Reviews of The Butcher's Hook Alehouse
C. A.
Best beer selection in Southampton. Great atmosphere. Wonderful staff. An absolute must visit for the discerning beer drinker when in Southampton. 🍻
J. P.
Get the one negative out of the way, like most independent ale houses it's probably too small but apart from that it's fairly great.
Good selection of drinks, decent prices and friendly staff.
Going to make more of a effort to pop in more often.
A. N.
I do like this place, although tiny (I guess that's the point being a micropub, but would benefit massively from being bigger). Beers good, dog-friendly. Would be great if they teamed up with a local joint on the triangle to do food.
G.
What a great find. I just wish I had earlier. A fantastic atmosphere, great selection of Ale and very much worth the effort to find and come down to try. Staff we so friendly and approachable. Well done, you have my vote
J. J.
Love the Hook. Always a great selection of beers, always great service, always an awesome vibe. Lovely people, good beer. What more could you want?
R. D.
Great tap room with unusual lay out. Easy place to meet new people and chat. Offers a wide range of beers.
K. B.
Close to the Bitterne triangle, opposite the clock, this is a great place for craft beer.
A great vibe either with friends or even at slightly off peak times.
It’s not a big place but, that’s what makes it so appealing.
Get there at the right time before places are taken though. Pet friendly too.
Decorated with a lots of arty stuff it’s a must do.
L. S.
Great place to go for a pint after a walk in Riverside Park, friendly staff and relaxed vibe.
E. H.
A small but perfectly formed selection of unusual real ales and ciders. Really good atmosphere with no tellys or loud music.
D. M.
One of my favourite places, great selection of beer.
A. M.
This is a really fantastic alehouse serving plenty of beer on tap and in bottles.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff willing to suggest different beers to try.
Seating is limited but if you can grab a spot it's definitely worth it
L. F. C.
Always a great selection of beers on here. Friendly place. Does get very crowded at times but they have additional seating outside.
T. S.
Great beers as always, friendly and quick service as always. Nothing else needed to say!
V. M.
Excellent real ales and craft beers at this characterful micropub
E. M.
This place is an absolute hidden gem.
Well worth a trip out from Southampton centre.
B. K.
Friendly place with ales straight from the cask. The first micropub in Southampton.
A. E.
Superb ale selection, great atmosphere. A real gem!! Get there early or you will be standing.
H. A.
One of the best places to have a beer in an SO postcode
H. C.
A bit out of the way but definitely one of the better independent bars in the Southampton area. An interesting selection of craft beers and ales. Very friendlty staff. Good atmosphere. However, it can get busy/crowded very quickly as it is quite small. Will return.
S. D.
Friendly, happy, chilled pub.
Always a varied selection of beers, local and further afield.
Friendly staff and a good atmosphere.
M. S.
This is one of those places that you're happy to have nearby. It is tiny, not many seats inside and a couple of benches outside, but it has amazing choice of craft beers. I am sure everyone will find something for themselves (well, unless you are a lager person :) ). Staff is helpful and friendly. I do recommend going there if you feel like trying something new. But be warned - it is packed in peak times.
P. M.
Really fantastic beer, even had Welsh Red Ale Cwtch on tap.
S. M.
Best pub in Southampton. Always have friendly staff, great selection of local beers and a cosy & vibrant atmosphere. If it looks full - don't be deterred, people are always willing to budge up and let you squeeze onto their table!

If you are a traveler you will find all of England contained in this one micro pub. All of the cask ales are excellently kept and better value than ANY other pub in Southampton. The young landlord Anthony is a sharp entrepreneur who has converted this once butcher’s shop into a warm spot for regulars and visitors of all ages.
I say that you will find all of worth in ENGLAND here because of the spectrum of customers across all ages and classes. The gender balance is also refreshing to see with groups of smart, sharp young women meeting and drinking together sans partners.
What’s Anthony’s secret? How did he succeed in making The Butcher’s such a successful and welcoming environment? The answer is profoundly simple: no sports screens, no music, no quizzes. Instead the longish tables, because of the shape of the pub, are set in a row so that customers have no choice but to face opposite either their friend or a stranger.
So you will meet college professors, students, scientists fraternizing with labourers, shopkeepers , software engineers and artists, all together like a congregation devoted to the superb real ale.
People on their own such as myself, come to drink here because the environment literally forces human interaction and conversation. I met good and lasting friends in this pub every night I went.
The Butcher’s Hook is a conduit for conviviality and warm human relations. It gives myth to the notion that the English are cold, remote or indifferent. On the contrary, if you are a visiting foreigner such as myself, it is a visit to the heart and soul of this Emerald Island.
Absolutely worth going out of your way to find. And please mention my name to the attentive staff and/or Anthony so that I can get a pint on the house next time I visit!

Really unique and different take on a pub / bar. Warm and cosy feel to the place. Friendly vibe and the staff are brilliant.
Reasonably priced drinks and you can pay on card. If your thirsty definitely stop off for a drink.
D. Z.
If you like beer, this is one of the best places in Southampton, with a huge selection of beers both local and foreign. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxed. If you want something to eat, you can purchase some snacks or you can bring your own food (there are fish and chips shops and take-aways nearby).
S. W.
One of my favourite little pubs. It's always busy. Great beers!
C. S.
amazing micro pub, very cosy and you always meet someone new.
Update some years down the line. This place still has the same attraction to me it held from when I first went. Beer is amazing and I'm so pleased the made it through lockdown.
D. M.
Excellent craft ale bar. Great selection of beers, ales and cider together with friendly staff.
D. M.
Probably the best micro pub in the country. Really friendly knowledgeable staff. Prices are good, they do cask and keg, bottles and also wine and soft drinks. Regularly run or host events for the local community. They have cutlery and sauces etc for you to bring your own food in. Most importantly the beer is perfectly kept and they get some of the very best beer available on a regular basis. Outside seating, Wi-Fi, board games and some books all available too.
S. F.
A unique pub that's not too "pubby". Best apple juice anywhere. Comfy enough. And, best of all, dog friendly - but get there early if you want a seat.
A. J.
Quirky and original little place with a fantastic and ever-changing drink selection. Chilled vibe perfect for locals and guests.
I. N.
So happy this place opened within walking distance of my house. Amazing beer and always something different to try. Nice friendly atmosphere, gets busy so shame there isn't space for a bit more seating.
B. W.
The only thing that would make this a 5 star is if it was double the size it pains me to give it 4. The beers are fantastic (Belgian ale drinker) the use of up cycled furniture is rustic and fitting. An old butchers shop now a pub/bar. No brewing on house though it claims it's a micro brewery but overall outstanding. And very popular love it.
L. F. M.
Best beer in the area, if not the whole city, very reasonably price with friendly customers and staff. Great atmosphere, not pretentious like other ale shops. You can bring food in and also dog friendly.
A. C.
When you consider that far more people drink here than in the sadly neglected BP Hotel opposite- which would have 5 or 6 times the floorspace - you do ask why. Excellent and varied beers, fairly priced and a good atmosphere.
R. L.
Great beers, so many beers, on rotation. New and interesting beers, often with a focus on quirky but not gimmicky tastes. Small, intimate room without a bar. Can get takeaways if it looks packed :)
N. B.
Fantastic small pub. An ever changing selection of drinks, and more recently with gin added. Lots of interesting things happening, like some live music. It's small size give it the great atmosphere and the only negative is when it is too busy.
C. W.
Excellent beer; we'll kept, lots of choice and reasonable prices. Great atmosphere too. Would definitely recommend. Expect standing room only at weekends.
N. W.
Southampton's first micropub and still one of the best, brilliant range of cask ales and craft kegs. Definitely worth a visit although it is a little out of the way being in Bitterne Triangle but well worth the effort. Be aware, it is closed Monday's and Tuesday's.
A. M.
Awesome place, community. Beer keeps changing all the time so you'll never get bored. If you're in Southampton-you definitely need to visit this place.
B. L. (.
High quality ale and average consumption. Very satisfied drink feeling.
W. D.
Quirky ale house, friendly customers and staff. Could seek out an alcohol free ale for nominated drivers such as Adnams Ghost Ship perhaps? Well worth a visit and you will be 'hooked'.
l. s.
Delicious been, friendly staff, small but comfortable ale house that allows you to bring in food from outside as they don't serve any. Also open to having Anxiety Anonymous meetings here once a month on a Tuesday when the place is closed.
T. D.
The original Southampton ale House: always up to date with a constantly rotating selection of local and the best craft and beers. Small and often standing room only but you won't be disappointed!
D. M.
The original Southampton micro pub, if you're lucky enough to live nearby and haven't yet been, do. If you're visiting Southampton get off the train at St Denys and take a short walk to the friendliest of places with excellent beer.
C. J.
One of the few places sourcing beers from great breweries that are a little more obscure or further afield, with a cosy environment in which to enjoy! Recommended.
R. G.
Nice place. Good selection of ales. Friendly staff.
B. S.
Brilliant trendy little independent pub in an old butchers shop. A little bit of Brighton or London in the suburbs of Southampton. If you're bored of the run of mill, commercial high street, bars and clubs, head here for a refreshing, hip and friendly atmosphere with bags of character.
J. T.
Great for the ale lovers, good atmosphere and selection of craft beers ....took me back to student days, but I am a prossecco girl, went for the boys. That fizz needs to be available.
T. G.
Music first Sunday of every month. No amps but in a small place quite loud. Folk music last time. But there is room outside if it’s not your pint.
I. S.
Great place with good selection of beers, always changing each time i visit, expect to stand as very popular and busy, good atmosphere.
S. W.
It has an excellent variety of beer and cider, a wonderful atmosphere, and without a doubt it's one of Southampton's best micropubs.
D. P.
The best craft beer 'pub' in Southampton. Constantly rotating keg and cask ales and a huge bottle selection. I just wish their capacity was bigger!
P. M.
It's alright good real ales and normally a craft cider and you can take your own food in it can get very busy and crowded Fri and Sat evenings especially
M. W.
The Original Southampton pop up bar, by Cobden Bridge in Bitterne Park, just had its birthday.
Very knowledgeable owners/ staff.
A bar that has no bar,
In an old butchers shop.
P. H.
Nice atmosphere. Varied selection of drinks. I was particularly pleased that they do cider as well.
T. R.
Great choice of beers, small intimate pub with a very relaxed atmosphere. Good selection of board/card games too.
P. S.
One of the smaller pubs I have been to, but it has one of the best beer selection I have seen in a pub. They have card and board games and you can bring food in to eat.
A. C.
Always busy for a reason. Friendly establishment offering great local ales. A welcomed addition to Bitterne's famous scalene.
S. Q.
Cosey micro pub, choc full of character (and characters!). Friendly community vibe. Lovingly curated and ever rotating choice of cask, keg and bottle/cans. Takeaway available too.
L. B.
The smallest pub with the biggest welcome. A range of fab craft ales on a long menu. Sample your way through and walk home carefully!
H. W.
Lovely place, great beers and staff. Like all these places though, just so uncomfortable to sit. Especially for us fat bottomed girls...
A. T.
Always a delightful choice of real ales and craft beers. Great atmosphere and interesting customers to chat to!
S. P.
Great selection, friendly staff. A gorgeous boozy bolthole.
L. T.
Lovely range of craft beers. Also dell other drinks including Passion fruit gin...highly recommended
N. 5. v. R. b. e.
A strange flashback to the 90s, exclusively white, exclusively sjw, packed to the rafters too...like a little island of forgotten england middle class types clinging onto socialist mindests...a proper time warp in fact.
Every other drinker is a social worker . its cuck beta central...drinkers from the time Islam forgot....funniest night ever...adult males playing pokemon deferring to brutish wahmen who are trying to morally convict anybody they can...utterly hilarious if your from the modern multicultural world. A proper time warp.
C. B.
Perfect, essentially. Delightful beer. Friendly staff. Table outside on the street even in late November.
V. R.
Gorgeous place to have fantastic beer, but seating is restricted so be prepared to be cosy!
J. D.
Great range of ever changing beers and great atmosphere. My favourite place to go in Southampton.
T. T.
An excellent little gem on the Triangle. Always a varied selection and super friendly staff too. Favorite bar in Southampton.
D. W.
The original Southampton micropub and they always have plenty of different styles of ale and craft beer to choose from..

I love this place and it is only 10 mins from my home.
G. H.
This is a micropub so don't expect a seat if you turn up on a Friday or Saturday!
Cask beer, keg beer and bottled beer.
Some acoustic music on alternate Saturdays.
H. W.

Good beer, fun style. Reminds me of the little alternative bars in the Bronx, NY. Complete with hipster barman.
