Reviews of Shambles Tavern
V. K.
Love this place and we always visit when we are in York. Husband loves the pie and mushy peas and I love the ploughman's, all fantastic and service is always fabulous. Beer garden is great to people watch with a beer or two or to just chill and listen to the live music if they have some on. Well worth a visit. Dog friendly too.
C. R.
Very unique and classic designed tavern with a large, reasonably priced selection of beers and other drinks. Service was friendly and food was great tasting, with great value for money. A wide variety of seating is available inside and out. Was a shame that the kitchen closed early most nights, how ever it's understandable, due to how quite it was during this time of year. I recommend visiting a lunch to not be disappointed.
M.
Lovely venue, friendly knowledgeable staff and great Beer & Gin selection. Was told by a local it can get busy on music nights. Was lovely to sit out under cover with the family.
Thought home made sponge cake was a beer at first.
D.
Lovely old facade, I thought it have the same charm continues inside too. In the ground floor have the same rustic style, I only wish to have more character at upstairs too. I had a cider it tased really good, bit pricey, perhaps couse the location. It was a bit let down or expected more.
G. T.
Nice little place to stop for a drink, especially if you’re a real ale drinker. I’m not, but the guy behind the bar sorted us right out with some nice Rum’s which we drank out the back in their beer garden, which is basically falls onto the Shambles Market.
If you’re in York then you’ll probably be heading for the Shambles anyway so I’d recommend a stop in here!

Really welcoming warm staff, nice warm fresh soup, thankful to had a short rest here while going about the day. Really nice interior to of the old Victoria house!

Old pub, but nice and clean with friendly staff and amazing food!
Good variety of beers.
I recommend the pie with mint sauce.
A. H.
The back bar is a peaceful place away from the tourist hotspot of the street itself. The front bar has several hand pumps and loads of cans and almost doubles up as an off license
S. G.
What a great place this is. We were looking for somewhere dog friendly in York and glad we picked here. Great food, really nice staff and
really accomodating for my dog as well as nice local beer. Really good value. Small beer garden looking on to the square as well if you can get a seat.
I'll visit again when I'm back in York
Great pub to visit overall👍👍
S. L.
Friendly welcoming staff, enjoyed a couple of glasses of mulled wine outside in the beer garden, excellent outdoor heating.
E. P.
Great spot! Great selection of beer on draught and a seemingly endless selection of cans for drinking in or takeaway. We'd been to Brewyork as there was a specific new beer I wanted to try but they didn't have it. Came here and there it was! The guy who served us was lovely, really knowledgeable and happy to take the time to guide me through the beers and advise what I might like based on my tastes. Can't ask for better service!
M. T.
So far, so fun. One man with acoustic guitar singing loads of classics. Crowd living it. Bar is quite small, but I'm too busy singing to care.
R. m.
must stop for a visit if you are in the busy street. tiny wee bar area and can be a pest to try get into the place if people are queuing for the ghost shop. (who knew ghosts were popular) the barman was lovely and very knowledgeable of what he sells and recommended lots of tipples for us. there are plenty seating outside which was great. lots of local gins to test and get thro and lots of craft beers to choose from. would highly recommend it.
j. B.
Fabulous ale House/bottle shop set in the middle of the shambles, lovely.
S. E.
Fantastic pub lovely staff and very friendly regulars welcome myself and my husband bought us both a drink for our wedding anniversary how kind

Coeliac Friendly Pub!!
I found that place by chance as I was walking through York on my day trip and, even though I almost missed it, I saw their board advertising gluten free soup and bread. I came back later that day to have dinner here. Unfortunately, the soup has already sold out at that time, however, they offer other gluten free menus as well. As I am coeliac as well as allergic to dairy and walnuts, I had quite some questions about their dishes and service staff was very friendly and helpful and double checked with the kitchen to make sure all given information was correct. Also, and I was pleasantly surprised by that, they have dedicated fryers for gluten free food to avoid cross-contamination, which is absolutely fantastic (because it is *truly* gluten free!!) and I had the feeling that service staff was very considerate in regard to food allergies.
Due to both allergies, the range I could choose from was quite limited, however, their overall range is diverse and broad, given the little size of this pub. I had eggs with chips and salad, and it was a pleasant, satisfying meal. It was served in a reasonable time to be prepared freshly, it definitely was hot and warming and portion size was just about right. To my taste, the salad could've been a bit larger, as I am a veggie fan. Definitely good value for money!
I recommend this place without a question! It’s cozy and staff is incredibly friendly. I hope I'll be able to come back.

We loved this place! Staff extremely friendly and had a nice feel to it. We popped in for a couple of drinks on our first evening staying in York only to discover they did breakfasts and as we didn't have breakfast included in our hotel we thought we would try it! We were not disappointed had a full English and was excellent. If we were staying in York longer than the one night we would have continued to have breakfast there!
J. B.
Amazing little pub. Super friendly staff. Loads of different drinks which the staff are more the happy to recommend. Would happily drink here every night. 10/10
K. L.
Nice ambient pub, where one can sit outside (or inside if you like) and sup away at a variety of local ales and lagers that they provide. The advice regarding ales is top notch, and the service and craic was pretty good too. I enjoyed the dark stout and people watching outside. I would return!
I. L.
Lovely little bar with friendly locals, excellent out door seating with heating .A wide range of real ales at reasonable prices .definitely recommend this lovely friendly bar .
H. L.
Bar and table service outdoor seating area.
They sell real ale gift sets too
M. T.
Dog friendly pub, very friendly staff and the food looked nice. I could have sat there all day watching the world go by. Enjoyed my golden Eagle beer 🍺. Will return thanks to all.
A. J.
What a gem! No airs and graces just a lovely atmosphere and a cracking range of ales at very reasonable prices. Well worth a visit.
C. C.
2 pints of local brew lager; a Fanta and 2 ploughman's lunches; £33.00ish. Delicious. Excellent service in an authentically presented setting.
Try it.
m. G.
Have no objections to dogs in pubs, I think it's marvellous, but keep them off the seating, good beer though.
I. B.
Great tavern, staff was very helpful, very cosy, made me feel very welcome. The food was good, but could be better seasoned (little to no salt on the fish and on the mush peas, but nothing we could not correct at the table), but the beers were very good, and the tartar sauce was amazing.
Order the onion rings - so crispy and tasty.
E. R.
Called in on Sunday with wife 2 ham salad sandwichs chips onion rings beer and wine absolutely loved it brilliant helpful staff will defo be making regular visits 10/10
v. c.
Very nice place and a great food!
A. S.
Brief visit but seemed ok. Beer good
G. M.
Had a great evening, lice music good beer and friendly staff.
J. R.
Great atmosphere. Fantastic smells and delicious food and drinks. Some unique gift ideas, but be careful, some are a bit pricey! But just enjoy the day!
S. T.
Fun and lively pub located right in the shambles. Good ales and had live music on Friday.
S. S.
Great beer, great staff, also live music!
C. E.
Fantastic! The selection on tap is great and locally sourced. I did not have food but from what I'd seen it appears quality.
The staff are amazing. Very friendly and helpful. Know all about the drinks and created a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
I've spent two nights in york and have come here every day. A must for anyone who likes ales.

K. R.
A cosy, old world pub, with friendly staff, a great range of alcohol and beers, and sheltered outdoor seating (with blankets). Highly recommended for those with gluten intolerances/celiacs as they have a range of beers, stouts, and porters available, even some on tap!
J. R.
Lovely little bar and good choice of beer.
J. P.
Excellent beer selection, good food and friendly knowledgeable staff. Decent music at a good volume. Met some nice dogs too. Can't recommend enough.
Also got a quick pint to takeout for queuing for the ghost shop thing.
M. C.
Lovely little pub with great beer. But where it really excelled is that it enabled me to sit and wait for all the annoying camera wielding tourists (just like me!) that usually fill the shambles to disappear and leave the way clear for me to get some much nicer pictures!!!
D. S.
Exceptionally friendly service who are able to reel off the drinks menu and details without a hint of roboticism! A skill given they must have to go through this time and time again for every customer. I never knew there was an outdoor seating area which backs on to the market space. Thoroughly excellent beer selection. Would come again.
a. p.
Love this bar. Loved the lemon sherbet vodka.... hubby really enjoyed all the different beers must visit this place if in town
Ł. K.
Thanks for beer. Nice place. Climate.
E. T.
Lovely dog friendly little place! We went at around 8pm on a Saturday evening, and it was the only place in York where we didn't have to shout over music and people to have a conversation. It was lovely to sit outside on a nice warm evening with a few drinks, and the dog felt comfortable enough to have a little nap! We will definitely be back!
D. G.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff loved the drinks and music
D.
Lovely little pub, we entered market side and sat outside as weather was great. Very small inside but it's a old building so didn't expect anything else. Toilet is unisex as only 1 Toilet but on ground floor and clean.
A. D.
Great place to visit
C. S.
Very enjoyable meal. Good beer all at reasonable prices. The reason I took a star off was due to the fact there was a drunken customer at the next table who verbally admitted he was drunk. There was visible concern demonstrated by a number of patrons. Especially when he stood up and started chanting 'England' and waving his arms around In my opinion he should have been quietly asked to leave.
B. P.
The dark beer of this Pub is the best one in York, I highly recommend it for all the lovers of Guinnes to try this amazing option, it will not disappoint you.
H. a. D. B.
Cracking little pub on the edge of the market area. A massive range of bottles and cans, plus at least four ales on tap. A decent choice of unique pub foods. Great staff.
Outside area with heating.
J. M.
Lovely quaint pub with nice outside space
B. F.
Reasonable place, good beers etc. Menu adequate, great staff.
Too packed in for me though, I went in but wouldn't go back to be honest.
I enjoyed the food and my lager shandy, but just to clostrophobic plus seating wasn't to comfy.
J. R.
Best in the evening. Cosy and unique pub with friendly staff and locals.
A. V.
Lovely food. Excellent service.
J. K.
Good quality Tavern with excellent staff. The beer is good but a bit hoppy for me but consistent with the York taste for very bitter bitters. Only other slight disappointment was their closing at 7pm on the Sunday night we visited. At the same time understandable under pandemic conditions although we had previously been told to expect a 9pm closing time.
K. T.
Lovely and relaxed. Good drink selection. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
m. b.
First post lock down beer. The barman was great. The Tavern served a great choice of real ales and salty snacks. The covered seating area was well sheltered and with views across the market place, what's not to love
M. F.
Sit outside under a heater and observe market life. Inside is cozy and quaint. Good range of beers and substantial meals cost £1.50. The venue is rich with Shambles atmosphere, staff are polite, attentive and cheerful. Do visit, sup a pint of their own brew, fill up on burger and chips and regroup for more shopping.
D.
Not much outdoor space but this hidden gem of a pub is great. The outdoor seating was covered from the wind and rain with a few heat lamps.
Staff were friendly and drinks were reasonably priced and a nice selection too.
J. c.
Great little pub and frendly staff, loos like a shop at front but back is a bar and you can get in from the market side.
Didn't try food but looked nice, just watch the step between bar and seating bit.
R. T.
So many interesting little shops, and all close together. Very easy to navigate round and spend an hour or two.
D. H.
Been here a few times now. And every time Is a pleasant experience. Lovely staff. Classic old world atmosphere. With ever changing selection of drinks and situated in the most scenic place in York.
D. B.
Lovely service, lovely food and great drinks, what more do you need. Homemade hot sauce is banging!! Little gem of a place and a great spot for just sitting and having a bit of a people watch.
S. D.
Lots of beer choice, nice atmosphere and people.
M. C.
Great guys. Interesting local beers and gin. Lovely friendly service from Luke and Scott. We will be back back before our holiday ends. See you tomorrow 😁
J. S.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and York's little hidden gem 👍🙂
T. c. 1.
Lovely friendly and welcoming place. Beautiful Ales and Gins with lots of flavours to choose from . . I'd highly recommend the Toffee Gin! Worth a visit!
P. F.
The best thing about covid is that pubs are not as noisy and very comfortable to stop in. That is if you can get a seat and table. I do like table service, I hope it continues after COVID. The staff were very polite and very pleasant a credit to the establishment
W.
No matter the weather, the outside area is really nice to sit at. Heated and covered, and looks over the market so nice for watching the world go by.
The front also acts as a shop, with a huge selection of bottled beers to buy.
M. M.
Great pub. Very friendly!
S. C.
Good atmosphere and range of drinks. Please be aware this place is quite small so seems packed and only one loo. Nice outdoor space at the back. Not tried the food here.
P. S.
First time been here. Will be going back

A really nice place with nice food, the staff were really welcoming and friendly, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here
S. F.
We have been to this bar before and really loved it, now they have more room at the back by the market with heaters it is so much better as you get a chance to have a seat. Highly recommend this place, the staff are also very very friendly.
L. D.
Loads of beers to choose from. Cute little place and staff are really helpful and chatty
T. R.
Just popped in for a drink. Shopping is such hard work!
Nice, clean tidy place. Food looked good.
But..... at first it doesnt look like it serves food as there is no mention of it on the boards outside. Wasnt till we went in that we realised it did.
D. T.
Great food and genourous portions, friendly staff, they have some unusual ciders 🙂 and they are also dog friendly.
N. G.
Great staff and great beer in this little bottle shop and bar... Just sup and watch the world shamble by.....
J. C.
Flight of beers to taste their range, 5* staff and location. Get this location on your tour of York!
M. E.
Last time we were here social distancing was in place, glad to say that inside the tables are still well placed and get cleaned regularly. Staff knowledgeable and friendly
p. b.

W. M.
Brilliant place absolutely love the selection trays of ales or gins.
R. B.
Lovely pub. Lovely market. Lovely staff. Lovely day out. Warm heaters outside. Great place to watch the world go by. Definitely recommend. Bit pricey though.
r. h. (.
One of the best places to visit in York for the market shops pubs restaurants it can get extremely busy . some of the street are narrow . Parking is expensive now but we use the park and ride with oap cards £2:40 to use this facility much easier and drops you of and pick you up at the shambles
C. R.
It is quite a nice place, the decoration is amazing and the building is really from many years ago. 4 stars is because they closed the kitchen service early (9, and the bar goes til midnight) and they did not let us know. By the time we ordered some food, kitchen was already closed.
K. E.
A cosy little place with a great selection of food and ale. I myself had the 10oz rump steak which arrived freshly cooked to perfection. Expect a wait for food, as it is all clearly freshly cooked to order. The Taster ale platter is a brilliant idea and still good value for money. All in all a wonderful visit.
K. K.
Just love this place, cute very small bar ,full of character .
T. M.
Characterful pub with a warm ambience set between the Shambles and Shambles Market. Good food and a great range of beers.

R. L.
Great quaint little pub on the market next to the Shambles. Outside covered eating area overlooking market. Indoor eating and a lovely separate little bar looking out to the Shambles.
Real ale and cider and gin varieties. Friendly helpful staff. Great for people watching.
K. C.
A great place for food and an excellent choice of beers. Would highly recommend...
D. M.
This is where the locals go for a drink, the beer is awesome, its dog friendly and the staff always have a smile on their faces. Seriously, dont take my word for it just go and have some fun.
M. S.
Great choice of beers and nice burgers too. Staff very friendly.
J. M.
Had my first look in here today and have to say I'm very impressed. I've walked by a few times and always thought it looked very tiny, but didn't realise there is more space out back and even some outside, covered seating in the marketplace behind the tavern. The staff were very smiley and welcoming, and they have a massive selection of beers!
M.
Amazing historic pub with hundreds of locally brewed drinks. Great atmosphere inside and plenty of outdoor seating. Prices were insanely cheap for such a historical building with local drinks, which were very tasty. Definitely visit this pub if you're in the area
J. J.
Great pub food. Excellent beer. V good staff. Real!
P. R.
Here is my honest opinion of my visit to yesterday Ye Old Shambles Tavern York.A traditional little pub serving numerous varieties of beer and a good selection of food at competitive prices. I opted for fish and chips and my wife went for egg and chips which arrived piping hot and tasted delicious.Portions were a good size. This place is well worth a visit if travelling to York and staff made us very welcome.
A. R.
Friendly staff and good value if you want to sit outside and chat come here.
n. d.
What can I say, this place has everything! Great music, great food, great staff, great beer!

K. S.

J. S.
Nice place to tuck into for a bite and a pint. Sat in the outside covered area. Friendly staff and good beer selection. Very relaxed and we weren't in any hurry as it was raining the day we stopped in. I had the pork pie with mushy peas. Not a fan of mushy peas. Pork pie was a bit dry.
C. B.
This is a lovely old building in an historical part of York. The bar and restaurant is clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful. I enjoyed a drink outside while watching the market traders and shoppers.

We always visit here when we are in York. Sausage and mash dinner is lovely, locally sourced food. Real ale served and the smallest bar just through the other side. Can also get bottled ales to take home with you.
M. C.
Nice ale friendly barstaff
T. w.
Great little bar in one of York's famous streets. Great range of local beers. Everything from traditional bitters to the new American hoppy cans in the fridge. Plus 100s of darker, stout beers on the shelfs.

Excellent place to eat with locally sourced produce, vast array of beers from Yorkshire breweries and micro breweries in a cosy tavern and now have outside dining with smokers corner and well behaved dogs welcome 🍻🐶 love coming here and now a family favourite.
D. K.
Went for breakfast on the Sunday we were here. The food was really nice, but the wait times were a bit long. There was a couple who ordered their food and were then forgotten about as their food didnt arrive and they had to complain about it.
Unfortunately have to knock a star off for the lengthy wait
R. C.
Very friendly staff good choice of drinks good night tonight thanks to all the staff for making us very welcome

Hidden Gem
Knowledgeable staff. I would highly recommend a visit for the real ale drinkers
D. V.
Delightful choice of ales, haven't tried the food yet, but it looks very good. They offer a flight of ⅓s for £4, nice option for an afternoon spot of beer !
J. H.
Table for 5 ,,we waited 45 minutes for our meals . 2 sramblscr eggs on toast ,2 toasties and 1 chips. Toasties we're fine but the scrambled eggs were awful , very dry and didn't even taste like egg. When we went to pay the guy gave us a reduction on the scrambled eggs but he wasn't appologetic and was a bit short tempered , no appologies so definitely won't be going again
S. W.
Always enjoy a visit here. Sitting outside watching people in the market. They seem to have stopped providing throws at the outdoor seating area. Nice staff
P. W.
Only popped in for cooling drink(August bank holiday-hot ot hot hot).
Lovely quaint place...good ales/lagers.
Staff friendly. Not overpriced either.
D. S. P.

A. L.
Good selection of ales and good service and excellent place to sit and watch the world go by
K. M.
Tiny inside, nice seating area outside, service a bit slow but pleasant enough. The bar area is worth a look just for the sheer choice, they also do taster trays of beers in thirds rather than halves!
D. R.
Been open 5 years and only just found it!
Must pay attention in future
Sat under canopy outside adjacent busy stallls for a cream tea
Enjoyed it and would go again

Great selection of local ale's in a quaint pub in the shambles
S. M.
Loved it in here!!! Toilet was a bit horrid, smelt like how I imagine 1400's smelt, but I think that was the bloke in there before me. Food was great - I had a pie. And I had a pint of their own brewed beer which was superb. Lovely little blast from the past, old woodent beams.
R. S.
Amazing, Quant little streets . Full of life with plenty of variety of stalls, shops and eating places.
T. O. T.
Great place tucked into one of York's historic places .busy when the market was in when we went in . Nice staff .good drink selection
J. C.
Brilliant little pub, one of the best in York. The staff are always friendly, the beer is always good. The menu is fairly limited but it's very nice
V. H.
Had a late lunch here after visiting the market. Very small quaint room with wooden beams. There are a few outside tables facing the market. The waitresses were friendly and service was quick and attentive. Had a delicious homemade tomato and basil soup with fresh seeded bread for only £4.50. The latte was very good. An enjoyable lunch and not expensive for a pub right in the centre of York!
S. M.
A great pub and well worth your time. Historic with great beers, great staff and good food. Visit for a pint if you are in York
E. H.
The shambles is a place in york that I have grown up seeing almost every day, I never appreciated it until I found it was a tourist attraction. There's some good pubs and places to eat down there
J. H.
Very friendly bar well worth a visit
S. J.
Lovely drinks and good venue
E. L.
Get a table outside to watch people go by (and buy) in Shambles Market. Or sit inside to soak up the history of this small but perfectly formed Inn.
J. T.
It was very nice. I must admit though I am not impressed by the shambles!!!!!!!!! I have heard so much about it over the years, but it is far too touristy. Too many shops selling tacky, touristy, Harry Potter style💩 frankly .
Just not impressed at all mind you the market in behind the the Shambles is very good. The Market Tavern is very good prices also very reasonable, the only downside to it is the amount of stairs you have to climb to get to the toilets.
p. h.
Friendly staff good choice of drinks .. never ate but am sure that would have been good

I guess if you want a sense of humour you don't come to Yorkshire. The local dark ale is nice while not particularly distinctive. Seating is available inside or out back beside the market, and there are blankets on the chairs to keep you warm.

Such a great, quaint little tavern - like stepping into a Dickens novel. I've visited it in winter and in summer, and it has something to offer whatever the weather; a tiny bar area where you can chat with the friendly staff and maybe a couple of other customers (there isn't room for much more!), a larger room at the back, and a great covered outdoor space outside where you can sip and/or eat. Super-helpful and friendly staff, and an excellent range of craft beers. Highly recommended.
