Reviews of The Talisman

Had a really good meal here after the refurbishment. Friendly staff, good food and the beers always great. If I could suggest one thing - the range of beer was slightly limited at the time of visit. It would have been great to have tried something new.
M. S.
Lovely food in a very nice pub! Nice atmosphere created by the recent revamp. Plenty of room and tables. Also lots of choice on the menu and the service was warm and welcoming.
Well done! We'll be back soon.
J. W.
I went with my mum for the first time since your refit. Lovely decor and friendly staff. The menu was varied but we only wanted lunch so choose from starters. I was driving so was impressed when I saw a light non alcoholic drink., (not Diet Coke only which makes a change) I was shocked to find out for a can of Rio Tropical you charge £3-15!!!!! Won't be going back !

To celebrate our parents 40th wedding anniversary, we booked to have lunch here as we had heard such wonderful things. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table where they had left a special, personalised message for my parents. The service was superb throughout the meal and the food was absolutely delicious. To top it all off they even took the bottle of wine off of our meal as a kind gesture for our parents anniversary. This truly was such a wonderful meal with excellent customer service from start to finish. We will definitely be retuning soon! Thank you for your kindness and exceptional hospitality.

Very nice pub which has recently had a major refurbishment. Lovely outside area at rear of pub with very comfortable chairs and lovely atmosphere . Inside very well laid out for meals or just to have a drink . Very reasonable prices for food and drinks so would well recommend. Very good parking as well which is important especially for families with children .

Beautiful Refurb.Wife visited with friend. Think she must have chosen wrong meal as reviews seem very good but her chicken wrap was not great and chips were warmish and hard. Latte wasn't that hot either. Staff were lovely. Hoping next time Will be better.

The pub has recently been refurbed, and it has been done very well. But having only recently reopened it seems that the staff are still ironing out issues. The staff were great, friendly etc, but the service was very slow today, a Sunday, and there were a few items on the menu that were unavailable.
On the whole though, a great place.

Friendly and attentive staff. Lovely and relaxed atmosphere. Decor inside and out is high quality. Good selection of drinks at a reasonable price.
P. T.
A very open, warm and comfortable atmosphere inside, with a fantastic outdoor seating area.
The food was delicious, reasonably priced and the service was excellent, very attentive but not overbearing.
A good selection of local beers as well as a few staple favourites.

Tried out for the first time since the reopening to find much for comment. The large car park had plenty of space remaining at 4.30 on a Sunday afternoon. The garden seating area was popular in the warm sunshine. Inside the spacious building, devided into smaller cosy areas, around the bar area, there were a number of customers dining. The bar itself had no drinkers proving it up.
The ground floor appears bigger due to the clever interior design work of hanging dividers of rolling pins and watering cans. The walls are festooned with pictures that defy questing the common theme. The stairwells on the adventure trail to the 'loos' are also decked with a random collage of interesting photographs through the ages.
The is a snug/library with leather high back chairs and shelves stacked with books and curios. Plenty to entertain the eye whist waiting for a meal or opting out of a boring story.
Each of the devided seating areas has a large feature fireplace and a collection of ornaments. All doors have painted text to amuse the curious. The one leading off the toilet landing declares "not this one". A great sense of humour.
Be aware, there is a vary limited menu outside of traditional roast fare on a Sunday.
Taking time to pick the best on offer, drinks were ordered. Confusion over exactly what brand of Gin was available and delivering a full pint of Bitter in place of a 1/2 of shandy sadly set the scene for what was to follow.
After an extended wait, when a further drink refreshment was ordered and taken by a different server, the Gin arrived with ice and regular tonic (not as with the original order) and the selected bottle of Argentinian Malbec, came as an uncorked Spanish Rjoca. Both were replaced without question.
The Chicken Supreme is a dish in the classic French style, skin on breast with no sign of the English cream sauce addition.
The Eton mess was distinguished with the addition of ice cream and the Orange with Chocolate Torte was delicious.
A varied meal that hit some targets but missed many more. Servers should be able to replicate orders at a table without fault and a wine should never arrive at the customer opened. Will visit again when the menu (especially the wine list has the correct pricing - legal) and not on a Sunday, when hopefully the full kitchen skills will be on offer.
Dropping the cost of the wine as a birthday gift was appreciated but I notice this has been offered before at anniversary meals.
Try not to make this a standard, when known it could be costly.

Enjoy,,, good food tho the Beef was rare, SUNDAY ROAST within mins a chicken thigh replaced the beef. Staff very nice, attentive and all in all a lovely homely place... Spotless... yes, visit
L. C.
Really nice restaurant, food is delicious and, staff really accommodating. The beer garden is really nice too, nice place to grab a bite to eat and refreshing drink. Highly recommended 👌🏼
C. C.
Looks amazing now, team are unbelievable food is spot on, nothing like this in the area great place for brunch and dinner been both times
m. w.
Popped in after the recent refurbishment as it's one of my favourite pubs in the area. Looking really good, much bigger restaurant area and the revamped garden terrace is amazing, can't wait for summer!
C. U.
Now updated after a massive refurb' , the Tali is now is ivrant and very popular venue fir both food and/or drink. The outdoor area is lovely with plenty of space and the new Conservatory is super. Food is good too and staff are at the top of their game even when it's v v busy...
Nice place to relax, whether with the spouse, friends or both. A new regular haunt for us. Very Impressed.
Well done the entire Talisman team.
S. K.
Excellent meal. Staff were friendly and helpful loved the atmosphere and feel of the place. Would go back again.
A. C.
Lovely place we were seated in the garden which is a great space. The food we ordered was tasted fantastic and full of flavour.
D. S.
Brilliant outdoor area on a sunny day. They have recently renovated and this is now the best looking pub for miles around. They now serve interesting food and have a great selection of food. On the downside they are now one of the most expensive pubs in the area. Though they are definitely the nicest!
W. F.
After a horrible experience next door at Kams Palace we went back in the the Taliman to try and get some food ( were in there earlier for drinks ).
We were greeted by Harry & Harry from the Tali as there called! ( Harriet & Harry )
Harriet kindly found us a table and then Harry did the rest...
Fantastic customer service from Harry, our drinks came quickly and also our food which was really nice. We were regually checked on by Harry and also a couple of the other members of the team who couldn't help enough.
Brilliant all round service from Harry and the team, we would of stayed there all night but we had a party to go to but they rescued our evening and sent us with smiles on our face to enjoy the rest of our evening.
Well done Harry and the team.
T. R.
The decor was amazing and the staff too but wasn't impressed with sunday roast at nearly £17 and not very good at all.
S. P.
1st time visit. Nicely refurbished. Good ale and basic but homely food. Staff friendly and efficient
A. S.
First impressions as you walk in is that its a nice venue that has been well decorated within a theme. However the next part of first impressions was not so good. The staff don't engage with you, and are more than happy to stand around doing something that could be done later rather that attend to you and seat you in the restaurant.
Once you get over the hurdle of staff not wanting to seat you, the rest of the experience is superb.
The food is good and plentiful, The menu is a good all round menu with plenty of options, The waiting staff look after you and make sure you have everything you need and most importantly they have the know how to leave you alone when they are not needed and to attend to you when something is needed.
Its a shame about the first impressions really as this would have been a 5 star review otherwise. If the staff attend to people waiting to be seated in a restaurant that had at least 10 tables empty. Then this review would have been a little more positive.
K. M.
To be honest as nice as the refurb is i couldnt see a lot of difference on the previous decor and i wonder where on earth they managed to spend 1.5 million.
M.
This was our first visit, so we weren't too sure how to order as there were signs saying to order at the bar, but where we were we had waiters (with plaques on the tables with numbers stating to order from the bar). Once settled we had quite good service. We had three or four different waiting staff, but all were professional and very friendly. We went on a late Sunday afternoon and had some problems with shortages and slow service. We were kept appraised of progress and were offered some complimentary items in recompense. The food and the drinks were above standard and overall it would be a place I would return to and recommend to others to try.
B. B.
First time back after big money revamp....pleasantly surprised....Great service from attentive staff...nicely cooked food ....we will be back .....
p. b.
First time to visit. Found staff very pleasant and helpful. My meal of my choice was very good
A. S.
Great local, post the million pound refit a very different experience.
s. b.
Good pub, shame it has closed until Feb for a refit. Service was good both ordering at the bar and on the app. Called in advance and was told they would have limited stock due to running it down which was good to know in advance. There was still plenty to choose from for the non fussy drinkers out there. Looking forward to seeing what its new look is when it reopens
A. e.
Lovely clean, spacious and friendly staff. Food was great to.
D. B.
As per all Hall and Woodhouse establishments we have visited, the venue was just great, the food delicious and the service exemplary.
K. M.
Fantastic pub with a very warm welcome, great food and drinks.
I. W.
What a transformation. Still feels like a homely, family place but it looks amazing now. Such attention to detail. Food is as good as ever. Staff are as good as ever and nice to see most of them back. Prices have gone up a bit but still great value. Glad you are back.
N. S.
Spacious well-decorated pub, friendly service, and management who care about getting it right. Following a minor comment in an emailed post-visit survey, they went out of their way to discuss and make it right. Impressed. Will return soon.
P. S.
Popped in for a beer, nice refurbishment but wasn't impressed on first sight of the menu.
H. K.
Went here for a family meal on a Sunday, the menu was very small with not a great deal of choice. What we received was of good quality however the service wasn't great as we had to send 50% of our meals back as there was something wrong with them. Eg wrong side, steak cooked wrong, wrong sauce on different steak. Dog friendly indoors which was a plus!
J. R.
Booked a last minute table for lunch a what a great idea it was! Staff were all very welcoming, incredibly friendly and helpful. And as for the food, well it was incredible. We had the steak frites along with the steak and tangle foot pie. Everything was cooked to perfection and perfect portions. The steak was the highlight of the whole meal. It was amazing. Compliments to the chef indeed!
N. R.
New, limited menu was easier to navigate. The refurb is impressive.
b. c.
Lovely refit, garden area exceptional. Shame about the staff.
D. L.
Really nice friendly staff in a great pub, plenty of parking and ramped access. Table service and one way systems all easy to follow. Went for the Sunday roast and thought it was excellent, unlimited Yorkshire puddings but generous portions meant I only managed a second! Highly recommend.
C. K.
Only stopped off for a drink, that is why I only gave 4 stars as we did not eat, therefore could not review food.
We were treated very professionally, all rules & regs explained to us. We went wed 23rd and table service had been in place since they reopened. Staff very helpful and very observant of our needs, were at the table without being asked to take our order for our second drink. Will definitely be visiting again, felt comfortable and safe
J. W.
A lovely family lunch today . Good food . Nothing too much trouble for the staff excellent service delivered . Would highly recommend a visit to this establishment you won’t be disappointed .
D. C.
Very good service at lunchtime today and good food. Generous portions - we shared a starter - and the steak frites was tender. Fish cakes were nice too. Thank you!
L. O.
We were really impressed with the way they are protecting the staff and patrons through social distancing. For example, they put the foot onto a tray next to the table for you to take so as not to get too close. Very sensible.
I had a burger which was OK. Not the highest quality of meat unfortunately.
H. N.
Excellent food. Great service.
p. O.
Beautiful pub with loads of space. Great character
T. L.
Enjoyed evening. Food ok. Bistro pub style.
K. H.
Just had a lovely lunch. Can not fault anything from the moment we arrived until we left. Everything explained on arrival perfectly and waitress was lovely. We even changed seats and everything from the table to chairs was cleaned again. Food delicious. This is the first time we have eaten out since COVID and can honestly if you are concerned as I was go here. Thank you
C. I.
They're doing a great lockdown offer - £7 to stay in, use their WiFi, all the tea/coffee you can drink and a bottle of beer to take away. Table service for everything. Staff were attentive and saw I was taking calls so turned the music down.
Star off simply cos it was a little chilly! Normally there's a lovely fire and I get there wasn't many of us in but not 'perfect' because of it!
A. R.
One of my favourite pubs by far ❤️ Customer service at its finest, food is always spot on, can't ask for more!
R. K.
We enjoyed our meal. The lemon 🍋 chicken was excellently cooked, and the gammon steak was brilliant. The Gluten Free menu was very good and gave a good choice of food. Service was good and we would recommend the talisman for a 🍴. We will be returning there in the future.
I. M.
I like the Talisman. It's got a nice atmosphere with pleasant staff and great food. The portion size and quality when dining represents good value. A burger and chips comes in at £11.
Good place to meet work colleagues and will accommodate larger parties.
J. K.
The Tali has reopened and has table booking, efficient online ordering and one way systems in place to ensure social distancing and hygiene measures are adhered to. We had an outdoor table and I was very impressed with how they are working and felt safe meeting a friend for a couple of drinks.
T.
Service is decent, food is good, the prices are ok. All round a decent pub. Just about enough parking though some spaces are a little small. The outside seating area is cute. Only downside is I once had the chicken liver paté there and it made me very ill. I've eaten there since and had multiple different meals and had no issues.
A. B.
Fantastic. Great food and lovely staff
D. S.
Good size pub with a large garden that has plenty of seating. There is a good selection of beers and ales. The food is decent and not too expensive. They do allow group bookings which make work meet ups easy. Staff are very accomadating and friendly. Overall great pub.
S. P.
Former strawberry barn, this Badger pub is full of character and charm. Well kept and well run this is a restaurant pub that also has plenty of room for those who simply want a drink. I like that there is a formal restaurant area in conjunction with the large and welcoming family pub area. The choice is yours. You can also eat in the pub area, where you can have a simple dish of cheesy chips or other various sharers as well as full meals with desert. The ambience is relaxed and refined, so may not suit those looking for something more upbeat or loud. The rooms appear to have themes, such as the racing car theme in the room in which we sat. In another room there is a large mural of women picking strawberries. Service is excellent - polite, professional and quick. There was a choice of three Badger ales. Large outdoors seating area at the back, and a very large car park. We liked this place. We liked the ambience, the beer, and the food. And it was good value.
C. B.
Lovely vegan meal. Malaysian aubergine curry tamarind
J. J.
They were fanatstic when I turned up with my little one who was very hungry as Traffic made us very late for her dinner. They put an order straight in for me for my little one and helped me get everything I needed for her sorted. We will definitely return. Wonderful, Helpful, Welcoming staff.
J. P.
First time visiting here after moving to the area nearly 2 years ago. Lovely beer garden and inside was an old fashioned layout of a pub which is great. Friendly staff, clean throughout and nice food. Will make this my local from now on!
G. P.
Nice pub great beer garden and friendly warm atmosphere inside, shame it's quite big inside as that does take little away from the atmosphere. Popular at a lunch time with the work crowd which can cause slow service. Bar nibbles/sides/sharing were pretty good. And a good choice of beer
M. O.
Lovely pub which also serves basic pub-grub.
Good selection of beers, lots of seating inside and out and prices on drinks are pretty good.
The food is pretty basic pub food but is priced like it's a cut above. It isn't. It's no better or worse than a popular, national, pub chain that you've no doubt visited.
S. C.
Always a fantastic atmosphere here and we have had fantastic meals too. However, last Friday was an exception. Food was unsatisfactory - seafood platter was a strange mix of hot and cold food and the whitebait was soggy. The koftie kebabs were ok but nothing special. Hoping it was a one off as we do like the pub normally.
P. W.
Great place for a pint or 2...
A. B.
The Talisman has my heart. After traveling all around the English countryside dipping in and out of pubs I've come to the conclusion that The Talisman may be the best pub of all. Boasting a wide range of beers and ciders on tap, not to mention some of the best food I've eaten. The Fish and Chips and Blue Cheese Burger were the stars of the show. I hope to visit one last time on my trip for a nice cold brew by the fire.
S. B.
I've not been in The Talisman since I was a teenager (a really long time ago) and had heard over the years it's rep wasn't "too good" so avoided visiting until yesterday when my brother-in-law booked a table for us all.
I was surprised how evenly spaced out the seating was - nothing worse than being crammed in like sardines. We were shown to our table by a lovely young man, who stuck with us throughout the whole meal, and for whom, nothing seemed to be too-much-trouble - customer service as it should be.
All of us chose the Roast Beef and it was just delicious. The beef was cooked just right and melted in the mouth. The roast potatoes were the best I've ever had when eating out, and the huge selection of vegetables were cooked well, and tasted great. The yorkshire pudding was lovely (although I'm not 100% convinced it was 'home-made') and the gravy (of which there was extra available) added to the whole meal.
Then came pudding and I'll admit had I seen on someone else's table what I ordered, I would never have chosen it, and what a taste sensation I would have missed out on. I ordered the Toffee Waffle, assuming it would be a normal griddled waffle with a squirt of toffee sauce and a dollop of icecream. I was wrong, for it was almost a sticky toffee pudding (there was waffle on the top apparently - I had mine covered in sauce so didn't notice) with a hot toffee sauce in the centre. On the side of the plate was a oat crumble, with a large dollop of icecream (2 of us chose this pudding and they were most obliging when we asked if we could swap the Rum and raisen it came with, for vanilla and chocolate). I am not usually a dessert eater, choosing to have a starter and avoid pudding, but I am so glad I never for it was an absolute taste sensation - had I not been so stuffed from the fabulous sized portions, I think I could have quite happily ordered another.
In fact, the food was so good I was even able to stop myself from forking (not in a good way) the woman sitting behind us who had the most atrocious table manners of anyone I've encountered; a rabid ferral dog would have made less noise than her chomping, and due to the portions being so good, I'm not entirely sure why she seemed so intent on trying to gouge out sections of plate to eat - she really cannot have been that hungry.
The only reason I cannot award 5 stars is because of our first round of drinks. 4 of us had asked for "large" and whilst the glasses themselves were indeed large, they were filled to only just above the halfway line and would therefore have been better in a normal sized glass.
m. w.
Awesome place with friendly staff. Ample parking, good selection of beer and great food
J. A.
Really lovely pub. Great quality food and good selection of beer. Staff were friendly and helpful. Pub had an excellent atmosphere. Plenty of car parking onsite and good sized outdoor area.
C. M.
A sandwich lunch with a friend on a Tuesday. Pub was quiet at noon, busier by 13.30. Good choice of sandwiches, rolls, etc., made to order, around £6.50 each. Good unobtrusive service.
F. F.
Now this is a great place to eat; I went with my family on a Sunday for a roast and the food was awesome and the service great. We truly had a good time; definitely will be going there again.
D. G.
Tasty Food served quickly - good choice for a spontaneous meal out :-)
J. D.
Simply excellent!! Delicious food, excellent Covid safety precautions and delightful staff. Will definitely be visiting again. Highly recommended 👌
G. W.
Visited here with a party of 21 people. There is a large car park. Both food and service were excellent considering the size of our party and the fact that they were fully booked. Hope we go back next year.
S. S.
Well established pub with a lot of locals support. Meals are above the normal pub food which reflects the price but worth the premium. Late evening is a starting point for the youngsters heading for town, can be crowded and lively.
P. P.
Unfortunately under refurbishment at present, but will try again soon 👍
L. C.
Fabulous evening in the lovely garden. Great food and service and felt very safe.
C. P.
Food was absolutely outstanding. The service was poor. The grumpy waiter took our order for drinks quick enough but we had to wait around 45 minutes between the starter and main. Our waiter had completely disappeared and I would guess that we had been forgotten about.
G. W.
I've been here many times. Menu options pretty much the same as every other pub in the area. It used to offer quite a varied menu, which is why I used to go there. No longer.
R. J.
Good food and friendly helpful staff with a good atmosphere.
D. C.
Nice enough pub but food menu doesn't have much choice on it and a bit more expensive compared to other pubs in the area
C. L.
Lovely place. variety of beers and ales good menu great atmosphere. Only downside they don't do snacks ie sandwiches or rolls
A. N.
Wonderful Sunday lunch, pointed out a small issue and that has been rectified with generosity ( we never demanded or expected that) we fully appreciated. We were impressed with the service and generosity and staff are working very hard and are true professionals.
C. G.
Very nice ambience and new surroundings
K. P.
Almost all employees are great, beer is ok, had drunk better in Poland :D place is very English and you can feel it. A place you can't miss if you're a foreigner. ~5£ a beer
t. d.
Great service, lovely atmosphere, and really nice food.
C. H.
Love the Talisman! Their food is amazing and always a good atmosphere. Would advise booking if going to eat during busy periods, but definately worth a visit.
A. W.
Great food and service, disappointed no log fire and felt rushed out on the dot of 90 minutes as there was only 3 tables with customers on and no one waiting. I guess this is down to covid!!
l. a.
Fantastic food the menu was great so much to choose from, the staff really friendly, was very nice to be sat outside under the heaters till closing time, we'll definitely be back again
S. M.
Very popular, relaxed place to meet up with friends for a few drinks and/or a bite to eat. It's a Hall and Woodhouse pub so their usual good choice of dishes is on offer.
N. H.
Great service, great food. Very comprehensive systems in place to enforce social distancing and hence allow a relaxed and enjoyable time
J. C.
Good place for after work has been refurbished not so long ago so looks good and is modern with lots of wood has a beer deck but view is of the car park. Food is gastro pub style and they have some nice ales on tap.
J. F.
Good atmosphere, food was okay but I've had better. As a pub this is a nice place to have a meal if you ever find yourself around Fareham.
D. B.
Good service and wide menu. Food was well cooked and ambiance comfortable. Have eaten here 3 times lately. All without complaint.
T. B.
Good place for work lunch and post work drinks. Beer garden consists of view of the car park. Food is gastro pub style and is good quality.
Good drink and ale selection
G. R.
The food here has always deep Ok, no complaints but the recent reduced menu has really reduced choice. I'll be waiting for a while to see if they build it back up again. There's plenty of places with a better choice.
G. F.
Love this pub, great beer, great food, covid distancing really good, good atmosphere.
Good on a Friday/Saturday night
D. M.
Food has been good on all the occasions we have been, good selection on the menu. Staff are friendly and service is good.
A. G. U.
Great service, did enjoy the food, drinks and great company. Nothing bad to say, thank you.
B. C.
A varied menu in a bustling pub. We have eaten here several times recently and been happy with our food and service. Will continue to return here
C. H.
Nicely welcomed by Jason and shown to a table. Drinks ordered and delivered promptly what more could you ask for. Excellent service.
P. D.
Just the right size menu for a pub. Chose the burgers, very nice and the bacon on it was lovely. Nice bar staff.
C. B.
Their lunch menu is reasonably priced with a wide selection of meals and snacks. Friendly staff and a lovely restaurant area. Would definitely return.
R. F.
Delicious lunch and dinner menu as well as a broad range of ales and wine. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is great. Over 21's only in the evening
M.
Just had drinks so not sure how good the food is. Went on a friday night and service was quite fast considering.
d. y.
Great atmosphere. Good food.
B. H.
When are you opening as I need a drink at my local
J. W.
Excellent pub. Warm, friendly, good food in a great atmosphere and the service is exceptional, they truly make you feel at home.
K. M.
Excellent lunch served by friendly staff! Reasonable prices and pleasant surroundings, including outside seating.
J. H.
The food is really nice and the service is good. Garden can get cramped when busy and the drink selection is a little limited.
T. W.
Delicious food, lovely atmosphere. Certainly worth a visit. I will definitely go back again.
a. h.
Food was good. Most of the bar staff are great. Friendly and welcoming. Except Sophie. What a rude young person. It’s a shame. Rude rude rude
M. E.
Good quality beer and most of the food reasonably priced would never have breakfast in here again though £11.60 for the smallest breakfast I've ever had
L. D.
Nice food but didn't have my first 2 choices and it was a cold day but fires not lit. Friendly staff, though.
N. R.
Real cosy pub with great food, good choice of ale at reasonable prices, alll with a friendly service and a smile. Would definitely recommend.
S. M.
Nice beer selection, food is honest pub grub. Friday evening is a bit too crowded.
Nice pub.
D. M.
four of us had a very nice meal last night, cant fault the cleanliness or ambience of the place, the service or the food.
but why the sheet of paper under our food? I hate that!
M. M.
Really good food, well priced, great beer and friendly staff. Highly recommended
D.
Lovely place xx
S. B.
Friendly staff with amazing food. I love sea food and the fisherman platter is so much better compare to most of the pub I've ever been to.
A. F.
