Reviews of The White Horse
G. D. (.
Enjoyed the experience of being in the Inspector Morse pub. Very cheap drinks and good selection. Pub is in need of a revamp and bringing back to life but worth a visit.
C. M.
Definitely a nice pub in the heart of Oxford, comfortable with friendly staff. It’s a small pub, can get crowded, but quiet enough to talk normally. Has many local ales.
Pretty good for food too. I had the Game Pie. While not as flavourful as I was expecting, it was very hearty and kept me full for ages!
S. D.
Fabulous place with a lovely atmosphere and excellent food.
It's a great shame that all the Morse memorabilia has been taken down from the walls. Many people still go there just for the Morse experience and heard many people saying how disappointed they were.
At least the Randolph has kept the Morse Bar and memory alive.
J. S.
Interesting pub, linked to Morse. Limited wine choice. Ok for a drink only.
R. B.
Its not a very big place at all, its obviously been here for a very long time, and has the lingering feel of things past, one gets the idea, the world moves on and this place stays the same. It has a wonderful patina, and the old fashion smell of a pub, it has a cosy genial, atmosphere..the beer was well kept, and its clients had a genteel air, its an older persons sort of a place, with its own old fashioned charm.
Morse was filmed here...his spirit is still strangely indicative of what the place is about...quiet reflection, and conversation...
M. C.
Lovely little boozer, great beers and best snacks. Friendly staff. Def with a try if you're in Oxford centre
V. P.
That was some LOVELY pub food. Absolutely delicious :’) everything was seasoned and made just right.
L. K.
We were there for a drink one late evening, just before closing time. Frindly staf -
C. L.
Very nice hotel in a lovely village. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Meals were of good quality from a varied menu. Our room was clean, comfortable and well furnished. It was above the bar so some sound until closing time. Also noise from water system early morning but neither was a problem to us. It may be a problem to light sleepers but other rooms wouldn't be affected.
S. G.
A very small but utterly wonderful pub. Squished between two Blackwells, the perfect place to read the books you buy.
B. S.
Great experience today in the White Horse. Limited space but barman looked after us and made sure we got a space shortly after. Wayland's Smithy beer was brilliant as was the first. All five of us loved our time there. And of course, Morse and Endeavour was filmed her
m. y.
A cozy little place that's been around since the 16th century. The roast beef and fish n chips were great, and so were the beers.
I. M.
Compact traditional historic pub with connections to Morse and other TV programmes. Next door to Blackwells bookshop so ideal for a pint while looking at the books you just bought.
A couple of outdoor tables.
Decent food.
J. M.
This was a really nice pub, just ashame theirs no disabled entrance
W. B.
White Horse bitter was ok. Choice limited. Place was almost empty mid Sunday afternoon but packed lunchtime. No jacket spuds. A must if a Morse Lewis fan. Used often in filming.
F. S.
Always been a great city centre pub.
L. G.
Good beer, but not cheap.
J. G.
Doesn’t have pimms or hot drinks. Other than that, very good.
P. M.
Fabulous waiters ,quality food and atmosphere
F. S.
Always been a great city centre pub.
J. M.
Delicious food, great atmosphere and lovely attentive staff, very reasonably priced, would return.
J. X. 0.
Cozy little place for a home cooked meal or just a drink... Friendly staff. Great decor. Perfect.
E. B.
Great pub located in the centre of Oxford on Broad Street next to Blackwells book shop. Really nice place with an old vibe and great for any Morse fans as most of the oub scenes were filmed in there. Good beers and the pies are proper with great pastry and chips (all for £10 on Rishi's deals)
Still carrying on the Mon, Tue, Wed deals!
Small space inside but they've added more seating out front to cope with social distancing.
J. S.
A really good place for a beer and to enjoy the traditional Oxford atmosphere.
M. D.
Compact public house with loads of character and good selection of ales. Few tables out front for those who like to brave the elements. Oh and if you are a fan of Morse, then this would be a place to drop into
S. P.
Fantastic Bar And Food. Fantastic Friendly Staff.
V. D.
Great pub, great atmosphere, great service, great location.
D. F.
Small but excellent pub. Lots of Morse photos as several episodes had scenes there. I was once in a team photo on its wall but now replaced, rightly by John Thaw
J. O.
A classic pub in Oxford. The place is very cozy, but small. Staff is friendly and you will inmediatly feel welcome. I went for a lunch at midday and food was OK, but not great. Selection of beers is OK if you are looking for something classic.
Overall, you feel transported into an old-fashion style of English pub.
P. J.
Very traditional Oxford pub, met my wife to be here after reading at the Bodleian. Here's an amusing picture of film crew parking with the White Horse in the back ground
P. M.
It was ok but the bar staff weren't too friendly. I asked for a pint and a half and hot 2 pints. Not sure what went wrong. Won't be returning in a hurry.
W. B.
Always good beer!
This pub has been a favourite of mine for a long time. It's small and friendly, always serves excellent ale, and does decent pub fare. Quirky and interesting, including its Inspector Morse heritage, it's well worth a visit.
J. G.
Lovely little pub very friendly staff
G. S.
Disappointed that there was no Morse memorabilia but an ok pub.
V. H.
Hard not to give this little atmospheric pub 5 stars. The service and staff are absolute joy! Plenty of local and branded alcohol (beer) that you can have a go at. We also had "dinner" there which was the fish and chips classic... I don't think I have had a more delicious dish that at this place. Definitely recommend this if you ever find yourself in Oxford and in need of drink and food!
T. M.
If you are in town this is a great location, excellent service and staff
A. A.
I’m a student from abroad and I love this pub. It is comfy, nice and it feels like I’m drinking in my living room <3
A. T.
Lovely cosy little pub. Usually got some nice beers on pump. Menu etc feels like it has got rather overly tourists in recent years.
W. R.
Great atmosphere, delicious food, fun place for an out of Towner like myself
R. W.
Great combo deal on coffee and cake. And dare you risk touching the ‘cursed’ broom?!
A. S.
A cosy pub. Good food. Thought Endeavour could step in every moment
D. N.
Very lovely. We visited for Sunday lunch drink on a cold day, nice and warm inside.
Quite a small bar - with good choice of beers. There was food, but we did not try. Lots of Morse photos etc on the walls. I recommend this pub as a genuine local experience for any Oxford visitor.
M. R.
Nice fish and chips. Fast service.
L. G.
Friendly, busy but quiet enough to have a conversation. Beer very well kept, although not quite IPA ish enough for me. They were serving food which looked nice but we didn't have time for dinner.
M. D.
Great pub, nice real ales, specially the oxford gold. Food great the steak ale pie. Staff very are friendly, was speak to one bar man (can’t rememebr name) but had black tattoo arm, a credit to your team for sure, top guy.
T. v. H.
Nice and Cosy pubs with a good arrangement of (local) beverages and decent pub food.
m. m.
Cosy charming pub in the centre of Oxford which was one of the filming locations for Morse, service was excellent we didn't have to wait for our food and the staff were very friendly. I would definitely recommend for traditional English food and atmosphere
L. D.
Really nice if you are a lover of British food. The place is warm and small, very traditional and popular. Staff is really friendly and kind. I tried the Bunny Chow and, although it was too big for me, I found it tasty and delicious. A must in Oxford
D. J.
Small pub tucked way with other stores. Great fish and chips and Crab salad. Little crammed given how old it is and seats are not that comfortable - but overall great experience. Friendly staff. Seating is very close together.
J. R.
Small pub. Good grub.
C. S.
Traditional pub with good ales, mulled wine and some good food. The game pie was just amazing, less the vegetables and smashed potatoes. The location is perfect if you want to visit Oxford, being right next to the main spots like libraries and museums
S. C.
A great little pub. We popped in for an early lunch and for that reason found the place virtually empty but for one other person. Shortly afterwards it filled out very quickly as it's got great food (had the Fish n chips) and good ales. If Inspector Morse is your thing (and why wouldn't it be? "Lewiiis!") you'll also spot a few of the photos taken of one of the episodes shot there. Very comfortable and very traditional. Good service too.
L. G.
Friendly staff and a great cloudy cider
K. R.
Lovers of Morse and Lewis will be delighted here.
H.
Small and cozy little pub in the best location of Oxford. Very nice fish and chips and chicken pie!
j. A.
A nice little spot. Very tasty food, and plenty of good drinks options, it's a lovely place to be. Staff are a little hit and miss, but generally good, and it is a little cramped in there sometimes. Lovely decor, and while the outdoor space isn't much to shout about, it's good that they have made the effort.
S. U.
One of Oxford's great pubs. Narrow and wooden and creaky and beer-scented. A good selection of inexpensive ales in good condition at all times of year. I've been drinking here for many years, and never had a dodgy pint.
It is a small place, but that does not make it any less worth a visit. It can, very quickly, become crowded.
There is no jukebox or piped musak or TV, so you will have to talk to people, which means that, more often than not, you will an interesting stranger or three, who, this being Oxford, could be from just about anywhere in the world.
The atmosphere is always friendly, and this charming pub has the added benefit of being located on one of the world's most beautiful streets, opposite Wren's Sheldonian Theatre.
D. G.
Great little cozy pub with great food and drink selection.
J. M.
Nice ancient pub on the Broad. Good selection of real ales.
R. M.
Although a very small quaint pub, the atmosphere is amazing and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Also the seasonal mulled wine is absolutely amazing, one of the best homemade mulled wines I’ve had.
R. P.
Good choice menu and very good service .No need for words every one knows about the White 🐎
J. H.
Very pleasing to find a free house in Oxford, when so many of the pubs now are being bought up by chains. The beer is very well kept here, and the staff are clearly quite passionate about it. Also an attractive interior, interestingly slightly below street level.
S. S.
Very small but cosy pub in the heart of Oxfords colleges. It serves good beer and food but be warned as it is quite small you may be hard pushed to find a seat so get their early !
A. W.
Good pub loads of character. & Linked to the TV dramas Morse & Lewis. Limited choice of beer this trip.
F. R.
Perfectly placed within easy walking if the Sheldonian and the Ashmolean, and flanked either side by Blackwell's, the White Horse serves tasty food and a welcoming ambience. The pub has been used for several TV series locations, including Morse and Lewis. Be warned, it's tiny and narrow and there are steps from the street so access is restricted, but if you can visit, it's worth it!
J. L.
Fantastic place with amazing food and very friendly staff! I even asked for cod without batter and they made me one that tasted delicious! 5 stars for great service and very tasty food! Will definitely come back!
J. B.
Atmospheric, little drinking hole. IPA on tap.
H.
Beautiful location and food, however as other reviews have stated with the exception of the young girl who served us, the customer service skills could do with improvement. A smile and general courtesy would certainly help to improve reviews.
P. N.
Traditional british food in a nice pub in central Oxford, most convenient location to get a great lunch. Beer was very good also.
S. A.
Always pop in here when out drinking in Oxford, Its a proper old traditional
pub that also serves great food from friendly staff.
M. B.
My old haunt. Lovely pub, unspoilt and full of atmosphere
S. P.
Nice pub good beers but food poor and staff didn't care. When they asked if food was alright and we said no (hog roast on batch etc very fatty and overcooked ) he just said Oh and did nothing.
M. G.
Nice cosy pub that does food
S. R.
What a fantastic little pub, great service and lovely food. Situated in the historical centre of Oxford it really is the perfect place to eat.
M. W.
A nice pub in central Oxford. Small and warm inside, but has a nice atmosphere to it. Food and drinks were prompt and staff were nice. Good place for a quick pint and a cheap bite).
J. M.
Lovely pub. Wonder food and the selection of Ales is one of the best in Oxford. The only down side is lack of seating, which can not be helped.
D. H.
Good service & bar-staff👍
C. S.
The staff are awesome, the venue is cosy and the beer is, well, beery.
L. M. K.
Always lovely to eat and drink here. My day off tradition to go have my veggie 'fish' n chips lunch there.
A. N.
A cosy pub with terrific bar staff, an interesting television story and tasty food. Although this pub is very small it's got a perfect 'oldie woldie' feel to it.
A. L. S. &. M.
Best cheapest close and clean
N. C.
Absolutely fabulous food setting and staff. Food was fantastic can’t recommend highly enough well worth our visit 👍😍
E. M.
No music at all; a bit touristic in my opinion but the food was good generally. It is a good pub overall, but not excellent in my personal opinion. Kind service
T. H.
Delicious halfpint of local ale, friendly bar keep. Was a bit empty when I went, very historic looking place
J. C.
Excellent beer, relaxing atmosphere, good food
A wonderful place to spend a couple of hours
M. M.
Lovely little pub filled with Inspector Morse fans and public in general..the owners were great telling us stories about the show and we enjoyed the food and the beer..great location highly recommended for a pint and scratchings..ha ha ha
J. L.
A must pub in Oxford. It's nothing remarkable aside from the immense history and token atmosphere. It's small and cosy and a great place for an evening chat with the mates.
A. T.
Nice location in the heart of Oxford.
M. P.
Small, cosy pub right in the centre of town. Decent beers. An enjoyable space to sup a brew, but you may find it's already full!
C. C.
This place hasn't changed much in 40 years, maybe because it's quite simply a very good place for light lunch type food based around salads, baked potatoes, quiches etc
C. R.
Lovely couple running the place! Had yum halloumi and chips, great spot over the road from the library!
S. R.
Good range of local ales.
L. T.
Cosy little place, always friendly, nice and snug. Decent prices. Inspector Morse was filmed here. Full of character.
A. U.
Great place for pub food, however the selection of beers isn't very impressive, mostly popular brands and white horse brews
L. P.
Great pub, built within the traditional feel of Oxford.
S. H.
Friendly, cosy, staff fabulous. Had a lovely lunch in the first day they opened following covid lockdown.
R. B.
Very cramped, but has an interesting vibe. Average beer and food selection. It's cool to see once or twice, but not on a regular basis.
A. M.
Tired looking pub, ok food, liked the Morse memorabilia.
D. P.
Wonderful atmosphere. Nice people. Mulled wine! Great broom story.

Given the location and price this was disappointing. Beer good, but mac cheese a bit bland. Great location however.

I can pretend I'm in an episode of Morse/Lewis/Endeavour [delete as applicable]. Beer, a Timothy Taylor Landlord was excellent.
S. A. (.
Fantastic proper pub. Morse drank here in an early episode. Real ale and atmosphere on tap.
M. R.
A small alehouse next to Blackwells bookshop, a favourite watering hole of "Inspector Morse" 5 cask beers on offer, wood panelling and floor throughout, the look is slightly spoiled by the new pine topped tables, which is not in keeping with what they replaced.
A. R.
(Translated) You can sit inside and outside. Friendly ladies serve the tap inside. Near Blackwell's bookstore.

(Translated) I went around 5 in the evening. It was early, so we had about 4 customers. There are people who have both men and women and families with children. However, the inside is narrow. It began to get crowded around 5:30. The food is not bad. The salad was delicious. Sausage was good that spice worked.

(Translated) If you go to Oxford, you should go. The tradition is deep and you can taste the kesk ale. The design is also unique under the ring, and I heard that such a building can not be removed. It was deep in history. There are some beers from Oxford, so it's better to eat them than any other Guinness beer. The staff were very friendly and let me take pictures inside myself. There was no racism and the bathroom was very spacious and comfortable. I only had a short time here, but next time I'll have a variety of beers and food. The prestigious pub in Oxford thought there would be a lot of stories and discussions going on here, some of which would have changed the world, so I thought it was worth visiting.

(Translated) Good food. It offers a traditional menu that if on the one hand offers the same dishes (in the week in which I frequented it daily) from another it offers the certainty of what you can eat. Correct prices. Fast and friendly service. Irreproachable. Well frequented both by locals and tourists. The restaurant has a long history and therefore a long tradition. It is one of the few places left unchanged over time in Oxford. Its history has curious sides and can be read in the paintings hanging on the walls. Thus we understand the reason for the symbol hanging from the ceiling and from the words written below on a beam. A television series was set in the room. Which? Look at the pictures on the walls .....
In my opinion it is worth trying.

Cibo buono. Quale? Guarda le foto alle pareti .....
Secondo me è da provare.

It may not be easy to eat because the seat is not wide
I visited on Sunday, and I heard from the host where I was staying, but there is a place selling Sunday roast on Sundays only.
There was a menu that I just sold as a chef special. This was a Sunday roast.
You can choose one of meat, pork, beef or chicken.
You can add an additional dessert here, plus one pound, you can choose one of the desserts to eat
The price was 12 to 13 pounds based on the Sunday roast, plus 1 pound if you added dessert
The taste is a homemade food, and it would be better to go without special expectations.
Fish and chips may also be selected as pannies.
