Reviews of The King Charles House

Amazing bar with locals who are not afraid to talk to you. Plenty of history to keep you entertained, Rachel the bar maid is so welcoming and friendly and made our many visit extremely pleasant cant wait to come back in a few months time. Did not eat however the food looked really tasty 😋
B. D.
This is my favourite pub ever! Just wished I lived closer...beautiful building, friendly staff and the food is absolutely wonderful. Had vegetarian pie and garlic mash, and although it was a decent sized portion, it was so delicious I could have eaten another portion. Going here for lunch is always the highlight of our visit to Worcester. Can't recommend it enough
J. B.
Delicious pie and mash. Bit of a wait but then what do you expect when most of the other pubs in town were shut!
M. G.
Lovely pie, mustard mash, peas & gravy washed down with some fine real ale. Fantastically quaint old building too!
J. M.
The staff were very friendly and the pub has lots of character. The food was great too.
J.
Popped in for a swift half of cask ale and it was lovely! The cask ale selection looks fantastic and would have loved to try some more of their real true ales but my friend and I already had quite a few elsewhere so decided to call it a night...pity!
Beautiful historical building along with the inside and hopefully come back before we chug off on the River Severn.
Great staff, really welcoming and friendly.
Cheers to you all and you have an amazing pub worthy of reccomending especially to the boaters family!
L. P.
It was very quiet when we visited Tuesday lunchtime. Clearly the proprietors were not expecting many customers as no baked potatoes were available. My husband's pie and my panini were OK. The menu needs some changes as it smacks of a canteen and the pieces of paper should be destroyed after a customer's use.The building is very historic but it does need some sympathetic degree of refurbishment, particularly the furniture as the upholstery is very worn.
G. L.
Great pub with not one but two roaring fires. And a tasty range of pieminster pies.
P. T.
Lovely place, lovely pies, lovely beers, complementary sanitary products in the ladies toilets (advised by my partner) - open fire, although it was not punting out much heat (would have been tip top otherwise!)
R. M. S.
Nothing can beat The Charles King. A must visit.
B.
Very pleasant atmosphere in a historical building that screams quintessentially British pub. The beer selection is from craddock brewing which is not bottled and only served in 4 pubs. Great place to eat a meal or just pop in for a few cheeky pints.
D. E.
First time I've visited in nearly 6 years and the standard hasn't dropped at all. Great pies and selection of ales, friendly staff and good service, always highly recommended.
G. D.
An authentic proper boozer, with the kind of charming decor that you rarely see anywhere. Nice staff aswell as customers. This was my first time here but will certainly make a bee line for it next time I visit Worcester.
A. K.
It is a joy to sit in this very historic pub. The bar staff apear to be nice and friendly, and the food looked nice. I am looking forward to my next visit.
S. O.
Best traditional pub in Worcester. Had the pie and mash, probably one of the best I have had!. Good selection of ales and pub snacks aswell. If you are visiting Worcester on a day out then I suggest you try this place!
J. H.
Fantastic place oldest pub in Worcester I believe serves the best pies and mash. Quirky place worth a visit
R.
This is just one of the best pubs in Worcester for beer with a historical vibe built in for good measure! Craddocks beer served is excellent and if you are lucky to catch somebody decent playing the piano, you can find yourself lost in time drinking the best beer and creating great memories!
E. E.
Very good service n nice old pub. Pies was ok but that’s all they have really.
S. H.
Friendly helpful staff. Good beer. Excellent food. Interesting establishment.
S. J.
Proper Olde Worlde pub. Friendly staff & a building Full of Character. Dark & Dingy if you go for Chrome & Spotlights otherwise, Atmospheric, Oozing Originality, a bit of imagination & you can 'see' the Royalists of yore huddled in groups whispering their deeds & doings. Step back in time & momentarily leave the modern City of Worcester. If you're into Real Ale,... take a taxi & take advantage of the many ales on draft.
A. D.
On a busy Friday night...a great place to avoid the usual city crowd. A warm fire, good food and a great welcome.
C. N. H.
Good atmosphere and a good selection of none traditional drinks on tap.
T. P.
Lovely old pub in the centre of Worcester. Good selection of ales.
K. L.
Nice little pub , prices reasonable. Lovely old fireplace, will be very cosy in winter.
A. M.
Warn friendly bar good Ales.A very pleasant drinking experience
K. K.
Craddocks ale on tap, real fire always on in the winter, great atmosphere and a friendly old pub on New Street.
A. L.
Only went in for a beer, had a pie and mash a few years ago which was lovely, a few of us are gona go for a meal in a couple of weeks so fingers crossed its as good as it used to be.
B. C.
Fantastic pies, friendly staff and a massive choice of gins and ales. Very quaint, old world style pub.
I. M.
Lovely old pub with a great range of real ales
R. F.
Lovely home cooked food real fire well worth a visit
J. H.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly locals and warm fire to relax by.
N. R.
The pies are out of this world amazing!! Great historic pub, with lovely and friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble. Great selection if ale and local ciders too!
B. G.
Fantastic pub with so much history attached to it. Staff so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely go back again
S. 8.
What a pleasant surprise. The food was very good. They specialize in pies. My sister had the steak and ale pie which was delicious and obviously handmade. I had the ploughman's sandwich which had local artisan cheeses and 'real sliced ham', the one my grandmother served. The staff were friendly and efficient. The decor was old Tudor. It's obviously a local and a visitor destination. Two thumbs up.
K. C.
Could do with more staff, but a nice atmosphere, cosy and the staff that are there are very pleasant. Yes would recommend and would go back.
L. N.
Me and my fam went last night for some pies and a drink. The staff are great. The pub is beautiful. Food is so so so good and the drinks are brilliant. Please go support this lovely pub. It's a must if your if you're in Worcester. They have vegan options to!
C. N.
Great place for food and lovely selection of ales 👍
E. “.
Great pub, serves the best pies too!
M. G.
An old pub with good beer. Full of oldies like us. Enthusiastic landlord.
D. R.
Unusual pub in a good way it's like going back in time in a very good way
It's a pub that I think everyone should experience
M. C.
Amazing food, great service and a really good range of drinks.
H. J.
Friendly staff, good drink selection and great atmosphere. One of my favourite places to go. Historic and picturesque
j. y.
Character pub but beers average
Worth a visit for the character and history. Didn't try food. Craddock beers.
S. f.
A proper pub great food great drink highly recommended!!!
N. M. (.
Nice and friendly place. Best place for Pint and Pie.......
A. S.
Large selection of ales. Log burner at the of the bar very welcoming.
c. h.
As always these guys were fantastic. Lovely no nonsense good pub food. Range of pies with mash, sharing plates, sandwiches, and a few salads. We had a beef & beetroot salad, a pie and mash, a pint and a soft drink for under £25!!!
Good range of beers- more than 6 real ales, a few proper smooth beers, lagers and ciders. Even on new years day they were nice, pretty friendly, served good beer and good, and had a bonus fire on the go.
S. G.
Great pub in an old historic building. Really worth a visit... Oh and have a pie
H. B.
Awesome food! Beautiful pub with lots of atmosphere. It's just always cold! Despite the fire being lit, every time I go in I need a thick jumper. Staff friendly and still love the place.
L. G.
What a quirky old school pub! Loved it! Good beers and staff are great. I didn't realise at the time I was sat drinking on top of which seemed like a dungeon? The barstaff will happily show you (under the rug by the fire) and give a little history background on it, great fun for the kids to see.
J. A.
Absolutely loved it in here. I visited recently for drinks and a pie with some colleagues. The pie was absolutely to die for, and the variety of ales on tap and in bottles/cans was fantastic!
The pub has a great deal of history (King Charles was shortly resident here after fleeing the lost Battle of Worcester to Oliver Cromwell in 1651), so it's a great place to visit if you're touring Worcester.
I will definitely be visiting again!
B. L.
Excellent well kept real ales in a historic pub
S. N.
Visited here on a day trip to Worcester from London. Was advised to try the Cardinals Hat in the old town on the same road but it didn't open till 12 so I continued along the road & found this place. Fabulous beers (that I'd not heard of before, a local brewery called Craddocks). Pieminster pie, mash n peas was lovely, staff super friendly, decor & history very intriguing. I intended to head back to the Cardinals hat but never left this place. Arranged this pub as a meeting spot as its kinda midway between Manchester & London, as I know my friends will love it.
a. w.
Cracking historic ale house. Not only 8 different ales & 2 ciders but tasty pies with mash. Recommended!
D.
Staff are really friendly here and the pub has some great character and history. A really nice place to drink with a good selection of different beers and cider. Also serve some delicious food such a pies and scotch eggs, on my recent trip I had some chilli nuts which were really nice as a bar snack, very spicy and lots of different types of nuts. Would really recommend this pub for a drink and a bar snack.
M. E.
The King Charles House was everything I wanted for a lunch time pit stop. They serve a very well kept selection of cask ale. The food menu is simple, but brilliant. I had a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with beef, mustard mash and gravy, with a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlors to wash it down. Perfect.
P. B.
Best pub in the world. Bar none(sorry). This is as good as a cosy winter drink gets. Great beer, cider and simple menu. To describe the atmosphere think the prancing pony from Lord of the Rings. Outstanding.
J. B.
Great history of the pub it never began life as a public house, but now it is fantastic. Lovely food and a great choice of real ale and some nice ciders to. Friendly staff too. Nice and relaxing atmosphere can't fault this bar top drawer
T. T.
Great pies, possibly the best I've ever had and coming from a man raised in Wigan, that is a big statement. Great filling(steak n ale or 'Moo' as it is called on the menu), cracking pastry, great mash, great choice of ales, great service.......we will be back!!
B. C.
Always a cracking pint of beer friendly atmosphere
K. C.
We loved it here! An array of real ale (£3.40 a pint). And THE PIES!!! OMG delicious! I had the 'Mr Kevin Vegan' and my husband had a chicken and ham pie. Both served with mash, gravy & Peas. Excellent value at £9.50. We are tourists to the area but will definitely visit here again before we return home.
G. S. C.
Fantastic pub with some fabulous ales and ciders . The Pie and mash is a must. If you get the chance take a look at the wood carving and also warped upstairs floorboards. But the absolute must is the holding cell under the pub. This is where they kept prisoner's before being taken to the square for hanging. The cell is bricked up now so viewing is through a grill under the trapdoor in the bar area.
R. K.
We went in as a 4 on a Saturday lunchtime. They have a good range of pies with 6(!) different mash options and mushy or garden peas. There was also a number of other options such as salads and light bites. They are clearly known for their pies though.
The bar staff were friendly and courteous and the food arrived in a reasonable period of time (about 10-15 minutes). It is traditional pub food so if you are expecting gourmet service then you will be disappointed. For a pub the service is good and the food was really good. The only downside was I hadn't realized it comes with gravy, so if you don't want gravy just ask when ordering.
R. F.
Great pub with good food and banter. Get the pork platter.
M. W.
One of my all time favourite Worcester pubs
M. R.
Great decor, atmospheric and historic pub with excellent choice of ales
j. h.
A beautiful old pub. They have a large selection of ales from Craddock Brewery and offer a range of food options. The Pieminister pies with peas and mash are fantastic! Well worth a visit. I love the place.
G. D. L.
We live this pub.
The charm of the historic half timbered construction and it's history, plus the large selection of real ales and ciders.
Its award winning pies are scrumptious and worth the visit alone.
If you can manage to locate yourself next to the log fire on a cold day as we did, a few days ago, makes for a pleasant and enjoyable experience, plus speaking with other fellow drinkers about issues if the day is what it is all about.
j. h.
Really good food and an interesting building as well
J. J.
Really old place lots of heatige. Friendly staff.
D. H.
Nice old worldly and intresting place to visit with fine beers
P. R.
A really nice looking pub in an old historic building. Very kind and helpful staff. Beer from owners brewery ok, nothing special but decent ales. Famous pies come from supplier and are only wormed in the pub. I chose Aragorn with garlic mash. Did not taste any garlic there and the bacon that should have been in the pie had dissolved totally. Really disappointing meal.
A. F.
Classic old Worcester pub with a great history. It's like steppi¡g back in time!
Friendly staff and happy to talk me through their decent selection of locally brewed real ales.
The upstairs is beautiful but extremely wonky! If you suffer from vertigo or balance issues maybe stick to the ground floor. It's so wonky in fact our first round of drinks slid off the table before we even got our coats off! They were replaced without question by the bar staff who admitted "yeah that happens a lot in here!"
Well worth a visit.
S. B.
Lovely pub which does a great line in pies.
Get there early though at the weekend as the best ones sell out!!
Great selection of what looked to be local beers as well
C.
Not too easy to walk past this place and wonder what's inside.
Well, an excellent range of cask ales and plenty of history. Window seats allow you to sit chat and watch the world go by. Deeper in you get cut off from the world.
Staff were really helpful as all the beers were new to us and we ended up having two more than we'd planned too!
B. R.
Fabulous pies, friendly staff, great ales, well worth a visit.
P. j.
Lovely old pub the beer is spectacular and the food is sensational I love it there the people are welcoming the staff are great. Best of all they have log fires and on them cold days or evening it's nice to have a pint and chill out buy the fire.
P. R.
Spent a great Saturday afternoon here enjoying the local beer and hospitality
C. U.
Nice pub with a good selection of drinks and snacks. It's best known though for its pies which are definitely worth a try. The atmosphere inside is usually calm and the aesthetic is traditional English pub.
C. G.
Great pub. Real choice of ales. Knowledgeable staff who are happy to advise and let you taste beers. Real pies too that are apparently great, although I didn't try one on this visit.
D. J.
Great pub with its very own oubliette! Ask the bar man to show you it and if you're brave enough climb down into the dungeon. I stand as the second person to have escaped unaided! The bar man even gave me a free pint! Made my night. Fantastic pub!
D. S. P.
Beautiful old watering house with plenty of history to it. Great selection of ales, cider and larger etc. Attentive friendly staff at hand. Plenty of room from cosy corners to more social group areas. Highley recommended if you like a good old pub.
D. F.
Amazing pie menu. Good selection of choices, really tasty, fantastic pastry and fillings and excellent value for money. Also the pub has a great selection of craft beers and local ales
C. H.
Great choice of real ale and wine. The pies served are superb with plenty of choice and are very tasty. Beautiful old building with original beams and full of history.
K.
This is a great place for pie- even caters for vegan and vegetarian and meat eaters with choice of flavoured mashed potatoes and peas to go with your pie. Real Ale lovers will like the choice available.
P. M.
If you like a pint of real ale and a pie this is the place for you. A splendid choice of pies with a variety of types of mash and either garden or mushy peas and a wide selection of real ale from Craddocks brewery to accompany it. And not overly expensive either!
C. W.
Great little pub with a lot of history and a decent selection of ales (or so I'm told). They do kraken rum which is good enough for me and at a fairly decent price. Foodwise, they do Pie Minister pies which are great, particularly the Moo&Blue. Excellent pub quiz here most Tuesdays at about 8:30pm.
P. M.
Very good range of Ales. We only called in for a quick drink, but ended up having a brilliant meal! Excellent company on the socially distanced tables.👍
M. B.
Oldy wordly friendly pub
r. b.
Excellent city centre pub and excellent range of beers
A. D.
The Pies are as good as legend will have you believe. Great range of Real Ale as brewed by Craddocks.
C. S.
Wonderful untouched pub, so many olde worlde pubs are touched up these days with grey paint. This one is still as it was and should be. Like all the Craddocks pubs this is cosy and relaxing. Great selection of ales.
M. T.
Quaint little pub in the centre of Worcester surrounded by the few remaining Tudor houses on New Street. This is an old fashioned pub with rich history that has kept its identity and remains a favourite among locals. A good selection of ales and ciders are usually available and the King Charles specialises in pies if you're hungry. During the winter they have log fires going and patrons are free to bring their dogs in. You could probably sit in this pub for hours on a cold day; recommended!
M. C.
Fabulous pies and good considerate service
C. C.
Historical pub from 1500s where King Charles hid after he lost the English Civil War to Cromwell & before he fled to France. Good pies from Pieminister & decent selection of traditional ale & beers for a cozy & traditional night out in Worcester.
m. a.
Nice pub with good range of food, honey coated peanuts are great.. But it has a very low beam just above two steps.. Head banging time.. Ouch! Needs a sign.. Low beam!
L. C.
Very old city centre pub. Said to have been King Charles I HQ during the English Civil War. Black & white Tudor exterior and old original wood & lime plaster interior with leaded windows. A bit of a rabbit warren inside, but to be expected as it hasn’t been altered too much from the original layouts. Large selection of ciders and beers. Food served here as well. As my visit was during Worcester’s Victorian Fayre, I did not notice if there was a beer garden. Will update this review once I find out otherwise! Well worth a visit for the history alone.
b. b.
Great place to chill , great beer and ciders , had a ploughman's lunch the other day and had to share it , great food and nicely presented , try if you haven't been , your missing one of the best old pubs in Worcester ! Staff knowledgeable and friendly
a. u. (.
Great old fashioned pub - not enough of these around anymore. particularly enjoyed board games and piano! staff very friendly too!
A. D.
A lovely venue, a wide variety of different guest ales + all of the usual. Some of the best hot pies cooked in house .
S. C.
Beautiful old pub full of character. Sells a good selection of beers, great bar snacks (scotch eggs from the handmade scotch egg company) and amazing pieminister pies!
B. C. v. B.
Pie minster pies, you know: Moo and Blue, Kate and Sidney, er, something about Heidi... 1) choose a pie with a comedy name, all actually more or less sensible pie options, 2) pick your mash, chili, garlic, horseradish or plain, 3) peas mushy or garden. Then eat, with good beer or cider, to satisfaction. The downstairs is good, proper olden days, pre-spirit level vibe. Nice.
J. H.
Always a good place to meet friends, have a choice of great drinks and order a brilliant pie and mash. Long time and continuing favourite pub in Worcester.
D. H.
Excellent service and quality - staff are knowledgeable and attentive. The Troll pie is to die for - absolutely scrumptious. Highly recommended - you'd be hard pushed to find better fare...
