We went here for Sunday dinner with family it looked like a nice spot and had good reviews.
We did book in advance which is probably advisable it was quiet when we arrived at 6pm but that is late for a Sunday!
Unfortunately they were out of beef and lamb but had the pork belly which everyone was happy with as I'm not usually a fan of pork belly I went for the house burger instead.
Well none of us were disappointed the roast dinners looked fantastic and the pork belly looked amazing as well I was a little jealous!
The burger was also lovely the pulled brisket on top was amazing very very tasty!
We all enjoyed the food and the staff seemed very nice especially our waitress who bought some water and a treat over for the dog as well!
Lovely location with walks near by and the pub itself was a really nice building and nice and comfy with an open fire.
Would definitely recommend!

Had an excellent lunchtime meal here. Service was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is appealing. Outdoor bar on a sunny day. Very popular place. The decor suits my taste. An eclectic mix of framed pictures, open fire, fairy lights, fresh flowers and candle on all tables. Highly recommend a visit.

The Cunning Man public house is situated in Burghfield next to the River Kennet. This is a truly lovely venue. Plenty of seating inside and outside in the garden. In the summer you can’t beat sitting outside in the sun. Lazy Saturdays or Sundays at the pub in the beer garden with an ice cold drink and some decent food … mmm. The staff are relaxed and friendly. Food arrives fairly quickly given how busy this place gets - it is popular and rightly so. Inside the pub the decor is traditional relaxing with a couple open wood burning fireplaces. Food menu is pretty good, standard fair but enough choice. I hadn’t been here for years and forgot just how good this place is. A proper English pub for sure. Remember to register your car inside when you arrive - it’s free to park they just need to ensure parking is used by customers. Great place. Recommended.

It’s a lovely looking pub and as usual, Vintage Inns didn’t disappoint. It’s definitely the best one I’ve been to. We were put at a table right by the fire which was lovely. The waitress was friendly and although the service wasn’t the fastest, they were quite busy so it can be forgiven! The food was great and the festive menu meant I could have a little Christmas pudding :) generally great experience and definitely want to come back!

Fantastic old building right next to canal so weary walkers may stop for a simple bar snack or meal either indoors or out. Friendly table service. We walked from Theale along the tow path and stopped for a couple drinks and simple bar snacks, portion sizes on the small size but very tasty. Dog friendly. Toilets upstairs need a little maintenance.

Amazing place by the River Kennett with a huge beer garden. Rich menu and friendly staff. Great kitchen and nice selection of wines & beers. Strongly recommended.

Exceptional food and such good prices. Beautiful pub. Used to come here years ago when walking down the canal. Such a lovely location.

Came here again on Sunday and got that 5* roast! We were very happy with the meal this time and shared the chocolate brownie for dessert - delicious!

Came here for Sunday lunch today and ordered the pork belly roast and turkey roast. Both were really delicious, however we don't feel they were great value for money. Both dishes felt a bit on the small side: broccoli was missing from both and there were only a couple of carrots, parsnips and potatoes on each. The turkey roast was also missing the cranberry sauce and pigs in blankets. The pork belly roast only had a tiny slice of roasted apple on top. If the quantities of food had been greater, and all bits listed on the menu were on the plate, it would have been a 5* roast!

Lovely building, great initial atmosphere & aesthetics plus a friendly head barman….BUT, let down by both a lack of & then some v young waiting staff. We experience v slow service (on a reasonably quiet day!), forgotten items & food which arrived fairly cold… not really good enough for a gastro pub which has great potential.

Lovely mother's Day lunch, venue was busy but staff dealt with this very well and were very efficient and did not rush us at all . Food was delicious and the chocs and daffodil on the table were a lovely touch

Love this pub. It has a great ambience inside and out, the staff are attentive and helpful and the prices are super reasonable. The food is good too (try the flowerpot dessert! So pretty). It also makes a nice spot for lunch in a walk from Reading

The family and I enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the pub. Interior and exterior is modern, clean and makes you feel like you are far away from the hustle and bustle. Just a great atmosphere coupled with friendly staff.
Food was good. As a plant based eater, I enjoyed the veg roast. I hope to see more vegan options in the future.
Overall, a great afternoon at a great country side pub.
Keep up the good work and will be back!

Lovely setting, on the river, big garden and plenty of outside seating. The warmer weather was just getting started, we arrived at early lunchtime, after a long journey for food & drinks, unfortunately they didn’t have hardly anything to offer us. The menu looked impressive, we chose the sharing platter, but this wasn’t available, so we chose a chicken sandwich & chips, but there wasn’t any bread… so we just had chips each. Which looked more like a side order when it arrived. £2.95 each, for a pot of chips. The staff who served us, were very nice. Just bad planning really, surely someone can get the supplies in, as the sun was shining, and this definitely will bring the customers to a beautiful pub with a lovely well kept garden. Dog friendly too. We will return again.

We came to the Cunning Man for Sunday lunch and it was extremely busy.
We were seated fairly quickly and Helen was our waitress.
The roast dinner was really good, but Helen was the best thing about our time there.
She was extremely helpful and friendly, despite her being so busy, and nothing was ever too much trouble.
Thank you Helen, and we hope to see you again soon.

Always a great experience, lovely pub. Service was a bit weird tonight - we were given 3 forks, 2 knives and 1 napkin between the 2 of us 😄🤦♀️ and I received half a pint of pepsi instead of a pint that I ordered but it must have been the heat. The staff were nice and polite and the food was great as usual. Best pub for sitting outdoors and enjoying a nice meal. You can also take a pleasant walk along the canal before or after.

What an amazing find. We arrived to a warm welcome, they fitted us in even though they were busy, service was a 100 %, all staff very attentive and friendly, the food was excellent and it was a lovely place to eat and unwind.
Lovely garden by the canal, caters for families and dog's are welcome.
We will be back.

The waitress was fantastic with my granddaughter. She was friendly and helpful. The moving mountains burger was amazing. There were a couple of mistakes made. My granddaughter wanted sweet potato chips and beans but got peas and normal chips. The chips were horrible as they were frozen chips.

Booked last minute for a family birthday (big one) . Very accommodating for 2 young children, good choice too. Good choice on the menu, good portions. Tasty. Ample car parking. Lovely staff, nice and clean. Would recommend highly.

Had a lovely lunch here, sat outside by the river in the sunshine. Good varied menu, although not a lot for vegetarians so ask in case they fo specials. Our waiter was Alex and he was very attentive and made us feel at home. Will definitely pay another visit.

Ate there for lunch today and the food was good. Despite it being a bit cold it was nice and sunny so we sat in the large beer garden where there was plenty of seats. Location wise this isn't the easiest venue to get to but there plenty of parking and access from the canal path if you're willing to walk there.

Great food and drinks out in the garden, only issue was the wait at the desk to see where we could sit for lunch. There was staff not busy who could spoken and asked me to wait for the desk clerk...but no they just ignored me when they weren't overly busy. I would go back as the food was great and we could cycle as its just on the Kennet and Avon canal.

Ceri was a fantastic server and maintained all three of our tables. She was so kind to us and everyone enjoyed their meal. Hailey at the desk was also amazing at accommodating all of us which we are very grateful for. Overall an amazing stay!

Took my son there with family for late lunch after graduation. We sat outside. Staff were friendly. The food was good, though not everything on the menu was available. Nice mocktails and beer choices.

The staff were incredibly lovely.
However the service and food was pretty disappointing. We arrived at 6pm it took about 15-20 minutes to get our order taken, which was a little surprising as it wasn’t greatly busy for a Sunday.
Once our order had been taken it was fairly quick for our roast to arrive. The roast was ok but the vegetables felt as though they had been boiling all day as they were soggy and disintegrated in the mouth. The potatoes were also very soft and soggy. However the meat itself was cooked ok. We also had a cauliflower cheese which was pretty disappointing and once again very stodgy.
As we hadn’t eaten all day we were starving so ate it all very quickly. It took another 15-20 minutes for our plates to be taken away and offered the dessert menu. It then took another 15 minutes or so for our order to be taken again.
This is when it began to get a bit mad as it was now just past 7pm and it took over 30 minutes for our desserts to arrive. We even got politely offered to order desserts after waiting for the last 15 minutes for them.
The desserts were nice but there was a clear communication breakdown in getting them to us. There was a lack of awareness from the staff as to how long everything was taking - there was a couple sat behind us having a very similar very slow experience.
We didn’t leave until 8pm and this wasn’t because we were slowly enjoying our meal.
The staff were very polite and it was probably just a very bad day for everyone however the food and quality didn’t live up to the other reviews I’d read before visiting. A meal for 2 with a bill of over £50 just didn’t feel like a worthwhile experience.

The service was amazing. The staff were so friendly and wonderful to us and our dog. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was quick and delicious and we did not have to wait for drinks or food. Big thanks to Ceri our server.
