Reviews of Jolly Sailor Pub & Restaurant, Southampton
G. S.
A very pleasant hidden away location. Lovely old building will low exposed beam ceilings and many great outdoor seating locations as well. Meals tasty with good portions and cheerful, willing staff. Great vegetarian and vegan options. Prices a little high compared to similar Australian venues but I would pay it again.

I first came when I was 14 with my uncle. many emotions accompany me when I come by with my family today. Thank you for keeping this wonderful place alive. Good food, nice people serving. Everything fine! We will come back and back and back again! 😉
T. H.
Beautiful location and superb ales st this Badger pub. Didn't eat this visit but will in the future. Trivia fans will remember this as a location for 80s tv show Howard's way. The surrounding area is beautiful too
S.
Lovely place for dogs!
The ploughman’s was amazing for the price And very filling lots on the plate.
This old authentic pub has a wonderful modern injection so it’s great for everyone
The views are stunning… only downfall is the stairs down the the pub there’s quite a few ( not that I mind ) going up is a workout with a full belly!
C. S.
Beautiful atmosphere, lovely outside area with electric heaters, great for sitting outdoors in winter. The inside is also so nice, the theme carries out through the whole place as well as the drinks options, providing an overall happy experience.
C. M.
Ate a really lovely meal with one of the prettiest views in my opinion.
Staff were wonderful and very welcoming. Excellent experience all round 😊
S. j. B.
Lovely view, perfect for a cold refreshing drink on a hot summers day. However, My partner booked a table for 1pm as we saw on previous reviews they had a gluten free menu. They do have a menu but with such a limitation of dishes to which I didn’t like personally. We had our drinks and left we decided to cook at home as it was easier.
D. M.
Think I'm going to spend my summer in the beer garden overlooking the water. Spend the day on the water and then finish here. Fantastic staff, food and a range of drinks. Will deffo be back. 😊
J. K.
Fantastic pub/restaurant full of character set by the picturesque waterfront. Great food and staff customer service. Accessing the venue via the steep stone staircase leading down to the pub is something to think about if you have mobility issues. Parking is available on the road but fills up quickly.
R. T.
A lovely pub overlooking the marina. It is not easy to find but is worth the trek up the hill and then down the steep stairs. They have plenty of outdoor seating as well as a comfy indoor area. There is a broad selection of draft and craft ales. The menu is good and the food is delectable. I have lost my interest in fish and chips over the years as many places don't serve good ones nowadays. The jolly sailor rekindled my taste for it and now, I can say I continue to love a good fish and chips again. It is a short walk from the train station which also has free parking.

Scene set : Sunday lunchtime, very very busy. Six of us. It goes without saying absolutely stunning setting on the banks of the River Hamble. The majority of us had roast beef, all good…. Limitless supply of Yorkshire puds 👍. Crumble and custard lovely. Thanks to our waitress Emma who really looked after us. Apologies for ‘being slow’…. It didn’t matter we were relaxed.
T. F.
Read some random article in the Daily Echo that lead me to this place, finally, the Echo was good for something. 10/10 location, staff and food! My first roast since lockdown and definitely won't be my last here.
D. D.
Popped in for a cool beverage and ended up having a meal! I'm gluten free, and was handed a 'gluten free' menu, I was also given information on food amendments on another menu...so so helpful and our meals were delicious! Extremely friendly staff...felt very relaxed and welcome, beautiful scenery across the water...
Definitely will be going back and recommend to my friends and family.
D. T.
Nice place food over priced. £14 for a ploughman's which was very dry and over slated the scotch egg which nearly made sick.
P. C.
Great Riverside pub with good food and beers. Pontoon spaces but can get busy , more pontoon room would be even better. Give it some thought guys ?
D. B.
Hidden. Hard to access. Made it all worth the while. Even the walk to fro was lively!
I. B.
Great location country pub with views and tasty food
B. S.
Lovely pub located right at the waters edge. Famous as the local for the popular 80s TV series 'Howard's Way'. Sunday roast was passable but could be better (beef was a bit fatty). Well worth a visit!
K. M.
Great seating choices along the harbour, outdoors and semi outdoors giving you air and a breeze but shelter. Food is good but in my opinion a bit over priced but I'm not rich!! Some food needed a little more flavour but that's a couple of items on the menu.
M. O.
Much improved over another recent visit. Warm, cosy, good service and lovely food. A great selection of drinks and some seasonal favourites including mulled wine too. Very welcoming after a cold winter walk.
A. L.
Excellent food. Service and atmosphere. Loved it .
M. H.
Had our Christmas dinner there, OMG what a meal. All 3 courses were amazing and so much tasy food. The staff were brilliant and were back and forth making sure there was nothing we needed throughout. Definitely recommend it - well done team
a. d.
Fabulous eating location thoroughly enjoyed our visit, sadly to access the restaurant is difficult with a steep decline down steps. Highly recommended if you don’t have any walking or health issues. 👍
J. D.
Great beer and food offerings. It's right on the Hamble and even has its own pontoon. Head up there on a "brewers tide" and enjoy a nice lunch with (hopefully) enough water to get you back.
M. B.
A really nice pub with a lovely location by the water, nice food and atmosphere.
Probably a slightly difficult venue for anyone with walking difficulties as it's down a fairly steep slope or set of steps
I. E.
Super experience post Covid. Simple ordering, no app download needed just a qr code and it’s easy. Staff really helpful and service great.
Location is as it always has been, awesome, and it’s great that this pub and restaurant will continue to thrive!
The iconic photos of the stars of Howard’s way remain!
M. T.
Very welcoming, enthusiastic and flexible new staff. The pub has had a recent, tasteful, subtle make over of the interior with some nice new artwork. The log fire is still there and lit every day during this winter. I understand there are plans to refit the jetty outside seating area for the summer.
Whether you've booked a table or just popping in for a drink you'll now feel equally welcome to enjoy the pub. Tip.. visit between 3pm and 6pm for a quiet drink as the pub is open all day.
J. R.
It was nice enough, here for mum's birthday meal. Good was alright would rush back, some staff really friendly others literally its like you are bothering them.
L. D.
Lovely location but parking could be a problem. Steps down to the pub/seating which look like they are lit up at night time.
Only ordered a side dish as we had stopped for lunch before hand.
Good facilities and nice view.
Just a shame the fries weren't as advertised on the menu.
R. S.
10.30 in the morning and the first pint of the day on a 6 pub, pub crawl. The Jolly Sailor was quiet as the world was still waking up but I was pondering life over a fantastic pint of Tangle Foot which was well kept. Inside it's very cosy with plenty of places to sit, and good views over the harbour. I can imagine it would be lovely in the evening. There is seating outside too great on a summer's day. Recommended.
J. W.
Popped in during a ramble along the Hamble. A very friendly welcome. Incredible views of the river. A great place for a night out with food or even just a coffee. Outstanding!
S. C.
Nice little cozy eating place by the Hamble river. We discovered this place by chance while exploring surrounding Swanwick. We had fish and chips and it tasted simply fab. Fantastic service. Friendly staff. Credit cards accepted but not Amex. As the place is by the waterfront, we could also go out and be up close by the boats passing by. Highly recommended.
S. B.
Hadn't been here for a number of years and ended up going twice in one week! Love!y location with views of the River Hamble and its boats. Access to pub is downhill via steps so not ideal for everyone. Various seating areas inside and out. Food is nice but expensive. Depending on your choice, portions vary too. A pleasant visit on both occasions and would recommend.
H. D.
What a beautiful hidden gem! Beautiful views, plenty of seating areas, friendly staff, tasty food.
F. H.
Nice food, lovely pub and ok outside seating. The only downside is there is very limited parking outside the pub. You can park at the station, for free, and walk up. However the path is very steep to get to the pub and then the access down to the pub is also steep. I understand this is due to the location and they have tried to make it as accessible as possible but this is not a place for wheelchair users.
J. S.
Amazing pub and location: full of charm and cosiness! Good beer selection, (real) coffee, great food (although wasn't that impressed with the crab but then it did say brown and white). Very friendly.
P. D.
We go here as a family a lot and our visit last Saturday didn’t disappoint. Three adults (well loosely) and two under 6 year olds in total. We started off outside in the bamboo area. The weather was iffy but we were told they would make space if we needed to break for cover! We had burgers and sandwiches which were lovely. The fries are always good there - my brother ate most of everyone’s. We had a few drinks - nothing too outrageous but the service was prompt and very friendly. Dessert was good, the chocolate torte and cheesecake went down well. We did have to decamp inside due to rain but it was no stress.
Love that the team there all wear striped tops, a very nautical look and every member of staff was happy to help and friendly to our children.
They have amazing artwork for sale on the walls, you’ll be tempted (but have to dig deep for an impulse purchase).
It’s a solid 5 stars for me. The only thing that could have improved it was the weather, but I’ll cut them some slack for that! ☀️ 🍹 🛥

Centuries of sailors have wet their whistles in this authentic harborside pub. I was last there in 2001 and can happily say nothing has changed.
R. B.
Fantastic Food, atmosphere and service!
H. R.
My very first SUP on the River Hamble was followed by a lovely Sunday lunch with a river view. Would recommend - we arrived by car but decidedvyou could arrive by board.
R. H.
We celebrated a milestone birthday at the Jolly Sailor. For a sailor (naturally). Loved the fact that the food went beyond 'pub food'. The menu catered for all our palates and the food was delicious. Service excellent too.
W. F. S.
This a beautiful Olde world public house/Restaurant sitting on the waterside with the view of the marinas. It's our local pub and a favourite to go to for a treat to sit outside with a couple of shandies watching the boats. It's got a lot of history as well as a bit of tv fame from the 80's . The interior compliments it's past with a warming cosy feel. The open working fire place with its cosy table to the side is much desired when we have been out doing the Christmas shopping nip in for a rest before heading home. The staff are welcoming, good range of speciality beers/ales. The food always looks plentiful in portions size costing is above average in pricing but with the atmosphere it's worth every penny.
T. A.
Nice place, fantastic views. Perfect place to stop for a drink. Very disappointed with the "gluten free" menu, so couldn't eat here, which was a shame
R. P.
An almost magical place with one of the nicest views in town and well attended by charming waiters. And the food and drinks are superb too. It's a perfect place for business and family-related conversations.
E. J.
Never disappointed, best views in Bursledon, food is always lovely, friendly staff
J. T.
Lovely staff great location but the Steak wasn't great and the service was slow and it didn't appear very busy, but my mother and children enjoyed their meals so mine must have been the exception (possibly)
S. C.
Fantastic location, but not good for easy access.
L. S.
Fabulous view and food was good. Brian had the fish and chips which he really enjoyed. I had the tuna salad ... very tasty but tuna slightly overcooked. A really good experience!
J. B.
The staff were wonderful, the food was amazing and even though we were told there was a wait on food, we were still served promptly to a high standard. Our waitress Steph was so friendly, great experience!
B. F.
Lovey location, Good food although on this occasion service a little slow, 45 minute between starter and main (It was busy). Staff friendly and helpful, we will be back
D. M.
It hurts me to have to say this but this place is.... idyllic!!!! It's full of old beams and creaking oak floors. Real wood fires and and a great selection of ales and wines as well as spirits. The staff were great, helpful and friendly and efficient with their service. The menu is excellent!!! All tastes and diets catered for and if you check it out on line you can filter the menu for your particular needs.... wonderful. It does get busy so booking for peak times is definitely advised. The views are of the river Hamble and its accompanying assorted moored vessels. Optional seating outside by the river... so relax and soak in the sea air and marine atmosphere. Just up by the bridge is a great fishmonger... definitely worth a visit!! Enjoy!!!!
P. K.
Great pub for dinning or a few drinks, all set in the old Bursledon, by the river front..Very magical and romantic place, no access with buggys or wheelchair.
M. C.
Popular pub in great location, we found service was poor, young waiter struggled with plates and was grumpy, food was very small portions for the expensive price, sadly would not recommend, parking risky down very narrow lane
J. L.
Lovely place with views of river. Not easy to access for anyone with mobility problems. We had a very good lunch here.
J. W. J.
The first time I came, it was in a large group. I got fish and chips. It was good, but nothing great. However, tonight I was convinced to give it another go and it was fantastic. The beer is always good. I ordered the fish and chips and it was awesome! Crunchy bit where it was suppose to be, while moist and flaky in the middle. Toss in some fat chips and some proper mushy peas and you have a meal that is very satisfying. I'll be back!
X. T.
Great food and staff. Restaurant is beautiful. Just a little awkward to get to.
C. 9.
Lovely atmosphere, lovely and helpful staff. Unfortunately my duck was so tough I couldn't get any meat off. Other than that, superb, starter as pictured was outstanding
T.
Impromptu Friday night visit to this great little pub on the Hamble river, the atmosphere was relaxing so decided to stay and have dinner. I had Chicken & Mushroom pie and my partner had Rose veal. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. When you leave you work off a little of those calories by climbing back up to the car. But worth it. Will be back again soon.
B. H.
Lovely little pub in a great location staff helpful enough downside is they don’t take cash and it’s a bit on the expensive side .
J. B.
Let's face it I am a bit of a Karen when it comes to my food and my lunch partner today is a chef - we both agree that the food was excellent. I had the warm beetroot and falafel salad, usually a starter but served for me as a main, and he had the steak med rare and declared perfect! Followed by orange choc torte for me and cheese board for him.
Only reason the 4 star review is service was a little haphazard, staff were multi tasking in a very busy area and we had to ask 3 times for dessert menus - if I could award 9.9 I would!
Word of caution, while waiting (for what certainly seems to be hand made food so a wait definitely necessary and worthwhile) we watched others being served and started to suffer food envy, it all looked so good.
Must try the fish cakes on my next visit!
L. D.
Really loved pub, with a beautiful outdoors area. It has a deck which people can moor up at.
S. V.
Pretty pub. Lovely waterside location. Drinks - were drinks.
Lunch - minuscule portion of mediterranean vegetable quiche made of... Mushed veggies. And a tiny tangle of undressed watercress and raw onion. Calamari was admittedly lovely... Wonderful batter. But served with LEMON Custard. Literally - sweet lemon custard with a few herbs in it. Weird as hell.
Basically - London prices and disappointing food. I'd come here again for the drinks and the view but never again for food!
d. s.
One of the best meals I have had for a long time. The steak and ale pie is to die for. Hell of a walk but so worth it. We'll worth a visit. Very hard to please an ex chef but they did it in style.
d.
Haven't been here for a while, but it hasn't changed much. Still good beer and great food. The best thing though, is the view onto the Hamble river and the boats moored up.
T. F.
If you’re going by road it’s quite hard to get the The Jolly Sailor, easier by boat almost and mooring is usually possible. Follow the signs carefully and leave time to find a parking space.
Wider cars may struggle if parking on the road as it’s very narrow and if you drive all the way to the pub be prepared to three point turn as it’s on a dead end road.
Booking for food is advisable as it’s usually busy.
The pub is well kept, clean and tidy, and there’s plenty of table space both inside and out, with some tables by the water or more sheltered ones on the hill side the of the pub. Many covered in case of rain.
The food is very good, and served by polite efficient staff who were happy to accommodate us with two young children (at lunchtime).
Only one minor negative, and I’d still recommend the place as reasonable value, it was on the expensive side for good pub food - (and it was good) it’s not fine dining and their prices are probably accounting for the waterside location and boating crowd.
L. H.
Enjoyed a nice lunch with a view at this secluded little pub, which overlooks the Hamble
V. H.
Sitting in the shade, watching the boats and eating great fish n chips. The staff are great, attentive and quick. Definitely recommended and worth the steps to reach it.
C. W.
Incredibly good upscale pub with superb location and view. Staff were extremely friendly and polite. Outside seating areas are excellent, interior decor has wow factor and the toilets were fantastically clean and nice (which is such a relief when you have young children with you). Children received an entertainment bag with really nice quality bits and bobs to keep them occupied and very happy. We stopped off at The Jolly Sailor for drinks and dessert before setting off for the motorway for our 3.5hour journey home from holiday and you made us a very happy final holiday memory. We will certainly look forward to returning. Really well done to all staff and management. 👏🏆👍
J. B.
Lovely location and the rest of our party had pretty good food but my gnocchi was a tiny serving and the pesto wasn’t fresh. At this price I would expect more.
M.
Lovely pub. Lovely location. Extremely friendly staff. Great place for a drink and to watch the world go by
Z. h.
Pulled up on kayaks for a drink, but we have eaten here before. Always super friendly staff and a beautiful location.
P. M.
Nice pub, parking is a bit tricky however but food is good, Riverside location.
T. W.
A real hidden gem. An amazing pub situated off the beaten track. A fantastic spot right by the river.
J. H.
Lovely location, lush food and great staff.
J. W.
I have known tjis place for 65 years...have seen many changes but its hospitaly remains wonderful. Great location, food and ales...staff excellent too...thank you!
V. M.
Really love pub on the water. Great atmosphere, excellent steak and very friendly, helpful staff
H. W.
Lovely rustic pub next to the water - tide out but no problem! Warm, friendly atmosphere and buzzy during day on New Years' Eve. Still festive with fab decorations, real fire and great water views. Lovely staff and service - only minor 'complaint' was the the scallop with cauliflower dish I ordered was very bland. It could do with some lardons or some other complimentary addition to make it more flavoursome.. otherwise will be back as loved my visit - my first!
M. H.
Great little pub with spectacular views. Right next to the station if you are willing to walk up a hill and down lots of steps. I took my mobility disabled fiencé and struggled a bit helping her. But she thought it was totally worth it. Wheelchair un-accessible
ג. מ.
Beautiful location on the shore. Food is ok. The description is better than the taste.
C. P.
Beautiful location on the River Hamble. Able to access via boat as well as a short walk from a free car park. Staff friendly and helpful, perfect for a sunny day when you can sir outside, or for a colder day there are some great tables with stunning views.
L. I.
Lovely little pub (not much parking though). The staff were really friendly and helpful. The food was amazing.
The views whilst eating lunch was lovely too.
There are a lot of steps down and up to the pub.
T. B.
Incredible food, great service and very lovely location. Came here with my girlfriend for a cosy and romantic evening and it was perfect. I only wish our waitress was a bit friendlier and actually smiled! I’m fully aware that she could have had some bad news or a rubbish day but I always think you should remain professional and warm. This is the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5. Highly recommend the place!
M. M.
Popped in foe a drink during a walk. Lovely location on the river, staff were efficient and friendly.
S. M. (.
Had a lovely lunch here, fish finger cob was really nice, quick service and would recommend
M. T.
Had a superb lunch really nice menu, good service pretty location
P. R.
What a great pub, terrific location if a bit of a puzzle to drive to. Had an evening meal and pint overlooking Swanwick marina where we'd just arrived from Falmouth. The terrace outside looked amazing in the dark, another day perhaps.
C. P.
Incredible location and really attentive staff. However the kids chips were absolutely saturated in salt. To be fair they replaced them (with the wrong type of chips) and deducted the meal.
The roast pork was tasty and my wife said the nut roast was delicious, but none of the food was very hot.
I'd visit again - perhaps we were just unlucky as it seemed like a decent place.
J. P.
My ideal afternoon in the sun beautiful location ,lovely walk from station car park ,beautiful setting.food and service was very acceptable ,lovely staff.sun shining with people I love.perfect.well recommended. Cant wait to go back !!
s. d.
Very good pub, very friendly staff. The food was great and location perfect. Will definitely return on next visit to Hamble. Would definitely recommend.
P. G.
The Jolly Sailor located right by the Hamble River accessed by a steep well lit path / steps from the aptly well named Lands End Road above, the establishment has both an oldie worldly look from above as you descend down to it, you have plenty of choice to sit outside or like us sit inside this contemporary pub.
The food is especially good plenty of choice, taste catered for the staff serving it polite and cheerful, for our party of 4 about £34 / per person including soft drinks, starters for 3 and 4 mains no puddings (as of July 2021 prices may vary).
For us the atmosphere was perfect not to noisy so able to enjoy our evening meal and family get together with everyone else at this popular venue served by both the public and boating community, we will be looking to come back soon to sample its fair soon, so book your meal now you won't be disappointed.....😀
K. P.
Lovely place to eat. Great food and superb view
N. C.
Great staff. Very friendly and knowledgeable of the area.
J. L.
Nice staff, location nice (if you like boats and water). Not sure about access, only way we found in was a flight of steep stone stairs. Worth a look during this hot weather.
C. C.
It's a lovely pub with delicious food and friendly staff. We found it difficult to get to, a lot of steps for two out of the three of us have dodgy knees and use a stick.
K. C.
The Jolly is a great place to sit and watch the world go by during the summer; and on a cold windy dark February evening it’s a friendly, cosy place for a chat over excellent food.
It really is a lovely old storied pub, low oak beams with a light fresh interior.
The food, however, has also had a refurb and they clearly have someone in the kitchen who likes cooking.
I had the mid week special which was a blade steak on a rocket and Parmesan salad, with tempura onions which were mind-blowing - it was such a well executed combo. I’d ordered the triple cooked chips as a side but they honestly weren’t needed.
We also had potato&beetroot fritters as a start with wasabi mayo . The fritters were so light, they were genuinely impressive. The mayo had a great balance of wasabi hit which complemented the dish well.
Plenty of vegan options from start, mains and dessert, with fish and meat well represented too.
The service was polite warm and friendly, there is nothing to fault and plenty to recommend.
Two starters, two mains, two sides, wine, OJ and sparkling came to just north of £60.
N. C.
Brilliant pub. Accessible by water or foot and does gluten free options.
D. S.
Great food and Service. Staff very friendly and lovely views, as you can see from my photo 😊
J. J.
Yummy food, very quick service and dog friendly. Visited with my mum and my dog. She had fish and chips and I had steak and ale pie. The food was very hot and delicious. Plus a pot of tea with tea leaves. The staff were very friendly.
T. S.
Fantastic location with good, caring and attentive staff. The food was excellent and a great relaxing atmosphere with family, both young and old! The only issue to be aware of is the many steps or slope down to the waters edge, believe me tough it is worth it.
G. C.
Went here yesterday and loved it here. The food and drink was lovely beside the gorgeous stove
S. P.
This is a very quaint and charming rural pub and eatery that is set in a great waterside location right next to the Hamble River and which offers great views of the bustling Swanwick Marina. It's waterside location (with a jetty that is) means that it is just as easy to get there by boat as it is by car.
K. N.
Great food, ambiance and lovely surroundings. Even better that you can walk from Bursledon Station and drink wine in the sunshine. Love the idea of the charity meal where the pub donates 25p to their chosen charity when you purchase. Meals around £14 upwards but decent portions and very tasty.
J. D.
Nice food and good ale. Lovely place to visit when you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Southampton
V. R.
A well placed, clean and tidy pub right on the water. We didn't eat but 3 guest ales and the usual Badger bottled beers, an extensive range of wines too. Friendly staff. Only slight issue is that accessibility might prove difficult as the descent to the pub involves steep steps... love it and we are coming back!
G. G.
Amazing pub with a spectacular view. A bit hard to find parking space and it's location it's a bit hard to get to, but worth it!
C. D.
Amazing location for this pub where beautiful food is served by friendly staff
D. R.
Lovely pub with great food and awesome views of the Hamble.
C. B.
Location excellent, I also had the steak pie which was also excellent. Price isn't ridiculous either considering the location. Love it here
Update. Been back for first time in over a year. Still just as good. Also love the matching uniforms. Good job
B. W.
Beautifully placed by the River, great staff, wonderful food, stunning surroundings.
N. R.
What a lovely place overlooking the Hamble river, easy access down on to the public slip way just at the end of the road and a nice place to stop for a drink or something to eat after spending some time down at the river
R. S.
My husband and I enjoyed a lovely meal here while on holiday in the area. It was superb and the staff were extremely friendly and efficient. We were made to feel very welcome and comfortable especially with all things covid related.
we will definitely be returning.
D. S.
Nice staff, good food and good beer in a great location!
L. H.
Very cool waterside pub - excellent for soaking up the rays and watching the various levels of skill on the paddleboards!
S. B.
Staff were nice and the location is lovely, right by the water. Didn't go inside so I can't comment on the decor. My issue was the food. The menu was very limited but that wasn't a major issue. I ordered a chicken burger. The chicken was very thin and small, and totally over cooked and dry as a bone. It wasn't just mine either. The only differing thing ordered to our table was a cheese burger. It was also very dry and over cooked. It's a shame as the food used to be great. All 6 ofvus were equally disappointed by the food. I have recently been telling friends to check it out but based on my experiences from a few years back. Sadly I won't be recommending it quite so readily now :-( To end on a high, it was just the food that was the issue. Everything else was fine.
K. J.
Great food and fabulous staff and even more fabulous was the view 😍

...well done chef..delicious leak potato pie for vegetarian
M. W.
Had a lovely meal here recently. Staff were excellent and very helpful / friendly. Went on a week night, so wasn't busy. Free parking. Dog friendly.
R.
Staff & setting are wonderful, shame food didn't meet that standard.
P. H.
This is a lovely pub, with a good atmosphere, but found it to have a very limited menu, and poor access to people who are less able on their feet.
G. P.
Such a cute pub - free parking at Bursledon station and it is a short walk away (though up a steep hill and then down many steps, so not an easily accessible pub for those with disabilities/mobility difficulties).
Lovely to sit outside with the dog and look out over the water while enjoying a drink. Though we didn't eat on this occasion, the menu seems to have a few veggie options so I'm sure we will be back for food soon.
P. S.
Stunning location for this Hall & Woodhouse pub and eatery. My own local pub is The Monmouth Ash so it was great to have a familiar brew (Tanglefoot) in my glass!
R. C.
Excellent location on the Hamble Marina. Remembered it from the Howard's Way TV Series. My wife and I always wanted to visit and as we were holidaying in the area, this was our chance. The ambience was perfect, it was a bright sunny day 06/10/2021and we were on a short break in Hayling Island with a friend. Dogs are welcome, there was a good menu and a good range of drinks. The staff were very attentive. In our eyes it was brilliant. Would definitely recommend
M. B.
One of my favourite places. Great food, service and superb scenery of the river and boats.
G. F.
Nice place to stop for a refreshing drink. Can get busy but wasn't when I stopped by for a walk on my way home from work.
L. G.
I have visited this pub since I was a teenager. Although it has seen a few changes in layout over the years, it is still a great pub. Only downside nowadays is stand up paddle boarders lifting their boards out of the water and leaving them on the pontoon. So if you come by boat, be prepared to have to climb over their boards to tie your boat up and even getting off the pontoon can be a challenge.
C. P.
What a lovely place to hang out with a well earned pint or two after an afternoon on the Hamble!
D. W.
This is a great hidden gem of a pub, which has lots of character, the staff are helpful and friendly explaining how the covid rules work in an easy to understand way with out drama. The menu choice is good with prices being reasonable. we enjoyed the sharing camembert with the red pepper and onion relish being a real surprise on how good it was with the camembert. The real ale choices are good with Tangle Foot being very nice and well presented. I had fish and chips which was also nice. Sadly in these times you really do need to book in advance to get a table as its a very popular place.
S. M.
Nice place to go but personally not so keen on the beers and prices.
T. V.
Absolutely beautiful setting but unfortunately the food was disappointing. I ordered the scallop starter (for £12) and it has 3 tiny scallops that were stuck to the bottom of the shell so you couldn't eat the whole thing. I also had a mozerella salad that was missing 2 of the listed components and had the scrappiest bits of mozerella you've ever seen. The staff were faultless though and were very welcoming to our dog, gave her a bowl of water and some treats. Would come back again but not for food.
l. r.
Lovely food great staff
Beautiful setting
Couldn't ask for me
L. Z.
Lovely pub with great food.
R. J.
DELICIOUS Sunday Roast and Apple tart pudding 😋
When the sun is shining this place us a gem.
Not sure about the makeover...very modern art!
Shame they got rid of the pubs history and BBC series link.
Would like to see a pub lead in reasonable priced soft drinks for the driver of the group #justanidea
B. S.
Charming, lovely and welcoming pub by and on the waterfront. Great find on our travels.
A. P.
What a fantastic find! Superb location, friendly attentive staff, excellent food and great range of drinks plus dog friendly for those with furry guests! Highly recommended.
M. W.
Great views, super food and a great range of ale. Will be back soon.
T. G.
Excellent atmosjere beer, food and service.
J. H.
Great service and great food. We were able to use our gourmet card too so saved a fortune. We were a group of 8, and reserved a table over the phone the day before no problems. They gave us kids packs so the kids could colour in and stuff. I had a burger with fries, 10/10. Would definitely eat here again
C. B.
We thought quite carefully about the venue for our meal with friends and having visited this pub on many occasions over the last 35 years we were confident that the menu would be excellent along with the service despite the Covid challenges. Well we were not disappointed, the menu was varied and interesting and the service was really first class despite the severe challenges that waiting staff must face. We always had friendly and smiley service and the pubs attention to detail when it came to keeping customers and staff safe was impressive. I think they nailed it and thanks in particular to our friendly waitress Keira who looked after us really well.
C. F.
Cracking little boozer, could do with some decent guest ales! Other than that top notch. 👌
S. M.
Very nice staff that cater our needs. Food and beer was excellent.
T. M.
A very nice pub indeed. Lovely river views with plenty of outdoor seating and a pontoon if you fancy arriving by boat. The food and drink can be on the more expensive side, but well worth the money. My friend and I particularly enjoying popping in for an afternoon drink. Plenty of parking as well.
T.
My wife and I visited for lunch and took advantage of the "Help out to eat out" offer which the pub had extended into September. The pub has a great little garden area with views of the River Hamble but we sat inside as the weather was on the cool and damp side.
We felt very safe as the pub has strict protocols in place for Covid-19. We had a nice table by a window and the food was excellent arriving quickly and was nicely presented. All the staff are friendly and attentive with a special mention to "Ellie" who served us. She was lovely and a credit to the pub.
Highly recommended but if you are eating book in advance to avoid disappointment. We will definitely return.
Ф. К.
Great service on a Sunday afternoon. Lovely food. Well done to the waiting staff.
J. H.
We arrived yesterday about 7.40 pm. Sadly a fair bit of the menu was had run out, but we had the fish and chips but there wasn't any mushy peas left either. The meal was lovely. My other half is a head chef and he is happy to return again soon. Lovely place, fabulous views, friendly staff and quick service. Highly recommend.
G. S.
A wonderful location and a famous watering hole but the food was disappointing and cold. The very young inexperienced staff, though willing, made quite a few hours with the food and drink orders...only 3 if us!
Great shame the food wasn't better because this could be a wonderful place
P. M.
Lovely walk from Warsash to the jolly via Hamble. Had a good meal and enjoyed the tanglefoot! Great service, very attentive staff , nice lunch. Thank you
D. W.
Nice fish and chips, but you pay a high price for the location. Also why faff with a tiny ramekin of crushed peas. Just put them on the plate, maybe you would get a few more then.
j. H.
Great First visit. Nothing to fault food and staff were excellent. Can't wait to return.
E. M.
The food was ok and the service was a bit slow. The atmosphere is nice. If you're in the area, I recommend stopping in.
T. F.
Awesome place to come and sit by the water and sip on a nice drink. The views are fantastic from here and it's very chilled and relaxed. It's an old pub with lots of nice beams and lots of character. The food is a tad on the expensive side so it's nice to come and have a drink and chill with friends and/or family. Note you park up on the road and then walk down steps to the pub. Alot of steps so not ideal for persons with mobility issues.
D. H.
Slow service but beer did come out OK once order was in. But the roast pork was very small for the money. 3 halves of potato was disgraceful.. 2 florets of broccoli
1 hr into Sunday lunch service and only 1 pork left. No crackling untill we asked for it..
Won't be doing a roast there again.
C. A.
Last there 25 years ago. Went back for a special family reason and it did not disappoint. In fact the food was great and the atmosphere even better than i remembered. Good beers, by the way. Terrace would have been fine on a sunny day. View over the river to the right is lovely. Otherwise a tidal, working marina environment with some well-loved yachts and some expensive motor boats.
C. L.
A beautiful and serene so calm, peaceful, and untroubled; tranquil in fact most relaxing environment by the waters edge. Whatever the time of day. Very fine food and service is par excellence. New coffee brand is great to. Highly recommended for a great meal out.
c. W.
A steep climb down but so worth it, we have been coming here on and off for years. Very safe covid wise, friendly staff. Excellent food. Best to book as it is very popular
S. H.
Service wasn't as good as I would have wished. We were greeted and shown to our table and told someone would be along to take our drinks order. We sat for 10 minutes waiting and trying to catch a server's eye then gave up and went to the bar. Good selection of food but my starter was missing the avocado. This was corrected then a little later an adjoining table had the same issue. Happy with quality of food and beer. It wasn't particularly busy that evening.
P. S.
Fantastic place to eat. Better to reserve a table really. Plenty of tables and lovely spot to eat lunch or dinner.
Good range of food and price is a little more than I'd pay but food was excellent.
The actual pub is down some steps. It's quite steep but worth the walk.
Great range of beers and wines.
A. H.
A lovely pub in a beautiful location. Good beer but an average roast (I had pork). Top staff and clean throughout. Well worth a visit.
J. S.
Excellent covid awareness and friendly staff. Tasty food but limited menu at present.easy to Book in table for mid week. Lovely view of boats would be great on a sunny day.
R. E.
Good food and great atmosphere.
K. H.
Not been here for a while. Happy to report the ambience is as good as ever and the food is great.
T. C.
Lovely, historical pub. Friendly staff
H. C.
Very nice pub, nicely decorated on the inside, friendly staff and great food
A. S.
Fantastic location on the Riverside. Great food. Lovely staff.
R. M.
Lovely meal. Salmon pave perfectly cooked. Others enjoyed their meals. We were worried about slow service but food brought out quickly. Service friendly with great kids entertainment pack.
c. S.
Great pub
A.
Service was extremely slow, main meal took over 30 minutes to arrive. No one coming up to check if everything was okay, no offers of drink refills. Even trying to pay I had to go up to the bar because I'd waited over 10 minutes.
The online ordering system is totally rubbish, they say everything can come at once... Why the kitchen can't see what's a starter and what a main meal is, is bizarre.
M. F.
Lovely location. Staff were nice. Hummus starter was a bit on the small side. I had steak pie for mains, which was one of the nicest I've had: fairly small (standard in pubs now) but packed with tender meat in rich dark gravy. Chips were nice but could have had slightly more. Wife had aubergine curry which she said was nice but not hearty enough (there wasn't much in terms of aubergine and other veggies in the sauce) probably could do with some kind of nan bread or paratha. IPA was lovely. We didn't try the desserts but we would come back again in the future.
D. S.
We went there for lunch, the quality and portion of the food was very good. I had the burger which was very tasty, the kids portions were a little on the large side for our 4 and 2 year old but again the food was very nice. A decent selection of ales and drinks. The interior is nicely done although was a bit draughty by the window. This place is probably lovely in the summer when the sun is out
E. V.
Great food, views and atmosphere. Lots of character
A. O.
The menu online doesn’t match the one in the restaurant. No buffalo wings at all.
At 2pm they had run out of roast lamb. On a Sunday. Had the breadboard starter instead, butter straight from fridge. Roast beef was good, staff seemed to try hard, but not trained enough? Sort of panicky.
Reserved a table, but was sat too close to the bar. Very noisy. The last point dropped it from 4 to 3 stars. Great for a pint / snack, less for full on meal. Plus we waited 1 hour between courses.
S. S.
Lovely setting and good food.
A. K.
Favourite pub in the world. Food was great and 20% off too which was a nice suprise. 3 courses and 2 drinks each for under £100 was excellent value for the quality served up.
D. W.
First visit here. Car park handy as parking near to pub is a bit hit and miss for space. A steep walk for some but wow. Lovely views lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Food was delicious and served by friendly team. Worth the hike.
M. M.
A very nice pub, Always lovely food and great views. The stairs and path down could be tricky for people with mobility issues and/or children in push chairs
J. H.
Beautifully situated overlooking the Hamble river/solent.
J. P.
I called in and booked a table, easy process and got a text reminder. Really impressed with the pub itself. Great location and really good food. I recommend the beetroot fritters to start.
C. W.
Lunch was delicious, nice wine list, good service.
Evening meal later same day was not so good. Food order taken incorrectly, & food not as good, shame as it's a lovely place
E. K.
Beautiful pub in the most idyllic setting.
Good quality food especially the rib eye steak for 2 which was exceptional.
The only gripe I have is that the service could have been better.
The staff appear very young and came across quite short and cold. They were not dressed appropriately and didn't have the right manner to represent the quality of this beautiful place.
S. F.
Wonderful ambiance at this pub, and set in the most beautiful boating harbour. Not the sort of place you'd wish to visit, however, if you were in a wheelchair or suffered with arthritis as the steps down to the pub are plentiful, and it's the only access there is. The menu is QUITE pricey, but adventurous, and I like a bit of adventure. Parking can be an issue, but it's worth the trip.
T. M.
Absolutely lovely old pub with a traditional pub atmosphere. There's plenty of outdoor seating, and a pontoon if you're arriving by river. The food is very nice as well. It can be a touch pricey, but that's the only fault.
T. C.
Bit sad to be sat in isolated, non-view corner having booked well in advance, but food excellent and service very good too.
Best visited in fine weather, night or day.
Great location. Still had lovely evening.
T.
Found the menu to be better in a weekday, we went for a sunday roast and it wasn't as good. Plus, not many options on Sunday if your a veggie, especially if you can't have dairy! More vegan dishes please!
Lovely building and lovely location. Lots of steep steps down to get there, be aware!
R. O.
Great vegetarian food. Lovely outlook
R. M.
Great food, great location, great atmosphere!
T. C.
Always love going to this pub, it's calming, it's bustling, it's full of life, the food and drink are first class, the atmosphere is awesome, the views are so good 🙌 A most beautiful pub, a step or two from the train station, looking at the water, with a couple of pretty painted figureheads.
M. L.
Was an excellent evening the food was excellent the staff were friendly & attentive would definitely recommend a visit to this very lovely pub on the perfect location on the harbour and savour the good food.
J. T.
This has been a favorite spot for summer pub since my childhood. great place to go down and watch and participate in the Bursledon regatta. I love leaving you and it's crowded at least the people are friendly. unless crowded days a good place to grab a meal as the food is generally quite good and the beer plentiful.
D. L.
Great pub by the river. Good food. Great outside space for sunny days and cosy indoors (I'm sure it's great in the winter!). It is pretty pricey for drinks (£19 for 2 gin and tonics and 2 soft drinks) and there was a very long wait on food (over 1 hour and that was on a week night so can't imagine what it would be like on weekends!).
J. C.
Good food, great location for us as we we were on our boat at Swanwick for a few days.
S. C.
I have dietary issues and the menu offered choices, which is rare. The staff were very accommodating and answered questions fully & honestly. The starters arrived promptly after ordering, as the waitress got to the table with her "lazy man's load!" the prawns tipped onto the newly cleaned table. Despite us telling her not to worry about it and that we wouldn't be eating the shells, she quickly brought us some more.
One of our party was vegans and there was a good choice for her too.
All very tasty and not silly portions
R. S.
Met some friends as a halfway point, atmosphere and service was great. Enjoyable meal too 👍
J. T.
Very nice and rustic little pub. The best thing is that you can get from it from the water slide or land side. If you're going by land, there is very little parking so it may be worth parking at the train station.
R. L.
Nice rustic atmosphere and a lovely jetty that leads on to the river hamble. A perfect pit stop for any hungry or thirsty kayakers. Staff were friendly and the food was outstanding.Great Pub.
G. W.
Excellent meal. Well presented well done chef and sincere thanks to the two wonderful waiters our Canadian daughter in law, was very impressed with the excellent service.
P. L.
The best Sunday roast this year by far (and its 22nd Dec..!) Beef perfectly roasted, super tender and still red in the middle. Vegetables were a good spread, crisp but well cooked, Yorkshires were particularly good and fresh and absolutely perfect. Staff helpful, friendly and attentive. Perfect in every way. Amazing. Falafel was also perfect. Home made horseradish..apparently? A1 couldn't do better...thank you! Also decor and surrounds a huge improvement including the toilets, great! Top job from bottom to top
J. O.
This is a lovely pub, serving excellent food and drink. This is only enhanced by the fact that you have a wonderful view out over the water, and you can arrive by boat and moor up on their pontoon. About the only downside is that car parking is pretty limited, and you often end up having to park by the train station and walk the rest of the way.
M. B.
Very busy but very pleasant
D.
Went here for lunch with my wife, it's not as good as when we last visited a couple of years ago but has nice pub grub and what I'd class as medium priced. Be warned though because its on a river there's a steep walk down to it. Even worse on way back after a couple or shall we say many drinks.
H. B.
I really enjoy coming to the Jolly Sailor. Such a beautiful relaxed environment by the water. So welcoming to dogs. The food is always of a good standard. Although my visit today the only issue was the chicken liver pâte lacked in flavour and the cream for the puddinga was over whipped but the rest was lovely. The roast dinner is always a good choice!
D. K.
Just wonderful. The staff are so friendly and accommodating, and the food is reasonably priced and delicious. Add to that the fact that they are super COVID aware and have beautiful views you can't really go wrong.
S. H.
Lovely quaint pub tucked away over looking the marina. I didn't eat there but it seemed popular. Dog friendly. Lovely atmosphere. Will definately be coming back. You need to be fit as up a hill and lots of steps.
S. W.
Really tasty pork roast and beautiful view
A.
Popped in after a work related event and WOW what a fantastic little spot!! The staff were Very polite and helpful, with a great selection of drinks and food!! We had the fish and chips and it without a shadow of a doubt it was the best we've had for a long time!!! Look forward to my next visit!
"Thank you Jolly Sailor"
N. T.
Lovely location on the river and always have a good selection of beers and ciders on tap. The roast is also superb!
V. K.
After coming here in the 1980s and 1990s we were really looking forward to it but the food was disappointing and the lights weren’t working in the outdoor covered area so we had to go back inside. The ling was bland but the curry dish and the jasmine rice were fine.
R. W.
Really pleased with our visit as had a recent bad experience at another H&W chain pub, but thankfully the Jolly was a million times better. Friendly attentive service, good atmosphere and really lovely food, we'd definitely return.
S. M.
The service from the staff was excellent very friendly checking to see if we needed drinks some pubs Ive been in waited ages for table service & the pub is stuiated in lovely surroundings would definitely be going back
L. B.
On my last visit to the Jolly Sailor, my party of three had received poor service. Ordering drinks at the bar seemed to last a lifetime and we waited roughly 40 minutes for our mains. One of the main courses came first - a salad and we had to wait another 20 minutes for the rest of the mains (2X roast chicken and fries). I feel this particular day the service was slow and incompetent. However, I feel with better service, the restaurant's nautical charm and beautiful marina views will be a perfect setting for a first date or a relaxed summer pint.
K. B.
Went for our Folkboat Christmas meal on Sunday 1st December. First time we have eaten here and all the food was lovely. We were looked after by Ellie who was very professional and charming.
M. B.
Very good pub with lovely views. Friendly staff, good service, food we had was simple but very well cooked and presented. And a range of Badger beer. Definitely will be back
S. M.
It is a lovely place with a lot of character and history. Serves good food with great staff.
Beer&wine selection is one of the best..... Overall, worth the visit... You will go again. 🤗
i. m.
Was looking forward to visiting this pub, but I have to say I was underwelmed. Service lacked attention. Food was expensive brewers Fyre stuff. Beer was poor
Average.
J. J.
Sorry guys all our burgers were overcooked and dry..maybe just.unlucky. all 4 of us daid the same thing. Location and service great.
B. M.
Pretty riverside pub with good food and atmosphere.
In the summer you can enjoy sitting outside by the river hamble watching the boats and paddle boaders go by. The pub also has a small pontoon for small crafts to stop off for refreshments.
In the winter the pub has real fires and is a great place to warm up with a nice meal.
J. M.
Very well organised for the covid situation. We left our boat in Hamble Marina came up in our tender and tied up on the pontoon outside the pub. What a great place to watch the world go by whilst being safely and well looked after.
L. C.
Romantic setting and cosy inside. Riverside with nice views and a sheltered jetty with seating. Great food too.
A. d.
I travelled and met friends here I'm a cook.
We were very pleased with our meals .
I have to say tangle foot pie mash and leeks and bacon outstanding! Gravy amazing!mashed potato..amazing..
One miniscule point ..backlog of oil on plate (leeks and bacon )but not major
M. L.
Nice beer garden. Beer was not bad either
C. D.
It's a lovely setting and we had a really nice beer. The staff are really friendly and found as a table even though we hadn't booked due to no shows.
k. d.
Lovely food, Ellie was really helpful and location looking over The Hamble was delightful. Excellent Covid precautions. Extended Eat our to Help out during Sept and more discounts planned in October. Definitely worth a visit!
J. N.
Decided that as I last visited the Pub 40 years ago when I was 18 it was time to go back, well this time I approached the Pub from the road side, as all other visits had been by boat, all I can say is Please Be Careful!! The best place to park is the car park of the Bursledon railway station, and walk, if at night bring torches, as the path out of the sation is unlit, and a bit of a steep jobby!! however the walk is quite pleasant as you can make out the boats etc beneath you, there is a path down to the Pub it is well lit and well kept, but is all steps, I would think wheel chair access would be impossible, BUT there may be another way down? As for the Pub, well kept very clean and the staff were very well mannered, food was very good, I would say the portions were correct, not too little and not too much, however my desert could of been larger, but that's just me, I should emagine during the summer this Pub would be a very nice place to be, last evening was very cold outside, there was a nice log fire inside welcoming guests, would we go again? Oh Yes, highly recommended, just be careful on the hilly approach!!
R. S.
Four star for location, courteous staff and nice drinks options.
One star deducted as not much food options for vegetarians and vegans. They even stopped Halumi burger which used to my favourite. But i will still go as it is one of the best pubs for local habitats.
D. B.
Good location - probably more attractive when water level higher. Helpful staff and quick service. A popular place so reserving table might be advisable we went 730 sat evening and got a table on pontoon but all inside tables full
P. A.
Very nice pub in a great location but tables were not cleared at all the whole time we were there and the place looked extreme dirty with empty glasses and leftover food everywhere. Got so bad people were having to clear tables themselves when arriving.
C. E.
Stopped during our long walk for a beer theybhad a great selection and the view of the river sets a perfect ambiance
j. w.
ok nice place for a couple of drinks
L. H.
Nice setting. Good food although a little unhelpful with regards to an allergy.
Would go again though.
p. p.
Great beer, tasty food and helpful staff.. what's not to like.. oh and the view is quite good too...
K. K.
Beautiful location, really nice friendly staff. Need to book if you want food atm but great when you can
R. J.
Really good food with a vegan starter choice of mains and pudding. Pretty pub by the water. Steep steps to get to the pub.
I. P.
Very nice pub in a great location by the water with a lovely outlook. Lots of places to sit outside. Limited selection on the menu but good daily specials and fantastic puddings. Very friendly and helpful staff and very welcoming to dogs.
J. C.
Situated by the river, great outside space. Food lovely. Fair prices. Efficient polite staff, bar quite expensive though. No car park and a bit awkward to get to but worth it!
S. A.
The Jolly Sailor is in a lovely location overlooking the River Hamble. Entry is via a set of steep steps so not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs. There are a few outdoor tables, including some on a covered jetty. The food used to be great but sadly it has really gone downhill. Our burgers were over cooked, as were the prawns in my sister's pasta. My mum's pork belly was fine. For pudding 2 of us went for sticky toffee pudding, we had the option of ice-cream, custard or cream. When the pudding with custard arrived it didn't have any sticky toffee sauce. We complained and they said they'd get us a replacement - when it came the pudding had sticky toffee sauce, but came with ice cream instead of custard!! Maybe they don't serve the sticky toffee sauce with it when you have custard, but the whole point of sticky toffee pudding is the sauce!!! Maybe it was an off day, I will be back, but just for drinks.
A. G.
This place was always renowned as a cosy and friendly place to grab a couple of pints by the waters-edge. These days it's one of the nicest places to go in the area for a meal. The food served is of a high quality and the staff are all very friendly and professional.
N. B.
Great burgers, exceptional location
Still good, especially in the sun
D. W.
A really nice pub tucked away on the banks of the Hamble River overlooking a marina. Cosy inside with plenty of seating, friendly staff and a comprehensive menu. We had an amazing Sunday afternoon there.
A. L.
First time... great views nice clean pint service always on hand .
Had steak pie and enjoyed very much.
Will be going back .
Look out for the daily board menu
As was not told at bar ! Found out after I orderd .but still pie was great !!!!!
L. R.
Friendly service and good range of food. Went for a leisurely family lunch here - we weren't rushed at all. Lovely location.
J. D.
Good food, great service, great location.
M. J.
Fantastic location. Great real ales. Didn't eat but food looked good. Recommend a visit.
m. l.
Nice place. Nice staff. Food felt like brakes food and not from scratch.
S.
Lovely location, friendly staff, no wine list so you have no idea how much it will be. The beens with the duck very al dente, skin nicely crisp meat was a bit dry, potatoes very nice. Surprisingly the game sauce with the lamb and the cumberland sauce on the duck tasted very much alike. The sticky toffee was good and the chocolate brownie was superb.
H. H.
Very nice for, lovely location although not wheelchair average at all. Great views of the port with access to the water from a kayak if you have one handy. Food is very nice, dog friendly.
L. T.
Great place to eat and drink, food was superb
C. M.
Really beautiful, friendly place to go for a drink or meal. Not suitable for elderly or disabled due to steep path to access pub.
R. D.
Great location, great food, great service.
g. s.
Absolutely fantastic vibes in the pub. Friendly staff, quick service. Great band playing
P. E.
Smooth.
t. p.
Nice old picturesque pub, reasonable prices and dog friendly, with a lovely view out over the estuary.
Not accessible by disabled people very easily as access is by lots steps or a steep ramp, but still worth a visit
h. h.
Easily the cutest pub with lovely views ! The food is fabulous!! Definitely a place to visit in Southampton. Parking can be difficult though. Plan your journey accordingly
R. M.
Very nice place to drink. I even made the grumpy barmaid smile which made me feel privaliged. I like the happy hour and the vibe. Soho £2.83 a pint!!! Get down there between 5-8
R. E.
I've been here a couple of times previously for drinks and snacks and it was excellent, so we were really looking forward to going here again.
However today was my first time ordering a meal and whilst my partners looked great mine was awful. There isn't much vegetarian choice anyway but what I got was a bit pathetic, my 'butternut squash tart with beet and celery salad with sour cream' was a soggy slice of pastry with mushy squash and slices of carrot with a limp/dry garnish with a smear of sour cream on the side. Not exactly what I was expecting, and certainly not worth £8.
We heard the people on the table next to us complaining about the main course size too, saying it was better to buy the cheeseboard because you got much more for less money!
They also got our tab mixed up with someone else's and tried to charge us for a bottle of wine we didn't have. I'm disappointed because before I really enjoyed this place, and because it's out of the way for us anyway I don't see us going back.
A. D.
Great venue. Friendly staff but very slow service. Ran out of roast beef by 2.30! Good sized portions , fairly tasty!
C. B.
Friendly staff, nice outdoor seating! Will definitely be visiting again soon
L. A. P. W.
Stunning place and wonderful food
L. J.
Lovely setting & views. Sadly didn't feel the food matched this in terms of quality & price. First time I've been back in over a year, disappointed that the food was not the same standard it used to be.

Very nice atmosphere, lovely setting and a great selection of beers. Also dog friendly, and currently running a charity "doggy menu". Would definitely recommend a visit!

Just fab. Stopped in for a pint. Had 2. Warm cosey atmosphere, friendly staff. Look forward to my next visit. Oh and a decent pint of proper beer

One of my favourite pubs of all time, lovely views over the Hamble and great good. We had steak and chips, highly recommended.
A. M.
Waterside pub and restaurant by Hamble river in attractive location overlooking marinas and boatyards full of yachts and motor cruisers.
If arriving by car or on foot be aware there is a long steep climb up followed by a long staircase descent to the pub. Car parking at Burseldon station. Limited amount of car parking space closer to pub entrance, but frequently full up.
Attractive old pub both inside and out. Very popular in good weather. Excellent food quality and quantity, but you may have to wait a bit when they are very busy.

Lovely food, a great evening 😀 friendly staff.
Parking is an issue but you will find a resolution.

First time I have visited in some years and was rather disappointed. This used to be a busy pub with a wide food choice but I was surprised how limited the choice was today. Unfortunately it was also very average and rather overpriced in my view. It's salvaging features were the location ( as always) and some good draught beer....
J. G.
Yummy food and beautiful location, clumsy service but no massive complaints
E. B.
Absolutely lovely pub in a great location with a fantastic view and vibe. The staff are lovely and friendly and will offer advice on food and drink if you are unsure about anything. Would recommend anyone and everyone to visit.

A perfect stopping point.
A friend and I paddled up to The Jolly Sailor on our Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP) after 6+ miles of paddling The pub having a pontoon where you can land and tie up was one of the reasons we headed to the Hamble.
We both had the fish and chips, I'm not sure if it was the hunger but the food was super tasty.
I just wish I had been able to sample some of the ales on tap but I didn't want to be drunk in charge of a SUP.

Great riverside location, decent food and drink...albeit not cheap. Queues can be a BIG problem, but if you're OK with the wait, then this place is fine.
Be aware...this is not a great place for disabled access and that car parking can be seriously difficult.
T. T.
With the waterside area, this is a great place to have your afternoon/evening meal at. Food is lovely and the atmosphere inside is wonderful. The only downside is the parking, which isn't hoorendous; just a bit of a nuisance, but manageable.
S. Q.
No ploughman's, no ham, no eggs at lunchtime. Otherwise OK.
M. W.
A very cosy pub, they had ran out of most roast dinners by the time we arrived (15:45) and found the portions quite small and potatoes very dry, I would return to have a drink but not eat.
I. I.
A beautiful palace anytime of the day and whatever the weather is. Warm and cosy. Great food. Amazing place to go and catch up with a friend or family or ideal for a dinner date. Try it. You wont be disappointed

Popped in for a birthday meal and the staff joined in the congratulations buying a birthday drink. Very friendly and helpful, the food very much enjoyed by us. Generous portions.
B. G.
Great service. The staff were really good. Position is one of the best around right on the river. Food was good.
J. T.
Truly the classic British seaside pub. Great setting good menu and plenty of sitting indoors and out Have long made the Jolly one of my favourite pubs, And a place I always try and visit when I’m back in Bursledon.
G. S.
One of my favourite pubs with an excellent location with good food and drinks
W. R.
Absolutely lovely place. Stunning views, good quality food, and you are not rushed during your meal, or even just a coffee. Love it.
C. O.
The food was tasty although could have been presented better for the price. I had the tarragon chicken leg while my other half had one of the burgers and raves about them all the time.

Cracking little pub , fantastic food

I've been frequenting the Jolly Sailor for over 20 years on and off (I live in the area). As somebody who sails and hence likes to be near the water it rates as the best that I know along the Hampshire coast. Also the traditional beers - Tanglefoot etc. have been an added attraction.
Always in the past the food has been a bit expensive but always good quality and plentyfull - well worth paying the extra because of the location. That's until my last visit with the family. Tiny portions of poor quality food served on a sort of mini wooden bread board or small chipped white tin tray. What's happened - is it a new owner because it can't all be down to the Chef?
Needless to say will only now go there for just a beer in future!

I have NEVER writen a review before but felt so disappointed, and not for the first time with the food in this place that I had share!!! I had seafood with chips, whcih was just really bad pub food, I wonder if it came from Iceland. My friend had a burger and chips did not even bother to melt the cheese on top, nasty nasty cheap rubbish, only problem its NOT cheap if they want to serve food of this qualty at least charge appropriately. Its a total joke that they say they have "team of quality chefs!!! purleeese....... none of this was cooked on the premises - definitely microwave technicians really reaally not good enough and such a disappointment for an otherwise really nice location just remember not to eat there.
s.
Great food and location, especially if you plan on walking along the Gamble afterwards.
T.
Enjoy the food . Staff friendly just need more carrots with my camembert. Very busy little place I'd park in the train station and walk up it's a lot easier ( steep hill)
S. C.
Location is brilliant as is the ambience in this quaint riverside pub/bistro popular with the yachting community, and was the film set for 1985-90, TV drama 'Howard's Way'. Good food and real ale.
K.
Nice refreshing cool drink after arriving by ⛵. The food looked great, but didn't try it.
A. F.
A great pub in a lovely setting. Have been here in the summer and winter, and has been great both times.
J. E.
Not as jolly as I was hoping but very good food but as we were eating some sailors did arrive on a boat you don't see very often, well maybe you do there and they looked fairly jolly.
A. I.
Amazing place! So cozy.
G. S.
A bit off the beaten track but well worth it, I had a steak and Wow would recommend this place very highly .2 steaks 4 beers and 2 dessert £70 .you can park at the train station for free and it's a short walk, can't wait to go back
A. C.
Lovely view from the seating outside the pub.
L. “.
I respect its a dog friendly pub,but dogs should not be allowed to be in the eating area while other customers are dining
M. C.
Great pub right in the marina so good views. Food and drink is excellent with a good range well cooked. Highly recommended but lots of steps to get down to it.
T. G.
Very quaint hidden pub near the water. Parking will be a nightmare busy evenings and a bit of a trek down steps to get to it. But worth it and seems v popular. Drinks are expensive!
C. P.
Wine glasses not properly cleaned. Sticky table and furniture (shirt getting stuck to the back of the bench seat). Roast OK. I ordered the fruit crumble for pudding. There was no crumble; it was stewed fruit sprinkled with raw porridge oats. Lazy? Apart from the fact that it was not what it said on the menu (it mentioned an oat topping but omitted to say that there was no crumble - how can they call that crumble?), I'd say it was bordering on rude.
J. H.
Great food, great location professional courteous helpful staff, fair prices👍👌
S. W.
Great pub! Lovely staff, nice views of the boats and river and amazing food!
J. J.
Lot's of smiles from staff and myself and my family felt very welcome. Fabulous location and very delicious food. Warm and relaxing atmosphere.
S. P.
Enjoyed a brilliant meal with the family. Service was fantastic. It was chosen for me as a surprise from my daughter and she couldn't have chosen better.
D. P.
Stopped for a quick bite to eat, had the fish finger sandwich was delicious and they are the best pub for taking your four legged friend. Five stars more if if it was an option.
S. A.
Excellent, good food and service
D. W.
A lovely place, staff were very pleasant and chatty. Lots of stairs down to reach it so not for the faint hearted but a beautiful setting right on the River Hamble.
A. C.
Beautiful pub on the river. Cracking beer and fab location. Food is good however slightly expensive. Little to no sun in the afternoons though unless you sit out on the pontoon on the river.
E. L.
Nice spot for a drink and a bit of boat watching!
A. O.
Great location with nice scenery, no parking though. Food was standard pub food.
J. M.
Beautiful old pub right on the edge of the Hamble river. Access from the railway carpark is via a steep slope and quite a few stairs. Great food.
R. I.
Best pub in town. Host today was excellent and all the staff are friendly. Have dealt really well with all the challenges. Thank you
J. P.
Couldn't fault the food or the service. We went on a Friday night and it's a great place to eat and drink in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Will go back again.
S. 8.
Friendly staff and good drinks on tap. A great spot by the water when the weather’s inviting
M.
Good setting, friendly bar staff, pretty good food. Only downside is it can get very busy - especially on weekends!
J. C.
Fabulous food. Eight of us went for my son's birthday and every meal was perfect. Great staff and great service.
A. D. L.
The bar's location is great. It has lovely view. Me and my friends enjoy our time here, but everything would be much better if the service isn't so slow and incompetent.
J. a. M. W.
We had a lovely carvery after kayaking up to the pontoon. Friendly staff and good food. A great place on the water
M. R.
The Jolly Sailor is a nice pub situated next to the marina. Food is high quality and there is an extensive drink selection. Only minus is that it is a bit expensive.
N. T.
Well I always thought this was an upper market pub , food was average pub grub if it was available , so many meals were not available for is at seven o'clock sitting ,shame as settings were luvley , I really you really need to rethink your ordering of stock we had a good laugh good job there was plenty of wine and Gin wasn't a lot more on offer , step up to the mark jolly sailor you have a great place make the most of it !!!!!;
G. D.
Nice looking pub, good food.
Better when the tide is in rather than out as it’s right on the water. Parking at the train station nearby is best.
J. W.
Four or us went for Sunday lunch and had their gorgeous fish and chips. As ever the food was very good, the service professional and unobtrusive; and every time I go back it is the same.
R. W.
Lovely pub with a great atmosphere, location and menu. Service wasn't great on our last visit but think it was just a blip!
T. H.
Superb outlook, great good and friendly staff. Had the camembert sharer to start, gammon for main and it was very good. A lovely pub with character and charm.
C. B.
Great place to sit and drink, but pretty dreadful food. Curled up veg and stale bread for our plougmans. However, for a drink, lovely!
I. W.
Well worth the visit. Beautiful setting on the bank of the Hamble River. Good quality food as expected from Hall and Woodhouse. Service was great. Good value too.

Awesome pub in a great location, on the water with seating both inside the cosy indoor area and on the wharf. Good food too, reasonably priced

K. S.
Excellent ambience and service.
I. D.
Both times arrived by sea. Great pub and staff and great food. Can't wait to go back
A. E.
We turned up cold and wet at 3.30 on a Tuesday afternoon with 2 wet dogs in toe and received a warm welcome and good pint and a lively meal and got to sit on front of a log fire looking out over the hamble, spot on
T. H.
Nice meal but roast beef was disappointingly fatty given the price of the cut and small portion
S. P.

Q. M.
Very good food good service thank you
V. H.
The Jollys has an awesome location and a nice atmosphere. Only downsides food can be hit or miss and the prices I think are a bitvl steep for a pub.
S. H.
Really enchanting fisherman's pub
R. H.
Excellent venue. Staff were very attentive, informative and cheerful. The location is wonderful, with views of the mariner and the hamble.
M. G.
Cracking Sunday lunch next to the log fire overlooking the river. Really enjoyed the whole experience
A. S.
Great meal, steep steps down from road parking. Good beer. Will eat here again. Shame the pontoon dries out.
C. W.
Nice traditional pub. Food was very good but would have preferred it to be severed on plates rather than enamel bowls and wooden boards.
J. D.
Great food, wonderful setting and lovely atmosphere. Good service.
S. T.
Get there early to bag an outside table. Love the mussels.
Great view of the boats.
P. N.

Worth finding for the beer and location. I would not advise wheelchair access. Decent climb up to the road when leaving and a walk to the car.
J. B.
Not ce ambiance and friendly bar staff

Chilled Riverside pub with good service and a great offering of ales. Tricky to find compared to most pubs but this excludes the crowds and makes this a prize worth reaching.
C. H.
Great welcome, prompt and friendly service, beautiful setting overlooking marina and boat yard, lovely!
I. M.
Very expensive. 3 scallops £12, pint of beer £5.45, skin-on fries (small) £4.

Steep steps to the pub, but worth it
s.
Glad the pontoon is back in action, I've missed this place.
C. S.
Nice pub on the waterfront. Came by dinghy across from the marina but found that their pontoon is not accessible at low tide. Otherwise, very good.

Good food and great beer!
