Reviews of The Wheatsheaf
J. D.
Nice local pub out of the way of the business in the city.
Waited about 10 minutes to be served dispite us being the only one's waiting to be served.
Drinks not bad at all, although the ice tasted dirty.
Decent prices.
Would return :)
T. N.
A cool grungy bar down a side street. There's a couple of dart boards and pool where everyone pays winner stays on
R. M.
Traditional pub.
Nice beers
Friendly service.
Good atmosphere.
L. S.
The pub downstairs is nice and cool. Lots of place to sit and stand. Upstairs concert hall is really nice, just enough size with small bar and we loved the metal concerts. But the sound was awfully lound, people cab damage their hearing there, what's wrong with that. And yes the tone tuner was so bad he couldn't get the voice right for any band. Would recommend it but bring ear plugs.
j. m.
Old pub down a narrow passage way. Or was quiet when we went, but worth a visit.
D. P.
Probably my favourite pub in Oxford, pool table, dart board, great mix of characters
H. L.
A proper pub with a juke box, pool table and super lovely staff. You're guaranteed warm and welcoming vibes
H. P.
A proper jazz dive. I don't say that in any derogatory sense, as the vibe is strong and melodic. The crowd is generally older than most other live venues in Oxford but it doesn't suffer for that in any way. Definitely worth a try
A. W.
Cracking local pub. Great night. Lovely people. If a little loud and outrageous. Some real characters. Not for the feint hearted!
G. L.
It is a great place to entertain yourself and grab a couple of drinks, maybe play some pool and darts.
Great place to socialize and it has a quick place to grab a cigarette.
Only thing is that it is in a very confined space, with only a couple of seats, I would say around 20 seats in total... but besides that great to stand and talk.
S. B.
It felt like going back in time but with a quirky contemporary feel. A real mix that worked well
C. W.
The only place on earth I’ve had to Google the definition of “we gucci”. The prior engagement felt like I’d been pegged by a cactus, but would still recommend.
M. S.
Proper boozer, best jukebox in Oxford and a pool table which is a rare treat for a city centre pub. One of the best places for a pint in Oxford
R. H.
Cheapest drinks I’ve found in Oxford, we could actually get in on a Saturday unlike some pubs, and the service was very prompt and efficient. They came over with a card machine after each round which I personally like because it means leaving isn’t a problem.
P. S.
Good pub, £4 a pint. Shame about the music venue.
B. R.
My fav it's an awsome place great beer hobgoblin awsome taste good quality
Y. A.
Amazing music and nice people and waiters. Please bring back the old jukebox
S. T.
Fast, friendly service. Lovely cold scoop of Foster's.
R. H.
Great pub. 12 time at the bar on a Saturday. Friendly staff not expensive for the middle of town
J. S.
Great pub to chill and have a few pints.
L. T.
Best pool in town centre, great people and a super chill place for a drink.
K. L.
Drinks were fine but little atmosphere.
M. S.
A good old back street pub. It's got a pool table with just enough room to play. Which is a real bonus in this cafe / bar / bistro world we live in. I would recommend for an old school pint and a game of pool or darts.
N. F.
Great rock pub. Pool table, dart board and upstairs music venue feeding the local indie music scene. Unfortunately restrictions from local council have been put in place restricting music volume to near a whisper and preventing any drinks from being taken out to the front of the pub at any hour. This is one of few bastions of rock culture left in the city centre and well worth your time if you enjoy a drink, pub games and some good rock'n'roll.
J. P.
The best hole in the wall bar in Oxford. Be prepared and forewarned. This is not the bar for everyone. People jockey to load the jukebox with their particular tastes, and a lot of that leans to the heavier, metal side of rock. The staff are get the job done people. Took my (American) Mom there and she asked for a glass of prosecco and the bartender looked at her like bugs were crawling out of her eyes. They do red or white, and no idea if it's a 'chardonnay' or not. The pool table is always in use and they have a winner stays on policy.
I consider this my 'local', and when I go out to drink, this is where I go. It is noisy, filled with tattooed, pierced, black clothes wearing people. It often has live music, and smoking is rampant in the crowded alley. If you are looking for cocktails and mood lighting, move along, this is not the place for you. If you want real people, good drinks, loud music, and a lot of fun...this is the place.
M. S.
It was my first visit to 'The Spin Jazz Club' which happens every Thursday night upstairs, best to book to avoid disappointment.
You couldn't get much closer to the musicians unless you were playing with them!
Tonight's guest was Art, a very accomplished saxophonist. I wouldn't have known his age from his playing or his looks.
I thoroughly enjoyed the set, the atmosphere and particularly the music.
You wouldn't have known that this four piece hadn't played together before, drums, double bass, keyboards and guitar entertained from start to finish and complemented each other well.
A new favourite venue, almost not sure if I should tell anyone else.
I will definitely be back 😁
T. T.
Love this place, one of the last bastion's of its kind. Great local characters (staff included) all combine in forming the bedrock and unique spirit of the one and maybe only remaining truelly spit and sawdust pub's.
Expect no airs and graces here, no one here cares what your postcode, what your bank balance is, or how great you think you are. The currency here is the richness afforded in banter or by domination through battle on the pool table.
s. 0.
Proper town pub and music venue still going strong in the 35 years I've been visiting!
M. (. B.
Decent local pub not in anyway a sterilised chain joint beer is good and if you want something rough around the edges this is the place
S.
Lovely little alternative pub. They do not serve food but make up for it with a (digital) jukebox, pool table, and a very friendly atmosphere.
M. L.
Quiet through day but good rock pub with good jukebox
S. G.
Great pub, with great beers. It has a good traditional atmosphere of an old English pub.
R. (.
Pros: The pub is warm, well lit and staff are nice, prices are very good and they have excellent pork scratchings!
Middles: The pub is very crowded, presumably because it's a nice pub, but it is very difficult to get to the bar sometimes.
Cons:
Too few speakers installed, so they set the volume high making some areas bad for trying to talk or relax.
single toilet for men that is very poor cleanliness because people dont use the urinal as its slightly less convenient to get too.
Toilet doesnt have sink area(located in different room), so people dont bother washing their hands.
C. E. -. G.
Dedicated to live music - particularly Metal, the bar is small and buzzy. The performance space upstairs has good sound , but slightly below average lighting, with a capacity of around 150 people. A convivial place to be as you wait for your band .
D. B.
Top Bar with rock/metal music playing in the background. :)
T. Q.
Always a wonderful place to visit. Great selection of ales, draught and spirits with good music and a laid back atmosphere. Bar staff are friendly and easy going, the other patrons are enjoying themselves. The bar has fantastic prices and regularly hosts bands either on the main floor or upstairs in the venue area.
A.
-Great
-Grungy
-Large
-Friendly staff
R. H.
Supreme rock pub. All the expected crowd, very friendly, great live shows and a good range of drinks that they keep well. Very friendly and efficient staff. Honest pub, run well and with no pretentions.
C. M.
Good pool table Good drink 🍸
N. C.
Great place for a Saturday afternoon beer. Friendly staff and good beer. Old school back street pub feel with a touch of neon and pool table.
T. C.
Strange blend of Jazz upstairs and Death Metal downstairs - worked for me! I met so many nice folks in here I could write a whole book about it! Went on a rainy Thursday night and just had a blast. Decent jukebox, variety of alcohol, and general good company, and because it's tucked down an alleyway, a fairly unique experience
D. I.
It is a famous place, favored by locals but don't expect upmarket interior. Very diverse crowd is much appreciated.
K. B.
A hidden gem in Oxford it has the feel of a local pub even though the customers are from all walks of life. Pool table and Darts and a good selection of ales at reasonable prices
J. C.
Real traditional historic pub in Oxford. Live bands and a good choice of drinks.
J. H.
Fantastic rock/metal pub. Old school spit and saw dust style in the best of way. Great staff that are up for a laugh and amazing mix of customers. Best pub in town.
M. W.
Proper old-school boozer! Good music, good beer, good people - what a pub should be like. Prices are reasonable and there are very few tourists in here. Surprised to find this gem in the centre of Oxford.
J. D.
Oxford's best city centre pub venue has seen early gigs from the likes of Metronomy, We Like Trains, Foals and Public Service Broadcasting. Indie favorites like Blacklisters, Deerhoof and Black Dice rub up against up and coming local bands, part bands and scene favorites. Downstairs, friendly staff run a busy rock pub with good beer and billiards. Pork Scratchings are available.
D. H.
A true real pub. More often than not it'll be a port of call when out in Oxford. The Agwa bombs are great (if dangerous!). Minus one star as once fell foul of the ridiculous 'no groups' rule.
R. D.
One of my very favourite pubs in Oxford. Genuine, friendly people, lovely ales and a relaxed, rocky atmosphere. Highly recommended! :-)
J. R.
Metal Rock band influenced kinda hip place. No place for suits, iPads and Soy Boyz. Darkly lit but has a great kinda "anything could happen here" vibe to it. You will be seeing...a lot of tatttoos and piercings everywhere on the body. Talking to interesting muso types. I like it. Took my american friends there.
t.
Bit smelly, bit rough, but I visited the venue above which was compact bijou and flipping loud! Good drinks, friendly atmosphere. Good venue.
P. S.
its one of the few grotty little pubs in oxford where you can just go and be yourself, it's not pretentious in anyway and they dont judge in there.
They also serve pretty strong doom bar, furthermore - the upstair area can be rented for private parties in the centre of oxford!
S. C.
Seemed to have 2 real ciders but staff with no clue. Beer selection looked OK and I guess there's never gonna be any shortage of jackasses that will drink the bilge like Guinness that's always basically the same everywhere...
K. D.
Great little 'real' pub even in virus times, great break from the touristy/foody/studenty bars
R. S.
I watched Oxford Imps shows for several times in this pub. Great show but a very small place! Many people have to stand. I wish they do it somewhere else bigger.
J.
Great atmosphere and great choice of drinks. All very reasonably priced too. Really good and diverse choice of live music as well!
L. I.
Very friendly rock/alternative pub with great prices.
P. L.
My opinion. The only "pub, pub" left in Oxford. Live music, dart board, juke box. Live music both chargeable and free. No cooked food! Just a pub
A. W.
Fantastic hidden bar, found it by accident, great music, lovely staff.
I. W.
Great pub. One of the hidden gems of Oxford. Good beer and pub food with friendly helpful staff.
The have live music here too.
A. m.
Brilliant pub. Proper pub, juke box an everything. 😁. Guy behind the bar today, absolute diamond. Will definitely come back.
J. B.
We got exactly what we expected from the reviews. Down to earth rock pub, low prices, nothing fussy. Locals were friendly and staff were good.
R. M.
Felt very comfortable as soon as I walked in,good beer, decent prices, and not many pubs left with a pool table and darts boards, nice little pub.
C. M.
Not quite a good as it was in my student day's here - but then nostalgia has a way of distorting reality - still a good welcoming pub with fine beers!
T. V.
Good authentic place, real English pub, who likes this sort of bars.
Sundays live music and some other days, to be checked.
R. H.
My regular haunt. Lively. Good people. Great music. Pool table. Dart board. And the only proper pub in Oxford Centre.
T. L.
Best place in Oxford if you like motorcycles and playing pool. Really friendly staff to
S. U.
The only pool table in central Oxford, good ales, good rock jukebox, occasional live music, good atmosphere. Now that the Gloc' has 'gone', the 'Sheaf has become a mainstay when I am in Oxford.
D. D.
Friendly, lively pub in the heart of Oxford with live music on Sundays - for nostalgia fans the decor hasn't changed since my last visit 40 years ago
T. E.
The Spin is one of the best and intimate jazz clubs in the UK. Thursday nights. Great venue for music
H. B.
Small, dark, bands have to load in up a flight of stairs. Terrible lighting on stage. Pub ok but was there for a band not drinking.
F. D.
Hard rocker/metalhead pub. My favourite place in Oxford, great drinks at good prices and a plethora of patrons to have great conversations with
A. A. J.
Friendly atmosphere with a great live venue upstairs....typical city centre pub prices...but a very good pub...you could do worse believe me....
M. R.
Just OK. Friendly bartender, chill place. Lacked the charisma to make me come back though
A. F.
Good muso pub with a great live space upstairs. Loud, grubby but good atmosphere for all age groups.
B. H.
Some bar staff will keep you waiting when they are serving regulars or friends. I have experienced this with the American girl today.
M. J.
The best pub in oxford and the staff are absolutely amazing and friendly
e. b.
One of my fav in Oxford
m. y.
Came upon this cool spot by wandering aimlessly through the alley. Made fast friends w/a few friendly Oxfordians. Politics and beers, a civil discourse.
C. A.
Fantastic pub and great music venue. Good selection of drinks and great staff

Nice little pub away from busier streets, they need to advertise the rules for using the pool table though
R.

Mediocre beer. Reasonable jukebox. Potentially good music upstairs. I'm probably not their target audience.
T. H.
An excellent pub and small venue, lots of great events and reasonably priced drinks.
D. l.
My favorite Pub in Oxford (nice people, nice music, nice place and nice place) I from Portugal and unfortunately we don't have a pub as this.
E. L.
Very rustic pub and well known for new bands in Oxford, cheap, good, but definitely not posh.
J. H.
Proper pub, proper drinks, cheaper than standard Oxford prices. Worth reading the graffiti in the toilets.
