Update: since writing this review Chancellors home office has reached out to me to try to amend the problems and hopefully prevent them from happening again. I still believe you are better off working directly landlord to tenant, but perhaps your experience with chancellors will be better than mine. Original post: You are so much better off to work directly with a landlord. Chancellor's is slow to respond, not very helpful, and uses template rental contracts that may or may not apply to your property. Avoid any miscommunications and delays by working directly with a landlord/tenant.

As a first time renter I found the prospect of finding a property daunting, I had heard all the horror stories on the Oxford housing market and was doubting whether I would be able to find a suitable property. I approached Chancellors and was impressed with how attentive they were, I spoke with Adam and he showed me a wide range of properties and gave me honest recommendations on what would suit my needs. I still needed time before I could move in but Adam understood this and would frequently update me on which properties had been added or removed. We put our house on the market two years ago with another local estate agent and did not receive a single offer. I have appointed Chancellors to act for me as letting agents several times. They were extremely professional and effective agents and found tenants for me within a week or so. Not just any tenants but the RIGHT tenants. Too many agents give little thought to setting the appropriate rent and finding suitable tenants. Many agents set a low rent and sign up the first tenant they find so that they can earn a quick fee. Not so with Chancellors. When problems arose, he was unflaggingly helpful, communicative, and reassuring without being patronising. I viewed over 70 houses this year with almost every estate agent in Oxford, and Paul ranks among the top (and rare) two or three whom I would actually trust. The branch itself - and Chancellors in general - has room for improvement: some other staff are pushy, overly familiar, and too full of the usual off-putting patter. (I realise this is the assumed stereotype of estate agents, but people like Paul and Joe prove there can be a different, more effective way of doing things!) There's also a sense of it being a "lads' lair" filled with uber-competitive men vying in a dog-eat-dog culture, which can impact negatively on clients' experience. So, on balance, I've given the company 4 stars.
