Reviews of Black Lion Inn

Great little pub, great food for lunch and nice beer. Sitting outside in the sun it's hard to beat this place. There is a car park, but it's also a nice place to stop if you're walking along the canal.
C. G.
Great pub and beer. Food was well priced and delicious. Will take something special to beat here on a nice summer day/evening.
I. S.
This pub is brilliant, a lovely area and great walks, when the trains are on even better! Food is fantastic well worth a trip 👍
C. D.
But if a drive and certainly off the beaten track. But we’ll worth it with a lovely atmosphere, great view and superb food and drink.
Z. C.
Amazing pub, staff super welcoming even though we dropped in last minute with a large group!
k. r.
Lovely pub, nice menu friendly staff. Difficult to get to if walking like for me is a problem.
C. H.
Really enjoyed my first visit to this pub, the staff were very friendly we had a good laugh. Food, very large portions and really nice. My son goes there regularly with his family. The scenery is beautiful. Must visit again.

Smashing pub, nice garden with heaters oh and fish to look at, plus an indoor fire place setting area, very old fell because it is old. Also if the pub it full sit in the outdoor department with a fire if it's cold. Great bee6as well.
K. L. H.
Lovely little pub not wheelchair friendly was raining si didn't do it justice. Landlord was very welcoming and did his best to make us all comfortable. Lovely chips!!!!
S. K.
Character pub with food and good selection of beers considering its remote location. Well worth a visit if you are walking, boating, or passing on the steam railway. Use it or lose it 🍺👍
m. b.
Fantastic little place, well worth the one hour walk from Cheddleton along the canal. Really good food and the staff were spot on. Oh and the beer is really well kept. Highly recommended.
J. C.
What a great pub, traditional good food and great beer. Well worth the visit. A truly special place.
M. M.
Great location, alongside the railway, canal and river and within RSPB reserve. Good selection of real ales and ciders. Dog friendly. Plenty of outdoor seating.
E. A.
Great pub, great staff extremely polite and very resnoble prices. Aswell as being right on the canal it's a great place to stop after a day out on the boat.
S. A.
Amazing little pub. Very nice and helpful staff, they even did take out on our lunch as we couldn't stay long.
D. W.
One of the best locations of any pub ... once you've found it! Sits beside Caldon canal, river Churnet and preserved steam railway - what could be better!
P. M.
Very nice pub overlooking the weir at Consall with fantastic views, especially when the steam train drives by. Decent prices and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
A. R.
Fine food, great selection of ales AND ciders interesting location and friendly staff. Defo not too posh, just a great pub.
M. M.
Wonderful location, great beer and fantastic chips!
S. A.
Tucked in beyond the Consall RSPB walks along a winding track. This pub is nestled beside the canal and just along from Consall Station on the Churnet Valley Railway. Great food in huge portions. A jewel.
J.
Great hosts, really enjoyed the food, great location. Must be 20 + years since last there but certainly will not be that long next time, more like a couple of weeks.
B. E.
Great pub, great food and drink and alongside the canal and railway. Brilliant place to be on a nice day.
J. E.
Lovely pub with nice choice of drinks. Lovely food and cakes. There is a covered outside seating area with plenty of seating which is ideal. A made-up tyre place for children to amuse themselves. Worth a visit when on the railway
J. P.
We travel 40 minutes to here every single weekend. All the staff are lovely, service is amazing and the food is unreal! Can’t recommend this place enough. Dog friendly too which is really helpful!! Love love love 💗
I. S.
Lovely friendly pub with a great selection of ales and ciders, which the husband really enjoyed...
R. P.
Came across this on a walk at Consall Woods... Conveniently for us about half way round the walk.
It's classic British pub well situated with a view of the river, canal and steam railway line. Reasonable selection of real ales and ciders and home cooked food - there's an outside grill setup so maybe do summer BBQ food from there too.
H. H.
Amazing pork, stuffing and apple bap at the end of a rather cold walk.. pork isnt my favourite but so glad we gave it a try, the lovely lady said it was nice and it really was.. loads of meat on there and so tasty.. we had a cheesecake in an easter egg as well which was yummy.. cant fault the staff or the food..we'll be back soon 😁xx
V. A.
Really nice pub, good food and in a stunning location
R. U.
Really love it here. The old steam trains and the canal really set up the location well here for more than just a meal. The food is nice and the portions are big. I have been here for the Rail Ale Trail where you can go on the train and go between local pubs to try different tipples - a definite must in the summer!
L. R.
Nice and friendly pub. Dog friendly. Seating area a bit cramp and dining ok. Pub is on a river bank, and free parking is a couple of minutes walk, over a bridge. Good service. Average pub and informal but has lovely surroundings. Consal railway st. Just a few mins away. Steam engines go past the pub.
D. P.
Such an interesting location for anyone that likes beer, food, heritage railways, canals, walking or indeed all the lot! The pub is dog friendly, the food is very good (and good value), the beer is well kept. Visit for the views if the weather's good or a warm by the fire if it isn't
H. T.
Fantastic Sunday Lunch.
Great value for money, a lovely setting and great service.
C. H.
Staff were polite and friendly, great place for a drink after a long walk along the canal
D. M.
Once you find it you have to walk from the carpark to cross a river by footbridge bridge, then a canal and then a railway track. But it is well worth the effort as the pub is very rustic, sometimes with live music and really good food and beer. Always a friendly warm welcome for walkers, drivers and boaters. Thoroughly recommended. I'm from the south coast and always try to visit when in the midlands. 5 visits so far.
t. c.
Always freindly staff, great gluten free cheesy chips as a snack during a great walk. Take a walk down to Black lion consul, you love it. Tom n Rie
W. !.
Stunningly beautiful location, friendly staff, wonderful place for a rest after a walk through the gorgeous local countryside :)
J. U.
This is a right gem of a pub in a very rural setting. Formally a black Smith the black lion sits in a wonderful view point. You park a bit of a walk away so if you have mobility issues keep that in mind. You'll have to wash across an uneven car park then across a narrow bridge which crosses a canal balance Weir. Then further down the path you will cross the Churnet Valley railway line and then up some steps to the pub.
It's great for a drink, food is ok but very limited on the menu and I think they buy in most of what they serve buy prices are very reasonable. They do have a good selection of beer on draught too.
My only criticism is that they don't challenge people smoking in the outside marquee which is enclosed. This means that if you're affected by smoke you will not enjoy sitting outside because the limited seating area outside the main door often has smokers so if you want to sit outside and enjoy the sun and view you can't.
Overall though I love this pub despite its remote location, it's charming and a great place to chill.
P. T.
Love it here. Great walk from Froghall with the knowledge of a fab pub, great beer and views.
N. D.
A down-to-earth, comfortable place. Hearty snacks (vegan if need be) and hot drinks available at reasonable prices in a unique setting.
C. s.
Wonderful location, excellent food and drink at reasonable prices and excellent service and friendly staff
J. L.
Lovely quaint place by the canal & Railway, lovely food, definitely worth a visit
S. W.
Saw the pub from the steam railway trip and decided to find it once we'd left the train. Postcode took us down a few long tracks with cut outs for passing to a car park beside the canal and railway. Could see the pub and walked over both to sit on the terrace. Good selection of ales and ciders and we ordered steak and ale pie with chips and veg. All very good and service was fairly quick.
Managed to see the 1:30 train from a good vantage point
S. S.
Super family meal, great value in unique surroundings.
Never going to win a Michelin Star but doesn't aim to. A simple menu and great ale in a very traditional pub.
Well worth the effort to get to this gem of a pub.
J. D.
Amazing location , steam trains stop to let the passengers call for a drink , canal boaters too
J. P.
Very olde world pub. Fabulous scenery especially when the steam trains run by. The food is excellent.
k. w.
Great place, great people and the bonus of steam trains at weekends plus barges on the canal
J. S.
Great place to watch boats and trains go by. Friendly staff and some really good ales. Food portions are huge...beware. Could do with a little tidy in the outside areas but otherwise a lovely old pub.
G. M.
Friendly staff, great settings and wonderful chips done in beef dripping. Don't tell my wife!!!!!
J. W.
Don't often get to visit this beautiful pub in the Churnet Valley but it's just as lovely now as ever. So peaceful and remote but great beer and good food. Definitely worth the effort!
J. r.
A fabulous old pub set in a beautiful location serving excellent food. The staff are friendly, effecient and thoughtful as they even served our dog with a bowl of water ..now that's service. WELL worth a visit. Thank you for a great day out.
S. F.
Excellent, friendly service. Dog friendly. Great food and drink!👍
A. C.
Price service all very good especially as we were tourists
C.
Great pub. Best off peak as it can get very busy on summer weekends.
Great beer and decent good value pub grub!
N. M.
Always a good place to stop for a drink and a bite to eat beautiful spot 🍺
J. M.
Stopped at the Consall station and went for a walk around then sat at the black lion pub for a drink. Very quaint and in a great location to watch the steam train pass through before it returned for us to board
C. P.
What an excellent venue for a country pub.
A pleasant walk with our dog: Daisy before a decent pint. All whilst viewing the Lime Kilns over the railway line, beyond the beautiful canal & it's native flora & fauna. Marvelous,
J. M.
Moored up just round the corner and popped in for dinner - had the most amazing food and such a warm welcome from Laura and all the other girls. We had three meals - burger with pulled pork, fried egg and chips, homemade steak, ale and mushroom pie with chips and a lasagne - all were totally delicious and none of us could finish our meals! Couldn't fault anything at all - even Monty the dog got the warmest of welcomes and totally enjoyed the meaty treats that Laura gave him. If you are ever in the area then go, you won't be disappointed - we will be back......!!
S. W.
Great food great pint and great staff. Definitely worth a visit
R. P.
Absolutely love thus pub. The food is delicious along with a great selection of ales. We park at either Froghall or Cheddleton and walk along the canal, or take the train on the Churnet Valley Railway. The Black Lion takes you back in time, brilliant service, delightful staff, and a lovely position. Take the time to enjoy the pub and its surroundings.
D. R.
Really good atmosphere. Good food and good beer
Great barmaid
C. H.
Great pub and and always an excellent beer and cider selection. Proper good pub grub with very big portions!
D. F.
Lovely food 😋 cosy ,friendly staff ,will be going back soon❤
d. s.
Love this pub so much, we like to park in Consall nature reserve and walk through the forest adjacent to the road , then walk up to the car park and cross the bridge, there is an old lime kiln right next to the canal which is worth a quick look.
Located right on the churnet valley railway they serve food and drink, the food is excellent, better than any chain pub you have been too, still have to eat and drink outside for covid purposes but it is better outside as you get the lovely views, staff are friendly and helpful, great choice of food and drink, dogs welcome.
You can do the long purple walk through the conservation area and end up on the canel, then its a short walk to the pub.
Highly recommended, dont miss out.
P. S.
Stunning. Lovely people. Great choice of beers etc. Fantastic food in a Beautiful location.
p. s.
Excellent lamb dinner & a few beers in the October sunshine 🌞
P. R.
Great little place in the middle of nowhere. only way to get there is along a very small long road are by train you could walk along the canal are even get there by boat
T. B.
Great real pub with real ales and fab pub grub and pork pies.... one of the stops on the railway line you must get off and visit
D. S.
No seats but not a big problem. Sunday dinner in a box - meat was beautifully cooked , good selection of veg and a decent portion. Waiting time was a bit long but the surroundings are pleasant.
T. T.
Lovely place to visit, staff are friendly and helpful and welcoming, beer is spot on and good selection and food is good.
M. A. N.
Best Black Lion Bonanza burger ever , location and staff is amazing. Thank you
N. P.
Great food and beer, Great entertainment especially bank holidays
P. B.
Good drink & food very friendly
R. F. G.
Let's start with the positives - this pub is in an outstanding location and serves a cracking selection of real ales. I've being coming here all of my life (I'm 41 now) and although the owners have changed, the railway had changed from freight to heritage and the canal no longer runs purple, the view down the wooded valley encompassing the railway and canal seems timeless. However, on the downside the 'bostin-baps' were a bit of a disappointment in two fronts. Firstly, there was only one vegetarian option for this (and pretty much the rest of the menu) and it consisted of lots of lack lustre mild cheddar grated into a very large cob. Secondly, 'bostin' and 'baps' are not local words - or at least I've never heard of them and my mum was born in Cheddleton about 2 miles away. More appropriate would be Staffordshire oatcakes. When these use to be on the menu there were a few combinations that could be made up for a vegetarian oatcakes - my favourite being cheese and mushrooms. Overall, this is still a great place to visit and have a drink but next time I might bring a picnic.
H. M.
Beautiful place 🥰 staff friendly food fantastic 😋
A. J. A.
Location, location, location! Nice beer also, the Export is a must try.
N. W.
Very nice rural pub with british food. It's a tough find but worth it. Added bonus Churnet Steam Railway passes. Also on a Canal. Nice old picturesque area.
D. P.
Not the easiest place to get to due to narrow windy roads however the pubs based in a quirky peaceful location so worth the stress. The food is really nice at reasonable prices so worth visiting if you're in the area and after some decent pub food.
S. H.
Nice traditional pub good honest food.
A. C.
Great friendly country pub. Great food - & so much of it. Highly recommended - been coming here for many years.
P. H.
Lovely welcome, friendly folk and super food. Highly recommend a visit. But make sure you have a torch for the walk Home.
k.
Great place for lunch and a good selection of real ales. Friendly staff and plenty to look at outside in a very sweet little spot
M. S.
Wonderfully set in Consal valley. Food is very good and excellent value
L. H.
A beautiful pub!
Watching the train go by on Sundays is lovely. The small play area for kids is cool too!
J. A.
Lovely setting. Great selection of beers. Expensive soft drinks and only 1 person on the bar on a sunny Bank Holiday Sunday was a poor choice. The food being sent out of the kitchen looked and smelled lovely. Nice place to watch the steam trains pass by
R. H.
My cyclist companion and I shared an excellent vegetarian dish for Sunday lunch with real cask ale and proper crisps!. What's not to like?
N. S.
No frills canal/railway side pub with lovely views of the churnet valley with a heritage railway station near by~good range of beers & ciders and the bar meals are good value and tasty.
G. M.
went there tday only thing to say was wow the place is amazing with steam trains running alongside you have to cross the track to get into the pub with canals and walkways we had dinner there the food was amazing the staff were all polite and as buisy as they were would still stop and talk to you this place is a 35 mile journey from where we live but will definately be going back there soon
W. C.
Good pub but a terrible road to get to it. It's well off the beaten track, and the track that leads down to it is full of enormous potholes,so close together, you cannot avoid them.
S. D.
Really friendly service by lovely staff. Great selection of drinks and the food is simply wonderful. Highly recommended
K. E.
Absolutely love this pub. Ordered 3 breakfasts and a breakfast bap take away. Absolutely lovely! Definitely ideal for walkers to be able grab hot food and drink in this cold weather
M. M.
Nice coffee great location and remote
C. W.
One of my favourite pubs. Great selection of guest sales and ciders. It's a proper pub. Great to sit outside on a nice day. Next to the canal with the occasional steam train rattling past. It's the perfect place after a nice walk around Consall or just along the toe paths. The food is always great, but when it's busy you can often find yourself having to wait up to 45 minutes. Which is no hardship in such a great location!
G. B.
Beautiful seeing for a quaint country pub. Lovely food... stayed for a turkey bap and chips and value for money in exceptional.
T. N.
Absolutely amazing staff friendly and approachable food absolutely amazing recommend the Boston baps well organized with the covid rules and just amazing pub only thing that I would like to see is bit more for children to do a play area or something to keep them occupied but for my self it's a beautiful pub and will definitely be going up there again
M. C.
What a surprise to find this little gem of a pub. Great little place out of the way. Food served and real ales on the go. Staff and the locals make you feel really welcome. All i can say is can't wait for my next visit.
T. H.
Very good quality food an service
L. P.
Stopped off at this gem of a pub whilst travelling along the Caldon canal on our boating holiday. Our party of seven had a selection of drinks from their great range of cask ales and enjoyed a wonderful lunch. Great food and a warm welcome. We even bought one of their large pork pies to sample on our narrow boat... delicious. Highly recommended as a place to stop for a pint and delicious homemade food.
A. D.
What a find....mugs of mulled wine very welcome after a long walk at nearby RSPB Consall Woods.
Super food and friendly service.
G. H.
Great place after a walk in Cosall Valley. Well worth the visit. Friendly/professional staff and the beer was cold 😁
C. C.
Such a quirky place to have a drink, whilst sitting outside watching the Churnet Valley train passing full of waving passengers and listening to the waterfall! A very popular pub! Didn't have food this time but most people were having a meal so obviously good grub. Next time we're out this way, we'll do a walk along the canal to give us an appetite 👍😁.
R. L.
Covid cautions were excellent roast was average suggest you serv gravey separate or cut down on it we had a table on a slant and it was running off the plate when sitting eating in your Marquié it’s not nice having the next table smoking is it within t
P. S.
Well worth making the effort to find. Excellent real ale. Scotch eggs on the menu are delicious. Great to see the steam train and canal boats at the same time. Dog friendly.
R. R.
Quaint pub on the banks of the canal and alongside the chutney valley railway so you can see steam trains passing whilst having food / drink. Didn't eat on this occasion but what I saw others having looked decent pub grub, tried a Rhubarb cider which was really different and refreshing. Would definitely recommend on a summers day when you can sit out and enjoy the views
J. F.
Great pub lovely view .good beer and steam trains passing by if y lucky .
B. O.
Went with a party of 6 on steak night. T bo e was ordered by 2 Rump by 2 and fillet the other 2. All differently cooked but all came out very tasty. Fantastic choice of Ale and spirit's beautiful surroundings with an area to camp overnight
R. B.
Tasty hot pork sandwiches at a very reasonable price.
You won't stumble upon the pub unless you know it's there but definitely worth the visit!
Nice to see the steam trains passing by as well.
R. G.
Lovely little pub, always a warm welcome and thank goodness for its tiled floors, so close to Consall Valley Nature Reserve means most trips are accompanied by muddy boots! Today's visit was no different, but a pint and a plate of the cheesiest chips were very welcome.
H. C.
Brilliant little traditional pub in a very picturesque setting. Great good value food, helpfull landlord and staff. Warning: be prepared to wait as pub often gets swamped its so popular.
T. F. M.
Hidden gem on the outskirts of Stoke...Always worth a visit. Great selection of drinks and stunning setting
M. E.
Great little pub, nice food and cracking beers.
P. P.
An old favourite, good to see it back open, and plenty of customers. Its good to be back!
L. P.
Absolutely lovely. Stopped off for a bite to eat after a walk with my sister. Cracking beer and fabulous food. Can very much recommend the hot beef baps and the home made chips 👍
E. B.
Great pub serving a selection of real ale. Ideal for a summer drink as you can sit outside with a view of the canal. Very popular with families and dog walkers enjoying a summer afternoon in Consall.
There’s parking available on the other side of the canal for those driving.
L. H.
Friendly and helpful staff. Full of friendly people who just want to talk to you and help you out. A good selection of beer. Also the pub is a camra member. Food is served at lunchtime. The pub is dog friendly.
R. M.
A reall good canalside pub with a good choice of beer and cider. Excellent food and more importantly, excellent staff. Well worth the walk from Froghall.
l. b.
Absolutely stunning place. In the middle of nowhere, lovely to relax and have a pint. The food is lovely and is served in large portions. Staff are great. Animals wander around outside which is great food kids. Right next to a canal and very quaint with beautiful scenery.
P. P.
Lovely pub in a lovely setting good selection of ales and the best mega mixed grill
R. G.
Great place. Hens roaming around the outside tables. Excellent views. Great food and lots of it. Good atmosphere. AND a steam train going past every now and then. 4.5 stars for the train alone. Then there's a canal and lots of local footpaths. Lots of parking and no traffic going by. I must go again soon
C. W.
Stunning location, handling Covid restrictions well with a snack menu, beer delicious, local ice creams and dog friendly. Right on the Churnet Valley Railway so you can watch trains passing -check timetable though only running weekend and Wednesday- next to canal and surrounded by woodland walks. Beautiful day, thanks guys.
E. C.
Great service, well thought out to help combats the virus. Dogs welcome. Lovely surroundings. They sell beer what's not to like?
B. P.
Nice pub for a drink and watching trains go by. Walked down from nature reserve so a drink was welcome
I. M.
Excellent pint of Peaks tones Black Hole at 3.60 ppt not busy on a sunny Tues pm my local 42 miles from home
A. B.
A great pub with friendly staff and excellent food. Staying nearby with my family, we went for their Friday night curry night, and then back again for Sunday lunch. Both times we had a great experience. Well worth a visit.
K. W.
Great pub to visit during a hot day for an ice cold beer and a traditional Staffordshire oatcake lunch while watching the trains steam past and barges float by. Also serves decent evening pub food. Usually serves a selection of real ales. Could probably do with an internal revamp as it lacks warmth during the late evening so we tend to move on to the Black Lion in Cheddleton where it feels a bit more upmarket and cosy for a nightcap. Staff are always very pleasant and the owner is extremely friendly. Pub is not accessible for wheelchairs at the front due to a large step but you can use the side entrance.
T. C.
Went for the second time the other evening, what a great little pub. Really friendly people, good beer and a nice feel about the place. My new favourite watering hole.
W. H.
What an amazing pub .. Great food and beer and a location straight out of the railway children..
G. C.
Nice food great views
M. C.
Nice place..not bad food..the older man that waits on tables has a hygiene problem..in other words he doesn't smell very pleasant..friendly staff...but when serving the public I really think the cook should wear a hair net and hat..because hair in food is not nice as my other half found out..
S. T.
The queue for the bar was out the front door due to good weather. Staff very helpful re drinks choices. However, the ladies toilet outside was very blocked. Probably due to sheer number of customers.
F. 1.
Great selection of ciders and beers. Friendly staff and a stunning location by the Caldon Canal
G. D.
Disappointed. Love the setting, but a distinct lack of choice on the ale front sent me packing immediately. Assuming it's post-lockdown, but four pumps with no clips was a sad sight to see. Bombardier and Hobgoblin doesn't cut it for me, I'm afraid. 3 for the location.
D. M.
Fantastic place. Food is fab and the scenery is amazing. Staff are lovely and friendly.
S. N.
Nice pub set in a nature reserve next to a canal and steam train line. Food could of been better but price was ok. Good selection of beer
k. i.
Amazing location with great food, great ciders and watching the steam train going past while having lunch is an Unforgettable experience for our kids.
J.
Lovely country pub. Encouraging and well thought out safe distancing.
A good selection of real ale too.
Hope I can go again !
R. D.
Had a good visit during a walk around Consall RSPB. Lovely spot, good beer will definitely return.
D.
Perfect location for mid walk stop off
G. S.
Back when it's open, Consal Gorge just amazing 👌🔙
G. P.
what more can you desire in a country real ale pub? excellent food, ale and service at a location with a double water feature and a steam train service!

D. W.
So good to be able to go to the pub again.
Friendly staff, good food, well recommended.
I. S.
Great food as always, friendly staff and a beautiful spot. What's not to like.
G.
Excellent home cooked foods. Extensive range of beers and ciders, excellent location ideal for all. If you have never been i highly recommend, great friendly staff also.
M. F.
Friendly landlord, tasty food which is very good value for money. Beautiful surroundings.
E. C.
Absolutely excellent pub. Good food, well prepared, very accomodating team. We will be back. Only question: Why can I only give them 5 stars? They deserve more!
w. b.
It's a fantastic place. Such a lovely pint and the people are so friendly. On a hot day and sitting outside drinking a cold one. What could be better.
B. H. (.
Perched above the Churnetvalley railway and the confluence of The RiverChurnet and the cauldon canalThe Black Lion is a picturesque pub .Boasting popular keg ales as well as craft beers A lovely place to spend a summers day There is also regular function days throughout the summer months
A. B.
Traditional English boozer with good choice of beers and cider and the grubs not bad to 😋
J. J.
An excellent beer and cider selection; very extensive! And the pub has a great view of the vurner Railway, so a good place to watch the steam trains go by and stop at the station
D. G.
Went a stroll down memory lane. Not been here in 35yrs and to be honest, it hadn't changed much ( in a good way) great memories and great beer - will be back, hopefully not leave it as long
A. H.
Perfect setting by a canal & steam railway in a hidden woody valley..sadly not a great beer choice on this visit. Food basic but filling. Great for walkers and canal cyclists
G. S.
Great traditional pub - friendly service, hearty food, and great beer!
M. W.

t. d.
Great place proper ale
N. K.
A proper old fashioned pub in keeping with the railway at its front doorstep and the canal next to that. No pretension just good beer and pub grub. Don't expect sprinkles on your plate.
K. C.
Great pub in a lovely location.
By the canal and the churnet railway
R. B.
Amazing views, great food and drink, lovely staff.

Hi The Black Lion, I believe is well worth a visit. It is a little hard to get to by road easier to walk along the canal or Steam Train from Cheddleton or Froghall. It's a lovely pub witch you can sit in the sun and watch canal boats and steam trains go by and no cars to disturb you. We'll worth a visit.
R. H.
Great spot, bags of atmosphere.
Three ciders on the day we went: The Addlestones is excellent if you're not a hardened cider drinker, but my friend from Dorset assured me the others were "proper ciders, spot on".
R. D.
It's okay. Absolutely STUNNING location but on May Day the staff were disorganised and there were long queues for routine orders. Lots of people were sitting outside, many of whom had yapping dogs which ruined the beautiful setting completely for us. I presume on that day they had some kind of staffing let-down which is why I gave 3 and not 2 stars. Sorry!
J. O.
Lovely traditional canal side pub. Not changed in over 50 years. Good home cooked proper food. Will definitely go again x
J. B.
A bit of a trek to walk to but worth it
Food was good and friendly staff
C. J.
Great pub in a rural spot, we were there on a boat. Great staff serving good beer and tasty steaks.
D. H.
This pub is an absolute must if out on the canal or hiking. It's a real hidden gem with a good range of real ale and a home cooked food menu.
j. w.
Making hay while the sun shines
unfortunately comes to mind. Expensive lunch out, poor service resulting in cold food.
M. B.
An excellent pub and a really special location. Hard to find but definitely worth the visit. The steam train and canal outside are an added bonus. Would love to go back.
m. j.

Will use again and again.

Great to see the pub open again and back on the road to normality .
B. P.
I love this place. Sat by the fire, watching the torrential downpour bounce off the canal outside. Food was lovely! Only slight criticism is that the coffee isn't the best. Sorry haha
N. t.

S. P.
Visted the black lion for a quick stop off during our walk from froghall, the pint and the food was ok , minus the missing Apple sauce, the whole place would do with a good revamp and some money spending on it !!
The black lion could try alot harder ........3 out of 10
L. B.

Lovely , rural pub .
Near railway and canal
Good beer.
Whats not to like!
J. B.
Country pub beside the heritage railway with a wide range of craft beer on tap. Knocking a star off due to staff wheeling a cart around in desperate need of oiling causing an excruciating high pitch squealing.
R. T.
Warm welcome after walking from Consall Scout Camp on a very wet Saturday night in February. Both food and beer excellent.
m. 2.
Love it!
Great range of ales and forgetting waiting behind, gasping for one while the sensible, 'only a half for me please', taking up to 5 minutes to 'puruse' the ales on offer, then turns to the wife to ask what she bleedin' wants - only it never occoured to her before she entered...
Try and go out of season to reallly enjoy the place would be my advice
C. P.
