Reviews of Black Horse
T. A.
Grade ll camera national inventory pub.4 rooms. tiled bar 5 real ales on. Friendly good staff.
A. G.
Best pub in Preston, possibly Lancashire, maybe even England! Well kept constantly changing beers, great interior, good guys behind the bar. I thought I was in a top Edinburgh pub until they charged 20% less for a pint. There's even a real fire in the snug.
G. W.
Always worth a trip through the doors here: there's a beautiful ceramic tiled horseshoe bar, several snugs to cosy up in; very pleasing glass work and, not least, a good selection of interesting beers served by pleasant staff.
Mention should also be made of the pies, which, whilst I think are not made on site, are just what the doctor ordered around your fourth beer.
Can commend.
r.
Beer was fantastic, its really nice to get a good pint of old Tom. The pub itself is great, wood and glass panelling, there always seems to be quite a relaxed atmosphere. It's I'm the last edition of the good pub guide I have, and deservedly so.
D. T.
Classic pub with a good range of real ales. Quick and friendly service.
J. T.
Spectacular historic interior. Great to see mild on tap.
L. K.
Great traditional pub with beautiful interior. 8 cask ales on, very nicely conditioned and served. Bar snacks include pork scratchings and pork pies.
J. B.
Historic Victorian tiled pub & a historic tiled/wooden bar serves bottled beers, real ale beers from Robinsons & 3/4 guest ales mainly from Titanic & another brewery. Serves pork pies/crisps & nuts. Has a jukebox & can get quite busy especially Saturday afternoon /teatime.
A. C.
Travelled from Nottinghamshire to visit this historic Preston pub and was not disappointed . Superb Victorian building both externally and internally that has escaped the mindless development that has befallen and ruined many similar boozers throughout the country. Immediately made to feel welcome by a very friendly and informative bar manager who had an excellent selection of well kept ales. Pity we missed the ‘butter pie’ night but well worth the trip. Thanks cha!
S. N.
Great pub with lots of history, a proper bar, the oldest 1 in Preston I believe 🤔, with classic old school snugs and atmosphere.
The beers damned good too!
S. M.
Amazing atmosphere, really kind and funny staff, great drinks.
E. S.
One of the most historically fantastic pub interiors in the whole of the country. A visit to Preston would just simply be incomplete without an hour's refreshment in this amazing building.
T. A.
A great find! Several real ales (including Plum Porter) and spectacular internal architecture. A proper pub!
P. R.

J. S.
Probably my favourite pub in Preston. Stunning victorian decor, and good beers to boot.
S. K.
Beautiful pub with great cask ales by Robinsons brewery. This place has incredible atmosphere due to its well preserved interior and makes you feel like you are back in 19th century.
A. B.
Fantastic old original pub with excellent, friendly staff and punters.
G. H.
Quiet and friendly place to visit, good selection of cask ales and spirits for all tastes
W. J.
This has stood the test of time, world wars, epidemics, social change, buildings knocked down and ugly new buildings around it..but it still survives,, us Prestonians know all about the black horse..A real pub and one of a handful left in preston..great beer and its not a trendy arty pub..the loos are the same as they were decades ago. And the interior is even older..go and enjoy a pint nxt to the 🔥 ...friendly place and relax..
K. T.
Excellent traditional pub with many original features. It's how ale houses used to look! It was a pleasure sinking a few beers in amazing surroundings. Brilliant choice of cask ales, friendly staff. A must visit place day or night!
M. B.
A great pub, plentiful choice of real ale and a landlord who appears to care about his beer and his customers

K. H.
Mutually convenient place to catch up with an old friend. Turned out to be a great choice...good beers, friendly, efficient and knowledgeable staff. Plus a great architectural experience - please - never modernise this place. (123 years old!)
D. F.
Old style pub with plenty of real ales. Good service and excellent beers.
H. D.
Pretty much the best real ale choice of the beer guide pubs in Preston. Great land lord who was very happy to tell us the history of the place and let us wonder around and take photos. Try and go a quiet times so you can check out the original features. Definitely recommended
G. L.
Wow, what a fabulous place. You don't get places like this anymore. Great range of great beers all in tip top condition too.
P. N.
Great bar untouched interior
T. C.
A lovely old pub which deserves five stars for the interior, but unfortunately the blue haired barmaid was miserable as sin. Before we'd opened our mouths to order it was clear that customers were a burden to her.
I. E.
Great pub, nice friendly atmosphere, excellent beer.
S. G.
Cracking pint of plum porter. Love the old surroundings. Friendly bar staff.
C. B.
Great place to socialuse. Good selection of ales and very friendly staff. Highly recommended

J. T.
Excellent real ales, in the most ornate pub in Preston.
The landlord also went above and beyond to look after my elderly companion who fell outside the pub, many thanks.
J.
A very well run and maintained pub in a nice historic building. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Good selection of beer and so far the best pint of Guinness in Preston.
C. S. C.
We used the upstairs event room for a 30th birthday.
Great communication with the staff prior to our arrival.
Beautiful large room- we had 45-50 in comfortably.
Lovely staff and great customer service.
We had a wonderful time, thankyou!
S. A.
A beautifully decorated pub with original features and Robinson's ales.
B. R.
Very good but a very old pub
J. M. F.
Loved this proper old boozer! Trad ales on but top gin too. Lovely cosy snug- they've really had some respect for this pub thanks a lot
M. W.
Nice little pub butt requires a good clean
S. S.
This place has been a second home for nigh on 15 years! Its comfy and cosy with original fixtures and real fires. The staff always bend over backwards to accommodate you and the food we had was amazing!
J. T.
Lovely little pub. Nice location so the women can go shopping and the men can have a drink
P. M.
One of the best interior decorations of any pub anywhere. Listed building and easy to see why. Always a good range of beers.
S. H.

Best pub I've been to in Preston! The gorgeous original interior has to be seen to be believed.
P. A.
Great pub. Nice and old
A. D.
This is a wonderful pub, very good beer
C. C.
Great traditional pub with excellent ales, the barman really knew his stuff and recommended some excellent beers.
S. G.
What a mind blowing experience. It's like stepping back in what I would expect of Victorian times visiting from NZ. Absolutely took my breath away. The barman was very accommating.
C. H.
A CAMRA Heritage pub and rightly so!!! What a gem!! Fabulous beers , friendly staff and locals. Beautiful!!
D. H.
Absolutely great old pub still with its character a must if you like old pubs.beer good barman great.
A. C.
Really amazing old style bar, good beers, fantastic gins and friendly and knowledgeable staff. You'll either be propping up the bar or say I'm one of the alcoves / side rooms as there isn't much space but it's used well... One of the only bars in the country to still have a traditional green and creme tiled facade (it explains it on a poster on the gents but avoiding taking photos in the loo's!)
P. C.
Stunning bar, cask marque certified. Robinson pub with Titanic beers normally on plus guest ales. 8 handpumps of well kept beer.
A. H.
Great old pub, range of beers, friendly service
J. G.
Crackin bar excellent ale friendly bar staff
D. R.
Great beer and atmosphere
R. H.
Cracking old British pub not to be missed. The Gem of Preston the interior is how a good bar should look like. Great selection of beers and spirits. So get down here asap you'll not be disappointed
B. S.
Absolutely an amazing pub. Christmas food was out standing, have been going to this pub for well over 10years and will continue to do so.
T. G.
Good local pub with great selection of cask ales
M. A.
This should be the best pub in Preston, it has all the basics. Immense amount of history, location, and is a gorgeous old pub. It has had in recent years poor landlords, but recently it has improved (though beer is expensive) the quality has gone up. It is going through well overdue modernisation. Definitely worth a visit
R.
Brilliant, best house in Preston. Smashing host.
M. C.
I was so impressed with the young bar maid. She politely asked me to sit down and she would serve me. She also followed covid-19 protocol. Thanks for making my visit a pleasant experience. I highly recommend having a pint in this welcoming pub, cheers Mark 😀 😊 😄
I. A.
Must be one of the best pubs in the area, great choice of real ales in a wonderful building.
F. H.
What a pub!!! It's like stepping back in time, genuine features, we absolutely loved it. Barman even gave us a laminated sheet with the pub's history which we found fascinating. We will be in Preston again in December and will take our camera with us. This is a pub that needs visiting if you are in the vicinity. It has three entrances on different streets and that takes some doing as its not huge.
D. W.
Old school pub in the heart of the City. A great selection of beers Inc. Old Tom which due to its strength is only available in half pints. 3 quirky rooms to enjoy your drinks which are always full of friendly Preston folk.
M. I.
Best looking pub in Preston , top ale and I love a Jones pork pie
d. t.
It a proper pub. Great ales and wait till you see the bar.
G. M.
Perfect example of a covid safe pub. Friendly atmosphere, fantastic staff who are always happy to help. Fantastic landlord who is supporting of both patrons and staff. Always a good pint, would definitely recommend
S. R.
A superb gem of a pub. Fantastic history and a genuine feel of the old days. The beer is amazing especially the old tom at 8.5 % wow 🥴. Thank you Mr Burke for the beer 👍
T. T.
Great choice of real ales in this historic pub. Cosy, too, with its fireplace tucked away in one of the rooms
A. T.
The Black Horse is a required visit if you're in Preston. As the oldest pub in the area with a history reflected in it's decor, you can really take in a bit of an old world vibe. Usually not that busy and broken up between several smaller entertaining rooms makes it feel fairly intimate and private, a good place to chat with friends over a pint. The beer selection is pretty good too if you're into that sort of thing. There's also an upstairs smoking area under cover which is cool.
Also, the buttons on the walls don't work, I've tried.
R. L.
One of the most original condition pubs in the North West...simply wonderful pub architecture with good beer and banter guaranteed
J. S. 7.
Great old fashioned pub, with great ales (super choice and this regularly changes). It feels intimate and homely, and has a great choice of music on the jukebox. There's nothing that quite beats sitting next to a real fire supping a pint of quality ale.
J. T.
If you like small enclosed seating areas and overpriced booze then this is the place for you! This must be the case for some people because the pub was very full and lively... Perhaps the poor person in me reacted to the £5 basic pint?
S. A.
Very good place to go for good night out
N. C.
Posted this two years ago but had to add more to the review after I had Christmas food from here. It was outstanding, and would recommend everyone to check it out!
K. T. N.
A lively little Rock/Alternative pub in Preston centre with a spacious bar, a varied jukebox, and well arranged seating. I'm coming back for sure. Not particularly big, but cosy enough and friendly.
S. H.
Large selection of beers and ales. Casks galore. Friendly service. A tad expensive though. Near to Preston market and shops. Do a selection of pies. Proper old pub with the supporting fixtures and fittings
J. D.
Nice traditional 123yr old pub
T.
This place is a vibe!
I went here for quick one before a work-do, and got plenty of help wrapping last minute gifts for a table game 🤣
J. N.
It's nice, the beer is good
T. S.
Best pub in Preston. fantastic selection of beers, unique decor and a great history.
R. S.
If you're in the area (or even if you're not!) do make the effort to visit this remarkably well preserved example of a fine Victorian Inn. Stunning original features in the comfortable and intimate interior include a mosaic-tiled floor and an ornate ceramic bar - one of only a handful left in the UK. Excellent guest ales are available - the Chocolate Moose Ale is not to be missed! Highly recommended.
S. K.
A bit old fashioned but they have good beer and, on the afternoon we were there, they had a proper fire lit. Nostalgia might not be what it used to be but there is something really comforting about an open fire when its Winter outside. Good company probably helps too.
M. 9.
Best pub in Preston, maybe in Lancashire. Excellent well-kept beer, knowledgeable and friendly bar staff, architecturally stunning. In the daytime it's an oasis of calm in the middle of the city centre.
N. H.
Been a while since my last visit, nice to get back in, popped in early doors so very quiet, had a couple of pints which were spot on
A. H.
I love this place it’s one of the oldest pubs in preston. My mother loved coming here to especially when she was younger. Lots of various beers and lagers to chose from. New bar staff on and unfortunately they didn’t know about the chez lager that used to be on and wasn’t really helpful in disgusting the other beers which was a shame.
e.
Historic Preston pub. Always a good selection of real ales and ciders along with the usual fair. Excellent pint of cask ale recommended to me tonight by the barman.
B. M.
Such a stunning pub, full of history and lovely people. Definitely recommend a visit when in Preston
m. i.
Not been in for 5 years. But did not disappoint new Landlord and staff could not do enough to answer all our questions. Beer in excellent condition particularly the Old Tom which we started on. Will be difficult to find better now in Preston.
A. W.
Excellent selection of real ales. Good to see there is again a selection of regional ales as well as Robinson ales. Very friendly staff
D. B.
Went there last night. Great selection of well-kept beers including Robinsons in a clean, welcoming and cosy environment. Up there as one of the best pubs in Preston and the North West.
B. B.
The best little traditional ale house in Preston, with tiles, stained glass and a bloody well kept cellar.
G. B.
Best pub in Preston. Situated in the centre of preston it has an original design to the building. Two cubby holes at front and a horseshoe setting at back. The beer is not your usual fare so if looking for something a bit more interesting then this the place for you. Almost forgot, stonking tunes on the jukebox!
A. E.
Lovely boozer. There's big, well-priced ale selection, and the interior of the pub is fantastic. There are several cosy rooms to choose from, and they're comfortable and nicely lit. It's not too busy, and reasonably priced. The only slight let down is the music; it seems like they have only two CDs: 'Now that's what I call 90s', and 'crooner classics'.
D. C.
One of the best real ale pubs in Preston and worth a visit just for the Victorian interior!
d. h.
Oldie worldie traditional pub. Friendly bar staff. Only downside a little pricy.
D. W.
The interior is fantastic but the pub gets very busy and claustrophobic on a busy night. Beer is the standard Robbie's range. Worth a look just for the interior but try and go at a quiet time.
A. R.
My go-to place when I'm having to shop in Preston. Nicely placed near St George's to suggest taking the weight off and enjoying a pint. Two front parlour rooms where conversation is infectious and great staff who always give a .....
m. g.
One of the most Covid secure pubs in Preston great landlord and great staff been going various time’s after lockdown and consistent with rules every visit day or night would recommend to everybody in Preston and beyond who wants a safe pub
A. N.
Great old fashioned bar in the centre of Preston. They have a good selection of real ales, if thats your thing. In the small room they have a proper coal fire which is a blessing during the cold winter months.
M. W.
One of my favourites, good old fashioned ambiance, historically and architecturally it's a feast for the eyes. Very welcoming , good beers, do a good gnt and their pork pies are legendary .
F. B.
This has got to be the best that Preston has to offer, ney Lancashire. Such a great kept cellar of fabulous beers, with knowledgeable pullers, set in a stain glassed, ornate tiled jewel of theatrical looking public houses of yesteryear. Really cannot speak too highly of this oasis, you can go in alone and within minutes be engaged in a lighthearted discussion of nonsense - fabulous!
B. K.
One of the best pubs in the country. You have to visit this fantastic real ale pub. Great selection of mainly Robinsons ales. Always served at their best. Its like taking a step back in time!
E. M.
Well worth a visit. Victorian unspoiled bar with wonderful stained glass. Lots of little rooms and a rather high bar. Beers great and the staff are friendly if you can see over the bar lol
K.
Top of the range proper pub. If you are looking for a pub in Preston with superb victorian character, a great bar person ( 4-6pm weds 10/4/19) and a really good juke box then look no further. 10 out of 10. Review from Kieran on 10/4/19.
J. E.
All the beer was on point. Tried 3 different cask ales, all were superb. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Fantastic atmosphere for a Monday night. Will be visiting again.
a. g.
Amazing little pub on the corner of 3 streets
It could appear in a Harry Potter movie . Very period building with lots of atmosphere.
N. B.
The Black Horse is full of character with the original interior being stunning.
The beer quality is superb - well conditioned and well served beer.
It takes a bit of finding if you don't know the area but it is definately worth it.
S. T.
Excellent traditional pub.
Fantastic selection of beer & pies.
Very friendly staff.
Lots of cosy little rooms with coal fired burning.
Worth a visit just for Old Tom on draught!
J. F. R.
A traditional old fashioned pub in Preston town centre.
Any one interested in old fashioned traditional British pubs should visit the Black Horse in Preston.
It has cosy little "offshoot" rooms to sit in and drink with your friends.
Also it has a horseshoe bar rather than a modern straight bar set against a wall.
G. C.
You got to love ❤ the titanic plum porter (sr)🤗🤪
J. A.
Historical pub 3 doors into it from 3 different streets fantastic mosaics tiles on the floor, Robinson beers.
J. S.

Excellent pub for Ales. Proper old school style, my favourite in the town centre.
A. H.
Great pint of Robinson's, the most beautiful pub interior in Preston, little rooms, lots of polished wood mirrors, ceramic tiling, mosaic flooring, and the smell of the gents toilet is a listed feature. And they've started serving pork pies.
T. C.
Good real ale pub. Traditional tiled bar with separate rooms and snug. Back mirrored room/ alcove is the place to be. Real fires in winter. Function room upstairs.
M. Y.
Lovely old Victorian pub _ toilets were clean although mould round sinks etc need attention . The detol mould and mildew product .is marvellous soray on leave , it disappears. Barman officious.but will come again for cosy ambiance
J. C.
Great traditional pub with a large selection of drinks
S. S.
The best pub in the city. Go to the back of the pub for seating you'll never want to move one. Sack off the commercial beers and try the Robinson's ales.
L. E.
A favourite of my partner's and I like it cos they do pork pies!
L. L.

A. S.
Wonderful old pub with good beer
d. 1.
Best pub in Preston. Great range of beers.
C. H.
Came here back in July 2016 and was disappointed to find only one ale on pump. Returned today to find eight including Robinsons Old Tom (perfectly kept). You'll see many reviews elsewhere commenting on the historical features of this outstanding House but I would now say that the ale offering matched and more than does credit to it's surroundings. I understand that the Guv'nor has only been on site for a few months and he should be congratulated for his effort. If you're in Preston and are looking for good ale - look no further.
C.
This pub has really nice staff, the staff are very welcoming and warming towards their customers. I would highly recommend.
M. Z.

Great, traditional, wonderful tiled bar, multi rooms / spaces (individually all on the small side), good range of beer - doors on to 3 separate streets.
m. g. g.
Been visiting this place over fifty years, still will be, steeped in history. That flooring could tell some tales.
S. M.

N. W.
Lovely pub ...real old school ... Must see if you like snugs parlours wood and mosaic floors ...😉
W.
Really good pub, nice atmosphere, spoilt by a rude, uninterested barman who seemed to enjoy giving short measures and should be replaced.
L. H.
It's a pub its clean, nice and friendly. The bar maid was a star on this visit.
J. C.
Good choice of beers, lovely staff.
E. M.
The corner pub is rich in history and the decor is lovingly antiquated. The bartenders were lovely and the cask beer delicious.
L. M.
Great beers, a proper pub & the bar staff are top notch too. Get in, get a loverly pint & get warm🍻🍻

Brilliant pub and staff. Warm welcome great selection of beers. Traditional olde worlde pub.
P. S.
Quiet city centre pub. Obviously look after the beer as it was excellent. Kid-friendly, if you go into one of the side rooms.
C. P.
It is a bit of an old man pub, but the choice of beer can't be faulted. A nice, historically significant building in the centre of Preston
K. B.

G. M.
lovely pub full of charm and some great real ales. Chilled ambiance and friendly staff.

Great olde worlde pub known for having three addresses. Stairs seem a lot steeper than they did in the 80s 😊

Perfect place for a pie and a pint.
B. C.
