Reviews of Winning Post, York

So glad we found this gem of a place on our last night whilst visiting York for a few days. Amazing food and great presentation too, truly a professional kitchen. Huge portions, great value.
Gravy in the jug and these were my leftover chips which were so good.

Top notch food.
We went for Sunday lunch, and chose from the weekly menu (although the Roasts being served all looked very good).
We shared the Tempura Harrisa Cauliflower for starters which was excellent. We had Cod from the specials menu (bang on), and the Beetroot and Leek Risotto with grilled Goats Cheese for mains, and shared a Banoffee Pie for dessert.
Top quality food, great range of craft ales and spirits, friendly staff, and good value for money.
Would highly recommend as a great place for a meal out.

It’s our local but by golly the food went to another level last night! We had the turkey special which looked inviting on the chalk board but its presentation, matched by the taste, was all totally brilliant. Colour, taste and textures, they were all there. Accompanied by a nice bottle of (French) Malbec it was fantastic. Well done the chefs. I have bored a few people about it today. If you are staying in York the city pubs can be mobbed and impersonal but The Winning Post gives you that good food, a friendly touch, and also some great guest beers. What’s not to like.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon and found the pub was quiet. The barmaid was friendly and took our food and drinks order at the table. Short wait for food. I had scampi peas and lovely home cooked chips. Can thoroughly recommend what my friends had halloumi salad super delicious. The place is super clean and the toilets too. Cosy traditional atmosphere. Would return again and recommend a visit to others.

Really tasty food: crispy fish and chips and sunday special- sausage pork. Nice staff. 10 minutes walking from the crowded city center. Highly raccomanded.

In York for a week’s holiday wanted somewhere for lunch what a great find this pup was. The food was out of this world never had a pie like it was more than I could every ask for and the banoffee pie was so good would recommend this pub to anyone who in York

Just chose one of the closest places for dinner, as we were staying locally and hadn't planned anything.
Went in not expecting much and was surprised to find a very good selection of food and drink.
Not only that, the staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive.
The food portions were good and the quality was unexpected to say the least. Everyone enjoyed their food (and several drinks) in a very relaxed atmosphere and we would all recommend this place for sure.

We chose The Winning Post for a family Funeral Tea as its our local, we have lived in South Bank for generations and it holds lots of memories for us all. Their service was fantastic, right from the initial booking and ordering of buffet food to the day itself. The private function room was ideal and the food was lovely (the locally produced pork pies and sausage rolls went down a treat!) as did the selection of sandwiches and wraps, crisps, tea and coffee, chocolate brownies, scones and delicious lemon muffins! We were well attended to throughout the day and this was greatly appreciated on such a sad occasion.

Four of us had a really nice meal cooked really well cooked, big pieces of home made chicken goujon starter, the chicken burger main was a proper big piece of chicken breast fillet not something bought from a supermarket, great steak burger and proper home cooked chips. Lovely piece of raspberry and chocolate brownie for dessert. Great staff, prompt service. Only reason not 5 stars is its only a small menu choice but everything we got was lovely.

Great atmosphere and food. Nice gin selection.

Right over the road from the Diamonds guest house where we stayed. Great selection of ales n whiskeys. Nice set of comfy furniture including a chesterfield 2 seater settee and single chair. 😎

Fantastic! Lovely pub, nice staff. Great selection of drinks and it appears the menu is dandy. Can't fault it 😊

What a wonderfully done up pub, or should I say gastro pub, as the food is inexpensive and of a high quality. Plenty of room through the large separated interior means you never feel crammed in even at the busiest times.

Fantastic Inn to visit the staff were lovely the food was 5 star quality great selection of beer and everyone a good pint . If I York you would be mad not to go there

Just enjoyed a lovely meal at the Winning Post. The Thai curry with chicken was so tasty and my sorbet had the pork loin which melted in his mouth!! Very good and nice service too

Visited on Sunday with family and friends, plus one dog.
Very dog friendly and very spacious in the dining area.
Great service and we left a tip at the end.
The Sunday lunch was amazing. A huge plate of great food at a very decent price, which was extremely filling.
Would recommend the vegetarian Sunday lunch that came with a 'Mushroom + Nut Wellington'.
I highly recommend the venue and would definitely return.

Amazing chips which I'm not usually that fussed about, ale was great also. Very glad I stopped in for lunch.
I've lived in York for ten years and have never stopped by because I've always thought the building looks a bit "big screen telly ish" but inside it's actually really nice.

Amazing pub, worth every penny on the food the pub has to offer you don’t leave disappointed. Then it’s worth to mention the lovely team that is working at the pub, nothing seems too much trouble for them and they all look like they enjoy working at the pub which is of course a good sign.

4 Words to start. GRAVY BOAT AS STANDARD.
This is a 5 min walk from home, and I've overlooked it, too many times as it happens! Opting for 2 beef dinners and 1 chicken burger (between 3 of us), we sat and waited. A well stocked bar, for lager and real drinkers alike aswel as gin fans, keeps you occupied till dinner arrives.
3 good slices of perfectly cooked beef, accompanied with 2 homemade Yorkshire, turns up. Separate bowls of mixed veg (carrots, leeks, broccoli, sugar snaps, savoy cabbage), roast potatoes and a very drinkable boat of extra gravy. I can't knock any of it. Best pub roast in a long time.
The boy's chicken burger involved a chicken breast in ciabbatta, with a good portion of (possibly 2 cooked) chips. He was silent throughout, a very good sign he was happy with his choice.
The tables are plenty big enough for plates, drinks, extras and room at the sides for push/high chairs.
Now to pudding. Bakewell tart and custard for one, and lemon and lime cheesecake with cream for the other. Again, I found no reason to fault either.
All in all with 2 pints, 2 cokes and a lime and soda to drink, I walked away just short of £60 lighter. And you know what, I walked away on a full belly and content. You know what else, I will happily return, sooner rather than later.

Lovely fresh food however service was a little slow. Outdoor garden was exceptionally quiet and nice place to take dog.

Don't judge a book by its cover. This pub rates highly on both food and staff. Some of the best [pub] food I've had in York, by quite a distance. Staff constantly attentive. So although the outside looks like a mediocre chain, do call in and don't stress about the prices, it's very much worth the money.
E. O.
Great Sunday lunch which could only be improved by providing gravy in a jug rather than already on your meal.
c.
Awesome Sunday Roast and place. It's worthy to walk 15 mins out of the city to try this food.
A. T.
Welcoming staff, lovely food. Would highly recommend.

Lovely welcoming spacious pub.
Food was sadly a let down.

Popular well kept estate pub close to the racecourse. Some good real ales and friendly staff.

Stopped off here before the races 2 weeks ago and must have been our lucky pit stop

Pubs a Pub as far as I am concerned. Nothing to write home about. Had the wake for my mother in-law there. Beer was ok, but the sausage rolls were excellent.
A. W. M.
Nice food. My wife loved the fish & chips.
K. D.
Great pub just outside the heart of the centre. An absolute essential for Race Days too.
P. S.
Large size pub that can get very busy. Excellent beers with regular guest ales. Food is extremely good, especially their "homemade" pies. I found the staff pleasant and helpful and there was seating both inside and outside. Recommend that you book first if you're a group.

It was my first time stopping in York and apparently this is the number pub in the city as well; it certainly didn't disappoint. Great hearty food, good service and atmosphere. This is a picture of the pork shank (GF) dish. We really enjoy our dinner this evening and would recommend this pub to anyone who is in the area.

I attended a function there and the food was amazing. Plenty of it and very tasty.

Just been here for Sunday lunch and very nice it was too, all homemade, beef yum and lovely Yorkshire, would rather have had mash than roasties but that's personal preference! As for the warn ginger pudding there are no words apart from Fab-u-lous!
D. E.
Beer was spot on and the staff were outstanding even when super busy i didnt have any food but it looked brill i will be back for food
I. M.
Good food grub. Had the pleasure of the pies, the burgers and the chicken wrapped in prosciutto with goats cheese. All excellent food. The beer is good and had a decent variety. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The only negative I have is from a York race day when one of the other clientele were rather rude to my children, HE dropped the "F" in the WOMAN's toilets in front of my daughter. That's not the venues fault though, just a byproduct of the race day younger generation!
N. M.
Good news. Got served a pint and before I said a word the the barman noticed it wasn’t good enough (no bubbles) and the glass needed changing. First time this has happened to us in any pub in York. Well done Winning Post.

Great pub, lovely outside sitting, friendly barmaid.

Lovely big pub. Food looked good, we didn't eat. Very friendly and helpful staff.

I was a guest at a wedding organized at this club. Two young people behind the bar did an excellent job, and there are no objections to the place either.

Attended a wedding reception on Saturday evening. The bar staff working through the event were fine. The DJ was really good.
