Reviews of French Village Cafe & Bistro

Came in this morning with my mother and father for breakfast, and saw we had to look at the menu online which is a bit of a hassle when paying online as well, the inside of the cafe was nice quite busy. But if you can’t order online the cafe will give you menus and you can go up to the counter and order. 40.00 pound for 2 fry’s and a French toast with bacon. The meal was just okay but so expensive for what? But the staff were very lovely apart from that.

Food was very good and good sized portions, my only issue was 3 of the 4 people got served and 1 of us had a further 10 minute wait for the other lunch. I know it's not a big issue but it lead to 1 person eating on their own or the other 3 waiting until all the food arrived and theirs going cold.
M. F.
One of many places to eat in Botanic. The food was nothing exciting and expensive. Speciality breakfast was very disappointing lacking in both quality and quantity especially at £9.00. Staff were friendly and kindly offered to get a bowl of water for our dog.
R. B.
FV was welcoming for us as lunchtime drop-in customers. Food was good, variety good, service good, ambience good...but a tad pricey. Would I return ? Yes !
M. Y.
Wonderful bistro by the university. Great selections. We went for breakfast and it was very reasonably priced and we left full. The atmosphere is a nice blend of French colors and earthy woods. Food came very quickly. Poached eggs are perfect for my liking with a runny yolk but solid white. All the food we tried tasted very homemade including the hollandaise sauce. Presentation was wonderful.

Smashing place, a Patisserie, Cafe and Restaurant.
Breakfast through evening meal
Med price, food cooked to order.
Staff, friendly and very helpful.
Accessibility - space around the tables a tad (bit tight).
Menu - carnivores, vegetarian and limited vegan, specials board. We did not have space in our tums for pud.
Toilets - very nice.

I do not like ordering via QR code. Where is the experience in that? It's robotic. It's so cold! Food nice.
L. W.
Although very busy, was looked after quickly and friendly. Good food and kids loved the pancakes!
S. B.
A nice place to have a meal in Botanic avenue. Various food options are available including sandwiches and burgers. Vegetarian and vegan options also available.

3 wks in UK so far & just had our #1 or 2 meal at French Village Bakery Cafe, on Botanic & University! FANTASTIC paninis, soup, & latte! Great service too!
I. H.
🌟Tasty food. Excellent place for a delicious brunch. Recommend French Toast and Veggie French fry.
🌟Nice latte coffee.
🌟Easy way to place an order: just scan the QR code on table, choose whatever you like, and pay online. Order point also available.
🌟Friendly and helpful staff, though a bit slow in cleaning the tables — they are too busy ~
🌟One of the most popular restaurants around the Botanic area. May need to queue on weekends. Can choose to sit in/outside or takeaway.

Amazing place, good coffee, we had to run from the boring breakfast that hotel offers, and this place was delicious! And they have a big portions as well!
A. H.
Beautiful place love the deco. We all found our food to be delicious most satisfying meal we've had on our Belfast holiday. Friendly staff, banging tunes. Brilliant!

✅great food
✅great venue
✅great atmosphere
✅great staff (particularly the woman with the shorter haircut who helped with dessert recommendations)
P. O.
Great food at good prices. Club sandwich could be served on a plate. Other than that receives the seal of approval from Mikey.
S. D. L.
Amazing quality food, well cooked, and fantastically presented, staff are lovely, only issue I had was a very hard to talk to waiter, all other waiter/esses were amazing.
T. G.
We went in for coffee/tea but couldn’t resist ordering some food after seeing the menu. We weren’t disappointed...the food was truly excellent. Possibly the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had. They’re working with a high-level of caution for COVID, which we appreciated. Ordering from the app at our table was slightly awkward at first, and you have to input a lot of info up front (credit card details, billing address, etc.), but the food came out extremely quickly after we placed our order, so no complaints there. The staff/service was all friendly and welcoming!
S. O.
Food was ok, nothing special.
J.
Tasty breakfast amd gluten free bread option.
P. D.
The food was lovely. This should be a 5 star review but I really don't understand the need to have plastic knives and forks and paper plates. Surely normal plates and cutlery that are then washed in dishwasher - and therefore sterilised- would be better. Less waste, less plastic and much easier to eat the beautiful food. I do appreciate the difficulty businesses are facing with Covid-19 and continue to wish The French Village well.
M. C.
I had a carrot cake and a hot chocolate. Both things had too much sugar. Please reduce the sugar in your recipes. I had this in the morning and I'm still feeling sick due to the exaggerated amount of sugar in the cake and the chocolate. Both things just tasted of sugar. That's the only flavour they had.

Great cafe for breakfast or a coffee and buns.
We had a cooked breakfast and French toast both were great . Really fresh food and the breakfast was cooked perfectly.
Staff were all really nice and friendly and service was very quick.
We got a scone and cake to takeaway (to eat another day , we aren't monsters 😁) these were great too.
Highly recommend to anyone looked for high quality coffee shop with good range of options for breakfast and lunch .
We will definitely be back .
M. S.
While the food is always good at this place the service, I find, is always slow. No change today. However I think their ordering/menu app could benefit from improvements. For example an edit tool to replace french fries with sweet potatoes fries? Or provide details of daily specials such as highlighting what exactly is the soup of the day. Instead we had to await catching the attention of a server to tell us it was cauliflower, and we had to cancel the order details and replace soup with a different item. Still when the chicken goujons arrived and French toast with blueberry compote and cinnamon cream, all were happy and satisfied. A place for good food but not for those in a hurry.
P. M.
Delicious food! Good value for money. Only problem was the lack of a hello as we waited to be seated. 3 servers passed by as we stood and no 'hello & we will be with you in a minute' was given. That would have been a good start to an otherwise lovely lunch meal
B. S.
Popped in here for lunch one day before heading to the airport for a flight (hence time was an important factor). The place is very popular, but we thankfully got a table for two relatively quickly.
There weren't enough staff to deal with how busy the place was. I can't blame individual staff members for that, they were friendly and helpful, but they were struggling. After eventually getting our food, it was very nice. We both enjoyed our lunch and the atmosphere of the restaurant. However, even paying at the end took longer than it should have. One needs to go to the counter to pay, but there was only one person managing this and the queue was quite long.
I will be back again, because I liked the food and service, but please get more staff working on busy lunchtime periods!
J. K.
Great tasty food and quick friendly service.
J. J.
Lovely meal. Sea bass was done to perfection. Others had reported their meals were great bar the friend who had the fried haddock which was good. For 6 people 180 mains and starters 1 dessert. No corkage charge on the bill.
L. T.
Overall quick and polite service with decent, tasty food
E. S.
Had an amazing crushed avocado sandwich. I added some smoked salmon. The poached eggs were done perfectly, as you cut them the yolk it just pours over the sandwich like heaven descended.
Would say they are a bit pricey and service wasn't greaaat. But the food was very nice.
C. C.
The food here is second to none, the speed and efficiency of the workers was super admirable, especially as it was a really busy, sunny early afternoon, and the area was buzzing with people. Will definitely be back.
A. L.
Truly the best food I can remember ever having, from the simple but oh so delicious pasta dish to a decadent chocolate brownie. Really tasty well cooked food.
For those of you who would like a glass of wine with your meal, they don't serve alcohol but are happy for you to bring your own and they will supply the mixers at a normal price.
A. B.
I had battered cod, chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. It was perfectly cooked. Just what I needed. Dessert was a brownie Sundae, split between 2. It was very sweet and very tasty. Very relaxed, comfy restaurant. BYOB so worked out very well at about £18 each!
M. O.
Amazing food! A bit of a wait because it was busy, but definitely worth it
A. N.
We had a lovely time here on Saturday night, welcomed by friendly staff on arrival. The food was lovely but the best part was the Banoffee Pie, gorgeous but maybe a little more banana in the middle next time? Gorgeous place and we will be back :)
l. C.
Best breakfast I've had in a long time! Food delicious and quick service
M. M.
Welcoming staff - waiter is extremely accommodating and has a good sense of humour. Good selection on the menu & food was delicious. Have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed.
A. P.
What a wonderful find this place is. Wonderful food, great service and reasonably priced. Three courses and a coffee for under £30. Delicious fresh ingredients and fish was so delightful it melted in my mouth. My first visit here and if I'm back here again on business it won't be my last.
J. F.
Nice and good cafe, not too busy. I've had a french toast that was fantastic!!! Must give a go
M. K.
Very Very busy at lunch (get there early to get a seat) the food is served quite fast and it very wholesome, some health alternative in there as well. The staff are very attentive too, and you should be greeted quickly upon entering. There is a great take-away aspect to this place as well, but expect to walk away with more buns that you hadn't expected to purchase before you went in!
J. G.
Lovely little café. Good value for money, delicious food and friendly service.
M. B.
Expensive yet very popular...i thought £8 for small fry was expensive...nice selection of french pastries though..
C. D.
The food and atmosphere were fantastic however the service after we received our mains was very slow. Desserts took a long time to come and the coffee machine had been switched off so no coffees available.
K. M.
When greeted at the door the member of staff could have been a bit more welcoming. Didn't crack a smile but having said that had an amazing breakfast sandwich . Bacon sausage and egg in soda bread. Lush!!!
l. b.
This place is an unsung gem. Fabulous menu; every dish we had (and there were 6 of us) was superb. I highly recommend the food here. Our service was excellent and just as if it could nt get any better it is byo.
J. M. L.
I do a lot of food photography. I get treated to some lovely dishes and mostly it is really yummy. However a few weeks ago I was shooting some food here and we were under pressure to get them all finished. So I never got a chance to taste any of the dishes. But just as I was leaving after the shoot I was given a Scotch Egg and a Sausage Roll, just to keep the hunger at bay. The Scotch Eggs was outstanding, however the Sausage Roll was simply out of this world - By far the best Sausage Roll I have ever eaten. Thank you for my very satisfied taste buds!
t. M. N.
Staff were so nice and coffee was gorge. Heater outside are great. Nxt time ill defo get food xxx
N. N.
They have nice avocado mix, their poached eggs are really nice overall a great meal. It was a bit hard to eat with plastic cutlery.
G. D.
Amazing brunch, such great flavours
m.
Everytime I pass by, i must stop for a cafe latte! The cinnamon pownder on top of that foam of that coffee is just amazing! Its cozy inside, smoking area outside is nice, the welcoming is sweet, well dressed staff as well, very professional
O. B.
Great food all day long. Byob service with a small corkage fee. Beautiful restaurant inside with seating outside as well. Service is always good, on my last visit we were well looked after by the manager Perri.
G.
The decor is very rustic and eclectic. It makes for a great laid back friendly atmosphere. The lunch meal is small but attractively priced! This little gem is tucked away on the Botanic Ave side of Belfast so you need to go and search it out, I will definately be returning and recommending it to friends.
e.
Excellent servicesnd excellent food.good health options.i recommend "the vegan"
B. A. J.
Great banoffee and chai latte
M. S.
Lovely place. Great customer service. Found a piece of plastic in my soup and the manager promptly inquired and found it was from a tapaware and decided to give us a free meal for the whole family. We quickly "reinvested" this money in a few yummy macarons!!!
N. M.
It has gorgeous food and desserts. There's a takeaway for soup/salads/sandwiches/sausage rolls if you want during the week. Has a fan selection of menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only thing I would say is that it isn't a particularly big place and can be quite busy so you will likely need to wait.
M. R.
We didn't have the best experience. Orders were taken from those around us though we arrived before them. I ordered a club sandwich which was poorly constructed and contained little bacon. The avocado in the chicken burger was saturated with lemon and had the consistency of Smash. The food came on wooden cutting trays rather than plates.
G. M.
Food was tasty and plentiful. Very accommodating staff.
R. C.
Food was alright, service was lacking
S. K.
Lovely place. Got seated quickly. Great options for breakfast. Service was prompt. Had gluten free bread also.
C. D.
Great food at very reasonable price! Little wait for table at lunch time however can only be a good thing! Service is always efficient and great quality food.
P. M.
I've been frequenting this place for the past 3 years. Having lived in the area and tried basically all other cafes nearby, I can whole heartedly admit that the French village is one of the nicest you'll find, perhaps in all of Belfast.
The menu prices are comparatively cheap and there is a decent selection of food. I cannot recommend their fries enough however, I dare say it challenges that of my own mother! They are the only cafe I know of that will let you substitute eggs (which I don't like) for sausages or bacon, most places are quite stingy when it comes to such requests. I also recommend the bagels with cream cheese and bacon, very nice as a breakfast takeaway.
The staff have always been very friendly. Of course, like anywhere else, there are going to be times when they are stressed out and maybe getting a few things wrong, but this happens rarely here and if it does, give them a chance. One time I can remember in particular, it was really busy with only 2 staff on, a person at one table got a slightly wrong order, the staff tried to deal with it as nicely and efficiently as possible, but the students at the table were so impatient and complaining in some high brow manner like spoilt kids. After our meal, the staff offered us and everyone else discount on the price because they were 'poor' in terms of service. To be honest, that sort thing happens everywhere once in a while, so I refused the discount.
But anyway, definitelycheck this place out, especially for breakfast! Nice cakes too!
j.
Great coffee friendly staff number 10 bang bang chicken wrap get on it tasty
A. V.
Friendly customer service, amazing quality coffee.
Unfortunately coffee is served in paper cups even when sitting in
T. B.
Been to French village a couple of times only had breakfast here but it was very enjoyable food and so was the coffees was great so were the staff, prices aren't too bad, over all I would recommend
D. M.
Used these guys for a delivery of cakes for a family birthday. Ordered online on a Saturday afternoon for delivery first thing (before 0830) the following Monday. The cakes were great but the service was even better. The delivery address was obscure to say the least - an apartment in a block of flats set behind commercial properties down an un-named alley in the centre of Belfast! - but these guys tried and tried and after 4 phone calls the cakes were successfully delivered (many thanks to Tom for waiting outside the apartment block whilst we called and sent down the surprised recipient). Genuine customer service in a time when it is so often absent! We will be definitely be using them again.
D. M.
Fantastic food and great service. Great for breakfast and very friendly staff. Me and my family keep revisiting it.
G. A.
Big portion but small option
C. M.
Nice enough food but be aware that at the moment you are paying premium prices to eat out of a cardboard box with a plastic knife and fork.
f. l.
Love this place and you will toooooooo
R. D.
Good brunch menu well served Pity about cardboard plates plastic knives and forks and paper cups ! Looking forward to end of covid restrictions
S. M.
Warm atmosphere good music and really friendly staff. Would reccomend to anyone wanting a quick coffee to a full sit down meal! Food is also excellent
K. W.
Lovely food... great deli... friendly staff... little pricey for a cafe bistro dining experience but good quality...
C. W.
went to a french village last year outside Toulouse in France for my holidays. Did notice some big differences between there and this cafe. Not sure what village the franchise is set upon, possibly suggest putting for example Toulouse cafe & bistro as more tailored experience instead of vague "french" umbrella.
B. L.
Very nice fry
J. F.
If you like big buns loaded with enough sugar to send the cookie monster into a diabetic coma, then this is the place for you. I highly recommend the mint chocolate traybakes, although the rocky road is also fantastic as are the red velvet cupcakes. They're all good, just don't tell your fitbit
E. S. B.
Great food and loved the milkshake. The staff was really welcoming and we really got our money's worth.
D. K.
Great BYOB (bring your own) and perfect if you find yourself walking the streets with a wine bottle or two and nowhere to go. Good size of portions for food as well.
