Reviews of Winckley Street Ale House

1st visit here. Nice and cosy and the wood burner was keeping the place warm on a cool January afternoon. Only gripe was the mens toilets being a tad small but all in all a good edition to Preston..
T. H. L.
The best watering hole.
Fantastic selection of ales and a wide range of takeaway cans too.
The staff are amazing, I’d recommend this place first above anywhere else in Preston to come for a drink with friends, family or just to chill yourself.
T. P.
Had been recommended this place by a few friends, nice decor feels like a pub. menu is very simple choice of pies or pies and a few snacks like sausge and pork scratchings, I had a butter pie, so did my step Dad and my Mother ate the fish pie we all enjoyed your food very much although I thought the onion in the butter pie was too much normally in a butter pie they mince the onion and but the pastry was lovely and my mother loved her fish pie.
J. D.
Some of the best food I've had around Preston! The bar staff were great and very helpful with which beers to drink (they have a lot of choice!)
I would highly recommended
D. F.
Went in on a Wednesday around 1pm, fairly quiet but a few others throughout the bar. A very good choice of beers, so you should always find something you'd like. Only minor down for me was the choice of music on a large TV screen which was 1990-2000's.
B. B.
Excellent drinking joint, friendly staff and (I suspect I was next door) brilliant cocktails. Recommended!
J. B.
Lovely place. Small, friendly venue with decent beers. The main attraction are the pies if course. All ours were great. Even the vegan choice which had a chickpea curry filling. I had Steak & Garstang Blue cheese with mash and gravy. Quality ingredients, freshly prepared and cooked just right. Well worth a visit.
J. T.
The bar manager is a real credit to the place, really genuine and personable and always funny! Great beer, some of the best craft beer in town. Always on the list to visit- will be back soon (too soon).
A. G.
A nice little pub in a quiet street. Lots of great local real ales to choose from & have a session 🍺🍺🍺
I. G.
Brilliant choice of beers, food menu was great,I had a pulled pork baguette, BBQ sauce and fries washed down with a cool pint of brakespeare ale,I can't recommend this place enough, good service and information, sit inside or out on a sunny or windy day ,adds to it's character.
P. R.
Great selection of craft beer on keg and cask. Welcoming and enthusiastic staff. Recently started doing food with a door selection of bar meals on the menu.
J. G.
Great atmosphere and great company. Excellent service. Will definitely come back whenever I am in town again.
I. L.
Had 4/5 different ale's all hit the spot, sound lad behind the bar, definitely return
L. P.
Beautiful little place in the center of Preston, pies are so good 😋 you have to try Fish and rabbit! Interesting the Otter’s Pocket beer 🍺! “Soundtrack” 🎸is ok!
R. F.
Great selection of ales, really friendly atmosphere. Good time had by all and a clear head next morning. Quality, excellent and cheers.
R. S.
Good selection of beer, friendly staff, nice little place. Will be back when next in Preston.
P. R.
Mirco pub with excellent choice of beers. Friendly staff. Recommended
g. b.
Card only here tried two of their ales albeit at £4.10 for 2 halves...one wasn't to my liking however the other wasn't too bad tbh...First time I've visited...will come again on another visit to preston
M. s.
Great and good value food, great ales and the staff are super friendly!
P. R.
One Preston's newer establishments but one I'll be visiting regularly. The pies are divine. We tried the Fish Pie and the Vegetarian Gobi Aloo Pie both were amazing. It also has a selection of great beers all at a fair price.
J. W.
Great selection of ales and beer. Good atmosphere, faultless service from the friendly staff.
10 out of 10.
O. M.
Had a night how here with my friends. What a nice and chill place. Great beer and good food. Nice atmosphere. The staff there are really nice, especially Johnny. He was ace at remembering our drinks. Highly recommended here. One of the best places in Preston to drink.
M. R.
Great place nice location just off the main high street fantastic selection of real ales lagers and stouts the staff were really friendly and helpful
M. L. (. t. G.
Great pie, lovely mash and gravy. Really tasty sticky Sausages. Beer was nice too. Lovely Saturday early tea.
D. L.
Very friendly people and a superb selection of tasty beers.. You can't go wrong.
D. L.
Great food and a good selection of drinks, friendly staff and good service. Really hope that it will make it through the summer, as I can't see that pie and mash is going to be everyone's go-to option on a warm summers eve
C. P.
Fantastic ale house! Cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, great beers and dog friendly!
C. F.
Great service, relaxed atmosphere and a wonderful selection of Cask, Keg and Can. Food is also delicious and filling for next to nothing, always a lovely place to visit
J. M.
Great beers, great atmosphere and great service.
A. H.
My wife and I visited this lovely place for the first time today on my sons recommendation.
The drinks were excellent, the food first class. I had 2 lovely Ipa's. I also had the Winkley beefburger and chips, it was delicious. My wife had Haloumi salad (which she shared with me), which was also delicious. I thoroughly recommend this venue to anyone who likes a craft beer (other drinks available). I also recommend their very tasty food. (Our compliments to chef). We will definitely be back. I must also mention the hard working young man that was running the bar and dealing with the tables. I can't believe I forgot to tip him. Double bubble next time. You will definitely see us again very soon.
e. r.
Went in here the other week with my wife before heading for a meal for our anniversary. Just called in as we passed. What a great decision. The lad behind the bar was so friendly and had an excellent knowledge about the beer selection. The experience was so good we called back in again after our meal. Have been back several times since and have had a 5 star experience everytime. Love the place, the staff and the beer. Long may it continue.
D. W.
Fantastic place to have a beer. Such a relaxed vibe. Staff are so friendly. Highly recommended
K. W.
Lovely, friendly place for good beer
A.
Great choice of beers, nice atmosphere and friendly staff! One of the best pubs in Preston.
P. R.
Enjoyed my time here, the Chicken was fabulous
S. M.
Absolute gem of bar! Really wide range of real ales and beers, and a really good menu which is fantastic value! The staff are really good!
D. S.
Great food and great service. Nice little pub with some great pies on the menu. Simple food done well. Definitely give this a try if you like a pie and a pint. Will definitely return to try some of the specials. Dog friendly and family friendly too. Recommend 100%.
M. B.
Popped in one Friday night, the ale and ciders on tap were excellent choices, the live music was beautiful and really added to what is a great friendly atmosphere. Will be back to try the menu soon as it looked intriguing. I sort of wish this was my local as people really were having such a good time in there, it's relaxed and upbeat, I like it, one group of a dozen crammed round a table laughing and bantering, clearly friends or colleagues, another table hosted a solitary person having a late tea, the rest were couples, very mixed but welcoming place. The food Did smell good, I wish I hadn't already eaten. If you like meals with pies this is a good suggestion. Retro modern, relaxed quirky, British home made food style with a wide selection of drinks you won't normally see.
J. B.
Lovely home cooked food and a relaxed atmosphere loved it.
N. H.
What a great bar! Friendly staff and excellent service.
S. T.
Quite literally the best pie and mash I have ever had, and such good value for money.
C. H.
We were part of a large party and they catered for us very well...despite the lack of space in the tiny kitchen. We did have to pre-order but there were a couple of changes which the staff accommodated easily. There were no criticisms from anyone about any of the pies ordered and we ordered the majority of the choices available. Excellent mash and gravy and the mushy peas were good too! Very good effort - well done you!
C. N.
The best pie and mash I've ever had. Packed to the brim with prime meat. Mash was smooth and creamy, gravy was lovely and rich.
We had the steak and ale, the butter pie and the lamb hotpot. All were fantastic and definitely worth the money. Highly recommended. Atmosphere was great and beer was good. The service was excellent
A. B.
Was recommended by a friend & didn't disappoint. Great food, just a pity I do dry January
D. C.
Love this place, fantastic pies (large portions) and great selection of beers.
K. B.
Good choice of drinks. Friendly staff, good food.
J. M.
Went here for the first time on Weds and really enjoyed it. Lovely atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. The food was delicious and freshly made. Ordered the butter pie with cheesy mash and the vegan burger. Was not disappointed. Will definitely be returning
V. E.
Jonny is to beer what Yoda is to the Force. Super cool place
H. N.
Great food. The best fish pie I've eaten in a long time. Good ales and cider. Place quirky and comfortable. Staff friendly and efficient. Only one niggle - there is only the one loo - could do with more.
J. M.
Fabulous food! I had the vegetarian gobi pie mushy peas red cabbage and gravy and my wife had potato pie and cheese mash both freshly made and piping hot Stunning!! Complement to the chef.A really good atmosphere as well for midweek dint feel like we were in a bar in Preston definitely recommend Otters pocker☺️
I. T.
Good ales and quality food, especially for the price!
Jonny and the team were friendly and had some great recommendations too. Highly recommend!
W. L.
My husband and I called in today for a drink, and we also felt a little peckish,
so my husband had the chicken and leek pie mash and peas which he thoroughly enjoyed and I had a cheese and ham toastie with a lovely side salad and pickle and coleslaw too
Would definitely recommend you to visit !!
Extremely nice staff .
n. m.
Awesome, never fails to satisfy and whole bloody lot is top drawer: staff; layout; ambience and they keep a fabulous bar.
A. J.
Tables were so sticky we had to cover our table in menus. The sticky sausages remain our favourite dish, unfortunately they messed up our order. So I received my pie, my partners needed another 40 minutes so we had to get it to go. Pies are about average and need improving.
J. D.
We really enjoyed our lunch at the Otters Pocket. The pies were amazing and the beer was great. The atmosphere was good so we could chat and enjoy our meal. The staff were polite and attentive. We will go back.
C. G.
Good food. Good service. Good drinks. Wonderful prices. Can't fault it ! Thank you!
M. I.
Always top friendly service and great ales
S. B.
Excellent food and great service. Drinks are reasonably priced and good local ales, though not my thing. Nice atmosphere and the walls are decorated with famous artwork with just a hint of added otter.
D. B.
Went with some friends for a Sunday dinner, food was exceptional, tried the rabbit pie which comes with mash as standart and asked for a side order of red cabbage. Portions are good, could go for another tho, and it's a fair price especially for the quality. As for drinks they have some ales that change often but I went for the lagger which I prefer. Good experience, will definitely come back.
s. m.
If you like superb pies with top quality ingredients, freshly made to order accompanied with buttery mash and red wine gravy. You just have to go, you will not be disappointed. Great friendly staff as well.
A.
Lovely homemade food and lovely friendlystaff. The place was busy. The only let down was that the seating and table area was very small and cramped. It's not ideal place to eat for large families/groups or for pushchairs or disabled people in wheelchairs at their busiest times. Other than that I highly recommend going there.
m. c.
a wonderful new sparkling venue..excellent helpful staff..super beer..a must visit
M. A.
Great beer and pies. Another ale house in Preston just what I like. My only suggestion. Try to have more rabbit and venison pies on stock. This is the second time we missed out and it was 12.30pm on a wet Tuesday afternoon!
C. G.
If you like pies this is the place for you. Informal dining gets busy at weekends but worth the wait and average pie meal prices under £10 even with sides. Friendly staff and lively atmosphere, definitely worth a visit.
S. S.
Nice selection of pies and a few good beers. Choice and volume of music for a Sunday afternoon was a bit strange though. Did spoil the atmosphere of a nice pie and ale pub a bit. Couldn't really chat.
M. H.
Great place with a brilliant variety of Real Ales
L. E.
Lovely place to eat, lovely cosy interior also! Fairly priced too and staff were pleasant and friendly. Lovely atmosphere. The only downside for me was there wasn't enough choices on the menu & it's very small and cramped. Would return though😊
S. s.
The service was slow over 45 min for the food to arrive and the vegetarian option was not available and the Butter pie was not value for money. The meat options seem to offer better value. Not a place for a work lunch time
z. g.
Tasty food.. reasonable prices. Will go again ! ;)
A. P.
Visited with a friend, I had steak and ale pie with colcannon mash, she had chicken and leek one. Both were delicious, with proper good chunks of meat in and all that for a really reasonable price. Defo place I will be visiting again.
S. M.
Lovely venue, great beers and AMAZING pies
C. E.
Called in for a quick drink at lunch. Quirky little place with plenty of seating. Service quick, helpful and friendly. Will definitely be calling in again to sample pie and their cask ales
S. G.
Awesome pie, great beer. What more could you want?
A. M.
Very quiet when we were there, but any new bar, serving decent beer is welcome.
Small and friendly, mainly aimed at foodies during the day.
J. D.
Good pies - particularly the butter pie - and ale. Staff really friendly. Pity not to be able to get tea or coffee after meal.
D. E. (.
I've been here a couple of times and really rate it. Decent, high quality real beers and interesting drinks. Friendly staff. Informal vibe. Check out the otter-themed artwork parodies
R. C.
Good selection of beers, I tried a few and they were all good. Food was tasty and service great. Good Covid measures in place
P. K.
Cracking pies, mash n mushy peas, and ales. The gravy seems waaaay too much at the outset, and then some sort of magic unfolds - the mash absorbs the gravy at a rate of knots and the pie pastry too. Before you know it you have a clean plate and an empty glass...
t. h.
First visit at lunchtime. small menu but very good. Steak and Blue cheese pie very good and the Lamb shepherds pie was excellent. will be back
J. F. R.
I visited the Otters Pocket on Winckley Street in Preston.
It was a most enjoyable experience.
The service was quick and efficient.
It is in Preston town centre.
It is a good sized pub.
There is plenty of seating inside.
It has a good range of lagers and real ales available.
I would recommend a visit to The Otters Pocket on Winckley Street in Preston.
j. c.
Excellent food.Freshly made. The butter pie was delicious. The lager was also first rate. Will definitely be going again and highly recommended.
J. D.
Went along after friends reviews and was delighted we did.
The meals which we chose were Fish pie and mushy peas and Chicken and leek with green veg and creamy mash.
Hubby and I give it 5💥
D. P.
Simply excellent , had the rabbit pie (last one they had) and can honestly say it’s one of the tastiest dishes I’ve had in a looooooong time , will definitely be recommending! As Arnie would say “Pie’ll be back”
C. B.
Great bar in the centre of Preston. Excellent craft ale and brilliant food with an easy atmosphere and friendly staff
G. S.
Just changed hands when we visited but order was correct and food was delicious. Good choice of beers. Gluten Free food and drink also available
c. o.
Had a cracking night at the Otters pocket. We were lucky enough to see French horn (sax 😂) and guitar jamming that was truly next level. I enjoyed it so much that I actually joined in and did a tribute to Tenacious D. Thanks to the amazing musicians xxx
K. R.
Amazing pies, great atmosphere, recommend "Mary lost her Lamb",
tasty shepherds pie with massive chunks of lamb, topped off with creamy cheesy mash.
W. G.
A great place, very friendly and excellent service. Chilled atmosphere and friendly clientèle.
J. B.
Lovely food, great beer. You'll have to wait for your food cos it's freshly made as it should be and it's worth the wait.

E. K.
Brilliant.!! , ordered steak and ale pie for 1, unfortunately they didn't have the rabbit pie I would have liked to try.
M. S.
Good traditional ales. Pleasant, cosy atmosphere. Just a little chaotic. This is probably down to it being overly popular for its size.
R. m.
Great little place, pie's are amazing and a small but good selection of beers
D. C.
This is a cracking little establishment serving excellent craft ales and superb Pie, peas and mash. Well worth a visit.
