Reviews of The Forest Inn Ashurst
S. T.
Great place to chill and enjoy a drink. Great live music too...Good band called Anthology on the night we went playing some great songs. Definitely worth a visit.
P. F.
Called in for weekday lunch. Good pub menu. Good prices too. Nice staff. Was not too busy when I was there, but can get busy weekends especially Summertime and Sundays for roasts.
J. G. W.
Really friendly pub. Good food and lovely garden.
R. W.
Nice interior. Lots of space to sit outside. We came here for BritStops.
R. B.
We called in today in search of a nice meal and found it at this very welcoming pub. The outside was well lit and decorated and is obviously well cared for. We had the choice of almost any of the tables in the restaurant area with only a couple of the other tables occupied. This is a great pity because if we all continue to avoid such lovely places they may not be available in the future. After signing in on a form near the entrance we went to the bar. We received a friendly and warm welcome and after ordering drinks at the bar they were delivered to our table. The menu is rather limited but there was enough of a choice for us. I chose the forest burger with chips and salad and my wife had fish and chips. Both were served quickly and were perfectly cooked. My burger was obviously home made and delicious and the salad had a good variety of fresh ingredients. The fish was a little thin and seemed to have been once frozen rather than being fresh and was a little disappointing but the batter was tasty and everything else about the meal was perfect. Although we did not have any of our grand dogs with us the place was very dog friendly and this lead to several interesting conversations all at a safe social distance. If you are passing pop in this is a pub we cannot afford to lose.

First time to Ashurst. We decided to go back to this pub after drivng past it for our walk in the woods. Very friendly service and we all loved the home cooked food. A lovely experience.
M. C.
Lovely staff, very friendly and great food. Can't wait to go back. Cocktails to die for🍸😍
G. J.
The bungalow pub as it's so recognised now, has been through many transformations but is holding steady as a friendly and simple pub offering food & ideal to stop off for refreshments. A garden area and covered front seating area allows you to watch the traffic go by. The cheesy chips always win me over!
W. B.
Fantastic host felt so welcome and the food was delicious....Would highly recommend this little gem....
L. T.
What a lovely pub! Superb home cooked food. Huge portions! Liver and bacon was absolutely delicious. My daughter had the chicken burger which was amazing. She normally eats main course and pudding, but couldn't finish main course as so big. Having said all that, the icing on the cake for us was when the lovely landlord came out with a huge plate of ham for our dog! So very kind and thoughtful. Think our dog was pretty impressed too! Thank you so much.
T. b.
Nice little old English pub with great tasty homemade food.
Dog friendly bar and separate eating area.
Music nights and themed food nights are worth having a look at.
Kids play area for the sumny days.
T. M.
Popped in for food and football as we were staying nearby. Very friendly and helpful staff, dog friendly too. Our dog was spoilt rotten! Ordered homemade pie and lasagne. Great homecooked food, generous portion size for the money.
Also noticed a huge beer garden for the warmer days / nights.
R. H.
Really nice food. Great service. Kids enjoyed running around outside after a busy morning at the wildlife park.
C. R.
We have been staying nearby for the last week and have eaten in all 3 nearby pubs.
This pub is the best by a million percent.
The staff are amazing... attentive and really good at their jobs, always smiling and spot on with service.
The food is lovely... we tried the home made pie which was yummy.
The Whitebait starter was very good too. Mixed grill massive- but very tasty.
Very very reasonable. Good wine and beers.
Definitely recommend.
R. S.
Came hear for a wake after a friends funeral. Could not of chosen a more friendlier place. All staff were polite and welcoming as were the owners. Food was fabulous, even though there was a delicious buffet we had chosen to sample the menu, and we were very pleased we did. Also sold my husbands favourite wine so he was even happier. Will definitely be returning soon. Great outdoor space too.
I. T.
Stopped here on Monday this pub has the nicest staff and the best tasting food on the south coast. You can tell the food is "really hand made" no 'bing chef(microwave)' like most of the other pubs in the area. Really worth stopping here we will be back soon. Prices are really reasonable as well.
L. G.
1st time visiting the pub since New management have taken over. Had a nice feel to it and love what they have done to the garden out front. Great pint, minimal real ale selection though.
What I didn't appreciate was having to call out to gain attention from both staff behind the bar who were more interested in their phones with backs turned to the customers. 1 staff member even had headphones in.
Or has hospitality changed that much?
D. F.
Stopped for food but kitchen is closed for refurb, re-opens Wednesday. Had a drink & sat in the lovely garden
A. M.
We used to come here for the Sunday roasts which were lovely. We have visited recently, and realised that it is now under new management. The staff were nice and the prices of the roast dinners are very good and good portions too, however, we were disappointed as the roast dinner tasted bland.
p. f.
Very friendly staff, lovely food & great beer!
P. B.
A refreshing new family have taken over this well established pub that has struggled in the past. I think with their positive friendly approach they will make it work and I'm happy to visit again after a time away. A good selection of drinks and food with plenty of outdoor seating, and a fresh inside. Live music is also back on the list which normally goes down well in the village. Well done guys.
S. O.
What an amazing family run pub! The owners (Ian and Jo) are lovely and are great hosts. The live music is great and really added to the pub. Will definitely be returning.
M. D.
We had a great time here. The band were really good and the barstaff excellent. The only downside was that there were no real ales as there had been no delivery.
M. S.
Just popped in for Sunday lunch with a group of friends on the way home from a camping trip. Definitely worth a visit. Great food, generous portions, excellent value for money and Yorkshire puddings to die for ! Would highly recommend.
D. N.
Excellent food, friendly staff. Unfortunately low / no stock of bitter or stout otherwise would have been 5 stars.
R. M.
Great locals pub. Wide range of spirits and beers. Large garden with play area for the kids. Staff are very attentive. Can’t wait to come back!
G. P.
Had a lovely lunch there. Really friendly staff. Great food appropriately priced. Freshly home cooked. First time we’ve been there. We will visit again. They also served New Forest ice cream. Lush.
B. W.
Lovely food selection. I had a Cheese Ploughman's and my husband had Sausage, Mash, Peas and Onion Gravy. Both very tasty.
However, I would have liked to have a half ham/half cheese but this, for some reason, wasn't allowed 🤔 Therefore, I did find the amount of cheese slightly too much.
G. C.
Great Pub, one of the best in the village. Ian and Jo are a lovely couple, you can't fault them. The food is excellent, will go back time and time again.......This couple are trying damn hard to make it work, as long as the village supports them I can see them going from strength to strength. Heres hoping they'll be here for a long time.🤘🤘😃
D. C.
WOW!!! What an amazing pub! Food was absolutely amazing, plenty of ales on offer and had cocktail tasting on the night we visited! I honestly think this is the best pub I have ever been to and only wish I was more local
C. S.
Absolutely lovely autsanding choise to spend a great relaxing time with the children and even your loved pets!!
Outdoors providing a large green area with a slide, the kids had a blast, running around and playing!!! Lots of fun!!!
Children loved seeing 2 horses around the back on another property field.
Confy settings too, you won't wanna leave!!
As for the food ,menu has plenty to choose from, and they went for cheese burger with fries!!!
Absolutely delicious, way more than they could eat 😁 a juice and ice-cream as a complementary treat!!! What else can we ask for...nothing at all!!! 😁👏
Social distance is not a concern as all tables had lots of space in between.
It goes without saying but needs to be emphasise as all staff members were polite, friendly and attentively to any requests!!!
The team working on the afternoon we visited was spot on,and couldn't leave with a better impression!!!
Thank you so much and well do to you all!!!
Less but not least th menu prices are affordable and competitive.
Undoubtedly we will be in more often!!!
Keep up the autsanding customer service with such delicious quality food!!
M. J.
Very welcoming atmosphere. Decided to have food. What a good decision! All home cooked and tasted delicious. Nothing too much trouble for our server Gemma. Welcomed our wet muddy dogs with a choice of inside or out. We chose out as it was quite a nice day and they were really wet! Table service excellent. Highly reccomend and will be returning.
A.
Six of us went for lunch today, booked at short notice. Lovely pub, very welcoming, friendly staff and the food was delicious. I have no problem recommending this pub.
C. S.
Went here on the off chance on our way home from collecting my daughter from University. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was delicious and the cider was cold. It was a lovely interlude..
S. B.
Good pub food prices and the entertainment was an added bonus when we booked to eat. The young girl singing Eden was exceptional talented with an incredible voice for her age.
J. E.
Stopped here for dinner today, felt very welcome and the meal was lovely (home made chips - my favorite). They said dog friendly, and they really were. Stop here if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed.
K. Q.
Went there for mothers day which was the second time in the month it has been under new management. The food was excellent both time's and the staff are friendly. Reasonably good selection of beer, but not much of a choice in single malts. They are very dog friendly and will serve you near the bar if you have a dog. Book in advance for busy time's.
I. J.
We had Sunday lunch here and were very impressed. Quality of the roast good, and puddings also delicious. We were fitted in without booking and there were some very nice touches from the owner such as offering extra veg and gravy without charge. I picked up from earwigging that the owners were new this year and that the previous ones had not done the pub's reputation much good so I can only say that all the right things are being done now. Has the feel of a local village pub for drinking but also nice for eating without giving in to the chain/foodie pub vibe or prices. If that's your bag then this pub wins hands down over the others local to it. Give it a go
P. S.
Pleasant atmosphere, arrived late in the afternoon, so they could not order, a light lunch. However, very good for young children, clean staff more than helpful.
B. M.
very friendly new management looking to make this a pub everyone can enjoy.
have enjoyed all our visits so far. they have good guest ales on tap. would recommend the Lasagne, fish and chips & pie. with the roast although still tasty i would like to see more roast potatoes and fresh veg for the money.
look forward to more good things from the new management- good luck
p. b.
Good old fashioned pub. Good pub grub varied menu and small plate offers .Change of Management very friendly.Plenty of parking and a good welcome. Missed a good blazing open wood fire but promised will be going in future as the weather's getting colder. Going to use as regular meeting lunch stop with friends.
R.
Great live music, friendly atmosphere, I've only eaten there a couple of times, and on both occasions it was very nice!
I. P.
Nice pub on the edge of the New Forest. Good selection of beer and friendly staff.
D. W.
Food very good. Staff all friendly and helpful. Service was quick. The only drawback was the large screen TV on in the main bar. This was extremely loud and therefore spoilt the visit slightly. If we ate there again we would definitely eat in the dining room.
P. “. H.
We had lunch there for the first time and we loved it. The food was amazing and you could tell it was just cooked, and you certainly get your monies worth. We highly recommend the Forest Burger! The staff were very welcoming, even had a chat with the landlord about the place. We will definitely be going back soon.
J. H.
Had a great evening at the open mic night hosted by Liam White, bar staff were fantastic and made us feel very welcome and always around if you were ready to order drinks food etc. Blankets made available due to still being in partial lockdown. Well done to Ian and Joanne who run this friendly little pub in Ashurst..
Y. L.
The little one likes everything here. My friend also loves the place because the baby changing room is inside the lady’s restroom, so 6 stars from him. 😂
M. T.
Great food and everyone really friendly. Amazing that our young waiter came running out after us as I had left my handbag on the floor by our table!! Will definitely be going back
G. T.
Have visited here with family and friends on different occasions... Never had a bad meal yet... Very friendly staff and nothing is too much trouble. We had an assortment of meals the other night and every meal had the thumbs up from us. The Tempura Prawns with the chilli sauce.. lip smacking good!
D. T.
Best food of the holiday, to be honest probably the best food we've ever had out. Credit to the chief, we really enjoyed our visit here.
M. C.
Your average roadside pub, friendly service and good car park
S. K.
Throughly recommended this gem, fire helped my boots dry, great environment. The lamb leg steak with mustard mash, mushroom sauce and kale get outta here never had meal so satisfying. Wish I lived closer. Hats off to the staff.
C. Q.
Went here for mothers day. A great atmosphere and proper quality pub food. We were made very welcome, they' d even reserved a table in the doggy area and provided treats and lots of fuss. To top it all off, a surprise chocolate was handed to me (the mum) at the end.
I. B.
Very good home made food, generous portions and what is most important, gluten free options too, but please do gf peppercorn sauce, please...
M. B.
Very nice staff and food. Will come again
H. H.
Went here for a Shortstack and Sides gig, has been renovated by new owners. Was impressed by pricing of food and drinks and atmosphere was nice. Members of staff were lovely and very attentive x
C. M.
Me and my husband came yesterday for our wedding anniversary meal. Oh wow! Portions where great and the Yorkshire puddings where out of this world. Extremely friendly staff especially the chef/cook. Apologised for the wait on the Yorkshire puddings but they where 100% worth the wait. We WILL for sure be back again soon.
A. A.
Went there Sunday in a party of four ,we all had Sunday roast but im afraid by tge time it got to us it was cold ,plus they messed up the veg 3 bowls of veg for 4 meals ?? Even that was cold . Sorry I do like the place its cheap and cheerful but I do expect my food to be hot .
T. O.
Called in for the first time on a rainy Sunday for a bite to eat. Welcomed by the bar staff to view the menu and we both enjoyed a lovely Roast with all the trimmings finished off with desert cannot recommend the food and staff more highly a great traditional English pub. See you again very soon!!
P. D.
This little bungalow style pub, on the A35 just before Ashurst is an ideal stop off point for a drink and a meal. Recently purchased by a family who seem to be doing all the right things. Nice beer, very good food, attractive sensible prices. Also a scrupulous adherence to the Covid precautions. An excellent lunch there after a long New Forest walk.
J. P.
New owners**** Cannot believe the improvement. Came for mothers day very busy which was great to see and the food and service was excellent. Serving food now from a Wednesday to Sunday. On a Monday and Tuesday they allow take aways to be delivered and they will supply cutlery etc. Well worth a visit.
H. “. B.
I like this pub. The staff are all very friendly the beer is fairly priced as well. What let's it down is the menu. As it goes the food is nice but just limited I'd also say abit pricey. That being said we visit about once or twice a month and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere.
If you want somewhere to have a pint with friendly locals and a cosy warm atmosphere this is your place.
L. D.
Nice for a drink but for the love of god, don't eat here! We were starving, unfortunately.
K. W.
Excellent. Fantastic food. Lovely staff. Good atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
S. H.
Well this has to be one of the quirkyest pubs we have visited. We ordered pineapple and lemonade drinks but was told we couldn't buy them because of the suger tax and extra vat so plumped for draft lemonade and diet cokes .The landlady then went about making these drinks but had to go into another room within the pub to sort out the ice and for some reason or other swap over the lemonade and diet coke. On the whole the food is very good pub grub with a traditional prawn cocktail ( had to ask for more sauce though) chef came out to see what was in included for the whitebait as well. Overall the service was good however it was a bit on the slow side.
J. J.
Brilliant. Very impressed with the food, service, friendly staff and the prices were reasonable too. Waiting time for our food was minimal. All freshly cooked. Will certainly be going back. Very highly recommended.
L. C.
We stayed in the new forest for a weekend and stopped here for lunch on our way home. Great service and very friendly staff and owners . we had our dog with us and the owner bought him out some scraps of meat in a bowl . its the little things that matter. 👍
K. T.
Much nicer and friendlier than when we came a year or two ago ,we had food and as a family we really enjoyed it ,service was efficient and polite .I opted for lasagne and although there was a good size portion of it I felt it needed a bit more garlic but that's my personal opinion.Well done and keep up the standards you are setting .
M. C.
Amazing pub. Very friendly staff who go that extra mile to make your visit happy. Lovely food. Staff could not do enough for us as my friend and I ate disabled. 3 cheers for the forest inn. xxx
P. P.
Plate was running in ?oil as chips were obviously double fried which did spoil our gammon eggs and chips. Service was excellent and really prompt.
V. V.
Top quality pub with fantastic new owners. Great food and great prices. Lovely environment and always made to feel very welcome.

N. G.
Was a little worried by some of the previous reviews but saw that they had a new chef and was optimistic. Ordered a wild boar burger and scampi, both very nice and went down a treat. Service was quick and friendly. Would go again.

J. B.
Lovely pub. Nice food.Been I new hands since last June apparently.
S. K.
As this pub has been under new management since September 2017, most of these reports are irrelevant.
The Sunday Roast is excellent and they serve a good pint of Ringwood 49er.
C. G.
We just popped in coming back from the coast with our dogs, the welcome is superb, lovely outside sitting area, dog friendly, pint glasses are chilled and staff kind and helpful
Support this place
J. I.
This is a pleasant old fashioned type of pub, with a good old fashioned, but very good quality and well priced pub, we rolled up at 2.50pm on Friday (they stop serving at 3pm) we ordered, our meals came within 10 or 15 minutes or so, my liver & bacon with fried onions mash and peas was really good, lots of liver, unlike some other places we've visited, my wife had cottage pie, both huge portions, the landlady (& cook) told us everything is cooked fresh, she doesn't reheat from frozen, we were very happy with the older style pub.
P. B.
Good food good service and reasonable prices. Nice to have a proper pint of ale
O. M.
Decent looking menu. Food mediocre and not very good value for money. 3 of us ordered similar things and portion sizes were different for coleslaw and chips.
M. C.
Great place to have a cosy drink by the open fire. Good selection of well-kept beers and wines. Staff are very friendly and welcoming.
P. S.
Nice place with Doom Bar at a reasonable price. A small live band were playing and they were great - didn't eat there so couldn't comment on the food.
A. W.
Lovely meal, very friendly people, will definitely go again.
e. B.
Lovely and friendly staff. The food was home cooked and tasty, generous portions too.
M. C.
Cosy little venue with Ringwood Brewery ale on tap. Think there has just been a change of management. Didn't try the food but saw some decent roast dinners on other tables!
J. D.
No word of a lie, best food I've had across the UK. I cannot express how amazing it is!
M. S.
A little disorganised due to change of management but very attentive. Good food for a fair price. Will definitely be paying another visit.

We are always made very welcome. The staff are lovely and go out of their way to provide safe food for my daughter, who has coeliac disease, even cleaning out fryers if need be.They make beautiful chicken fricassee, in a delicious rich sauce and a very tasty smoked bacon carbonara. Many of the meals are available in small or large portions,to suit appetites. There is a good range of drinks, including regularly rotated ales, such as Otter,Doombar and others. We had a Christmas meal here last year, which was superb;they even went out of their way to make an individual gluten free trifle for my daughter,in advance.Recently, we had to wait slightly longer for a meal and they sent complimentary snacks, along with sincere apologies.I live within spitting distance of other posher places to eat out but we always go here because they make lovely food, give a really warm welcome and are so helpful- in fact,we went for lunch today! The fricassee was fabulous,as always!
M. C.
