Reviews of House Of The Trembling Madness
A. S.
Great pub above a shop with biggest variety of beer I've ever seen. We didn't eat here, but wished we had as the food looked great. Beer selection brilliant and well kept. Full of character. We will definitely be back.
S. H. (.
This is a bit of Hike up flights of stairs but worth the effort. Its not a massive room and can get quite busy. Ales to choose from on a board which is constantly updated. Plenty to look at on the walls, great staff who were very patient. We did not eat here but the food coming out looked excellent.
As far as we could see it was being preped behind the bar in the smallest 'kitchen' area I have ever seen. But it was all done without fuss.
Its got to be worth a visit by everyone - Just give it a go, take it all in and leave trembling

What a hidden gem of a pub, shop and place...
My only regret is not being able to stay longer and try the food, which look and smelt amazing.
The selection of real ales and larger was great, and i cant praise the staff high enough, these people obviously love the job, are very passionate to providing a great service and experience.
The decor and atmosphere is quirky, surreal and practical, there has obviously been a loot of work to make the place look this amazing and humble.
All in great place to visit, enjoy and im looking forward to coming back.
10/10

Lovely but small pub upstairs, set in a lovely old building. Most people seem to only stop off for a swift half so tables become available quite readily. And with a mind blowingly excellent shop downstairs!
M. B.
My friends had told me about this place and I recommended it to my wife who visited York on a "shopping" trip 🤔 with her friend 5 years ago.
She loved it and promised to bring me here.
I was not disappointed and the friendly service, the decor, the views of the Minster and the general buzz of the place really was to my liking.
We stayed for a couple of drinks but there was a constant flow of people coming and going that showed how popular the place was.
We had not long had brunch and regretted it as the food that came to the tables next to us looked really great (the pies especially would have fed a regiment).
All in all I think this was the best hostelry we visited during our weekend break in York.
G. C.
Tiny medieval pub upstairs from the best offy ever. Really nice place to come for a pint and friendly staff who'll chew your ear off.
Actually, I have to edit my review as I've been thinking about this. It's great. We have a staff who are obviously from different backgrounds and different places, but they all seem to get on like clockwork and will make sure you get your drinks quickly as well as being happy to answer any questions you have.
On the other hand, we have people from eighteen to eighty all sat there loving the place without a second thought. From the stag do (well behaved as well!) To the octogenarian lady with her family who had some cheeky remarks and a boss smile. All there and all in between. This pub is incredible and if you can get in there then for the love of Odin then do. It's so good.
P. G.
Gem of a pub upstairs from the well stocked off licience with an extensive drinks selection. Including some excellent Belgian beers. The food is homemade and very tasty and filling.
M.
Do not miss this pub! It's above the liquor store. Great old time ambience. Great selection of ales and wines. They provide shot glass tastes of the ale is unfamiliar.
i. s.
We went to buy some drinks there but to our surprise, it had a pub upstairs.
Perfect for chilling out, great choices for beer and ciders.
Staff is friendly and fun.
M. M.
Absolutely stunning Tudor era ale house.
Downstairs is an off-licence with a huge variety of drinks.
Upstairs is the house of trembling madness.
Presumably called so due to the crooked nature of the walls and windows. It’s so ancient that it looks like it could fall down at every moment. However the atmosphere upstairs is just lovely, and it’s definitely a place to have a quiet drink with some friends and soak in the history of York
T. W.
Excellent bar that also serves good food to keep you going. The bar is upstairs from the shop which houses a large selection of beers and other alcohol (whisky, him, rum etc.). You can purchase from the huge array in the shop and for a small charge drink the beers you bought upstairs at the bar. More than enough to keep any beer fanatic happy 🍻 There is some limited seating outside and be aware that it's a popular place so you may find the seating upstairs already taken.
M. “. B.
One of the best pubs in York hands down. Every time I'm in the city I go. Incredible selection of keg and cask beer. Probably the best selection of bar snacks I've seen with flavoured olives, nuts and pork scratchings. The food specials are to die for if you get there before they sell out and if not the platters are enormous! Plus if you want something different beer wise just go to the bottle shop downstairs and bring it up (one of the original and best bottle shops in England)
R. S.
At first glance this place looks just like an off licence/bottle shop but when you go inside and go upstairs you discover the most amazing bar.
The staff were brilliant and helpful with suggestions and knowledge about the beer on tap. The food is superb, and even more amazing considering the absolutely Tony kitchen space they have.
All the beers we had were in brilliant condition and really enjoyable
B. P.
Decided to visit York and indulge on an epic pub crawl. Came across the intriguing name of this pub/bar/bottle shop and just had to include it in our jaunt. Cool old school vibe with plenty of beers to try. Staff were friendly and fun and the vibe was great. Definitely recommend if you're out and about in York!
M. L.
Really lovely place. Incredible selection of beer in the shop, decent selection in the pub too. Atmosphere and decor are both really good - lots of stuffed creatures on the walls, rickety stairs, very olde worlde. Love it.
D. “. H.
Best pub in York hands down. The pie was awesome and the beer selection was second to none. Animal heads all over the walls and staff super nice. Loved this place
T. B.
Staggered away grinning after this one, bellies full, quite content. Excellent selection of beers and spirits. Break your neck trying to take in all the awesome decor. Awesome staff too, 11/10 would reccomend. We'll be back.
m. s.
100% love it amazing selection of beers, great building and amazing food this has got to be the best bottle shop and bar in York
C. B.
Great bar, lots of beer choice. Friendly service. Vibe perhaps a bit too 'trying to be weird', but it was fine. Really enjoyed the cheese board at a reasonable price. Good view of the cathedral from upstairs.
D. N.
Very different venue housing a wide variety of drinks in the upstairs bar. Has a shop below to purchase bottles. Speed of service is very variable which is the only downpoint.
B.
I really liked the style of the place and the lad who served me was really helpful in helping me choose the right drink. What I wasn't too keen on what the amount of people sat around the bar. Also you've got to be a contortionist to use the toilet. I'm 6 foot 4 and struggled to have a pee.
L.
A great Bar to visit when in York 👍
Aside from the humongous selection of Alcohol to buy from the Shop on the ground floor👍 the Bar one the 1st floor is great. It has a great selection of Beers and a great atmosphere, with lots of things on the Walls to look at )and a great view of the Minster 👍)
Well worth visiting 😎
S. C.
Massive selection of beers in the shop and the bar is amply stocked.
Friendly staff, great pie an mash in a lovely old building

I looked at the description of this tiny bar before we chose it. So for people who have left 1 star reviews about the stuffed animal heads, don't go in if offends you, or leave if you didn't know before hand. The bar staff were fun, helpful and advised us how to order, plus there is a chalk board to let you know. There is a drinks menu with prices, so again no need for 1 star reviews for price. That goes for food too. I will say don't choose to eat if you are in a rush. But, if you have the time to chill and enjoy your drink while the bar staff cook your food selection from fresh behind the bar, then worth the wait. My bacon brioche bun was well packed with award winning delicious bacon, and the bar only makes pence on the food. The idea is you enjoy the choice of drinks and real ale on offer. With the bonus of treating yourself in the shop downstairs. Again you shouldn't give a place a low review based on other visitors behaviour. If you have a sense of humour, are seeking something different which isn't a national chain in a historical building and love real ale, give it a go. The staff in the shop were helpful and friendly and we will now buy our mead online from here.
J. M.
Firstly, the bar is up the stairs, head through the front door, walk past all the shelves of tempting choices and climb the stairs to the pub itself. Its quirky, its entertaining, and the staff are what make it fabulous.
Faced with an array of choices, the staff asked us a few questions to get an idea of our likes and dislikes, made a suggestion and got it right first time with us both (we have different tastes).
How the staff can put out fantastic food from the smallest of kitchens is beyond me, but they do, and they do it well.
It's a place to sit and enjoy a fantastic pint in a great setting and we certainly did.
Just watch out for the dog that has taken up residence in the fireplace...

22nd October 2021 - Very knowledgeable and friendly staff in the shop and upstairs bar. Bought Westmalle beers and Westmalle glass, Tytn Meadow glasses and Samuel Smith beers! Great selection of spirits downstairs! I highly recommend The House of Trembling Madness!
23rd November - placed an order on the online store last Saturday and it arrived safely today. Member of staff called me last Saturday because I made an error! He sorted it out quickly! Excellent service! I do recommend The House of Madness!

This place is a hidden little gem !
Me and my wife's first visit great selection of ales loved the 6% cider staff was very welcoming and friendly.quaint Little bar with the taxidermy deco! very unusual been part of like an off licence having customers round the wc areas with shopping baskets with display cabinets selling spirits beers and wines made our visit fun. deffo return on our next visit loved it
T. W.
Very quiet at 10:30am when it opened, gets really busy around lunchtime then on into the afternoon.
Great staff, good food and excellent beers in a quirky setting.
Dont go if stuffed heads upset you, otherwise GO, cos it's fantastic!
J. D.
Great cosy little pub above a fantastic beer shop. We were lucky to get a table so we got some sharing platters which were delicious. Plenty of choice for beer aswell, brilliant place.
L. A.
Didn’t enter the restaurant, but entered the shop via the adjacent street and was gobsmacked by the sheer variety of beers and spirits. Like a kid in a candy store but somehow managed to select only 2 samples from the shelves.
J.
Browsed the beer shop while the restaurant upstairs was full. Bought a few rare craft beers and a Duvel glass, been wanting one for years.
Sneakily camped out in the back of the shop eyeing up the red light, over half an hour later it went green and you bet I hit that staircase in a millisecond.
Felt a bit guilty taking a 4 seat table for myself but I sat down and took in the surroundings. The room is completely wonky, one of the best medieval buildings I've been inside. The bar and taxidermy really set the mood. Service was friendly and fast and welcoming, despite how busy they were.
Ordered the cheese platter and a couple of strong beers. All excellent.
I would go again but the dedication to secure a table was a bit extreme, I was lucky there was no one else there employing my tactics, or it could have become awkward.
T. “. H.
Lovely little hidden pub above a very good alcohol shop! Loved the decor and had a very friendly welcoming vibe with a great drink selection.
N. R.
Our favourite pub. Love the different beers and the sharing platters. And of course the quirky interior.
D. R.
It's an interesting place with the alcohol shop on two floors, and pub upstairs. There is a very good selection of beers/spirits from all over the world. We didn't go upstairs to the bar, so can't comment on that, although we saw that you are able to pay a "corkage" price and take your purchase upstairs to drink.
The only downside for us was the prices! You could find most things elsewhere a lot cheaper, but that's what you get from a "tourist" shop in the centre of York. Hence we didn't buy anything, but it was certainly worth a look as it's such a unique place. Oh, and there was a Cuban Cigar cabinet too, although we didn't see the contents.
J. L.
Had a super afternoon in this quirky, warm and friendly pub. The staff are great 👍
J. c.
Great pub kind of hard to find, you would think it's just a beer shop, but above is a cracking little bar up some steep steps, and the toilets are down some stairs.
Food was lovely, and beers served great.
The large venison pie was lovely. With mash and mushy peas.and for 9.50 you don't get much more in York for that price, all food is freshly cooked so will be a wait.
Its only tiny so may or may not get in if not go the other one that is huge on Lendal
M.
If you love good food and good beer, then this is a good place to go. I went there twice during my stay in York. Can't fault anything with this establishment.
P. B.
We're staying just outside York and was tipped off about House of the Trembling Madness
Been for lunch today and it's well worth a visit. Little bar above a well stocked beer/spirit shop on Stonegate.
BIG platters of food (with doggy bags if need be), we shared 2 platters and were well stuffed.
Well worth a visit for the beer but stay for the food!
D. M.
Excellent selection of beer, fantastic food and quirky surroundings - definitely recommend
T. S.
Great spot, good beer selection at the bar upstairs, including some Belgian bottles in the fridge. Beer shop downstairs has a massive variety of stock, all styles represented and loads of different breweries offerings! Open til midnight I do believe.
P. C.
Good simple food, excellent choice of beer. Unique decor!
L. L.
Huge selection of beers, spirits and other drinks plus a great pub upstairs. If you're lucky enough to nab one of the two tables out the front of the shop it's the perfect place for people watching with a good beer.
I. E.
Quite a place for a beer. Upstairs pub serves proper ales (unlike most pubs in York and anywhere else really) in a unique environment. Ground floor you can buy beer to take away and spitirs in the basement. Great place to visit really. Would go again.
g.
You have to go here!
Amazing selection of beers in the shop downstairs and a pub upstairs! Cosy feel and a good selection of Belgian beers on tap.
Quirky little place and there's a proper bar not far from here too
P. M.
Absolutely recommended, great food, amazing Venison pie, great beer selection and very cool atmosphere! The only negative point was the wait for the food but overall great experience
C.
A must-see, must-stop-at pub for anyone who enjoys a drink, although I found it a little hard to access as someone who knows little about alcohol. Their lemonade was good too though? Ambience amazing - peep the little mouse door on the stairs!
P. B.
Craft beer, cask beer, burgers, sausages, polite staff, authentic atmosphere and reasonable prices. What else can you want?
a. h.
When you visit York, you have to pop here. Quieter when it's sunny. For some reason when it rains there's often a queue down the street to get in.
T. F.
Small upstairs bar with a great range of beers. If you can't find the beer you want, their shop is on the ground floor and you can take it up with you, or take it home for a cheaper price. Food is good too.
T. C.
Beautiful building and the staff were so brilliant, really made me laugh. Their tzatziki is top-tier
B. N.
Really cool little pub with a good rotation of ales on tap as well as a mean cheese board.
Downstairs is probably the best selection of (local) independent beers I've seen in the UK.
K. W.
Awesome selection of pretty much everything in the booze spectrum, nice friendly staff both in the shop and upstairs in the bar.
Great little quirky place, definatly a must for people who want to try something different to drink.
C. R.
Brilliant drinks, great food, fantastic building, lovely staff and reasonable prices - what more could you want? Been half a dozen times now and every visit was as good as the first - food is VERY, VERY good!
J. B.
Amazing place with beer shop at ground level, spirits downstairs and a pub upstairs. Pub has great character, and bar staff were friendly. Would definitely recommend.
K. C.
Trembling Madness...mediaeval ale house, craft beer/spirits/wine shop in a fantastic haunted building. Comprehensive choice of craft beers, incredible surroundings and knowledgeable and relaxed bar staff.
We had a great time here.
R. D.
an AMAZING place. came up to York to visit a friend in the middle of the 40 degree heat wave (horrible) and they were so accommodating - amazing aircon. but more than that, generally a lovely place - super cool decor, an amazing range of drinks (had a great cherry ale), and friendly and helpful barstaff. Would visit here anytime I came to York, not just in a heatwave! in fact i would visit York to come here.
A. T.
Excellent atmosphere and brilliant food. Fantastic choice of drinks. All in an amazingly curious roof space with rafters and taxidermy. Brilliantly bonkers, brilliantly brilliant!
K. T.
This place is a hidden gem! What looks like another shop in a busy bustling street is actually a treasure trove of alcoholic drinks from far and wide and possibly the biggest range of every drink ever that I have seen! Yet go upstairs and your in for a treat, a fantastic cosy little bar incredibly popular with those who have manage to discover it. They sell a wide range of drinks but their food menu is out of this world! We had some children in too which is plus as it is family friendly something we weren't aware of. The food we had the venison pie and steak pie which everyone agreed was the best pies they had ever eaten and the platters look out of this world! Beware they fill you up big time so arrive starving! It did get busy quick so you have to time it well. We will definitely be back!
A. A.
The staff were nice and friendly. The pub is upstairs and is not very big (5 or 6 tables currently) the toilets downstairs (below the shop) have glass cabinets full of spirits which is quite cool. There is a another house of trembling madness in York which we also visited which we found to be much better
K. M.
Amazing selection of alcohol and the added option of being able to buy a bottle then go upstairs to the pub to drink it, that was amazing! Staff were all friendly and the pub atmosphere was great.
E. R.
Lovely quirky little bar. Staff really friendly and helpful. Loads of different gins, which is always a good thing
A. B.
My favourite place to eat and drink!! Fantastic menu and great service!! A good variety of beers and wines loved the atmosphere.
D. H.
Cosy bar with plenty of atmosphere featuring plenty of local ales. I had the mango cider that was making the rounds at the time, very sweet but a tasty treat nonetheless.
The staff were kind and the service prompt and to the point. In addition to a fair drinks selection they offer a decent range of pub grub including some fantastic pies.
Bare in mind that this is a small location which is popular so medium/large groups at night time will struggle visiting this venue. It should also be noted that this bar is above a shop and the toilets are below it so given the steps elderly and less able customers may have issues.
Overall this bar is well worth a visit both for locals and those on a shopping visit to York.
A. H.
Fantastic place. Great bottle shop downstairs, and hidden away above is a wonderful little bar. Oak beams and plaster walls and ceiling, with a view of York Minster out of the window. Great music, really lovely, friendly and helpful staff, tasty snacks and freshly prepared food, and a really fantastic selection of draught and bottled beers, with an emphasis on continental styles.
A haven from the bustle of the street outside, and well set up for coronavirus safety - everything is clean, well spaced, and orders are placed by app.
A real gem. ❤️
E.
Cool bottle shop, upstairs pub has a great vibe. Some members of staff i found quite unfriendly and irritable, but that may have been because it was a busy Saturday.
L. J.
Loved it here. Downstairs in a ale shop and upstairs is a pub. Well priced and great selection
D. C.
You definitely get some madness here ... And some luscousness!!
Plenty of curiosities to amaze and wonder.
The coffee was spot on to my liking, with some super, buttery biscuits.
The sharing platter was AMAZING!! Every component on there was incredibly tasty, and although I couldn't physically eat any more, in my head, I would have liked to have continued munching for a lot longer.
Jolly staff, who were welcoming and helpful.
I would love to come back if I were ever in the area again.
m. w.
We had the most amazing bacon sandwiches. The staff and service was friendly and efficient. We will call again next time we are in York.
S.
A new favourite! The shop has an extensive selection of beers and spirits from various countries. If you do manage to get a seat in the bar upstairs (it's always busy!), the home-made food is excellent and there are more great beers on tap from which to choose - or you can take your purchases from the shop to consume there if you like. We found the bar always had a great atmosphere and we found ourselves chatting to visitors from various countries when we were there. We found all the staff to be very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable too (despite what a couple of other commenters have said).
J. M.
Cool mini bar above an extensive bottle shop. Great looking venue, good beer selection but food was a little average.
E. A.
Meal was amazing, we had the burger with beer cheese & bacon and the pie, bother we’re delicious. Quite difficult to get a table as it’s a small dining room and can get cramped, try visiting at a quieter time like late lunch or early evening. Good beer selection with plenty Belgium and local ales.
C. P.
Lovely Mead, I would recommend the rhubarb mead (surprising I know) as it’s the sweetest and smoothest although all the mead there is lovely 10/10
M. S.
OMG, Amazing food, Amazing Ale, amazing building, great staff and service. The best bar and bottle shop in york 100% recommend
M. T.
The small bar is upstairs accessed through the shop. High ceiling shows the wooden beams and stoneworkoff brilliantly. Gets busy at weekends and quite warm, even in March. Friendly staff were quick to resolve pump issues without fuss. Good range of beers at a competitive price. Great place to sit and chat. Worth the effort of climbing those stairs
C. d. P.
The shop is amazing and has a good selection of beers. Whenever you get the occasion to visit the shop don’t miss the opportunity to drink upstairs in the pub, it has a unique style, the staff in friendly and assist you with requests of beers and taste.
Highly recommended.
J. B.
Bar "hidden" through a beer and spirits shop. Head through the door then upstairs. Great place for a beer and home-cooked food.
R. B.
We visited due to several recommendations from friends and we were not disappointed. Bar table vacancies are indicated by the colour of a light in the shop downstairs. Green = table available, red = no tables available. A useful system given the current C19 situation. Orders are taken via app and are brought to the table. We sampled the elderflower infused cider and the session beer. Both were excellent, as was the green tea... Not just alcoholic drinks served here. The standard of the bar snacks was exceptional. The Spanish olives ordered were accompanied with pickled onions, gherkins and capers, all infused with chili. Delicious. My wife had mixed nuts - cashews, peanuts and almonds. Staff were extremely helpful and the atmosphere of the bar was great. We attempted to return later in the day but it is obviously popular and as a relatively small venue, chance your arm and sample it for yourself. Highly recommended.
G. D. M.
Fabulous, we shared 2 platters! All lovely. Staff really helpful, couldn't fault it if I tried! :)
M. S.
One of our favourite pubs in the uk, great for stocking up on some special beers
R. D.
Special place, one of my favourite places for a relaxed drink in York. Atmosphere is second to none. Staff are top class. Drinks selection hard to beat. Good music that is not too loud to prevent good chat. Nibbles available but not had myself. Reasonable prices all-round. Interior is quite unique with a off-licence on the ground floor and this quirky bar on the 1st floor. A lot of thought has gone in to this place, which makes this a really worthy place to visit. I would happily take all my friends here and expect them to enjoy it a lot.
S. B.
We were lucky enough to find a table here on Saturday and had a lovely evening. Loved the drinks, food and service.
A. 5.
We always visit the House Of Trembling Madness while in York. The cellar has a fine selection of spirits including some great gins. Ground floor has one of the countries best bottle shops with an amazing selections of canned and bottles beers from all over the world. Refrigerated beers in the front and shelf after shelf in the back. Top floor is the bar with outstanding beers on keg and tap. Great decor and very busy so little chance of getting a seat at busy times. Try the meat platters and the chorizo is so good. Good luck moving to the new premises which will no doubt have more greatness over more floors. Recommended.
S. B.
Astonishing place! The bottleshop down stairs is extraordinary enough, brilliant selection of beers ciders mead and spirits from around the world at sensible prices, but the pub upstairs is something else, amazing craft beers, all the rare bottled stuff from downstairs and delicious food. We shared a 'Madness Platter', pork pie, smoked duck, smoked chicken, wonderful cheese, artisan bread and assorted pickles, olives and chutney. £12 and plenty for two. Very quirky ancient beams , walks covered in often jokey taxidermy and fascinating stuff. We'll definitely be back. Not to be missed...
M. R.
This place is incredible!
Never seen such a huge selection of beer/drinks. Love the concept of being able to buy any beer/drinks from the ship to drink in the pub upstairs.
The pub upstairs is medieval looking with candles and beautiful high ceilings.
Do not skip this place!
S. G.
What a little gem. Wandered in here on a whim and we were wowed. Great bar tender, so obvious he loves his job, in fact all the staff are great. Had great food made fresh. Drink choice extensive with craft beers rotated regularly. Do not miss this one if you are in York!
J. W.
Excellent hidden away little gem of a find on stone gate.. enter through a real ale and liquor shop.. towards the back are the stairs leading up to the quaint little bar.. where you are greeted with exposed original timber roof..and fireplace setting..
The bar has lots of real ale on the pumps.and great selection of gins and spirits...food service all day.. with a great selection of ploughman's platters...a must visit... can't wait to go back..
A. A.
Great place for drinks or food. We shared the vegan platter which was very nice.
R. L.
Great place, great beer, great staff what's more to be said eh !

Amazing range of beers, ace bar tucked away in roof space with excellent ales !
T. S.
Love this place. Great food and a fantastic selection of beers in a quirky setting. Always friendly staff and service. Food very tasty and big portions. A must stop in York.
S. P.
Visited both venues, both different styles. Drink and food Good, great selection of beers in the shops. Will return to buy more supplies 😉
H. T.
Great atmosphere here. The staff are so lovely and really felt welcome. The food was good and would definitely recommend going!
D. W.
Quirky place entered through a shop and up a flight of steep stairs, into something like I imagine a baronial hunting lodge might look with animals heads mounted on the wall. Worth visiting for the experience.
B. T.
Amazing shop/pub. Highly recommend a visit! Possible the most craft beer/ale I've seen in one place. Prices are cheap and you can even buy a drink in the "shop" downstairs then take it upstairs to the pub to drink. The upstairs bar is cosy and has a good variety of ales.
If you're after spirits, there are hundreds of bottles to choose from also. A must visit if you're wandering around York.
G. H.
Absolutely incredible pub, one of my favourites in the UK. The platters are absolutely amazing.
R. K.
My favourite place to visit in York. Great food, more choice of drinks than you can ever imagine!! The choice of mead for me was just heaven!! The food is exceptional and very fresh!! We can't wait to visit again!!
Picture of the cheese platter!
A. B.
A bottle shop downstairs with a super quaint bar upstairs. Amazing choice in the bottle shop and always has 5 or more great beers on keg/tap. Love this little place.

We visited on a recommendation from a colleague, and weren't disappointed. Tasty food, good drinks and a fun atmosphere. It was very busy, so the food took a while to come, but staff were friendly and happy to help, and people come and go fairly regularly, so finding somewhere to sit didn't take long at all.
A. C.
Fantastic place love the shop and the whisky floor on the way to the loo.friendly staff and thank you for the free drink for my wife's birthday
D. R.
Great beers great wine at a great price
Lovely staff who know their stuff on beers
Food lovely
We had the cheese platter to share
Great for a lunch
J.
Great place and the food was fantastic and staff where welcoming
A. H.
Fantastic (as always) superb selection of draft/cask/bottled beer
L. B. R.
Browsed the nicely stocked shop before tasting the amazing sharing platters. Would highly recommended the food. Loved the atmosphere too.
M. C.
The alcohol selection here is incredible! Highly recommend visiting here if you have the chance. Stop in for food, for a pint, or just to buy some drinks and head out on the town!
P. H.
Been to the shop cafe several times on our trip. Historic decor, cosy atmosphere, friendly efficient staff, tasty filling food (particularly the bacon sarnie) and large coffees all at very reasonable prices. Highly recommend.
S. B.
Wonderful. The ever-changing beer selection is excellent and the building is superb. Eclectic across the four floors with bars on two of them (that I know of). Interesting and very sensible selection of pinchos available plus a range of proper food from the counter. Highly recommended.
S. L.
Great little find! More craft beers available on tap as apposed to the well known brands you may be familiar with, but allows an education! Food is more snack/tapas style such as olives, cheese.....nuts. If you're a lover of nuts you need to sample the jalapeno flavoured nuts and the honey chilli, you will not be disappointed!
J. K.
Gorgeous food and unique craft beers. Definitely visit again!
C. H.
Easily my new favourite shop/bar/pub or whatever we need to call it. We visited both venues and found them totally bizarre but fun. As much as I LOVED the decor the staff were the most interesting. I couldn't believe the food that came out of the kitchen/bar and how they managed to rotate who does what and when. Food was fantastic, music even better and of course the alcohol. No visit to York will be complete without a visit here. Until next time...
L. C.
Fantastic selection of beers to buy, and to sample upstairs. The bar meals are if good quality, price to suit once's purse. Locally soursed very filling, can get very busy.Sample very high octane beers at your peril. Full marks all round.
H. S.
Great selection of Beers, Quirky bar upstairs serving craft beers and food. Pleasant staff. A must visit when in York.
T. P.
Quirky shop selling all kinds of craft beers, exotic spirits and wine. Unique bar upstairs serving a variety of great ales (as well as Hofbrau Original on tap!!) Nice atmosphere with friendly, laid-back staff. If you visit, look out for the heads on the wall in the bar, and the impressive collection of gins and whiskeys downstairs.
J. B.
Found this place by accident and What a gem it is. We stayed in the pub for about 6 hours as the prices and beer where very gd and the atmosphere was great. The staff where brilliant and we would have happy stayed longer if they didn't have to close. Recommended this pub to anyone for fancy gd beer in quirky surroundings.
K. N.
Totally love this place and the platters are brilliant and sooo tasty and priced really well. Fantastic!
T. G.
A hidden gem quite unique and it display old throphies of aristocratic hunting style with a combination of medieval pub. The beer just as the place are unique...
J. D.
Lovely,. Michael was our server, we had three tapas(Turkish) each they were very tasty. Michael was extremely helpful and polite , we liked him very much thankyou 😁😁
D. C. B.
Stop there for beers, beers and beers ! Give a go to the belgian beers like the Kasteel Rouge or the Duchesse de Bourgogne and try their homemade tapas “Chorizo in Scrumpy”. Staff are welcoming, knowledgeable and fun
M. W.
Excellent little bar above a very well stocked off license. Very quirky with a great choice of craft ales, and a good food menu. Highly recommended.
S. H.
Well this place is surprising. Looks like a tiny bottle shop and bar from the outside. Inside it is vast, great selection of beer, including the widest selection of low and non alcoholic beer I've seen anywhere. I took away, bitnit looked as though everything was available for drink in or takeaway.
Staff were friendly and helpful. If you are stood outsidenwondering wether to go in. Do it, you'll be glad you did.
Beer highlight of York.
D. F.
Great shop! Excellent selection of beers and spirits. And the bar upstairs has a great atmosphere and is very quirky. A must visit if you are in York
H. N.
Decent draft menu and even better selection of bottles/cans (good variety of breweries and styles) in the shop too
S.
Arrived just about lunch time and their kitchen was just opened. Lower floor has a HUGE collection of booze that is already making me want to give a five, but also the food came fast and their pie and mash is just amazingly comforting, bonus point for the on tap beer that refreshes in layers in between bites.
A. M.
Great little place. So small and popular the staff are great. The drinks are spot and the food is delicious. Definitely going back. The decor is something I've never seen..you have to see it to believe it.
M. R.
Beer heaven! What a great place to drink and meet people. Beer shop is amazing too. Will be back!
A. H.
One of the best beer shops I've ever been to, and a great bar upstairs too!
K. B.
By far the best place in York for craft ales, ciders and spirits. Excellent food, great staff. What more could you want!
E. A. B.
A very cool and quirky craft beer shop downstairs and pub upstairs. The atmosphere is lively and social with taxidermy and medieval artefacts lining the walls. A fab range of craft beers and ales on offer from the bar too. The service is brilliant - all the staff are very chatty and knowledgeable about the beers on offer. The food looks amazing - especially the pie and mash!
V.
What a hidden little gem 💎 this place is! It’s rare to find a true sanctuary that hosts a variety of great drinks and atmosphere to match. Highly recommend and it all comes down to the staff who make this place so special. Thank you to all, who made our visit so special!
E. D.
Unbelievably different quite magical place and great young staff serving the widest selection of drinks imaginable and lovely food.
S. S.
Great beer. Great food. Great atmosphere. Had a wonderful cheese plate. Would recommend.
S. H.
Awesome hidden gem. Always worth a quick beer upstairs if passing.
R. T.
A great selection of beer in the bar upstairs and a huge selection of beer in the bottle shop on the ground floor. A great selection of spirits downstairs too.
I. D.
Amazing choice of beers and spirits in the shop. Cool bar upstairs. Different beers on tap
L. H.
We don't come to York very often so it was our first time in here, and really enjoyed it. It's an off license when you first come in with every beer or lager you could imagine. Upstairs its the bar with a good selection of beers, nice a cosy but it can get hot and stuffy. The decor is querky to say the least, good to see something different. we didn't try the food but it looked lovely. We would come again when in York again.
R. S.
Good beers, obviously, and we enjoyed our beef stew and beef pie, though both lacked depth of flavour and could do with some herbs and spices. Ambience was good too, bustling but not overcrowded.
I. T.
Amazing breakfast, staff are so helpful. Even do craft beers if that is your thing. Dont walk on by
L. B.
Wow what an extensive range of beer. Excellent value and very cool place. Highly recommended
L. C.
Always great to visit here for the bat and the shop. The platters are amazing and the decor unusually wonder
A. N.
Great spot for a drink. Very quirky bar with excellent people watching opportunities! Great beer and wine selection (and the rest). Tasty snacks on offer from nuts, olives and pickled eggs, to sharing platters and main courses! Have a look around the excellent craft beer and spirits on offer in the shop before you leave!
A. M.
No cocktails but a lovely G&T sat outside in the sunshine. Great beer menu too.
v.
VERY small.
VERY cozy.
Interesting beers on tap. Great atmosphere. Fast service. Tasty food. But very small indeed, it can be a challenge to find a place to sit down. Shop downstairs has a huge selection of beers if you're interested.
j. h.
Awesome atmosphere and such friendly staff. Dog friendly as well . Best burger I've ever had
P. J.
Excellent bar and bottle shop. Nice charcuterie and cheese boards, good friendly staff.
L. B.
Friendly service, great range of beers and fantastic prices
A. N.
Loved it, great vibe, wonderful building and lovely staff. The beer selection was awesome.. what's not to like !
J. D.
Amazing atmosphere and food experience. Had the best carrot cake in all of the U.K. so far. It was moist and perfectly sweet.
J. A.
An absolute gem. A small shop frontage easily missed as you walk down York's historic Stonegate, pause and you think it's nothing special, another tourist trap, then you continue on. You may have just missed one of the best Craft and Continental beer shops around. Take a look beyond the front desk to the back room which has a couple of hundred different beers (with the glasses to match) then up the stairs to the tiny bar (there is a limit to the number of people at any one time) if you venture downstairs you are met with an unbelievable selection of spirits, trust me the pictures do not do it justice.
h.
Pub located above a beer shop. Small bar with amazing atmosphere and great range of unique beers. Wine and spirits also available and food, didn't try this though. Little wait to get a seat!
C. H.
Amazing. The selection of beer, spirits, cider etc is insane. The pub upstairs is worth the trip alone!
B. H.
This shop has the largest selection of beer I have ever seen
A. B.
Very unique pub, placed above the shop the small bar has a very cosy atmosphere and good variety of drinks.
Only downside is the stairs down to the toilet as expected of york they are steep and not the most stable due to the age of yhe building. Personally, I find this adds the charm but is just something to bear in mind
J. H.
Excellent beers in a fantastic zillion year old building. The quirky bar upstairs has a number of cask and key keg offerings, served by knowledgeable and friendly staff, all under the watchful eyes of taxidermied trophy heads haunting the rafters
The pub does a limited menu of very nice pub food, plus top breakfast butties to help you start drinking early doors
Downstairs, the bottle shop is large and comprehensive, a floor below you've got gins, scotch etc
A visit to York has failed without a trip to Trembling Madness
C. K. (.
A must visit purely because of how old this place is! They also have a great selection of beer and spirits!
J. C.
If you are a craft beer lover this is a 'must go to' experience in York. Its in a fascinating medieval building which is an added bonus. In the ground floor shop you will find the best stocked craft beer off-licence and in the cellar there is a large craft spirits store.
L. E.
What a find, just thought this was an off license but so much more, great selection of beers and spirits, will definitely come again, food looked really good as well.
L. R.
2 pubs with the same name in york. My advice try them both 👍
L. O.
Snake your way up the staircase above the shop and walk into a treat. The walls are covered in taxidermy, there were high beams and good tunes. The staff are friendly and the drinks are good. A well thought out beer list, alongside delicious mulled wine and cider. We didn't try the food but it looked like good, hearty fayre.
K. E. N.
Cool surroundings, very friendly staff and great food! 10/10 would recommend.
M. D.
What a quirky little pub! You would walk down stonegate and never find this wonderful tiny bar unless someone told you about it. A good range of beers and ciders to cater for most tastes, ranging from quite weak brews to ales that should be approached with care.
The small bar incorporates a cooking space which rules up a small but very tasty menu.
Now I have found it I will return, hopefully when I'm not driving, so I can sample more than one of the potion's on offer
T. K.
Unbelievable selection of craft beers...will definitely be visiting there again.
P. F.
Great food and drinks in a unique location with terrific atmosphere
j. h.
Loved it fantastic shop and the pub upstairs is fantastic serving real craft ales .
K. M.
Great pub with a great atmosphere! Staff are wonderful, and you get a great selection of drinks. The food is always lovely, and if you're just wanting something small the pork pies are always a good choice!
M. W.
The difference between the US and UK is that the US puts every historical thing behind velvet ropes. The UK makes a Pub out of it! What an amazing place! Service was amazing, the meal was OFF the chart fantastic! Of course the company was the best and it was insane to think about the History of this place. Magnificent experience!
L. O.
Amazing food, great choice of beer and the atmosphere was fabulous - we'll come again! ♥
M. F.
The burger 🍔 was delicious had to take half home coleslaw was good. Atmosphere was quirky and the server was very nice. I'm glad I've been and will be going again next time I'm in York
A.
What a gem! It’s tiny and has the tendency to get quite rammed but understandably so. The beer is delicious, the staff are amazing and the building and decor are great. I was recommended this place by friends and I absolutely recommend it to everyone, well worth a visit for such a friendly welcome and such a great selection of beer.
d. b.
Fantastic boards and beer selection. Staff at bar is quirky and fun. Take with beer selection is almost overwhelming, but equally fantastic.
A. M.
Went into the shop on Black Friday weekend and it was super busy but the staff were very kind and helpful. I wasn’t sure what I wanted and a lovely person called Ryan took the time to explain some of the drinks to me and recommended me ones based on roughly what I wanted. Even though Ryan seemed busy he was patient with me and super nice.
D. K.
Excellent pub with outstanding beers. Favorites were Vanilla Porter Bad Kitty and Opaque Reality Passion Fruit Milkshake IPA. Word is out, bit hard to get a seat. Worth the wait, highly recommend!
D. B.
Exceptional place for anyone who loves beer. Beer heaven!
c. m.
Fantastic place.
Looks like an off licence but has a pub upstairs.
Great selection of beers and the food is incredible value
C. J.
Had to wait for the green light before going upstairs to the bar, but is always a worthwhile experience, love it.
J. M.
One stop shop for all of your alcoholic needs; beers, spirits and everything in between. Pub upstairs is fantastic, staff are friendly and fun.
A. P.
Love the original, smaller venue. Favourite place in York - quirky, cool and full of character. Atmosphere is super chilled, clientele and staff really friendly and the selection of drinks available from both the bar and (even more dangerously for the wallet) the shop is incredible. A must when visiting the city
R. C.
Great choice of drinks, especially belgian bottles and craft beer, and great food set above an outstanding off licence. Very small so expect to sit next to strangers in this quirky bar, staff seem very knowledgeable and friendly. All in all a great experience.
M. S.
If you came to York for its medieval charm, then this is the pub for you. With exposed beams, old worn benches with animal throw rugs, and hunted beasts mounted on its walls, it's got all of the character of a 14th century feasting hall. Staff was friendly, and the platters of food were immense. Easy to share.
G. M.
You will love the atmosphere. Had to come here 2 times to manage to get a table but I would try again if I had to. The animals on the wall look judgmental in the beginning but after the third beer they get super friendly. Say hi to the antelope from me. She knows...
D. R.
Excellent pub but need deep pockets. Needless to say very tourist inclined perhaps.
S. B.
Improvised a gluten free meal when I asked for one. Large selection of gluten free beers. Well worn decor. You'll either love it out hate it.
A. L.
Great beer and food, as always.
Nice relaxed place, plenty of space to sit and sample the delights!
L. V.
Fun bar to try some special beers. The decoration is fun and don't forget to have a look in the basement. The room downstairs near the restrooms is interesting to say least. 😬😁
J. S.
Sensational selection of beers, ciders & spirits spanning the three ground and basement rooms. Upstairs is like stumbling into the best hunting-lodge meets micro-pub you could possibly imagine. Food is always to notch and a good selection of beers on tap.
Always make a stop at the HotTM when in York!
K. T.
The beer was so good I had another one. Worth a visit if you like beer and/or taxidermy.
M. M.
Very quirky lovely place to have a nice ale or wine.
G. W.
Great place for a drink and a snack. Excellent selection of alcohol including rare international drinks
A. B.
Awesome staff, great tasting food. A must visit
D. R.
Great beer and spirit selection. Lovely staff. Really cool place!
T. B.
Amazing medieval beer sampling, great home cooked food. Fur lined pews, old school bowls of stew. Great cloudy ale. What's not to like?
J. F.
Excellent food, excellent beer, excellent environment
J. C.
Great place, full of character and some different ales to try. A little tight on space but we were lucky to find a table and staff and clientele were friendly. We had already eaten but what we saw looked amazing and would like to return to try. An enjoyable couple of hours 🤗
R. B.
Possibly the best pub/beer shop I have ever been! To start off you walk through an incredible can and bottle shop with more choice than I have ever seen before, if your lucky and it's not too busy, you won't have a to wait long to go upstairs into the small yet amazing bar area. The walls are a sight to see with a huge array of stuffed and mounted animal heads along side the original wooden beams, candles burn on all tables and the atmosphere is special and cozy to say the least. Then comes the beer choice, beavertown on tap is a rarity and was quickly ordered, my partner even got to select a draft German beer from her favourite Oktoberfest brewery which I have never seen on tap in the UK. All served in the correct glasses by some of the friendliest and coolest staff of any pub/bar I have been in. If Google rating would allow 6 stars I would still want to select 9! Fan of good beer and visiting York? If you don't visit here atleast once then you have wasted your trip!
E. C.
Great platter, great beer, great vibe.
K. M.
After days of searching for some Christmas Belgian Beers I finally found them all under one roof and at really great prices so I didn't have to place 5 different beer orders.
Really impressed with the fast delivery, and bottles were well packed for transit 👌
Thank you, will be ordering again!
S. þ. J.
A very good selection of alcohol downstairs good platers upstairs well worth a visit
M. E.
A cracking beer bar on Yorks Stonegate. By far one of the best bars for Belgian and international beer in the country. My only suggestion would be... is every case ale and most keg being an IPA a little too much? Some variety wouldn't go amiss
L. M.
I have been here many times in the past and always loved it. Came yesterday for the first time since before covid and felt right at home. I had the Venison Pie and Mash and it was absolutely delicious and the Venison was pure melt in the mouth. My friend had the Beef and Ale Stew and she said hers was delicious too and it had so much meat in it for the low price which was great. It was her first time here and she definitely wants to come back.
They accept card payment only so please be aware of this before you go but I only ever pay by card anyway so no bother for me.
Tasty food, friendly service and great medieval decor.
N. K.
Best place for beer, cider, wine and good food. Such a selection to choose from.
A.
I absolutely love this place. It has a bottle shop downstairs & a small ish bar upstairs. In the bottle shop you can buy what you want & take it upstairs to drink, at a dearer price of course. To get to the bar there are steep steps but once up there it's worth it. There are a lot of unusual Ciders & beers 🍻 on offer some of them very strong a.b.v. It's a very old place they have the original wooden beam's that are over 650 years old & have animal head's on the wall. They have Yorks smallest kitchen & the food that comes out of there is amazing 🙂 I would highly recommend the madness platter. The staff are lovely & helpful. The only downside is the music 🎵 that was playing this time I was there which was heavy rock music, not to my taste really but never mind. Oh & the toilets are downstairs so if you are a bit drunk it can be fun lol. I highly recommend this place & it's always the first place I come for a drink when I'm in York.
h. u.
Fantastic setting, great location, and excellent beer and food.
T. w.
Defenilty my favourite bar In York. Sadly I never chance to check out the bottle shop. But had a cracking beer upstairs talked craft beer with lovely couple next to me.
This is a must visit for any craft ale fans visiting York.
C. U.
Came just for the medieval timber frame, but the burgers are a revelation.
In fact, if you’re visiting York and don’t come here, you’re an idiot.
Yes, that’s right… you… an idiot.
J. W.
Small quirky upstairs bar, if you din't know it was there you would miss. Although we didn't taste the food there were plenty of people eating. Great atmosphere with friendly staff.
A. R.
Lovely staff and for the quality of the sharing platters they could easily charge double for them!!
D. S.
Free WiFi. Excellent selection of beers. Not cheap. There's a take out price and a drink in price, the latter for the bar upstairs presumably.
R. M.
Great little bar with a nice atmosphere. Staff were super friendly and offered a lot of advice and suggestions for what they had on tap. Food from the tiny kitchen was also great!
T. C.
HTM is a place I always try to visit when in York and the atmosphere is different everytime, always in a good way. It gets busy so you may need to mingle on your feet for a while. The place and its staff are chilled and BoHo and the range of drinks will keep you there a while. Recommended
K. H.
Excellent wee pub with a great atmosphere and an amazing selection of beers, ales and spirits. Friendly service. Not suitable for people with mobility issues due to the steep stirs up to the bar and down to the toilets.
S.
Great selection of real ales, whiskey, gin in the shop. Don't forget to visit their bar upstairs. Check out the whiskey, Gin etc downstairs.
Recommended
If the bar is full they have another premises locally.
P. R.
Pretty good, loved the aesthetic and drinks were pretty great!
Lovely team and cosy feel!
T. M.
Great find of a pub and a cool history lesson with the building and the rafters! Huge gin selection and great beer options.
K. F.
Beautiful little pub atop a shop, very cosy and the selection of beers is fantastic. The service is friendly and helpful. Would love to go back when we're in the area.
T. D.
A truly amazing, and truly unique place ! A great selection of beers served in fabulous surroundings. We really enjoyed it in there, the staff were all brilliant ! (Hi Tommy).
We then got some "take away" from the shop downstairs too.
If you're in York it's a must do... superb
D. C.
This arm of the business is a small retail shop with a bar upstairs. Didn't do the bar, but called by for some bottled beers.
Very well informed displays, ok prices. Found most of what I went in for.
I think there's a larger store somewhere else in York, but on the way past this one, worth a visit.
N. H.
Pass through a well stocked shop front to a small but cosy upstairs bar which specializes in craft beers and ciders. The downstairs had a vast glass cabinet collection of gins and whiskey. A must visit place.
B. O.
Incredible beer selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Excellent location. Characterful bar /pub.
L. B.
An amazing treasure trove of beers. If in York a must visit
J. D.
Excellent company, extensive range of drinks. Great price and swift delivery. Definitely be ordering again. Highly recommended 👍🍷
A. M.
Lovely setting for a few decent beers
M. M.
Quirky pub nestled above an astoundingly massive selection of beers and spirits.
M. P.
Simply amazing variety of drinks. Great prices, especially the bottled German lager. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and cool vibe about the place! Not to be missed!
R. H.
One of the best bars in York with an excellent beer selection. Also pretty good pizza.
M. R.
This is such a great find, right in the centre of York. Yes it is small, but so different, so original. Amazing food at great prices, good choice of drinks and well worth a visit.
N. W.
Can find them on Stonegate about halfway up. The shop is downstairs and the pub upstairs. They said there was a light downstairs to inform people if there is space upstairs but we couldn't find it. Only a few spaces upstairs but if you get a space it's really nice. Very quirky with the old roof beams and animal heads on the walls. Really good selection of beers and lagers. I had one called Mongozo Mango and it was lovely. Prices are reasonable and you can try before you buy with quite a few of the drinks on the board.
S. F.
Fantastic Selection of Beers. Polite and helpful staff
M. C.
Friendly staff and good selection of alcoholic drinks.
M. G.
Superb beer shop on the ground floor, and small bar upstairs with around 8 beers on offer. Quirky decor. Lost a star because there wasn't a very diverse tap list when we went (most were this week's fad, neipa).
G. W.
I don't know what it is about this place, it could be the impeccable, friendly and informative staff, the incredible selection of good quality beer, cider and alcohol or the awesome and authentic setting. It just creates a place where you want to be your happiest self. Genuinely priceless. P.S. we really liked the ordering online, and Warner honeybee.
A. D.
Nice pub, very artisan....but dont like the dead animal theme...but the food is excellent especially the cheese and beer soup. Beer is cheap
E. s.
Highlight of York. Absolutely loved this place - great selection of beer, friendly and helpful staffing, cool layout, oh and the wine was cheap as well!
C. s.
Proper old fashioned pub. Limited choice on tap, but very wide selection of bottled options downstairs that you can take up. Food is good too.
Some of the drinks are higher priced than other places, but the selection is probably unmatched.
K. N.
Great choice of beers and snacks
S. T.
Unusual quirky upstairs above a bottle shop.
Unusual selection of draught & bottles.
Food was outstanding & staff very friendly.
P. N.
Fantastic pub, short on space, big on quality. The food is good, and when you take into consideration the space its made in its fantastic too. There's a few stairs between pint and pee,but if you can't manage em its probably time to stop drinking anyway
T. H.
Oooooft where do I start, you walk through a tab shop to get here, upstairs the decor is.. Let's say old fashioned and you will be confronted by a range of quality beers, ranging from real ales, craft beers and Belgians also a decent range of spirits thrown I to the bargain
C. S.
I would give the beers a 5, but the food a 3. You can definitely go for just the beers though!
G. M.
Great place to get a sampling of gins from either the bar or the many small or full size bottles to pick from. This is one of two restaurants by this name, so you aren't crazy
J. K.
There are two locations. Be sure to go to the one with the liquor store at street level. Excellent beer selection and decor. When York it should be a must do.
B. D.
Always a fun place to be. Nice outdoor seating with great people watching to pair nicely with tasty beers and friendly service. The bar snacks menu is also really fun, I need to try the platters some time for sure!
K. R.
Our favourite pub when we visit York! Hidden at the back of a beer shop it’s so cosy and the ambience is awesome. Great vibe, great drinks, great service. A must visit in York!
C. J.
Great cosy pub. Nice stag with knowledge of what they sell. Good music. Definitely worth a visit.
S.
Looks like a small beer shop from outside but enter this Tardis like place and you are in some medieval beer hall. Ok I get carried away . Nice beer selection and friendly service.
L. R.
Great selection of craft beers and spirits, unfortunately the bar was shut when we called due to pandemic.
B. P.
Delicious food and beers. Amazing friendly service.
C. S.
amazing shop with selection of wine and beers, best beer i ever had !!! definitely worth visit when you comes to york, this place right next to betty's tea room on stonegate, the street is must visit as well.
A. R.
Amazing beer selection and great staff
E. D.
For curious and experienced alike. Trembling madness offers alcohol of all shapes and sizes. The staff are well versed in the drinks and helpful. If your not sure what's what they will be able to point you in the right direction. You will find interesting drinks for yourself or others. If you like an interesting drink then definitely worth a look.
G. R.
Decent selection of ales, cosy and authentic atmosphere if a bit pricey. Try the unusual, super-strong (45%+) beers which taste more like whiskey!
T. S.
Superb beer and amazing food. Great atmosphere to go with it as well. We will be going back on our next visit.
E. P.
Excellent beer selection downstairs where we got some awesome mead. Upstairs the pub is super charming and made our stay in York incredibly memorable. The beers were good and the food was great! The decor and exposed wood with a fireplace was incredibly memorable. Great atmosphere, food, and drinks. I would absolutely love to go back.
J. S.
Lives up to the hype. Gotta come here!
M. B.
Love this place Have eaten here for several years now Never disappointed unless my choice not available as it is so popular.Extensive range of ales and spirits downstairs too highly recommended to visit for food a drink and view of what is available to buy .Be warned you could spend several hours here xxxx
D. M.
Absolutely superb place to eat and drink. Great food and very knowledge staff. Some great craft beers available on tap in bottles or cans. If you miss anything in York on your visit make sure this isn't it.
S. T.
Amazing selection and very friendly staff. Popped in to have a look, then bought a few bottles. Then returned later for the pub located upstairs. The staff are very friendly and helpful with the wide range of drinks available.
J. W.
Simply stunning building with an outrageous selection of ales, ciders and spirits. Very knowledgeable, passionate and friendly staff.
V. T.
Very friendly staffs and great range of beers etc
L. M.
I was in here on Sunday, love this bar, staff as always so friendly and always happy to have a chat, the bar oozes History, I ordered a cheeseboard for two, oh my goodness it was huge but so worth it.
Thank you guys for making us feel so welcome xx
I. M.
Venison pie under a tenner and 2 pints of coconut stout I was full to bostin
M. C.
There's more beer here than you can shake a stick at! Rear gems from all corners of the world.
B. F.
Great food, fabulous beer and excellent music in a haven of joy away from the crowds.
A. B.
Great gem in the shambles, excellent range of beers and food to boot. Bottle shop below has some good mid range spirits available. Definitely worth a visit after a food upstairs. VERY friendly and helpful staff. All manner of drink based questions answered and some great local advice too
R. G.
Great atmosphere and amazing choice of beers
J. F.
Walk up the rickety stairway to heaven and enjoy a multitude of beers. Some decent simple food is served.
L. S.
We were in this afternoon and had a fantastic few pints and some nibbles (tapas/bar food is out of this world). The guys who helped us (can't remember the names, sorry guys!) were fantastic and really knew their beer. The beer was kept and poured to the highest standards and the place itself is well worth a visit. It's quirky and relaxing and THE place to visit if you come to York and you like beer. Enjoy!
S. T.
Great beer selection, fantastic food.
T.
Massive choice of craft ales, gins, whisky and rum. Dont forget to look at their range of viking themed meads. However the biggest attraction for me is their massive selection of samples. Instead of paying £60 plus on a whisky you might not like you can buy a sample bottle first of most things. I purchased 10 samples then went back and purchased a lovely peaty whisky.
K. L.
Unusual place with unusual and lovely ales, including sour ones which I love. Set above a beer shop with an astonishing range of beers and gins!
K. G.
Loved it! So many great cocktails, mead 😍 and fantastic selection of beer.....we didn't eat but it smelled sooooo good. Definitely coming back for food on my next trip
N. H.
If you find a better pub in York than this please let me know. But pretty sure you won't. It's a bit of a hidden gem. It's always busy but the people who are here were looking for it - or lucky enough to stumble upon after checking out the beer in the shop downstairs. So it's a nice crowd and nice, relaxed atmosphere.
There's always a great selection of beers and ales. And reasonably priced pub food.
And all that is excluding the decor and vibe which is historic and unique. Easily one of my favourite pubs. Period. If you're in York it's a must visit.
S. M.
Absolutely amazing selection of stouts, porters, ipas, blondes and all the above. Went for a boozy look around, found some great beers. Decided to head upstairs to sit down and have some food, the girls that were working at that time get the ABCD award (above and beyond the call of duty) amazing service, super polite, don't how they did what they did with so few staff... Top job!!! #fastfoodworkersrights.
S. P.
Excellent beer bottle shop with a small quirky tap room upstairs.
C. h.
Excellent beer and cider the food is also very good
M. R.
Absolute must visit if you like great beers - real beers - tasty pub food platters and taxidermy
I. W.
Small but perfectly formed. Great selection of beer
.. s.
Great choice of beers, cosy pub and friendly staff. Down stairs shop has a fantastic range of beers to buy.
R. H.
Nice beers, tables a little close together for comfort with covid stuff going on but we moved and we're happy then. Drinks good and reasonably priced.
D. L.
Superb range of beers from all over the globe and some very local ones. Downstairs is a little hidden gem of a spirit shop Staff know their onions about all of the products. It's one of the places we always visit when in town.
P. G.
Lovely unique place with great food and beer. Well worth a visit when in York
C. R.
Can't fault this place. Selection of beers is outstanding and all at a good price. Love it. The quirky atmosphere makes it fabulous.
D. S.
If you know, you know. Top little spot hidden away
v.
Great selection of beers that are reasonably priced too.
M. M.
Insanely good selection of beers here to take out! Very much enjoyed this one!
D. E. (.
Beer ship downstairs, pub upstairs. Read nice atmosphere and interesting food. Huge amount of craft beer available on tap and in the shop. Also spirits and some wines.
L. H.
A place of character - small and perfect. Great selection of drinks, caters for everyone and some great beers.
J. M.
Oh my!
What a fantastic pub with great food, music and staff!
You have to be here!
This is the place you have to see!
A. H.
Love this little bar. Loads of taxidermy to see and discuss as we did. Various bottle beers on offer and fraught too. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food platters are amazing. It’s only small so if you’ve got a big party book a table. We were early in the day so plenty of space.
C. W.
Fantastic place. Knowledgeable staff. Gluten free beers. A must-visit.
A. W.
Amazing as always. Nice and cozy, with a great selection or alcohol. A place I always visit every time I visit York.
L. G.
Excellent, older-style pub located above a liquor store. The beer is delicious, as is the food, and I would highly recommend this place.
I went on a Tuesday evening around 8pm, and there was hardly any seating available. The pub has a medieval look to it with a lot of eclectic decorations on the walls, which I really enjoyed.
They were practically out of food by the time I ordered, but I did manage to get one of their platters - The Madman, which featured some outstanding old Cheddar, pork pies, bread and garlic butter, sliced chicken and ham, along with a few other delectable snacks. It went so well with my fantastic IPA.
I can understand why this place was as busy as it was.
C. M.
Awesome food selection from this tiny wee bar/kitchen. The platters in particular are worth a visit alone. Very good draft ipa/independent brewery selection, and the decor is enjoyably mental too. Staff are always very helpful and knowledgeable of their beer selection and comparisons. Plus there's an awesome beer/mead/spirit shop on the 2 levels beneath.
If you're in york and you appreciate nice beer, independent bars or shops, and fancy a good, filling, informal bite to eat, I would highly recommend Trembling Madness.
R. H.
Incredible place. Fantastic selection of beers and very welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended
J. G.
Love it! Great beers and great food! One of my favourite places in York! 🍺🍷🍽️
S. H.
Great atmosphere, great beer, good location.
B. L.
One of the best bottle shops in the country, and probably my favorite. And a great place to have a drink too. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable and the choices of drink are exceptional.
M. W.
Great Beer Bottle Shop and pub. Some of the Whiskies are a bit overpriced though.
T. R.
They have an impressive wall of slain beasts upstairs, stare into their eyes as you drink for the full experience.
There's also a lot of cool drinks downstairs.
Would recommend!
M. D.
Brilliant find. Great selection of beers and spirits both in the shop and pub. A must for those with a taste for the different.
J. W.
Amazing place, beer selection is awesome! Friendly knowledgeable staff. Building full of character. This place will always be better than their new spot, not slating the other bar, its great just not as good as the original :)
J. L.
What a beautiful little bar hidden away. Definitely be going again.
D. M.
Great bar on the first floor. Great beer and excellent food. Don't miss the spirits in the basement. Excellent beer selection on ground floor.
W. G.
Great welcome, awesome choice and food looks amazing too.
J. A.
Extremely helpful and friendly and the best choice of drinks I've ever seen, just Amazing!
J. F.
Ace craft beer place in an amazing building. Well done guys.
P. C.
Amazing place with amazing beers. We always make sure we visit here everytime we go to York
J. S.
I was nearly overcome with excitement. I love beer and this maybe the greatest beer place I've been to. The shop on the ground floor could easily have several hundred different beers for sale- see the panoramic photo.
Upstairs is a medieval tavern well worth the visit. There are several beers on tap as well and bottles & can.
M. C.
Really good place staff are friendly nice beer
M. C.
Always visit here when in York. Great little bar above the shop. Good selection of beers and if you can't find one on/behind the bar that you like, you can go down stairs to the shop and select one of the hundreds of different ones there. Food looks good but not eaten here yet. Hard to get a table sometimes. Not suitable for those unable to walk up the stairs.
P.
Tasty pint, lovely decor upstairs
N. M.
Awesome selection of beer in shop (as well as other things). Great people working there and even better pub upstairs!
A. M.
Absolutely love this place the customer service is second to none. The food is so good, I had the burger 🍔 it was so good & I have been to a lot of burger places. The selection of unusual beers that is on is out of this world. I have been here a number of times now & will definitely be returning for many years, it's my favourite place to drink in York. 😊
J. M.
Ace little pub with amazing beers and an excellent vibe. Can even buy beers from the shop downstairs and take them upstairs.
S. C.
This isn't your average booze shop, it's so much more. The staff are very friendly and helpful, as you'll need it due to the vast selection of drinks they have on sale. If you venture upstairs you'll be pleasantly surprised by their bar. It's a little on the small side but the drink and food they offer make it worth a visit. Finally, the basement is where they showcase the good stuff.
G. W.
Just brilliant!!
My first visit to the Stonegate one, couldn't get in on the last couple of York visits. A tap list of my favourites, staff are great fun and the food is spectacular.
F. L.
Iconic bottle shop that doubles as a craft beer pub upstairs. Rustic, viking decor with high ceilings, mounted animals, and great craft beer. A must-visit if you're into you beer like I am. Staff were friendly and attentive to top it all off.
It can get busy, and seating is limited, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
R. S.
Best burger I have ever had at a great price and the staff were awesome just loving the whole experience
L. B.
Sooooo many beers to choose from! I was in heaven and the prices were really reasonable!
B. W.
Every time go to York have to visit for drinks upstairs and to buy lots of mead can't recommend it enough
P. T.
Excellent venue, fantastic choice of drinks and a genuine local crowd. This is a place lacking in a few of the idiots of a Saturday night and plentiful of the decent bunch!
P.
Excellent and quirky pub/off licence. Fantastic beers and ales but not cheap. Food is amazing, particularly as its prepared in a TINY area behind an already small bar area. Loads of character, staff really friendly and helpful and I could easily go bankrupt if I lived in York as I'd be in here every day.
Watch out for the very steep stairs and low ceilings but for me this just adds to that character. Absolutely massive array of alcohol to take out from two floors of the shop.
P. W.
Top drawer - I loved both the upstairs bar and the downstairs bottle shop. Loads of character, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a huge range of beers to go at. Their other venue across town is great too!
M. N.
Good Beer and Decent Tapas/Small plate food
B.
If I travel to York I make a point of calling in here, they have a fantastic selection of all sorts of beers/wines/spirits. The bar on the top floor is cosy, the original architecture left showing adds to the feel. The food served is simple but great tasting, and is prepared in the small bar which leaves the room smelling of great cooking food
B. B.
Awesome beer and spirits shop. The choice is immense! Great little bar upstairs in this quirky historic building. Lovely snacks and a very friendly service.
I. M.
Lovely pub full of character, great craft beers!
S. R.
Fantastic place we found by accident. The most amazing beer selection I've seen outside of Bruges. We ended up staying for lunch and our meals were all yummy. We will definitely come here in future when we're in York.
D. A.
Very cosy, had some great nights here. Brilliant selection of drinks and cigars etc from all over downstairs. They have been delivering and allowing pickups during lock-down, very responsive and have certainly made this lock-down easier for me!
R. E.
Great craft beer bar, with its own built in whisky shop! Win win!!!
W. F.
Amazing. Quirky, great range of beers and amazing food. Go every time I'm in York and as I've been working there for the last 8 weeks I go in every week.
K. W.
Litterly the best bar I've ever been to in my life. The staff are excellent 👌 a massive selection and great atmosphere oh and lovely food to ! I would come back to york just to go to this bar!
C. J.
Beer drinkers heaven. First class beer selection at the bar, excellent choices of beer on tap. Too many to mention and constantly changing.
Unbelievably good shop in the basement with a huge array of quality Ales.
Looked like a good cafe on the ground floor but didn't get a chance to check it out.
Decor in the bar 'different' but in keeping with the image of the place.
S.
Great staff and a wonderful selection of craft beer. Their warehouse houses a greater selection and can be ordered online. Staff are very helpful and are patient when queried about different beers. Highly recommend for any beer aficionado.
P. J.
Fantastic hidden gem! Quirky to say the least. Toilets double as a display for the multitude of drinks available to buy. Whilst upstairs is small, it wasn't claustrophobic. Selection of ales and ciders was pretty good too. Will try food next time
j. h.
Brilliant place for a drink hidden above a great beer shop. Always busy and sometimes you have to wait to go in as they limit the amount of people in to make it a nicer experience. I wish more places did that. Great selection of beers and member of staff are good. Will be going on every trip to York.
P. B.
The new premises are much nicer (The toilets in particular!) And far more spacious. While some effort has been made to keep some of the quirkiness of the original bar some thing has been lost in translation. It's lovely, but will attract more of hipster crowd than the beery crowd from before. The shop is as always fantastically stocked and the staff are more than willing to find a beer to suit you. Would recommend if you like beer and are visiting York.
S. M.
I chose this bar simply because the name sounded uniquely strange. It lived up to that expectation! If you're tired of the same old style place to grab a beer, this is the perfect answer.
The bar is located upstairs of a liquor store that you walk through. The staff is incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about their wide selection of beer. They also recommend the venison pie when I asked for something traditionally English to eat, and I couldn't have been happier. The pie crust was flaky and had a wonderful flavor.
If the day comes that I ever decide to move to York, this will certainly be my hangout!
M. B.
Fantastic. Amazing beer selection for enjoying there or take away. Nice ambiance to hang out for a bit. Brought my wife and daughter on a Sunday midday, felt comfortable. Good bakery, deli, tapas options.
E. W.
Always a fantastic atmosphere with a huge selection of drinks and tasty bar food. Staff friendly and entertaining. Well worth a visit.
O. L.
Really great place to have a drink, entrance is via the shop and up to the first floor. Good looking selection of ales on the bar and I’m sure you’re allowed to buy beer from the shop downstairs and consume on premises if you wish. Varied food menu prepared behind the bar which always looks good, although I’ve never tried it. Views out the window to the minster are special once you find them. Oh yes, taxidermy!
W. o. C.
The bar is upstairs, you know when there's a table available as in the groundfloor shop the ceiling light is green, otherwise red at all other times.
Card payments only. The staff were quite helpful and there was a good range of drinks to try.
A great place to have a drink and relax with friends
C. M.
We had drinks, plenty to chose from! And plenty to buy in the shop downstairs. Interesting building and decor, enjoyed it and would come back.
j. B.
An experience you must try if in York. Fabulous.
S. D.
Great atmosphere. Great range of beer and cider. Fab food.
M. L.
Wow a craft beer fans toy shop, 100's of choices...plus bar upstairs
M. P.
Brilliant atmosphere, staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Quite like the app. Food looks really nice, I didn't have any so can't honestly comment. Well worth a visit, they have a shop downstairs that sells a lot of the beers from upstairs.
B.
Fantastic place to go in York. Ales and Cider from all over the world, the pub upstairs is awesome with some fantastic food on offer too. The pork pie there is the best I have had in York hands-down. Great place to shop for gifts for someone who loves beer as there is such a great selection you can get 4/5 as a gift box!
Prices are a bit steep but it's the only place in York of its kind!
Must visit in York!
A. M.
Recommend the cheese board and any of the Meads (ginger was my favorite).
m. S. #.
Cracking place for a beer, staff frendly and helpfull, large selection of Everything alcahol wise,
J. L. (.
I mean... I've been here 50+ times. Why wouldn't I drag every single friend to my favourite place to drink in York. They have bar snacks and food, as well as sharing platters and (god help you) coffee. A 7 tap selection with 4 cask taps. Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is friendly and jovial. It does get crowded and its a small place. The store downstairs also stocks lots of drinks, including spirits and other imported drinks.
E. L.
Fabulous place, great food, nice people!!
I. Y.
Wow, what a remarkable place! The medieval building is on three levels, with the top floor the most memorable and quirky. One wall stands out as it is festooned with the mounted heads of dozens of animals ranging in size from moles to large deer. There is a very extensive range of real ales and Belgian beers and many are unusual and delicious. It is a very busy and lively establishment.
V. N.
Outstanding variety of IPA's and awesome food
M. Z.
Great selection of beers, quirky surroundings, and decent enough pub food. I tried the beef stew which wasn't the best I ever had (the meat was slightly dry, and a bit too salty), but came in a very generous portion, with good sized chips.
Altogether a pleasant experience.
J. F.
Very unusual surrounds at both sites. Very friendly staff, great beers and top breakfast too. We'll be visiting again next time we're in York
G. W. (.
Probably my favourite bar in York and so happy they extended the lease. My go-to place for a quick after work drink or to take visitors to this fine city. The staff are always happy, helpful and often humorous. The selection of beer is amazing. If they don't have it upstairs, no problem. Go down to the shop and pay a little to take it to the bar area. The animal heads on the sloping walls are more photographed (and probably talk more sense) than me.
E. K.
Very cosy and quirky place. Great portion size and value for money. The food is out of this world. Very friendly staff, would definitely recommend a visit.
I.
Interesting whisky and spirit selection in the cellar, they have a good selection of miniatures to sample as well before making the plunge on a full bottle. Tasty Belgian beers and informative staff in the bar area upstairs, we didn't eat but the food that came out to other tables looked good and all plates were finished.
n. k.
Tremendous amount of different drinks to choose from and a bar upstairs. On this occasion we were not able to get into the bar because so busy.
J. M.
Great atmosphere and surrounding. Ordered on of their platters - was very good. Friendly service and good advice on what beer to order. It is very small (not much you can do about that in York) so be prepared to queue or go outside of peak times.
M. P.
Good selection of beers, great atmosphere with friendly and welcoming staff.
A. D.
A visit to York is considered incomplete without buying something from this great bottle shop (and pub) as far as I'm concerned. Great choice... I bought a couple of German beers to tick off my list from my book... 1001 Beers To Drink Before You Die.... well worth the risk.
a.
What a superb place! The shop contains an amazing range of beers, ales, gins and whiskies. On the top floor we have a bar/pub with some draught ales that I suspect you won't find anywhere else in York or further afield. Very busy and great atmosphere. Don't be disappointed if there's nowhere to sit though! A fair few people climb the stairs then go straight back down because of this! We didn't eat but the food looked excellent. The whole vibe and decor reminded us of a Belgium style of bar. Old world with friendly and efficient staff. Highly recommended. We will return!
D. S.
Great hidden gem. Tucked away nicely (you walk through the shop and go upstairs to find the bar).
Average prices for this area. Good selection of IPA's. Food looked good.
Highly recommend if your looking for a nice homely vibe and a good drink.
p. b.
Interesting choice of beers and well priced and carefully thought out food.
g.
A pretty cool place but attracts the 'pretentious moi crowd' and hipsters on the verge of selling out for a middle management career in the 'ivory tower' plus 2 people behind the bar high fived each other.
L. J.
Odd little bar upstairs from the beer shop. Lots of taxidermy on the wall which is a bit weird. Beer is awesome though!
K. D.
I'm a big fan of this place! I adore homely pub grub and this place smashes it out the park! My only gripe is there isn't a huge vegetarian selection meaning I don't get to go as often as I'd like due to my veggie other half. Amazing beer selection too, you can buy a bottle from the extensive collection in the shop downstairs and choose to drink it in the bar! Brilliant!!
L. N.
Great pub and cafe, with a bottle shop too. Quirky. The beer was good, especially the craft. We really enjoyed the deli boards we shared. The tapas looked good too. Would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere different and interesting.
J. E.
Cool place. As a vegan ale lover really good to see the vegan friendly beers identified on the board/menu.
C. T.
Excellent food and beer in a cosy upstairs room. Great choice of off sales, bottled continental beer heaven.
J. S.
Great selection of beers and reasonably priced
C. B.
Very unique small bar on 2nd floor in the original Madness. A *must* to visit while in York but know that it is very popular and gets crowded in normal times (before Covid). Large beer and Mead assortment on Ground level is open during lockdown for Take-Away.
J.
Really cool, old and authentic place. Can get very busy at times and at £18 for 3 beers it can be a expensive pint. That said the beer selection is top notch so don't mind paying the extra cost. The platters are amazing. Well worth a visit in York.
R. G.
Great beers, great food, great prices. We had a really good time here sampling some excellent beers. The room is really nice - timber frames, wooden floor and furniture, interesting decorations on the walls. But really, it's about the beer for me and it really hit the spot here. We also needed feeding and this didn't fail to deliver either. I had the sausage and mash with mushy peas - nothing fancy, but it was done well and there was plenty of it. Will be coming back if/when we're in the area.
O. B.
Really great little place,I've wanted to try for years. Heard so much about it from friends and visitors, it didn't disappoint. Great vibe, nice and cosy, staff were very helpful aside from a sarcastic comment about the size of the place Vs the beers on tap. Sarcasm is never going to wash well. Probably just a joke, but it came off wrong, although after reading some of the review responses on here, I'm not sure.
I'll definitely be back, probably today!
j. j.
Great selection of drinks including a wall of mead good selection of tobacco products, including proper cigars, chew, tobacco and cigarettes . The small pub upstairs is well stoked ,reasonable priced and serve food. The bartender chap was quite pleasant and informative of drinks and the city.
S.
This place is great, downstairs is a shop and upstairs is a pub. in the shop you have a wide variety of beers ales and ciders. Upstairs is a quirky pub packed with history. The food little while to get to us but when it did it was totally worth it. If you are around this is a place you should definitely check out.
k. k.
Spoiled for choice with the fantastic range of beers in the bar a d the theme of ghe bar is awesome 👌 and the choice of beers mead and spirits is just unbelievable 👌
M. T.
Fantastic array of real ales ....a potent 10.5 percent by northen monk is a must try. Awesome staff...my kinda pub.
E. S.
Fantastic atmosphere, great choice of drinks. Great, friendly staff
f. j.
This is an ancient and quirky bar serving lovely craft beers and nice food with a superb, "rustic country kitchen" style presentation. Natural wood, terracotta etc platters... with naturally colourful ingredients and garnishes although we did not eat ourselves on this occasion
r. d.
A bit freaky with a motley crew behind and before the bar but feels safe and relaxed with an alternative vibe. Decent selection of beers and a view of the ancient Minster through a skylight window. Old decor and very old building if that helps you decide.
S. N.
Really interesting pub ! Great range of beers to buy as offsales and a good menu to buy to drink in. Beautiful Elizabethan beams meet medieval walls as a backdrop ,not so sure on the stuffed animal heads but it kinda fits. Staff were friendly and polite and added to an all together great afternoon in a great city
V. O.
Sooooo good! Food was amazing. We had the fish platter and the bangers&mash with mushy peas. Top pub food will definitely be back and they also have an amazing selection of beers&ciders! Very cozy and authentic British atmosphere!
G. S.
Fantastic place for IPA drive drinks and platters. Hidden gem in the shambles
K. O.
Lovely drinks. Thanks Lisa!
B. S.
Awesome, friendly bartenders. Warm, cozy vibe. Delicious snacks and food. Cool mountain lodge-style decor. Excellent draught beer selection. Reasonable prices. Will definitely be back next time I'm in York.
P. P.
Visited both venues . Great selection of craft beers. Loved the atmosphere . The new place is ace . Young lad behind the bar ( looks like Nick Grimshaw - his first day upstairs bar ) did brilliantly . So polite . Delicious cheese board
O. v.
A quaint but well loved ale house right by the cathedral. If you've tried the haunch of venison in Salisbury then this will be right up your street!
Lovely selection of beer and spirits, friendly staff and the noise of the cathedral bell ringing. Awesome place!
E. T.
The House of Trembling Madness is so awesome, I once got off a train from London to Edinburgh to grab a swift half pint there before running back to catch the last train 45 mins later! Words can't describe how fantastic it is!
J. W.
If you can get a table, well worth a trip upstairs for a pint or even a meal. Huge selection of beers not often seen on tap in the UK. With COVID there are even fewer tables... So with a spot of luck, give it a go.
S. F.
Brilliant little pub with an excellent selection of beers both upstairs and downstairs in the shop. Knowledgeable, humerous and engaging staff who appear to really enjoy their work. A must visit pub if York. As it's small and very popular you may need to queue at peak times but it's worth the wait.
B. K.
This place is just awesome, no matter what you want it's good for it all beer, wine, spirits, Gin in a massive way as with all bars these days and the food is tip top too! It has a great atmosphere and ambience, cool decor, with people having a great time and chit chat. The staff are really friendly and will give ya a hand pointing you in the right direct for your preferred tipple! Will go back time and again.
M. L.
This gorgeous hidden gem was my favourite place to eat and drink in York, could have spent the day there. Great old ales, delicious platters of fresh and varied foods, quirky spaces and super happy and friendly staff. Loved it.
B. M.
Incredibly quirky with a unique character- this place gets busy so you may have to queue!
F. S.
This is a unique bar / pub / eatery above a liquor shop on one of the older streets of York. The bar area is up a steep flight of stairs and very quirky, with seating including old pews and much taxidermy on the walls. Its very small, so often someone is manning the stairs to regulate entries. They serve food although we didn't try this. They also do bar snacks and have a good choice of cider, beers, spirits and wine. The shop has a vast array of beers and spirits. Its a great place but expect it to be busy.
F. K.
Love this place. The vibe is spot on! Grabbing drinks from the shop downstairs for an extra 1.25 is a great deal and offers the best beer selection in town! Nibbles were delicious too! Cheese plate was amazing and full of interesting choices!
S. 8.
Great beers in a very impressive space. The food was top notch too
