Definitely my best meal ever in Belfast. All the courses are wonderfully delicious. The staff is great, kind and accessible, very professional. Only 2 things to improve, it is lightly too hot in the room and the waiting between the courses is a bit long but still ok. The prices are lower than same quality restaurants in France. 5 stars absolutely deserved.

Was very tasty, will definitely be back, the bed was among the best I've had (would have went a little heavier with the horseradish, but that's my preference), the pork fat was like butter and the squid was Unbelievable. Our only complaint is a bottle of water. We asked for a picture of water and were brought a out a bottle. It was already open and poured straight into our glasses without any further questions. We assumed that this was maybe just the done thing at Shu, but then the table next to ours was brought out a picture. We Explained the miscommunication and were then brought out tap water. The bottled water was warm and really didn't taste any different than the tap water, which was colder than room temperature at least. When the bill came we found that the unwanted, warm bottle was £4.50. If you're going to charge that much for a bottle of water, it should at least be chilled. Rather than complain we just took the cost out of what would have been left as a tip. We will be back eventually as the food was delicious, but will be very clear when asking for water that we want a jug of cold tap-water, not a £5 bottle that's been kept in the heat of the kitchen, and opened and poured into our glasses before we have a chance to explain the misunderstanding.

When we arrived at the restaurant we were one of the last reservations. So the restaurant was really full. We seated to a not very enjoyable table and I asked the manager if we could move to any better. The manager was very polite and he moved us immediately to a very nice table. It was very pleasant. The atmosphere was nice and the place is very well decorated. However it was bit noisy for the style of restaurant it is. The ladies next to us were bit drunk and they were noisy… The food was very delicious, the slow cooked beef was excellent. Sadly the portions were very small. That was something I didn’t really enjoyed. I know that places with gourmet food rarely have big portions, but I think that portions here were much smaller than the average. The wine was very nice and in a very good temperature, I really enjoyed it. The prices were reasonable. Concluding, I would say that the overall experience was good, the food was tasty but I would enjoyed it more if the portions were bit bigger.

Honestly the most delicious meal out I've had in a long time. Definitely by far the best I've had in Belfast. Service was great and staff were extremely friendly. A lovely, welcoming atmosphere and, while it's pricey, it didn’t feel at all overpriced. Couldn't recommend highly enough

Took a friend here for their birthday lunch. Had not been to Shu in well over a decade. Lovely decor and a nice welcome. The menu was varied and food delicious including beef tartare for starter, slow cooked lamb for main and pistachio and olive oil cake for dessert which was a revelation. At the end, asked for the bill and the waitress said she would get it but no rush to us to have to get up and leave now we were finished which was nice. Don't know why I hadn't been here in so long but I will definitely come back.

Food was good but service was slow with long wait between courses and no acceptable explanation given just that they were very busy and plating of main course depends on when starters are cleared. This did not explain why two groups who had arrived after us had orders taken before we did or why they had finished mains long before ours arrived. I had the pleasure of dining in this fantastic restaurant over the weekend. I had dined here last year and couldn't wait to return. It is, for me, in the top three best restaurants in Belfast. This restaurant never disappoints and is consistent in terms of the quality of its food and service, which is always top notch. I was with a party of four and when we arrived, we were met with a friendly welcome from the Manager (Jamie) and quickly shown to our table. The restaurant was very busy and had a lovely atmosphere. I have to commend the waiter who served our table. The service was impeccable! He was extremely knowledgeable in terms of the food/menu and made an excellent wine recommendation for our party. Even though the restaurant was very busy, he was very attentive and friendly throughout the evening without being overbearing and kept our wine glasses full. The food - what can I say - as always, it was sublime! Each course was beautifully presented and elaborated and we were given just the right amount of time between each course to digest and never felt rushed. The menu is varied (one of our party is vegan and the menu had good options for her). I had the salt & chilli squid for starter (which is a firm favorite for me) and the slow cooked lamb which was cooked to perfection. Simply delicious!! Disappointing in lots of ways. Impossible to talk when it's so noisy. Everyone was shouting over the noise. The service was barely polite and a bit condescending. The food was nothing special. Style over substance splashes on the plate. There are efinitely many better small innovative restaurants to go to where the food is handled carefully and lovingly.

Went to Shu on a team day out and had a three course meal. Food was amazing, and the portions not too big just enough to allow me enjoy and finish each course, which I rarely get to do in a restaurant with bigger portions. Staff were very pleasant and food arrived with appropriate timings between each course. I will definitely be back.

The food was great. A real treat. We had a bread basket to share and opted to skip starters, instead going for a main of beef and a main of lamb with a side of chips. We were seated quickly but sadly that's where the service dipped. It took quite some time for our order to be taken, and when it was we waited a further 10-15mins before receiving pesto and butter but with no bread. After a 5 minute wait, during which time the table next to us had both ordered and received theirs (despite arriving after us too) we asked for the bread again and it arrived a few minutes later. Unfortunately we hadn't finished the selection of bread before the mains arrived due to the delay in getting the bread initially. As mentioned the food was great, without any complaints from us. The table next to us wasn't as pleased and complained of it being cold, and sent it back. In hindsight some of my lamb selections were cold, but being a relative food novice I'd assumed it supposed to be like that. It was still delicious. Overall wouldn't go back. Would recommend only on the basis of excellent food, but service was a let down so couldn't recommend overall.

Food was lovely and the service was warm and friendly. My partner's lamb was very good, he said, and my miso glazed aubergine was umami. Dessert was gorgeous too. Time between courses was okay. I've had better cocktails, however, and there was too much ice for my preference (especially since they're £10 each). We weren't provided our bread basket. We did see a waiter come over to our area with a bread basket only to walk away with it, then shortly after our main was served by someone else, so by the time they remembered they were too late. A bit slow to wait for our bill but it was busy to be fair. From sit down to bill it took 1hr 30 for 2 courses.

We went to Shu on Thursday night (after having ruled out Deanes at Queen's because their menu was so limited). Shu was a real revelation and by far the better choice! I had the beef tartare from the a la carte menu and it was delicious, a generous portion of tender, tasty beef and spicy, hot little capers. I chose the confit duck from the 6-12-6 menu as a main (it's great you can mix and match from the two menus). The duck was a little dry, but good nonetheless. The beetroot on the side was sharp and tangy and a great addition to the plate. The chunky chips were crispy and delicious. We skipped desert. The food was superb, high quality dining. Well presented and very good value. (Much better value than Deanes and better quality too, I think). My only criticism is the ambience. We sat at the banquettes against the wall and it wasn't comfortable as the cushions are saggy and flat. The dining room itself feels a little tired and dated. It's in need of a revamp to bring it up to date. That won't stop me going back though. The food was superb and Shu is well worth a visit if you want a Michelin quality meal at a surprisingly affordable price. Two courses for two people and a bottle of very good Sauvignon was less than £80! Highly recommended.

It was served as soon as we sat down so I guess it had not been made from fresh. I asked for a 15 minute interval until the next course which didn't happen so couldn't finish my main. Its one of my bugbears, getting food served so quickly one after the other. All in all,it was nice to eat here, but not quite as relaxed due to the quickness of the courses.

Absolutely beautiful meal. Went for an anniversary, which is the second time I've been and I have to say this place deserves every 5 star review it gets. The staff are skilled in what they do, the food is genuinely delicious and tbh it's not really that expensive as far as "fancy" restaurants go. Large list of wines and I would eat literally everything off the menu. I enjoyed the atmosphere before it had the renovations but sitting in Jul's downstairs in the basement felt rather cosy and I can only imagine how special it would feel to have the pianist playing while you eat. Definitely recommend.

Came to Belfast to catch up with an old friend and booked Shu for a 6pm dinner. The whole experience was pretty much faultless. The staff were extremely professional and friendly without being in any way intrusive. Mushroom croquette starter was glorious, my friend’s squid equally so. Main course lamb was melt in your mouth, my cod was lovely (could have used a slightly less subtle jus that’s the only thing I could say that was bad about it) winter greens were fresh and tasty and the chips perfect. Mille feuille spiced apple dessert not too sweet with a creamy ice cream - perfect. And the cheese plate was perfect. Just perfect. 5 stars to Shu we will be back.

What a gorgeous place. We came here for a birthday and the service was outstanding. The food was amazing, the kind you go to tase higher class food not to get stuffed. My only issue was that when I made a booking no one made it clear that to get the offer you had to sit downstairs but once we got there we were moved without in issue. The fairy lights downstairs are very romantic. Would recommend for a special occasion.

Just read before going about the money invested in the restaurant and a real pity they had to shut down again so soon. Looks the part, but certainly has the food to match. Not an inspiring selection and many were very dry because they were either too old or had not been stored correctly. Negatives aside, I would certainly visit again.

Really good food and service. Lots of cocktails and the usual array of gin. Located on Lisburn road, Belfast, Shu has been a solid performer for years. There is a private dining area for groups upstairs and the public area on the ground floor. There is a varied wine list though not extensive, it's good enough to fill the majority of diners palettes. Staff are energetic and efficient. Casual dress is acceptable and walk-ins maybe accommodated outside the busy times. I would recommend, though, that you book in advance.

I gratefully received a Shu gift voucher for my 40th birthday from my awesome cousin and upon my sister visiting home from London decided to book for a Friday evening meal. We were greeted and seated promptly by friendly engaging staff. I had a lovely starter of squid and my sister had goats cheese both super. My sister enjoyed the Shu 75 cocktail as designated driver I had a soft drink. For main course I had sirloin steak which was perfectly cooked medium to rare asvi like it and my sister enjoyed the beef sides were generous and complimented the main perfectly. The service was fantastic friendly and genuine informative and not overbearing. I ordered the Tiramsu for dessert which was nice but a bit boozy for my tastes my sister enjoyed a glass of red which she found excellent and living a much more cosmopolitan life than myself rated this and the entire evening highly. If I could suggest any changes that would improve the dining experience it would consist of three things. The tables are spaced quite close together and the lady next to us was eavesdropping our conversation the waiting staff uniforms are not great I think it could be changed for the better of all and the dessert menu was not to as high a standard as the starters and mains but was not bad either. I will definitely return soon great venue.

Parking on the Lisburn Road can be a little difficult, but it's worth it. I had the wood pigeon and it was the best meal I'd had for several months.

Hello all, I recently came to Shu for a birthday meal, celebrating a man whom I will refer to as Big Dan. A momentous occasion I'm sure you will agree. Our starters arrived and I tell ya, they went down a treat. For the first time in my life I felt an overture of flavours, textures and emotions. I ate a small plate of cod, and my mind wandered back to being a babe, eating fish fingers. Whilst the quality of Shu's food was undeniably greater, it tickled a longing for simpler times that stirred my very soul. My main course arrived. A beautiful selection of woodpidgeon cuts adorned with beautiful beetroot. As a humble man I am used to the tender taste of street pigeon, but this meaty dish made me feel like a king of old. Through the delightful interplay of flavours, I was reminded of the horrors and excesses of feudalism. Altogether though, a delightful dish. Shu is great and the service in particular was excellent. I felt like a great big fancy man and its always nice to feel that way. Thank Shu! Hahahahahahaha

Saving the best, or at least our friends’ favorite for last, we went to Shu on Lisburn road, the coolest, trendiest neighborhood in Belfast, right before heading out for our flight. Again our friends knew everyone there, so we had the best seat in the house, though we may have ended up with the same anyway as it was fairly empty on a Tuesday for lunch. Shu has won a huge number of awards and focuses on simple, fresh, seafood and steak. The previous chefs left some time ago, and the new chefs set out to redefine the menu and put their own touch on it. They removed everything, but due to so many customer requests, had to add back this salted chili squid starter to the menu. Again all four of us got it. The squid itself was something akin to the best fried calamari ever, but very chewy and crispy without being rubbery. The sauces added nice spice to it and the creamy one helped put out the fire. This is the must try dish of the restaurant, if not all of Belfast. The steak and frites, which looks much smaller in the picture than real life, perhaps due to the immensity of the fries, was good enough to restore our friend’s faith in steak after a few rough meals. It was the first piece of perfectly cooked pink, or medium rare steak we found in the city. The secret according to the waitress was that they, unlike most other restaurants around, slow cook the meat so that the fat melts, rather than burning off or searing. Regardless, it was equal to the steak we had on our visit three years ago which I fondly remember as one of the best steaks I’ve had. The salad was even delicious with flakes of parmesan cheese. The chips were good but a bit boring and a bit too thick for my taste, but the green monster foam went well with them. It must have been intended for the fries because the steak had no need for it. The extremely photogenic dessert, if I do say so myself, was a banana and dark chocolate brownie with yogurt cream. We had to get this as it was made with Valrhona chocolate which we always get ourselves for Christmas each year. The quality has declined in my opinion in the last two years, but it didn’t seem to effect the brownie. The yogurt was so good it got us thinking about how we could get an ice cream machine to make something similar. Apparently whoever supplies honeycomb for Belfast has worked out a great deal with every restaurant in town because each menu featured an ice cream with honeycomb item. Still, the texture and flavor differences make for a great pairing.

War anlässlich meines Geburtstages und auf Empfehlung eines Freundes im Shu essen und wurde definitiv nicht enttäuscht. Reservierung war einfach über die Website des Restaurants vorzunehmen und war auch problemlos für den gleichen Tag (immerhin ein Samstag) möglich. Wir saßen im unteren Teil des Restaurants welcher eine wunderschöne, entspannte Bar-Atmosphäre ausstrahlt. Wir wunden sehr freundlich empfangen und zu unseren äußerst gemütlichen Plätzen geleitet auch ansonsten waren die Bedienungen sehr aufmerksam. Zum Essen ist nicht viel zu sagen außer: Es war perfekt! Das einzige was ich beim nächsten Besuch anders machen würde, wäre keine Beilagen zum Hauptgang bestellen, die Gerichte sind ausreichend groß. Wartezeiten gab es quasi nicht und die Cocktails auf der Karte waren soweit ich es beurteilen kann auch sehr lecker. Das ganze ist zwar für deutsche Verhältnisse schon im oberen Preissegment angesiedelt aber Service, Qualität des Essens und Ambiente rechtfertigen diesen definitiv. There were almost no waiting times and the cocktails on the menu were, as far as I can tell, very tasty. The whole thing is already in the upper price segment by German standards, but the service, quality of the food and ambience definitely justify it. Gladly again :)

Eksplozja smaków, dało się wyczuć, smaki dobrego mięsa, świeżych warzyw odpowiednio dobranych przypraw. Efekt końcowy, każdego zaserwowanego dani był zaskoczeniem. Obsługa kompetentna, znająca się na daniach, winach uśmiechnięta. Fajnie jeśli ktoś robi co lubi, goście tez to czują.
