Reviews of Chennai Dosa, Birmingham - Indian Restaurant
R. n.
Firstly highly recommended. I’m food lover and eat medium to spicy food, here the food is less spicy but the taste is really good.
I understand some are frustrated with the waiting time, I have been twice and there was not more than 20mins wait time.
They have more crowd and less staff which makes the service delay and another thing only cash is accepted no cards. If these 2 can be changed it would be a great place.

Being a foodie I always wanted to try a family dosa for a very long time and unfortunately it just didn't happen for years.
What could be more satisfying in doing that on your birthday Eve.
It was like my wet begin to order with mini idli then mushroom 65 then I can happen to see family top of the menu card and hence had to order it
The server was like it is available but wouldn't recommend as you both can't eat it as it's 5ft long but I was like hmm I have been preparing all my years for this so bring it on😜
He recommended removing the other items and have this alone as he felt that we can't finish and would be wasting it but fortunately I manage to complete it.
It was real tasty and definitely worth a try for 15.95£ as it came with sambar, white chutney, orange chutney and masala.
All tasted really good.
The only reason why am giving four star was for the service offered.
No water unless requested for. No cup for water unless requested for.
Service took a while to bring anything that we requested( understandable due to incoming crowd but definitely can be improved).
I couldn't try any other items like bucket biriyani etc etc. Heard it's worth trying though.
So until next time ✌️

I dont understand why people have rated it so less. I had tried masala dosa, chana bhatura nd they have pretty big sized bhatura and dosa with very yummy masala and chutnies. I have tried dosa from other places in London too. This shop also makes very good dosas.
J. N.
Excellent range of South Indian and Kerala Dishes
Parking is a problem as its a crowded area
Delivery to close by areas is available through Deliveroo
Good value for money
Good customer service
Breakfast buffet on weekends and bank holidays
J. N.
Great food and they did good service and especially so good...ghee roast.
E. A.
A very tasty breakfast. Tried Dosa for the first time and it's definitely something I will have again. Their morning buffet is so good and you can have as much food as you want.
S.
Nice place to eat
Great food.
Reasonably priced
A. R.
Was a fantastic experience eating @chennai dosa. We ordered ghee roast, special masala dosa, medhu vadai, filter coffee and mutton varuval. Everything was absolutely tasty except masala in special masala dosa( May be it's just us!!) Authentic taste!
We later ordered chicken biriyani, mysore pak and badusha. These were alright.
Good quality. Friendly service and served in little time.
All over fab experience. Will definitely visit soon and recommend to South Indian food lovers😁👍👍
H. A.
Amazing dosas available here especially SPECIAL Masala Dosa ,very quick service and must try restaurant for Indian food.
S. P.
Quick, efficient, delicious and go the extra mile!
Perfect food everytime, do not skimp on ingredients. Dosa's are my fav..! however everything on the menu is great.. Regular customer and wouldn't go anywhere else for Indian food..!! The staff are friendly as well as their delivery drivers..
A.
Been to this place a few times over the last 3-4 years. The menu is much better with more options now. Really enjoyed the roast dosa, nannaari sarbath this time. Friendly manager and quick service too.
R. H.
Restaurant level of dining served in a casual setting at casual prices.
Not only a good selection of vegetarian dishes, but also a good range of meat and seafood choices. Also sells hot and cold south Indian beverages.
Service very good too. I've been on several occasions. Naturally some dishes I've enjoyed more than others, but some are high on my list of favourite foods I've tried. Eg the whitebait and the thin crispy dosa with mutton and mashed potatoe. Very decent desserts too. Prices are cheap to moderate. Unless you are from Chenai the food isn't your usual every day food.
p. p.
Very authentic South Indian restaurant. Its a simple place. The food tastes like how you eat in Tamilnadu, for sometime I forgot it's UK. Whoever craves for South Indian food, it's a must go place. Cost is affordable. And of course, you can see lot of South Indians here! 🤩
t. 7.
Mostly excellent experience, Great on veg taste, also good meat and seafood too, dal curry is served thick or watery and its anyones guess which one you get.
s. S.
After a long days had a best Dosa in the UK. Pongal with sambar is favorite food and we we're much satisfied the lunch we had especially dhal, rasam was in perfect taste compared befor and payasam too.. felt Very good customer service, helthy food at reasonable prices.
We love to come again and again..

Chennai dosa in Birmingham on the market road is something you cannot miss. Authentic south Indian food which starts with a buffet for breakfast in the morning which doesn't have just dosa in it since they are known for it they haven't included dosa in the buffet but it has other dishes like idly, pongal, sweet ,poori etc. The tea served there is something you should definitely try. Loved the masala tea ! The ambience of the shop is uplifted by multiple folds by the television which plays Tamil songs from the 90's which is a treat all the 90's kids . I was seriously lost in nostalgia hearing all those songs. The only let down for me was the guy in the counter who looked grumpy all the way and never cared to speak in his native language Tamil even after me speaking in Tamil. I hope he learns more about hospitality nd be more friendly towards the customer. There was a girl who also looks after the hotel who was warm and made me comfortable. A definite going you are missing the south Indian taste buds.
S. M.
The food is good. Especially the mutton dum biryani. We have eaten here as well as ordered many time.
However recently the online orders have had issues pretty every single time. I will just describe the latest two, last week I had ordered from Just Eat and instead of one Mutton Dum Biryani, they gave Chicken Dum Biryani. Today I ordered from Uber Eats and one dish Gobi Manchurian was completely missing. Although Just Eat and Uber Eats resolve these issues, its just abysmal service.
U. S.
Best South Indian in Birmingham, tastes good, friendly staff, takeaway only due to the COVID rules.
Hard to find a parking, also the road was very busy.
A. K.
Great as always! The food is fresh and well cooked. We have been here few times now always enjoyed our visit. Staff are very polite and good. On this visit we came to know that they did pan as well and we were very delighted. Parking is tricky but you will find it around.
S. r.
The veg items are good. In the starter they use same type of base masala for all the dishes. So what ever started you ordered it will be same taste.
We tried the Family Dosa it is good big in size but they didn’t have potato masala in the Dosa.
The Desert are good, but don’t try mojito their, it doesn’t have the punch init.
A. V.
Excellent food with good taste and quantity.... Every indian will fell the taste ...what they expected.... satisfied and must be suggested....
A. G.
Food very tasty chicken chettinadu and mutton curry. Masala chai very pricy and very little in the small glass. Place is cash only a bit pricey but very delicious. Portions less generous.
I. S.
I rate this place as somehow it always makes me feel like I am back in India. It tastes pretty authentic, it looks right, plenty of Indians go there and the dosas are big! Oh yes and it's cheap. There's a South Indian buffet breakfast on Sundays if you like idli and stuff like that. I'm more a fan of the dosas which come with a wide range of fillings and different preparation styles. They all come with home made sambar, coconut and other chutneys. Some of the differences are a bit subtle but I suppose they are based on some regional differences or how some people might have prepared things at home.
These things are so tasty I can't believe there isn't some kind of man vs food deal: eat 3 and we'll give you the fourth for free!
S. S.
A little disappointed with my visit this time. The dosa was thin and crispy just as I like it, but what let it down was the masala filling and the sambar. Not enough seasoning and sambar underwhelming in flavour. Staff can do with some training focussing on service too.
Hopefully better next time!
R. A.
Excellent South Indian food and great quality for good prices. Well worth a visit if you are a fan of South Indian flavours and not minding the no fancy service. Staff are friendly and obliging even to weird requests from people who don't understand Dosas!
K. K.
Tasty, real south Indian dishes but prices are high.
I. S.
Dosa are the best in the UK. Very friendly customer service, tasty food at reasonable prices and good family atmosphere.
Paneer masala dosa and omelette dosa are the best.
S. S.
Loved their food: New fav go to place. Upama and idly best❤️
N. B.
Good south Indian food. Definitely try them if you are in the area.
v. s.
Great food as always.. great service too.. really love coming here.. visited for breakfast brunch and had real nice south indian breakfast
M. H.
This is the first time I visited here. Good Indian restauran. Tasty food. Helpful staff
S. G.
Great food!
You should try Pongal and vadas. The ambiance reminds you of India :)
M. T.
Food was good specially Masala dosa and filter coffee
J. K. R.
Tasty food!! Cool place. Thanks for the amazing dosa
J. S.
Food is average.
Staffs are friendly.
They don't accept any kind of card payments.
V. M.
Authentic South Indian food. Service is poor but worth the wait for the yummy food. Weekend buffets are a must - great value for money.
M. D.
Loved the food here!! Best place to have dosa in Birmingham.
A. B.
Good food but very short staffed on several occasions and maintenance of tables and service therefore significantly delayed!
N. J.
We regularly go to this restaurant. There is a step to get into the restaurant if you have a buggy. There are many tables and you usually find one vacant so no queuing required. No cards accepted still only cash payments after a few years now. The cleanliness standards of the place could be better. There is always a South Indian song playing on Telly which creates a good cultural ambience. The South Indian food at this restaurant is pretty good and close to the real thing served in South of India. There is a huge variety of food items including crisp Dosa, fresh Idly, hot Sambhar, pepper corn sprinkled Pongal, etc. and they are all very reasonably priced. No more Banana chips this time. They also sell some authentic Indian cold drinks like Frooty and Thumbsup. Overall you can have a wholesome hearty meal of good portion for the whole family at a reasonable price (Cash only). This time around I saw a lot of Takeaway orders moving from the conventional eat in type restaurant. Definitely worth a try.
v. p.
Nice place for south Indian cuisine. Does both veg and non veg. Helpful and friendly staff. it's cash only if I am not mistaken 🥺
S. S.
They need to improve by costomar services but good foods
P. G.
Both Food and Service were great. Love to visit again when we are in Birmingham. Only downside is finding a parking space nearby the restaurant.
r. k.
I had really good experience, food was so tasty
J.
Anytime we have an Indian craving this is our go to place, lovely reminder of what we used to get from the mother land.
In our latest visit we ordered a simple masala dosa and even though you couldn't eat in (Lockdown) they wrapped all the components together and just made it for me.
Highly recommended if you want Indian vegetarian food.
I wish I'd taken a photo to place with this tree review.
R. g.
I have constantly ordered Mutton biryani from this restaurant, it tastes good but even after specifically mentioning in the note, they make it too spicy. Had also ordered Chicken lollipop which neither looked nor tasted like they should be authentically. Not a single starter from this restaurant is worth it.
g. r.
Very good food, little late on service.
D. M.
Great food and atmosphere. Portions can be a bit small. Cash only.
L. A. J.
Quite reasonably priced and good service. Not the most authentic food I have had, but they make it up in price and service. Wasn't offering the full menu though when I went in early June 2021.
A. K.
food is ok but the waiting time is too long
N. C.
Tried ghee roast and kothu poratta..both was good,
vada is average
S. C.
Tasty Food and nice ambience and polite staff.
M. R. M.
One of the Best places to eat Indian food in Birmingham. Must visit if you are visiting Birmingham Balaji temple in UK.
H. M.
Food was just average. Also they did not have more that half of the menu items available. Disappointed.
S. B.
I used to go there a lot but this is not same quality food anymore. Toilets are dirty.chicken tikka was raw. I wouldnt be going again
D. C.
Don't take credit cards/debit cards.
Need to improve customer service especially st busier times.
V. K.
Today's visit was a bit of a disappointment as one of the potato side dish for puri had gone bad. Since it's only takeaway we couldn't go back to return it. I have visited this place in the past and it's always been okay for the price. Quantity, price is decent. Quality is okay, sometimes a bit oily.
T. D.
Great place for breakfast buffets on a Weekend! Has an authentic vibe when it comes to the food, and friendly staff.
Their masala Dosa is amazing!
r. s.
Too clumpsy and taste is same for all curries
Y. K.
By far the best place to order South Indian food in Birmingham! We have tried almost every South Indian dish on their menu and almost all of those tasted very close to home. Their Dum Biryani is one of the best we had in Birmingham - many other restaurants have spiced fried rice masquerading as Dum Biryani. The best part is that they were open even during most of the lockdown and delivered safely. Some starters could use improvement but they have a pretty big menu with lot of amazing items, so it isn't that big of a deal for me personally.
My recommendations: Paneer dosa, Chole Bhature, Dum Biryani, Kothu Parotta.
s. t.
Authentic Indian taste 👍
J. P.
Excellent food and great value for money. A must try.
A. M.
Food is really good. The only trouble is they take only cash. And nothing has been informed on phone. I wish they could inform customers while taking the order.
V. S. (.
Not the greatest of ambience and restaurant conveniences but the food is moderately priced and good authentic taste in most dishes. Also the fact that it's cash only is irritating. Service can be slow sometimes and you're better off choosing buffet but as I said there are very few authentic tasting South Indian restaurants.
B. W.
Customer service needs to be improved and please serve drinks before the food arrives. There are so many foods that are not available from the menu. Please have items such as tissues available on the table. However, the waiters are friendly and the food are authentic and delicious.
P. S.
Great prices in comparison to other Sri Lankan Restaurants. However portion sizes could be improved. Food itself is nice and fresh and served promptly. Customer service could be improved in terms of taking order quicker rather than making customers wait.
s. s.
Best chutney i had! Nice southindian food.. Taste mini idly
U. P.
Giving this place a three is really generous. Soon as you walk into the shop it smells, it's dirty, floor is super sticky, tables haven't been wiped, food hasn't been wiped off the seats and plates and utensils haven't been washed properly. The toilet facilities are good but again the hygiene level is questionable. Bring your own handwipes
Lets get down to talking food. We ordered a variety of Dosa's. I ordered a Paneer Masala Dosa an i think I didn't get paneer. If it was paneer the quality was shocking. The Dosa seemed bland and the chutney and daal wasn't really enhancing the flavour of the Dosa.
If you don't want to spend much on Dosa this is the place however you won't get the quality you maybe looking for.
I want to make clear me and my family only tried the Dosa. The other types of food might be tasty for that reason my review is solely based on the Dosa
A. G.
One of the best places to have authentic South Indian delicacies!!! Have always enjoyed the food here. Fresh and insanely tasty. But that's just me :) I will always appreciate a good dosa place! Anyhow, definitely worth trying if you have never tasted South Indian dishes.
s. j.
Delivery is far more better than Dine in
T. S. D.
Good place for south Indian food if you have the time. Since one person serves all and also man's the till it is slow no matter how hard he tries. Maybe if they hired a waiter the service will improve. Masala chai is one of the best I have had in Birmingham. My partner had the authentic coffee and she loved it.
W. B.
Nice place friendly staff, clean place and ya most important thing tasty Indian food
m. s.
Nice restaurant authentic south indian foods 😋 all covid measures are followed
Happy to visit again ☺
Recommended is dosa with sambar vada
S. K.
One of the rare places in and around Birmingham to offer decent south indian delicacies. I am a foodie from India and lived in Bangalore for 10 years so my taste standards are quite high so not much impresses me here in UK but this was not bad at all. Try crispy fried idli (my favourite) or any staples like dosa, idli vada, even biryani is not bad.
B. U.
Good for dosa, other foods are okayish
V.
Good South Indian food with good taste and quality. Prices are reasonable. Breakfast and lunch Buffets are the ones not to miss, if you really fancy a typical South Indian one.
R. R.
If you’re here for the food then you should know that it’s a really good place, proper Indian/Sri Lankan food and it’s made fresh to order. Tasted great, me and my friends enjoyed the food and will definitely be returning! Ignore the bad reviews on here please and go try it for yourselves.
C. M.
Great food! Awesome all-you-can-eat breakfasts
K. J.
Good food. Friendly service
S.
It's a good place. Close to me and the prices were good. Didn't like the wait though but heck the food made up for it in the end. Noticed they took a while to clean the table by us. Overall I would go again as long as they continue improving the service.
K. M.
Good for Dosa, had family Dosa here and it's very good, we 4 couldn't finish it
S. W.
Woow, it was amazing, the food was very tasty, we will come again.
R. L.
Authentic south Indian food. Had the buffet breakfast option this morning which all the food was served fresh only small amounts were made consistently to ensure all the food was freshly made. Great value of money!
S. B.
Sunday brunch - very busy, friendly staff, good food, reasonably priced. Great coffee ☕😋
S. C.
Occasionally go for the breakfast buffet as it's very different from anything you can get anywhere else. Traditional Indian. Food is tasty but service is poor and the restaurant itself could do with a scrub!
R. R.
Good authentic south Indian food. We enjoyed our dosa, vada, lassi and kulfi!! Being Saturday we had wait a bit for our order to arrive. All if us didn't get our orders together. But overall, good value for money.
V. W.
had really nice experience. pretty big restaurant. manager was very good and was ready to help.. as we were with 2 families so they opened the closed area for group on left side seating. good food. cheers
R. K.
Good place for meals and snacks. They have the South Indian snacks and dishes. Only drawback is they don't accept card, only cash. Luckily there is a nearby cash machine. Quality has slightly gone down compared to few years ago. But not many other options available here in UK.
S. M.
DELAY in bringing food to the table, quite long delays.
Felt like they needed more staff on board, several customers around us also were unhappy with delays.
Can't complain about the food, it was good.
*No Card Payment, Only Cash*
P. P.
Friendly staff with good customer service. Food is good but not spicy at all if you prefer spicy food. Price for certain food items were a little too much for small portion. Overall was good place if you like indian food. No onsite parking for the restaurant.
P. s.
We go to Chennai dosa for the absolutely delicious breakfast buffet that they serve. For South Indians this is probably the best value for money and tastiest breakfast available in Birmingham. Shame there isn't one in Coventry!!
M. T.
Staff were very helpful and efficient service was excellent
P. G.
The food was so tasty and delicious. The perfect treat in this lockdown as you cannot help but indulge in the flavours and forget about everything else.
It came in good time (40 mins).
T. D.
Liked their Kothu porotta. But their Porotta and Mutton Kuruma was average
S. P. E.
Amazing, authentic south Indian food. Love their weekend buffet in particular. Been here so many times. The service could be better though.
D. V.
I found the followings are the drawback of the restaurant. Food is not upto standard, took long time to get food after taking order, not accept card. However service and behaviour is great.
Hope the management take it as a serious concern to improve the quality.
p. m.
Very tasty south Indian food. Enjoyed it with family. Can't expect ambience for the nominal price of food. Service was a bit slow but that's OK. Please avoid ordering gulab jamun. These are the haldirams tin ones and felt not warmed thoroughly. Overall worth a try. Good food
S. K.
The food was good. It did have the taste. The guys were cool but the service was a little slow.
H. T.
Great South Indian food. Have been doing take away for a while now.
Although, this place does not accept cards and atm withdrawals around charge £1.
Chennai Dosa, I believe it's time to accept cards...
I. A.
Applied for a job and get called back after some days asked to do an unpaid trial. The place was good and the restaurant was pretty good. But after all they haven’t call me and get pissed off. But the food was really good but I have tried only the buffet.
h. s.
Clean place. Friendly staff. Amazing south Indian food at an affordable cost. I will definitely recommend.
A. S.
This is a very good restaurant. have a variety of foods and amazing desert. Highly Recommended! Thoufee served us very well.
H. S.
The food is amazing, I usually order it for delivery and the portion size is perfect but in store the portion size is a bit smaller. However the food is tasty and delicious. Especially Lamb biryani and Gobi Manchurian 🤤
L. X.
Honestly my favourite place to eat on earth! Lovely food that tastes homemade. The portion sizes have decreased but stil tasty & worth it. Simple yet cosy decor. Clean tables. Good customer service. Busy on weekends but only maybe 5-10 min wait. Sambar idli, masala dosa, chilli paneer, masala poppadom, mango lassi & masala chai are all 10/10. The most my husband & I have spent is max 15-16£.
S. A.
Authentic Indian snack. Has variety of dosas. Completely busy which is always a good sign. Just wish they had more different snack foods. We had masala dosa and chilli paneer. I recommend both.
V. C.
Really good Indian food, but the service is really bad. The food took a long time to be served and it's warm not hot. The staff didn't want to serve us properly (ie, not answering calls).
K. R.
Quality has gone down since we last visited a few months ago. Takes longer to place an order or get a bill. Food was okay. Sambhar did not taste like sambhar. Uttampam and dosas were freshly prepared.
A. A.
Taste and price was excellent, authentic south indian! Love the filter coffee..
Cleanliness needs to improved-3star just because of cleanliness, else 4star.
V. R.
We go here very often
Weekends are good for breakfast buffett and buffett lunch. Price is reasonable for Birmingham.
Staff are very friendly and space and ambiance are comfortable. Take away service available through just eat or uber eats. Cleaner toilets.
Tamil TV and songs to enjoy while you eat.
CASH ONLY
O. M.
It's the place to go for Dosa. They serve Veg and Non veg and it's all Halal.
F. U.
It was a wonderful experience at Chennai Dosa, Birmingham. The foods are delicious and the customer service is not at its best yet but its alright. When you are in Birmingham, do visit Chennai Dosa or place your order for home delivery.
P. N.
Lovely food not too expensive... Just right ... Exactly what I expected... I've been twice now, with my wife. Good customer service... When there's a lot of people ... Takes longer to serve food ... Bet hey that's expected x
m. s.
One of the best authentic Tamil dishes... I had a feast after a long time... Btw tell your chef about the level of spice... By default the level of spice might not suitable for everyone...
t. m.
Non Veg meals Buffet one is Amazing one, Tried Rice with Chicken curry, Mutton Curry m Sambar rasam , kootu poriyal, It was an awesome one
And also tried Fish chukka as a side dish,It t was not upto the level, But it was okay
Jil jil Jigarthanda : Please dont try this one, If you area true Jigarthnada lover, As they are giving kind of a milk shake.
J. S.
Enjoyed the food. Friendly staff and clean environment. Best choice for south Indian style food.
K. N.
Really authentic Tamil Naadu food. Taste and quality wise, five stars. Quantity could be bit more than what is supplied. Price OK
T. @. Y. P. T.
Good Dosas and an amazing buffet. Their meat dishes aren't the best. Stick to Vegetarian here as this is what they're best at
J. A.
Absolutely nice taste. If actually feels like you are eating in India. The only problem we had was service. We at least waited for 45 mins in getting our dosa delivered.
I. R.
Food is tasty but expensive for the amount of food you get .
K. M.
Lovely Indian food - cash only
s.
Nice food. Parking off street is free. Need more service staff
M. S.
Great place to visit, great place to eat out with your family ❤️
S. N.
Nice Indian restaurant, tasty and quality food and superb service.
Customer can have traditional and customised dosas, snacks, bajjis etc.
Looks like they have some non vegetarian varieties too
l. s.
the food here is alright, they do a buffet but the food isn't ever topped up they just let it run out till there is nothing but soup left of all the curries.
There was no chicken left in the chicken curry which defeats the point of calling it a chicken curry
i.
Really fantastic welcome. I went to the opening of this new Chennai Dosa and it really took me by surprise, it was so cool inside and the food was really good and lots of choice for me. This is a new Chennai Dosa in the city and good to see it open, recommended.
K. ..
Best place for veg and non veg dosa
h. g.
Tasty curries and Lamb Dum Biryani..yummy and better price too..
A. A.
Food was okay but could've been better if we had some guidance from the staff members on recommendations. I've heard some good reviews of the place however was let down by the lack of engagement from the staff members.
H.
Nice clean place...food was good. Mehsoor was brilliant
N. P.
Food n service (bit slow) was ok. But most annoyingly there's no card payment available n hasn't been for years. Get on with times!
N. R.
Friendly staff...nice atmosphere...wasn't told about the buffet tat they serve for breakfast or lunch...wasn't mentioned...just seen notice on way out...and we ordered food of a menu...will definitely go back
S. K.
Delicious food but the service was really bad. The man on the counter was really unhappy and like he was doing a favour to me when I bought sweets from him. I didn’t like his behaviour.
D. A.
The food, the staff especially Akram and great value for money. The food is served categorically in the right order and both my wife and were served at the same time. This is exceptional improvement. Great job!!👍🏽👍🏽🙏🏼🙏🏼
K. S.
Great vegetarian options, be ready for busy spells, it can get packed. I look for value and taste, you can eat in for a fiver and and be very happy indeed. Not many places still do that.
K. N.
Lunch buffet both veg and non veg options was good. Tiffin was good as well. The fish option goods have been better. Service was below par.
J. H.
