Reviews of The Bear Inn, Oxford
D. V.
A small pub with big garden! The app said it will tale 40 minutes to have the order booked so we qued and we got the drinks faster. The service seemed to be more in inside then outside so having more staff could be better. Having some kombucha options will be better as well. The interior was nice but soft drinks was over priced.
A. N.
Watch your head! The outdoor seating is fantastic and the indoor nice and quaint with lots of old ties and momentos inside. The staff was very nice, the prices fair, although the whiskey selection could be a bit broader. Recommend as a nice spot once it gets a bit dark out.
J.
Have visited this place a few times, the oldest pub in Oxford they say.
Really cosy inside, and surprisingly wasn't as busy as I normally have found it in the past.
Felt like something was a little missing inside, could of been a bit cosier. Good selection at the bar. Outside was great, they have sorted good outside seating with good heaters.
Felt a bit of music both inside and outside would have made the vibe nicer.
L. H.
Nice pub in centre of Oxford with historic building. Food is nice but overpriced for what you get. Paid 16 for a burger that while tasty wasn't as filling as I'd have liked. Otherwise no problems, ordering through the app is quick and efficient.
A. F.
An Oxford classic. Oldest pub in Oxford. A but crammed for indoor seating, but you should check their rather unique collection of public school ties in the backroom. They offer outdoors seating including under a marquee. It is expensive for a pub but then again so is every other central Oxford pub. Food is good quality and service is faster than indicated on the app generally
P. P.
Look, just to make it clear from the start, it's not the oldest pub in Oxford, you know that, I know that, the staff know that. It's old but not as old as it wants. That out of the way, it's a lovely crocked little maze of a pub with staff with good banter and a nice range of beers, lots of cut ties and that low roof, hobbit nock feel.
B. W.
Perfectly Oxford eccentric pub. Tiny inside but beer garden tables really extend the vibe outside. Visit for a random conversation ("I'm a Roads (sic) scholar", anti-semite with a carrier bag or a 6ft 9 Dane bent double) stay for the Fuller's beer. 😆
E. C.
Normally the oldest pubs are tourist traps serving awful food&drink. But The Bear is the exception. Fantastic food, great beers and incredibly welcoming staff. A must go after a long day touring!
P. P.
One of Oxford's great pubs. Don't wear a tie when you go!
T. E.
Very nice traditional Oxford pub with pleasant outdoor area. Good selection of beers, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
C.
Iconic pub with some good outdoor seating and a cosy inside. Be ready to donate a snippet of your tie if your wearing one 😉
The staff were friendly and accommodating, helping us find our table and use the online menu.
We had a light lunch here, and the food was piping hot and very tasty, would recommend a visit.
M. R.
This is one of those pubs you’ve been “looking for.” It’s old (oldest in Oxford). It’s small. It has cask beers. It’s quaint. And you have to drink a beer here before you go. They also have a small garden outside in case it’s too full inside. I had beers with my wife and threw some snacks at my kids while I enjoyed my beer! Great place.
C. C.
Great little pub, good beer and food. Very busy but that's to be expected given the location
A. W.
I guess it depends what your want and when you want it. 🤔😁
The Best is there oldest pub in Oxford, and it shows. It's small with a very low ceiling. Several taller people were drinking their points with their heads tipped to one side. 😂
The atmosphere is good but gets very cramped very quickly, especially on weekend evenings.
That said, it's very friendly with a good bet selection - and if you're a tourist you kinda have to go there to say you've been to Oxford's oldest pub!
E. G.
Nice historic pub in the centre of oxford. This pub is the oldest (or one of the oldest) in the down and you can feel the true pub atmosphere. Good beers and companion food served in large portions make this place a good choice also for lunch or dinner. The inside is quite small and a little dark and it can get hot in summer. Better to grab a beer and stay outside. The staff is friendly and price are on the average of the area.
D.
Nice small pub, great selection of beers ales and spirts nice friendly staff
C. H.
Lovely little pub with well kept, small selection, beer. Tie collection started in 1955 I believe. Very nice staff too.
P. T.
The oldest pub in Oxford, located in the city center, close to some of the main colleges of the university, this place will offer you an authentic experience. You can have a look at the impressive collection of tie clips while enjoying a drink from their selection of beers, ciders and more. Pay attention to the fact that, due to the historical nature of the pub, the ceiling is very low and will force the tallest among us to walk in an awkward fashion
H. N.
3 stars, why so harsh you ask?
If all you care about is the atmosphere and food, come here, BUT...
Read the whole story. It's an easy read, I promise.
- Great burgers and chips
- Cider selection basic to poor (yes, I know, not a high demand item, but it counts to me!)
- Beer selection good
- Ladies bathroom was pretty bad as the lock was not only broken but completely not functioning (no room to stand and wait either, plus don't bring people who aren't CONFIDENT with stairs. I'm a healthy, mobile female and I was almost not confident.)
- Totally charming in the authentic, old style pub fashion
- SLOW FOOD SERVICE when busy
(Sorry but after 40 mins I went in to check on our order of two burgers with chips. I heard the chef swear and say he'd forgotten, resulting in our order arriving 50 mins after we had ordered. I know you were busy, guys, but seriously...)
- Waitors were lovely and polite
- Covid-safe service, QR code/Internet based ordering system
Tbh I'm in no massive hurry to come back. I didn't like the lack of a bathroom lock, the slow/forgetful chefs and I wish they'd invest more in cider.
However if you have someone craving to go to a Ye Olde Pubbe and will forgive these sort of flaws, bring them here.
W. B.
Excellent pint of ESB. Unique pub a must visit. Lots of outdoor seating.
R. K.
The oldest pub in Oxford, has a lot of character.
V. D. G.
Lovely small pub with good food and beer selection. Worth going during Sunday before lunch as it was quite busy when we left around 2pm.
Staff is lovely and attentive, a truly gem to visit if you are in Oxford.
T. G.
Good food, slow service.
V. V.
nothing special. it is very small inside so you ll be on the street most likely so you are not actually in the Bear Inn. Staff is nice and we had a good time w friends
M. M.
We had a great May Day here. It was good to see so many performers showcasing their art.
A. T.
They claim it to be the oldest pub, est in 1242. Good place to have drink if you are looking for some old British pub, with low ceilings. Not the most comfortable pubs, but go there for heritage and not comfort
I. T.
Great pub! So cute and you can tell that little has been done since 1242. Tall people may struggle in there!! Nice fire place and beer, we didn’t get any food but it looked good. Will go back for sure
P. N.
Excellent pub, good beer, good service. Will definitely visit again.
M. S.
It's a nice pub. Moderate prices. Food is good and reasonable portions. But service is super slow. My order took a long, long time to arrive, after reminders, and by then, my friends had finished eating.
S. M.
One of the oldest pub in England and an authentic place in otherwise very turistic Oxford. I stopped by twice in 3 days for a pint of beer in the afternoon, sitting in the outdoor patio, and it was always very quiet despite there being several people. One of the two times I was here (on Sunday) they had a grill out, and you could order bratwurst, burger or other grilled items for just 6 pounds. I had the burger and it was great!
H. S. (.
Historic pub in Oxford!
P. S.
The oldest pub in Oxford, a pub has been on this site since the 1250's. Very friendly Landlord, sublime coiled Cumbrian sausage. Well worth a visit if you love old public houses like myself.
E. V.
Super nice pub in the middle of Oxford. Average prices and really tasty sandwiches. The pub is quite small but has a nice garden outside. The staff was really nice and quick.
M. L.
Oldie worldy pub with a big atmosphere and large coverd garden area
B. C.
Classic fish and chips, with more fish than chips! Nice beer too. Very small inside but lots of patio seating in back that is covered in case of rain. Took about 30 minutes for food, but they warned me they were busy. All I can ask.
T. P.
One of Oxfords older pubs. Great place for food and drink.
C. B.
Historic, cosy, decent beer. Only there for half an hour but it was very pleasant.
C. H.
The Bear is a great pub that has bundles of character. The inside is small (in every way, mind your head!) but beautiful. They have set up a gazebo outside with seating and heaters, where you can order straight to your table.
A. N.
Fantastic drinks excellent customer service. Hope to visit again soon.
M. T.
Great little pub, delicious home-made food and this atmosphere of home and history...
P. C.
First time there. Sat in garden. Service for food and drinks very quick. All very good.
S. H.
Lovely little pub, nice beer garden
Ladies toilet is a climb be warned
W. D.
Great drinks, awesome atmosphere and people, highly recommend for Drink on the town!
R. P.
Friendly staff in this small bar. There are only about 5-6 tables inside. When we were here, there was only one other group of people here but they were so loud we couldn't hear ourselves and had to move to the other room.
We didn't notice they had a garden/patio area until we left.
We didn't hear a call for last orders, and felt a bit rushed when they came to tell us to drink up.
H. C.
Really small place but with ample history and heart. Good beer and top service. Pub fare is very good too. Step into history here. Well worth a stop and a pint.
N. R.
Oldest pub in Oxford worth a visit. Drinks are expensive.
I. G.
Very cosy pub, serving a great pint of Pride.
J. R.
Nice pub, good selection of wine. Friendly staff.
J. D.
Great beer selection, really neat old building with good ambiance, nice bar staff and decent food.
M. W.
Nice pub, unfortunately service for food very slow. Therefore only 4 stars.
R. M.
Great iconic Oxford place. Located in a narrow hidden street, with live jazz on Wednesdays, just a must. Food if great, patio is great, good staff. What else ca I say...very worth it.
D. S.
Quaint place where the owner is pretty crazy about collecting Ties. You'll see when you get there. Also outdoor garden with marquee and heaters. Good feel of rustic Oxford here
G. T.
Small but cozy pub. Take a look at the frames full of pieces of ties.
M. O.
Cosy little pub. They have a nice menu where it's easy to find something for everyone. There isn't that much space inside, but there's a terrace at the back that houses plenty of people. Prices are reasonable.
D. A.
Excellent pub!!! Very nice location and polite staff!
J. A.
Such a lovely old pub, no music or machines, bliss.
Great friendly helpful staff and super pub food.
Nothing pretentious.
J. K.
Tiny pub full of happy people. Lovely pub garden, bigger than the pub. Beware of the Rickety steps up to the Ladies. All part of the experience. Spot the tie collection.
M. H.
Generally, my first stop pub in Oxford...for a marvellous pint (at least) of Fuller's ESB. One day I *will* eat here too.
R. B.
Called in with a few friends for a bite to eat and a pint. Food and beer excellent. Pint of ale was bright and fresh. Sandwiches well filled and salad was excellent. Sadly only way to order was via an app. It worked fine but I just hope the pub co"s don't retain this system post Covid. It's so impersonal.
I much prefer l placing the order with a human being.
I. F.
Looking all day for a cosy place with fire. Found it! Very cozy, nice environment.
C. G.
A legendary pub for Oxford
Always a memorable moment in life to return for a beer.
D. A.
Surprising amount of outdoor marquee space at the back, booked for groups of 6. With heaters and table waiting service and online ordering
M. E.
I spoke for some time with the prime minister's son about the state of the world, post-Trumxit. They have two fireplaces filled with burning wood. This pub is a warm embrace by the washed masses. To be fair, not sure if the chap was relations to the prime minister, but he was in a three piece suit, so...
G. B.
Delightful pub with great homemade food 😋 try the steak pie and the hamburger 🍔😋
C. B.
Always a great welcome with a super atmosphere. A must visit place to visit when in Oxford!
J. L.
Makes you feel as if you have entered a time warp. Very cool pub, fully if historical artifacts.
K. C.
Small but very attractive little pub!
C. C.
Love the outdoor seating! Great atmosphere and the online ordering is on point! Much quicker than waiting at the bar in other places.
T. M.
If you are in the City its well worth a visit. Historic
C. F.
Great, welcoming pub.LOVED it!Staff super helpful/friendly.
S. C.
Pub in heart of Oxford. Good beer and atmosphere.
F. B.
The oldest pub in Oxford established in 1242, which is more than respectable! Great atmosphere, great beer!
T. C.
Cool place, say we've been but poor ale choice, girlfriends gin was nice but nothing special. Ties were funky! Worth a visit
D. B.
The oldest pub in Oxford! A must to visit!
J. R.
Really lovely place for a lunch stop. Very COVID secure with a nice outside area and friendly staff. Getting to the loo is a bit tricky up some steep winding stairs but not surprising as it's reputed to be the oldest pub in Oxford.
l. d.
Such a lovely, warm and unique pub. We only stayed for a drink but would definitely go back.
P. M.
Myself and my wife were on holidays in Oxford for the weekend from London. Fantastic food and service, great outdoor beer garden with gas fire. It was good to see social distancing & nhs track and trace.
M. B.
Great oldie worldie pub right in the centre original one built in 1242 I am led to believe, live music Tuesday and Wednesday, also you can bring your own food in on those nights as the restaurant is not open.
I. S.
The pub itself is very small but the outside patio / beer garden is quite big. Lots of tables and ample seating!
I. O.
Lucky enough to be in the tie room. Nice staff and great beer.
b. b.
Loved the heated outdoor seating.
Also undercover 👍
Food was okay but overpriced for what it was.
Glad to find some place open. But won't be returning. Didn't feel it was special or value for money
Z. G.
This place feels like it’s out of a movie. Super small and cramped yet it’s exactly like a pub you would expect for this age. If you are a tourist in Oxford, this is the exact type of place you want to see. Excellent service and a really cool vibe. Grab a beer inside, take it all in for a brief moment, then waltz out to the back of the building where they have outdoor seating. This bar is especially interesting if you are 6 foot or taller as the ceiling is like 5’10” or so.
D. L.
Had a great night out here good beer and staff nice
A.
A must-visit place if you're in Oxford. Pleace is a bit cramped, but it's the oldest pub in Oxford, so it's understandable.
N. B.
This is our most favourite pub in Oxford. The staff are amazing and so lovely. Food is lovely. It's nice to come to the same pub 3 months after our last visit and see the same lovely people working here.
J. S.
We usually enjoy a couple of beers here when we visit Oxford.
Quickly little snug pub with a long history of entertaining students through the ages.
Seems popular every time we have been, evening times have been packed but that makes for a good vibe.
It's a tiny place, seating limited and ceilings low...just duck and enjoy like we do.
T.
A slightly hidden away sanctuary in busy Oxford. It is ancient, and a pleasure to sit and enjoy a beer or two away from the bustling streets. There are thousands of 'clipped off' tie ends from drinkers who were happy to exchange a snip off their tie for a half-pint of beer. I enjoyed reading the labels attached to these ties, and some of them at least 100 years.
Very good beer served by very happy bar staff. I visited in the mid afternoon and got a lovely seat by the window. There was a spare chess set, so enjoyed a game with my other half. All in all a delightful afternoon and I felt privileged to enjoy such a historical place.
D. Z.
Busy and warm, with a wonderful vibe.
D. R.
Great place for a quick pint. Doesnt have alot of seating space but offers quite a few brands of craft beer. But since it's the oldest pub in oxford which is built in 1242 and has a massive collection of 4500 ties l it's a must go place if you like exploring pubs.
A. G.
Still on form as always. Great pint of HSB
R. R.
This pub became one of my favourite and definitely I'll be back again. Besides that is one of the oldest in The UK. The staff is very friendly 🙂 and helpful.
G. R.
Tiny historic pub where many a famous faces have sunk a pint, one being the ex Australian PM Bob Hawke. Great pub with great staff!
W. T.
Outdoor seating is quite nice!
s. l.
Atmospheric pub of exceptional age and quality boozer
G. L.
An old building with a cool atmosphere, but it's not a gimmick. No 13th century cauldron on the fire bubbling soup or vaguely historical staff uniforms. Nothing like that.
It's just a pub with normal people running it and patronizing it. The food is good. The beer is good. The history of the bar just adds an invisible character. It's nice.
T. P.
Good pub for the football and an interesting selection of beers (and ties!)
Could do with being a bit bigger but its size and age is part of its charm.
When the football is on they set up a marquee outside and it's probably the best place to watch it. Some of the Patrons were quite aggressive last time but everyone stayed civil (despite us losing to Croatia).
C. M.
An Oxford classic. Great beers and a friendly welcome. The covid-safe outdoor area works really well, too.
C. B.
Oldest Pub in Oxford according to a local tour guide. It was closed when we were there so didn't get a chance to see inside!
J. E.
Fantastic pub of the high street. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Lots of outside seating.
S. G.
Amazing old pub with pewter bar. Cask Ales are wonderful. There is a fireplace that makes you feel at home and the food is very good. Beware that it is almost always crowded on weekends and food service can be slow. There is large outdoor seating area with propane heaters if you need breathing room.
K. L.
A tiny pub with a long tradition. Is has a nice atmosphere and is a must seen attraction in Oxford. On the walls there is a collection of over 4,500 snippets of club ties. When you enter the pub it is very likely that you will not get a seat immediately. But it is worth to wait for 10 minutes next to the bar until a seat is available.
A. G. D.
Amazing had a fantastic roast. Fantastic food. Definitely will be back ..
M. E.
Great historic pub. Low ceiling, wooden panelling, great tie collection on the wall. Interesting for tourists. Beer not kept well and one of he more expensive pubs in Oxford. Is always lively in here so is fun and a three star rating
A. C.
They managed to fit a friend and I in for a quick pint before we had a table booked elsewhere after we had struggled to find a table anywhere else. Quick service and really friendly.
J. J.
Good beer in a handy spot when touring Oxford
C. N.
Lovely pub, great English pub ambience, it gets full then empties just as fast, got served easy enough, staff very efficient and fun. Definitely go again next time I'm there. 9 quid for 2 pints was a bit steep but what the hell!
P. M.
Great traditional cosy pub with loads of character. Nice outside sitting area that is usable slot of the year. Not the tried the food but the beer seems to be kept well and theres an ok selection. Always a stop when we are pub crawling round Oxford
D. G.
Best fish&chips i eat in this 2weeks i stay in England! Great choices of beers. Fast and friendly personals. U must come here! Also big garden for sitting outside in a quiet area.
Maybe important...I’m german and like gastronomic. 😉
G. P.
Historic pub and the Morse connection is fun. Ties a talking point. Staff friendly. A few beers on offer.
T.
As a registered Nurse in England I feel extremely reassured by this establisments dedication to social distancing and covid guidelines. I would like to highlight Charlie and Dani specifically. They have provided incredible service which must be difficult given the current circumstances. Hats off to this pubs dedication to customer and public health 👏
D. P.
Tasty goat cheese burger and apparently the best ever need burger ( according to my wife)- we were pretty hungry though. Nice atmosphere. Small size . If you are over 6 feet tall either leave high heels at home or get ready for Gandalf style dodging if beams and ceilings.
D. T.
Always a great welcome, good beer, great company!
Great beers and great food always fun to visit. It's a pub full of history, has lovely friendly staff and great beers. Maybe it should be the next "new" Oxford College. Thoroughly recommend a visit.
E. B.
Historic pub which is cool to experience (the tie collection specifically) but beers are on the more expensive side because of that. Also there were strangely a lot of flies buzzing around in the evening which was strange. Still reccomend for a drink to soak in the history.
g. a.
This is one of the most historical pubs in Oxford. The first of many pubs opened in this beautiful city. I recommend it at least for a pint. Still well worth and cheap. The ceiling is very low so it's not the best for tall people. All the walls are covered with ties cutted from the students that completed their studies in Oxford. A nice tradition!
S. S.
The food was quite good (I had the smoked salmon salad and I really liked it) and pretty reasonably priced. There aren't that many tables inside but they have outdoor space. The stairs up to the women's toilet are horrible - steep and crooked - so be careful!
R. H.
May be the oldest, still open, pub in Oxford. On all occasions a fun place for a pint and food. On various visits we felt part of the neighborhood. Met wonderful folks who share the same background and concerns for their city as we do for ours.
Historic inside and out. Though I didn't leave a tie, I left with the anticipation of returning soon. Average pub prices. Crowded at lunch and evenings, but workable.
Among the ten best pubs we patronize when in the UK.
V. S.
Very small bar, only about 6-7 tables. But cozy and is probably the oldest bar in Oxford (started in 13 century). As a visitor, you should definitely have a pint there. And don't forget about another 13th century establishment -- the Turf.
W. L.
Favorite bar we went to in Oxford. Hilariously tiny, great backyard, terrific Pimm’s pitcher.
J. L. P.
Tiny little pub and it’s just beautiful.
Outdoor seating as well as indoor.
Good pricing
J. H.
Came here frequently as a student, returned a decade later and had a splendid afternoon, despite COVID resteictions. Charlie turned a technical malfunction into a joy of human interaction and kept us giggling at ever moment. Thanks for a great afternoon!
M. K.
Good beer, but very small inside and Oxford expensive. Centrally located with covered outside area- has heaters in the winter, but surrounded by buildings and essentially on the pavement. Nice service but only one female toilet up some rickety old stairs. Full of character and traditional pub feel, with Oxford university associated décor.
T. S.
Nice little pub. Very quiet when I visited but still a great atmosphere.
b. l.
The small mixed grill is absolutely wonderful a really memorable meal. The local real ales on the proper handpump are well chosen and good. The smoking tents are so good most people just relax in them and fetch drinks as required
A. C.
Great service under pressure when busy
P. J. N.
Still serving drinks in large covered and heated area adjacent to pub. Very friendly staff. Good stuff!
B. R.
The Bear is a lovely little pub in Oxford and its the oldest in Oxford. The people come from all over the world to see the tiys which are all over the walls and ceiling of the pub. The food is also excellent not too pricey but werth it and the staff are very helpful. If you like London Pride this is the best place to go in Oxford, it's still one of my favourite places to go.
Love the outdoors in the summer when it's Hot. Oxford is still my favourite place to go and eat and drink coffee and chat to new friends. 😎👍
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
J. R.
Great place, super friendly people, nice drinks, great food! The interior is a little on the smaller side but really comfy! Can highly recommend this place. Me, personally, will definitely go there more often!
T. S.
Very nice, old pub. Tiny inside so if you're set on dining here, I'd book ahead. Beer is around the market price for Oxford (expensive) and the food is OK. I had a burger which was, chips were good though. Come for the great atmosphere of the place as I can guarantee there aren't the many places like it.
D. E.
Historic, social and a great vibe. Enjoyed a good selection of beverages delivered by friendly staff. Very busy little pub, but enjoyed standing outside in the good weather.
K. H.
Lovely pub great staff but I have to ask: how can a pint of Peroni be £6.50? Most expensive Peroni anywhere .
T. O.
The oldest pub in Oxford. Great selection of ales, quaint bar with low ceilings and beams. Outside covered seating area and great live music every week. Good pub food and a friendly, cosy atmosphere.
M. T.
Ancient pub serving a great selection of beers. If you are over six foot you may have to duck down as the old ceiling is very low - the food lookes and smelled amazing but sadly we couldn't try it as there were no spare tables
S. K.
Awesome place to have drinks.
K. R.
Nice comfort style food, super attentive staff and cosy outdoor seating. Will definitely stop by again.
I. H.
Great little (emphasis on little!) pub just off the high street. Apparently oldest pub in the city, great collection of neck ties (ask at the bar!). Really friendly service and James the landlord was an exceptional host.
J. H.
I think this is probably my favourite pub in Oxford. It's apparently the oldest pub in the city, tucked down an alleyway (always a plus point in my book), and entering feels like stepping back in time. The ancient wooden walls, low ceilings, and interesting collection of school ties give it a very special atmosphere.
It's a Fuller's pub now which is a slight shame in terms of the variety of beers available, but they do seem to typically have at least one guest ale.
B. B.
A good unique Fullers pub especially the ESB. Lots of outside seating and heated.
J. L.
Been here every time I visit Oxford, it's a great friendly little pub with great ales.
S. “. C.
Ok and interesting. An old tavern
R. C.
Very small characterful pub,a collection of neckties in the back room. Food was good, cosy real fire in the front room. Book for food busy days. Fish and chips was good.
C. B.
Excellent, cozy little pub in a backstreet of Oxford right next to Christ Church and Oriel. Food is decent, and nice varied selection of local and national ales, as well as other drinks. Particularly great in the winter if you’re feeling cold.
A. B.
Great ales, plenty of room in fair weather.
Expect to pay a few shillings more for some of the best ales in the country
H. R.
The oldest pub in Oxford (supposedly) had a ok selection of lagers and ales and is in the center of Oxford. It's small so it gets crowed quickly and the food is nothing to amaze in my opinion. The walls are decorated with cutted ties. Worth a visit.
N. N.
Amazing atmosphere, the coal fireplaces and low ceilings add to the charm. Food is AMAZING and the beer is great!
Staff are fabulous! Definitely want to come back.
J. S.
Lovely pub, with a snug interior and good ale selection, we chose to sit outside and despite the weather being cooler it was perfectly pleasant thanks to the heating and overhead cover. One of my favourite "out of the way" pubs.
A. P.
Nice pub friendly staff great beers and food.
M. R.
One of the older pubs of Oxford, apparently. Very cosy! Provide the occasional evening (or morning) entertainment as well. E.g., traditional jazz played by musicians with a clear passion for the genre, some who seem to be older than the pub itself ;)
P. A.
By far the best steak pie in any pub in Oxford. Real pastry and good filling meat, not the gravy in pot with a puff of factory produced junk. Just get there early to get a seat. Oh, and the beer is pretty good too.
S. G.
Great Fuller's house. Quality ale well served by attentive staff. Great vibe and some live music in the cramped bar too. Locals pub, not on the tourist track.
L. X.
I've been a few times and the food is reasonably priced and very good. It has the usual selection of hearty pub dishes and although the menu is small, all the dishes we've had have been great. A favourite when we're in the area.
D. G.
It s a very old but very cool pub.
😉🍻🍻🍻
J. M.
If only the toilets didn't smell worse than a homeless mans' armpit.
In terms of location and appearance, the pub is very cool. I've eaten here a few times in the past and enjoyed it, but the toilets now smell so much that sitting anywhere in the dining room (4 tables - and there's only one more table in the pub that isn't in the dining room) is almost impossible. Any time the toilet door swings open, the smell of urine floods through the place. It shouldn't be such a problem for such a small venue, except that the toilets seem to be used publicly by a constant flow of people.
This isn't a one-off experience either... Get it fixed!
D. F.
Great place to meet Cubans and Mexicans
M. W.
Awesome food and staff. Burger and sausage roll yum! Great stop.
A. M.
The Bear Inn was good the food and service was great and it's such a lovely old pub you have to go there if you're in Oxford.
A. D. d. P.
Great place, very original, well manned with lovely staff, and you can feel you are in an old pub with some story behind. Decoration at the wall is made of cuts of ties of hundreds of people dating from quiet a few decades ago.
P. L.
Grab a stool by the fire and bask in the short-ceilinged glory of this traditional pub in Oxford. Throw a log on before you cheers your mates after a day of exploring the home of Western wisdom. But, don't cut your tie in half for a pint, as they prefer a credit card or wave of your phone.
M. T.
I wasn't attacked by a bear, but other guests were fending them off with bedposts - it was a very entertaining stay.
A few people lost their lunches, but the proprietor served everyone hot cocoa, all good!
E. T.
Lovely setting good service and friendly
V. D.
This off-the-beaten-path place was a lovely surprise. For finding it my first day in Oxford, this place had charm, great grub and atmosphere that made you feel you were thrown back to the 1200s, which is when it was apparently established. Sure, the ceilings are low and restrooms tiny but if you're looking for a spot to enjoy steak and ale with a side of chips this is the place to be. The manager is a lovely man, who greets you with this warm smile and English courtesy. This goes neck in neck with The Turf for me!
W. M.
Lovely little pub in the side streets of oxford. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Good food and drink. Will indefinitely visit when in oxford again.
a. b.
Lovely small and old quaint pub. Bar staff friendly and helpful. Beer quality spot on. Slight problem with food because of technical problem in kitchen
R. M.
The oldest pub in Oxford - in service since 1242!! That's nearly 800 years of serving the locals, the students and tourists alike.
It's a bit small but so what, you can have a good drink and enjoy the quirky collection of ties - dating back to the early 1900s and representing clubs in the Oxford area and, more recently, around the globe.
A visit to Oxford cannot be complete with a trip to "The Bear"
a. f.
Good atmosphere, great beers and friendly and helpful bar staff
V.
Beautiful small pub, rich with history with an excellent selection of drinks and exquisite food. Live music nights are special as the venue is so small, it's very intimate.
K. D.
We had to leave due to a covid positive test amongst the staff but they were brilliant how they handled it. Only 4 stars as I didn't get to stay long enough 🤘
U. A. S.
So good food and drinks
i. k.
Small inside but have an outdoor area. There was a trio playing outside and also patio heaters which made it quite pleasant. Meals OK but nothing special.
S. D.
The oldest pub......very quaint, good service, lovely atmosphere.
J. P.
Afternoon drink with my son. Staff made a real effort to sit us in the shade. Table ordering with phone and QR code.
K. C.
Great atmosphere, horrendously expensive and toilets are sub par. If you are in Oxford you have to go though.
S. M.
Brilliant pub great atmosphere. No music so you can meet and talk to people. Food bloody good too!
r. M.
Olde English establishment. Warm and friendly.
Now open air with covered seating and a couple of tables on the edge of the street. Great service as usual. Covid safe too..
M.
A must place to see in Oxford. Really interesting with great staff and beer. Be warned it is tiny so you may have to stand. Small price to pay for your visit.
h. a.
Very cool bar. We love the old rusty ambiente in there. Cool beer is very good but you can also drink your afternoon tea there. The decore ist really unique.
C. W.
One of a select few pubs to lay claim to the title of "Oxford's oldest", and probably the one with the best case for it. Squeeze in to the cosy, low ceilinged bar or admire the huge selection of slices of ties in the lounge. If you have a company, society or college tie and run out of beer money, offer it up as sacrifice for a free drink.
G. A.
This place is almost 800 years old! That in and of itself is enough for a good rating. The staff was unbelievably friendly and didn't pick on my tourist ineptitude! Open mic night was awesome
S. I.
Very tiny low ceiling pub with Fuller's on tap, current craft bottled beers on a chalkboard. Prices for food about on pad for central Oxford. Spring summer menu doesn't exactly favour an adventurous vegetarian though it's solid reliable stuff. I selected a ploughman's ciabatta with salad garnish. Heaped and tasty apart from an overload of relish. Always think these should be in a separate dish. Friends haddock was overbatteredin places and ham on egg n chips grill too thick. Ambience of the garden under the gazebo awning very relaxed and no hurry to move you on after eating. Pleasant break away from the madding crowd of Oxford shops and markets.
P. C.
Lovely little pub. Can get crowded when busy, but friendly staff, good food, nice range of drinks, and fascinating displays on the walls (and ceiling!).
C. P.
Great little pub. Good food and service. Staff very helpful and accommodating. Its a small pub so can get crowded. Might not be the best place for a big group unless you get there early.
M. B.
I went there on two consecutive nights with a group of colleagues and I really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and the very friendly staff. Good Ales selection too! Highly recommended
N. L.
The oldest pub in Oxford with a nice outdoor sitting. Good food and the "tie" collection is not to be missed. Food is really good. A must go when in Oxford.
A. H.
Great selection of hand pulled beer. Food looks good. Small back street pub well worth finding be back again.
A. P.
This place is tiny! I guess that's a part of the charm. It was packed when we went on a week night and there wasn't any place to sit. Apparently the stairs to the bathroom are trippy and worth experiencing.
V. P.
Apparently the oldest pub in the town. Low-ceiling rooms have charm. Good selection of ale. It is worthy to have pint or two.
N. S.
Lovely old pub, smells of fire and had great outdoor seating, but drinks were a little pricey. C'est la vie! Worth a look.
P. H.
Friendly bar staff, good pub grub and plenty of outdoor seating if inside is full. Well recommended. And one of the oldest pubs in Oxford!
S. H.
Great historic pub but I remember the fish and chips being better in pre Covid.
R. L.
Beer not in tip top condition
A. P.
Cod and chips authentically British and delicious. Crisp batter on outside, creamy fish on inside. Warm ale like the locals drink - strong stuff, phew!
D. M.
Good spot. Nice low roof. Plenty of outdoor seating.
S. N.
Oldest and most atmospheric pub in Oxford. The ties are a nice touch and searching through them to find places is enjoyable
C. M.
I loved the Bear Inn, with a good selection is ales and a warm inviting atmosphere just off the main road.
Difficult for large parties to get a seat, but good for smaller groups!
D. L.
Great location, outdoor seating, table service. Order via app. Friendly staff. lots of shade
T. C.
The Bear in is over 800 years old and Oxford's oldest pub. Space in here is at a premium but the limited amount on offer contributes to a general ambience and increases the chances of breaking into conversations with fellow punters. Highly recommended.
A. C.
This place is very good. The food is proper pub grub, and it has a lovely homely vibe. Although it can be a tad tight at peak times.
E. O.
Open air beer garden with a good selection of beers. There also are some heaters, though not for every table.
K. M.
Another of my Oxford haunts, collect stamped card for free beer, beer courtyard kept clean and tidy. Staff helpful and polite, good atmosphere.
