Generally the Penguin is a lovely, friendly pub with a great atmosphere and I go there regularly for that reason. I decided to host my works Christmas party here this year and it was absolutely fantastic! We were given the entire restaurant area for our party and the staff went above and beyond with amazing decoration and delicious food! They spent hours getting everything ready and with all the little special touches it looked so fancy, especially when they came around with canapés and welcome drinks. Everyone at work was super impressed and my boss said it was the best party we've had! I honestly can't recommend this place enough... If you want a party with a great space, friendly, professional staff and amazing food, this is the place you need. Thank you Dan, Beth, Chris, Danielle, Amy and everyone else in the team!

Went here for my mother's wake, the staff were extremely professional and friendly..the buffet was excellent. We're definitely going to visit it under better circumstances, couldn't fault it in the slightest. There's also a dog friendly outside beer garden, thank you to the proprietors for helping to make a sad day tolerable x

A lovely Friday evening was spent here, staff very friendly and atmosphere nice. Quite quiet for 6pm certainly was not full. Choose where to sit as there was plenty of choice. Looks like there is a limited menu in place not a great deal of choice but overall for the price and quality we were all very satisfied with the meal. Drinks are on the steeper side but this is a family run business and not a chain. If your looking for a chilled evening out with good quality pub food then this is certainly worth a visit.

We had a wake here Friday, everything was perfect. They let us decorate exactly as wanted, they did a huge buffet and food was incredible. All the staff were amazing and the new owners are so fantastic. Covid-19 safe and I can't recommend enough, so happy and welcoming, 150% recommend to everyone!!! They did lots of little extras and always went above and beyond no matter what! This is my local too and I always feel comfortable coming in alone for a quick pint, everyone is always fantastic. They alow children and dogs so it's always the perfect place to pop in.

Have just been here with my daughter, and what a lovely place to visit, the people have now been running the penguin for 2 years, so pop in and say hello and have a pint of Korev, and a corrnation chicken salad roll, either with chips and or ready salted crisps, really nice setting with a great family friendly feel.

This pub has had a refurbishment since the days of The Tap and Barrel. It is fresh and clean but still cosy, with friendly and helpful staff. The Sunday roast that my party of 7 had was excellent, and the selection of beers and ciders is good.

Dan was amazing, ran us through everything on the day we went to book. On the actual day, everything ran smoothly, the buffet was excellent, and plentiful. Good value for money. Just had a Sunday roast at the Penguin lounge with friends. The new management are friendly, helpful and welcoming. Now the food. Wow. The brisket was so tasty and perfectly cooked I didn't need a knife. Vegetables were amazing and the roast potatoes were sublime. Excellent home-made Yorkshire puddings and gravy. I wanted to eat more but the portion size is so spot on that I couldn't fit any more lovely food in. Compliments to the chef and his awesome team. Will definitely recommend this place for it's fantastic food. Thankyou Penguin lounge for an impressive and very Competitively priced meal.

The food was alright, the mains I would say were good value for money as portion sizes were very large. However, we also ordered from the sharing section of the menu and whilst the chicken wings and calamari were good sized portions, the "garlic foccacia" comprised of 2 slices of baguette with dipping olive oil, such a small portion I would not say was worth £4. Overall the customer service was alright however in an empty pub we were sat on the smallest table in the middle of the floor whilst there were lots of comfy booths available. A nice pub with good customer service and good tasting food but could be better value for money

Have just had a meal with my family here for mothers day. I had the roast beef and can honestly say it was the best roast dinner I have had. In fact everyone enjoyed their food. The puddings were to die for. The staff were very friendly and nothing seemed to much trouble on what must have been a very busy day. We will definitely go back and will highly recommend to all.

A fantastic pub that's friendly and welcoming. The food is lovely. And it has brill events such as karaoke and quiz nights. The staff are really great and I instantly felt at ease. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them. It's always clean and tidy and has a small car park which is a bonus. My first visit here and I really enjoyed it. Staff were really friendly and the atmosphere drew in a nice crowd. I am not local but I plan to visit again when I return to see family. A well presented meal we both had a Sunday roast the veg was freshly prepared with a prepared gravy from the meat juices and was amply sufficient. Downside the meat which was beef was slightly tough a steak knife may have made the enjoyment of the meal a little less difficult. Worth another visit.

This is the best pub I have been into in years! The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable on the products they sell. I am gluten intolerant and once I explained this to the waitress she talked me through the menu and all of the food that I would be able to eat. There is lots of food available on the menu for people with coeliac disease which is quite rare in the pub food industry. The Landlord Lee made us feel very welcome and it was clear to see all of the employees enjoyed working there from the happy and friendly atmosphere. If anyone is in this area and are either looking for a good meal, or just a quiet drink The Penguin Pub is definitely the place to go. I will be back when down in Plymouth again.

Very cosy, dog friendly pub. I was there on a Saturday for dinner with my girlfriend and we both were very please with the quality of the food, warmth of the staff and the selection of beers. It has a pool table and you can play darts. I would strongly recommend this pub, save the pubs!

Popped in last night for a drink with my Husband, and unfortunately it was very cold and made us feel uncomfortable, the pub doesn't seem to have the same happy atmosphere as previously experienced, such a shame.

Ok so it's are 2nd visit to the penguin our first Experience wasn't the best, we could of put it down to covid and the stress that we are all feeling at that moment.. Dan kindly invited us back to have a meal and they really turned it around for us!!! Lovely food especially the Squared.. staff are very friendly and helpful... we will definitely come back.. The drinks are far, far to expensive. The pub was really lovely but cold, the windows were drafty so we had to play darts with our coats on. The local customers were really nice, the only other thing to spoil the evening was that the landlord wasn't willing to move the pool table further away from the dartboard.

Service was very slow despite not being particularly busy but we were offered a free round of drinks to compensate. The food also wasn't great but we received a fresh batch of roast potatoes and the missing Yorkshire pudding eventually arrived. We ordered cheesecake for dessert but actually received a cheesecake base with a half melted cream mess on top. I think food is left too long sitting under the heat lamps before being served as mains tasted "re-heated" and obviously the desserts were melted! We were told there was a problem with the ovens but it would have been helpful to be told that at the start to manage expectations. Overall verdict, the food is overpriced for the standard of food and service that you receive.

The Penguin has excellent service, food is of a high standard with that little bit extra on top to go the extra mile. I have recently arranged two events with the penguin and they've come up trumps on both very different occasions. They provided a competitive rate for a wake and provided space for a family reunion on new year's eve. I cannot fault their standard of care and dedication to customer needs.

Good quality food, fair prices, decent service, adequate car parking facilities, good toilet facilities, outdoor seating if required. A 'proper' dining area away from the bar. The chairs are sturdy and comfortable. I've been a couple of times now and this is the bench mark that I compare all the other gastro-pubs I visit.

The Penguin Pub is definitely somewhere to go if you want amazing food, a lovely setting and great service. Lee and his team do a fantastic job, really look after their customers and get involved in the community. If you want a good night out and like quizzing go along on the first Thursday of every month, make a night of it and sample their menu before straining the old grey matter. I have just been to the Penguin for a Sunday roast and can say without fear that it was the best meal I've ever had in Plymouth or many other places. I had the beef brisket and my friend had the trio of meats both were out of this world tbh and I have no idea why they gave me a knife as I only used it to cut the potatoes as the beef was as tender as it comes. I definitely roccomend it and will certainly eat there again.

The pub is a lovely place. Clean and tidy. Good selection of drinks. Bright with its own character. Nice music nights and when visiting during the day I found their food to be excellent. I do have one problem though that spoils it. Despite the advertised opening times, during the summer after work i found at around 10pm they would abruptly decide to close. If I had been there for 10 mins I would find myself racing my drink and not feeling chilled and comfortable at all after my day at work. On two occasions I came to be told they were closing long before the 11pm closing time and had to turn around and walk back home, wasting my trip. Then tonight I went well before half 8 (sunday) with the stated opening times on their site saying it was open to find it wasnt. Once again wasting my trip. I would have this place as my local if I could rely on it, but I dont think I will waste my time anymore with friends on an evening unless they can be more reliable with their opening hours. A real shame. I hope they can sort this out. Other than that I think this place is really nice when im in there and it's open. I will be happy to rereview them again later should this change. Really nice mains and good drink options, friendly staff too. Not keen on the desert, the presentation was unappealing (on a slate slab , with a smear of custard and a splat of jam?). Had the crumble and the creme brule. The crumble and shortbread that came with the brule were not sweet at all, like no sugar was added. Would say that's a fluke, but second time of trying the crumble and the second time that it tasted dry and floury. Will likely be back, but will skip desert.

Lovely, wonderful, trustworthy people. They kept my iPad safe when I lost it outside and returned it to me when I went back to ask the next day. He did however, not just hand it over to me straight away, but asked me for my personal code to my iPad and put it in to the pad as I said it, just to make sure it was actually mine and that I wasn’t a scammer! Which is also amazingly honest with intent of getting the property back to the right person. Obviously, it was mine and I was so happy to get it back!! Big love to the Penguin xxx

Me and my friends/family have visited the Penguin since it first had a refurb a couple years back, and haven't stopped coming since! One of my favourite pubs in Plymouth, so family friendly. You can play board games, Poole, darts etc, or one of my favourites the giant jenga! And the food is delicious.
