I wanted to love this place. The website had me so excited but it was overpriced and a little underwhelming. We ordered the meat balls, ribs, and sausages which were all pretty tasty but the servings were small for the £ you pay. We ended up spending £52 on 5 drinks and 3 tapas. The bar staff definitely bring down the experience. I was hoping to learn a little bit about mead but instead I was spoken to like an idiot for not realizing the name of the mead on the menu was in fact the brand name. The barman made me feel like I was an inconvenience to him, which dampened our time here. He carried a notable dark cloud of grumpiness wherever he went. I will say, the girl who served us was pepped up and friendly. We sat inside, down stairs at lunch time on a week day. The theme of the place is cool and creates a fun unique vibe. It was however a little empty and cold. (not in temperature but in mood) Upstairs has so much more atmosphere though & it would be interesting to see if there is more buzz and character when the place is full or by the evening. If the fires places are lit, that would automatically create a more authentic experience. The music was also pop, not rock, which again, not the mood I was expecting, from the website.

This was my type of place!! Rustic and charming, lots of different drinks available, I loved the mead selection, we tried a couple of different ones and they were really tasty! Great rock music playing in the background, children are allowed in until 8pm. We didn’t try any food but saw other people eating and it looked good! Would definitely come back, worth a visit if you’re in York.

We were in York for the August heatwave. Sightseeing in the sun on the busy cocktails was brutal! I'd spotted Valhalla online before our trip and wanted to visit and glad we stumbled across it. It was cool inside and a nice break from the sunshine. Quite small inside but in a snug way with comfortable seating. Also has some tables outside. Had some quality beers. Staff very friendly.

Another great stop on our epic York pub crawl. Valhalla lived up to its name by being super cool and old school. 3 levels and an outdoor area. Plenty of drinks to choose from and a bunch of different mead's to toast to Odin's and your health. Great atmosphere. Definitely recommend if you are in York.

If you want a authentic Scandinavian experience then I suggest you seek out the tavern Valhalla! It's just liked being back in the age of the Vikings, the food here was great and the drinks were good. It has a very lively atmosphere and authentic feeling I do recommend you pay a visit!

My husband and I came for drinks yesterday after reading about Valhalla online; we were not disappointed! The selection of drinks on offer is great, the staff were really friendly and we were served very quickly. The Viking theme is very much apparent inside. We'll definitely be returning!

I'm so happy I remembered this place after a friend recommended it. The food was absolutely unreal, my partner's favourite was the meatballs in tomato sauce, by far to nicest I've ever had and the halloumi fries were the chunkiest I've ever seen. Asked if the dog could come inside as he is a larger dog, staff were more than welcoming for us all. The dog loved the fuss from the staff and the attention from our fellow customers. Drinks were great, plenty of new tastes, including mead for all potential Vikings! Food was lovely and a great accompaniment for your drinks. Rock music was exactly to my taste. So overall.... Tasty food, plenty of good drinks, great music and excellent staff. Can't wait to return next time we are in York.

Amazing tasting food, and great drink options. I had "Freya's mead" and it was delicious. Beautiful orange flavours and refreshing taste, it was perhaps a little too easy to drink! The food was perfectly cooked too and there was a great range of options. Definitely worth a visit if you're in York, it was a great addition to a viking themed day!

Gorgeous look and feel of the place. Love the interiors . What I wasnt found of was the food. It's more of finger food portions and not really in line with prices. The staff weren't exactly friendly or helpful. I asked for a BlackBerry cordial I think and the quantity of the cordial was less since it was over... so I was charged for the drink even though it was more water than actual cordial. Same with orange juice it was end of the box.

After seeing this pop up on my Facebook I had to visit for my weekend away, Absolutely love vikings so was a must do Staff was lovely, very busy But the food omg we had the large tapas plates, it was very delicious we had the meatballs, ribs, sausage and chips (The ribs where cooked perfectly but bit bland) the meatballs and sausage top notch. We visited on our last day in york it was a sunday and opens at half 11 we spent a good few hours in here I had the valhalla pale ale which was fantastic and aslo the ruby ale odins judgement which was nice . My brother tried the strawberry beer and a few of the meads which get you merry very quickly. Great merch and meads on sale to take home bar staff were very polite and let us try some of the mead before buying a glass highly recommend.

**Update 2022-June-23** Wings still delicious. This time tried the spicy meat balls and they were very delightful, spicy and flavorful. Also tried the sausage, and I was not a fan of it. Service very good still. Original post The wings!!!! Come here for the wings. We ordered a bunch of items but the best by far in ALL of England is the chicken wings. The wings were so crispy and delicious that we ordered 2 more sets immediately! We also thoroughly enjoyed the chips, they were crispy and the sea salt was amazing. The ribs were good, BUT the roasted peppers that came with the ribs were incredible! Great restaurant, will defiantly drive the 90 minutes for the wings again soon!

Fantastic Viking Inspired Rock Bar, Mead selection and human remains upon entering. Friendly and helpful staff, guy behind the bar was very knowledgeable on the Rum which made me and the gf very pleased.3 Floors of dark an comfy seating and good rock music, top floor has a 12 seated long table with a beautiful Odin mural, the room also has 2 seater side coves with windows over looking the city, a little expensive but definitely a place to check out \m/

If you're planning a trip to York an absolute must is having a few drinks and a bite to eat in Valhalla! The decor is amazing, fit for the All Father himself! We spent four nights in York and we were in Valhalla every night, we wouldn't go anywhere else now. It has a great atmosphere and rock music playing throughout, and the staff are just amazing! We spent our last night with staff members Lottie, Ned, Shaun and Chloe who all treated us like regulars and made a big fuss over my hubby's birthday (thanks so much guys!). Get yourselves to Valhalla, you can thank me later 😁

Loved visiting here, I've been twice now on seperate visits to York, the atmosphere is dark but chilled, there's viking carvings and decor everywhere. The owner was a total lovely and gave me a free mini pint glass as I found it to be the cutest thing I've ever seen, the staff are just all around lovely people. If you're lucky like i was first time you'll see a viking party upstairs where everyone is dressed up. They sell their own merch as well and the location is right off the Shambles so after a quick wander there you can go into valhalla for a drink. The only let down sadly is the toilets were bad when I visited, smelt of urine, they're shared bathrooms as there's no room for any real big toilet facilities so men and women use the same little cubicle you can lock, there was a whole tissue roll in a pool of urine and sadly that put me off wanting to go toilet there. There's not really any disability access if you have a wheel chair and you won't get to see the other two floors sadly as it's all stairs. But otherwise it's honestly a must to visit.

Definitely my favourite bar in York. The staff are friendly and have great banter. the amount of choice for alcoholic beverages is astonishing. There are hot and cold drinks options and they even do food as well. A great place to pop in for a snack and an even better place if you fancy a good sesh. As I write this review I am currently recovering from a hangover brought on by fantastic house ales this place had on offer the night before. They have both I door and outdoor seating and are opening up 2 new floors in the next couple of weeks so il definitely be back. If you visit York this is a 100% must visit place you will not be disappointed 🍻

Really enjoyed this venue. It is small and with a limited menu but it has great style and plays rock music. Not too loud to still talk. Decent beers and and I enjoyed the food platter we ordered. No bookings so walk in only and it was busy when we went so we had a short wait but once inside the service was great. Dog friendly. Pedestrian area so no parking nearby.

Fantastic authentic Viking pub. Well, there's no great hall or roaring open fire, but the beer and variety of mead on offer is excellent. Particularly recommend the Valhalla Mead. The food they serve, while not expansive is in theme as well, platters of meats and cheeses and the like. The staff and great, very friendly and helpful. The decor sets the place of brilliantly. Indoor and outdoor seating is lovely for these warm summer days and nights.

A pub that feels like it would be worthy of a Viking gathering. They have a hard-core clientele, they play Metal in the background, and the ambience definitely transports me to Jorvik times. I only wish they had a wider selection of ales, and I feel like there should be multiple flavours of mead on tap, but otherwise I will always stop here for a pint if I'm in the area, and will bring friends who haven't seen it before. Also, the staff are always friendly and accommodating to get us a table when it's busy.

Could not fault this place! We were staying in York for the week and visited a couple of times as my teenager loved the music and vibe. The food was insanely good and the staff were so lovely. If we visit York again Valhalla will be first on our list to return to!

Really good pub & loads of space upstairs too, nice atmosphere and was great to see a few properly dressed Vikings wondering in and out. Was good to see Guy Fawkes taking a break and having a drink in there too, caters for all.

Visually this place is great, definitely gives you the Viking aesthetic. It is a tad expensive though, we came in just to grab a cuppa yesterday evening. I debated getting food but when I saw the prices for tapas bitty food I decided against it. The tea was individual cups which is fine, but for the same price at other pub / bars you get a pot which is a full cup and half, whereas here you barely get 3 quarters of a cup full. I'm sure most customers are visiting for the mead and other alcoholic beverages so won't mind about this though!

Quaint bar. Nice vibe if you like hard rock and metal. Nice mead. Two staff were a couple of unfriendly wäñkers, almost left a fiver tip but decided not to. Perfect place to release your inner viking. The place is decked out like an old viking mead Hall and they sell a good variety of meads to go with that theme. If you're not in a traditional mood however they do serve a decent range of beers spirits and other drinks to satisfy your needs. Really tasty and interesting food menu too. The only thing I would say against it is its not very accessible wheelchair wise. Especially if it's busy. Inspite of this its definitely one of my favourite places to visit in york. Well worth a visit.

Served by 2 gents Friday afternoon. I enjoy my mead so made enquiries, they recommended the fruit one which was a little more pricey but 1000% worth the difference. With that and a crea soda flavoured ale, I'm going back when I'm next in York.

Beautiful pub that can also be used like a cozy cafe before rush hour, Excellent for fans of Nordmenn / Vikings and historical themes, great selection of ale and beers with other alcoholic beverages available. Great place. I always have fantastic time when visiting Valhalla. The staff are friendly, welcoming and are extremely knowledgeable about the beverages which they serve. I haven't tried the food menu as of yet but it's definitely next on my list when visiting York over the coming weeks. You can tell a lot of thought and care has gone into running this establishment. Also worth noting that Valhalla attracts a nice crowd of people too. If you haven't already been, I highly recommend you pay this spot a visit.

Great Viking styled pub, great food served as a light lunch, we had the Thor platter (sorry if that's wrong), cold meat, chicken, salad, pickles, great cheese, sourdough bread along with our drinks and rock music playing in the background. The staff were polite, prompt and well presented.

Small independent bar close to The Shambles with a Viking vibe.Furnished more like a long house then a festing hall with wooden tables and benches. Two commissioned beers plus some more well known beers are available at the bar. The Valhalla IPA was a refreshing change and definitely worth a taste. Blue Moon served with a slice of orange as it should be.Music ranged from Queen to Metallica added to experience. Were in York for a 4 day stay(07/03-10/03) and this was our goto bar,even when the weather worsened we popped in for Hot Chocolate with Bailey's served with a unique finish. Staff were friendly and approachable. Can be a quiet little haven from the hussel and bussel of the Shambles. Worth a visit.

This is a weird one. The Viking decor is great, the music probably needs to be louder for the rock and metal crowd and there's nowhere to stand. Tables are allocated which feels far too restrictive. It's got potential, but they need to run it more like a normal bar.

Love the venue, great drinks and atmosphere plus not too pricey. They also welcome dogs! Only issue we had was the menus said kitchen open until 9pm but when we went to order at 8.04pm were told the kitchen was closed, that there was a typo on the menu, and there was no way we would now get food. The barmaid who told us this spoke like we were stupid for not realising the time on the menu was wrong despite there being no other signs or anything to indicate that the kitchen actually closed at 8pm. It was a real shame as her rudeness marred what had otherwise been a really lovely visit.

It's a great themed bar, quite busy when we went but it was lateish on a friday night. There was a good selection of drinks on offer, especially mead which was one of the main reasons we chose to visit. Will definitely return at some point.

When two geeks find out they can enter Valhalla without dying, and that the liquor there is excellent, you better believe they take advantage. There were only a few others present on this quiet, rainy Tuesday evening, which was fine by us! I deliberated meads. The bartender helped by offering me two small samples. I went with my new favorite, Skaldi mead, and imbibed right out of a drinking horn. That made for some fun pictures; the only downside is that I couldn’t set it down, so had to keep drinking. Oh darn. My husband loved his Odin beer, too. I wish we'd had a chance to return here before we left York!

I thought this place was cool. I liked the Viking inspired theme and the All father's hall on the top floor. I had a pint of Valhalla dark ruby ale which was a great full bodied beer. The food was delicious and there was vegan and vegetarian dishes. All in all a pleasure to go to.

A must visit! Our first time in York and we popped in here at lunch time for a pint. We were hoping for food but they’re currently expanding upstairs so weren’t serving food which is a shame because if the quality of the beer and how well it’s kept is anything to go by, the food will be great. York has a lot of history but check out Valhalla, a small yet popular Norse/Viking bar. With rock and metal music blaring out of the windows, it certainly commands your attention and has a wonderful and welcoming atmosphere. There is limited seating inside and outside, and the current rule is that you need to have a seat before you can order from the bar, in order to control numbers. There are a range of beers but have a look at the mead, which is a delicious delight.

Lovely staff, good atmosphere, nice beer... pretty awful food. Bar staff were friendly, helpful and attentive, beer was hoppy and refreshing. On the website it paints an image of Viking style trenchers of meats, cheeses, fish and breads... but the reality was pretty disappointing. I took the cheese platter, and it turned out to be shards of a smoked, clammy processed cheese, and a couple of sad-looking slices of mozzarella. Can we not even manage a decent cheddar? The bread that came with it was two triangles of tasteless, foamy white. A cheese platter should be impressive, or it shouldn’t be on the menu at all, I’d say! I repeat that the staff, beer and interior were all nice, though :)

Fantastic theme pub. Friendly staff. Smallish venue with bench seating. Excellent choice of meads, from original pale and dark Lindisfarne Mead (both delicious, the pale slightly lighter to drink, the dark richer and slightly sweeter), also some flavoured meads, e.g. English tea mead, orange mead... They also have three draught hand pull pump beers, and some on electric taps. I had a dark Lindisfarne Mead (my partner the light), and a pint of Viking DNA (5% smoked porter), both were delicious. They also serve coffee, and bar snacks including pork pies and spiced peanuts. Very cool joint, of your into your heavy metal and vikings -which I am. They have shields along the bar, and runes carved into the roof beams. The runes are various English names written in the younger long-branch futhark. Why not five stars? Not a lot of space. Would be great to have a wood fire. Maybe some Hnefatafl sets for customers to use, kept behind the bar?

We were originally looking for a glass of chilled Chablis with a small bowl of olives but stumbling across Valhalla, we had to enter. Not the place for our refined needs of the evening, we soon changed our expectations and ordered pints of IPA and a packet of crisps. Valhalla is an honest place where you can almost smell the vikings. Infact, the guys working that evening had an air of the testosterone that could be associated with our Scandinavian ravegers. We enjoyed it for what it was and would go there again should we frequent the city of York in the future.

The bar is smaller than you might expect, but it's packed full of fun. It was my first experience drinking mead (they have a variety and it definitely has a unique flavor). The best part is drinking it out of a traditional viking horn! It does require a £10 deposit which is refunded when the horn is returned, but the authenticity is on point. Very fun atmosphere!

It's a nice little museum that has done a great job of making history accessible. The information about how the discoveries were made was excellent and the displays were well done. The role players were knowledgeable and were able to answer all the questions we could throw at them. The admission charge was reasonable if you consider the uniqueness of the artifacts.

Mead isn't for everyone, but I happen to like it quite a lot. It tastes like a dessert wine, like cognac. This was the first place I tried it, they had a huge selection and even served it in a horn on request! I was with other people and they did not request the horn and were slightly disappointed, so make sure you ask. I think its a 10£ deposit, but you get it back at the end of the night. Definitely worth it.

Funky place, set up like a Viking hall, with rock and retro music playing. Good beer selection and lots of varieties of mead to try! Other drinks available too, spirits and coffees. We were tempted in by a sign claiming 'awesome cakes' so were a bit disappointed to find only brownies and millionaires shortbread, but otherwise liked it . Dog friendly which is always a big plus 'cause we love to meet woofers :)

Always a good time here. Good platters, a variety of local beers which are good and reasonable for a city centre bar. You see lots of metal fans here, for obvious reasons - lots of viking shields and skulls! Limited seating, so bear in mind.

This is a fantastic idea for a café bar in the centre of York and it does not disappoint. They have a good selection of beers on draft including their own IPA aptly named Valhalla. The coffee is strong just how I like it and again the beans have been roasted just for them. You can even buy a bag to enjoy at home 😁 The platters are very reasonably priced and delicious too. The decor is like nothing I've seen before and you can tell there has been a lot of care and thought gone into putting it all together. So if you're looking for a good coffee or something stronger alongside great atmosphere and friendly service then this is the place to go!

Varied drink selection including craft beers, wine, gin and a range of mead (honey liqueur) - available in Viking-style drinking horns for the adventurous! A short but high-quality food menu including meat/cheese/veg sharing platters, pork pies and cake. A small bar with some communal seating - prepare to make friends on busy nights!

This place is small, but perfectly formed. I thoroughly enjoyed drinking Meade out of a horn(e), followed by Viking DNA smoked Porter. If you have to walk over what looks like a sealed archeological dig with Viking remains on the way in and the bar has solid wood tables along with shields and other Viking memorabilia, you can't go far wrong, can you?
