Reviews of The Guide Dog
C. A.
A Southampton institution. Fantastic cask beer. A real pub interior, convivial conversation with space to chill on your own. Great service. What's not to like?
R. E. (.
The best real ale pub in Southampton by far. Great service and a friendly atmosphere. It's so good I wish I lived within walking distance!
C. D.
Really super clean and really enjoying lovely lovely beer back here. Still friendly and nice :-)
M. C.
Five stars!!! Stunning beer and brilliant cellarmanship!! All the beer was of an exceptional quality! If you want to try real ale, then this is the place to go. Real ale. Real pub. Lovely landlord, who knows his beer!
A. C.
Excellent pub for real ales, very good food, friendly atmosphere.
T. L.
This is a wonderful pub. They have an excellent selection of real ales on tap. Staff are friendly. Table service is good. Well worth a visit if you are in Southampton
D. B.
Excellent range of beers. Not a pub to drive to. Friendly and well organised staff look forward to my next visit
D. H.
Lovely place for a quiet drink or two, quality ales
P. R.
This is a lovely, popular pub, chock full of delightful punters and great service. But, like a few other 'real ale' pubs round here they persist in serving almost entirely Pale ales. No, Ruby's, Amber's, Milds etc it's winter, I don't really want to drink hoppy, citrusy drinks. They all seem to think that this blind obedience to pale ale is satisfactorily offset with Porter. It isn't.
P. M.
Good selection of real ale friendly and welcoming. decor is good old pub.I have been back many times..
D. K.
Proper pub. Good beer, no games/invasive tv/music. Friendly regulars.
M. K.
Another old style pub with a nice atmosphere and a superb range of beers. Highly recommended.
s. m.
Good local beer well priced a bit quieter than it used to be quite friendly no cash payments may put up some off not so many real ales as used to have no larger but the place is still a good local you can pay in cash now pub still ok still no larger though
T.
A great selection of beers etc, but would be nice to have some non alcoholic choices too, theres still plenty of money to be made from these types of drinks and there are some great choices now. Please consider expanding your fridge stock!
H. M.
Lovely homely, welcoming pub. Great ales. Amazing curries on a Wednesday but it is first come first served.
D. H.
Fantastic atmosphere although the back room can get a little noisy if there is a group of enthusiastic people in there. The selection of real ales is very good and the beer is well kept. The landlord is very knowledgeable and obviously takes great pride in his beer keeping.
D. R.
A terrific bar with a great atmosphere. Always ensured of a great welcome. Huge selection of real ales at a great price. On Thursday nights authentic Thai curries..highly recommended. Even though it is a small pub it has a little function room, aptly called the Dog House, and music is a feature on certain nights. Overall a great experience.

This is quite simply the pub Southampton has been missing for 30 years. It's friendly, well run and has the finest beer in the city at reasonable if not outright cheap prices. Walk in the door and you'll remember what pubs used to be like!
J. T.
Best pub in town! A real find. Excellent beers, they even serve thirds if you want to try all of them without falling over. Quirky little backroom too. Love it - will be coming here again.
J. “. W.
Really good choice of real ales nice friendly pub , service good
R. M.
The Guide Dog is the best pub in Southampton. The beers are flawless and the staff are lovely esp brilliant landlord Gary. It is the kind of local that you can wander into when you are on your own and always find someone interesting to talk to. It hosts music clubs in a little back room. And for smokers, it hss good covered outside seating. The pub does Thai Curry on Thurs nights - you have to book....
S. S.
Really sweet little pub, they specialise in the Ales and I loved all of them. If you ask the lovely staff they will let you have a taste test before commiting to your pint of choice. Would definitely recommend here for a few drinks with your mates to chill out and have a natter. Would definitely go again!
T. D.
Lovely pub, beer and atmosphere! I enjoyed my visit.
S. B.
Visited this pub for the first time this evening for their Thai curry night. An excellent meal, good value, with friendly staff and a lovely cozy venue. The landlord seems very supportive of the local music scene and they had a good selection of ales at cheaper prices than any of our usual haunts. We'll definitely be back.
H. H.
Always have a dark beer on, either porters or stouts. Well kept and reasonably priced.
T. Y.
A nice quite pub filled with friendly people. The owners are very friendly and can often be found working at the pub.
Thai curry is amazing and spicy (mild versions are available) this is served every Thursday.
N. S.
Doesn't every one know about this place yet :)
It's a proper pub that is no nonsense but just sells a great range of great beers, if you like ale and you like a good choice then this is the place for you.
HOWEVER, i've noticed more and more kids about the place and I mean
3-4 year olds with foreign parents, hope it's not going to spoil the place for us drinkers !!
G. C.
Excellent selection of well conditioned beers, knowledgeable and attentive staff. Thursday is Thai night so book a table or get there early you won't be disappointed. Thanks Gary and the team.
J. W.
Found The Guide Dog via the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for a free late afternoon/early evening during a conference this month. It provided everything I was hoping for: quiet conviviality, beautifully-kept local ales and an owner both welcoming and knowledgeable. This place is a labour of love: the fruit of dedication, inspiration, and hard work. Thoroughly enjoyed my three hours there, and would recommend the Guide Dog to anyone.
m. a.
Lovely authentic pub a little bit hidden away but worth the effort. Good choice of beer but strangely
No IPA on tap. I will be returning next time I am in Southampton
T. D.
What a pub. Offerings of 11 fresh and fine local cask ales, acoustic music sessions and a mighty friendly traditional 'pub' setting. Once you've been it'll be your favourite local, no question!
R. H.
This is a little gem of a find! Brilliant atmosphere -very welcoming to humans as well as dogs! It is a real Ale pub and the one I had was wonderful. Give it a go and see for yourself :-)
S. P.
Single room back street pub. This place is all about the beer range. Seven to nine casks. It's not a place to bring the family or the kids or your wife or girlfriend. It's a place to come to sample a few beers, and perhaps have a chat with fellow men. It's friendly enough and quite harmless, but if you're not interesting in ticking beers, then it's unlikely to be the pub for you.
D. M.
Always great beer in this gem. Try it out Thursday evening and enjoy some of June's excellent Thai cooking. Children are welcome to eat as well.
K. R.
Good old fashioned pub selling real ale doorstep sarnies a selection of snacks crisps nuts ect, meat draw Friday night a no frills place clean and tidy. Great for the old fashioned beer drinker
N. P.
A small corner pub slightly Off the Beaten Track. Good choice of real ales. Two rooms pub ,slightly smaller room with funky decor. Too small outside areas. Friendly staff and friendly local pub......
N. L.
Has to be a near perfect pub if you want a traditional pub and a wide choice of ales all in excellent condition. Sorry, no loud music, TVs or fruit machines, just people chatting.
Heaven.
R. G.
Very Covid safe. Good selection of ales and friendly staff. Good traditional local pub. Reccomend if you are in the area.
S. D.
Thursday nights has become Thai Curry night in our house now we have discovered The Guide Dog. They do the best Thai curry in Southampton and its a shame it’s only a Thursday night. The staff are super friendly and welcoming and I love the fact the curry is available to take away as well as eat in as it means that if I’m not feeling too well or the pub is busy we can still have our favourite Thai curry.
T. P.
Great little pub with a nice atmosphere and good ale selection.
D. J.
The Dog. Beautifully independent.
Try finding a bad pint - you won't. They know exactly what they are doing here.
Expect good beer, good company if you want it and relax... except on a match day! Then go for beer and football atmosphere.
G. C.
Excellently kept real ales. The pub is getting a bit 'tired' and in need of a redecoration - and new carpet (or different floor covering). But the beer is kept very well. Nuff said my
D. T.
Proper pub no music good very reasonable prices called in before Saints game with Newcastle place was packed but rapid service because they had plenty of staff on.
T. W.
A nice comfortable pub with no airs or graces. A good selection of good ales. A place to go for real ale drinkers.

M. B.
Lovely fresh beer in a great little pub.
G. S.
I pop in occasionally when I'm marooned at shamrock quay. This is a cracking boozer serving well kept ales. It has a very convivial atmosphere. I wish I was more local.
D. J.
The beer and service are excellent
Well worth a visit when it's quiet in weekday afternoons and after matches at St Mary's. Do not bring a friend after the football, they will be lucky to find a place to stand.
G. S.
