Reviews of The Crown Inn
M.
Okay pub, food wasn't great - asked for a medium steak but got a medium rare one, can't complain as it was on the 2 for 1 deal of the day, which makes the price very reasonable. Pet friendly which is nice (landlord's dog is adorable). Recommend for grabbing a pint for a decent price.
L. H.
First visit since covid restrictions ended. Used to love eating here, but disappointed in our meals this time. Food wasn't hot, not helped by being served on cold plates. Burgers were burnt. Love the atmosphere of the pub so will give it another go sometime
R. P.
Average pub, with reasonably priced drinks for a student saturated location. Wasn't aware of any disabled facilities, but that's not to say they don't exist. Decent sized car park.
E. T.
We came here not for the beer, but for the grub. I got a crown inn burger, and it was indeed a delicacy. The food was great and had large portions, but the wait was a bit long.
Y. C.
Good for a local pub. I had the chilli, my friend had the burger, that and a couple of soft drinks was about £25, so very good value for money. Food was good, I’d eat here again. Pleasantly lively, but not too noisy or busy which was nice (Wednesday eve)
K. M.
Ok for a drink but I will wait for someone to post that the food is OK until eating there again
A. A.
I liked the environment but the orange 🍊 juice wasn't good at all.
s. s.
One of the local pub near university of Southampton. We sometimes going there for lunch and drink. The food quality is average and my favourite food is their mushroom soap, it’s really delicious.
M. T.
Really enjoyable return to The Crown. Friendly quick service, nice food at very good prices. Shame that the pub was so quiet as a pub this good deserves to be better supported. Will be back.
C. M.
Pleasant and quiet for a Saturday, a nice change from many other southampton pubs.
A. P.
Revamped Menu after reopening offers far more options and generous portions
N. J.
I have been going to this pub regularly for the last 15 years. It has some of the best nachos in town (believe me, I have tried most) The atmosphere is really good and there is lots of character! I would recommend it!
D. S.
Great food great service and great value for money
b. b.
First time I've been there great boozer
C. R.
My son recently moved into student house share in High crown Mews and we called in to the Crown Inn a couple of times and the food and drinks were excellent well priced and plenty of food. . Three cleared plates afterwards.
X. W.
traditional style and goog taste. Great ribs but the sauce is a little too sweet.
A. D.
Had a fantastic night in this wee pub food was great, landlord and staff made you feel really welcome
Would recommend this place for all age groups and families,
A. R.
Lovely pub with friendly staff and good food. Their isn't tons of choices but what is there usually have met my group of friends needs. Recommend the ribs as they are nice and falls off the bone.
I've been there four or five times and will probably be back again. Seating outside is available although I usually will sit inside. Seen a dog with its owner inside so may be dog friendly location as well
C. D.
Lovely place. Good food especially fish and chips. Very nice staff.
O. S.
Love this place. Quiet possibly the only place in Southampton which sells Hoegaarden. Good food...most of the time. Friendly atmosphere, attentive staff, quick service. The crowd is a mixed bunch. Being close to university, students, lecturers, local regulars, you name it. Free parking, tucked away from main roads with easy access to them. Lunch, dinner or just night out it is an excellent place to visit with the family ( kids included) or friends. Highly recommended.
J. a. N. D. C.
We love the Sunday Roasts here, often pop up for a mid week meal too. We'll worth tge money
M. L.
There's an interesting dynamic here. The place was stone-dead over the summer holiday -- great for quiet nights out as a couple, but quiet enough to make us wonder how they stayed in business. Then the university term began, and now you can hardly get a table, even mid-week. There are always several good real ales on offer (HSB, Landlord, Ringwood Best (or is it 49er?), and something else) as well as Aspall and Stowford Press (and others) if you prefer cider. Food is roughly what you'd expect but it's good value, with generous portions, and there's a specials board that always has several more adventurous options. Staff are friendly. Food is served until 9:30pm -- some other places stop at nine. We've always managed to find a space in the car park. There's a log-effect gas fire at each end of the pub -- nice in the winter months. Background music is a bit haphazard -- I think the bar staff just play whatever they fancy -- but it's not too loud or intrusive. Come here if you fancy something a bit less stylised than the Brewhouse and Kitchen round the corner and you want to save some money.
K. C.
A cozy pub with friendly staff and atmosphere. Very good for groups (especially students societies). Unfortunately they've recently increased their prices, so while the food and drink selection is very good, it's now becoming a tad less affordable.
Also it's dog friendly, which is always a plus.
B. S.
4 Diner's for lunch 25th August 2016. Recommended to me by 2 others, not disappointed. A typical English Pub (Inn), interesting historic paraphernalia decorating the Bar. Very busy, but manned by very efficient flexible staff who have been trained in all aspects of running a successful operation.
Excellent service, great food enjoyed by all, good range of Tap beers and Cider. Enjoyed very much and recommend to all who are looking for a great venue to eat.
4 stars, the male toilets were very smelly, I felt that they had not been cleaned from the previous evening as it was just after mid-day, hardly time enough for them to be in this condition. It's easily fixed and could be just a glitch i am sure.
J. P.
Warm, cosy place. Good beers, friendly service. Log fires in the cold weather. One of my favourite pubs. Highly recommend the crown Inn burger - absolute classic.
J. P.
Hidden away near Southampton University, I had never been here before but met my walking group for an evening pint. The food menu looks really good, and it seems to have a cheerful atmosphere. Worth another look I think.
A.
Friendly staff, great food, cheap drinks and a cosy atmosphere.
The food here is always excellent. You get a sizeable portion for the price that you pay, and in some cases, you may not be able to finish up the meal due to just how much food there is.
The drink selection available is good, with lagers, stouts, ales, IPAs, and much more on tap and bottled. It is a friendly place to sit back, relax and enjoy a drink. The cosy atmosphere is lovely.
Overall, it's a great place to grab a drink and food.
I. C.
Great local pub with a good selection of beer and cider. The food menu is a winner and hasn't changed much over the last 20 years I've been going there. After all why mess with something that works?
I. F.
Real nice pub. Bar staff really friendly and welcoming. Good choice of drinks and some really nice pub grub. Well worth a visit and only 5 minutes from Portswood sand about 3 or 4 minutes.
S. G.
Bit of a let down the starter of pate was nice the Scampi was ok the French fries not good ar all & the curry was like a boil in the bag sorry guys lovely staff tho
D. W.
The down is a brilliant pub. They have indoor and outdoor covered seating, great food and reasonably priced drinks
P. D. C.
Nice and quality food in this pub, a bit hidden but close to University. The staff is nice, and they offer a good amount of different dishes, with daily specials. A good choice for Friday lunch.
N. E.
Nice place to hang out with friends.
K. B.
Literally the best pub in the world! Great value and Dre is a top bloke.
J. E.
Lovely pub, had the crown burger & chips, was delicious, very generous on their chips! They don't start serving food until 6pm so was a bit busy but other than that was great!
S. M.
Great pub with friendly staff, great food. Mixed up my order, were nice and quick about fixing it. Pretty good selection on tap.
G. P.
Great place to have a beer with more enlightened people of various races of fun (islamics discounted). Food good and plenty of it. Sorry for the Islamist slur but even in a great place like Southampton where race or creed or religion has never been a problem; ; I hesitate; and with a heavy heart I have to say they as a whole, do not intergrate. However, always welcome to sit at my table if able to be compliant to my freedoms to do as I wish without disruption to others free will.
H. C.
Great at what it does. Standard pub food at a good price. Not too noisy. Nice fire! Friendly staff.
D. S.
Like a lot of locals it's changed but enjoyed our lunch
L. A.
Good beer and beautiful place.
A. M.
We visit The Crown now and again mainly at weekends. It's a nice typical old pub, with a good atmosphere and a mixture of age groups. The staff are always nice and the food is good too with generous portions .
J. E.
The Crown Inn is a traditional pub and although it's near the university it attracts a wide range of people. The food is home-cooked, tastes great (especially the Crown Inn Burger) and is also pretty cheap compared to most pubs in the area (i.e The Cowherds). It's fairly popular, as you can imagine, so you would be advised to book a table day or two in advance.
A. J.
Been a few times and always lovely but took my daughter and some friends for birthday lunch we only sandwiches and 2 ploughmans but it took over a hr i understand it was busy but people who came in after us got there food first
K. T.
The charm of The Crown was its "hasn't changed in 50 years" vibe, however with increasing prices you may as well go down the road to The Brewhouse to spend a tad extra and have a much nicer meal. The cheapest £3.70 beer on tap went up 6 months ago to £3.90 and now it's gone up again to £4? No thanks. Also doesn't employ male bar staff as a matter of principle, which gives you a clue to the culture here.
P. O.
Good beers...good food...nice staff...relaxed atmosphere......this pub has had a decorative makeover! Sunday night quiz is very popular!
L. S.
Best burgers ever, staff are always friendly. Really can't find fault with this place. Make sure you book a table as it can get busy.
M. K.
Lovely cosy pub which can get very busy. Limited menu but what's on offer is lovely and you do get plenty. Highly recommend the nachos.....
J. C.
A reliable pub, sometimes busy but always with a spare seat somewhere. Excellent nachos and a good range of ales. Usually a lit fire inside.
W. G.
We've been multiple times and never had a bad meal. Very generous with their portion sizes, just a shame the menu hasn't changed in the last decade
R. G.
Great food at decent prices, great service, great atmosphere, would highly recommend
K. S.
Great pub, we have been coming here for years . I think I would like to see the food menu changed from time to time. Great beers and wines, very friendly staff
D. W.
The staff are always friendly, enjoyable quiz on Sunday's although been a while since I last went to it.
Really enjoy the half rack of ribs and doorstep cheesy garlic bread.
J. S.
Excellent food. The crown Inn burger is awesome. You get to customise what is in it. Fairly student pub as close to the uni. Nice atmosphere
B. C.
Nice food and a good choice of real ales and wines. Very busy, but that's a good thing. Friendly staff.
h. d.
Best kept secret in Southampton. Great food at very reasonable prices. Decor needs an upgrade. Friendly staff. Booking in advance recommended.
F. L.
Good selection of beers and good ribs. The other things on the menu are not at the same level. Good for groups. Always very crowded on Friday evenings.
T. M.
Very nice, quite busy but has a nice atmosphere. There's good outdoor seating, and the drinks are reasonably priced.
B. L.
Good burgers and fries. A friendly atmosphere. Service can take a while when it is busy. Overall a great place to eat.
G. S.
Brewhouse and Kitchen...Great thanksgiving meal when another venue miss sold
F.
Good pub for locals and students. Generally quiet. Serves food until late. Has outside seating under cover.
A. M.
Great beer. Warm and cosy inside. Decent food at a good price. A good pub all round.
M. L.
First visit for a farewell do. Only spent an hr in there so can't do full review. Looked like a typical local pub, friendly, food available (specials on board) outside (covered) seating area
A. W.
Great food and good to go to an old fashioned pub
P. W.
Gammon steak was lovely.
Chicken burger was dry and inedable so sent it back. Staff very apologetic.
A. T.
Traditional 'corner' pub. Serves great pub food, is dog friendly and has two fires on colder days. Also handy for a post Common dog walk
P. H.
Great pub hidden away in Highfield. I went to a pub quiz there recently which was very enjoyable. Good selection of beer and the chili con carne I had was very good. Recommended
I. W.
Good food at great value. Excellent size portions. Good atmosphere too.
C. L.
Good food that you can always rely on. Friendly staff and great cosy atmosphere inside.
A. B.
Great pub and atmosphere and the food is exceptional although have to say, the menu hasn't changed in over 10 years :(
P. D.
Food was good (typical pub grub). Fairly quiet on a Wednesday evening which was what we wanted for conversation tome
M. H.
The longest running quiz in town over 26 years and still the most entertaining 8.30pm every Sunday great grub too.
M. N.
Good local pub. Sometimes too crowded but posible to find a spot for a drink, or some food. Kitchen could be open for longer, but it works fine
a. t.

Met with friends for lunch and as it was Wednesday we had the 2 curries for £17.95. Good choice. My husband and his friend had the beef madras, my friend had lamb Rogan Josh and I had the chicken tikka. All excellent with poppadums and naan. Would recommend.

(Translated) An old-fashioned pub where everything has remained as it is. Excellent cuisine (ah! those burgers and natchos!), pleasant service (at the bar, as is customary) and very friendly regulars! 9 draft beers, including 4 dark ones, and 3 ciders. Warmly recommended!
