Reviews of Crown & Cushion
J. S.
Qwerky pub on the main street.
We had Sunday Lunch after doing a 4 mile walk around Castle Howard. Food was great ,staff very attentive and pleasant, would of being nice if fires were lit, but it was a mild day, definitely recommend
F. L.
Modernised pub, with period features near Castle Howard. Starters of fried Brie and vegetable soup (pictured) were great, as was the steak and ale pie (pictured). The fish pie (pictured) mash and sauce were seasoned well, but the fish wasn’t flakey and the prawns were rubbery. They’d also run out of hot chocolate, which for February isn’t great. Other than that service and servers were good.

After walking in the Howardian Hills we stopped here and were lucky enough to get a table outside in the sun. We were also lucky enough to visit in the launch day of a new menu. Very high quality menus and food to match. Very friendly staff and a well run business. Will definitely visit again.
W.
I had a really good, tasty lunch here.
See photo. Lovely chicken slices on home grown salad and dressing.
N. S.
Nice pub with a good old style decor. Very friendly staff. Will call in again next time we are over that way
M. Z.
Absolutely wonderful place to eat. Sunday roast was great, Beef, Pork, Chicken spot on. Yorkshire pudding fresh and crispy, roast potato's golden and fluffy. Veg and gravy faultless Absolutely delicious puddings, staff are so polite and nothing is too much trouble, definitely recommend highly. 👌
D. W.
Delicious meal booked at the last minute (30 mins before) as we were let down on our Golden Anniversary. Our server was very attentive and the food was perfectly cooked, hot and obviously made using quality ingredients. It’s not the first time we’ve enjoyed eating here and it won’t be the last!

I was staying in Welburn on business for a few days and had the pleasure of four visits to The Crown & Cushion. The pub was warm and welcoming with a roaring log fire, but the welcome from the team was even better! By the end of my time in Welburn, I felt like an old friend. Thank you to all the team for great hospitality and making myself, colleagues and my labrador Mabel so welcome. The food was delicious and the service attentive. Hope to be back before too long! x
G. B.
Lovely food and lovely team serving too, with a great selection of drinks.
B. S.
Brilliant food but service very poor in my opinion. Don't want to hear managers moaning about other staff while I eat and setting tables up around us while we eat not great as open till 11 felt like they were trying to get rid of us and it was only 9pm
S. I.
Absolutely loved my first visit here. Friendly welcome chilled put kind of vibe. Food was excellent. Staff friendly and professional. This place was 10 out of 10. For me. I was made to feel very comfortable and the fact I had a young dog was just no problem. Cant reccomend enough. Worth every penny
Great venue. Great food, great staff.

Just popped in off chance and loved it. Drinks not over priced, food great and staff very welcoming.
Definitely going back!
M. E.
Felt very welcomed..we were very well looked after. Excellent steak and ale pie..with interesting accompanying vegetables..and a delicious glass of cabernet sauvignon
A. C.
Met friends for a meal. Good service, beer and food. A slight problem was soon sorted and a free beer was given for the inconvenience caused. Overall a good experience.
S. O.
A Beautiful cosy pub in Welburn near Castle Howard. Called in for food after a visit to the nearby Historic House and wasn't disappointed. Lovely food and very welcoming towards Children and Dogs. Apart from the interior there's a wonderful outdoor covered area that I should imagine is wonderful in warmer weather. Well worth a visit
EDIT: Second visit after visiting Castle Howard. Still absolutely excellent 👌
J. K.
The quality of the food more than justifies the more expensive bill (go to wetherspoons if you want cheap). The Korean wings were fabulous and the steak wonderful. £130 for four is not outrageous and surroundings are wonderful. Definitely returning. Special mention to the new barrel of Theakstons which was better than the one I got at their brewery in Masham!
D. B.
Our 1st visit here & look forward to returning. Lovely lunch & friendly staff in very soon comfortable surroundings
M. M.
Good food, make sure to book around the weekend. Busy so service wasn't very quick but understandable.
A. K.
Stopped for lunch while holiday traveled. The quality of food and service exceeded our expectations. Very nice place. Recommended
P. B.
5 Star - We visited today for a late lunch / dinner - not knowing the closing times
Food was superb - as was the service, the staff were really friendly (one knew the whole beer menu off by heart) staying at a campsite up the road - this was a delicious meal, in good surroundings- its a shame that we will go back home in the week, and might not get chance to visit again. Highly recommend.
S. R.
Good food, lovely atmosphere and staff.
Great beer. Coming back 👍
M. S.
My family booked a table to celebrate my 70th birthday with 10 guests. First ever visit to this establishment and were we impressed. It was a busy Sunday lunch period but the staff were amazing and soon got us settled and seated and they had even helped to decorate the table with family requests. The meal was just beautiful and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Wonderful atmosphere and can recommend a visit.
S.
A very good experience. All of the food was well cooked and tasty. Great that you can take your 4 legged friends. The staff were very friendly, with just the right amount of attentiveness. Good range of wines by the glass/500ml carafe.
J. F.
Excellent food, good service, will definitely visit again.
A. M.
Fantastic evening with brilliant food. Staff were lovely and friendly!
W. B.
The staff and Crown & Cushion were very good and the meal even better.
1st class would recommend.
l. c.
Beautiful chateaubriand and scallops for starters, service was excellent and couldn't fault a thing will definately be back!
A. I.
Lovely location , lovely food and friendly staff not much more you can ask for really .
J. S.
Needed somewhere to eat after dropping daughter of at rehearsals. Not from area, and this is first time here. Great staff, great food, highly recommended.
A. T.
We have just had our Christmas lunch at the Crown and Cushion and what a fantastic meal. Chef Chris and all of the staff in the kitchen put on a truly memorable meal. Everyone at the C & C were so kind and helpful.
We were so impressed that we booked our Boxing day lunch. Yet again an absolute delight of a meal. Many thanks to all and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Meanwhile a very happy New Year to you all,
thankyou.
J. M.
Me local. A good pint and lovely food. Great staff and great service. x
G. S.
Stylish decor nice food only problem caramelised peaches we're not caramelised waiter said chef couldn't do it
T. C.
Nice pub, good service, below average food.
We had the lunch menu, which we expected to be “light” but were disappointed with the tiny slither of dry, reheated lasagne and slice of stale ciabatta, no garnish or any culinary style. Not good value at £12. The staff responded well to our feedback and offered a free side dish.
E. H.
Popped in this afternoon for lunch with my parents who travelled down from Newcastle to visit. We were all so impressed by this pub, the service was extremely friendly and the food was just divine. We’ll definitely be back!
M. G.
Super village pub serving excellent choice of tasty food. Great choice of drinks. Friendly staff. Live music and pub quiz plus other events starting June 2022.
C. E.
We visited today on our way home from a day out shopping, we were not disappointed.
The food was absolutely amazing. Everything cooked to perfection with lovely presentation.
The staff were fab and so polite. They were brilliant with my 13month old son, which just made dining out with a baby even easier.
Bonus points for even having dairy free ice cream which not many places have.
We will definitely be going back when out that way again.
K. T.
Another fabulous meal at the Crown & Cushion Welbourne. We love to go for a meal & drinks when we go to our holiday home . We drop our bags and make it our first stop good food & drinks and staff are always happy to help . Xx
m. g.
Great village pub with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Good choice of excellent food from a varied menu - specials board too. Large choice of drinks. Kids menu. Plenty of parking.
H. B.
A cosy pub, lots of horse themed art on the walls. A good selection of drinks, a mention for the Black Sheep ale....
T. S.
Excellent food and ambiance from this pub. A definite repeater.
D. D.
We had a excellent meal with friendly service
C. L.
Unfortunately our recent visit to the Crown and Cushion was a bit of a disappointment. On a cold January night the log burner was not lit and the staff were not very attentive. The food was good overall but they were missing one of the 2 vegetarian options and the pies were not available. Could be a really good pub but right now they need to work on the front of house.
S. H.
Great food and staff, happy and friendly local clientele
C. S.
Sat in the rear garden area where the tables were very socially distanced. We had the cod and hake both were lovely followed by the chocolate fondant which was definitely worth the short wait for it to be cooked fresh. We found the staff friendly and service quick for a Wednesday evening at approx 6pm.
J. T.
Really nice traditional village pub. Really busy when we called in on our way to Whitby, but lucky to find a table. Even though short staffed, an efficient team served our delicious lunch in about 30 minutes and were friendly and attentive. Definately be calling back in on the way back home.
H. W.
Had drinks and some lunch was really enjoyable. Service was just right, cost very reasonable. Order arrived timely and all correct. Surroundings were fabulous; lovely food and drinks made for a really nice place to spend part of the afternoon. Welcome another visit to this pub/restaurant.
P. R.
Excellent lunch stop on our walk from Kirkham Abbey. Both meals we had were freshly made and very enjoyable. There was a good selection of meals, service was pleasant and pricing good value for the quality.
M. H.
Great food excellent customer service would highly recommend this little gem can't wait to go back
J. D.
Lovely pub and staff. Social distancing taken seriously and hygiene high standards.
The steak pie was delicious but the cod was disappointing due to the tiny portion size. Should have sent it back when it was presented to me but instead decided to mention it to the bar staff when paying the bill and was told she would pass on my comments to the chef and thanked me for informing her. Overall a lovely pub but would chose carefully from the menu.
k. e.
Thank goodness I do not live locally, otherwise I would be here every week, and probably about 5 stone heavier. An excellent menu of good pub grub.
J. W.
Excellent service. Food was really good too
B. F.
Disappointed - very nice young staff, lovely pub, nice beer but very disappointing food. Burger overcooked, brioche bun crispy as badly defrosted, returned very limp lettuce to the chef in return for some fresh. Could not believe someone actually chose to put it on a plate rather than in the bin.
Complained Sticky Belly Pork tough - requested steak knife to cut and crackling was inedible. Chef advised it was supposed to be like that! When asked when paying whether we were happy with meal we said not but were still charged full price.
3 stars is being very generous.
C. 8.
You will definitely not be disappointed. Delicious food in incredible setting - what's not to like ! The Manager runs a tight ship and the customer service is excellent. They work so hard to make your visit special. Thank you all - we'll be back soon.
M. D.
Lovely place, great staff, great food, good Guzzler
L. U.
Good quality food, lovely country setting and reasonably priced
K. H.
This is an idyllic place for a meal ,food was excellent and the service was excellent would highly recommend this place even if its off the main rd.
A. M.
We had a family meal here, took the Covid social measures seriously with one way systems in place etc.
The staff and food was lovely, pleasantly surprised but one thing that really took the shine off was the extremely slow service.
Whilst I understand and appreciate if things are cooked from scratch it takes time, but communication is key, staff and chef will know how long meals take, so would expect to be told. It wasn't overly busy so I sure why the issue.
Also point of note, serve the kids first rather than last.
Overall would recommend this great place just expect a good hours wait from arriving to eating.
M. B.
Friendly staff on arrival showed us to a booked table in the bar so we could bring our dog in as well. Had a bit of a wait for food but didn't mind as worth waiting for. Lovely beef pie, mash with veg and a chicken salad and fish sandwich were very good. Booking is essential. Has a lovely beer garden to try another time.
J. C.
Fabulous food, beautiful pub, nice staff but really cold. We all had to sit and eat with our coats on. Apparently the fires don't get lit till December.
A. W.
Fabulous food and service, dog friendly too
M. P.
13.00 hrs Easter Sunday. First visit. Friendly & helpful staff in Nice country pub. Sunday Roast - excellent.
J. H.
Great service & drink selection in a beautiful setting
D. H.
A wonderful afternoon spent commemorating what would have been my mother’s 100th birthday. Sadly she wasn’t there to share it, but 3 generations of her family met in your wonderful restaurant and we had an amazing time. Our hostesss Cat, was absolutely amazing. Nothing was too much bother, the food was superb and everyone had a super time, from the 60+ to the wee babies . We will certainly return. Thank you again x from all our family
M. I.
We had pleasant evening with family at the c&c. Just a couple of comments.....butter straight from the fridge-schoolby error. Only two choices of adult alcohol free drinks, it would be nice to see an alcohol free wine and a gin on the menu.
D. B.
Excellent food, great service, and very friendly and prompt. A wonderful selection of food options for both adults and kids - the chocolate brownie was very well received by the younger member of the table!
A. P.
Food very good. Lovely staff working under considerable pressure as we were a huge group.
R. J.
Had our first meal out as a family this year and it was mostly good. Wife had the lamb and it was just ok, we don’t mind a small portion if it packs real flavour which it didn’t. I had the special £15 Yorkshire burger which featured Yorkshire yagyu a blue cheese rarebit and Henderson’s relish, it was very disappointing it was so small I thought it was my sons burger off the children’s menu so I passed the plate to him but then his turned up (the same size) couldn’t taste any cheese and the bread was sweet but dry and claggy! No room to fit my side salad and relish on top! Kids meals were good. Then we had the sticky toffee pudding chocolate brownie (cold) which were great. I had the cheese board which was very poor, cracker has zero taste, cheese was offensively small, and two of them had no flavour whatsoever! Service was very good though so overall had a nice evening just think the food needs some attention. Thank you
S. l.
Oh my goodness, had an amazing vegan meal today, other half had roast beef, staff are wonderful !!!
N. S.
Nice outdoor area, good selection of beer and dog friendly. Didn't eat.
E. B.
Nice food and good, polite service. Thank you.
B. H.
Great pub, food was superb all served up by friendly professional staff. Only little negative was the wait between courses.
K. M.
Lovely food and great ale (Black sheep). Kept well apart from other customers and carefully served our meals. A great effort by all the staff.
R. S.
Lovely pub food, nice atmosphere
H. D.
Lovely pub in a picturesque location. Great at the end of the Castle Howard 'Blue route' walk. The food is wonderful and great service. Couldn't fault
T. H.
Excellent sandwich and beer, great staff, very helpful and friendly...still good (15.03.22), lot more busy so would recommend booking, staff are great, would recommend.
6/6/22 Went again for dinner, great brisket lasagne, still v good...
J. M.
Best food we had on our trip to the Ryedale area, nicely styled in the cute village of Welburn. Well worth the slight detour for an excellent steak and ale pie.
S. T.
Service is excellent, the staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and being a decent size that enables conversations without either having to shout or be concerned people are so close they can overhear you. Menus change regularly so plenty of choice. Will take our visitors every time.
J. G.
Called in for a drink after a long hot walk. Although busy they were able to find us a table in the shade. Had the best fish butty with tartare sauce.
M.
Lovely location, good choice of beer and wine. Food is excellent. Staff try very hard to please. The only downside ( just my opinion ) is the lady in charge. She has the rare ability of being able to totally ignore customers waiting at the bar to pay or order drinks. She is so proficient at it that I thought for one brief moment that I was invisible. Worth it for such good food though ! 🤗
p. f.
Pleasant pub. Very busy when we visited but no complaints about service. Table service. Ice cold cider was just what I needed after a 12 mile hike.
B. F. 1.
Lovely warm welcome from the staff. Sat outside for lunch, we'll spaced and safe. Good choice of food and drink. Would highly recommend to friends and family
R. B.
Nice garden; spicy chicken wrap a tad dry, ham sandwich OK but pricy for what you get. Better value lunches at many other pubs around York.
K. H.
Nice place, very limited beer choice, but what they have is good.
Nice atmosphere, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
All the, now usual, Covid precautions are in place, so we all enjoyed our visit.
s. t.
Went with some friends for Sunday lunch.
I had roast beef, very nice, it was all good but the vegetables were excellent, nice choice of greens.
Would definitely return and recommend.
N.
Lovely food -lovely staff in very nice surroundings . Easy to find off the A64 and well worth a visit !
K. H.
We had a delicious lockdown friendly takeaway from here last weekend, the quality was great and the portions sizes were just right. The online ordering system works a treat with timeslots for collection which ensures the food is served just in time so it is still warm when you get it home. The service was covid secure and staff were friendly as always. Thanks Crown and Cushion team for going the extra mile during lockdown, we really appreciate you!
M. F.
Lovely pub. Very Covid aware. Still running the help out to eat out scheme which was a bonus. My pate and wagu burger were delicious. Sadly they had run out of my first choice, fish pie, but there's always another time.
R. D.
2 meals there during our week holiday 1st meal (Sunday Lunch) was excellent all round, however a midweek evening meal was not too good sadly
So I think this place is down to "luck of the draw"
S. V.
This is one of the most idyllic pub/restaurants I visit.
Set in a village close to Castle Howard it's views from the rear garden are just perfect and tranquil.
I find it the perfect place if you want a quiet drink or something to eat just listening to the birds sing whilst you ponder life in general. 😁. The food is always perfect but reservation may be required at times as this is obviously a popular place to eat.
On this visit I tried the sea bass which was sublime.
I can personally recommend this place if you like great food.
D. J.
Nice food, friendly staff and a good choice of drinks. Dog friendly. Only reason for a 4 was a few items missing from the menu on a Monday night
C. D.
Every year my wife and I and two friends celebrate our wedding anniversaries as we were married within a month of each other many years ago. This time we chose the Crown and Cushion. It is modern but cosy. The food and service were excellent. We were recommended the pheasant and I chose it. Absolutely delicious. Before that I had the black pudding starter. This was a meal in itself, not one of those tiny starters you get sometimes, and very tasty. Would recommend the Crown and Cushion and have done so to colleagues in the office.
K.
Good service and quaint setting, however food was very average unfortunately. Pork steak was tough & chewy and burgers were dry.
B. R.
Fire on, lovely food and great service, you can't want much more really! Thank you!
Updated march 2022- used to be a favourite place to visit but my recent visit wasn't as good, little choice of gluten free (used to be much more) wasn't impressed overall
T. T. P.
Absolutely fantastic pub...very polite and welcoming staff, great beers and the food is lovely. Rib eye for me cooked to perfection, with great flavour...friend had steak and ale pie and with massive chunks of steak in gravy in it. Would highly recommend this pub.
S. T.
Best pub we have been to in a long time. The food was incredible and the staff were so attentive, can't think of any faults.
a. g.
Excellent meal , they have done a good job of the outside area. Staff were very attentive. Tip of the week take a blanket for your legs !
C. C.
A very nice pub in Wellburn. A group of us went for a meal after a walk on Castle Howard estate. We gave our food order in before the walk so we did not have to wait long on return. Food was hot fresh and nicely presented
Staff were efficient and friendly
A minor negative was the menu a little limited. Worth a visit if you are out that way
K. H.
Set in a very pleasant village, the pub and restaurant staff were friendly and efficient. We arrived a bit late to order Sunday roast but they tried their best with what I assume were left overs. The main menu meal that I had was very good.
H. W.
Car park around the back with lots of space. Watch out if you park and enter the building from the rear, as I blundered in to a private event by accident.
Once in the right place I found a well stocked bar and was directed to our reserved table. A good meal followed and was well enjoyed by all. Pleasant atmosphere helped by attentive staff.
F. S.
Absolutely fantastic!! I have no hesitation in recommending this pub restaurant.
Claire helped us organise a surprise 60th birthday party for a party of 10 adults, 4 young children and 2 dogs.
We just expected a simple closed room, but the experience and the space far exceeded our expectations. The planning was easy, and the service on the day was second to none. The food was delicious (all three courses and the coffee/tea afterwards). The place looked beautiful and we really felt like VIPs. It made the occasion totally memorable.
Thank you so much. xxx
H. G. J.
Went there for an evening bar meal, as always wasn’t disappointed! Food was awesome and so was the beer! The staff were friendly and chatty, lovely atmosphere with the fires lit! A great pub to go to and feel at home and relax!
G. H.
Can't fault it food was good staff friendly. I was driving past and with out booking they fitted us in. It was busy I would return for a meal.
G. H.
Lovely atmosphere! Food served reasonably quickly, and very delicious it was too. Open log fire near the bar, and very polite and attentive staff.
A. M.
Lovely place, lots of seating and distinct areas with relaxed and cosy feels. Staff were really friendly and very helpful. Food was amazing, looked beautiful and tasted great. Really worth a visit
K. B.
After a long walk around castle Howard, the Crown and cushion was calling, lovely outdoor beer garden, beer, wine, and food all superb. Would I call again, definitely.
E. D.
Nice outside seating area. Food was average. Ordered the salad for lunch and it was quite disappointing. Got our drinks order wrong. Slow service. Wouldn't rush back. It's just a handy location for meeting up with friends between home destinations
S. C.
Spotless premises. Very good Covid awareness. Excellent meal, attentive staff. Good gluten free options. Will be paying a return visit soon!!
N. M.
I celebrated my 60th family birthday meal for 19 here and it was superb. Ryan was unbelievably helpful. He advised on wines, coordinated everything AND did what he said he would do. It was a wonderful evening and the Crown and Cushion (and Ryan) were exemplary.
It is a rare pleasure for me to give full marks as I have very high standards.
Thank you so much Ryan and to all the people who supported you in delivering a truly memorable evening for us all.
D. N.
A little gem in a beautiful Yorkshire village on the way to Scarborough. Fresh, local and beautiful cooked beef burgers. Very welcoming, friendly and clean place. Yorkshire old pub style.
D. A.
Lovely pub with a very nice outdoor space
N. W.
Popped in for dinner here on a journey back from the coast with the family. All the food was excellent. I had the steak pie and it was one of the best that I've had in years.
j. e.
Food was lovely. Had to ask for clean wine glasses as dirty ones were brought to us, and the service is typical of newly trained teenagers after some pocket money- BUT this place is lovely and would recommend.
A. C.
Was up to its usual standard. Good food and attentive staff. Wednesday "steak night" all round for the four of us. We were even allowed to take home the undrunk wine, that came with the meal, for the driver to drink at home.
C. A.
The food is fabulous.....well worth a visit. The staff are friendly and the service is great. Can't recommend it enough.
C. W.
Lovely meal, only disappointment was not everything available as butcher not been. Well recommended though
S. G.
Usually a great experience and fantastic beer. On my last visit I was told the beer I wanted to drink was temporarily unavailable as they were "pushing" an alternative as the brewery were trying to shape the customers tastes... come on.
m. f.
One of my favorite eating place's for lunch not massive portions varied menus suits me very pleasent staff
P. L.
Excellent parking at the rear of the site. A limited menu but excellent quality of the food we ordered. We'll spaced out to ensure social distancing both inside and out.
I. S.
Lovely food, good service, relaxing place.
D. S.
Great food. Great staff. Pleasant surroundings. Wot more could you want?
A. C.
Couldn't find our booking. Initial table dreadful (although they moved us), food disappointing. With 10% more effort this could be really good.
k. w.
Went here for my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. And was made to feel welcome we had a private function room just off from the main restaurant and bar then we were treated too beautiful buffet lunch that had been Picked by grandparents friendly and helpful staff and Tre service which was provided left us wanting for nothing
d. o.
had a birthday meal for wife and it was absolutely amazing will definitely return in near future
congratulations to all staff keep up the great work .
C. M.
As always excellent service, I had steak and ale pie with potato wedges and roast veg. Piping hot and very tender and tasty. Top marks again.
P. R.
Very nice pub, very friendly staff that look after us well .Very good quality food. Tables are spaced out well
M. B.
Friendly, welcoming service backed up by delicious food. Worth a visit.
P. K.
Welcome was great and food was fantastic. Beer was good and staff were really friendly. A hotel/gourmet restaurant with a local country pub feel..
R. S.
Visited the area for a few days and used the pub most days for drinks and food , very good food and excellent attentive staff , very welcoming and friendly
p. m.
Fabulous Sunday lunch. Will be back more often....book in advance though...its popular
R. M. (.
Food was mostly okay but the burger was very over cooked and didn’t seem like it was wagyu as it said on the menu. For £15, the burger was very disappointing.
C. H.
The staff were excellent, food to die for, facilities all good, I will definitely recommend.
M. W.
Nice little village pub, went in with friends from a walking group for a drink at lunch time on a Tuesday. Reasonably busy. Seemed to be short of quite a few normal drinks
L. P.
Excellent food very friendly staff felt very safe the team are doing an excellent job under the difficult circumstances we all find ourselves in
g. P. (. v. d.
We never went in but past it a lot it seemed a nice place for a drink very nice village pub very clean and tidy
