Reviews of Hen & Chickens
M. C.
Great Pub & Curry Restaurant. The food is excellent & the staff are very friendly. The place is clean & the ambience is great. The procedure for ordering the food is different but fast. The food portions are good enough for two to eat from one order. Great beers aswell. An allround good experience. 👍👌😁🍺
M. G.
Great food which explains why they’re always busy. Good idea to call ahead to reserve a table, particularly on the weekend. Mixed grill is great to share. TBH, it used to be so much better, but, guess as the cost of food has increased the grill has suffered slightly.

Food was okay. Not the best destination I've had. But was still decent.. Nice pub. Very clean..
L. T.
Food was incredible!!! Came out quickly, well prices and above all, absolutely delicious. Portion sizes are generous as well. Bar staff were very friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. The pub-vibe makes it very relaxed. The only thing is, if you have a bad back, or are a bigger person, you might wanna ring ahead and book a booth/sofa seat. The tables are very small and close together, so it does very much feel like you are sat with people you don't know. The stools are also quite low (and I am only 5ft) so if you've got a jacket/bag with you, there isn't really anywhere to put it. - I can only speak for the restaurant section of the pub! There is loads of room and proper seating on the other side of you're just going for drinks.
Overall, it was great, and I definitely will be going again and recommending to others!!

Cracking curry house. We asked at the Wolf pub for a recommendation expecting a few...he just pointed over the round at this place. Was reassuringly busy. The ordering system was a tick sheet which we filled in before we sat down. The food was excellent & plenty. We even tried to get in the next night (Sat) but was fully booked.
C. T.
Was staying at Holiday Inn Expres Snow Hill, who's only evening meal was fish and chips!!
Found this gem on Google maps 6mins away.
Was busy, even on a Weds night (good sign!), but was quickly shown to a table. Some great drinks on tap - had a pint of Beavertown neck oil while food was being prepared. Food was excellent (garlic nan and chicken jalfrezi) - good portion, full of taste and right amount of kick. Service was friendly and pub had nice atmosphere.
Highly recommended.

The best curry in Birmingham, in my view. I’ve been twice over the summer with family and really enjoyed the food, as have they. The butter chicken is fantastic as is the saag paneer. Service is very good - quick and friendly. I love the old pub feel at the front and I love the area, so it scores on every count for me. I’ll be going back.
I. B.
The curry was incredible. Hot, tasty and fresh. Decent price too. Naan bread superb...
Knocked a star off as thought drinks were expensive, plus we were sat in the front bit of the pub which was a bit cold. Nicer (and warmer) rooms at the back...
G. S.
Totally lived up to the hype - superb service, fabulous food, generous portions, a huge range of drinks, brilliant atmosphere and great value for money.
Just go!
B. C.
Quaint place, has kept it old features, which add a certain character to the venue. Is a small place and packs out fast so book your table for food.
Only had a snack hear but the food was very nice.
Main point for me was I walked in and saw beavertown on tap.
A. L.
Really nice food, however it’s more a man’s pub for a drink and a curry with the lads than it is a date night. If that does not bother you, I would recommend eating there.
N. D.
One of the best Indian meals I've had. Massive.portions, just.tuw right heat. Fast service. Good range of beers as well
G. B.
Great bar and curry to boot. Was in on a Wednesday night and it was buzzing. Had great service and really polite and friendly staff. Will be back
M. B.
Good staff, beer and food cracking, even had to change the order when the starters arrived, beware!! It's a full on nosebag!
I can eat, glad I about turned TBH... However, had I not been stopping in the hotel up the road, I would, more than likely of taken it home, and the good lady and I, pleasured on the chef's delights tomorrow...
May regret it though, Chicken Pathia, Pilau Rice & Dhal, have to do another day...
Loved it tonight, just like a few years ago.
We'll be back!!
Y. K.
Cozy place with a great bar and attention to detail!
Our visit was on a night before the lockdown. It was easy to find the place, and once we went inside, we saw that it was a small but comfortable, well-lit place.
Ambience: The lighting was nice, and although they serve Indian cuisine, the interiors had a rustic British feel to them.
Seating: The seating may seem cramped to some, but this was before the lockdown, so it didn't seem that problematic to us, especially because everything else worked out well. If the smaller tables are separated out a bit more, it'd have been better though.
Food: We ordered a couple of starters and some main course. All of those were great. The menu is not large or extensive, but it offered everything required for an appetizing and relaxing experience.
Drinks: The bar is big, relative to the overall size of the place. The standard choice of drinks was available, and the bartender had some good suggestions for what goes well with the food they offer.
Service: The staff all appeared to be knowledgeable about the menu, and the orders were served fast enough (the place was crowded so we expected some delay anyway).
Overall it was a great dining experience, complemented by the fact that it's the first restaurant I visited in Birmingham!
A. A.
Buzzing on a Wednesday night, and when our mixed grill appeared easy to see why. Great food, good beers and a fantastic atmosphere.
G. G.
Walked here for lunch and was well rewarded! the place was rather empty which was good for those who wanted some quiet time to themselves. For the food, it was amazing. Please order the garlic naan! I opted for the butter chicken which was generously portioned and flavourful. The rice went well with it and it is recommended too! Beer was a bit pricey but did myself a favour and washed the food down with a pint.
Highly recommended!
A. B.
Great Indian food in a pub setting, staff very friendly and helpful. Good Covid controls in place. Highly recommended but suggest you book a table as it gets busy
C. Y.
Bit squished together some of the seating but great beer and amazing curries, really enjoyed, make sure you book!
S. B.
On the expensive side and the curries aren't very good - closer to curry from a jar than most places I've been to. The mixed grill was good though, and the portions are pretty generous.
c. D.
Since the revamp it has vastly improved. The room at the back has a small bar with 3 TV screens. The atmosphere in here is lively and it is always busy. As with any grill we needed more mint sauce, however we finished a small mixed grill and a lamb curry between 2 people. The large mixed grill are smaller than others ive had, but it is still enough between 3 people.
D. C.
Do you drama, large quantities of Indian food served in the comfort of a bright and stylish pub? Come to the Hen & Chickens. While you’re at it catch the footy and have a natter with your nearest and dearest.
G. C.
Delicious 😋 first time visitor but will definitely be back! We shared the small platter between four and each had a curry with rice and naan, we were stuffed for the rest of the day. Yes it's true what all the good reviews say! Will be back soon!
D. Y.
Absolutely lovely food! Great atmosphere. Even went alcohol free (for once) and it still felt like a proper desi pub experience. Loved it
k. p.
Staff are all so lovely, each one greets you with a smile, the service is second to none, the food is delicious, nice size portions and very well presented. Highly recommend.
A. F.
We went to Hen & Chickens for dinner on a Monday evening.
Located near Jewellery Quarter on Constitution Hill, from the outside it doesn't look inviting, however the food is divine.
We ordered the "small " mixed grill to which we added the fish pakora and a peshwari naan. Food came out 30 minutes later, the waiter informed us about the wait, it worth every minute. It was a lot of food. We couldn't finished it.
Excellent service, everything we ordered was delivered first class.
If you like indian food you will fall in love with this place.
Don't miss it out!
M. W.
A jem of a place tucked away almost hidden in the might of Birmingham but worth finding has kept its old traditional looks and heritage on the outside but opens up to a well refurbished interior with plenty of good atmosphere, the staff are brilliant and nothing is to much trouble. Indian cuisine is amongst the best I have experienced would fully recommend giving it a try.
s. w.
Ok curry nothing to sing and dance about . Paneer korma starter great, cod curry and the chilli paneers not so tastey. Staff great though , can’t do enough for you , great atmosphere although TV,s are a bit distracting . Oh and the naan where great.
D. Z.
The food is fantastic especially the mixed grill. Service is generally good and the beers good as well.
A. T.
Amazing Indian curry, naan and mixed grill! Was a good find for us here at Birmingham! Loved it!
G. U.
Young foodie Nephew was raving about the fish pakora being sensational in this place so i really had no choice but see for myself and give it a go, Nice super friendly staff (when can I move in lol), fish pakora really nice actually, a little light on the chili's for my liking but chilli sauce that came with it easily made up for it, fish was fresh and cooked to perfection, the pakora batter was well seasoned and had a little crunch to it, weekends book a table in advance otherwise you may struggle to get in this place is rammed full in the evening's on weekends, you can always order as take away like we did, i definitely will be going again if I'm in the area
S. N.
Love the food here. It gets very busy so make sure you book.
B. S.
Good beer, great curry and sports on TV. One of the best curry spots in Birmingham.
L. B.
Excellent food, kitchen staff do a great job. Bar staff don’t want to be there.
A. S.
Lovely food great choice of beers always Very busy so make sure you book ..
A.
Probably the best curry house in the UK. You should definitely try the spicy curry if you love spicy food!
G. R.
What can I say? Real legit curry despite appearing like a pub on the outside. One of the best in Birmingham. Cheap and great quality. Nice interior atmosphere. Highly recommened!
E. C.
Great food. Great ales. Also good to watch the football. A good place to visit.
J. H.
Decent chicken wings, enjoyed a lot accompanied by a pint and selection of dips, chilli dip was a banger.
J. W.
Unbelievably good food and ace selection of ales and beers. Highly recommended
P. H.
Food is incredible, service was great and they have a good selection of beers
t.
Wow wow wow wow wow. If you like Indian Cuisine, good pubs and an awesome atmosphere, this place has it all. Try the fish poji starter, I'm not a fan of fish, but it was incredible!
The food is A+++ and they have real ales! I will eat here again when I'm in town for sure.
L. D.
God DAMN this place makes a great curry!! worth the hype
F. C.
The food was excellent and plenty!! We’ll back soon.
D. K. (.
Great food Great experience would absolutely recommend
B. M.
This one easy to answer my favourite curry house by far great food very good portions really nice staff.
J. T.
Very authentic and flavoursome Indian food. Will definitely be back!
L. C. R.
Such a great curry, probably the best in Birmingham and in the UK! Every single dish I have tried is amazing! They have a really good selection of beers and price is really good for the quantity and quality you get! Don't miss it!
I. S.
Arguably one of the best tandoori mixed grills in Brum..
R. H.
Amazing food, nice beer and lovely staff.
C. H.
Fantastic food! You get alot for your money, lovley staff and atmosphere, will definitely be going back
C. L.
Amazing food, incredibly generous portions. Service was okay but had to ask a few times for the same things
R. S.
I'd ordered the large mix grill, masala chips and chilli/cheese naan. I really enjoyed the naan and chicken, full of flavour but the fish was chewy, the chips and kebab was ok. Others in my group who had ordered the same had a the same sort of problems but with the other items ordered. They were very busy, I'm assuming this is why our orders were inconsistent.
L. W.
Great place for curry with lads!! Their famous mix grill is a masterpiece!! Booking early is advised as it gets very busy on the evening😊
After years and lockdowns, nothing has changed here. Food is still amazing!!
B. P.
Cannot beat this place for authentic Indian food - tastes like home and you can definitely tell it’s all cooked fresh! Love the ambiance in the place, staff are great and super polite and the guy at the bar recognised me from my last visit over 2 years ago - that was a nice touch.
M. D.
Good food and beer although a little expensive but as Indian mixed grills go, it's well up there, well worth a visit.
M. B.
Food delicious (although a bit pricey for a casual curry pub). Polite and friendly staff. Highly recommended - especially the Mixed Grill.
L. M.
For the price it was okay. Food tasted nice enough but doesn't beat the Sportman in West Brom for flavour or the Fiery Grill and Curry in Wolverhampton.
D. T.
Brilliant experience, encourage people to go there as it is not in an area of the city in which it is easy to find, but the food and service is amazing and definitely worth seeking out.
A. B.
Lovely dinner, food amazing service too
M. P. G.
Went here on two recommendations that I had reserved in my head for a long time. I had two out of town guests and we all said it’s possibly the best Indian food we have ever had. (for me absolutely) lovely staff, felt very safe, and SUPERB food. N.B I never leave reviews, but sometimes some places deserve great reviews especially in the current climate! Kudos 🙏🏼
R. S.
Not cheap but fantastic food.
Worth every penny
M. S.
Amazing food, friendly staff. Perfect place for a get together with friends. All social distancing guidelines are followed, they check your temperature when you enter and you chan sanitize your hands. I really enjoyed the visit and the food. They have good veggie menu.
S. G.
Brilliant pub amazing Curry's on offer
B. S.
Mixed Grill ok..currys not so good..
M. W.
Always come here with the work crew for food and every meal I have had is always delicious. Really friendly and polite staff too.
A. O.
Top food and beer, midweek treat meeting up with friends.
G. N.
Really nice place to hang out for food and drink.
T. H.
The food is amazing - especially the mixed grill! Don't be put off by the look of the place, it'll exceed your expectations.
A. H.
This place has the best food i habe had in a long time the mixed grill is amazing !
J. L.
The best desi-pub I have been too. We love a work lunch here.
H. S.
I have been coming here for a few years in large groups from work and the food is consistently good and fresh. Highly advisable to book though
s. y.
Absolutely amazing place. The food is the best I've ever tasted. Staff were brilliant with the whole social distancing malarky. I would definitely recommend people to eat here. I will be going back again for sure !!
T. F.
Brilliant place & pub & Indian food
A. M.
Only visited for a beer but a well stocked bar, good prices, nice environment (good for the footy) and what looked like great food being served on the adjacent table, will definitely be back!
T. H.
Basic, a big rowdy on a Saturday night, food ok. Not a date place for sure !
J. F.
Nice deceptively small pub (there's more seating round the back).
Bar staff, not warm or friendly, the restaurant staff really friendly and welcoming.
Drinks extortionately priced. Food pricey but good portions and delicious, so well worth the cost.
Great decor and surroundings. A nice little treasure amongst the standard bars in the area.
A. H.
Brilliant food! We also had wonderful service from our waiter Liam who was such a laugh and really knowledgeable about the menu and the drinks. Made us feel really at home, will definitely be coming back.
s. r.
Popped in for a quick dinner. We had chicken dhansak, chili paneer, masala chips and garlic nan. The food was very nice. The place as the usual COVID 19 restrictions, orders are via table service and payment is contactless.
A. K.
Fabulous mixed grill, great beer, what more could you want?
W. F.
We ordered nearly all the vegetarian meals and they were extraordinarily good. Pre-booked (Covid-19 requirement) and had a very pleasant drink at The Wolf across the road beforehand, waiting for our table.
Very recommended, for all tastes (the meat options looked very extensive). A happy place.
L. H.
one of the best curry houses in Brum! If you not been book in now
D. E.
I visit the Hen & Chickens quite often on a Friday lunch time with colleagues. There is often 10+ of us (we always book in advance) and they are very accommodating and the service is always very fast. The food is also very good and we never have any complaints. The food prices are reasonable (especially considering the portion sizes) and the drink are cheap compared to other places nearby. We will continue to visit here in the future and I recommend you do the same.
A. S.
Ate here last night. Great curry, in fact one of the best I've had. Best to book ahead as (apparently) it gets busy. This is a pub, not your usual Indian restaurant so expect pub environment. Service quick if a tiny but surly, portions generous, prices OK.
M. K.
Visited as part of my managers leaving do. The staff were friendly and guided us round to where the tables were reserved. Drinks were very reasonably priced as the glasses were quite large. Knocked a star off 5 as the food looked amazing but did not try it as it was Valentine's Day I was going out to eat. There was no designated parking but managed to park literally maybe 10 metres (if that) away but it was not that well lit. Will definitely go to the Hen and Chickens again ... and actually eat !
S. C.
Great food, and good value for money. Highly recommended. Well worth a visit.
D. H.
Very nice food. Very big naans too compared to the likes of Soho tavern on park road. Very nice staff also.
P. L.
For some reason the last few times I've had curry I haven't really enjoyed it, so when a colleague took me here I felt a little hesitant. From the outside it looks like an old pub located on a street corner, but once inside you realise it serves craft ale and Indian food, and it's incredibly busy - you really need to book! Order at the bar and when the food arrives it looks amazing, and this was the first curry I've had in ages that I've thoroughly enjoyed. I ate every bit, and the prices were great too. A fantastic little place, and definitely worth a visit if you're in Birmingham.
S. W.
Absolutely delicious and great looking pub
P. T.
The best and perfect Indian food. Ever. Period.
W. H.
The beer was good, and there was a decent selection. The food was excellent. I had the mixed grill, as did a few of my compatriots. Tasted great, plenty of it, but be aware - that's a lot of food. With sides, it would easily feed two. I'll be back.
l. L.
Good place next to st Paul's square. Food is really Nice. Chili nan, butter chicken, they got everything...If you love Indian food you should try it. Can be a bit noisy after work hours because it's also a bar but when rush is over it's good. There are others more quiet rooms at the back. Nice Indian pub.
c. k.
Lovely Indian Pub/restaurant, the food and service was excellent. Would recommend to all...
V.
Great place for Indian food and / or mixed grill. Cheap beers, fast friendly service and those mixed grills.... Award winning! Meat oh so tender and comes out on a sizzling skillet! Chips are pretty decent too. Brilliant - definitely recommended! 10 / 10.
J. N.
Buzzing atmosphere, amazing service and delicious food! Faultless. If you want a curry with flavour and taste - come here. If you want a drink, TV and some nibbles to wind down with - come here. If you're wanting to escape the dulls of Birmingham on a cold wet night - come here! (And have a drink or some food.. you won't regret it!)
D. S.
Very nice pub with great food. Mixed grill is brilliant
J. B.
Lovely little spot for a tasty mixed grill. Quick service too!
i. m.
Went for Lunch on Saturday; what more could you want, great food, beer and sport. The pub, retains its integrity after a tasteful refurb. The food is a must - mixed grills are superb and reasonably priced. Plus a decent selection of beers. Will be back.
g.
Great food. Went there last Saturday for a birthday drink and didn't anticipate 7 of my mates joining me. The owner was great as he let us have a reserved table up until 8pm. Gave us an hour and a half of drinking and eating. Excellent beer, good selection of spirits. Food was very good, the cod tikka was unreal, juicy and flavoursome. It gets very busy so I recommend booking a table. The only issue was the barman was a little irrate when we wanted to move to a bigger table but the owner sorted it. Overall- great experience and I enjoyed my birthday.
S. U.
This was better than the usual sizzler and beer pub although it still had the sports bar theme. Food was fresh, tasty and not overspiced or overpriced. Staff were polite and friendly with an efficient service, so I would recommend it. However not a five star from me as is typical with these places that they still have a look of yesteryear pubs and lack that bit of sophistication which I feel would improve the atmosphere and be more inviting.
K. S.
Went to the Hen and Chickens last night and had a great lamb jalfrazi. My two friends had curries as well and thoroughly enjoyed them. It's a no frills pub that sells good food at reasonable prices. If you want good food, with friendly staff, without the feeling you are being overcharged for just average food, then this is the place for you. They sell other food as well as curries and I would recommend this establishment but it is best to check when they stop serving food.
A. I.
Great place for a curry in Birmingham. Rustic old pub serves a few ales as well as your normal drinks. If you are planning a visit you must book as it is a very popular venue even in the week. If you're feeling hungry try the mixed grill.
J. K.
Best curry ever never disappoints..!
I. P.
Only had a drink but the food looked and smelled amazing will definitely go back for food
r. e.
First visit since the refurbishment after being a regular visitor in the early days. Still really excellent food, freindly service and good beer but with really nice decor, too. Very well managed Covid processes. I booked my table twenty minutes before our visit on a Wednesday night. No problem at all.
L. M.
The food was incredible! The portion sizes are just right and the flavour are outstanding. It’s small, so it gets busy. Not many staff members so the service is kind of slow, but the food is worth the wait. We had a range of the food, and don’t have a bad word to say...the butter chicken was the best I’ve ever had, and the mixed grill was massive! Highly recommend the food. (Star lost was for service, not food.)
J. B.
We made our second visit to the Hen and Chickens in as many weeks yesterday. An absolutely superb pub serving top notch cask and curries. The staff are helpful and hospitable, whilst the atmosphere is convivial. The cuisine ranks amongst the best I've tasted anywhere, including trips to India, and is inexpensive and plentiful. Highly recommended.
J. 1.
Great food and well priced, ideal to meet after work and have a pint and a catch up
C.
We ordered from Hen and Chickens via Deliveroo and were very impressed with the butter chicken and chicken korma - very creamy and full of flavour! We couldn't really taste the garlic on the naan bread but nevertheless, they went very well with the curries. We will definitely visit when the restaurant re-opens for sit-ins.
G. D.
Rhe mixed grill was out of this world very tasty the lamb chops were big and seasoned well the chicken was so tender the taste was wonderful to much to eat at the table
F. C.
We have never had a bad meal from Hen & Chickens and we order from here regularly. The food is always hot, delicious and great quality. A firm favourite!
H. L.
good quality food worth a visit
B. N.
The food was excellent and the staff were welcoming all in all a fantastic lunch
P. M.
Food was a bit disappointing. Better pubs out there.
M. N.
Great place if you love a good curry (the Madras was hot enough!). Has a pub vibe, showing live sports in both the front and back. Staff were really polite and the service was very good. Table reservations are probably necessary in busy periods.
M.
Husband and I went out for food and drinks. Curries were beautifully spiced, perfect rice, excellent sides. Good pint and cocktail, Warm pub atmosphere with friendly staff. We have since ordered takeaway from here and plan to return to eat in soon.
K. S.
Amazing food every time. 10/10 service. For amazing indian cuisine and a pint this is the place to go
S. S.
Never been before but had a excellent curry. Will definitely go back.
S. W.
Despite my initial thoughts, I actually really enjoyed it here. The outside looks like a dodgy 'locals pub' full of sky sports. But in reality it was packed with the trendy crowd, families, people on a night out, people out for meals and the place was well partitioned so that everyone had what they wanted without being disturbed. The food was actually very good, we all had curries but I could see people having huge mixed grills and other dishes which all looked good. The prices were very cheap too for the quality and volume of food. We were there at 8 on a Saturday night so the place was heaving so I would definitely recommend booking. When we left at around 10 it had quietened down but most seats were still taken.
M. Y.
Excellent food and good value although it is very much a pub experience and not a restaurant. Only thing I don't like is the massive screens, especially in the 'dining area'. Some decent music would be much better for ambience than TV adverts.
E. D.
Brilliant place to eat. Best Indian food. Great pub and wonderful atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and efficient. Recommend always.
A. A.
Amazing mixed grills!
Me and my sister were craving some indian food, we moved to Birmingham last month from London, and from reading so many reveiws this place looked the best to try. The food was delivered on time, the mixed grill was so delicious! We also had butter chicken and fish pakoreh - we are ordering again next week for a few more of us, we dont mind paying when the food is this good - Cannot wait to go eat-in once lockdown is over!
B. W.
Very delicious, good food and good timely service with reasonable prices. The barman knew the menu well and was very helpful in assisting me with finding a dish I would enjoy. The tables for two were a little cramped in the middle of a couple of other tables, however I appreciate they've tried to accommodate as many tables as possible in the space provided. Would recommend reserving on a Friday night.
H. S.
A great mix grill, tasty food! Really worth a visit!
T. D.
A real gem of a place! I visited for the first time last week and had a great time there. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We had booked a table as we knew how popular this place is. I like the fact you sit in a separate area of the pub for eating. The food didn't disappoint either. Very very tasty and generous portions.
Will be looking to make another visit very soon.
A. C.
First time I've been in since the revamp. Sky sports, food prices haven't gone up. Food is as good as ever. Still the best curry I've ever had and I eat a LOT of curry. Highly recommended.
r. s.
Nice pub but there are better value for money Desi pubs around. Food is tasty but small portions and menu options is not as big as other Desi pubs. Slightly more expensive and small portions compared to others. But this is the edge of the city centre so maybe their overheads are bigger than others.
I. A.
A real delight to have an Indian style grill house which isn't far from the city centre. The building has undergone an entire refurbishment which has totally transformed the feel of the bar and the restaurant. Friendly staff, well cooked food and most importantly for me, good beer! I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't fancy a run of the mill curry. Grab some friends, a large mixed grill, a couple of naan's and some rice, and prepare to get stuffed on some great value cuisine.
M. C.
Working in Birmingham at the moment and staying nearby. Chanced on this place last year and headed back when I was in the area again. A really decent pub with good beer and a nice atmosphere but as a bonus they serve a great curry - best Madras and Jalfrezi I've ever had. Not super hot just bloody good. Good place, nice folk, good beer and great food what's not to like?
S. W.
Found this one 6 weeks ago and for me it is perfect. Authentic Indian food, well kept real ales and a pool table. Superb customer service and consistent delivery, just planning my 4th visit. If you like silk curtains and hot towels move on and don't take the tables away from the rest of us! A great business model for so many of our failing English pubs :)
A. T.
Great place to eat a mix grill in city centre. Nice place and great service.
M. W.
Great food, good drink selection. Fair prices. All good.
M. R.
Best curry in Brum ..Book early
M. M. E.
All I I can say about this place is wow! Amazing food will be going back.
J. R.
As you go in it may look like just another local, but don't be fooled, they pride themselves on their food. As they should! It is very very good. Comparable to some of the best Indian food I've had in the West Midlands. Not only is it great value, but the customer service is great.
d. k.
Really nicely refurbished restaurant with OK food.
Great drinks selection if a little on the pricey side given location.
Food is OK, not great...typical Balti house/Indian pub grill fare.
Venue is comfortable and restaurant area is cosy with bench and individual seating.
Too many big screen TV's for a proper restaurant, too many tables to be a sports bar.
A. M.
One of the best Desi pubs - not just in Birmingham, but anywhere! The food is reasonably priced and the copper themed interior brings a very cool vibe.
We are regulars and go for the fish pakora, butter chicken, paneer makhani with the occasional mixed grill thrown in too! Service is quick and portions are generous.
There is a bar area in the front and more of a casual restaurant area in the back. If you prefer the restaurant environment it is worth booking as it does get busy.
A little way out of the city centre, but more than worth the effort. If you like curry and you like pubs, don’t go anywhere else.
They also deliver.
S. W.
It's a classic pub that serves lovely Indian food. It does get very busy as its a bar that shows the football. There is a restaurant area in the back which is quiter.
D. P.
Food was quick and beautiful. Beer was a little overpriced but food more than made it for it. If you want an Indian then i definitely recommend this place.
S. C.
Great food at a great price.
B. F.
A fantastic desi pub with some of the best Indian food in town. The mixed grill is fantastic, all food is fresh and cooked to order. There is a great selection of vege dishes too, the sweet and crispy paneer! The pub had been serving dishes for sometime but underwent a major makeover in 2017 and the quality of the food and service has remained top notch. They have very friendly and helpful staff and there is usually good banter between customers (it’s a popular place to watch football and cricket). Make sure you book in advance!
E. K.
Fantastic not so little (love the revamp) pub in the heart of my favourite place to live, work, rest and eat.
You should be soooo proud of what you've built up from a (dingy little back street boozer) to a fab place i choose to go to (at least once a week in or take out ) to eat.
Well done guys huge pat on the back, i hope my eatery is as successful in time to come, Kennedy
J. H.
First timer (visiting with repeat customers) for my mother's 60th. Food was absolutely stunning and had a fine selection of drinks especially gin for me! Staff are all very welcoming and helpful
E.
Love the food , polite enough staff and very clean.
M. D.
Brilliant food in a nice cozy pub. Great large mixed grill - we were 3 hungry people and struggled to finish it.... lovely flavours and spices! Loved it! Will be back soon!!
M. R.
Old pub style and atmosphere. But worth going for the food. Curries are chilli hot so be mindful.
a. c.
Looks like a place you could easily walk past but go inside and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Good beer and the food is very good and very reasonably priced. We went into the back rooms. Very nice, busy and three tv's showing sky if the conversation isn't up to much.
A.
Hefty traditional Desi meal in a real traditional Brummie pub atmosphere, with Pakistan one-day match adding nice contemporary touch.
Surprisingly quiet at a mid-week lunchtime, but begining to fill by time I went.
Nice to find a range of Indian fish dishes.
Veggies and non-alchoholics catered for.
C. S.
couldn't fault the food. However not enough choice of food in my opinion. Beer wasn't the best, maybe had a bad batch, however good atmosphere, televisions go well with the setting, staff appeared friendly and helpful, id eat here again!
A. B. C.
One of the best curry I have ever had! This one and Thali in Bristol (if you ever go to Bristol - Thali is a must). Really tasty, big portions and really nice atmosphere. Good service too. Price: affordable.
S. T.
Awesome food!!
What more can I say.
I went with group of people and we ordered a lot of food to try and it was all good bar one item, the bhuna which didn't seem to have a flavour that was a tad disappointing.
J. C.
This place does the best curry in Birmingham. A really great pub with pool table and really friendly staff. good selection of beer and the food is really well priced and very tasty. In my top five place to eat out in Birmingham.
s. T.
Fantastic food. On the advice of the owner we had 2 mixed grill starters between 6 of us. He advised us not to order our main courses until we finished our starters. Now thats what I call customer service. Lovely people. Going back for more. Simeon
S. B.
Nice food but you feel like you are sat on top of each other. Tables for 2 are far too small and you literally knock elbows with the person next to you. Such a shame completely spoils the visit especially when the foods great. Wont go back
P. C.
Wow wow wow!!!!! Always our favourite place to go when we come to Birmingham and this time what a make over!!! The place looks amazing!!! Whilst still keeping the friendly welcoming atmosphere. The food as always is out of this world!!!
l. s.
I've been coming to this place for years now, the staff are really friendly and the food is delightful. The mixed Grill, fish pakora and fish curry come highly recommended. Don't allow the fact it's an old pub put you off
H.
Food is amazing! By far one of the best curries I've had in a long time. I had the chicken balti, rice, naan bread and received great service ! Thank you
J. M.
As always amazing food, the pub has been done up it looks brilliant. Slightly more expensive than previous visits, but still great value for money!! Try it you wont regret it!!
D. E.
Fantastic food at a good price
K. p.
I love this place ...the food and beer is great ..very friendly staff and their doing the track and trace and checked are temperatures as we walked ..this was the first and only time I had are temperatures checked as I walk in to the pub...felt very safe in their...would I recommend hen and chicken ? Yes I would great place ..keep up the good work
G. Y.
Ok you must reserve a table, I was lucky and they managed to fit me in. Good beers and curries tasted really good and not oily. I had a chicken dhansak and was excellent.
s. s.
food is excellent fresh and cooked with skill and passion. North Indian cooking at its best big portions fresh ingredients and perfect seasoning. served in a typical brummie pub bright lights big screen telly and a bit noisy. look behind the bar and the have bottled ales and good Dortmund pils this not your average boozer. take it for what it is and enjoy a feast fit for a hungry traveller. thanks
M. B.
Literally can't go wrong here... Food is amazing, staff are very friendly.
Been about 8 times, never fails.
It's actually very cheap for city centre,
D. K.
Food and service are top dollar. Since the refurb the pub is one of the best in the area or in my opinion in Birmingham. Every thing is clean and spotless and it shows with a little bit of TIC how an old pub can become a welcoming place to come too. Be back again very soon. You should see for your self and believe me you will agreed. Bon appatite.
A. B.
Might look a bit old from the outside but the food is good..It's a little gem. The curry is cook to order and the mixed grill is the best very big to share..Great price and well worth a visit.. Kids are welcome to sit and eat but its a little pub with not alot.. Take aways are there too so if you dont want to sit just order over phone or go in and order and wait!
K. M.
Brilliant night which was completely unexpected. Really good food , good portions, great staff and not expensive. Couldn't ask for any more. Definitely going back next time I'm here but will book.
H. P.
Amazing food. Big portions. Kind and carrying staff. Highly recommend.
R. V.
Food was really tasty, but we had to wait almost an hour for it to come. Not really a restaurant vibe or atmosphere, more a sports pub with pool table, but the food I was nice when it came. Apparently they are undergoing renovations so hopefully this will solve the issues once it's complete.
N. J.
A tradditional pub witg great food and very friendly attentive staff. The food arrived very quickly and was sizzling hot. Highly recommend the large mix grill which is enough for 2 people.
C. D. L. H. P.
Awesome food. We told the waiter we had no idea about Indian food and he made for us a special menu taking into account our personal preferences. Excellent for vegetarians also.
S. W.
Great food,. recently reopened having refurbished, and more room for clients to eat that delicious food, was always hard to get a table as the food is very fresh and we'll cooked, it always best to ring and book especially at the weekend as they are still Very busy
S. E.
Great venue for a beer and curry. The mixed grill to share was ace. The Madras super hot and service great. Will definitely come back!
H. H.
Great food and the main room at the back is nicely decorated.
M. E.
Wow what a hidden gem. Best place in the city for a curry n a pint. Loved the atmosphere. Food amazing. You will be very pleasantly surprised. Give it a go
G. C.
I've lived over the rd from the Hen & Chickens for a few years now and tonight I tried their food for the first time.
Was a slight wait so I suggest getting a drink, which I would have if I wasn't sat alone.
I would enjoy a date night in H&C if there was music, but for now I'll continue to review my meal.
I'm glad I live over the rd, let's put it that way =)
The roti is dreamy. Buttery and slightly doughy, perfect and authentic.
I appreciate the cut of them and the amount.
My chicken balti has been seasoned exactly right without too much coriander. The lady who served me was very nice and polite towards me. As soon as the wait time had elapsed she promptly made me aware of how much longer. Despite no music playing, there is a relaxing atmosphere in H&C. Thank you guys =)

OK... So... This is regular corner Indian pub. But... Food! This is easily best Indian food in bham and I'm talking from the centre of balti triangle. If u can't book a table (is tiny so better have reservation) just order for delivery. Well worth it! Every dish can be made as spicy as u like... And when I say spicy I mean spicy so be careful u get what u ask for.
d. n.
Me and my mum visited this place by accident, while on our winter trip in Budapest. It is very simple oriented - roaszed chicken is a must. I aldo tried a goulash soup served witj bread. Their house red was good as well. Staff was alright, but they seemed to be a bit bored by their work even the poace is not very crowdy probably. I would reccomend to add more stuff on menu though.
F. D.
The foods are realy nice. I have tried different dishes and I like the sea food platter the most.
They have a fast delivery as well. I highly recommend.
S. S.
Believe all the hype, this is by far the best food in Birmingham by a country mile. The dingy pub on the outside shouldn't put you off because once you enter, you are transported to a whole new world (like Narnia if Narnia did the world's best mixed grills). With recent renovations the decor has become more inviting and friendly, this is a place you could eat with friends, a loved one or your bunch of lads when the footy is on! Get the fish pakoreh and get a large mixed grill. Enjoy.
H. P.
Great, old Victorian pub on edge of Jewellery Quarter. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Food is delicious. Can't beat a curry and a cask ale. Top stuff 👌
S. “. F.
Cracking place to eat and totally loved the food and drink with my family ... Certainly visit again when down visiting family ... Cheers.... ps u keep checking folks temps etc I a mental health officer and I believe safety 1st .... well done
D. F.
Great food and reasonable prices , really accommodating for a last minute table of 18 (as long as we write down our own drinks /food)
Service was good - only criticism is to add more chicken into the curry!
B. P.
Fabulous food and proper real ale good service and a lovely traditional pub with a warm feeling worth a visit but the portions are very big so make sure you are very hungry before you go !
R. C.
Really great Indian food in a pub style setting. A real favourite for lunch. Consistently good. Unbelievable mixed grills!
X. E.
Really clean, nice, food was good except chips. They seems a bit stale. On the pricer side for Birmingham but great choice if you want informal lunch or dinner.
M. S.
Love this place! Always go and get great service and great food. Lots of choice of food and drinks too. Never disappoints!
C. S.
Lovely, friendly, cosy gastropub with good selection of drinks and tasty curries. Food came quickly and staff were very patient with our (reasonably well-behaved) stag group - thanks all!
D. W.
Delicious food and great service 👍
N. A.
Amazing food and friendly staff
S. H.
When you first wall into this pub you want to instantly turn back around and keep walking. When you get over this and decide you are willing to "slum" it, you are going to have an astounding meal.... The Indian mixed grill is out of this world.
j.
Nice and up market feel inside which was surprising considering its location. We had large mix grill and various balti and nans etc. Balti was loverally and fresh however think it could of done with some more spice to make it hotter. Chips and nans was great and so was the ice cold cobra.mix grill was ok no the best fish on top tasted old and dry and some of the chicken was a bit dry. All in all would defientally go again, nice to keep trying new dessi fav at the moment is still the grove and soho tavern.
A. S. J.
Could not wait to go back after lock down and it was as fantastic as ever. Great food, staff, why go any where else. Be back soon and thank you
H. W.
Hidden gem! Very welcoming and the best service - 100% recommend. Make sure to ring up to book as it gets very busy, popular place!
D. P.
1st time experience. Food was great and staff very friendly. Great service. Great food. Will definitely go back next time I am in the area.
C. S.
Great Desi pub, amazing food. Book in advance if possible. Mixed grill is amazing. Helpful staff. Choice of ales.
J. B.
The mixed grill was mind blowing good. It's a cool pub too. This was the most enjoyable dinner I had while in the UK. I'll be back the next time I'm in Birmingham.
V. C.
Excellent banging Mixed Grill. Would definitely recommend and nice comfy atmosphere inside. Good value food and drink
A. C.
Food is amazing, staff are great, great value for money. Bar man in back room (think his name is Ed) proper looked after us.
A. S.
Great food but the place is really small and it's a workers pub really. Great for a mix grill with the lads but wouldn't take my girlfriend. Toilets are horrible.
D. H.
Great garlic nan, disappointed with my tika masala though. Partners meal was also not what we would normally be given for a chicken pathia ( very sweet). Great surroundings , pub has been done out well
M. L.
Delicious curry and interesting drink selection. Unusual gins and fever tree mixers, served in a proper big g&t goblet. A complete list of gins with descriptions and recommendations for mixers would be helpful.
L. O.
Not bad, I just prefer keg and grill. Toilets stink though and could do with at least a clean and air freshener. But think they spent all the money on the new pool table instead
M. D.
Lovely old style pub, fused with contemporary Indian cuisine and the food is top notch, gets very busy though, might be a good idea to book
R. R.
Great staff lovely food and good selection of drinks
M. J.
This place is excellent! Service, drinks and food amazing and would 100% recommend. The most wonderful food with really friendly service.
A. Q.
I loved this place food was top class.Their mixed grill is a must-have. Very friendly staff and prices were great. Will definitely be going back
M. L.
Excellent curry, massive portions. All curries including the small mixed grill could easily feed two people.
B. D.
Really nice food. Good value for money Hottest madras I've ever eaten mind. More like a vindaloo .Nice friendly atmosphere.
C. G.
Wonderful experience. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Chris.
S. B.
The Hen and Chickens is one of Birmingham's best kept secrets.Great drinks on offer and a good selection of wines and ales. However,it is the food that is the star here because it is no ordinary pub grub fayre.A favourite for anyone who likes a curry and a pint, the prices are reasonable too.I would definitely recommend the mixed grill with its assortment of various meats and fish. The bar staff and servers are very welcoming and there is also a sports screen in every room. There are two main bars and eating areas as well as a private area. The food has been highly rated over the years and this is reflected in its ranking as one of the best places to eat food in Birmingham.I eat there regularly and highly endorse this special place .
j. m.
Lovely curry and a pint, defo worth a visit. Lovely day session pub
N. W.
Amazing quality food. We go every Friday and never had a bad experience.
Awesome food at a great price.
J. S. M.
Very good food, having Indian curry as specialty. A lovely cosy pub in the jewelry quarter. Good for casual food or drinks.
A. P.
Amazing place for a curry and beer. Staff are amazing and the food isnt 3663 reheated trash it propper take away curry but for a reasonable price and all in a great atmosphere.
P. R.
Great food well worth the short walk out of the city centre
G. L.
You simply must come here! not upto much on the outside but wow... The food is absolutely gorgeous. Just pop in for a pint and grab a stunning take away.
b. k.
This is a must, never have I had food that tasted this amazing .
K. M.
Food was fantastic! Lost 1 star due to me and my friends having to calculate our own bills before paying, e.g. If had a curry, a drink, and some rice, I would have to add up the total myself which I thought they could have done.
J. P.
Nicely done up - food was ok - not great as I had been lead to believe. Better Desi pubs around. But good enough if you're passing and hungry
C. E.
First time I have been here, never been in a place that serves a curry with beer like it !!
S. M.
Best mixed grill and curry by far
P. R.
Boston curry. As a Brum ex pat it was heaven to have a proper curry again. Good prices. Casual dining in an ex/still a pub.
D. S.
Really nice food, had a sharing plater and a great beer to go with it. Friendly staff who where more than willing to help
S. D. S.
Nice drinks selection, to be a pub food was excellent. Also a very nice environment, well lit and very helpful staff.
J. D.
The food was mostly good, however, the chicken wasn't cooked and after we complained it was taken off the bill. The tables are a bit cramped got space but everything else was good.
P. H.
Great old school pub but with a twist of a great choice of drinks but best of all quality Indian food. Will be back on our return to the city
S. H.
Always good food and general good atmosphere. Gets very busy so would advise to book a table beforehand.
Y. M.
Definitely the best and most affordable curry in town. Recommended to book a table on thursday-saturdays, as they are quite popular and therefore busy.
S. B.
If you manage to look past the exterior of this place you'll be rewarded with a fantastic Indian meal, just be warmed that the mixed grill starter (a favourite of mine and my girlfriend) is huge and delicious so you'll struggle to fit in a main!
N. P.
Recently refurbished. Much smarter than it used to be. They have a couple of Indian lager type beers. Hopefully the food is as good as it used to be.
P. H.
Been coming here for a couple of years now. best curry house/bar around.. BMT best quality...✌ Mixed Grill = Maximum gains..
G. M.
Good food, grill was very good, not the best atmosphere however due to the location and needs a good renovation as it's a dingy pub with a pool table, the food here is great but needs to do more to attract/keep people coming, some people in here look like they are up for a fight, can be a little intimidating.
M. K.
Great grill and curry. Came here for lunch and it was delicious, recommend it if you love Indian grills!
P. H.
All your favourite Indian dishes and drinks to go with it. Definitely worth a trip to if you're in the area
m. a.
Nice food
J. H.
Friendly staff, good food and big portions
S. J.
Great Indian food, well presented, good service and reasonable prices. Highly recommended
D. P.
A bit of small place and feels like you are rushed as tables are already reserved and told to vacate by a certain time. Other than food was good.
B. G.
Absoluteley amazing.....top nosh Indian food, great prices and excellent customer service. Well worth a visit !!
S. C.
Great experience and fantastic value
R. G.
