This place is a bit of a mixed bag. The first time we went on a Saturday night, it was fantastic. I loved the steak, it was a huge filling portion and very reasonably priced. We had a great time, and the atmosphere, the food, and the drinks were all perfect for an anniversary dinner. We so thoroughly enjoyed ourselves that we decided to return the following day for the Sunday roast, thinking we would experience much of the same. However this was only setting us up to be disappointed. The roast was, well, fine. Nothing truly special, and we were surprised that somewhere that had served us such delicious food the previous day could produce something so average. We ate most of it, and largely wished we had perhaps opted for another steak. That is, after all, what this place is. Lesson learned: go to a steakhouse, order the steak.

Ate here for 3 nights as I was staying in the Premier Inn. Food was amazing. Steak was cooked to perfection and the halloumi fries were delicious. As good as the steak was I would defo reccomend the mighty block burger it was my favourite meal of the 3 days the brisket was cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese is a delicious side dish to add and the sticky toffee pudding was so good, it was full of flavour and still fluffy and not overdone. The staff were all amazing they were attentive and quick and i wasnt waiting long for anything. When I was seated I was given complimentary beef popcorn, I initially thought I had misheard but it was definitely beef popcorn and it is now my new obsession. It sounds weird but it works. I would recommend based off the staff and popcorn alone. But the food was also really good

The bad - Didn't have a few of the cocktails or wine on the menu, didn't bring sauce (after asking if we wanted sauce), didn't bring Desert menu (after asking if we wanted dessert). The good - Very cool place, lovely decor and friendly staff. Food was exceptional. Keep up the good work!

Went out for a date night and the staff were so lovely. The food was great. It did take a while and the steak ordered was medium well and it came rare. Very rare! Considering a 16oz isn’t cheap it wasn’t the best. We were so chuffed by the service we will be back. Great atmosphere too.

Let's just say I came here at the right time because I haven't eaten good steak in a while...this was awesome. I had a well done steak and it was covered in some oily sauce (can't remember the name), and most importantly it was decently priced. Came here for a Sunday Roast- very good food and cooked extremely well. Kieran was great too- very accommodating and made sure our table were served well (asking for 1 roast to have the beef well done, and gravy to be kept separate). Two of our table were high risk from Covid too and we were given a choice of where to sit in order to be a bit further away from other people to make us feel less anxious- very great service from the staff. Will be back for another roast soon and will need to try other dishes on the menu too! Thanks!

I've been here with the same group of friends for a few years, we like to come back for the festive menu. Unfortunately we noticed the service hasn't been as good lately. The food is brilliant and the atmosphere is vibrant and great for a Friday/Saturday night, but service was slow on our most recent visit (which I appreciate can happen on busy nights but we could see staff standing around!) and some side orders/drinks were completely forgotten about. That said, when we've been on quieter days, it's been brilliant - the breakfast is excellent too!

Lovely Sunday lunch steak meal. Had the trio of steaks. In hindsight should have just gone for ribeye as the pieces of meat on trio so small they ended up not being medium rare. I took my son here for his 21st birthday, We were greeted well and when seated were given complimentary beef flavor pop corn and water .We both ordered burgers which were rich and tender and grilled nicely, Swallowed down with a pint of Stella . The chips are great too proper steak chips,, Our waitress Kelly was very friendly and helpful , some time after we managed desserts .Bill came to £51 of which i feel was reasonable me being an ex Chef. All in all a very enjoyable time .will visit again.

Regular Visitors pre-Covid as we worked in Town. The welcome was good. My BF enjoyed his lamb chops. My chicken and chips were dry. When I asked about beers, the Waitress laughed and said they had nothing on draught then walked off so I never got to order a cocktail I was looking at. We still tipped 10% but I wasn't impressed. One of the soap dispensers was empty in the Ladies'.

One part of the place is for eating, the other part is the bar where besides beer cocktails are served. Nice interior design with a neon cow so you can see from which part your piece of steak is coming from. Lots of choice in starters and deserts.

We booked online a week which was really easy to book, this was under the covid-19 eat out to help out scheme. The venue looked really clean, tidy and well sign posted with distance signs. The food was great, came in good time of ordering. The service was ok, obviously the staff kept their distance due to covid. Staff didn’t wear any masks, and customers were seated one seat apart (at least 1 metre away) Overall it was good experience at this restaurant the food was lovely and I would recommend going. ☺️

During my visit in the evening, I had a ribeye steak and the brownie. The food was tender, crispy, and brownie was rich, soft and very well made. The food alone was very pleasant as well as the chilled environment. It was a lovely experience. However, the place was clearly understaffed. We had to ask the waiters over every time when we wanted to order food and deserts. Further, there was clearly a dispute between the waiters as they were arguing in plain sight. Finally, one of the waiters passed us the bill before being asked. They were rude and we felt unwelcomed. Overall, it's good food but service needs improving a lot.

Dear oh dear. What do I say. Fantastic staff welcoming me and my partner on entry, we were asked for preference of seating- instead of just being yeeted anywhere thats free. Ordered our drinks, ordered our food... meanwhile getting a free beef-dripping popcorn. The ribeye was absolutely delicious, so much so I wished I had gotten the 12oz or even the 16oz cut!! Me and my partner absolutely loved it, we'll be returning here next time we visit Birmingham

Delicious steakhouse. The decor and ambience of the place is great, I always alternate between the 10oz rump with salad and thick cut chips, and the block burger.... food is fresh and the price point is a lot fairer than others in the city cemtre without skimping on the quality. The staff are normally a good laugh too. You also get some free beef dripping popcorn with your food, which is a .... unique taste.

Wow, this place does not disappoint, 10/10 for food and service. This is my second visit here and can honestly say best steak ive had the pleasure of eating hands down, it just melts in the mouth, absolutely delicious and packed full of flavour. My fella had the steak sampler, 4oz each of fillet, rump and sirloin, literally not a crumb left on his plate! I had the 8oz fillet, the fave! And also tried the dirty fries this time and I 100% recommend 👌. Do yourself and your taste buds a favour and book a table! Our next visit is going to be on a Sunday for the roast dinner! Cant wait! 😋

The food was good, but the service let it down. No salt on the table and none offered (nor any saucess, although the adjacent table were offered both when their food arrived - my waitress was gone as soon as she dumped the food) and the staff seemed to be avoiding my end of the dining room. Also, after clearing the dessert, it took about 25 minutes for the bill to arrive. It's a shame, as the food was tasty and the steak was perfectly cooked.

Service was fantastic by our server Jacob, but when he put the meals on the table I almost fell off my chair laughing, there was a small piece of meat and a small container with about 10 chips in it. No mushrooms, no peas, no onion rings so had to order a side order of onion rings. Great restaurant but address the portion sizes and put some extras on the plate.

Happened upon this place by chance and decided to go in. It wasn't overly busy, around 4pm on a Friday. Nice interior, clean tables and plenty of friendly staff. Menu seemed somewhat limited, and had few vegetarian options - although it is a steakhouse. I ordered a medium ribeye and it was perfectly cooked. I'd have liked a little more green on the plate, perhaps some broccoli or similar. Overall, a good experience but I wouldn't rush back. The menu was too limited.

Can't fault any of the food we had. Starters were very good. Steak was excellent. Sadly the only thing I wanted on the desert menu they had ran out of but my partner said his sundae was very nice. Price wise, I would say slightly on the expensive side for what we had but as I say, can't fault the quality of anything. Burgers that other diners had looked lovely and we would possibly go again and try them. Only downside really is that none of the staff seemed that thrilled to be there and service was all very 'robotic'

Nice, warm cosy atmosphere. Staff were friendly. Beers and wines were good. Selection of food seemed to be limited. The menu we had only showed a snack menu, we ordered a tandoori chicken burger with sweet potato fries. The portion you got was not very filling and eye wateringly pricey. The toilets were way to far and below the building. Had to walk down a lot of steps and turning corners to get there. This was a Christmas drink special with friends and I probably won't be returning.

The atmosphere and service in this place is fantastic. I didn't love my steak, I thought it was a little undercooked, kind of gelatinous which isn't ideal for a steak. The triple cooked chips didn't taste triple cooked, and the beef dripping popcorn was certainly an experience. I'd definitely come here again, just perhaps not at lunch time in the future as I did feel my food was rushed out.

I visited on Saturday 25th January with my mum, sister and friend. We didn't have a reservation but after being refused entry to a restaurant as my mum has a disability scooter, we decided to try elsewhere and ended up here at the Bar and Block on Waterloo Street, Birmingham. Kelly couldn't have been more accommodating and advised how we could access the restaurant to avoid the steps. The service was amazing, as was the food. Thank you to Kelly, Jack and the whole team for making us all feel welcome and allowing us to celebrate our day out in your establishment. Definitely will be returning.

I was best man for a friend last year and needed to organise a meal for a group of about 20 people for a stag do in Birmingham city centre. I'd struggled to find anywhere that a) had availability and b) didn't need a deposit from to reserve a table for us. I called ahead with a couple of weeks notice and they were able to accommodate my group without issue. I must admit I didn't have particularly high hopes and assumed it would be average but I'm pleased to say that everyone in the group agreed that the food was excellent. We ordered a mixture of steaks and burgers and not one single order or side was missed or served incorrectly and everyone was highly complimentary of the quality of the food they got. It was reasonably priced too, which had been a concerned as some of the group were a little parsimonious, to say the least. There was a good choice of drinks and it was voted as win all round. They did a great job and saved me a lot of aggro, so I'm eternally grateful. I have no doubt you'd get an equally high standard of service for a smaller group.

Pretty good competitor to Miller and Carter (for which I have very little time these days). Perhaps not quite as upmarket as M&C (certainly not as upmarket as M&C thinks it is), Bar and Block nonetheless has much to recommend it. Really mixed feelings. The food is great as is the vibe. Have eaten here several times. We have had a problem thou. Visited on a Sunday evening at about 8.30 and asked for a table for 2. Asked if we had a reservation, which we didn't, and we were told that they were no free tables as they were fully booked. At this time I would estimate that only about a 3rd of the tables were occupied. So we are elsewhere. Our journey back took us past again and it was virtually empty! If you don't want our business then fine, there is plenty of competition in walking distance....

After receiving my starters, I noticed one of them looked like it may contain milk, to which I had already made the waiter aware of my allergy. I pulled another waiter to the side and asked if he could check for me. The waiter came back and said to me, "I don't actually know if it contains milk but does contain mayo" I told the waiter this answer was not good enough and It is important that I know for sure. Another more experienced waiter came over and basically took over, apologised and quickly got a manager to bring over the allergy book. Problem solved. Food was lovely, high quality steak. However no side salad or even garnish included and didn't look very much for the money. My main concern with this restaurant is that the toilets looked like they had been pulled directly from a service station. Toilet paper everywhere, broken soap dispensers, dirty floor. Simply not acceptable in a restaurant of this level. (Or any other for that matter) Second Waiter was great, beef flavoured complimentary popcorn was amazing, high quality steak but just let down by poor training and horrible toilet facilities.

Not for the none meat lover. This is a Steakhouse, with a neon cow on the wall showing quite clearly from where your steak comes. A warm welcome followed by some warm popcorn, and a menu with a good selection of dishes but mostly focused on, guess what, STEAK. My rib-eye was well cooked and seasoned with some three times cooked chips. You pay a bit more of you want some healthy vegetables. Overall a nice places, doubles as a breakfast room in the morning, and a pretty passable steak.

Full English breakfast costs £9 but you can have as many drinks as you want and as much toast butter and preserves as you wish. Is self service so you can go round for seconds or more. This is a review of their breakfast offer having dined there before as a main evening meal. On previous experience (having had a sirloin there) it was excellent, absolutely EXCELLENT. To get a properly seasoned, flavourful, tender steak cooked absolutely right is a rarity but they cut to order at these restaurants (the urbanised, modernised version of the existing Beefeater, and much improved for it) and it was a delicious meal. I ordered the steak and eggs £7.50 with breakfast potatoes. This comes with two fried eggs - sadly fried in oil which I hate (really, really hate - to me I expect that in a caf, not in a restaurant...), I always add a bit of butter or use a combo fat like Lurpak spreadable which contains butter so I had the oily taste that I really really hate with fried eggs (yes, I'm picky when it comes to my eggies). However, the eggs were cooked how I like them - soft so the yoke could be combined with my steak, but also cooked on the top surface of the egg yolk too so it wasn't all snotty (apologies if you, are, currently, eating your breakfast). The steak - arrived cut up which I must say I found quite odd. Whilst I'm 52 as I write this and probably heading towards a time when I'll once again need my food cut up for me, I'm capable of cutting into a steak myself so I'm not quite sure why it was presented like this. I think it was probably rump and whilst tasty and cooked exactly as ordered, it was v v v slightly not as tender as I like. I'd like the option to be able to upgrade to a sirloin and pay extra - I'd pay extra to have my eggs cooked not in oil as well but that's just me :-) My eating companion relished the arrival of her choice, the buttermilk pancakes with dry cured smoky bacon. Imagining a stack of them topped with super crispy streaky bacon... mmm. However, it was 3-4 mini-size pancakes presented side by side - they looked slightly bigger than the small pancakes you can get in a packet from Asda, but less fluffy - in fact, they didn't look freshly made even if they were - pretty flat and blurgh. The accompanying bacon had been cooked such that it was folded over on itself and 90% of the fat had not been rendered to crispiness - it was completely white and some of the fat, literally, had obviously not even made contact with the pan, it was still completely white - this did not please my compadre as she only eats super crispy bacon - so about 90% of it was inedible. I don't like it much myself like that and overall we felt this dish was pretty dang small and not well executed and certainly £7 for 3 or 4 small pancakes, one self service carton of golden syrup (one!!) and badly cooked folded over fatty bacon... hmmm, not the best. Observing people (many of them guests at the hotel itself) having the Full English buffet, it looked good overall and compared to many hotels with £15-£20 cooked breakfast price tags there was much more variety on offer in this buffet style breakfast than is typical and it looked to be going down very well and not least in light of the £9.50 per adult price tag, seems to be to represent a really good value. I'd still go back to the Bar & Block for steak off the main menu but I'd not return for the non-buffet breakfast as I just don't feel it was executed particularly well. But I still like you Bar & Block.

Slightly disappointed by this place. Visited 12 months ago and it was amazing, this time not so much. Place was empty but we were told by the waiter that they were too busy (and how unhappy he was) so if we wanted food we would have to sit at the bar and order food ourselves (which we didn't mind too much) but with the length it took them to serve the drinks we decided to go elsewhere. Shame really as the last time we used them the food was really good.

We came to the restaurant in Nottingham today on its opening night, purely because our regular choice of restaurant was unfortunately closed. I chose the rump steak which was cooked perfectly with triple cooked chips, my dad had a mixed grill, and my brother had mighty block burger. The mixed grill was rather small for the price you pay, and don't include much bang for buck, it was a small steak, pork belly, squished chicken and sausage, with a small apple coleslaw and the tiniest corn on the cob I've personally ever seen. He also had the wrong sauce with his meal which didn't help the situation. There were redeeming points, the burger was good to my knowledge apart from a brioche bun that was 'like toast' and my steak was perfect. Neither of these latter dishes came with any garnish such as a salad or vegetable options, just chips, which were apparently triple cooked but which seemed only single cooked in all honesty, not as crispy as you'd expect. Overall a mediocre visit that wasn't helped by the slow service and long wait for food - we were trying to be in and out in an hour but it took 1h40. May consider visiting again but have been to more exciting and tasty steakhouses.

The location is in the city center so close to everything else. I really liked the fact that it's not crammed, plenty of space between the tables so you don't mistakenly overhear other people's conversations. Definitely go there if you crave a tasty steak! My partner had a chocolate churro sundae in a jar and he got a normal spoon so he had to work for it, but other than that everything they served was delicious.

Me and my partner went here on our last day in Birmingham, when we arrived we got seated and the servers was on fire water and glasses was placed on the table as we sat down. Our order was placed barely a minute after, the food came after about 20mins and the steaks was the best we have ever had which takes over the price for some of the steaks (better you pay the better you get, and that was the case here) we both got a drink (candy floss martini for me and a cider for him) and two 12oz sirloin steaks with chips and potato for me, it came to £52 altogether and we would happily pay that again for the meal we had and cant wait to come back to this lovely establishment

Had the 15min lunch steak and fries with a drink for a tenner. A little pot of popcorn while you wait but didn't eat much of it as the food came really quickly. Thin steak cooked in garlic butter, no side or dressing included but enough for a lunch and nice place to relax out of the hustle and bustle briefly.
