J. G.
A really nice dining experience. Great food, great welcome, good beer on offer and in a great location by the canal. Waiters/waitresses very helpful and efficient. Landlord Martin took the trouble to come down and enquire if everything was to our satisfaction - it was. Recommended.
S. E.
We had a walk by the canal a couple of weeks ago and decided to stop at The Hand and Dagger for Sunday roast. Easily the best Sunday Roast in the area. It was so good we returned the following Sunday. We've tried the chicken and the beef. Both were delicious. But my absolute favourite are the potatoes dauphinoise. I look forward to trying the rest of the menu. Keep up the good work.👍

Fantastic ! , to be honest ive not been in for years and I was on my way back from Preston and called in for a pint , I think normally you have to book but the landlord was very friendly and helpful and asked if we wanted to eat , so a change of plan and he showed us to a quite table at the back of the pub , we ordered drinks and food the drinks came and the waitress did say we could have a bit of a wait before are food , 20 minutes later we was served and it was well worth the wait , I had the Cumberland sausage mash and veg and it was fantastic, I was with a vegetarian and she ate the Sunday lunch without the meat and she also enjoyed the meal , in total all four of us ate and drank and the bill came to £62 , a very fair price for what we had , I was so pleased with the pub service and staff we booked again for this coming Sunday.

Lovely campervan Park up ...Nice views...right on the canal ....Great food
T. B.
We use this place often, very friendly staff who do their best to accommodate the customers. Dog friendly and the food is a cut above the normal pub fare. Extensive seating area outside, good parking, what's not to like?
J. S.
A nostalgic trip back in time with excellent food. Most pubs don't feel like a pub anymore - The Hand and Dagger does. I'm nearly 37 and yet I felt like a 5 year old with a glass bottle of Coke and a packet of Smith's Cheese and Onion crisps while my dad sat with a pint again.
Friendly and timely service with food clearly made with skill and experience. A menu boasting plenty of viable options and a specials board with plenty more to boot.
This was only our first visit but I know there will be plenty more to come. Post lockdown my partner and I have been to a lot of pubs and restaurants where we've walked away feeling ripped off and/or disappointed - at The Hand and Dagger this couldn't be further from the truth.
My only complaint is that I don't live around the corner from it.
c. k.
Toom a lovely walk down the canal, friendly staff and amazing food.... we hist couldn't finish it all
C. B.
Five of us had a meal here last Sunday. We all had a great time . Lovely outdoor area with both fully covered and uncovered tables available. Staff went out of their way to be attentive and just generally lovely (makes a huge difference) .. Food & drink was fab and no complaints from any of us whatsoever.. easy parking.. good & clean outdoor toilet facilities ... dog friendly too (the pub not the toilet lol) .. will visit again 👍
J. K.
Stopped off towards end of a cycle ride. Good beer, at decent price. Nice beer garden at rear. Didn't try the food but other customers enjoying it.
N. B.
Where can you find good home made pub food? Not part of any chain and the food was excellent. Nice friendly welcome as well.
D. 1.
Great pizza. Friendly staff. Don't get a coffee outside of food service - you get charged proper coffee prices for an instant.
a. d.
Just a wonderful place...lovely atmosphere and the staff were brilliant...the food was absolutely amazing...really really good...we are going back soon
E. H.
Lovely staff and owner, we were made to feel very welcome as a family. Very busy but still really quick service and food was delicious - proper home cooked hearty meals, we cleared our plates. Will 100% return soon to try the Sunday dinner...
b. l.
We spent 2 nights in our campervan with our puppy. We were made very welcome by all the staff. We ate in the pub on both nights and I confess the chips were some of the best I've ever had. It's on our list to return, the canal walks are Great too x
A. Y.
Our first meal there for over ten years. Great atmosphere, very friendly staff who took the time to chat and excellent food at a reasonable price. We will be back soon.
R. H.
Friendly. Only had some lattes but these were good. Relaxing outside. Roomy inside with choice of areas to sit in.

M. H.
Booked in for a meal and it was very good. Service was very efficient by pleasant staff. I will be very happy to return in the future.
K. F.
Lovely friendly pub , very welcoming and lovely food
D. I.
Lovely food, lovely staff, welcoming and cosy atmosphere
G. B.
It not far from where we live in cottam and have passed it a few times and always said we should try it out. So today we did, only wish we had tried it sooner. There was a great atmosphere as we walked in and the service was even better. The whole team worked well toghter taking orders bringing drinks over and the meals etc, nothing was too much for them. We had 3 children with us and rather then having a separate children's menu, they chose off the main menu and they would get a child size portion of the meal. This meant there was far more choice for the kids then the normal nuggets, fish fingers and pizza etc. The food was really good and well presented. Certainly did not expect the level of service or quality of food from a local pub as we got. Would highly recommend a visit, we will be back soon.
L. H. (.
Excellent food and service a must visit establishment..... X
R. R.
Absolutely wonderful! Great food- it was freshly cooked and delicious. The service was really good, All the staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The owner was just great- what a lovely guy! We enjoyed sitting in the beer garden, it was so peaceful and lovely. We don't live far away and will definitely return! Highly recommend! ⭐

J. M.
Beautiful old character pub, a lovely buzzing atmosphere for a Sunday evening. Staff attentive and friendly. Food was exceptional, the Sunday Roast and the Hake Fillet Special are both a must try.
S.
Lovely place, really warm and welcoming owner and staff. Food was delicious and fresh, and at a really reasonable price. Will definitely return for lunch again.
T. B.
As usual, the home made food was superb. The French Onion soup , the best I have ever had 😛😋 !
The chicken curry was excellent.
Stuffed !
I've been at the Hand and Dagger many times, it never disappoints.
Highly recommended
M. K.
There is a pleasant atmosphere, staff are excellent. The chef can be relied upon to cook a scrumptious meal. Not just your average chef, I had a steak meal and it was cooked to perfection! I can recommend and on a summer's day the canal is at the side of this pub. Recommend
B. B.
Excellent food and service really had a lovely after noon and meal
J. T.
Nice little place at the side Lancaster canal with a mooring place just under the bridge. Didn't eat but the food looked and smelt amazing
B. B.
The husband had the steak and ale pie from the specials board. Full marks for the pie and extra marks for the chips. I had the fish chips and mushy peas. The batter was lovely and crisp and again lovely chips. To finish we had Cartmel lemon drizzle. Delicious. They were busy and next time we will book just to make sure there is room. Very attentive staff and entertaining owner. Lovely atmosphere.
J. S.
Amazing pub, always Fantastic food with friendly service.
M. B.
Attended a funeral today staff were fantastic the buffet was also spot on great Inn
J. H.
Called in for lunch after a walk by the canal have to say food was superb as always. You won't be disappointed
s. g.
Great food, service and staff. Cleanliness on the whole very good. 4 stars only because of the flies!!! And yes I know, next to the canal and in a country location but they were plague like in their persistence and whilst I would not like to see chemical sprays maybe some electronic devices might keep the numbers down?
a. g.
Great stop off for a cold beer served bh freindly landlord and staff. Biker friendly too
S. M.
First class food drink and service from friendly young staff. Dog friendly too and next to canal for a decent walk . 9 of us 100% happy
m. g.
Old worldly pub , service and food was brilliant.
S. H.
Lovely scampi and chips and peas.
Very welcoming host and bar staff.
D. G.
Lovely pub, very entertaining land lord, makes you feel so comfortable. Food is lovely and well presented. The pub is set in very nice grounds, dogs are allowed inside and ourside pub, so if you don't like dogs...probably not the place for you !
I would definitely go back again, you are made to feel so welcome 😊

A family group of us (Banks) came here a few weeks ago to celebrate a birthday. We had a young girl and a young lad that looked after us and we’re really attentive, nothing was too much. 5 of us had the fillet steaks and each one was cooked to absolute perfection, it really was melt in the mouth! The kids were also well catered for too. Lovely atmosphere and beautiful setting. Looking forward to returning. A massive thankyou to all staff and a shout out to the chef please! Brilliant x
n. d.
Great food good atmosphere pleasent staff.
p. j.
Sorry to say was dissapointed service was good pub itself is nice but i ordered steak and ale pie , what came was a veggie stew little steak big slices of carrot served in a big plate dish not as a pie with chips just chucked in stew did mention to manager about the way it was served said they would look into serving different way which is ok my partners lamb was nice so would say go and see but just a heads up about pie
L. B.
Traditional friendly pub. Staff excellent, very attentive. Had the fish & chips served with mushy peas and tartare sauce which was excellent! Very fresh fish expertly cooked. We definitely recommend and will be back to sample more of the menu.
M. W.
Really family friendly traditional pub. Tasty food, loads of room and great staff, particularly good banter
H. M.
We came here last night for my birthday, 15 of us all together, the food the service and the landlord were amazing, nothing was too much trouble, the food hot and delicious and lovely smiling staff were great even though between us we had 4 dogs!! I stayed over night in our campervan, they have an area that fits 3 I think and only £5 a night, they also have a couple of glamping pods, we will be back again soon, thanks for making my birthday feel special x
M. L.
Brilliant pub. So glad this place survived the pandemic! Superb food the other day! Two hand pumps serving the all important cask ale which were very tasty. All credit to owners and especially staff.
B. F.
A very friendly, welcoming pub. Tables set well apart and not too crowded. A very pleasant place to sit with a drink and a soot of lunch after a long walk.
j. p.
Proper nice pub with great atmosphere and friendly staff. Martin welcomed us even though we have been once before over a year ago, and brought his beautiful black lab alfie out to greet us. Made my mums birthday night he did. Recommend the deep fried brie with cranberry sauce, proper tasty!
T. W.
Visited here for my sisters birthday today, the staff were all so so lovely and acomodating and the food was abasalutely fantastic. Our little ones even got to feed the chickens in the grounds, such a beautiful place. Thank you so much Hand and Dagger Team 👍
J. B.
Love love love this pub. The food really is spectacular, eaten in gorgeous rustic surroundings. Not to be missed
S.
What a brilliant pub! Came because of the reviews that told us about the vegan menu and were really glad we did! The staff are lovely, so welcoming and helpful. The menu is brilliant for vegans/veggies & gluten free peeps. We asked about the story behind their big vegan menu - their chef enjoys making tasty vegan dishes and authentic curries. Can't wait to come back on a nice day to walk along the canal and eat more amazing food!
P. G.
Good vegan options. Easy parking. Fine walks asking the canal
R. R.
First time we have eaten here but been several times during the summer where you can sit in the beer garden and chill out. Sunday lunch was very good you can choose from the special Sunday lunch menu or the specials board. We had meals fro both and no complaints from anyone. Portions very good we couldn't even manage a dessert will definitely be back
A. W.
Popped in for a pint on the way home. Great beer served by friendly staff. Will be going back for a meal. Fantastic setting right next to the Lancaster Canal
K. P.
My favourite pub. Great staff and a wonderful landlord (Martin). Entertainment in itself just listening to him. The beers and the food are excellent. Only a pity that there is not a bit more room for drinking only, as all the tables are regularly reserved for meals. ..
and I can understand why.
W. B.
A real friendly place to visit great ales on tap and do excellent Coffee ☕. Great menu full home cooking. Excellent place to be. Cheers. A lovely country side pub...
A. H.
This is a fantastic but with amazing food at reasonable prices. Owner and staff are always friendly and polite and happy to help out and advise you on the menu. In winter they have roaring fires and in summer there are tables with umbrellas for you to use whilst outside. Children welcomed and mist meals can be made for the children. Dog friendly pub too.
K. W.
A wonderful pub in a delightful location. The staff are friendly and helpful, dogs are allowed and welcomed. The food is truly outstanding and very reasonably priced and the portions will please even the hungriest of patrons.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough, there is simply not a thing to be critical about. Amazing. Will be coming back again and again.
S. L.
Good food and very friendly staff well recommended
A. C.
We stopped here for lunch, and were met by a lady with a warm smile. Initially we were seated in a large rear dining room, however we moved into the main bar close to the open fire, a good move. We enjoyed fantastic fish and chips that were piping hot. The meals other diners were having looked equally tasty. I would return here because of the service, quality of food, location and large car park.
K.
Picturesque location, very rural. Pleasant small rear garden with seating area. Food very well cooked and not over seasoned. Savoury mushrooms in cheese sauce was very tasty and not too rich. Home made chicken pie was served piping hot with a very light pastry cover. Pleasant staff. Definitely on the 'to return ' list!
J. R.
Excellent meal here on a Saturday night. Late booking but fitted us in. Friendly helpful stall.
D. W.
1st time eating here. Good menu, went for the 2 course Sunday lunch, soup was really nice as a starter, but the beef Sunday lunch was a little disappointing as the massive Yorkshire pudding and lack of meat and small amount of vegetables didn't do the taste Justice. Was really tasty but lack or meat spoilt it but all in all quite good
A. W.
Really enjoyed our lunch today. First visit, but will definitely go again. Food was very good, and plenty of it! Service was also great. May need to book next time. It's very popular!!!
L. W.
Cheap and cheerful, lovely staff and really nice location by the canal. I've eaten here a few times in the past and i have really enjoyed it each time, however, this time round both mine and my partners meals weren't the best. The pate was very sloppy and the gluten free triangles of bread were tiny. My main course of fish was nice but my partner didn't rate his gluten free sausage and mash. I think this was just an off say so it won't be stopping me from returning. For gluten free diners this is an amazing find as most of the meals can be made alternatively.
A. R.
Walking in is like walking into a warm hug. The atmosphere was friendly, warm and welcoming from the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left.
The food was amazing, I was there with my little boy who is not quite 3 and I can't remember the last time he ate so well and enjoyed his food so much. My partner was blown away with her meal too as was I.
The portions were a good size too and they don't cost the world.
J. H.
A massive thanks for letting me use your outdoor tap to fill my water bottles.
J. G.
Brilliant food and a warm welcome!
S. W.
Had a great meal. Wasn't planning on having three courses but ended up doing as it was so nice. Highly recommend the beef! Would have been happy with just a plateful of beef it was cooked that well. So glad I found this place, will definately be coming back.
R. F.
Lovely country pub/restaurant. Great friendly staff, busy but homely athosphere. Gorgeous food, well cooked and presented. Good price for standard of food and service. Will be visiting again. Most enjoyable.
D. M.

P. W.
Absolutely fabulous. Haddock n chips etc., superb. Martin and the staff superb. This could turn into a weekly trip.
R. L.
Fantastic. Great food. Staff very professional and friendly.
G. D.
Good solid pub grub, all the standards done brilliantly, in impressive portions and reasonably priced. Great service too, very helpful and friendly.
R. S.
Lovely ye olde style pub.
H. C.
Great little country pub with very good choices of food from the menu, including a vegan menu. The outdoor seating area is beautiful and there is even a little path which leads to the canal next to the pub. There is lots of parking so that isn't an issue and there are also some camping pods at the back of the pub which I think you can stay at
S. M.
Always enjoy coming to the Hand and Dagger, BEST Sunday Lunch in the area. Martin and his team are always welcoming. Easy to park with a great outdoor seating area. Highly recommend to anyone looking for great food and nice surroundings.
C. J.
Great place to stop off after a hard ride.
J. H.
A party of 5 called tonight. Delicious food, they even made the curry hotter for us as requested! We all enjoyed the food, friendly staff and the regulars were welcoming and friendly too. Definitely will go back again.
R. G.
Excellent service, great food 5 star all the way!
Thank you
A. H.
What a find ! We came across this place while out cycling and stopped off for some lunch. The Landlord and all the staff are lovely and chatted to us as though we were regulars. Really nice people. The food was well priced and delivered to our table quickly which was good (we were hungry!) there was a place to store our bikes and we sat outside at one of the numerous tables under an umbrella, shading from the sun. We noticed they are planning on renting out some camping pods which is a fantastic idea and we will be back to stop in one. A proper good country pub where your made to feel welcome. Oh and they offered to refill our water bottles without us asking, put ice in them and even offered us free cordial ! Winner ! Thanks folks.
S. M.
Was really nice. Proper country pub. Good lovely. The service was immaculate. The lady who served our table was superb at her job.
J. S.
Food was lovely and very hot.
L. W.

N. H.
Lovely place, good food, great service , reasonably priced 👌🏼
B. a. J.
Proper country pub, no pretensions. Great food, friendly staff, good service & very entertaining Landlord! Kids and dogs made welcome. My kids love it as anything on the menu can be a half portion so they are working their way through the menu. I love the fish & chips, curry and the roast dinners.. sticky toffee pudding too. It’s by the canal so can walk it off afterwards!
J. R.
Excellent food, atmosphere and simply a good time - again. Always worth a visit every time
P. H.
Walked with the family from Ashton up the canal to the H&D. Really friendly staff, and good grub. Worth the 5 mile trek.
J. T.
Good was good. Nice atmosphere. Lovely canal side walk at the back.
C. M. (.
Great historic country pub. Good beer. A good selection of great food that's not expensive with daily specials. Landlord is very friendly and welcoming. Go for a walk along the canal that runs next to the pub and then have a good meal after your walk.
C. A.
Lovely venue. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Food well cooked and a variety of dishes.
J. D.
I had lunch here today with a group of colleagues and the food and service was second to none. I would gladly travel great distances to return to this pub!! The food was fresh and clearly gourmet, as opposed to what you may find with standard pub fare that you would find in any of the larger chain pubs in the area (Wetherspoons, Marstons, Hungry Horse, Thwaites, etc). They served an excellent local ice cream (Mint) that was exceptional. The staff was upbeat and friendly, interacting with all of the diners who were likely regulars. The presentation and portion sizes was excellent, clearly a sign that the chef and proprietors value the customers overall experience while visiting. I can not say too many good things about this pub, definitely a diamond in the rough near Salwick.
J. B.
Very positive welcome by the guvnor, respectable choice of ales, and the food was delicious and arrived promptly. Pub had a convivial atmosphere, and decor is no-nonsense old-fashioned. It's a bit remote, took my satnav a couple of tries to find it.
L. P.
Great campsite. Cheap, cheerful, great views, quiet, clean loos, and great pub too. Would have been a 5 star review had the showers been in working order, but this was explained before we booked.
T. F.
Basic pub grub
Very friendly staff and nice beer.
My measure is always, would I visit again?
No
There are nicer places
D. J.
Outstanding, great pub food at good prices. I regularly take my 94-year-old Mum and she gets treated like royalty.
They serve a half portion of nearly everything they sell which suits the smaller appetite. Mum would be out-faced by a regular portion.
J. G.
Went on bank holiday Monday had the 10oz gammon with 2 eggs juice tender excellent. Staff on the ball and very friendly.
B. U.
Excellent food and service, really nice staff.
Will be back for Sunday lunch.

Buzzing and welcoming atmosphere despite being off the beaten track. A pretty and convenient location for a chilled canal walk. Good beer, scrumptious food and even a vegan menu! :)

Great food and service. Plenty of covered outdoor space. Good value too! Highly recommended.
A. M.
Love this pub. Others are possibly smarter or more upmarket, but the menus are straightforward and the food is top drawer, and Martin is a very cordial and entertaining host.
M. B.
Went to the Hand-Dagger today 26/8/2019 we have not been before and we had our dog with us I went to ask if dogs were allowed in and they said yes which was a relief as the sun was out .we picked a nice table both of us ordered fish and chips it was a platfull and very well cooked we both enjoyed our meal. It was busy but we didn't have to wait long for the meals service was very good would recommend it to anybody
S. M.
What a lovely pub: could also be called the Dog and Dagger as they allow in lots of friendly furry friends, and take care of them too. Ours was offered water and petted.

The Pub of the Gods. I would not be surprised if the day I die I woke up here. The food is on the level of Michelin star restaurants across the world. The atmosphere here is what imaged the colosseum to be like in the peak of the Roman Empire. Every second of my life that I don't spend here is a second wasted in my opinion. The service here compares to what I imagine the queen receives when she decides to go to a Mcdonalds on a Wednesday evening.
In my opinion, every year a day should be dedicated to the Hand and Dagger.
I would not be surprised if that everyone even associated with this godsent establishment was knighted for there services to humanity.
I love this Pub with all my heart.
The only thing stopping it from its 10/10 is Cam Hawkes
So, unfortunately, it is with a heavy heart that i can only give this oasis a 9/10 humper rating.
God bless.
