Reviews of The Shoe Inn
S. P.
Beautiful pub in the middle of the countryside, next to a river. We sat outside and had lunch, the menu was full of delicious sounding food. We had light lunches but there were also doorstop sandwiches and main meals too. Plenty for vegetarians, friendly and helpful crew behind the bar. Would definitely return!
S. K.
Very nice pub. We didn't have a reservation and arrived at busy lunch time but they were still able to squeeze us in. We had a crispy chicken burger. It was very tasty especially the chicken (chicken coating could have been a bit less crispy). They also gave us their freshly baked bread with olive oil before the main meal whilst we waited. Worth visiting if you are passing by and want something nice to eat.

It's not very often I give 5 stars but I have to say, credit where credits due. Fast, friendly and efficient service right from the moment we sat down.
I have been known to set my stopwatch at the point where all orders were placed to see how long it takes for our order to arrive Recently, in another restaurant, we had to wait ages for our food to arrive.
Not so at the Shoe. Even though they were very busy our food arrived amazingly quickly.
And, in addition to that, the food quality was excellent.
I must compliment the 'Shoe', I take my hat off to you. Well done.

Our first visit to the very popular Shoe Inn, it clearly deserves its excellent reputation. People were lining up ready for 6pm opening with the garden proving very popular with its charming chalk stream and pretty outlook over countryside.
Friendly and efficient staff, excellent food and a good choice of beer and wine. My only suggestion would be more vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.
The food was of excellent quality, we will definitely be returning.
K. F.
beautiful location with garden next to river. But said it was NOT possible to have cake or sandwich with coffee at 11:00am? Did buy bread however - made my own sarnie.
E. N.
This is a pub to keep coming back to. For Sunday lunch, a midweek meal in the evening and all year round, the Shoe Inn always delivers - friendly service, good atmosphere and above all tasty food and beer. Love this pub!
R. W.
We loved it here!!! Beautiful pub and a great garden at a little river. Food also amazing and friendly stuff.
C. E.
Great location ambiance and hard to choose as everything on the menu looks delicious. Loved it
P. R.
Lovely food with a lovely atmosphere just the roast potatoes need some work to make it perfect

My memories of The Shoe Inn are all amazing! It is still the same now, I hadn’t been since before covid.
Decide to come again a couple of days ago. Everything is still amazing. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Stopped off on our walk of the South Downs Way to find a fine pub in a picturesque village. Good choice of ales and the two sampled were well conditioned and served by friendly staff. Good choice on the menu and all enjoyed the food. Mix of inside and semi outside dining. Quite busy. Definitely worth another visit.
Update: revisited very busy at lunch so better to book ahead.
G. B.
Thank you all for a fabulous fathers day. You all made it very memorable. Food all so yummy. Couldn't stop eating. Staff all happy and efficient and a wonderful atmosphere. It made a very special fathers day extra special. It was the first time in 3 years that we had all got together. Personally the pie was the best ever thoroughly recommend. X

Have popped in for a drink on a couple of occasions and it's always been lovely. Today I went for food and it was fantastic! The pork belly may have been the best I've ever had and the portion sizes were decent. Lovely staff, just a bit chilly on the veranda but I did spot blankets as we were leaving.

One of my favourite pubs. Our recent company Christmas lunch was excellent. Everyone really enjoyed their food. The staff were all so friendly and the service couldn’t have been better.. I am looking forward to lunch in the spring in their lovely garden by the river.
N. B.
Amazing food as always, please book your table any time you are wishing to visit as this place is extremely busy & popular (as it should be!).
Service a little lacking in places this time - a lot of new very young staff they were all lovely just not quite on top of everything just yet! But they will get there in no time I am sure and after a year of being off/closed we can all expect this and still thoroughly enjoy a beautiful meal and gorge surroundings.
(Pictured is the King Prawn Taco & White Choc & Raspberry Cheesecake!)

Oh, my, days! We had 2 courses each and were completely stuffed!. Asian crispy pork starter: delicious. Fish and triple cooked chips: a joy. Others had the lamb shoulder and garlic mash and were not disappointed: tender lamb and big helping of mash with fresh vegetables. Oh, nearly forgot, the bread made on the premises is lush, and you can buy it too to take home. You have to book to get a table at this busy, popular restaurant. Service was good considering the busyle of the place, but always ready and willing to help. The atmosphere is what makes this venue. Parking is available but be aware the the popularity will make the tiny village busy! We already want to go back and can't wait.
D. H.
Absolutely brilliant. Food was lovely. Couldn’t fault it at all. Will definitely go back. My husband said the beer actually tasted like proper beer. Unfortunately parking is a minimum
J. N.
Recently visited the Shoe while staying in the area and walking the South Downs Way. The team were simply amazing. So accommodating, even while yet super busy. Great meals, great staff, great vibe. Highly recommend.
J. H.
Went here for lunch with my Dad a week ago. Its not somewhere I get to as often as I'd like as its a bit far out for me. That said, when I do come here I am never disappointed, with either the sandwiches or a full meal. Last week here with my dad we both had the belly of pork which, as usual was delicious, followed by crumble and washed down with a lovely glass of wine. The location, the atmosphere and the staff are all lovely and in the summer I recommend booking a table outside to enjoy the river. Highly recommended.
S. H.
Had lunch here last week and it was great, even though we were at the tail end of the lunch service. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and good food (the pawn taco was fantastic!). They’ve done a great job with enclosing the porch to increase their indoor seating whilst still having lots of space around each table. Will definitely be back.
H. H.
Popped in on the of chance and we were lucky to get a table. Very busy for a Tuesday lunchtime. I would definitely recommend booking. We had a sausage sandwich which was lovely. The pub is dog friendly and my dog was greeted by the staff enthusiasticly. Great atmosphere and would definitely recommend it
A. C.
Fantastic location and we had a table in the large garden right next to the river/babbling brook. Peaceful green and calming. Food was excellent. Starters were tasty and for mains, I had a huge, crispy battered haddock and chips and my BF had the crispy belly pork and dauphinois potato. All dishes were delicious. Service was very attentive despite them being very busy. Lovely way to spend a bank holiday evening dinner. Lots of parking available - highly recommend this pub.

I'm very lucky that The Shoe is right on my doorstep, but it's definitely not just a local pub for local people (but it's telling that a lot of locals eat and drink here)! Great food, amazing bakery, and a gorgeous beer garden on the banks of the burbling River Meon. Annabel & Patrick and their team always go above and beyond, so it's highly recommended by me. And I'm fussy!
S. M.
One of our favourite dog friendly pubs in the country rain or shine. When it’s winter it’s cosy and in the summer you have the stream to sit by with a choice of dappled light from the shade of the trees or sun with an umbrella table. Food is always delicious and the staff are always friendly! And I also like to take a loaf of their home baked bread with me when I leave. Yes, they have an on-site bakery too! It’s a must for a visit!
K.
The pub garden is an amazing place to relax right next to the river surrounded by trees and views over the South downs meadows. Food was great too. Would recommend the beef and mushroom pie (1st photo) and also the lamp shank (3rd photo).
J. B.
Part of my personal golden triangle of top pub locations. Great food whether inside or sat by the river. A great circular walk with spectacular views of about 90-105 minutes at a comfortable pace is nearby. Do it before your lunch and then wash down with a pint of Wadworths 6X ... unbeatable x
L. K.
The Shoe is located in the pretty hamlet of Exton I'd advise booking in advance as it gets very busy and although they have a largish car park it does fill up and parking on the road is limited so you may have to park and walk back to the pub. The food is good and service is friendly it's definitely worth a visit.
C. E.
Friendly staff and went out of their way to sell me a bag of their coffee beans which I highly recommend, even though they were running low. The pub is really clean and cosy, We also visited in the summer and sat in the garden next to the river (Meon) with a meal which I would also highly recommended. Worth a visit thankyou.
m. z.
Amazing place... What a find!
Were on a day out and stumbled across this pretty little pub in the South Downs NP. Had lunch in the garden by the little river.
Great service, food is amazing and if you are a fan of Dessert go for the "Cafe Gourmand" - best of the best!
Will say, no matter what you choose it is all 5* plus at this place
Covid safe! Easy track and trace registration!
L. R.
Took my mum here for Mother’s Day and I am so pleased I did, it was absolutely faultless. We opted for the vegetarian roast and it was hands down the best roast dinner I’ve had. The presentation was fantastic and it tasted phenomenal. The staff were so friendly and attentive, for such a busy day, they had everything under control. I would highly recommend and cannot wait to come again!
S. N.
Totally love this pub , didn't eat in today but I have in the past and the food was amazing. I had Pork Belly and it just melted in my mouth. Recommend this pub 100%
D. W.
Great country pub, perfect after a winter walk
I. M.
Excellent pub with a great beer garden at the front.
A. B.
Charming lunch destination. Beautiful location and 9/10 food. Staff are excellent. Can't recommend a better place to stop while cycling through Exton.

Amazing food as always, please book your table any time you are wishing to visit as this place is extremely busy & popular (as it should be!).
Service a little lacking in places this time - a lot of new very young staff …
C. S.
All the pub staples, consistently well done, along with some slightly unusual dishes done to perfection. The cauliflower popcorn is probably our favourite
T. N.
We had a lovely 3 course meal by the river. Staff super helpful and friendly and food was delicious. Best meal out for ages! Highly recommend eating here.
M. P.
Had a beef red wine and mushroom pie with mustard mash and roast veg and the pudding below and yes it did taste as good as it looks the pie was full of flavour and plenty of beef if you are looking for amazing pub food look no further
L. B.
Really good quality food, with a pub garden next to the river
P. B.
Super setting, really nice food, able to sit inside or in the garden. Really busy despite being on the expensive side of things, I suppose quality comes at a price 😅
S. G.
Second visit to the Shoe for a birthday meal and it never disappoints. Great food in lovely surroundings. Until next time.
B. B.
Great food and lovely surroundings. Very attentive staff.

L. S.
Had one of there sandwiches total brilliant bacon and brie the bread was total amazing they bake it in the pub great food thanks to the staff great job
M. J.
First time eating at the Shoe. All ten of us loved the food, brilliant staff. Definitely going back, thanks.
B. C.
Lovely pub by the river. Very nice for a pint and a bite to eat after completing SDW - Winchester to Exton.
J. A.
Lovely setting, great food and pleasant staff. Will be going back soon.
M. F.
Amazing food & service in a beautiful location. Would be great to see more than 1 vegan option for each course BUT those dishes were so delicious - in particular the cauliflower starter.
Can’t wait to see what else the chef can create!
Also great to get a few bits from The Pantry here, gorgeous fresh bread, rapeseed oil, etc.
Glad to have discovered this place as a convenient halfway point for my friends and I.
H. B.
Lovely pub situated by the river!! Food looked amazing. Ladies loo's had, deodorant, hand cream, hairspray and other products for you to freshen up with for free. Nice touch! Great coffee too.
D. W.
Great country pub, perfect after a winter walk
M. R.
Absolutely outstanding food, lovely location, and exemplary COVID precautions observed. Could not recommended more.
C. M.
As a hospitality professional with experience over 30 years on 4 continents i can honestly say its the best three course meal for quality, taste, value and originality that i can remember having for a long time..
My elderly and often awkward father had exactly the same opinion.
We even bought a loaf which they make fresh each day for sale, home with us..
6 stars not 5!
H. N.
Pretty good! Steak pie more of a veggie pie 🤷 crumble was delicious and drinks very reasonably priced. Overall good but not fab!
J. C.
Excellent atmosphere. Excellent food. Portions are generous. The sandwiches are using their bread and very thick.
J. S.
Nice pub very good food. Garden by the river .but can get very busy and parking may require a walk if you wish to have a table in side book in advance. Meal orders may take longer when busy as reservations take priority.
K. M.
Stopped here for lunch on a lovely walk. The garden is really nice, by the river. I had the Korean pork starter and it was amazing. The best food out in a long time. My friend had the prawn sandwich and it truly was a doorstep as described with plenty of filling.
A. L.
Quick walk and back to the Shoe for lunch. Wouldn't usually choose vegan, but the Buddha Bowl was really good.
K.
All I can say is wow.
The Sunday roasts are fantastic, I have tried both the beef and the pork but wow the pork was up there with one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The fresh bread was just dreamy!
Friendly staff and amazing environment, what’s nice is they are so welcoming to small children as I know some places are not. Can’t wait to come back! Thank you
S.
Highly recommended!!! Very delicious and authentic food. Especially Sunday roast, black pudding and selection of desserts. I love this place!
T. L.
beautiful place. lovely setting and nice food.
J. N.
We honestly had a lovely evening Saturday night when visiting my sister & family near Exton. The pub had a relaxed ambience and we had a full 2 hours or so there enjoying a delicious meal and wine. There was a good choice of meals (good for veggie or carnivore), and none of us could fault our main courses. The puds were equally as good, and our 5 year old niece had a good choice too from the kids menu. Nothing was rushed but you didn't feel like you were waiting ages either. Highly recommended for the food, atmosphere and the staff. Thanks for a great evening!
T. G. B.
Absolutely fantastic pub! Great seasonal menu and very well cooked food! Service is friendly and efficient. They have accommodated for our son since he was born! Slow cooked pork belly is always delicate and falls apart with amazing dauphinois potatoes! Seafood to start is fresh and simple! You can’t beat a drive out to this pub and don’t forget to buy a loaf of their homemade bread and bag coffee beans to take home!!
W. T.
Great pub for a pint. Didn't eat but had loads of food envy as the dishes being served looked amazing
D. W.
Fabulous food quick and efficient service wonderful in the garden this evening. Thank you
I. M.
Excellent pub with a great beer garden at the front.
G. I.

L. W.
Amazing roast and dessert. Attentive service even though very busy on mothers day. Thank you
b. c.
The food is amazing, 100% definitely worth a visit!!!
J. C.
Simply amazing. Lovely location and the buttermilk fried halloumi taco is a game changer! Would go back again and again!
J. A.
Quite limited vegan options. The cauliflower starter was tasty but the vegan burger was average.
K. M.
Lovely evening.
Staff and food both really good. Can't wait to enjoy the pub garden in the sun 😊
F. H.
Lovely gardens and polite staff ,went to buy some fresh bread but sold out 😔
T. G.
Absolutely glorious. Service that went above and beyond, exquisite food and a wonderful setting. We will be back.
D. W.
From the moment we walked in we were made to feel so welcome. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was top notch. I had the lamb which was excellent
Puddings were amazing too. We will be back soon
H. M.
Seitan medallions (vegan) with perfect vine tomatoes, asparagus and new potatoes. My partner had the falafel with guac and hummus. Some of the best vegan dishes we've had!
N. D.
Beautiful location (we went after a walk up Old Winchester Hill). Warm atmosphere, with a welcoming open fire. Food really good, including excellent doorstep sandwiches and a burger to beat all burgers.
D. R.
Popped in for 1 drink, ended up having 4 and a taco starter which was really good. The manager who I think is called Luke, went above and beyond and remembered us from the sister pub which was a lovely touch. Other 2 team members also looked after us well. Wish it had more space! Would recommend to anyone 100% x
G. B.
4 of us for lunch with the dogs. 4 burgers easy order - Good, friendly, fast efficient service. Liked it.
G. C.
Scrumptious lunchtime sandwiches lovely fresh homemade bread.
S. S.
Amazing services, fresh bread which is made everyday, and the coffee is very nice, must try. I prefer fresh potates than chips, but anyway, I enjoyed the meal so much.
C. F.
Sunday lunch, special family occasion. You need to book! Good value, great service, tasty food. Lost star for veg in a jar! No one liked that idea. Most especially everything contaminated with cauliflower cheese.
B. D.
Quality of food was 10/10 as was the service. Portions were spot on too and I'm a big eater. Prices were surprisingly reasonable given the aforementioned quality and the location. Will certainly be returning. Cant recommend highly enough.
C. T.
Fancies itself as a gastro pub but the haddock and chips I had was merely acceptable. The batter was MUCH too heavy. The menu is interesting and the service is pretty good. Lovely setting next to a river
E. L.
A great Sunday lunch with the family. My only minor gripe was that it could have been a tad hotter but other than that I can highly recommend this popular pub
J. P.
Had a fantastic birthday meal here in March. The food was outstanding. 10/10
S. J.
Really quaint little pub. Lovely, friendly staff - quick and efficient service.
Food was super tasty and staff very helpful with food intolerances. The menu has so many options for gluten and dairy free.
Beautiful location and interesting decor.
Will definitely visit again.
A. C.
Lovely staff and good service. Excellent baguettes and gorgeous in the sun sitting by the river.
M. D.
Great food, great beer, beautiful location. Say no more
M. C.
What's not to love , friendly staff , great food , great service , great price just go and enjoy it yourself
R. J.
Excellent food. Good choice. We all had something different and all enjoyed it. Busy as is to be expected, even on a Monday lunchtime, but service was good. Lovely to sit in the garden near the stream. Could not get advance table booking system to work. I probably needed to do in further in advance than the day before.
K. S.
Great pub lovely location great food and service
S. M.
Always love to visit here! Set in a very beautiful part of the countryside with a stream running through the beer garden. The food and service is always great with helpful friendly staff. Reasonably priced goes towards a nice day afternoon or evening visit 👍🙏😃
K. L.
Lovely location. Roast dinner amazing and the sticky toffee pudding to die for!! Staff did well as were very busy following reopening in gardens. Had to wait a little longer than usual for service but absolutely expected this and did not distract from lovely experience. Well done guys 👍🏻
E. B.
The Shoe is my happy place. Love it for a yummy meal or relaxed drink by the river. Beautiful setting. Great staff, yummy home made bread, very Tasty food. Lovely covered veranda done for C19 era giving the indoor/outdoor feel .
K. T.
Wonderful Pub in brilliant village setting , bake bread for sale as extra.
R. A.
Stopped here for lunch while cycling King Alfred's Way and sat in the pub garden by the river. Had the Buddah Bowl, which was was tasty but had honey on the parsnips, so vegans be aware. Service was good. Was pleased they had soya milk for coffees, as it was much needed.
B. T.
A beer garden by a river in a perfect setting. Definitely visit
A. R.
Excellent food, friendly staff and great location. We were blown away by how good the food was.
S. T.

S.
Highly recommended. A Lovely pub, with a beer garden, in beautiful countryside. The food is really excellent - probably the best chips I've ever tasted! There is a great choice of drinks and there are games that you can borrow. There's even a bakery with very nice looking bread.
M. C.
Arrived on a gloriously sunny afternoon, and was really surprised at the beauty of the area.had fish and chips at the shoe, and nd quite honestly they were excellent. Would visit again.loved it .staff really friendly too
P. A.
On our cycle ride yesterday we arrived at The Shoe Inn just after their service had closed but the staff were more than happy to serve us refreshing pots of tea. Lovely, welcoming and friendly service. Thank you.
c. g.
Very good lunch with my nephew. Dog friendly which is always a bonus.
H. T.
This is our third visit here and it never disappoints. The bread is the best I’ve tried, coffee best we’ve had since we left London and the rest of the food is full of flavour, big portions, great options on the menu and the service is brilliant, wish we lived closer!
A. P.
Friendly, helpful staff, beautiful setting and delicious food. Thank you
L. K.
Nice food, great Riverside seating.
H. C.
Nice outdoor space. Could have done with a small selection of cakes to go with our drinks
s. S. R.
Wonderful as always. Pork loin was superb as was the sundae . Great staff very friendly and welcoming
J. C.
Lovely setting and great garden, very accommodating even during covid. Will be returning to try the food that looked amazing as it was taken to other tables around us. Going by the sweet potato fries we had as a snack it will be fantastic
M. B.
Lovely ambience in the garden, great attentive staff, we just had a lovely couple of hours there this afternoon. We haven't been out that often since restrictions lifted but felt very safe and the sun was a bonus. Well done the Manager and staff. 😀
M. H.
Beautiful riverside garden with plenty of tables, well spaced out. Wish I'd taken photos, will next time. The gardens were packed out with diners but did not feel hemmed in at all.
My first time there & apart from the fact the food was excellent, I was amazed, considering the number of people there, with the superb level of service. I went into the bar just before leaving to tell the manager how much I had enjoyed myself.
R. R.
peng food, location amazing next to a cute river, friendly service, bit spenny but goood
C. R.
Due to having to dine outside because of government guidelines, I must say it was a pleasure. The staff are super kind and helpful. The food was absolutely lovely and we had ok weather the day we went, sitting by the river was just lovely and tranquil. I would recommend this hidden gem and will be coming again.
J. C.
Very nice lunch so much so we went back for dinner.. Only down side the meal seemed rather rushed. Would have liked more time between courses. Everything else was great..
L. R.
Love this place, from the chalk stream in the garden to the ever changing menu, the friendly staff, to the Wadsworth ale, it’s all awesome. Our 5 year old son won “star of the week” at school and “The Shoe” gave us a free mixed seed and black treacle loaf of bread…. Our son held it in the car all the way home . Very friendly. 5 stars.
G. Z.
Excellent food, great view
E. T.
Lovely food and location.
W. A.
Lovely food, lovely staff and lovely setting
N.
Lovely little country pub. Even though we live 30 mins away we visit every few months on average during the year and for special occasions such as birthdays/anniversary’s. The food is always superb and they have a good choice of drink too. It’s only small so booking a table is a must. Our favourite place to eat by far.
P. L.
Went for lunch today and chose the beef and mushroom in red wine Pie. Two words: absolutely delicious !! Served with mustard mash and roasted veg, all beautifully presented.
H. H.
Delightful pub by river. When they say doorstop sandwiches, they really mean it! Gorgeous bread too. I had whitebait with homemade alioli. Yum!
g. l.
Lovely meal, unrushed,
Only down side dificalt parking . Definitely come again.
S. A.
This pub does outstanding food. The pork belly dish for myself and my wife is our favourite. The bread they make is also delicious!!!
C. O.
Good service, overpriced (a bit) foods better than average but gone down hill a bit in the last few years.
A. W.
Pretty good lunch. Another couple of slices of beef would have been great. Cheese and biscuits really good but spoilt by the curry jam. Good beer and lovely staff. Shame people have dogs on the table then feed them under the table. Dogs OK at bar but please not in restaurant. You need to book as this place is so popular, parking tight.
S. C.
Great food, great service, lovely ambiance.
r. a.
Excellent menu. Wonderfulness breads made on site and sold to public too. Limited parking. Make sure you book in advance, as it has limited parking, but well worth it. Well priced. If you enjoy walking, worth a walk up to old Winchester hill and back (about 6 miles round trip.)
E. F.
Beautiful location and good food and beer
V. T.
Always accomodating and great food, sit by the river on a hot day or enjoy a winter warmer catching up with friends close to Christmas this pub has been a favourite of mine for many years and I have never been disappointed
M. K.
Loves this place. A lovely pub in a delighful little village. I had a roast dinner, which was everything you would expect and more. The portion was generous and the meat very tasty. I was very impressed with the selection of ice cream and sorbets also. Service was good throughout. The only slight pain was parking, but a food place is bound to be popular.
H. B.
Went there for our anniversary, was delicious food. Great quality and great presentation
D.
Absolutely outstanding meal the staff was very friendly and the food was amazing Gordon Ramsays taste buds would be having a party. Would hoghly recommend everyone to visit and will be making regular visits again myself
M. T.
What a lovely place, people and food. It's so nice to get home cooked meal beautifully presented. I definitely will be back. Thank you.
P. D.
Although it is over 30 miles from where we live we have visited the Shoe Inn several times over the years and it never disappoints. We love the interesting menu, the brilliantly cooked food and the warm and friendly atmosphere. Well worth the trip.
O. S.
Booked for lunch for an anniversary meal.Food was excellent.Staff extremely helpful and polite.Covid restrictions were excellently executed with no problems at all.
We have been several times before and will always be our No1 pub when family come to visit.
Thanks very much to all staff.
C. D.
Fantastic Food, The absolute Best Slow Roast Belly Pork We've ever had Good real ale, Very Friendly Staff, Good old fashioned pub, 5 Star plus Highly Recommended 100%
K. H.
Waited 45 mins for food. Very busy and food excellent. Cold breeze sat by river. After 2.30pm you can sit where you wish outside to eat but its cold by the waterside . Parking is a nightmare though. 25.4.21

Popped in on the way back to Southampton after visiting 'Lavender fields' at Alton. Staff very very welcoming and super friendly, love the fact they make their own bread and have a beautiful display for anyone that wishes to purchase a loaf, jars of chutney and dressings. Ordered the fish and chips, delicious! The garden is so pretty with a river running through it! Hope to visit again soon. Highly recommended for sure.
D. W.
Perfect all round. Great food , friendly welcome. Log fire. The lamb was amazing

Lovely really great quality food, great atmosphere and a really good price, definitely going back
S. J.
Wonderful, very local place. Good and beer - top class
B. G.
What a great pub! I discovered the Shoe Inn a few weeks ago while walking the dog and stopped off there for a quick pint. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and pub itself is clean and laid out well. What really caught my attention was the the smell of the food being served..... I had to book a table for Sunday lunch immediately! When we went back for Sunday lunch we had the same great, friendly service and a really lovely meal. Two roast dinners, One battered Haddock and chips and Zero complaints from us. Everything was tasty and cooked well, dishes made fresh on the premises and I could sense the pride the manager took in the menu. They were able to cater for my friend who is a nightmare for restaurants due to her various allergies but she had a great time and loved her meal as did we all. Desserts were yummy, a good selection of homemade ice creams amongst other delights. It is a dog friendly pub too and I had no problem bringing my (rather large) dog with me to lunch as well. There is outside seating and a small garden area for when the weather is better.
I will be back again (soon) and have no hesitations in recommending it to anyone else!

Stunning area of natural beauty. The pub itself is friendly and welcoming with great service. Food was top quality (recommend the black pudding starter!). There's also a cracking little beer garden by the river. If you're contemplating a visit... Do it!
L. H.
First visit in years. Friendly, clean and good service with a steady flow of customers through the lunch time period. The food was lovely with a good choice on the menu, however would have liked to see some pasta and perhaps a Caesar salad. But that’s just me. The desserts were amazing. Donuts are my next choice but the the brownie still topped my list. If I can have one fault, it was the coffee which was far too strong. We did buy a loaf of their own baked bread before we left as it’s really good! Don’t forget that if you visit 👍
D. H.
Delicious evening meal in pub garden next to the clear, fast flowing Meon. Family of moorhens on the opposite bank. Quick service in spite of being quite a busy time.
L. C.
This place is such a treat. I go there at least two or three times a year, either with a group of friends, my husband or a girlfriend, and it's always fantastic. Tasty food which is a cut above your average pub, really individual service, lovely ambience, beautiful building.
R. P.
Great country pub with fantastic food and a good selection of well kept beers. The parking can be tricky when really busy but the car park around the back helps with this. Beer garden is of decent size and next to a stream which makes for a very pleasant experience in the good weather.
A. H.
Lovely pub tucked away in the small village of Exon. Good food, service and beer. Very popular, so booking is advised.
L. R.
Good food. Beautiful garden with an idyllic stream in the background. It was the check point to our DofE group.Just did not like the way one of the waiters treated them for sitting in one of the tables to rest whilst they waited for us for the next set of instructions.
M. D.
First class pub with a great menu. My partner loves their real ales and we both enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Dog friendly and with lovely garden beside the river. Well worth a visit.
J. M.
Fit 8 of us in on short notice on a busy very sunny Easter Saturday. Very accommodating, and the food was outstanding. Lovely garden to sit in and for the kids to watch a river, homemade bread for sale, good beers... What's not to rave about?
S. G.
Love place to eat - the food we ate was excellent.
Will definitely visit again!
J. B.
Excellent menu and a great place for a drink on a warm, sunny afternoon in the lovely riverside beer garden - when it's not too busy (rare). A bit of a victim of it's own success...
Apart from the popularity, the only minus point is it's proximity to the A32, out of sight, but definitely within earshot.
A. A.
Good food excellent atmosphere
M. S.
Lovely pub with a garden next to the River Meon, good selection of bar food and a great main menu. Tends to get busy on sunny days so book ahead, ice cream shack in the garden on hot days is a welcome surprise.
H.
A good place to start, and more importantly, finish a walk to Old Winchester Hill. At weekends it's important to book a table. Do bring a dog, but leave muddy boots outside! As ever, we were served a lovely meal by the enthusiastic and helpful staff. You won't go hungry here, and if you just need refreshments there is a good selection of beers, and other drinks which I have never tried.
Well worth a look, but you may have to park elsewhere and walk in
R. S.
Good value meals, freshly made bread is gorgeous. Staff are very friendly and helpful!
A. K.
Great bar, cozy with fresh bread baked on the premises
J. M.
Dined in the garden by the river. Lovely food, great service. No bookings being taken for the garden at the moment, first come basis.
E. F.
Great food, reasonable price, lovely staff
R. A.
Excellent selection of on premises baked breads. We love the venue, as a stop for lunch during a walk in the South Downs. Good quality sandwiches. Book well In advance. It's a very popular spot. Right on the bank of the Meon River.
Today we had sandwiches bacon brie and cranberry- I thought excellent loved the dressing on the salad leaves. Crayfish and avocado could have had more avocado, but loaded with crayfish.
A. M.
Lovely pub for food and drinks, friendly service & great beer garden by a small stream...
A. W.
Went in the summer and sat in the garden overlooking a lovely stream. Plenty of birds and some ducks to watch and very tranquil. Pub itself is relatively small and is usually busy but looks quaint and is part of 'village life'. Food served here is good too.
l.
Wonderful garden. Vegan options on menu. I had a falafel burger that was absolutely delicious. Staff were helpful. It was a lovely evening, after a long days cycle. It's right next to South Downs Way, so great place to stop.
A. M.
Well worth the drive out there. The pub itself is beautiful, the service was friendly and efficient, and the food was fantastic. I had the scallops to start and the lamb shank for main course, and would recommend both.
They bake their own bread on the premises, so the first thing that greets you as you walk through the door is the delicious aroma of warm, fresh bread. You get a free sample of fresh bread while you're deciding what to order, and it was so good that we bought some to take home.
It was good value too - three courses and drinks for two people (plus a loaf of cinnamon and raisin bread) came to just over £76. Would definitely go again.
D. v. N.
One of the best Pubs I have ever visited, an ample choice of beer and wine and food that reminds me of home, but then my Wife is an excellent cook.
In summer or even on a sunny winters day, sitting in the garden near the stream, sipping your favourite tipple, time seems sometimes to stand still until I'm loudly reminded that it's my round. Cheers!
H. V.
6/5 << incredible place! I took my Mum there for her birthday lunch today & I cannot fault the experience. Stunning food, fantastic service, beautiful scenery! I'll be talking about it for weeks and recommending to all! Cannot wait to come back! ♥️
P. M.
Lovely place and food was excellent. Staff very good and friendly. Will go back.
A. C.
Very nice with lovely staff. Food was very yummy
J. M.
I'd like to say that it's awful so that I can keep this little gem to myself!!!
However, in truth it has to be one of the nicest pubs in one of the best locations that I've ever had the pleasure of eating at. We now go as often as we can, it's about an hour away from us but well worth the drive. The food is outstanding and no, it's not my pub!
P.
This pub is picturesque we stopped for a drink unfortunately they weren't serving food but we will def return and eat
Shame they dont do food all day or at least start at 5pm instead of 6pm
L. G.
Must book and can be super busy for lunch. Lovely pub and good food
B. V.
Fantastic pub! Staff were all very friendly and helpful, great service. The menu is incredibly varied and all absolutely delicious. What a gem!
H. M.
Fantastic pub - excellent food, well prepared, tasty and good service. Lovely garden by the stream - a gem of a place. Family favourite - good young children facilities - children's cutlery and changing room/seat/high chairs.
R. H.
Lovely lunch with friends in pub garden by the river. Excellent food and good service.
K. P.
Another lovely dinner at The Shoe! Saw some really nice cars as a bonus! Food is so nice!
K. L.
Very good food. Not too sure about the change to the lovely little old bar areas it used to have but that's my personal choice. It seemed to lack something in the new decor.
R. C.
Very popular venue..serving excellent food at a reasonable price. This is a venue that my eldest daughter and boyfriend visit almost weekly as the food is so good. Theres limited parking immediately outside but its possible to park on the street within walking distance if you dont find a space at the pub / restaurant. Always popular it might be worth booking in advance ..you will not be disappointed with the food
M. R.
Nice country pub. Pub garden opposite over the road by the river.
Good selection and quality of food. From pub grub meals to posh baguettes.
Lots of walkers and cyclists stop by. Parking is limited but you can park around village and walk over.
R. T.
Excellent Sunday roast dinner.
D. D.
Absolutely amazing. I would go as far as saying the best food we've ever had. Lovely staff, fresh home made baked bread and sat next to a lovely fire. Perfection.
R.
Really nice pub in a quaint village. Lovely beer garden by the river.
Excellent food.
C. U.
After a long walk on Old Winchester Hill, the Shoe at Exton was a welcome relaxation. The sun was shining and the garden seating was packed as families enjoyed the unseasonal weather of glorious sunshine. My wife waited in the garden with the puppy whilst I ordered in the very well ordered pub, actually I suppose it should be called a gastro pub really. When i went to find the family, she had moved table 3 times as people left - to get us great seats in the full winter sun. The food was lovely, reasonably priced and produced much quicker than expected - well done chef. All good. So we had a pud, that was pretty good too and definitely home made. We'll be back.
J. C.
A wonderfull experiance at the shoe inn. Struggled to find a decent place to eat in the local area. Having had an awful meal at the new place hotel this pub was recommended to us from a local individual. Very fresh and rich. A word of advice don't fill up on the bread as the meals are relatively large. Quality food all round. My only complaint was that the pie didn't have enough beef in :s that being said I would eat it again...
M. D.
Great service, good sized portions. Very interesting menu, but had a great and simple kids menu.
M. T.
Had a really lovely meal here yesterday, and they even did our food at the last minute when the kitchen was supposed to be closing. That's service! Beutiful setting by the river, too. This place would get five stars if they had a wider range of ales, but I have no complaints at all otherwise.
N. S.
Pleasant service and excellent cods loin.
S. L.
Great food, great service! Enjoyed a family meal for a birthday and did not disappoint. All food was delicious, the steaks well cooked, and very accommodating for a Coeliac. Will be returning!
s. S. m.
perfect place to sit for a beer or coffee by the river
j. v.
Popular venue - get there early to bag a terrace table. Some lads & ladies keenly display their sporty summer roof-off rides. Gentle flowing stream in garden area across country lane. Staff efficient & pub grub mid price and mid quality.
B. N.
Great food, friendly staff. The bread, made on the premises, is to die for. Lunch times are pretty busy, best to book so as not to be disappointed. Sundays are so popular they only do timed sittings (12:00 and 14:30).
P. R.
Great stop off when cycling the old railway track nearby. Didn't eat but had a nice pint and looking at others food look good. Didn't feel out of place in my cycling gear.
S. C.
I don't get here enough. It's on a walk I do taking in Beacon Hill in Hampshire. This proves a lovely watering hole stop. It's a bustling favourite for food and beers and happily seems busy at all times when I visit. A beautiful part of the Meon River runs through the garden.
P. S.
Popped in for lunch while on our way to the new Forest. Despite being busy the staff were attentive, quick service and we were served an excellent lunch.
M. S.
kept driving passed and saying we must go in one day, so we did and were not disappointed. The food was absolutely beautifully the service was also great. This pub is a hidden gem. I will definitely be going back in the future.
H. E.
Excellent service and the staff is always friendly and smiley. Lovely food in a super setting, provided you like streams which we do (pub garden)
We are local and fussy and come here often.
S.
Don't miss this idyllic pub and garden in the quintessentially English village of Exton. Hipster bakery and brews aplenty too.
c. p.
Fantastic food and service. Gluten-free bread is lovely. The garden with the river is very pretty. Best to boomk as very popular. Dogs welcome. Disabled access.
D. V.
Really nice pub. It's been refurbished and they have done a fantastic job. Staff are polite and the food is tasty and fairly priced. I would recommend this pub highly.
s. p.
Been here a few times with my boyfriend. Fab food and friendly staff. Dog friendly
T. W.
Very. impressed with the atmosphere staff were amazing. I got given gluten free bread at the start without even asking, I was so amazed and grateful. Thank you.
D. B.
Lovely little village pub with this own bakery.
The beer garden is across the (very quiet) road with a stream at the bottom.
Very popular with walkers and cyclists along the South Downs way.
j.
Lovely surroundings and excellent food. A very enjoyable evening.
C. R.
Great food (I had the spicy shrimp taco), friendly staff, and cozy pub. Nice homemadebread as well.

We will be going back! 👍

Great place. Food was excellent, reasonably priced & arrived promptly. Dog friendly, which was very important to us. Staff we excellent, helpful & attentive.
M. G.
Great country pub when the weather is good as you can sit in the pretty garden. Inside is set for dinners (all tables for dining), so limited standing room only.
S. L.
Excellent food served quickly despite the pub and garden being full. Bar staff brought water and biscuits for the dogs. Highly recommended.
E. F.

M. G. (.
We had lunch in the garden. Table service. They were busy and I feared a long wait but in fact the food arrived quite quickly...and was delicious
S. F.
Wonderful food and service. Was fully booked but allowed us to eat outside and supplied us with hot water bottle if we was cold
W. B.
This really is a gem, lovely setting with fantastic food, what more could you ask for
C. C.
A wonderful pub serving artisan food beautifully cooked. Great ambiance. They also make their own bread. Always book ahead.
B. B.
Exton in the beautiful Meon Valley. The Shoe pub is a gem.... Great craft beers, efficient staff, timely service and the food is excellent.... I had Korean Pork.... I'm going to go and have it again..... It was warm enough to eat in the garden by the stream and look at all the different types of dogs and their annoying owners... You know the ones.... Talking in a patronising baby doggie voice to Sid the barking Beagle who is being driven to distraction by all the amazing food smells wafting by his wet shnoz. Dont let the odd cretinous dog owner put you off making a visit....
w. l.
Beautiful tranquil gardens boardering the river meon.i had chicken breast with smoked cheese and herb croutons on a bed of little gem lettuce.it was a pleasure to eat peacefully and watch a family of ducks playing in the water.attentive service but order and pay at the bar first.
H. H. (.
Gorgeous pub. Seating by the river. Great staff and the food was beautifully presented. Menu is very limited though which stopped me giving it 5*
S. W.
Lovely Pub, decent food but terrible service on our visit.
B.
Best Meal I had during my week in England.
The Steak & Mushroom w/Red Wine Gravy Pie was excellent, and unique with The Shoe Inn signature branded on the crust.
R. P.
Great riverside location, good beer, and good food menu. Can get VERY crowded, especially with walkers and cyclists. The riverside garden area can sometimes resemble 'Crufts'.
S. H.
I love this place! Mever disappointed with food both how presented and taste. Locally baked fresh bread and chutneys too. Lovely.
P. M.
Do not visit often as about 20 mins from home. But is a banker the great food very good service.
Normally go on special occasions when I know people will not be disappointed.
