Reviews of Ye Olde Starre Inne
D. S.
three beer gardens. great atmosphere, good prices. several types of traditional pies. you can order through the app. drinks come very quickly and the food comes also in several minutes. big portions, tasty. we even got a baby seat and it was fine with 1.5 yo baby.
L. K.
Amazing quaint pub in the heart of York! Fantastic pint of ale and a brilliant gin selection, all the team were warm and welcoming. The food menu looked really good, although we only stopped for drinks we had food envy at other guests plates!
Definitely recommend a visit when exploring York
A. H.
I've been coming to York for well over 20 years and have never been to this pub before. I'll be coming back. Really good service, great food (give the pies a go) and fabulous surroundings. The only thing I would say is that a few more chips wouldn't go amiss from a standard serving. Other than that, top notch.
L. M.
Such a lovely little find. Hidden away down a side ally.
Quick service. Friendly staff.
Great selection of food and drink!
Fish and chips were huge and lovely. Very filling
N.
Allegedly the oldest licensed pub in York. Good selection of drinks, plenty of outdoor seating and dimly lit interiors.
P. W.
You can always depend on this pub when you're in York! Perfect place to rest your feet and grab a , great, beer or wine. And super good for food even late I to a Sunday evening. Super friendly staff and what history! We didn't see any of the ghosts, but I think our dog did! And if you are a fan of the book Jonathan strange and Mr Norrell, then it is a must do stop!

Lovely food, reasonably priced. NHS discount offered on food. Great portion sizes. Peroni on draft.
The stand out factor for this place though is the staff. Sophie, Jacob and Beth made us feel so welcome.
K. N.
Nice choice of beer and very friendly and helpful staff . Food was very nice to.
B.
From our short stay in York we visited a few pubs and found that Ye Olde Starre Inne was our favourite that we visited.
A welcoming atmosphere and a traditional old style pub.
L. D.
We came here on a Sunday looking for food - we had just arrived in York and probably should have thought about booking... Ended up getting two fish and chips and two beers for £42, but what was off-putting was the lack of friendliness from the staff. The gentleman who greeted us when we came in made out like it was a massive inconvenience trying to find us a table, when there were a few free. No hello, no smile... Probably wouldn't give this place my money again based on that alone.
B. W.
I love a haunted pub and this is a really nice place to visit. The staff are friendly and as far as I've experienced so are the resident and visiting spirits. The only thing I would say is that it's a little bit tricky for wheelchair users to maneuver around inside. However the staff are very willing to help when and if they can.
A. H.
Beer range is Greene King, so not that brilliant. It was quiet and just needed a coffee. Service was polite but confused over what coffee they sold. All but one of the parties in here where drinking tea or coffee.
E. W.
The oldest licensed pub in York and manages to combine the modern and the old. It's dark inside but serves a great range of drinks and there are plenty of little nooks to hide away in. It's really a great pub and the staff are friendly and helpful the food is really good too. Definitely value for money.
A.
Really great little atmospheric pub serving quality food and nice. pint. Drinks quite expensive but probably no more than other city centre places. Lovely little court yard. Is off a main Street down an alley so easy to miss, but well worth a visit.
E. S.
Oldest pub in York. Really beautiful with 3 beer gardens and quality draft beer
R. T.
Great food, great atmosphere if you like the olde world look.
Nice outdoor seating but only a few tables.
It's well worth searching out.
Good selection of beers.
Friendly staff.
We were only visiting York for the day, and next time we do, we will visit here again.
M. W.
Such a good pub. Very quirky and historic down a tiny passage way. If you want a 17th. Century pub this is the one. Food is excellent 👌 and service fast. There are little courtyards too - to sit in when it's sunny. Suggest booking because it's quite small and one of the best and oldest in York.
G. M.
1st visit to York and was looking for somewhere for a quick bite to eat and found this little gem, off the beaten track (entrance down an alley off the street). Some "classic" pubs can be a little off putting but food, drink, service was all great. Would definitely come back!.
Ε. Σ.
Nice atmosphere, I had the Sunday roast beef which was lovely. Amazing desserts as well, try the apple crumble 😱. I only wish that the music was less "modern beats", if not medieval sounds, to set the mood, since the interior is very well preserved. 🖖
K. B.
Really old (1644). Great place, good food and lovely staff, - beer's not bad either! If it wasn't for the banner across the road you may well miss the entrance (narrow alleyway). Outdoor seating front and rear.
H. O.
The barmaid (lunch time, April 18th) was very friendly and open to talking about the ghosts, even though she must get asked a million times a day! The style was gorgeous, love an old pub! I felt the manager didn't seem to appreciate how hard the barmaid was working - she didn't stop! She's a great addition to the team
J. A.
Loved this place. A step back in time. Old world charm. Warm and friendly service. Amazing Steak & Ale pie and wide selection of drinks. Great value too 👍
S. S.
Highly recommend this place especially when I wanted Old Peculiar and it ran out.
A very historical place to read up on and visit. I absolutely love it.
One of the staff called Hetty rushed out and immediately put a new keg of my favourite real ale right on. Impressive can do attitude makes for a great public house especially as I had a mini break to York. I even went back here on my last day to thank all the staff in person!
D.
I had a few drinks here and the environment although dated (and rightly so at the oldest in York!) keeps a charm. Its warm and cosy but not too loud and seems well maintained in most areas. Great selection of drinks and a good selection of food too. Unfortunately I went for a simple option, the burger.. It was a bit too greasy for me which ruined the texture of the buns and as the grease dripped into the plate it unfortunately had the same effect in the bottom bun making it fall apart. Fries were good, but to be expected, they are just fries. It's a shame as the ingredients certainly had a fresh texture and taste.. Let down I think by rushing the burger itself.
D. R.
Strongly recommended!!! A beautiful pub in the lanes of Yorks. Beer garden, delicious food, friendly staff and the warm / retro vibe. A wide selection of beers/ ales/ alcohol at reasonable price but the highlight was the food. Please visit and enjoy!!
M. B.
Delicous steak and ale pies woth lovely mash and tasty vegetables! The perfect end for a lovely day around the city center. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for an old-style english pub in the city center!
G. F.
Busy city centre pub that retains its charm and history, a pilgrimage for fans of the novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell with features on the wall relating to the book. Also good fast pub food and friendly northern service. Plus being a Greene King you're always guaranteed a decent beer.
A. B.
Oldest pub in the UK! Very traditional wood panelled pub in the centre of York. Serves a variety of cask ales and a good selection of pub meals. Lovely courtyard entrance where you can sit out and eat on warmer nights.
n. s.
A Really nice old and dark cosy pub with lots of rooms.hard to believe how big and nice it is when all you see is a sign leading to it hidden away up and alley way. Will definitely be one for my list whenever I visit York. My most favourite place in the country!
L. H.
Great lunch with friends on Bank Holiday. Staff very helpful at extremely busy time with a limited menu. Scotch egg starter was delicious.
E. B.
Beautiful old pub, lovely Roman ruins in the cellar that was found
J. G.
Lovely pub tucked away in lane off Stonegate in historic York. Be sure to visit to see a real British pub which serves real ales and good quality food. The interior is a delight.
P. R.
Excellent Fair As Ever, Very Welcoming Bar Staff, Good Range Of Hot Food To Suit Most Tastes. Some Vegan Options Are Also Available And For York, The Prices Are Pretty Much What You Would Expect To Pay In Most Establishments. This Being York's Oldest Licenced Inn 1644 Makes It For Me THE Place To Eat Whenever I'm In York ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10 Borderline Eleven 😎 Photos © Paul (Pòl) Ruddock Photography 2022.
C. N.
Great food and good selection of beers . Felt very comfortable as soon as we entered the premises . The staff were excellent and service was just as good . I would strongly recommend this place for food , drink and level of service .
V. K.
Lovely proper food, friendly service, felt safe, plenty tables, space and doors open. Great wine. Couldn't have asked for more.
d. r.
A very nice pub with good beers and food hidden away but easy to find very close to the York minster, it is quite old school inside and has a large outside space for the good days. Though not tried the food as yet the beers a very nice, we will be back when we visit York again
D. M.
Lovely pub, excellent staff. Only problem was they forgot to put the bacon on my burger. As they were so busy I didn’t want to say owt.
D. B.
Great old pub with a decent atmosphere and really good selection of Ale. Outdoor seating for the nice weather and the food is good quality (try the pies).
C. O.
Lovely atmosphere, bar staff lovely. Club Tropicana ale was tasty as was southern comfort. Would go back again.
K. S.
What a wonderful pub to visit, a oldie world pub, with 3 beer gardens and fantastic food. They have 8 different beers for you too try. When in York you must visit.
S. K.
Lovely old worlde pub, the oldest in York apparently. The food was good, as was the atmosphere. I would recommend a visit if you're in York
S. D.
Obviously popular pub, very busy, generous portions food wise. Building a bit tired but enjoyed our time there.
D. H.
Fantastic pub of many rooms good beer . Didn't like the the introduction of rave type music at around 6 pm meant older customers would move on
A. S.
Brilliant old style pub. Food, drinks and service were all excellent
K. W.
Lovely old pub, friendly staff. Quite pricey (as you expect in this hub of tourism) well worth a visit.
J.
Order your Plymouth gin from a bartender from Plymouth! Can't do that back home. Food was solid enough. Atmosphere is 5 star.
c. R.
Real pub old style, beautiful view of the minster.
J. P. G.
Good selection of beers, friendly staff and good food selection. Added bonus of a great view of the minster from the beer garden.
G. S.
Excellent food, friendly staff, lovely location and beautiful weather, what more can you ask for. Just love visiting places off the beaten path.
K. L.
Lovely pub ,lovely staff good music and such a laugh we was a group.off 11 would recommend it
M. S.
Had a work event here last night and the team were amazing - had reserved a space and were friendly and service was fast. Would recommend
P. B.
Both kid and dog friendly. Really nice food. A very enjoyable family meal.
A. R.
Lovely old rustic Inn. Food was great best nachos ever tasted. Highly recommended
C. C.
It’s was okay, standard Greene King pub. Possibly short staffed due to COVID. But also staff felt like they couldn’t be bothered to be here. Busy due to location & because of being the oldest inn in York.
J. A.
Great pub but was just charged £1.65 for the dash of lime in my vodka soda lime. Queried but staff confirmed. Disappointing.
Update: Thank you for rectifying this for me.
A.
Probably Yorks oldest licensed pub 1645. Love very old pub that was a hospital in the civil war. Has an outside seating area if you walk through the pub or you can sit out the front of the pub. If you are looking for this pub look up when you are walking on Stonegate & you will see big sign that says YE OLDE STARRE INNE then you would walk down the alley.
L. R.
Although very busy.. Good pub! All you holders of a blue light card you can get discount!!! Bonus!!!!
D. R.
Expensive drinks but place is cosy and clean. Staff friendly and a nice beer garden.
K. H.
Had a lovely drink here. The food looked nice but didn't eat here. Prices were fairly reasonable
P. H.
As it says on the tin and absolutely brilliant. Proper bar with food and real ale, TV and music. It gets a bit busy but the staff offer quick and efficient service so no queue, which is a bonus. Lovely beer garden
K. R.
We had a lovely lunch. Lovely service and food was really nice.
J. N.
I always visit the Starre when I come to York. Has a lovely feel to it and for some reason I'm fascinated by an old building I can see from the beer garden/courtyard. Behold!
M. C.
Great little pub. Really enjoyed the atmosphere
B. A.
Beautiful pub. Good beer, nice atmosphere. Shame about portion sizes though
M. S.
A great little find for afternoon drinks (didn't try the food), sat in one of the beer courtyards under the minster.
S. B.
Really enjoyed the oldest licensed Inn in York! Food was delicious and the inside of the pub was fantastic - three different beer gardens too! Definitely a 'must visit' when in York
R. Y.
Good food. One of are party had a birthday and the waiter went the extra mile to get us a cake and candles. Also dog friendly. Highly recommended.
S. H.
Always love this pub. Today the staff went above and beyond. My friend had a seizure which was very scary. The staff cleared the courtyard of customers, called the ambulance, provided pillows for my friend and were absolutely amazing. Thank you so much. You all deserve a massive bonus.
R. S.
Quirky old place, with a great atmosphere.
Good beer, and surprisingly good food for a pub chain..
Great staff too.. recommended
A. W.
Ordered food at lunchtime and got served fairly quickly. Food was good and staff friendly. A nice atmosphere all round.
D. R.
Nice atmosphere Good real ales are available, plus many other drinks, they also do food but not tried any as yet maybe next time we are in York.
S. W.
It's a long time since I was in the town with the lads in the Starr but I always found it a great place, very busy and popular very good beer. Always on our pub circuit.
M. S.
Traditional style pub in York - popped in for something to eat midweek but kitchen had closed already (it seemed quite early circa 8pm.) Team we’re friendly and explained straight away. We didn’t stay long.
j. m.
Although we were very late for kitchen, we were given the menus and tha food and service was excellent, it is a very old pub, very dark and it sadly smells it's age, despite the aroma it was very friendly and couldn't fault the food.
R. C.
Staff are lovely & very helpful. Food was good. Was sat next to the door to the toilet and was a bit annoying everytime someone came through as we had to move. Door there is a bit awkward.
D. C.
Very busy venue ate on both nights of our stay great food and service, Staff were keen to please. Nice little suntrap at the back of the Starre
D. B.
Great staff, lovely welcoming "proper pub" slap bang in the centre of town without being too full, and excellent food, can't rate it highly enough
J. H.
Staff friendly, food gorgeous and excellent location
L. M.
Ye olde worldy in name and vibe. Excellent range of beers on draught and classic good pub lunch. Such a great place tucked away in the Heart of York.
J. W.
Went for a meal here yesterday, the pies were great and the plant based burger too. Good atmosphere.
B. G.
We go to York markets every year and this year we booked our Christmas Dinner at the Ye Olde Starre Inn. Service and food were fantastic. We were looked after from the moment we entered until we left. Fantastic vegan Christmas option too..
N. B.
Great pub, choice of eating outside or in. Food very nice sharing starter nachos to die for. Excellent homemade pie .. very reasonable
P. H.
Oldest pub in whitby with good atmosphere, nice beer garden. Food is available too which is also really nice.
C. S.
Very nice. Lasagne was a little dry and meatless. Staff were attentive and polite. Dog friendly
P. C.

It’s a warren of olde world charm
We visited twice over the long weekend
Definitely A visit
Try the fish finger sandwich and you won’t go far wrong !
A. R.
We ordered the fried chicken burger and Lamb hot pot. Must say the lamb hot pot was amazing. Great hospitality👍
L. B.
Lovely friendly atmosphere food lovely, prices reasonable overall a good experience.
M. M.
Visited many times in the past and more recently. Never fails to fascinate. Great choice of beers, food was excellent, coupled with great service, a must visit 👌🏻
F. G.
Nice old pub. The veg burger and the mushroom pie were OK. The burger was nicely flavored and had an earthy sort of taste. The pie was very hot and tasty without being too flavorful. One star less because table not being cleaned until we had to ask for it to be cleaned twice. And the pub was not busy.
C. H.
Great pub. Come here every time we visit York. 3 beer gardens all spoilt by the over loud music playing and interfering with conversation.
M. F.
Were enticed in by the oldest licenced pub in York sign. Lovely traditional pub in the centre of town. Friendly staff, great beers and a welcoming atmosphere. Drinks were great. Food was OK, not the best we had over the weekend but good enough. Will definitely come back here in the summer.
C. A.
Great ale. Lovely historic bar with really nice staff
D. H.
Very charming old-style pub with plenty of hidden-away areas to choose from, whether sitting down for a meal or just a drink. Food and drinks menu is typical of similar Greene King pubs, albeit a bit pricey. Beautiful location and a sprawling floorplan, a must visit if you're in York!
T. P.
First time here lovely place real olde world. Real ale paradise . It's a lot bigger than it looks. Everyone friendly. All positives . 👍🥳
J. M.
Nice pub, cask beer, bar snacks etc
A. R.
Super menu. Very good place
G. D.
I love this pub. Good food and great beer, what's not to like. Staff are friendly and you can feel the history oozing from the place.
L. N.
Great historic pub. Dark and mysterious. Food was great. Staff friendly.
J. C.
If you want to see a quintessential English pub, come here. An amazing range of ale on tap and the whole place is just the picture book British pub. Service is exceptional and prices are really reasonable too. I know there are 365 pubs in York but they'd have a tough time beating this one!
s. s.
Great little place and the food is amazing, the best bbq burger I have ever had
k. r.
Lovely old pub. Plenty of space. Staff friendly enough. Prices average for york . Also loads of outdoor seating which id imagine will be nice in the summer.
E. N.
Very cosy old school pub with loads of cosy rooms. Scampi was great! Didn't rate five stars because we were asked if our food was OK (it was) 3 times from separate members of staff. Bit annoying when we're trying to eat!
M. P.
Fantastic meal with the family always a great place to visit when we eat out at York.
B. R.
Great pub, friendly staff, live entertainment and good value for money pub grub
N. T.
What a beautiful find, strolling around York we was looking for a dog friendly pub and restaurant! This is one of the oldest pubs in the UK, and the food and drink were lovely! We had the loaded nachos and fish fingers sandwich... was lovely! Quick service and easy to order. Thank you.
K. K.
Nice wee find and good selection of beers and other spirits
F. B.
Good selection of craft beers, unusual location accessed via small alleyway, bit of a TARDIS inside as it opens out into garden spaces as well. Well worth a visit if you can find the entrance!
B.
This is a very friendly pub full of atmosphere. They have buy one get one free on cocktails from 4 - 6. Good food too.
J. R.
A beautiful old pub with great service and Amazing food. Hidden away by small passage. But well worth a visit.
M. W.
Loved it here, always do. Despite it being really busy all the staff were bang on their game, smiling, helping, nothing too much trouble. Then we had food. Utterly brilliant. Ordered on the app and the cutlery and condiments came immediately with piping hot food to follow in under 20 minutes.
It really is a good place this and with so much competition, one worth supporting.
Thanks to all, management and staff.
B. C.
Excellent old pub in centre of York. Very old interior with multiple rooms. Great beer choice.
A. G.
Friendly. Great food and sensibly priced. We always eat here when in York. Hearty meals.
S. “. D. D.
Good choice of cocktails & ales......job done!!! Great atmosphere.
P. H.
A very old off the Shambles hostelry, good atmosphere, well served hand pulled ales including the best served pint of Theakeston's Old Peculier I have drunk for a long time. Good food well served on a busy Saturday lunch time. Highly recommended.
R. S.
Ye Olde Starre Inne is a fine example of a very old and quaint English pub.
The staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful. The pub itself is warm, comfortable and cosy. Myself and my fiancée visited after spending the afternoon at the Christmas Market. We were only intending to stay for one drink but ended-up having dinner too, swayed by watching other customers food being served to them! The food was lovely, the choice of beer and wine excellent! We visited for a drink at lunchtime the following day, then we returned early evening so that we could have dinner again, which was excellent once again. If you're visiting York, we would definitely recommend Ye Olde Starre Inne.
D. H.
Typical old world pub, food looked good, nice atmosphere.
A. R.
Great atmosphere, great ale, good prices, lovely place all round
D. F.
Been going in here when I visit York since 1989 and it's a magical pub. Love the cozy feel, the little side rooms and corridors.
Blink and you might miss the entrance on Stonegate.
Superb beers and a good standard of service.
M. W.
Lovely range of vegan food (would recommend the vegan fish and chips!) and a great atmosphere. Very pleasant evening there last night sampling a few whiskies too.
W. “. S.
Really enjoyed our evening here. The atmosphere of the pub is awesome, I love the old historic style. Our food was really good as well, but best of all was the service. Our waitress was called Megan, and she was absolutely brilliant. So friendly and funny and made us feel really welcome, she could not have been better!
D. N.
Every time I visit this gem I realise just what I missing! Fantastic atmosphere, great beers and excellent service. We didn't eat this visit but the menu is good and varied. Very dog friendly too.
D. R.
Only stopped for one drink but very good vibes with a nice chilled atmosphere. Plenty of TVs so imagine it'd be great for sport. Friendly staff too
R. H.
I ordered the chicken burger with guacamole with fries and coleslaw. Really just ok. Picture says it all. It was about as tasty as it looked and portion was very small. Asked if that was all the coleslaw it came with and was kindly brought some extra. The guacamole was a thin spread on the bun. Couldn't find the chilli sauce. Edible when very hungry but definitely not anything to rave about.
S. H.
Apparently the oldest pub in York. It's ok, not the best and doesn't look particularly old inside. A bit rowdy, but not too bad.
A. T.
The start of the haunted pub crawl, the gin was really good, nice selection as well, it was really busy and we didn't stay long, but sat outside on a lovely day and had no complaints about that. Will be happy to revisit on our next trip
R. A.
A good traditional pub with a wide selection of real ale. Always busy with a nice feel about it. Never the warmest pub in winter, but what would you expect in a building that is so old!!
S. H.
Perfect place in middle of York
Lovely food
Wonderful staff
N. R.
Friendly atmosphere, plenty of space in the beer gardens 😎
A. B.
A great old school boozer with a tasty selection of 5 different sambucca shots! There's some good pub grub to be enjoyed and plenty of seats to gather round for games of I have never and 20+1!
K. S.
Food is standard really, the server was very friendly. Good value.
R. S.
Great pub, great staff, fab food and a good laugh and the best is.... they offer discount to emergency service staff..... 5 stars and more.
J. A.
Food was lovely, very well cooked and filling too. Everything was a good price. The staff are lovely and friendly here and more than willing to chat with you about the stories and history of the building. Would recommend to anyone to have a visit. Would come back
A. D.
Great pub with great beer and great service.
This pub was my wife's regular Thursday night out 30+ years ago with her friend.
We went past on an evening after York races with the view of just having a look to show my son as we expected it to be packed and there be nowhere to sit.
It was almost empty so we went in. Apparently it's hardly changed in 30 years (apart from the prices!).
Great proper pub which we will be back to on our next visit. Hopefully before another 30 years though.
N. B.
Good pub with an excellent selection of beers served by excellent staff. Had Sunday roast dinners and they were fine.
S.
Nice beer selection and great ambiance. Baked Brie was average but well priced.

Really good atmosphere in York's oldest pub. The Steak and Ale pie was superb. Had a really lovely lunch and wouldn't hesitate to visit again. Very friendly staff, highly recommended.
e. j.
Lovely old world pub Friendley staff Enjoyed lovely pint Carlin xxx
P. G.
Lovely old pub with an olde world interior. Staff are very helpful and there is a good selection of ales. My only criticism is there is music playing which spoils the atmosphere.
L. D. C.
Olde world pub. Well kept, clean and welcoming.
Staff were friendly and quite attentive
Food was very good and home made
L. B.
Great pub, friendly staff, good food and beer.
S. G.
Pub was fine but a bit expensive. Could do with updating the heating from a wee blow heater to something a bit better
D. B.
Proper old school pub with a great atmosphere. Great ales and excellent service, what isn't to like. Absolutely love this place.
A. S.
Interesting pub and well worth a visit
J.
Great food and beer selection food very nice 😋☺️,

Lovely old pub, staff friendly and helpful.
K. M.
Fantastic pub. Dog friendly. Loved it.

a. c.
Friendly staff, great food and prompt service
D. A.
Beautiful old pub, good friendly service.
J. D.
Had a lovely meal here, a good steak and kidney pie with rich gravy. Ordered with app but could go to the bar if needed. Quite quiet but enjoyable.
W. D.
Nice tucked away pub with history. Lovely pints and mulled wine. Didn't have food but from what I saw. Brought out great portions and empty plates returned
L. T.
Great selection of gins and a lovely atmosphere.
m. h.
Very quaint old pub. Friendly polite staff. Nice food. Pub clean and all covid rules in place. Tables floors and toilets very clean. Reasonable prices considering the fact that the area is a big tourist trap.
P. J.
Great historic pub, good variety of beers on tap
J. W.
As a tourist I wanted to experience a drink in the oldest pub in York. Its a chain place, so standard experience really. Outside space felt old tatty and a bit dirty. Asked for a certain rum, they didn't have and my partner asked for a lager on tap only to be told its run out.
S. g.
Great atmosphere lots of nooks and cranny for seating to rest our tired feet
D. P.
Wonderful traditional pub with excellent beer.
J. M.
A good pub in the middle of York. Good value!
C. T.
A lot of safety precautions in place so we felt well looked after. Very friendly service and pleasant staff.
R. “.
They nice staff and the atmosphere is amazing in this very cozy pub
E. K.
They have some delicious dark ales, not so bitter. It's really old. They play newish music. Nice pub.
A. F.
Really efficient and friendly staff. Good food too
D. D.
Just went for drinks. A fab busy pub
R. W.
Lovely old pub. We only had coffee but good selection of drinks available. Definitely call back again
K. J.
For many years I was refused access to Ye Olde Starre on the grounds of being part of a group. A group of mainly rowdy teenagers.
So today, verging on being an OAP I make it a point to call in whenever I am in York.
D. C.
Ok food and great building with some nice staff
S. F.
Great pub, a bit on the expensive side though. £3.80 for a red bull on its own!!!!!
S. w.
1st time, loved it, very quaint and lots of little areas to sit in
J. C.
What an old fashioned boozer should be, great service and warm reception, thanks
S. M.
Good old traditional pub. The food I had was good with anice choice of drinks. Very busy and really friendly staff.
J. B.
Very good looking pub. Unfortunately the seats didn't seem arranged well for social distancing. We were seated directly next to a path in the one way system. I will come again as the atmosphere was great and the staff were very good but hopefully that seat doesn't exist next time.
M. M.
Lovely old pub atmosphere. Very friendly staff. Food was amazing best fish finger sandwich 😁 will definitely go back on my next visit to York.
P. C.
Good pub good ambience and real ale.
C. S.
Great pub good selection of beverages
s. 9.
Polite friendly staff ,lovely in the garden with the minister overlooking .5starplus
P. A.
Enjoyable food pleasant environment helpful staff.
T. K. B.
It's a busy pub. So, wait time for food may be longer. Food is good though. Standard Green King menu, nothing special or surprising.
D. G.
Really nice old pub with all the character and history you want in York. A good selection of cask ales and friendly, helpful staff means we will return.
D. D.
Great food, great beer. Comfy surrounds in an atmospheric, historical pub. So good we went twice in 2 days.
C. C.
Beautiful pub, full of character and charm. Incredibly knowledgeable staff, particularly Harvey who was amazing.
P. C.
Excellent food, drink and ambiance. We really enjoyed our lunch and the pub felt covid safe. Recommended
H. D.
Really like this place, very cosy and festive at Christmas time. Great little secret beer garden too with heaters. Good wine!
g. v.
Lovely location great food beer and service.
L. E.
Nice place, good atmosphere in the side rooms although blaring music elsewhere isn't amazing.
Staff are friendly although they don't know their beer! Asked for a stout and was told they don't serve any, went to the bar and saw two on tap.
A bit expensive, around £4.50 a pint.
Overall good, but not perfect, hence 4 stars.
J. C.
Cracking food especially the sausage rolls starter and great beer 🍺
D. F.
You need to have at least one drink in this old classic. Very popular and very full. Nice selection of beer
G. W.
Always have a lovely time, staff are so nice .
C. M.
Great pub and little beer garden
R. C.
Amazing pub with friendly staff
J. J.
We've been in York since Friday for joint birthdays and our Anniversary. We've been all over your city, getting up to Shenanigans. It's no surprise to me that the BEST service and the nicest food has been in Greene King establishments.
We OBVIOUSLY had a Sunday roast today and the lamb was flipping (would use stronger language, but y'know) BANGING! Absolutely flipping sublime, so 'Big Ups' to your chefs.
The rest of your team are also top notch geezers and geezerettes, and a credit to you. The place is also spotlessly clean throughout.
As an aside, the cask ales are beautifully kept and there looks to be something to appeal to every taste drinks wise. Hopefully we'll have time to pop back in before we head back to Blackpool tomorrow. Fanx
k. w.
Fantastic,so friendly staff and brilliant customers made me my wife granddaughter and chocolat lab so welcome
M. T.
Surprisingly a Greene King pub that's pleasant. Lovely old features in a historic building.
C. A.
Good traditional comfort food, reasonable price, interesting old building.
B. A.
Had a great Sunday roast here. Frankly the roast was average but it was well priced and has all the necessary trimmings. Pub was nice inside but fairly empty on a Sunday afternoon. Drinks were cheap compared to London! Worth a look given the historical aspects of the hotel.
o.
Food was ok, beer a bit lacking. It's part of a chain so there you are. Nice and olde worlde in some parts of the pub.
S. M.
Lovely welcoming place. Reasonable prices. Fab staff.😁😁😁
C. H.
We poppers in here in the off chance of some food whilst wondering through York.
You know you're in a real coaching inn when sat inside.
The tourist trade keeps this pub alive with good food and quick service.
S. P.
We had an awesome table in this Pub with their very accommodating stuff (Abbe and Daniel)
The recommendation of Abbot ale is perfect specially it’s my first time trying cask ales.
Almost perfect if only my wife’s tenderloin steak cooked better.
T. B.
Staff still on top of cleaning the tables due to Covid where a lot of places seem to be slacking in this area these days, so top marks for that 👍
Not as "olde" as you'd expect to find inside being the oldest pub but a nice pub all the same.
G. B.
A hidden bar in the narrow streets of York. Lovely cosy place to have a brew. I would recommend the garden, as long as the weather is up for it. The food in this place is also really nice. Taking a little longer than usual because of Covid, but that's understandable.
d. v.
Great historic pub, lovely beer garden at the back with big TV. Views of york minster from the beer garden. Good selection of beers and great atmosphere...definitely recommend
L. H.
Always a great place for a drink, friendly atmosphere and great selection of drinks
C. V.
I made a visit to Ye Olde Starre in on a Sunday afternoon for a few drinks and it was a nice experience. Dogs are welcome inside and the staff are very friendly and good at advising on drinks. All the drinks came in good time and we were a good distance away from anyone else around us. The greeter on the door was friendly and got us in quickly.
D. M.
Fantastic pub, would be wrong to visit York and not have a pint here.
M. R.
Lot's of outside seating, fantastic location.
G. H.
Nice to visit the oldest pub but it was a little disappointing inside.
C. B.
Lovely pub with a fab atmosphere
J. W.
Another decent pub in York 😁
S. L.
Brilliant pub good food and down a alleyway that makes it York’s best kept secret! clean and staff got a sense of humour five stars from me
E. M.
Brilliant I can't say how great it was to have a cold beer in the beer garden after all this time
C. W.
Nice place, one to tick off as the oldest pub in York.
K. H.
Good selection of real ales, a very nice pub.
S. P.
Great pub located in the heart of York. Good food that is well priced! While the sign is visible from the street the pub itself is located down a short alleyway. Which is just far enough to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a pint and/or some food.
S. B.
An amazing find down the festive streets if york. A proper traditional pub with a good variety of drinks and delicious food!
A. M.
Called in off the cuff, not a problem and we were seated and served very quickly. Friendly, attentive and competent staff, a real pleasure. Had the gammon and the burger. Both were delicious and reasonably priced.
M. W.
Great City Beer Garden on a red hot summers day
m. j.
Nice place plenty of outside space. CAMRA 10% discount. Although prices not visible so not sure what discount given. Soft drink cost!
K. L.
Lovely beer. Busy venue with graduations underway in York. A must visit historical Inn with friendly staff
S. B.
Lovely pub hidden away off the main street. Really cosy and lovely staff.
F. A.
Food was excellent. Service quick and staff very friendly. Worth a visit if in York. Beer good too.
L. A.
Lovely Olde worlde pub, great cosy atmosphere with excellent service and good quality real ales.
C. H.
It genuinely is a great place, it has low ceilings but that isn't a complaint as its an old building and I'm 6 foot 5. Great drink spread and great staff, would recommend 9/10
A. G.
Charming old coach house with views of the Cathedral. Wide variety of drinks to chose from. Table service was courteous and prompt. Didn't eat there but spied people's food from across the courtyard and it did look tasty
P. T.
Very good old fashion pub food looks good nice size pies for Yorkshire as in a lancastrin but serious now I'll be eating there before I go back over the boarder
A. V.
Food came really fast, and the portions were great.
U. B.
Allegedly York's oldest licensed drinking establishment.
Busy with friendly staff who make you welcome.
Nice food well presented with a fair selection of drinks available.
H. S.
This is a really lovely pub. It's kind of hidden away a bit but it's worth finding. It's got a lot of history too. They have a really nice menu with reasonable prices and great portion sizes. It has a really cosy environment and is a great place to get Sunday lunch or just go for a drink. The staff are really friendly too and they have a great selection of beers on tap.
L. L.
We love this pub, the history about it. Food is amazing, staff very friendly.
l. b.
Love this place. Always go whenever we're in York.
L. F.
Great place. Was one of our watering holes in the seventies. When the miners strike was on they just had candles and bottled beer great atmosphere
M. W.
Excellent pub ,great selection of beers and food plenty of space outside, old world charm.
S. F.
Very Polite, Helpful and Friendy Staff. The BBQ Burger meal I had was Amazing. Definitely coming back here again. Highly Recommended.
P. P.
Brilliant and cozy pub tucked out of the hustle and bustle of stonegate. Fantastic line of beers on pump and the gin selection is good too.
M.
A very popular pub, you almost step back in time with its olde worlde atmosphere. Can get very busy and the staff are very helpful
N. E.
Great gem in york. Friendly and welcoming staff ... plenty of little rooms to enjoy a drink in. Nice court yard great atmosphere will be calling in again next time in york.
B. F.
This is a really nice pub with great food and fantastically cheerful staff.
Greene King seem to follow a concept of keeping things simple and it really pays off here. Highly recommended.
I. F.
Nice atmosphere, we sat outside on a hot sunny day with a cold beer.
P. H.
Great Sunday roast in a real character pub with 3 beer gardens!
L. A. M.
Couldn't fault the place! Welcoming staff, great old school pub ambiance and lovely food (big portions!!)
Their COVID-19 precautions were OUTSTANDING (all staff wore visors, one way system clearly marked, paper menu's, track and trace, hand sanitiser, 'clean table' signs and more).
Additional plus points; Eat Out to Help Out scheme, allowed dogs, and they offer vegan options too.
10/10 from us....so much so we came back the next day with the family.
Thank you so much!
P. N.
Amazing😃. Excellent menu and very good service. Very atmospheric venue with outdoor seating too. Many thanks 😃
P. E.
Really nice old pub. Awesome atmosphere. Staff really helpful and polite. Would highly recommend. Will go again when back in the area 👍👍👍👍 nice food too. At a good price ☺️
A. W.
We love this place - reputedly the oldest pub in York. You're always assured of a warm welcome, good food, and a great choice of drinks.
J. W.
Welcoming, lovely pub, very dog friendly. Really enjoyed our visit last night and looking forward to a longer stay watching England there tonight.
C. G.
Great little pub, well run with a friendly atmosphere. Pretty standard Greene King drinks and food.
J. F.
Had a lovely time during our day out in york, only down side, my fault left my friends birthday pressie and no time to go back😪😪
D. P.
Very atmospheric, you can sense the history in this place
M. B.
Fabulous for lunchtime stop off while walking the dog and site seeing.
c. t.
Friendly and helpful 👌
D. A.
Fantastic old characterful pub, really good food, staff helpful and friendly, good beers, very cosy atmosphere
P. S.
Great friendly pub, good tasty food. Highly recommend
S. P.
Lovely old inn, lots of separate areas to sit inside & outside area - good choice of drinks - food menu looked good to though didn't try
m. S.
Dog friendly and good food
S. A.
Booked table for 9. Arrived early but table ready. Bar or phone ordering. Plenty staff so good service. Food excellent.
C. P.
Lovely old pub with a good atmosphere with the consistent level of food and drink that you would expect from a Greene King, even if the 'oldest licensed pub' claim is somewhat dubious!
S. T. R. N.
I always love this place. They play fun music to keep a good atmosphere, just loud enough for it to be welcoming and relaxing and just quiet enough to be able to hold conversations fine. Great staff are always super approachable and nice and it's affordable and comfy with lots of different areas.
P. C.
Enjoyed an afternoon drink here, so went back and ate in the evening, nice atmosphere, staff very attentive and friendly
L. B.
Lovely atmosphere, really enjoyed our night
A. H.
Great place, loads of different home brew Ale and lager to try. The pie's are fantastic and highly recommended. Good value for money and quite entertaining watching the waiting on staff trying to figure out who's food belongs to what customer!
J. S.
Another fantastic York pub. Great beer selection and plenty of other drinks choices. Highly recommended.
M. T.
Great pub. Friendly staff and a great gin and bitter lemon.
P. B.
Not bad food, nice ale...
D. M.
Lovely old pub with traditional English food. I loved it!
Despite it being pre-Christmas hectic time, I managed to find a secluded corner with a large wooden table for the family of my tourists and six of us enjoyed our own little party in privacy.
The order arrived quite quickly; the food was very good and the stuff - nice and friendly. Real delight, - thank you!
E. L. F.
Came at a very busy time but the bar staff were polite and apologetic when saying it would be 35mins for food. (Said that was fine because by the time we left and found somewhere else we would probably be looking at that anyway). Had a nice drink in the cozy atmosphere and then our food arrived. I had a fish finger sandwhich (on Ciabatta) and he had Scampi and Chips. The food was very good 👍
k. k.
Such a nice experience from the crowd and the bar itself to the bartenders and the drinks served. A very chill and laid back pub which just looks great already. Boys behind the bar were very helpful and friendly. Definitely a must when in York.
S. B.
Old traditional pub, staff friendly and helpful when picking local ales to try, nice atmosphere. Ordered a Sunday Lunch which was around £15 each, it wasn't well presented but it tatsed nice, just disappointed as seemed expensive for what was delivered but still enjoyable. The atmosphere was fun and drinks good.
S. H.
Nice bar nice staff. Bit expensive £11 for Bacardi n coke and rhubarb gin n tonic. However 2 halves of shandy at £4.10. Quaint plenty of space out the back too. Worth a visit. Good flow of people in there.
N. H.
The oldest pub in York. Very cosy atmosphere. Good drinks selection. Not overly expensive but not cheap. This is not unexpected as it's in one of the busiest tourist areas of York, the shambles. There's decent sized outdoor smoking areas with seats and lights too
A. L.
Fabulous old pub, looks small buy massive inside. Real ales were lovely. Highly recommend 👌
T. E.
Very old pub right in the centre of York. There is literally no frontage, but a narrow alley which opens to the front of the building. There is a prominent banner across the middle of Stonegate marking the location of the lane. Very good selection of ales and a huge slightly of of history. This pub was founded in 1644. Food was good and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.
z.
Good old fashioned pub no frills
C. H.
Good historical visit, okay beer but not our type of pub really, many will love it!
K. W.
Very nice great food fantastic staff thanks 😊
A. N.
Lovely old pub, had a very nice lunch and went back at night for a drink.
S. W.
Friendly staff great pub
D.
Very friendly staff serving a good choice of drinks.
d. d.
Great little place . Cosy atmosphere, great service . Definitely recommend.
D. B.
Just popped in for a social drink with friends, place was lovely nice atmosphere yet relaxing enough to chat with friends. Drinks were spot on, will be back.
K. S.
Great pub located in the heart of York. Good food that is well priced! While the sign is visible from the street the pub itself is located down a short alleyway. Which is just far enough to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a pint and/or some food.
K. C.
Reputedly the oldest Inn in York, almost hidden in a back courtyard. Comfortable, and decent craft ale.
H. R.
Good ale, nice beer. Good food descent price. Good size pub, with beer garden. Families are welcome. No sky sports or Tvs. Thursdays are the best, as they have owesome bands or karaoke.
G. W.
Been to York quite a few times and only just found this place. It's a great place. We ate there twice and would highly recommend the food. Great choice on the menu, and great choice of drinks behind the bar. Staff all lovely and friendly. We'll be back!
j.
2nd visit. (1st time was pre-COVID) Lovely and very old historic pub. Staff handling COVID guidance well. Pub still had a good atmosphere, and were at "new" maximum capacity while we were there. Table service only, and friendly and welcoming staff frequently checked tables for people wanting to order, without being obtrusive. We were told on arrival how long we could have the table for (we weren't eating, just having drinks). Would definitely visit again in the future. Docked one star because was difficult to follow the one way signage for the exit (not just us that had this problem) and nobody was really adhering to the one in, one out of the toilets rule. The "toilet busy" board should have been on the Ladies/Mens toilet entrance doors, and not on a completely separate door, which was confusing. But under these current circumstances, it's all new to them too and am sure will be sorted. Well worth a visit!!
C. F.
Cosy, atmospheric with an interesting history. Food was good. Polite staff.
A. W.
Quality pub. Not the coolest place on the street, but super friendly staff and a good/easy distancing and ordering system. Plus, plenty of space! A precious commodity these days.
J. S.
York city's oldest pub, or at least that's the claim. Enter via a narrow alleyway, (well signposted), a friendly, warm atmosphere, good service.
S. M.
Great atmosphere and great service . We didn't have any food but would definitely go again and try the food, as what we saw looked very nice
S. G.
Love this place - deemed to be one of if not the longest established pub in York. Great staff great food and more importantly great Ales. Happy to let you try a taster before buying a pint. Pub of choice when taking friends round York
M. W.
Brilliant meal, top service, proper people and excellent real ales.
My favourite place in York.
D. R.
Great food and service ,considering the amount of tourists.will visit again.
E.
Great food! Their home made lemon juice is very good too.
J. F.
O.M.G the food here is so good really full but couldn't stop eating the pies are to die for once again prices really good & good selection of ales
C. B.
Enjoyed a lovely meal here. Food & service excellent, will be returning here when my family visit later in the year.
E. E.
Staff were very welcoming especially the lovely young Australian Lady
Just had 2x scampi, chips & peas
2x side salads
The food was cooked okay and presented nicely.
Thank you we enjoyed our visit.
Eian & Karen
J. R.
Nice place, comfy and good drinks. Quite busy and the drinks are very expensive (although most of the city centre are). If you're looking for a lively pub then it's great, but not so much for a quiet drink or two.
A. B.
Lovley pub, friendly staff, God food and beer. Fantastic location, tucked away from the main thoroughfare and to top it all, dog friendly too. 🐶🐶
J. C.
New find. Literally a hidden gem. VERY popular. Good choice of beers and wines. Food quickly served. Pleased we visited.
M. P.
If historic pubs are you're thing then you won't get much more historic than this place. A very cosy multi room pub with beautiful stained glass windows and some plush red leather bench seating, a number of outdoor seating areas and most of all some fine ales in a stunning part of York . One of the best places in the city, without a doubt.
D. S.
Ye old pub, lovely place
D. B.
Although it was "rammed" due to the time of year, and horrendous weather outside, service was excellent. Fast, slick and friendly. Well done All the Staff.
K. D.
A lovely old pub in York. Full of history and atmosphere. Many rooms to sit, drink and chat. Three outside areas! Good reasonably priced food too. Selection of ales for the enthusiast.
a. m.
Extremely busy , but no waiting for drinks , very good service , great atmosphere .
J. F.
Great atmosphere and good was nice
s. w.
Great time , bar drinks only, but what atmosphere for really traditional pub. Really truly old England. Loved it . Don't tell anyone or might get too busy !
K. T.
Friendly pub and nice food but above average prices. Would still recommend
G. S.
Nice old traditional pub, good beer.
D. H.
Go mid week and grab yourself a nice quiet room for a chat with friends. If you are looking for an old pub full of character this place won't disappoint. We never tried the food, just drinks.
D.
Great pub with history , been going for more than 40 years
J. P.
Cosy pub just a few yards from York Minster. Dropped in for a quick lunch being 2 sandwiches and a side of lovely home made chips. Not a great selection of ales or ciders, but food and drink was good value. Service good too.
J. D.
Lovely pub great decor food was excellent and very friendly staff
M. B.
Lovely old pub x
E. T.
It was a good experience. Order your food at the bar and the rest of the table service was excellent.
Had the ultimate fish and chips and it sure was ultimate! The curry on the side for dipping was a great touch.
W. R.
This place is billed as one of the most haunted pubs in York so we decided to pop in for a quick pint. The staff were friendly and there was a good selection of drinks. We didn't eat but the food did look really good.
j. c.
Great food great staff lovely atmosphere
D. S.
So quirky. Great ales...
S. L.
Great food & surroundings.
J. P.
Beers great, would have had five but they weren't lying about it being haunted.. Plastic ghosts are great, real ones standing behind you... you can keep!
M. L.
Great pub, great atmosphere but most of all great ale !!
C. B.
Traditional and Great Beer, Old Peculiar!
L. H.
Staff very friendly and helpful, layout inside offers privacy, garden in back and seating in front courtyard for smokers and al fresco dining. Varied menu and food is good. Historic Inn with some lovely and interesting architectural features.
L. K.
Fabulous place been quite a few times when we visit york great place 👍 great staff 👍 great beer we'll be back at Christmas 🎄🎄
C. C.
Good selection of drinks (the gin in particular!)
Fairly quiet on a Monday night but good atmosphere and friendly service
L. A.
Lovely pub for a drink
j. m.
Good food prices good for where it was
L. H.
Quick service given the current circumstances on a hot busy Saturday afternoon. Lovely, old pub with great surroundings which is swimming in history.
D. R.
A proper old fashion pub with up-to-date methods with service and food which was very good
K. A.
Just popped in for couple sandwiches lush pint
A. A.
Nice pub.. unfortunately the food let it down. Very small portions (and I'm not a big eater) and the side salad I got was 2 plum tomatoes, a small piece of red onion and the smallest amount of lettuce. Not good!!
S. M.
Have eaten here often during our may stays in York and never been disappointed. Food is well presented, fresh and a good price. Pulled pork to die for. Good selection behind the bar too.
M. C. N.
Perfect place to rest and drink a beer.
B. R.
Did enjoy sat had a beer loved the surrounding and daycor . work a stop have a meal or a.pint and enjoy like we did.👍🇬🇧

R. A. 2.
Excellent customer service, food delicious. Drinks lovely. Great relaxing atmosphere
C. J.
We really enjoyed going into Ye Olde Starre Inn. It's very quirky and full of character. Plenty of seating areas both inside and out.
S. B.
This pub is atmospheric and historic. The food was ok but sadly the watercress with the sandwiches was also as historic!
To be fair I think we visited on a very busy day so, would still recommend a visit.
T. K.
The ambience and the Timothy Taylor's ale were good but the meat in my steak and kidney pudding was gristly.
j. v.
Very friendly must see good 🍺
A. B.
an incredible old watering hole in York. great selection of beers and fine ales are available. it has a lovely cozy warm vibe inside and serves a good selection of pub grub as well. It is a grade II listed building and is said to date back to 1644 which you can see from the timber frames inside.
L. S.
Lovely place, great atmosphere, so much character. Delicious food.
W. K.
Lovely old pub. Much bigger than it looks.
J. B.
Good choice of drinks and food menu. Can get very crowded.
B. H.
Great place to get a drink and food. Family friendly and good place to step off the busy street and relax.
E. Y.
Great pub.
Great choice of drinks.
Will definitely go to when visiting York.
P. R.
Claims to be oldest pub in York. Very olde worlde inside. Nice food and a good selection of drinks.
D. T.
Good food, really worthy like a trip website advised me. Also, inside You can feel past times :) Staff are very friendly even under pressure of so many folks at this time. Thanks girls :)
s. h.
Really great food, good beer, friendly team. Hot chicken wings and Halloumi a must!
C. G.
Crowded city centre pub but food great and John and Emma front of house very helpful and a credit your company. Will go back
W. (.
Modern, trendy chain establishment. Large selection of beers, lagers and wines, including craft and real ales, though these were not particularly good and had chance first one. Outside balcony seating overlooking the river Ouse and the city. I believe food is served daily.
G. Y.
Loverly pub. Had food a couple of times during our short stay in York and highly recommended.
