent-but sadly no longer.the place needs a revamp-not a refurb-and some decent money going into updating the place...although its a Rock pub,its very difficult to often hear the jukebox-and good luck in getting them to turn it up.
