stopped off just passing through the village, never been in the Downey Armes before. Had a drink and a meal with my son. 100% recommend a stop! the food is excellent good beer and friendly staff, we will definitely be popping in if we are passing again. great pub

Really excellent meal, so good we booked again. Staff were so friendly and attentive it was a real pleasure to find such a gem of a pub on our three day visit to York. I had the salt and pepper squid...lovely starter followed by steak and ale pie which was truly delicious and massive...there was so much I had to force myself to finish it...the proprietor said they specialise in quality and quantity...very true! Five 🌟

Just lovely. A great place for a family meal. Love how they are able to do smaller portions of their main menu rather than just nuggets or spaghetti, works well and a nice selection of beers and gin too!! Lovely staff, lovely pub but waited over an hour for 3 meals, finally got our food when the quiz was about to start couldn’t hear ourselves think or hear each talking. (Wouldn’t of booked if knew it was quiz night) just a shame as we use to go regularly before being taken over

17 very wet cyclists arrived for a pre booked lunch. A roaring coal fire greeted us and we took the advantage of drying our wet clothing. Food was good a promptly served. We apologise to the other guests for all the disturbance, noise and takeover of the fire. Thank you for a good lunch.

Called in tonight for dinner with partner and son, so pleased we did. It was curry night. All you can eat buffet, three types of curry, rice, chips Nan bread and popadoms. Absolutely brilliant, staff are so friendly and lovely, can’t do enough for you and the food was really really tasty. And such a reasonable price. Will definitely go again.

Lovely pub. Great food with very friendly staff. Also to note I am coeliac and the chef is very knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. Running a limited menu due to reduced staffing but with gf and vegan options and adaptions on request. Highly recommended a must try!!

Beautiful tradition pub with a great open fire. Lovely food, good range of drinks and they know how to keep a good pint. Staff are really friendly and they accommodated our large family group easily. Access from the front isn't great for wheelchair users but there's a good size car park at the back and access from the back is much better with one small step to get over. Don't be fooled by the few parking spaces at the front, there's plenty at the back. Overall I thought it was a lovely country pub and I would definitely recommend it.

We found this place by chance when travelling between York and Thirsk and stopped for Sunday Lunch, and have to say the Gluten Free selection and variety was great, enjoyed a Sunday roast complete with Gluten Free Yorkshires and Gravy (something I haven't been offered before when eating out) usually avoid Sunday roast as I find it can be very dry without gravy or any kind of sauce. So thank you. All made for a good eating out experience with the friendly staff. We came back on the Tuesday before heading back to Scotland.

Back again! Just as good as the last couple of times as well! Food is lovely and plenty of vegan options available and gluten free also. Slight issue with some soup but was happily removed from the bill. Very friendly staff and efficient service. Great selection of beers too.... i wonder if we will have a 5th visit in 2020

First visit today to the Dawnay Arms, thirteen of us for a family meal, including little ones. We all enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch and dessert, all of which were delicious, and very friendly and helpful staff. Prices were very good, all home cooked food and we will definitely be returning.

Great pub for an evening meal, a good standard menu and the specials are special! Good real ales, some brewed in the village. There are regular evening activities such as Steak Night on Tuesdays (2 x steak & wine for £21) and Quiz Nights on Wednesdays.

Took refuge in this pub to shelter from a thunderstorm .The staff were very kind and friendly offering help to dry our jackets etc. On the back of this friendly reception we decided to have what resulted in probably one of the tastiest bar meals I have had in a long time . I've been coming here with friends to the Wed evening Dawnay quiz for thirteen years which was quite soon after Pam & Garry took it over. Have also been here for meals, but surgery last year pretty well precludes such treats nowadays! Brilliant made welcome from the start plenty of choice on menu for me needing gluten free i had the Devon steak pie new potatoes and veg and gravy it was delicious my husband who chose off the main menu he had the hunters chicken he said it was best he had tasted my mum had cottage pieand veg she also was impressed how creamy the mash was and the mince was also yummy we all had a pud i had gf treacle sponge and custard this was out of this world it was so light and was heaven plus it wasn't the obligatory chocolate brownie like most restaurants pubs serve their was a good choice of gf puds my husband had a homemade banatoffee pie (not gf) he said he could of had two it was so moorish my mum had sticky toffee pudding she had ice cream with it she loved the fact of all the toffee she had again her pudding was of the normal menu we will be back again we all were very impressed
