Reviews of Old Royal Oak
J. M.
If you’re looking for a pub with great stuff on tap, good live music, good atmosphere and don’t mind it being a tad busy on a Friday evening, a great pub to visit.
Prices aren’t too bad. Had a pint of the Royal Oak Bitter, came in a awesome looking glass, cost me £3.60. My Dad told me recently if you’re paying less than £4 for a pint of Bass in Burton, you’re doing alright.
So all in all, one of Burton’s standout downtown pubs for sure!

Centre of town, historic pub. Cask ales and larger. Wine and cider. Only bar snacks sold. Nice clean pub with dart board, live music and kenpo club. Well worth the visit.

Incredible pub. These owners know their gins, rums and beers. Biggest choice of gins with something for everyone. The staff offered recommendations throughout, each time offering something different. The rums again, different to what you will see anywhere. The beers were superb with a full mix from pales through to stouts. The pub does homemade pizzas which I will definitely be trying next time.
The pub is very clean and well presented inside.
This place offers something different to all the other places in Burton. I would recommend the pub and I will definitely be returning when next in Burton.

My favourite pub in Burton at the moment. Love the beers, fantastic brews by Fownes brewery, very drinkable, balanced, always spot on on the bar. Beautiful artwork on the pump clips! Went on Saturday to find out that they also do live music now, what a great night it was! Will definitely be going back.

Fownes beers, good crowd, clean tidy traditional pub

A mahoosive variety of beer, lagers and spirits, including, gin, whiskey and rums and a very knowledgable and friendly manager ... now started doing pizzas ... they are amazing

Not been in here for a couple of years, but a pleasant surprise of an entertaining band and a decent pint of bitter.
D. P.
Plenty of choices for an ale drinker, however, as a lager drinker just had two to choose from and they had run out of one of them . Don't do brand lagers, that being said, the pint I had was very lively and was nice and cold.

Fantastic place
Went on my own, made to feel like a regular the barmaid was so nice the owner so friendly the whole place had a great ‘feel’ to it. Plenty of drinks to choose… what more can I say .. oh yes the live music was fun and a wonderful addition to a great evening

CAMRA Pub of The Year 2022!!
Great pub with a friendly and calm micropub feel about the place!
Michelle the landlady will let you try before you buy from any of her fresh and tasty beers and ales! 😀 She also offers a loyalty card scheme, where you get the tenth pint free! On Thursdays if you are a CAMRA member, you can get 20p off for every pint bought!! 🙂
I popped in for early doors last Friday for a couple and got chatting to some lovely friendly regulars! ☺
See you again shortly!
Nigel 🙂

The pub was nice just did not like the selection on offer the 2 ok argues are n ok t nice and don't sell anything bottled

The beers at this place are SO good! There is a really good range so anyone who enjoys their beer will love this place, even lager drinkers have a few really good options the premium italian lager is a total winner!
Anyone considering having their stone baked pizza or garlic bread should definitely do so, we had four of them and they were all absolutely stunning! Service is great, really friendly and welcoming people, cannot recommend enough!

This pub is actually called "Olde Royal Oak" - the name alludes to the hanging tree in the adjacent market place where prisoners were executed in the 19th century. As patrons told me, the pub was part of the historic prison back in the day. As it is now, it's an okay boozer in the centre of Burton-on-Trent, nothing more. There's a tiny range of real ales on tap, along with the usual national and international lagers. The Sharp's Sea Fury I had was fresh, though. I did mind the deafening background music that was playing in the background when I visited in the middle of the day. Patrons turned out to be quite temperamental, too. Certainly not a first or even second choice among pubs in this nice real ale town.

Owned by Fownes Brewery from Brierley Hill with a full range of their own ales. Tried the UGA ( Upper Gornal Ale) and Rhyme of the Dwarfen Mariner...both very good. Pub felt a little tired but I believe work continues on improving the interior so maybe one to keep an eye on.

Love it! Michelle and Jeff make everyone, regulars to newbie, extremely welcome. Great variety of drinks - if you're not sure they will always offer very good advice. Many a great time spent there! Different things offered through the week - live music, pub quiz and much more!

Visited during the ale trail beer festival in Burton. Called back late last Saturday evening before closing and it didn't disappoint us. Found a lovely little brewery from Coventry in the process. We will be visiting again and can't wait for the Pizza Oven to get going and it will be a great venue for Burton. Gavin

If you love amazing ale (or the best spirits) our great country has to offer, then seek out the Old Royal Oak. 7 years ago Steve transformed our local in Leicester into the city pub of the year for consecutive years, a wonderful place to drink, with great people united by quality ale. No doubt he will do the same here, with a knowledge and passion for ale and food that's infectious and inspiring. Cherish him and what he and Michelle have created Burton, you lucky buggers......

Keep a very good beer, Various to choose from nice atmosphere. What more could you ask for. Not tried the Pizza yet. 🍕😁😁
J. M.
Reasonable prices and the only pub left in burton that plays rock bands and always has a good atmosphere! They also started serving Strongbow Dark Fruits and take card payments, so extra credit there!! Would definitely recommend
M. S.
Really friendly staff, great atmosphere and a good selection of gins and rums plus some fruity cider's. Would recommend the Purple haze cider.
A. G.
First time visiting the pub but went to see Indie Division play there as we had heard good things about the band. Tbh the band were average and the singer was a poor/embarrassing imitation of Liam Gallagher but the atmosphere was great which more than made up for the discrepancies of the band. Definitely going back and would even watch the band again.
A. M.
Only pale beers on today. All darks sold out after Burton Beer Trail at the weekend. Restocking tomorrow. Enjoyed the beers I could get.
D. B.
Good Craft beers, great service and one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Only wish pizza chief was there everyday.
K. W.
Lovely, welcoming place. Comfortable and really good staff that couldnt be more welcoming. Great cider and loads of real ales ❤
C. D. (.
I'd give it 5 if it was a tad bigger inside for you to move around without bumping into people... I was one of 130 people packed in there tighter than a Victorian Wenches Corset the other night. Good atmosphere, great acoustics for live music though.
A. T.
Good selection of beers and cider, cosy atmosphere and nice staff.
P. M.
Great ale, great friendly pub, and darts! Called in on the off chance and we were all very pleased that we did.
B. S.
Fabulous pub loads more new beers I've got to try next time
M. B.
Fantastic beers. Haven't tried the pizzas, but good idea. Only downside was it was a bit nippy.
J. W.
Nice and cozy bit small though friendly staff
A. B.
Good beer pizza menu cocktail
J. S.
Looks like it has closed again. Whilst the venue attracts customers on a band night (usually a Saturday), it is too quiet on the rest of the week, with little kerb appeal and reason to go in. Offering food to students may be an option in the future. Venues such as the Wyggeston do band nights better, so I'll be there in the future.

Found this diamond of a pub last night.. (18/8/18)..Great atmosphere..great people and the live music provided by a pre-teen rock band!! The lead guitarist is a star in the making!! Their backdrop said The Lost but can't find them..if the landlord or any staff could reply with the bands name I would be grateful as I'd love to book them for my grandaughters 16th birthday party..
K. B.
Great pub!! Always love to visit, very welcoming and great beer
S. P. C.
Great old burton pub only recently opened after closed for a long period. Definitely in need of a major upgrade and refurb but nice people in their now . Great prices on the drinks
j. w.
Great landlord, decent pint, good bands..... Staff need training on the bar, waited 15mins to be served while locals was walking up and getting served straight away!!!! Also double booking bands you turn up for one band and it's someone else than booked..... Easy to sort train the bar staff, outsource the diary.
