Reviews of The South Western Arms
E. M.
Very nice garden to enjoy your drinks,
A jukebox to select your own music and an excellent pizza truck outside the pub with delicious pizza 🍕 😋
O. W.
Great pub, great selection of ales. Lovely beer garden and a very comfy inside. With a pizza van outside it's very hard to question whether its the best pub in Southampton
A. M.
Always used to visit to enjoy a pint with a Pizza thing, now it's back its like I never left. Good ales in a proper pub
K. B.
Very pleasant staff and polite. Garden is a pleasant environment too ideal in the summer.
D. “. V.
Went to see my friends,Gary & Ann Todd DJ,a great atmosphere and night.Saw a few old friends there too. There was a good choice of real ales to chose from
E. H.
Wonderfully quirky local pub with tons of character and an amazing courtyard garden. Large selection of well kept ales on offer, the bar staff were really welcoming & happy to let us sample a couple before deciding on a pint. Very relaxed atmosphere, a proper old fashioned pub. Would definitely recommend a visit.
S. O.
Great selection of real ales and a very very good juke box. What more could you want!
P. A.
Good ale pub feels like a good local.
S. M.
I'm definitely coming back to try some more ales soon !
D. H.
A Good day today, nice crowd, friendly people & an excellent choice of ales.... x
S. A.
Good local ,no thrills out fashioned pub, with good range of ales
J. W.
A rare and delightful traditional pub packed with character along with a warm friendly welcome. This pub has all the charm you would expect from a long established local pub. A fine selection of ales, ciders and wines. Though it has a spacious bar area it affords areas of seclusion for more intimate gatherings. The surprisingly extensive garden affords a welcome retreat in summer and has a covered area for all weather relaxation.
G. P.
Great ale selection at bargain prices. Beautiful interior and garden. Possibly my favourite pub ever!
T. H.
Really nice traditional style railway pub. Lots of wood and open areas. Plenty of ales on tap and a jukebox installed. Sometimes has live music and has a lovely big garden that's perfect to sit in on a hot day. Pool table upstairs with comfortable sofas. Sometimes outside is a pizza van that does wood fired pizzas that you can take into the pub. A great place to visit
C. S.
lovely boozer, caters for regulars as well as the drop ins. Worth a visit between trains if you're heading to/from Eastleigh or Portsmouth
K. S.
Proper pub in the suburbs of Southampton, if real ale is your beverage of choice then this is a fantastic place to visit. There is often 8 or 9 well kept real ales on pump, unless you visit it during one of the beer festivals which have too many different beers to count. This pub has a real country feel, plenty of outdoor seating in the beer garden, perfect on a summers evening. Only niggle is the reduction in seating recently due to chairs being replaced with large sofas so not so ideal for larger groups, not that this should detract from the overall experience, in what is one of the best pubs in the area.
G. D.
Cool decor, pool table upstairs. My only complaint is limited parking.
Fantastic pizza truck outside too.
Edit: Pizza Truck is now a bar five minutes away, called Paddle & Peel.
G. W.
One of my favourite pubs in Southampton. A good range of ales and nice staff in a cosy atmosphere. Good acoustics for a gig and especially enjoyed the Pink Floyd tribute band. If this pub were a band it could well be Pink Floyd: British, classic and unpretentious. Top pick for a pint
P. G.
Best pub in Southampton beer selection is unmatched and cider is great. Also the pizza van outside (Wednesday to Saturday) is the best pizza in Southampton. The upstairs can also be booked for events and the owners are really great about it. Very dog friendly.
N. B.
Good selection of beers. Beer garden. Often music playing at weekends (sometimes not great for chatting). Excellent wood fired pizza outside that you can take inside.
D. P.
Nice pub with a reasonable selection of real ales... the selection is not nearly as good as it's been in the past and doesn't pass as a craft bar. However, the beer garden is nice and the interior is very welcoming.
M. H.
Most friendly pub I've been to in Southampton. No matter what day or time of day you visit you will always drum up a conversation with someone. Great variety of real ales and all the usual pub games. Large beer garden with good over head cover for the smokers amoungst us, which is also great in the summer months. Live music typically about twice a month depending
A. K.
Great old school pub with good ales and cider. Darts, pool and other games available with a very functional garden even if not a pretty one. Good space inside too
I. S.
Not much fancy about the place but the beer's kept well and it's comfortable as an old misshapen cardigan. Try the pizza van too it's awesome. Enjoy talking in the beer garden or bar games inside.
G. N.
Been drinking in the Southie on and off for years, probably 25 years since I first visited. Was a local from 99 to 08, now back there occasionally as my partner lives nearby.
It's had its ups and downs over years, but fundamentally it's a bloody good real ale boozer! The young man who has it now seems to be making a decent fist of it, and I wish him well.
S. G.
Traditional looking pub with a large selection of guest ales and ciders. I can't fault the selection they have on tap which seems to be updated fairly regularly. There is a large beer garden to the rear and plenty of pub games indoors. There is usually a mobile pizza van outside if you need a bite to eat.
S. M.
Best burger I ever ate hands down. The beef minced in front of you from steak. Make sure to season it up and just enjoy the purity of a real pattie.
C. C.
Great selection of beers, lovely staff and a great, chilled local pub atmosphere. Pool table, darts, and a nice beer garden are all bonuses
G. B.
Good traditional ale pub
T. D.
Some of the best beers in town. Cosy, little bit grungy, pool, darts and table football. Also, use the top rated (unaffiliated) pizza van that parks outside and sit in the pub to enjoy. Cracking.
s. M.
It was a master stroke having the pizza van outside, now you can trick friends and family into going to the pub under the cover story of trying the best pizza in southampton!! Well played TSWA. Once they're in, there's a world of ales to help the pizza down. Good back garden in the summer, upstairs is good if there's a few of you(bit more space to spread out). Customers aren't a bad bunch either.
B. S.
First time at this pub as a pre-match watering hole. Fairly olde worlde back-street place which provided all the requirements - especially if you like real ale (which I dont particularly).
Its a bit of a trek to the football stadium - which was made extra challenging by being an unfamiliar route, in the dark and slightly hazardous by the misty & freezing conditions.
Would probably try it again prior to a match. I guess ut could be quite inviting on a sunny afternoon
R. P.
This was one of 3 'locals' I used when resigning British Rail stations through 1966-1968. Today it is a true local. Very friendly staff and locals, excellent cellar, decent menu and live music. Full of character and characters, small garden, free WiFi and nearby parking, although VERY limited...and might be chargeable?
B. N.
Nice pub good atmosphere
S. P.
Outside it looks like a traditional railway station pub, inside it’s a bit like a Hobgoblin pub - lots of wood, painted walls, leather sofas, and a modern student feel. There’s an upstairs room with pool and football tables. Lots of focus on the beers with around 10 on offer, including a house ale, Nellie’s Nob, which is a rebadge of Bowman’s Yumi. Holds beer festivals. Friendly customers, which on our Friday afternoon visit were mostly young males. This has a lot more life, character, and interest than the Guide Dog. As it’s almost next door to the Junction Inn, the two can be visited together. I am more inclined to the Junction Inn as it does food, is more family orientated, and has more of a traditional pub look and feel, but there will be those who prefer this place. Considered together these two make one of the best beer destinations in Southampton, second only to the Platform Tavern (which has its own brewpub).
M. B.
Great range of ever changing ales, relaxed cozy pub inside and lovely garden outside. Friendly staff, clean toilets - what more could you want?!
Good for Cornish beer too :-)
A. V.
Excellent selection of beers in this pub, good atmosphere too. Would recommend buying a pizza from the truck outside and eat it inside. Best pizza in Southampton!
A. G.
A lovely quirky pub set in the middle of residential terrace houses.
It’s lively, serves real ale, it has an outdoor area to sit and there’s plenty of space to park.
D. G.
Great pub and very convenient for the station. You get a good crowd in here after Saints games and there's always are large selection of quality ales.
K. O.
Brilliant "proper" pub, especially because you can buy a delicious pizza from "Its a Pizza Thing" van parked outside and then eat it in the pub! Wonderful atmosphere!

J.
A good local pub with a variety of beers and drinks. Not been recently but still hear its worth a visit by friends
D. J.
Good pub. Friendly. Pleasant garden. Fine selection of well kept ales. Worth a visit.
S. N.
The beer is excellent. But the music is horrendous and loud, and requests to turn it down were ignored (others have reported the same). Roll on the summer eh (and that lovely garden).
K. R.
Now this place is a cozy little pub with a great selection of drinks and to top it off there's a pizza van outside most evenings and the pizzas are one of the best we ever had and you can order go in the pub have a drink Go out get your pizza take it back in the pub to eat and drink or go home and eat it it's always good to have the option
S. J.

M. N.
Great place for real ales, don't do food, but really awesome wood fire cooked pizzas outside most nights.
J. Y.
Visited during the beer festival resulting in a vast range of real ale and cider. Pizza van (@itsapizzathing) in the carpark makes a great food option.
