Reviews of The Compass Inn
R. C.
I've been wanting to go here for ages, since I read about the Gluten Free menu. What a lovely pub, staff were very friendly and food was amazing. Dogs very welcome and get their own lunch. Wish this pub was a bit nearer home but will definitely be going back to try something else on the menu. Even had Gluten Free beer on draft.
N. J.
Fantastic little country pub we found on the way home. Served Sunday roast without booking or electricity!! Power cut down the road didn't stop them!
Great food and beer, friendly staff and clientele

We were excited to find out about this pub, as we have dogs and my daughter eats gluten-free. We got there and took directions for a nice shady dog walk before lunch, as it was a hot day.
We stay outside, which is so pretty and very shady. To our surprise the dogs got a free ah day lunch! It was chicken, rice, veg and gravy, which they loved. We enjoyed the food a lot, and the bar drinks, also gluten free. Making gluten free pizza is an art I’ve not mastered but my daughter had a lovely one. A light crisp crust and plenty of toppings.
It was beautifully quiet. A large number of pubs cater for young families, which is great, but I dare admit that it was nice to have a lunch out without small children charging about.
Highly recommended. We may try the group dog walk with lunch sometime!

A traditional country pub, way off the beaten track, in a quiet village.
It has the beams, the horse brasses, the wood fire, all of the ambiance that you'd expect. It's dog friendly, and they organise walks for dog owners and their 4 legged friends.
But the main reason to visit will be the food. Simply excellent, with an interesting menu, great food, superbly presented by friendly staff. They have a number of specials, and various offers on different days, so the price can also be right!
Certainly, they offer some of the best cuisine I've had in a while, and it would not be out of place in a top notch restaurant.
Just a note; they also offer food suitable for those with gluten intolerance. My brother suffers with this, and I know from his comments how hard it can be to find somewhere that can cater for him.
Make the effort to find this pub, and book yourself a table. You will not regret it.
M. Z.
Great little country pub. Very good food with lots of veggie options too. Nice to sit out in the courtyard on the warm days. Staff are lovely and so hospitable. We had a veggie pie and they made vegetarian gravy specially for us. Such a fabulous experience for the Queen Jubilee long weekend. Will be back.

The Compass is being run by new proprietors. They've added their touch to it and it still has that cosy, dog friendly lovely old pub feel. I met the landlady and she's very very nice and the staff were very friendly.
Usual pub grub was spot on and reasonably priced.
There's quite a large, paved outside area, part of which is covered. Bordered by plants and shrubs and well tended. Really recommend a visit
M. S.
Just had a great meal at The Compass Inn Winsor. 100% gluten free and many other dishes dairy free and vegan. The portion sizes are huge (main meals starting at £14) but we had the much more manageable tasty and very reasonably priced main meals for £8.50. Staff all very friendly. Very dog friendly as well.
R. D.
Amazing food, lovely local pub with lots of various things you can buy. Staff are lovely too
J. N.
Absolutely lovely food, large portions. Great for coeliacs or any people with gluten intolerance and it was nice to be able to order anything, great variety and choice. Would seriously recommend to anyone, amazing atmosphere and staff!
N. B.
We had lovely vegan meals today with good menu choices. The menu was well presented for all tastes with lots of good options and simple pricing. The meals were good size portions. It was quite and cosy and we felt very welcome and relaxed. Thank you.
J.
Beautiful little pub in the heart of Hampshire. Very friendly staff and good beer although the food was a bit of a disappointment. I ordered a vegetable pasty and got chicken, its a good job I'm not vegetarian.
C. D.
Our first evening meal under its new management and how good it was !! Such a friendly pub and such a good steak - and chicken parmigiana. Just 500 yards from home and will certainly now be our local, not a huge menu but what they do they do well, in a very happy and welcoming atmosphere.
J. B.
Lovely little pub, staff were so friendly and helpful! Food was lovely. Will definitely go back when in the area again.
D. J.
What lovely traditional pub grub. Great choice for coeliacs. In particular the deep fried brie was delicious.
Very dog friendly but don't bring kids. Get a babysitter 😁
J. H.
Friendly staff, good prices, all food gluten free. 100% would go again!
A. H.
We're always so excited to come here, our favourite place to go while we're out exploring. Came for a meal this evening and did not disappoint! Lovely starter, roast dinner was amazing! Such a shame it will be closing, will definitely be trying to come back as much as we can before then!
H. B.
What a lovely pub! Very welcoming and friendly staff and with a menu that is 100% gluten free as well as dairy free and vegan options there is ample choice for those who struggle to eat out! Delicious food and ample portions, we'll definitely be returning
E. V.
Booked this pub weeks ago as we were coming to the new forest for the weekend. What an amazing place and menu, couldn't believe the entire menu is gluten free, it is like being a child in a sweet shop! I just wish we lived a bit nearer as would like to work my way through the whole menu!! Puddings as well.
The free dog dinner is just an amazing touch.
Will return as soon as possible. Thank you so much for a lovely evening and meal
A. S.
Amazing food, 100% gluten free, great portions and tasted lovely....a little gem of a place
C. M.
Worth a visit if you are a coeliac or are generally free from. They have a totally gluten free menu and as they cook to order, can accommodate most requirements. Food was absolutely stunning. I finished with a frangipan tart which is probably one of the best desserts I have ever eaten. Friendly, helpful staff. Very dog friendly too - they even do doggy main meals and doggy ice creams.
B. P.
On our way home from a day in the new forest with dogs and came across this lovely little pub. Dog friendly pub and a menu that is completely gluten free with vegan and vegetarian options. When our food came out so did our dogs food. Yes that’s right they feed your dogs for free a bowl of rice chicken and gravy with peas for our springer. Really lovely atmosphere and great food with really friendly bar staff will definitely be back again
M. N.
Lovely pub, lots of seating area and a fabulous outside area.
Menu gluten free in it's entirety!
Staff are fabulous and good good and plentiful.
Dogs welcome and they get a free dinner if you dine!
Nice ideas with dog walkers meals and outings.
Well thought out pub
C. W.
Brilliant pub! 100% Gluten Free plus dairy-free and vegan options. I can even have a pudding! Sadly, the landlady is retiring from 3rd January so it will, no doubt, no longer be Gluten free. I am devastated!
B. C.
Fabulous pub! Great food, friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. Beer is good too! So pleased we went for dinner. One of the best steaks I've enjoyed.
N. S.
We’ve been to the Compass several times now, and we’re never disappointed! The food is always delicious, with very generous portions and it’s refreshing as a gluten free person to have full choice of the menu. We really enjoyed the cosy atmosphere of the pub last night, especially with Boris to say hello to and no noisy children!
K. b.
Amazingly friendly country pub. Fantastic friendly welcome and great choice of food and drink. Cream tea in the tea room is great value and very good quality.
R. L.
Had a lovely dinner this evening. Food was amazing and the staff were very friendly. Our dog loved her doggy dinner too!
A. G.
It's a very nice and cozy place. The food itself is absolutely delicious. We loved it. Thank you for such a good treat.
M. D.
A great place to eat with happy and helpful staff.
Almost everything is homemade and fresh and as an added bonus, 100% gluten free for those that are unable to eat this ingredient. The staff are always friendly and helpful and there is always a welcoming atmosphere. Thanks to everyone!
C. B.
Loved this quaint little pub. The fact its 100% gluten free is amazing. No worrying about what we can or can't eat. Portion sizes were very generous, food was amazing. Staff very friendly and welcoming.
B. W.
Very clean and friendly pub now under new management. Respectable prices. Will definitely be using it more often.
m. w.
Would just like to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all the staff at the compass! It was my mother's 80th birthday today so we decided after checking out many local pubs to take her here! Amazing friendly welcome for us and my mums pooch! Food was fantastic price excellent couldn't recommend highly enough! Thanks so much for such a fantastic evening! see you all again soon!
K. G.
Great food once again, delightful place for relaxing lunch with the dog. Fabulous tasty lamb, beef and steak and kidney pie. Too much so no dessert today!!! All served by lovely polite ladies.
N. B.
Lovely food, friendly service and a lovely pub. 100% gluten free, but you wouldn't know it! Nice for my GF wife to be able to enjoy the full menu. Good options for dairy free too.
B. I.
Turned up quite late in the evening with a group, the very friendly bar staff were happy to still serve us food, which was lovely. They also had my favourite beer on draft, which is always a bonus. Would definitely visit again.
T. Z. H. H.
Very pretty. We must have picked a particularly quiet evening. As we were asked to book our table for earlier, and were told we couldn't wait for a taxi inside, as the lady wanted the pub closed by 10.
The food was quite mediocre. Some of it quite greasy. But a very diverse menu. Could do with upping the standard a little. But definitely not the worst. I would visit again, as would like to see what the place is like buzzing with people.
S. T.
A really quaint country pub. Dog friendly and under 12 s only welcome on a Sunday. We had an a good lunch with excellent service. The pub is completely gluten free although the food tastes completely normal 😊
A. W.
The food was really good and the staff are very kind and friendly. Would recommend.
A. W.
Local, friendly and under new management ♡
Had a great night with the new landlady.
Children welcome.
Will definitely visit again soon.
C. D. P.
I've never been to this pub,I live in London and even if it means I have to travel by myself to this wonderful place ,I bloody well will. Gluten and kids free .I could not ask for a better place. I wish more places where Adult Only pubs. Nothing worse than screeching, rude children with no manner and social grace to ruin an afternoon. Parents have to understand and respect that fact that not everyone is interested in children and not everyone has a responsibility to tolerate your child!! Good on you I say !! More places to be adult only!!!
M. B.
Very friendly, tasty food with generous portions. All gluten free, and other allergies catered for. Dogs welcome and got their own lunch of chicken rice and peas. Will be back again
M. E.
I got the feeling that the team were new to the pub business. Very friendly though. We arrived just before 1 o'clock and asked for a table. We were told that one could be available, but there was another booking at 2.30. No problem for us, but we noticed the pub was not busy. No one seemed to have a handle on taking orders. It was rather like waiting g for a bus. Nothing for a while then two came along within minutes.
S. B.
Very welcoming of us and our two dogs. Fresh water and treats offered, also allowed to roam as quiet. Excellent service, previously eaten here and nice food.
J. F.
My wife has wanted to go here for a long time. Having a 100% Gluten free kitchen we were not disappointed. Food was fantastic. Quick service and very friendly staff.
C. C.
Went for lunch and served by some amazing staff. Dave, the dog, loved his free chicken, rice and gravy lunch. He left the peas, not a fan. Food was nice though not so keen on GF ciabatta but can live with it. All dogs and adults well behaved, absolute heaven.
Thank you for such a relaxed environment, my dog is not keen on children but parents don't always understand this. No children equals a very chilled dog.
M. M.
Worth the 40 minute drive from home just to be in a no none sense pub where my wife can relax and order anything on the menu as she is Gluten free eater and dairy intolerant. For my part the first time I went I thought it would be hard to enjoy the food as gluten free can be pretty boring tasteless cuisine.
How very wrong I was , one of the best Sunday lunches I have ever had and generous portions and not just a microwaved mash up like some offerings at much more expensive pubs.
Since then we have been 5 or 6 times and the meals always very good quality and value, service can be a bit slower at busy times but that's a reflection of the fact you are getting home made food not a meal purchased out of a catering catalogue and delivered in a van.
Taken our dogs often too, friendly dog pub so another thumbs up. Recent change to children none admittance is sad but judging by our meals out In other pubs recently its quite understandable as a lot of parents could not care less if their kids spoil some one else's meal out by behaving poorly.
Overall our favourite pub meal out , we have a booking I a few weeks with friends and it will not be our last visit. If you want a country pub with gluten and dairy free food , want to take the dogs and do not want under 12 year olds spoiling your enjoyment then go and make it a meal out, its a great great pub.
K. G.
Another great lunch here today. 3 meals and a sharing plate to start. Fabulous lamb, great beef and Yorkshire pudding, steak and kidney pie, all gluten free tasty and hot. Lovely ladies looking after everything.
M. A.
Lovely place. Stopped for lunch with dog and made to feel very welcome. Busy but great service. Food was lovely and they even offered us a doggy dinner for our Jack Russell.
R. T.
We were excited as we are both gluten free, and having not to interrogate the menu everything was clearly marked DF vegan etc. Great meal , we didn't have room for pudding as the portions were generous
B. C. Z. M.
So glad we found this pretty treasure. Even more because we have our 1 year old pup and this place is the best dog pub we've ever found. Staff are wonderful and so friendly. And we've even booked our first monthly dog walk, which they do, and we can't be more excited that our little girl will meet loads of new friends. And then have a lovely roast afterwards!! We will make it a regular visit for sure. Can't wait to be back soon.
G. G.
We are regulars at the Compass. It has everything you want in a country pub. Good Gluten Free food, good choice of beers and wines, friendly staff, very dog friendly and no children. Nearest place to heaven I can find in the New Forest!!!
R. D.
Very pleasant, friendly pub.
The food was lovely and beer great.
What also delighted us is that not only are dogs welcome, but they also get a free meal
j. m.
Superb gluten free pub with gluten free beer on draft. Excellent service and food even when the place was full. Dogs also made very welcome. We visit whenever we're in the New Forest.
M. B.
Great food, very friendly landlady and staff, extremely covid aware and no children under 12 during the week. Dog friendly too if you have one. I don't think my cats would want to go to a pub anyway 😁. Seriously though, a lovely venue.
E. L.
Fantastic place - Coeliac safe, with vegan and vegetarian options, large portions and great quality food. As a Coeliac, this is the only place I feel 100% safe and relaxed eating, knowing I won’t get glutened- it’s so lovely to be able to safely eat out somewhere again! Also great it’s dog friendly and no children under 12, so the atmosphere is relaxing. Staff are always very friendly and welcoming and cater to all my needs, thank you - would highly recommend The Compass Inn.
J. W.
Went to the Compass whilst on holiday . . I googled gluten free restaurants whilst there and this pub was 50mins drive but so worth it . . Everything on the menu including the puddings were gluten free! Great that we could also take the dog with us. The owner had a lovely chat with us and told us how the pub became gluten free . . So lovely that someone understands what it's like to eat out being coeliac! Definitely recommend this pub and give it five stars!
A. F.
Had only opened on Friday, with new management had a gluten free toastie & chips excellent food and service
S. H.
Amazing that it is all gluten free (but you wouldn’t even know!) plenty of vegetarian/vegan and diary free options too.
S. A.
Absolutely wonderful, food was amazing staff were lovely and friendly and will definitely be going again soon! As a coeliac eating out can be an issue but everything on the menu is gluten free so you can eat what you want!
C. L.
Great food, excellent service. I especially love the no children under 12 policy. We've finally found a lovely pub to enjoy without unruly children ruining our meal. Will definitely be back!
N. S. (.
First visit to The Compass Inn, recommended to us for the gluten free menu as my wife is coeliac and this has been the perfect place to have our silver wedding anniversary lunch today, 13th July. The menu has many starters, mains, and desserts, along with additional choices on a specials list - all gluten free, food heaven for the wife. We chose Hunter's chicken & the liver / bacon special, followed by Eton Mess and chocolate fudge cake. Excellent meals for both and fantastic service. We will return to sample more of this delicious menu. Good Covid secure procedures. Do book in advance as it is very popular and fills quickly from opening at noon. Check their website and social media for further information on this wonderful pub.
C. B.
Fabulous pub, great beer, amazing food and lovely welcome from staff!
J. A.
100% gluten free, so happy that I could choose anything off the menu to eat!! I had whitebait to start and then steak and ale pie, perfect. Service was a bit slow but maybe it was due to no of covers. I'll be back to try out more of the delicious starters eg deep fried brie! Thankyou
L. B.
Perfect little stop for any Coeliac traveller! Menu is ALL GF, GF beer on tap....what more could you want.
Dog friendly too! Free doggy dinners
We called ahead to book as we had the dog and didnt know what to expect. Was busy enough to be glad we had booked - recommend calling ahead
Will be returning for sure
M. B.
Very very nice traditional country pub with lovely staff great food and they love dogs.
"Woody the Sausage dog said his dog' dinner and doggy Ice cream was Ream" Thank you
T. G.
My original review was regarding the gluten free aspect, I am coeliac so a gluten free pub was amazing however the hospitality wasn't always the best from the land lady.
I went this evening, not exclusively gluten free any more but the food standard is still very high and the hospitality was great
c. s.
This is the best ever traditional country pub, with fabulous pub food at reasonable prices. I know this is controversial but for those of us that believe a pub is not an ideal environment for children, this is a haven for a calm, quiet evening with good company and lots of friendly dogs!!!
E. B.
Fantastic classic pub and so fantastic that they have vegan and gluten free options. As a gluten and dairy intolerant person it's so wonderfully refreshing to find a pub that offers such a verity of options.
C. C.
Always a warm welcome with very friendly staff. Mop really knows how to run a great pub. She and her staff are doing their best during these tricky times and succeeding brilliantly. Although we are not gluten intolerant we have noticed when we eat their great menu we don’t feel quite so bloated afterwards. We visit The Compass probably twice a month and there are no vested interests but just want to give our support to this wonderful village and authentic pub. Well done to you all and see you again soon.
P.
Lovely pub, friendly staff, good wholesome food, decent portions. Plenty of vegan options as well as it being all gluten free. Would go again.
N. N. R. C.
Excellent service and excellent premises.
The food is outstanding quality and cooked to perfection.
Lots of locally sourced produce is used in the meals.
They are Gluten Free and in some cases, gluten and dairy free.
The menu and specials board have a wide selection of meals and they have both Vegan and Vegetarian options.
The dessert menu, if you can fit one in is also seasonal and some traditional dishes are available.
They also have some desserts that you wouldn't normally get in a country pub, champagne sorbet for example.
This is a Dog Friendly establishment with dog ice cream on sale!!!
Great outside space and pre covid they have had many barbecues and functions.
It also has a tea room in the outside area, very quaint and the pub also has country themed items on sale around the interior.
Come for a meal, leave with some excellent quality bargains to make your home more cozy.
The pub is very old English style with low beams and cozy open fire, for those nippy days.
All in all highly recommended for a bit of the countryside feel to your day and easy to get to from the M27.
T. F.
As the wife of a Coeliac this is theost fantastic place to come, since his diagnosis we haven't been anywhere that he was able to be comfortable ordering anything and not having to double check. Staff were lovely, atmosphere and decor was great and loved seeing all the pups!
P. C.
Great to be able to choose from the whole menu as I am Coeliac and hence need to avoid gluten. Food was great and staff very friendly - even a gluten free beer on tap- we will be back !
T. S.
We went to The Compass with the family (all adults) for a meal the other night. Had a great time. It's a warm and friendly pub, not excessively posh but comfortable but with a nice atmosphere. Their COVID measures were impressive but not intrusive. The food was excellent and our waitress was lovely. Will definitely be back.
J. M.
Great pub food and all gluten free! The dogs were given treats and were very welcome. We also had someone with lactose intolerance and a few fussy eaters so ended up ordering some changes to the menu but they got it all right. Prices reasonable for the amount of food you get! As a coeliac this place is a godsend!
P. C.
Visited last evening and very impressed. No out of control kids, well behaved dogs sitting quietly, friendly staff and lovely food. Go there folks, you will not be disappointed...Pete
R. H.
Been here a couple of times now and have had a very pleasant experience on both occasions. The first time we had roasts and I have to say they were pretty descent. The second time we went for a week day lunch. They have a good selection of lunch specials which are EXCEPTIONALLY priced for what you get. Portion sizes of mains and starters are healthy; you won’t leave hungry, that’s for sure. Good selection of beers and wines. Dogs are actively encouraged which (in my opinion) is great. They even have a dog walking club who meet once a month. Really warm welcome and excellent service from the staff too. Excellent country pub!
D. C.
Lovely country pub with good food and great staff
j.
We had a lovely meal, a great pub that's dog friendly. Well worth the visit. Staff are very friendly and service is great.
S. W.
Lovely pub, the staff were super polite and our dog even got a free lunch! It was a little pricey for the food however it was good quality and would definitely go back!
H. W.
First time at the Compass inn, food was great and service was even better. The gentleman serving me (I think his name was Will) was very very nice and professional. Great pub all round
E. L.
Service with a smile, cracking pint of cider and decent cheesy chips, perfect weds lunchtime
T. A.
A gem of a find. Completely gluten free menu which was great for our Coeliac daughter. Was a luxury for her to have an entire menu to choose from! The hosts are really friendly and very accommodating. They also a very cute pub dog, so dog friendly too.
P. D.
Good food. Good beer. Friendly staff. Covered outside seating.
What a great find! Lot's of outside seating in a quiet lane close to Poltons Park. Old fashioned cottage pub with original English atmosphere. Dog friendly. No Jukebox. Very tasty food and I couldn't believe it's all Gluten free. Best pudding's ever.
I. P.
Great, friendly pub with lovely service and food. They don't allow kids in which makes it even better.
D. W.
Great gluten free food, it's nice to just order from the the menu without worrying if there could be gluten in the recipe, friendly staff, good place all round
S. H.
Amazing food and it is lovely to be able to go somewhere and not have to worry about cross contamination.
G. B.
Great pub with great food, even gave my dog a free meal of, rice chicken, peas and gravy. Dogs, Adults and over 12 only allowed in pub...brilliant 😁
k. 7.
Just had to give it 5 stars. Guessing it's a peaceful place without any noisy kids around. Doing understand why people are complaining about not being child friendly. You literally have 99.9% of the restaurants in the world to take your kids to
S. G.
Great food, gluten free, no kids and plenty of dogs. Is there a more perfect pub???
Highly recommend
p. b.
Great food and beers at reasonable price. Welcoming staff. Nice garden for summer. Dog friendly BUT pastry all gluten free .Sadly my favourite Steak and Ale pie not so nice now.Shame.
M. W.
Great pub, amazing food and adult only.
C. P.
A beautiful pub, excellent food and very friendly staff, dogs had a dinner (free) and a treat. Will go back if not for the food and staff, but for the peace. Thank you
N. W.
Not as good as it used to be, forgot my veg for my roast dinner ☹ just wish I had told them, I know it would of come double quick. All in all though , still a quaint good old british pub.
C. C.
Never fails to disappoint.....I love that I can have everything and anything on the menu and don't have to stop to think what's going to be G/F and suitable for a Coeliac.
Top of my list🙂
T. E.
Have had several meals here and the food is great tasting but go with a big appetite. The portions are huge. The pub is both dog and people friendly. Staff helpful. Great local pub and 100% gluten free for those that this matters too.
N. M.
This is a great historic pub (does mean it has a low front door so mind your head!). The bar staff are really welcoming and friendly. The menu is 100% gluten free. Great if like me you have an intolerance or allergy. They also offer some GF beers too. In addition they have multiple choices for Vegetariansand Vegans. They pride themselves on being the most dog friendly pub in the New Forest and even organise regular dog walking days.
The food is really good with an extensive menu.
At 6ft2in with big legs I did have a little difficulty getting my legs under the table for two - legs in the corners are quite close (I'm sure I would have been re-seated if I'd asked).
Overall a really nice experience and we will be returning.
D. C.
Great service. I was able to order my dog a meal and my sister who is celiac, was able to order anything she liked rather than being restricted to just a handful of gluten free items. Staff were very friendly.
V. P.
Excellent service and a really good menu considering the Covid crisis. Was given a doggy meal for our German Shepherd and were made to feel welcome, will definitely be returning.
D. G.
We've just discovered the Compass and will definitely be going back. It's a traditional pub with a large selection of wholesome no nonsense food. And unbelievably, it is all gluten free. With 3 celiacs in the family, finding a restaurant where there is more than a few gluten free dishes is hard enough, so the variety at the compass is brilliant. Recommended.
j. c.
Absolutely amazing service and beautiful food. Dog friendly as well. The staff are such genuine people, would definitely recommend
J. O.
Good food. In our experience we felt welcome with our 3 year old. Others have said (in reviews) they didn’t feel children were welcome. Portions were a bit varied: big steak and ale pie and comparatively small liver and mash. Child’s portion was massive!!
L. W.
Really large portions, nice relaxed atmosphere. 100 per cent gluten free kitchen and menu, for which there is a lot to choose from which is rare. Very dog friendly...even provide free dog dinners! Excellent pub and friendly staff, I highly recommend the Compass Inn to anyone.
K. S. J.

First visit yesterday for partners birthday. Lovely warm welcome staff very friendly. The meals we had were very nice with a good selection to choose from. Also very dog friendly. Hope to visit again soon.
J. C.
‘Superb’ is a much-overworked word, but I’m going to use it jut one more time to describe the atmosphere welcome, food and service of this gem of a pub.
S. T.
Really delicious food, friendly staff, would happily come back.
I can't believe people are complaining about not being able to bring children in, just go somewhere else and move on with your life!
R. Y.
A small pub but with a great range of food and drinks. The staff were very friendly and the service was quick with the roast being great in terms of flavour and portion size. Best of all for me is that it is a gluten free pub - even offers a couple of gluten free beers. Staff fully aware of the issues with gluten and happy to discuss this with you prior to ordering - well done the Compass Inn. Will be back soon.
T. A.
Proper homely pub vibes and dog friendly.
Lovely food, big portions and all gluten free.
C. S.
Delicious food in a country pub with a cosy atmosphere
E. W.
We went there because of the advertisement for everything being gluten free. And it 100% was! We had an amazing meal, the staff were so friendly and the food was amazing, such big portions, yummy food and good prices. Will definitely be going back there again soon!!
F. P.
Wonderful pub, the food was really good as was the service and atmosphere. Six of us went on a Saturday night we were met by friendly staff, we had main courses ranging from a mixed grill to haddock and mash, they were all superb, large portions throughout, the grill was very generous indeed plenty of tender meat, the chips were crispy and properly cooked, we all commented on just how good it was
Then we discovered the puddings were free with the main course.
In all with coffee the bill was under £90 for the 6 of us, I just wish more places were like this one
We are very tempted to take our dog and go on one of their Sunday walks, they sound like great fun a forest ramble and then back to the pub for lunch
Visited again Aug 16th 2018 and found it as good as ever, we took our two small dogs and very very surprised as were they to be presented with the free dogs dinner ( chicken with some biscuit and gravy). A small old fashioned country pub that really makes the effort and it is now completely gluten free.
j. P.
Stopped off at The Compass for a ploughman's after a lively dog walk at Calshot beach. Perfect. Food and service exceptional
J. B.
A charming place with friendly staff, comfortable surroundings and a totally gluten free menu. The food was very pleasant and it was such a delight to be able to eat dishes such as suet crust pie when out for dinner. We did have 2 dishes which were not hot enough but this was sorted without fuss. Overall I would highly recommend this place.
K. G.
I have been coming to this pub here since I was little and I absolutely love this pub. Beautiful decor, lovely food and staff- what more could you want!
W. R.
A small and inviting pub with great staff and good hearty food. Excellent for a small celebration or just a night out with a good selection of food and drinks.
J. L.
Staff very welcoming and very friendly. Food was excellent and well presented and hot. Will definitely be returning and also, recommending it to friends.
G. B.
Not only does The Compass Inn serve everything on its menu Gluten free, they have real gluten free ale on draught too! Wonderful atmosphere, excellent food, lovely people and fantastic service. I cannot recommend The Compass Inn highly enough - you would NEVER know everything is gluten free...I had an AMAZING sticky toffee pudding for dessert - and I NEVER normally have dessert at all! The portions are MORE than generous too! Fabulous experience - and I will DEFINITELY be going again as soon as I can!
B. M.
We came to The Compass Inn purely for their gluten free menu. Visiting from Australia we were super keen for some "english" favourites that we couldn't have at many pubs. It was great. Super cute place too. The menu was a little expensive (but most GF things are) but we really enjoyed it. Well worth a visit.
A. C.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming and the pub itself is very cosy - although they've gone a little bit over the top on the doggy paraphernalia. Makes such a change to eat somewhere where _everything_ is gluten free and you don't have to spend ages asking about allergen lists and separate preparation areas. Food is standard pub fayre but tasted great, service was quick and portion sizes were massive - we could barely move afterwards! Will definitely be returning.
H. S.
Lovely country side all gluten free pub with vegan, df, etc options. Very friendly atmosphere and great food. Friendly pub dogs there too. Would highly recommend.
G. F.
A real gem of a pub. Absolutely amazing food at reasonable prices. Great atmosphere all very typical old country pub. Dogs are welcome and its ALL gluten free!
Parking is a little tight though.
A. S.
Very friendly, great food with lots of choice and interesting decor/gifts for sale. Will come back
G. H.
Wonderful pub, not only 100% gluten free, but genuinely dog friendly. Can't wait to be back in the area again. I will visit any time I'm near the New Forest. Totally recommend!
P. C.
Fantastic food, great portion size too! Lovely cosy atmosphere with very helpful staff! And a completely Gluten free menu with lots of veggie choices too! Win win
A. M.
Fantastic little pub. With a number of.my family members either bring Coeliac or gluten intolerant, this was a welcome addition to our "go to" list. As if it couldn't get better, it's dog friendly too!!
L. C.
Warm & friendly. Compass Inn the fire was lit on wet Sunday afternoon lots of people were eating it looked very good. They are now specialising in Gluten-free food . definitely worth a trip and look for dates of there dog walking offers with breakfast & lunch
r. w.
All the meals are gluten free and very good, and the real bonus is they serve a number of gluten free beers, including one on draught. I've never seen that in any other pub. A true gluten free haven
j. B.
Lovely food and great friendly staff,
Totally GF and dairy free 😋, will definitely be going again 🥰
S. G.
Delicious food, great gluten free menu and fantastic for those with Coeliac. Friendly staff.
T. W.
1st visit today. Recommended as ALL MENU is gluten free. Had fantastic roast beef dinner. Service first class and made really welcome. Also dog friendly. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
B. T.
One of (if not) the most dog friendly pubs in the New Forest!
They organise a Sunday dog walk out in the forest each month, with bacon rolls and roast/BBQ included.
Plenty of seating both inside and out for eating and the staff are always super friendly and welcoming.
Nice selection of beers on tap and a couple of areas tucked away n the corners of the pub with which to sit and enjoy them!
E. M.
I have never written a review in my life but felt I had to write one for this amazing pub. To find a pub that was advertised as exclusively gluten free was just the best thing ever for our family. We find eating out with our 6 year old who has coealic disease often to be a stressful experience with us often spending time in a restaurant looking through their huge allergies folder to check what my daughter can safely eat and with her being a typical 6 year old picky eater this often made a simple lunch out hugely stressful. To eat in a pub where my daughter could literally eat anything on the menu was amazing and she could even try food we had ordered which we never are able to do. You made our weekend away so much less stressful thank you!
C. P.
Meal was lovely cant fault it but never asked if all was okay also waited forever to order pudding gave up in the end lady with blond hair was lovely but customer care from waiting staff not good wont be back
m. r.
Can't recommend this highly enough. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. Large portions, I couldn't manage a pud, great service too. Will visit again soon. So nice to eat a meal without worrying if theres hidden gluten somewhere!
J. S.
Visited the pub whilst camping nearby and one of our party being Celiac recommended. So well worth the visit we ALL thoroughly enjoyed our meals albeit gluten free even our 3 youngsters in the party!! Very calm, olde worlde, traditional country pub very nice indeed!
C. D.
Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, great country pub, dog friendly, fantastic gluten free menu which serves high quality pub classics plus special board, good beer choice including gluten free options. The HSB was spot on. Whether you are gluten free or not this place is near perfect for a pub. Highly recommended.
S. M.
Fantastic food again. My kids and I are always welcomed in. The food is fantastic and good value. Great for a Gluten Free wife. Great drink selection with a nice notice to remind the kids to behave :) love it.
D. C.
Absolutely fantastic if you're a dog owner or lover. Not so good if you have small kids that need high chairs but there's plenty local that cater for that. The food is fantastic, good portions and a free pudding with a good selection of drinks.
M. D.
Beautiful pub, lovely atmosphere. Fantastic food. Staff & service above & beyond. Definitely recommend this pub 👌
L. B.
Cosy traditional pub. We've just had a roast beef lunch here and it was excellent. Tasty and plenty of it, although if I were to be really picky I'd have liked a bit more veg. (we're big eaters!) We'll def be going back.
S. S.
We've just had an amazing lunch at the Compass Inn! The welcome was warm and friendly especially for our cockapoo puppy (thank you for the chew).
There's a fabulous menu and a yummy specials board to choose from too! The food was so good and portions are very generous!
We'll definitely be back because we want to do the Sunday walk and have a roast dinner!
We definitely ecommend the Compass Inn!
R. B.
Had evening meal tonight. Really nice helpful staff and lovely meal. Dog friendly pub. We had two dogs with us and everyone was so friendly. I’m sure we will be back later in the week. Thank you, The Compass Inn.
J. L.
A great local pub many good beers and good food, gluten free as well. Love the place and we are going back in a couple of days
S. J.
Great grub and service. A dog-friendly pub run by friendly staff.
G. S.
We had a lunch at the pub on our way home from New Forest and would recommend it highly in terms of quality of food, value for money and friendliness.
S. R.
First time to visit the pub. Nice selection of beers. The menu of food gives a good choice of what to eat. All dogs are welcome with owners
S. S.
Super dog friendly pub with really nice polite staff amazing food cannot think of a single reason not to recommend
Many thanks for a great afternoon
J. R.
Lovely pub. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Very dog friendly. Cosy and lovely to be back inside a pub!

Lovely pub with the best gluten free menu you'll ever see! Relaxed local & friendly atmosphere. Good prices. Happy days
A. B.
Very friendly, offer real ales - Double Drop. Covered external drinking area, dog s allowed, worth a visit.
K. W.
100% gluten free. wow. first time we have ever eaten out as a family and felt totally relaxed and at ease. Food was also tasty and a very fair price.
A. W.
Lovely little pub, great food nice big plates friendly staff. Only thing is they don't like you bringing your own birthday cake into the pub did allow us after we spoke with management you do have to bring own napkins, folks etc 🤔🤔
J. E.
Wanted to go too view pub .Had home cooked meal good value. Could do with better selection of real ales, boom bar ,6x ,ect
G. H.
This pub serves only gluten free food. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes and desserts so is a real treat for anyone who is gluten intolerant or not. It is also a dog friendly pub and arranges a weekly dog walk.
H. R.
Fantastic food for dietry issues and others who dont have issues - 100 % love the fact it is grown ups only and more places should do this.
K. S.
Lovely friendly pub with good food and beer made doubly-better by their policy of adult only and being super dog-friendly with free supper for our terriers. Thank you.
T. W.
100% Gluten free. All customers made to feel welcome. Including those with disabilities who usually get ignored. It was such a joy to be able to eat a meal with my family.
P. W.
Good pub food, very friendly service, good size portions and nice atmosphere. Good garden for sunny days 🌻
D. n.
Lovely pretty pub, beautiful flowers and oh so peaceful. Great friendly staff and a lovely lunch.
L. M.
Gluten Free!! Good food and nice atmosphere. Great to have a whole menu of gluten free choices. Now that it's 100% gluten free there is also no risk of contamination. I eat here regularly and have never had any problems.
K. R.
Lovely food, generous portions and dog friendly. Puddings inclusive in main meal prices (but whether you'll have space for one is another matter!) Great place to stop with the dog.
d. w.
First visit and a very friendly place and the food was well priced. Very pleased with the complet service. Defiantly a second visit on the cards 👍up from me .
A. N.
A typical English pub selling great food. 100% gluten free. Staff friendly and obliging. Lovely setting. Highly recommend.
H. B.
Lovely food and lovely people. This place is heaven if you suffer from coeliac disease 👍
B. H.
Dog friendly and for those who need to avoid certain foods, it is also a vegan friendly. Portions are on the ample side. Pub is friendly and definitely worth a visit
C. H.
Super dog friendly and all gluten free. Lovely meal with friends and the dog loved her doggy dinner.
A. B.
Went for the dog meet on Sunday morning. The bacon roll is a thoughtful touch but not needed as it's too close to lunch. Would be better to just charge a straight £15, skip the roll and go for the walk. The walk itself was rough and soggy, and the map given would be far better as written directions. We cut it short and went back for the roast early which turned out to be a good idea because we missed the double busy period of the regular Sunday roast goers plus the dog walkers returning. The roast was average and swimming in gravy (luckily I don't mind) and pudding again not bad. Atmosphere quite nice and car park gets rammed full by lunch. So basically a fairly satisfying meal but wouldn't do the dog meet again.
P. N.
Very friendly pub love dogs and give a free meal to your dog
M. D.
Great Pub with fantastic food which happens to be Gluten free for those that need to avoid Gluten. Will be going back very soon.
J. D.
Excellent range of food. Good service . Dog friendly. No children. Perfect.
l. c.
If you have coeliac disease, or any other gluten intolerance....this place is a godsend!!
They also do a good selection that are lacto-free and/or Vegan. Otherwise EVERYTHING is gluten-free! Prices are reasonable, you can have a large or smaller portion of many items and there's a specials board. Do please note: unlike many "chain" pubs e.g the Wetherspoons/Harvesters/Beefeater type.....The Compass does NOT serve food all day. Check out their website or Facebook, I believe it's 12-2 for lunch.
F. O.
Traditional country pub. Food is pretty good and at reasonable prices. Very dog friendly; even to the point of providing doggie dinners to diners with dogs. Friendly service.
J. C.
Absolutely amazing, stunning food, great drinks and music. 100% Gluten Free and other allergies catered for.
Been several times now. Left speechless. Thank you compass inn.
T. P.
food was delivered quickly but staff are more interested in having a chat with locals rather than serving one time guests. We were on two separate occasions (once when ordering and once when paying) ignored at the bar in favour of locals who walked by the bar.
A. W.
Great gluten free food choices from a gluten free kitchen, a choice of beer on pump, easily makes this a pub of choice if you are a Coeliac. Plus let's not forget very dog friendly pub and beer garden.
L. M.
Love the dog friendly atmosphere. A big thank you to the owner for banning young children who's parrents let them ruin other people experiences. You're the best!!!
M. M.
Beautiful little pub, great menu! Very friendly and welcoming bar lady. We had a lovely lunch, thank you.
T. C.

S. S.
Lovely place. Gluten free menu and dog friendly. The food is great and the staff friendly and helpful. Cannot recommend enough.
C. P.
Excellent food and beer and I don't have to put up with parents that can't control there noisy brats running riot. Wish more public house would follow these simple rules
M. A.
Lovely country pub off the beaten track. Great food, good variety and great quality. Friendly staff and locals. Also most food if gluten free.
M. H.
This place only does gluten free, so was eager to try it. The portion sizes are huge, too big. The staff are friendly enough but there was something missing from the atmosphere.
S. h. B.
Holly had lasagne and i had the steak and ale pie both were delicious. Great beer great service.
a. t.
Still a real pub. Obviously great if you have a gluten intolerance. Dogs very welcome. Good selection of ale.
J. S.
Good pub food, little on the expensive side for what it is but lovely atmosphere
S. B.
Me and my family recently visited the Compass inn to celebrate a birthday, the food and service was fine..however during our meal i was sat opposite a sign that stated "For the comfort and enjoyment of all our customers children/babies must be well behaved and quiet at all times else they will be asked to leave " not sure if this sign is meant to be a joke or not but it made me feel quite uncomfortable to the point i wanted to hurry up with our food and leave in case my one year old made too much noise or acted a little fussy as young children can. If this is a joke i think it needs to be worded better and if its not a joke then i would like to see a similar sign but for the adult woman who was laughing very loudly throughout our meal..meaning we couldn't hear each other at times..Safe to say it is not a child friendly pub so we will not be returning.
S. P.
Just saw the land lady on ITV for GMB. I initially was sceptical at first about banning kids but once she explained it, I found myself agreeing with her viewpoint. If kids are misbehaving, then it should be the parents' responsibility to control them. I do think this policy should be reviewed occasionally as a small number of kids and parents have spoilt it for others.
M. M. R. A.
Excellent food all gluten free. Lovely staff very friendly made us feel most welcome including the dogs
D. B.
Great country pub. All food gluten free, very reasonable prices, good service for a group.
K. P.

One of the best local locals there is . Foods good .reasonably priced with good portion size . Its dog friendly . The staff are great all the time not just when the boss is about . Christmas meals for groups / we had ours there last year and intend to go back again this year . Well done mop
D. S.
Had a very nice pint and have decided to go back and dine there, the menu looks good and the Sunday roasts look very appealing.
M. S.

Best pub in the New Forest, dog friendly and bans screaming children. Food is great!! Staff are lovely.
C. B.
Great for parents to have somewhere to go on a night off from children. Bravo to the landlady for offering something that few pubs do.
M. S.
Love this 100% gluten free pub. Friendly and helpful staff. Large portions of beautiful food.
p. c.
Never been there... hardly likely to either... I don't drink, but it looks a cosy kind of a place to eat, drink and be merry. I like that it has a free stopover facility for camper vans and motorhomes, and that they invite dog walker events. Seems a friendly sort of place.
A. M.
First time here with the gang from work..very welcoming and friendly staff. Food was lush!!!! Highly recommended 👌
M.
Absolutely delightful gluten free dining. Perfect for coeliacs.
P. W.
Good food, maybe slightly overpriced but no complaints and good service. Beer garden is a paved and semi roofed area with well looked after flower pots/baskets etc - downside is it's next to road with occasional traffic.
A. W.
Fantastic pub. Amazing atmosphere with good forest location. The food is great with a good variety of British pub foods with vegan, veg, df, options.
R. C.
Nice friendly staff very helpful well looked after
R. H.
A dog friendly pub that serves great pub food and has a welcoming service. The servings are on the large side, so prepare yourself. They even organise dog walks. We will be going back!!

Great , I'd rather say it's no good to keep Pepe away so I can always get a table , but the truth is you can't take it away from the great village pub
It's blinking lovely
G. S.
As a coeliac it's great to find good traditional pub food out of a 100% gluten free kitchen and gf ale on hand pump
L. B.
Good vegan options and 100% gluten free menu too
C.
Great gluten free menu, but staff are usually quiet unfriendly and are shameless about rushing you/moaning if you are late for a booking. Quite funny if you're in the mood to take it.
S. H.
Beautiful pub, extremely nice landlady and great selection of good pub food all gluten free....... and delicious!
F. P.
Fantastic gluten free only food. Incredible. When we went, desert was oncluded when ordering a main - bargain!
S. H.
This is a great place to eat and drink the food was outstanding, plus you can take your dog in now that's fantastic, not many places you can do that. Highly recommended.
N. B.
Only here because the land lady was on GMTV, I started off thinking she was wrong to ban children but then when she explained who the offenders were I found myself nodding with agreement.
I just hope I don’t start reading the Daily Mail 🥶
R. H.
I am coeliac so this is a great place to eat. Good food, large portions and free pudding if you buy main course and drink.
