Reviews of The Barleycorn Inn

Sunday lunch with family. Warm welcome at the Barleycorn, friendly staff… and dog 🐶 friendly. Proper straightforward tasty Sunday roasts for most of us….. very tasty and very generous helpings… piping hot and plenty of gravy. Choice of sweets and coffees to finish off. Very good value for money, strongly recommend, booking essential. We’ll be back…. for the crumble and custard 👍👏👌😊.
D. M.
Beer garden is nice to sit in on a sunny weekend. Food is tasty and portion sizes are good. Prices are on the higher side but no different to similar pubs.

We’ve just had a wonderful Christmas family meal for 13 of us. The food was absolutely fantastic, much better than other more expensive Christmas meals I’ve had this month in local restaurants. Well done to all of the lovely, helpful staff . Definitely coming back 👍🏻🥳🤶🏻

What an amazing Sunday roast. We had a child's portion and we couldn't eat it all. Good value for money and cooked fresh absolutely lovely and all staff are so polite and welcoming.
K. M.
Lovely little pub and amazing fresh cooked food. Really impressed 😊

Me and my partner came down on a Friday evening after make a table reservation, the food was fantastic! Lots of flavour and the portions were so big! - the manager was extremely welcoming and made us feel at home. We also met the landlord who along with the staff were so lovely! Such a welcoming atmosphere! Would highly recommend to anyone!

Another great meal at the Barleycorn. 4 kids and 4 adults. Such friendly staff couldn’t do enough for us. Good was absolutely delicious. Best roast dinner around. Live music which was a bonus. Had a fab afternoon will definitely be back soon!!

This venue has undergone a complete change of management and staff, but retains it's village, local, reputation.
The food here, prepared and cooked by Simon (Sybil), is absolutely astonishing. The portions are huge and the taste, superb.
My only gripe is the constant problem they have with their 1664 pump?
Great atmosphere, great garden with play area and good parking.
Highly recommended.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and memorably delicious Sunday roast! Flavoursome meet, perfectly cooked veg and a fantastic gravy (that happens to be gluten free). Dog friendly.
We try to pop in every time when we are in the area!

Very friendly very clean and great garden is good. Important there is access for wheelchair users in the garden.
S. M.
ended up having an amazing meal. totally recommend their fried chicken burgers; quality bread, meat and a generous amount of toppings! we're definitely going again!
N. G.
Nice evening out with my mates after many years wait. Friendly staff and good beer.
K. H.
Food was really tasty good sized portions and priced well.
Lamb hotpot amazing and chicken and ham pie homemade.
The staff were attentive and friendly. The pub had alot of locals with a lovely atmosphere.
Absolutely would visit again.
K.
Very nice pub and good pub food. Enjoyed it.
D. S.
Visited today for the first time. The staff are friendly and we sat opposite the lovely cosy log fire. The pub is very nice inside. We will visit again. My husband enjoyed his drink but I’m afraid my latte was just Luke warm over milky with no coffee taste. I therefore left it. I was desperate for a very hot drink after our walk.
P.
This pub is great. Caters for all walks of life. Lots of staff at the bar. Food is always top notch.
D. B.
A great dog and people friendly pub.
A. S.
Lovely outdoor space. Lots of garden. Quaint pub.. Don't take notice of scaffolding.
B. Y.
Alcoholic drinks are to expensive now can get it a lot cheaper with in a mile of this pub. Sorry i shall not be using this pub as much as i would like dew to the vast increase in price
K. S.
Lovely pub, lovely staff and the waitress was fab thank you.
J. J.
Brilliant Sunday roast again, top class. What with very friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel comfortable, I cannot fault this pub. Definitely recommend!
A. C.
Excellent food, generous portions. Wonderful friendly atmosphere!
D. R.
The pub is okay and team are friendly and helpful. The one way system seems to be working most if the time. The atmosphere inside the pub has changed since new measures were put in place (no standing at bar and hanging round inside unless seated). But seems the addition of a very large marquee at the back of the pub means you can meet with friends and get a bit of the 'old days' atmosphere back.
The menu is okay and food of fair standard.
I believe the play area in the garden is currently still out of use.
Dog friendly pub (well behaved dogs ok only!!)
N. H.
Amazing pub. Hospitality AMAZING. We turned up for lunch as a group of 8 plus an infant. 4 other tired hungry kids. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Even allowed the kids to watch TV while waiting for their food.
Food was fresh, hot and really tasty.
Thank you.
L. H.
Popped in today with a friend and the puppy. Dogs allowed inside and out so long as they are on a lead. Great selection of food and happy to help with a slight change in my selection. Friendly and helpful staff. Very clean and a great outdoor space for kids to play. Sandwiches we ordered were huge but very light and super tasty, with salad and crisps. Best thing of all was that they do instant coffee. Not many places do now, but it was the best coffee I’ve had in a while. None of this all froth and no coffee you find in some pubs/cafes. Even though I’m not local, it might become a regular place to visit!
R. H.
Great pub. The staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely log fire. Good atmosphere of a local pub. The only downsides were that we had to wait a long time for the food to arrive and that the Gents toilet was very cold, despite having a brand new radiator. The food was so good, as was the atmosphere that I still love the place. Good choice of real ales, too.
D. W.
Traditional pub in great location and a friendly welcome.
M. R.
Christmas booking for 8 cooks! Service was very good and the food delicious. Very large portions. Would recommend the roast turkey.
C. M.
Getting better....will keep coming
Staff are obviously conscious of building reputation back up.... but not sure you need to be asked if everything is OK 3-4 times during meal....
Just an observation from a fellow professional hospitality manager
D. S.
Lovely meal and great staff
C. C.
My husband David and I took my daughter and her husband out for a birthday lunch. We booked ahead it's a lovely old pub, with plenty of tables to book for meals, the food is wide and varied, cooked well and delivered well in a timely fashion. The bar staff are friendly and helpful and explain what are the dishes of the day, plus a regular menu to choose from.
D. M.
We decided to visit Bishops Waltham for the day and came across this wonderful little pub. The young vibrant lady that greeted us was amazing and made our visit one to remember. The roast was the best I have ever tasted and our experience was nothing short of superb. I recommend this pub to anyone wanting a lovely experience, we didn't even make a booking and were welcomed regardless.
A. B.
A lovely homely feeling village pub with great home cooked food and very friendly staff who go the extra mile.We keep coming back so I think that says it all.Highly recommend
A. H.
Quirky and warm pub with friendly staff. Unfortunately they didn't have any real ales on offer which is surprising as it's a Greene King pub
W. H.
Best steak ever ! Food is fantastic! You lot moaning about renovations , money doesn't grow on trees ! Staff were great, food was astounding ! Fast service .we will definitely be going back again.
C. E.
So friendly and welcoming and food was tasty, great quality. Triple chocolate brownie dessert was so warm and delicious!
M. B.
What a great pub. Having been in another pub 10 mins before and asked ' Do you do a ploughmans lunch ' and being told no, I didn't hold out much hope, but what do you know they said yes. It was very delicious, apart from an abundance of celery, which took up space on the cheeseboard, and even the most stoic, could not have managed it. The other patrons in this establishment were very friendly and allowed me to take photographs, which are now in New Zealand and will be used as my Christmas calendar. A lovely experience.
R. W.
We always drop into this Inn for a meal before an evening meeting. The staff are very friendly and the pies are fantastic so always have a top meal.
J. C.
Oh Wow ..Big shout out to the amazing 2 chefs that cooked our meal today ! Thank you ! Best tasting food we have eaten in a while ! Great staff !
b.
Probably the best roast dinner I've had in ages....so much there, I couldn't finish it...atmosphere was chilled and friendly...Great value for money....Will definitely be coming back
A. H.
Amazing food and drinks a little expensive and not much for diet's but over all a great place to sit and eat or just have a drink with freinds.
D. T.
Good clean pub, great atmosphere, very tasty food good portions will definitely be going back.
I. M.
The staff were very friendly and there was a good selection of drinks and food available. We visited at lunchtime and had the chicken and bacon salad which was delicious and filling. Seems to be a popular place with unusual decor. Would certainly go in again if in the area.
R. A.
Good old fashioned drinking pub with lots of real ale choice and a large beer garden with kids play area. Fairly basic food menu available. Highly recommended for a chill out session
S. M.
Very nice pub!
This is a proper pub with proper pub food. Evidently popular too. It got very busy but didn't detract from the atmosphere... it actually enhanced it.
I had a fish and chips as I thought this is a good classic pub meal and it didn't dissapoint.
J. K.
Been decorating so decided to go for meal Sunday, popped into barley corn ,had not booked like we usually do ,very busy but sqeezed us in ,the food as per usual was excellent and so much of it. Staff 10/10 again thank you
R. H.
Staff friendly and efficient. Food was good, but plates were cold which is wrong and very heavy. I pity the waitress who was clearing away. And when we asked for a gin and tonic I think we should have been told about the big range of gins available.
C. C.
My Wife and I had a lovely Sunday roast was amazing . The staff were great so friendly will definitely return

Recommended this by others and it did not disappoint. Magnificent chicken and leek pie with proper chips and delectable gravy. Best sign of all - doing a roaring lunch trade with the "locals". Not cheap, but you get what you pay for!

Visited Sunday 19th August with my wife,i started with the Prawn Cocktail,i have never had a prawn cocktail with so many prawns. My wife ordered a small white bait starter and the portions when delivered was exactly what she required. The Sunday Roast was excellent, plenty of meat food piping hot and excellent choice of fresh veg, small portion ordered by my wife and again ideal portion size.Ordered the blackberry and apple crumble which again was excellent. What we both enjoyed is the pace in which the courses came out,it enabled us to enjoy each course fully.Staff very attentive, would recommend the Barleycorn to anyone.

(Translated) The Barleycorn Inn is set in a 17th-century building with oak beams. At one point it was a brewery and in front of a pauper house; The poor lived upstairs and the saloon bar was a pigsty!
Set in the famous Hampshire countryside, it lies in the attractive and historic town of Waltham Bishopa.
The palace was founded in 1136 by Bishop Henri de Blois, brother of King Stephen. For centuries, Bishop's Waltham Palace was an important residence for the powerful bishops of Winchester and has hosted many royal visitors. Here, Henry V, prepared for the Battle of Agincourt and Queen Mary 1, was waiting for King Philip to come from Spain for their wedding.
Cromwell destroyed the palace in 1644, but the ruins can still be visited.
French Admiral Villeneuve was captured during the Battle of Trafalgar. He was imprisoned and deposited with Bishop's Waltham before his final release in 1806.
And here is the premises offer:
-Real Ales
-Food served daily
-Sunday Lunch with up to four meats from £ 8.95
-Children are welcome
-Great garden
-Children's Playground
-Family atmosphere
-Dogs greet at the public bar and garden

Barleycorn Inn mieści się w XVII-wiecznym budynku z dębowymi belkami. W pewnym momencie był to browar, a przed domem dla pauperów; Biedni mieszkali na górze, a bar saloon był chlewem!
Położony w słynnej wiejskiej scenerii w Hampshire, leży w atrakcyjnym i zabytkowym mieście Waltham Bishopa.
A oto oferta lokalu:
