Reviews of The Rising Sun Country Pub & Dining Scholar Green
S. B.
Went for the Sunday lunch and this was lovely, choice of two meat and they did let us do half and half so had beef and turkey, both very nice. Children's menu - Ordered the fish fingers @ £8 which is expensive compared to other pubs for a kids meal. Don't get me wrong they were homemade fish fingers and tasty but a waste for a nearly 3 year old, too fancy just would be better serving something like a Birds Eye Fish Finger and charging less. Kids one scoop ice-cream £1.70. So in all children's meal £9.70 and other establishments do £4.95 for kids meal with ice-cream included so a lot more expensive. Would return but please review kids menu. Friendly pub and good staff.

Bar man checked his watch when we walked in... at 1:30. "You have just caught us!" Not a great welcome.
Pizza nice enough, vegan burger enjoyable, beer ok.
s.
Food was very nice, cooked quickly and beautiful presentation on it too. Dog friendly and with friendly staff, will be visiting again.
s. b.
Food is the best I've ever had, the chef deserves so much credit! Well above pub standards! Warm welcome and friendly staff. Very clean! The only thing I would say is please bring back the steak and ale pie to the main menu!
B. R.
The food here is INCREDIBLE! My partner gave me the job of finding a pub that did nice beer, good food, had a friendly atmosphere AND was dog friendly for tea tonight. The Rising Sun checked every box. The seafood chowder was absolutely amazing and honestly, I would happily have that as a main instead of just a starter. We both had the pie of the day, which was minted lamb pie. The meat melted in your mouth and the gravy was like nectar. I was so excited when they did me a little doggy bag of what I couldn't manage. We've left feeling so full and have vowed that we will definitely be back again! Couldn't have asked for more, the food was great, the staff were really really friendly and my partner got the really good beer that he wanted! Two (and a half - if you count the dog) very happy customers!

Nice pub atmosphere, lots of small rooms. Well run, car park is small but plenty of off street. Some ales on, great food, not too pricey. Try the Sunday dinner.
G. D.
Only bad thing for me was sat at the bottom of the pun near the kitchen was unbearably hot and didn't look like a window could be opened. Not losing stars over it as he experience made up for it.. Food was amazing staff friendly and helpful and the pub itself is very nice. Would recommend
B. S.
Amazing food! Lovely staff! Would reccomend!
P. S.
Just finished a beautiful meal. Proper home cooked food and very reasonable prices. Service was excellent and none of us could fault any part of the meal, even the 2 kids who can be very picky. Particularly enjoyed the home made strawberry shortcake cheesecake and mississippi mud pie. Thanks for a great meal, and we will be back.

Fantastic place
Food is amazing and staff are brilliant
Highly recommended 👌

We found this pub entirely by accident, the food is amazing and the staff are lovely! They were really accommodating with our baby too! The best pub roast we have had in ages! Will definitely be back!
A. H.

C. S.
Fab lunch today. Chicken stuffed with haggis. Lovely to have something different and beautifully cooked.
B. R.
Always a lovely warm welcome, great that I can take my dog & very nice food too.
C. F.
Lovely country pub ,in a nice peaceful surrounding Staff very welcoming, Very nice and smiley & friendly. Ordered 2 Roast dinners very nice, would av been better with real mash ,didnt realise until we ate it there was no yorkshire pudding, other than that got no complaints cleared the plate. Certainly would go again.

The Rising Sun is in our top five even though we are 20miles away. We had our first date here and have fond memories of various visits. Unfortunately this visit was disappointing, 45 minute wait and pastry on pie was inedible. Hoping it was a one off. It's a pub mainly for the locals. We haven't been put off so will definitely go again.
S. H.
Very nice and comfortable. Best the phone beforehand to have a table arranged. Good menu. Very flexible to total vegans. Everything well cooked and well presented. Very good value for money. Nice pub.
J. S.
Excellent food and service I would fully recommend.
C. M.
We popped in for lunch on the off chance. We were met by a friendly landlord who showed us sanitizer and then pointed us to a table.
A friendly and efficient waitress took our orders for food and drink.
The ale was first class and we both chose the Steak and ale pie. Every aspect of this lunch was fantastic. Very tasty, cooked spot on and presented well.
Pricing represents good value. Highly recommended.
M. B.
Very disappointed with the meals my husband and I had. The chips were more like wedges and weren't crispy and a few of them were not cooked through. It's a shame as we used to frequent this pub and the meals we had in the past were of better quality.
G. B.
Lovely pub. Great service, good CV19 measures and the food was superb - all nice and fresh too. Word of advice, the side of onion rings is enough for four people (and they are homemade!) :-D. Chicken satay skewers as a starter were amaaaaazing! Homemade burger was so juicy and is making my mouth salivate again just writing this 😁
P. T.
Lovely mothers Day meal for my mum. Thanks we will be back.
S. M.
Coffee and hit chocolate were fantastic staff were friendly and gelpfull
B. P.
Wonderful pub! Great food, beer and hospitality! Well worth a visit. Particularly easy to find and near to the Macclesfield Canal... so if on a boating holiday a trip, I would recommend stopping here!
S. H.
Excellent food, good service and a relaxed atmosphere. Great value too.
P. W.
My husband and I moved back to the area 3 years ago and have been a frequent diners at The Rising Sun ever since. The fact that we keep returning speaks volumes about the place. What keeps making us come back ? Well, in a nutshell - Great quality food, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings.
What I particularly like is the fact that the food is at a level well above ordinary pub grub, but you still get the pub atmosphere. The meals are of a high quality, very tasty and that notch above what you would normally expect in a pub setting. The chips are rightly famous for being so good (proper chunky ones) and the peppercorn sauce is the best I've ever tasted (and I've tasted a lot).
Prior to Covid we used for pop along, taking our dog with us, for Wednesday 2 for 1 burger night. My hubby adores the huge beef burgers and I love the fact that the chicken burger was a proper grilled chicken breast. Other times we have gone for a celebratory family meal and I can, hand on heart, say we have never had a bad or even mediocre meal. The food has always been excellent and plentiful. Nearly every time we have been we have been served by Dahna who is super efficient, friendly and always remembers that I want a peppercorn sauce on the side no matter what meal I am having.
We last ate there on 12/08/2020 and even through it is a restricted menu, I thought there was still a very wide choice of food. I have no hesitation what so ever in recommending The Rising Sun. Well done and thank you, we will see you soon.
B. B. W.
Great warm, friendly pub with lovely home cooked food. Nice menu, and close to the canal. Very much enjoyed.
J. P.
Has a lovely walk along the canal to the Rising Sun . Only been couples of pubs since reopened. Have to say they have got it down to a t. Track and trace how it should be done everyones name phone numbers and time of your visit spotlessly clean . Sanitizing excellent. Toliets organised well only one at a time. Friendly staff and really good beers. Well done all. Feel safe in your pub.
j. p.
Much better quality food than the famous nearby pub. Great place. Booking in advance is a must. But definately worth it.
C. W.
Went with my wife on a Saturday afternoon. Both of us had Steak and ale pie. Superb food. Nice atmosphere.
G. H.
Great friendly service 👌, and fantastic food 👍
.. N.
This pub was recommended to us by a work colleague for the quality of food served and it was well worth it. We were greeted & welcomed immediately and all the staff were attentive taking our drinks order although there was a delay with taking the food order for some reason. The game pudding with gravy was very tasty although by the end of the meal in my opinion I found the mustard overpowered the flavour of the meat which was a pity but I would probably try it again in the future. My husband had the pie of the day which was pork & apple and he enjoyed the thin pastry and the well seasoned filling as well as the selection of vegetables. If you like proper chips these were well cooked and definitely chunky and not at all greasy. The food was served piping hot which is how we like it, something other places could learn from. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for a dessert which was a shame as they looked equally enticing on the menu. The surroundings were clean and comfortable and I'm sure we will be back again, perhaps after a long walk!!
P. S.
We had the classic burger and was delicious. Well presented and very tasty. Served with onion rings and slaw and some chunky chips.
M. B.
living rather local we have started to visit quite regular after trying several pubs/restaurants in the area and have found The Rising Sun by far the best and most traditional serving excellent food and good beer.
The surroundings are traditional and homely and the staff friendly and attentive always making you feel welcome.
There is a little wait for the food but this is clearly down to being made fresh and is definitely worth the wait.
Highly recommend.
M. B.
Had Sunday lunch here and Wow!!!
Amazing meal and plenty of it. Superb value! Def coming back here again! One word..excellent.
A. C.
Love, love, LOVED it. The food here was gorgeous! I had the rump steak and it was cooked to perfection, to the point that you would have thought it was a sirloin. The staff are always friendly and it has a lovely welcoming feel to the place. Most definitely would recommend.
T. J.
Got to admit I was a little sceptical as I walked in, proper traditional pub but we had a steak and one of the pizzas, food was absolutely brilliant really tasty, Charla who looked after our service was lovely, really nice individual, will be returning, definitely recommend, thanks for a nice evening, see the photo of my pizza!
S. C.
Staff were fab, waitresses worked hard tonight as it was extremely busy.. If u want a village style pub true it's roots x excellent food then this is the pub to visit... You won't be disappointed. Had the Roast Beef, and wife had Brocolli & Stilton tart with a soup and prawn starters. We called in here when passing on a Sunday lunch time.
K. M.
Excellent food and service, especially as we arrived as a party of 8 with no booking. A couple of bowls of chips were delivered very quickly after we arrived to placate the little ones and the wait for our food was minimal considering how busy the place was. I ordered a burger and everybody else ordered a roast dinner. The food did not disappoint, a pub that we would drive out to again.
c. s.
The steak was amazing. Honestly one of the best steaks I've had in a long time for a reasonable price. The drinks are quite expensive and they don't carry a lot of the mainstream alcoholic beverages but it helps to keep out the riff raff. Staff are pleasant and helpful and the locals are a friendly lot. It's a good place to go for a quiet drink with friends/ family but definitely not somewhere for a 'night out'.
l. j. B.
Food was really nice, generous portions, home cooked food, traditional. But what topped it for me was the feel of the place and how lovely the food was. Staff were fab, waitresses worked hard tonight as it was extremely busy.. If u want a village style pub true it's roots x excellent food then this is the pub to visit... You won't be disappointed. X
E. W.
Staff were friendly and polite. Went on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of choice for food with some good deals on. Even the 'lite bites' were massive and the chips tasted homemade. I enjoyed the chicken bacon stack which was good value for money and tasted gooood
C. I.
Visited here twice now with my wife and baby, once on mothersday and then last weekend for lunch. Both times the food and service have been excellent.
The place has a traditional pub atmosphere, good selection or real ales and even a darts board.
The food is honest homemade pub food of a high standard. It doesn't serve frozen chips or pretend to be pretentious. Price are very reasonable too.
There pub is also by a canal path and has some nice surrounding walks. For those with dogs there is a small section to eat at, but you would probably need to book.
A. M.
Great Pub. With Excellent Beer, Food and Staff. Everyone is Welcoming and Friendly and it feels like a Big Happy Family. Wouldn't Hesitate to recommend this place and I'm puzzled as to why some people didn't like it or weren't impressed. Canalside pub with Real fires set in Beautiful Countryside. What more do you want 🙂🙂
M. V.
A country pub with a cosy, dog-friendly atmosphere. Excellent food and friendly staff.
S. B.
Visited here whilst out walking and had a meal for the first time on Sunday. Sat outside in the sunshine bit would be more than happy to go inside. Really impressed with Service and Menu and the food was beautiful. Staff all lovely and Covid measures re-assuring. Spotless inside. Will be returning . Thankyou.
J. M.
Friendly staff and excellent home cooked food. Try the seafood chowder!
j. b.
Great little pub... Great guiness and food.. Very friendly staff.. Well worth a visit
K. M.
Went in for Sunday tea, while travelling on the canal. Had the Roast Beef, and wife had Brocolli & Stilton tart with a soup and prawn starters. We called in here when passing on a Sunday lunch time. We hadn't booked, but we managed to get a table. We both ordered sandwiches and a portion of chips. The sandwiches were delicious, with plenty of filling,
D. B.
Good food and good real ales from the Marston's stable. Friendly atmosphere.
R. H.
Awesome food.. Unbelievable flavours.. Spotlessly Clean.. friendly staff.. Authentic food.. Its like eating at a friend's.. Kitchen open for all to see.. Passionate chef.. If you've not tried you gotta get down there.Checked trip advisor for recommendations, found this cafe only a mile away from the Hotel. Ordered a spicy beef salad which is hot not only with spice but heat, Chilli & Basil Prawns with Jasmin rice.
E. H.
Dined at The Rising Sun on Saturday evening. 4 adults and a 2 year old, we all had great food. Beef wellington was superb, my deconstructed beef bourginon was excellently executed. The front of house staff really looked after us and were accommodating with our 2 year old. Well priced food and drinks, the owner Wade came over and made sure we were all happy which was a really nice touch, I would highly recommend to all.
S. Y.
Well worth a visit. Never stop at same place twice on a return canal journey, but made the effort to do this one had steak on Saturday that was the best ever, so had to see if it was as good on return and it was, good selection of beers also, no signs from canal so look for bridge 87 and moor up its 100 yards away, staff are excellent, this pub ticks all the boxes. , well done to all involved.
R. S.
I played it safe and ordered the lobster bisque and the grilled chicken pasta with marinara, fresh mozzarella, and tomatoes. The side of creamed corn was to die for!!! It was very busy and had an older crowd. There's a more formal dining room, a more casual bar, and a deck. Found out the barn can also be rented out for special events, pretty cool.
K. O.
We visited here after it was recommended, we had a beautiful meal. Staff were friendly, polite and attentive. Prices are very reasonable for the standard of food. Food was of an exceptional standard. We would definitely visit again and would recommend!
M. L.
Visited here for the first time yesterday. We were immediately met with very friendly service and menus. Throughout our visit the service was efficient, excellent and friendly.
We have experienced Sunday lunch throughout the UK and we both felt that this was by far the best we’ve had.
It was great value for money and well worth the visit. We will definitely be going back!
N. M.
A welcome rest, after a long walk. Friendly and polite staff. Didn't have food but what I could see others having looked great 🙂
M. I.
Excellent beer..excellent food excellent service excellent value
J. W.
Although the food was quite nice well cooked was disappointed with the 50 minute wait for food and decided not to stay for dessert. If I lived local good friendly pub for drinking. This was booked for sentimental reasons for my daughter's 21st . But disappointed
L. R.
Food was good attentive staff cosy pubs
n. t.
Celebrated my mum's 70th birthday today New Years Day. Lovely room atmosphere Friendly staff food hot and home cooked chips were a big thumbs up. Thank you so much for making it a special day.We will defiantly be back.
J. T.
Really human and dog friendly pub very close to the Macclesfield Canal which serves a great pint and food. Recommended!
M. P.
Always excellent food here, and the beer's fine as well. The place has always been very busy when we've visited, and deservedly so. But that means that you will usually have a long wait for food after ordering. However, the food's worth waiting for, it's excellent. Try the mixed grill, it's the best one I've ever had. Beers' are from Banks's/Marstons, which reduces the choice, - no micro brewery products. But they're always well looked after. There's also a good choice of wines to be had. And the staff are superb. They're always very busy, but still find time for pleasantries.
N. C.
Top quality food and service, lovely atmosphere too.
J. R.
Amazing food, love it, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
M. H.
Another fantastic meal here. This is the 4th or 5th time we have been back and we were not disappointed. We went for pie night and chose the steak pie and the chicken pie. Both were generous with the meat. The fries were lovely but the garlic chiabatta is gorgeous. Especially with extra cheese. The waitress was great and service was class. Defo recommend.
r.
Excellent food good beer nice rural pub
B. M.
Best steak and ale pie going pastry is so light and thin . Gravy is gorgeous plus and it's a. Big + the gravy is served SEPARATELY. Yay. The fried sweet potatoe chips are to die for. The staff are friendly and helpful . Good portion s too lovely pub.
E. C.
Nice pub, friendly staff. Great food!
C. C.
Fabulous food, friendly staff
S.
Lovely pub with great hosts. Always made to feel very welcome. Food is excellent with a great selection of beers and wines.
N. T.
Looking for somewhere to have a meal with our daughter who is at keele university that allows dogs, absolutely fantastic pub, fantastic food and dog friendly in the bar area. I would advise to book! then after the meal a lovely walk down by the canal.
R. L.
A homely pub that is very much 'a local' in the truest sense of the word. I feel that it is in need of modernisation - it is somewhat dated and dingy.
T. C.
Went for a good walk today from my mates house in Mow Cop, down the Gritstone trail. We called here for a pint and received a very warm welcome, great beer at a proper pub. 👍
M. D.
Fantastic restaurant. As Birmingham continues to develop Bamboo should be the city standard for restaurant quality. Open restaurant/bar layout, great atmosphere, and excellent choice of entrees, appetizers, and sushi. Highly recommend for anyone in downtown Birmingham.
H. B.
A really fantastic pub, all staff were very friendly and helpful , the bar is dog friendly . We had lunch on the outward journey and dinner on the return, a salad and fish & chips its got to be the best pub food I've tasted in a very long time.
D. P.
Good choice for Sunday lunch. Close to little Morton hall which was our next stop and my wife could not fault the food or the service. They were clearly busy but managed to accommodate and do it with a smile.
C. N.
Had Sunday lunch at the Rising Sun with friends. Chose the pub from the Internet as Congleton is the mid-point between our homes.
We weren't disappointed !
Had the three courses which were very nice, each dish was good, I had the roast beef which was delicious.
The food was good, well presented, hot and served by friendly waitresses.
Overall the Rising Sun is a small, cosy and friendly pub and was well worth the visit.
The pub is set in a semi-rural area with a boat laden canal nearby.
J. G.
We began the day walking across the delightful plains of south Cheshire with our hound, only to stumble upon this delightful, quaint country pub. A nice selection of beers/ales, I didn't have the pleasure of tasting the food but it all look rather nice.
R.
Cracking portions, great food and booze.
With a lovely location, you just can't lose.
The pub was busy, the welcome was warm.
Just keep your head, when the crowds start to swarm.
J. W.
Party of four and we had 1 x mixed grill and 3 x beef Wellington. Have to say it was amazing and really good value for money, now we are the most awkward lot of people to cater for, was in this trade ourselves and this was what we aimed for, and we haven't found this anywhere else we have been So a massive well done you deserve it, we are from Stafford and was so worth the travel xxx we will be back plus Ive been dreaming about the beef Wellington, yes it was that good x
J. S.
Excellent food and real ales, friendly staff, lovely country pub and restaurant
P. W.
Walked in without booking and were found a table straight away. Good service and the food was excellent. The steak and ale pie is to die for, unfortunately there wasn't any room for us to try desserts ;)

Nicely located pub half a mile downhill from Mow Cop. They serve food and some interesting cask beers that were just what we needed after our walk up and back to Mow Cop. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the snack meal and beers weren't over-priced.
S. T.
This is a gem of a pub that provides amazing freshly cooked food, together with beers that are just perfect. The Landlord and his team are an absolute credit to their industry. I sincerely wish I could visit more often.
