Reviews of The Wilderness

What a wonderful birthday celebration. We had a lovely leisurely family lunch with extremely attentive friendly service and amazing food. Really unique cocktail and wine list too. Thank you Wilderness team.
P.S. if you are wondering whether to go for the £75 or the £100 menu, as we were, go for the £100 one - no regrets!

Absolutely amazing place. Great vibe/decor. Awesome soundtrack. The most delicious and well presented food. Staff were happy and very knowledgeable. Not a single criticism. 💯 superb

Not our first rodeo and always an absolute delight 😍
The food is absolutely DIVINE, the presentation is wonderful, the ambience is friendly and inviting, the venue is quirky and interesting, and the tastes are nothing short of SPECTACULAR. Don't wanna spoil the surprise but want to give you an idea of how great this place is, so here's just a couple of pics 😁
In short, it's 3 hours of total bliss and it's worth every penny in my humble opinion. It's like nothing else and is SO much more than dining out. Can't wait to go again 😍
Big love and praise to the team - keep doing what you do, it's AWESOME! 🙌🏽😁

One of my best experiences ever, amazing food, amazing staff, amazing atmosphere, honestly it’s a hidden gem, it was my wife birthday, thank you so much for making it one of her best experiences in her life, highly recommended.

Amazing food and drink, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and chef. A relax rock and roll fine dining experience.

The Wilderness. Unique. Incredible. Exceptional. The Wilderness had been on our list for an extraordinary amount of time and it was definitely worth the wait and the money.
The atmosphere felt like a contradiction: intimate, yet eclectic, casual yet extraordinary. We knew the only thing not to be contradicted was the food. Be prepared to be swept off your feet with delicious flavours exploding in your mouth. Every morsel was as decadent as the last!
We went for the 12 course meal, without the wine pairing - which is definitely worth it! The produce is seasonal and fresh. Fantastic service with knowledgeable and friendly staff, they made our experience thoroughly enjoyable. Not a fault. Can't wait to come back for more...

was taken here for a work event, and i was asked what type of cuisine i’d be interested in. i asked for somewhere where i’d be eating the unexpected and i could put my complete trust in the chefs - and the wilderness did not disappoint. up there with the best food i’ve eaten in the city, still talking to everyone i’ve seen since about the ch-ch-changes (banana) dish - absolute showstopper, spectacular food. if you’re considering coming here, this is your sign to do it.

Wondrous Wilderness. We so enjoyed our lunch. Each course we had looked wonderful and tasted sublime. The service was attentive, friendly and informative, the wine divine and the playlist and atmosphere relaxing. THANK YOU ALL
K. H.
In my experience so far this is the best Michelin star restaurant in Birmingham. The staff as well as the food was amazing definitely an experience you have to try. It's not your conventional Michelin restaurant but it definitely exceeded expectations.
A. G.
Incredible experience from start to finish.
The taster menu was a delight to all the senses.
Very knowledgeable staff. The mix vine and coctail flight definitely enhance the whole experience.

Great experience .. The food was superb and I like the open kitchen. The service, was again excellent, with the waiters explaining each dish in detail, with a short story how it was inspired. Highly recommend!
A. D.
A great freindly place where all the staff work hard to make you experience one to remember.
S. H.
Superb service, good wine. Great glasses knowledgeable staff. We enjoyed the rock music. It only seats 20. We went for lunch on a Friday and there were only 10 diners.

Pretentious. Ego trip. In your face. With exception food!!!! 9 out of 10 dishes excite the tastebuds. Colourful service. Just overpriced.

Fantastic. Amazingly intimate dining experience. I would highly recommend a visit without hesitation. I was a touch disappointed with the drinks pairing though. But not enough to affect the rating I’d give.

We went to The Wilderness to celebrate a birthday. We had the 10 course taster with the mixed flight of drinks and we were not disappointed. The food was incredible and like nothing we have ever tried before and the drinks were unique and delicious! The service was also amazing which made this evening truly special.

Fantastic. Amazingly intimate dining experience. I would highly recommend a visit without hesitation. I was a touch disappointed with the drinks pairing though. But not enough to affect the rating I’d give.

A unique setting with rock-themed dark decor, this modern, Michelin quality restaurant offers attentive and knowledgeable service combined with a fantastically imaginative tasting menu. Flavours to blow your taste buds out of the water, you really will experience a culinary delight on your visit here. The drinks selection is vast with many top quality wines to choose from and the cocktail menu is fun and one of a kind, with some locally-themed gems. An award-winning Sommelier, a Great British Menu Chef-inspired food and friendly staff make this place what it is.

Visited wilderness twice now, once in the city centre and recently the JQ venue. The food is amazing, the staff are excellent and explain all the dishes one by one. The optional wine pairing is a great addition but otherwise there’s good wine at reasonable prices. The taster menu at lunch is a steal for just £40. We had a party of 7 friends and each person loved the whole experience. It’s not stiff and formal like most fine dining restaurants, and the indie tunes topped it off for us. Well done Wilderness team for making my beloved Birmingham an even more sought after place when it comes to dining, and cannot wait to visit nocturnal animals, of which I hear great things. Good look with the Michelin star, you really deserve it!
D. W. (.
Surprising at every turn.
"why the hell would you put x with y?!"
Turns out it's a hellish good combination.
The paired drinks are very well explained well worth a go.
I would be surprised if this place doesn't have a star next time they give them out
S. M.
From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and helpful, taking coats and showing us to our seats whilst explaining the menu and generally getting to know us. We decided on the long menu with drinks flight to match and this was 100% the right choice. Flavours you never realised matched were presented and explained eloquently by the knowledgable staff. A true trip around the world in terms of taste and no dish left anything but a brilliantly crafted after taste. Have wanted to visit for a long time but took the occasion of a best friends birthday to make a booking and i can only say to anyone else - don't hesitate! It is worth every penny. Credit where credit is due to the chefs and staff, you truly made the evening one to remember. We will be back.
R. S.
Incredible food!!!! Such an amazing experiece we really really enjoyed it as a special treat. We did the short course and the drinks pairing and I would recommend it to anyone.
M. L.
I've been looking forward to dinner at The Wilderness since we made the reservation two months ago.
Sometimes places let you down when you have high expectations but not this time.
Without going in to detail, the imagination, quality of ingredients and sheer cooking skill were matched by the passion and friendliness of the service.
A wonderful evening that exceeded my sky high expectations.
A. V.
Probably one of the top 5 restaurants in Birmingham. Food is exceptional and great music helps the mood of the occasion. Fantastic lunch
D. V.
Hmmm, if the rating was based on the location it wouldn't make the grade, a hidden gem though. But WOW the food is incredible. Well worth the 2 month plus wait. Let down by poor toilet facilities ( unisex and disabled ?).
Another issue, the young waiter that described the dishes was not very clear and neither of us could really understand him as he went too fast. The rest of the staff were excellent. Definitely a place for a special occasion. Really hope they get more recognition/awards for their food creations as they are sublime. Oh, and the even coffee at the end was the best we've tasted too!
Good luck guys.
P. W.
Just stunning, food, staff, service, wine list.. Pretty much faultless whilst retaining its sense of fun. Brilliant.
C. W.
Apart from the great food this place has an a great atmosphere. Unlike fine dining of years gone by this is not stuffy or pretentious, instead you get some very friendly staff and a laid back feeling.
The food is worth tasting with an incredible 8 or 10 courses on offer. I was pleasantly surprised to see pescatarian and vegan options on the menu too.
Worth a visit!
V. W.
It is really, really good.
But maybe a little too expensive - more so than any Michelin starred restaurant I've ever been.
J. B.
Incredible meal, the food was brilliant, great atmosphere, I had wonderful time.
B. S.
A fun place to eat. Food is stunning. Place needs to be poshed up a bit. Started as a pop up and it still feels like it - hopefully they'll continue to be popular and get themselves a nicer place.
S. H.
Beautiful place, even better food 😍
A. D.
A great freindly place where all the staff work hard to make you experience one to remember.
H. C.
My wife and I love this place. It's always had very few tables and as such you really feel you are being looked after. The team is amazing and will wax lyrical about the food the drink answering any questions you have. And then we come to the food. Each time I eat here I'm blown away. Simply my favourite restaurant, that's all there is to say.
U. P.
Absolutely adored everything about The Wilderness. The staff were perfect and so knowledgeable, the food was nothing short of perfection and the whole meal was such a special occasion. Thank you to the wonderful Alex and his team for looking after us and making us feel so special. This is how restaurants should be done. We cannot wait to return. 💙
V. A.
The place it’s nice and the food it’s ok. In my opinion the best of the restaurant are the desserts and sweets.
I. C.
Astonishing food, great service. It's an absolute must visit if you're looking to get something a little different from your eating experience!
L. M.
Absolutely incredible experience. Loved every course, fabulous vibe (music had us bopping in our chairs) and the team were brilliant as usual. Thank you!
E. B.
Amazing friendly staff, great food, very different experience.. great day
S. T.
Absolutely perfect experience, beautiful food, incredible staff, I loved it and wanted to hug everyone by the end. Thank you.
J. G.
When having 8 courses, it's extremely rare that every single course is absolutely on point. I couldn't fault a single thing from the dishes that came out of the kitchen this afternoon. An unbridled joy from start to finish.
D. T.

well worth the money staff are very attentive but not in your face food is obviously amazing and surroundings are music are brilliant I'll be back for sure
G. T.
Just great !!! Outstanding food, ever so friendly staff, in a relaxed prefect size setting. Makes you ... feel good. My "best place for food" in Birmingham.
D. D.
As we haven't been on holiday we have treated ourselves to special meals and this did not disappoint! Courses accompanied by exceptional Moet Hennessy wines etc. The food was really special, who knew leeks could taste so good! Staff were attentive and knowledgeable. recommend
R. S.
Wonderful experience. Clearly one of, if not the best, restaurant in the West Midlands. Not a 'smart' silver service kind of place, but unique, casual and interesting. Superb, novel dishes with great drink (alcoholic) pairing. Black decor throughout, but not too dark & great rock music, loud enough to hear, but not overpowering. Fabulous.
M. C. d. l. C.
Great food, friendly staff. Tasting menu including several dishes that I expected not to like, but did. High end quality, well presented, but at the same time appears not to take itself too seriously. Background Rock music and the acoustics were fine for me, but probably would not suit some people. Friendly abuse from the waiter was in keeping with the tone of our table. Will go back.
N. W.
Amazing food, lovely restaurant, very different to what you expect. Staff were amazing, very knowledgeable and friendly, would highly recommend.
D. T.
Phenomenal food in a totally unstuffy environment with extremely helpful staff and cool decor. The music is also another massive plus, no horrific jazz or dreadful R&B. I now wish I'd taken pictures of the food but it was so good, I'd eaten half of it before any thought of doing so had occurred to me. Will definitely visit again.
A. B.
Absolutely incredible experience. Fantastic food, brilliant atmosphere, staff are so professional and knowledgeable about the food, top class and so friendly. Impeccable service. Amazing, cant wait to go again.
m. P.
This place is nothing short of superb! Venue is intimate and tastefully decorated, promoting a relaxed informal atmosphere enhanced with excellent music in the background.
The food was incredible, perfectly cooked with incredible flavours and excellent presentation. The service whilst being relaxed was perfectly attentive, warm and welcoming.
The whole experience was outstanding and is easily one of the best places to eat in the UK let alone Birmingham
S. W.
Exceptional food, friendly service, great soundtrack!
And absolutely do the flight of drinks that isn't necessarily wine! Mind blowing.
j.
We went their last night for a wedding anniversary. The whole experience is completely innovative and turned the fine dining experience on its head. You feel relaxed, welcomed and the food it something else. We've been to Ramsey's Hospital Road and would say the food is on a par!! The team are young but extremely professional and very knowledgeable. Some of the reviews mentioned about the room being to dark and the music to loud, its definitely not and we loved guessing the tunes. Alex and his team has created something truly amazing and we'll definitely be back. Thank you for a fantastic evening.
L. R.
Excellent food. Great potential.
Good points are that the chefs certainly know what they are doing. The Monkfish, Lamb and the Big Mac are well worth the visit. They do some delicious desserts and the chocolate skulls were a real highlight. I believe that sometimes they sell these for special occasions so I will certainly be investing in them at some point as they were absolutely perfect. The music was great, and the open kitchen allows guests to see what's happening which is another bonus as it makes the environment really relaxed. A lot like Harborne Kitchen.
Unfortunately for us the experience wasn't quite what we expected. I had booked this for a weekday at 7.30pm so expected to be offered the £100 menu. The website clearly states the following: "Dinner menus are offered from £75 (short menu) or £100 (large menu) midweek, if your reservation is at 6pm you will only be offered the £75 menu". With this in mind I scoured the booking pages for ages searching a day when both of us were off work in the evening to ensure we had the larger menu offered and booked for 7.30. On arrival we were greeted with a glass of Prosecco each to celebrate a birthday. Nice touch. Very thoughtful and appreciated.
We were taken to our seat then offered a £65 menu. Something I had not seen on their website. Nevertheless the menu was lovely.
I asked the waitress why the £100 menu was not offered as I had booked and paid a £60 deposit for that menu. The waitress simply said it was only "this" menu tonight, and when pressed about it she finally said that three of the ovens weren't working so the whole menu could not be offered.
Now this, I don't mind. Things happen. However, this restaurant is Michelin guide recommended. Therefore it would be expected some form of communication about this would have been offered. Unfortunately the staff at the Wilderness did not do this and as such we were left questioning what had happened. I even thought I had booked it wrong but in checking so I hadn't. It felt as if the staff hoped we wouldn't notice. But looking around the room at other guests there were quite a few confused faces.
They are currently in the process of moving restaurant locations so there was an underlying feeling that perhaps the broken ovens had actually been moved out. The general decor was OK. The velvet curtains added a sense of warmth the seating area. However other things have become rather drab and worn. There is paint missing from the walls where it had been chipped off and the ladies toilets were below par. The seat was on at an angle and the door lock was hanging off the door and the floor was raised so it caught the bottom of the door when trying to shut it. It just didn't have that sense of a cared for restaurant. This may be put down to the fact they are moving locations but if they are still taking bookings then they should still be keeping the place up to scratch for the people who have never been before.
All in all I would go again and would recommend the food. We just expected and wanted more of it. Perhaps the new venue will be far better. They might be experiencing teething problems with the move.
A. M.
Enjoyed a fabulous fine dining cookery class with Alex, Chef Patron of the Wilderness restaurant. Its amongst my favourite restaurants and doing this during lockdown was a culinary highlight. Delicious! Everything was good in here. I highly highly recommended this place.
s. F.
A food experience, dazzling combinations of flavour and texture. Very good service
J. E.
Excellent experience all round. Make sure you don't eat too much beforehand as you'll struggle to eat the full tasting menu. Had a really enjoyable experience here. Didn't have the wine selection with our meal but the food was excellent. I'd also say slightly better value for money compared to the likes of simpsons.
D.
Outstanding. The quality of the food and presentation of every course was superb. A real meal to remember. Friendly and helpful staff. Great music too...which is always a bonus for me. We were scoring each course out of 10 and marking some 12!!!!!! Fantastic.
T. H.
My friend and I had the most amazing dining experience on Saturday. I can't say enough great things about the food, drinks and staff. The full tasting menu is the only way to go. Each dish is more astonishing than the last and the cocktail pairings are inspired. I cannot wait to come back!
S. M.
Had such a lovely evening yesterday. Staff, friendly and helpful, clear to see that they enjoy working here. Food was amazing we was all really sad when it was our last course because we didn't want the evening and the food to end.
The lovely relaxed atmosphere created was a real winner for me.
Please put on your website that tips can be only made in cash because we didn't have any cash and felt really bad that we was unable to leave a tip.
B. P.
We came to this restaurant for lunch. my friend recommended this spot. Well, we were not disappointed. The crew were extremely nice and we felt fantastic. The meal was great. We loved this place a lot and we will definitely return to this restaurant. Warmly recommended.
L.
Individually, everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Drinks pairing wasn't to my taste; drinks were mostly sweet cocktails which matched the food flavours exactly rather than complimented them. Service was very very slow and the decor is dark (we think it's a new venue since the pics here?). Nice but doesn't get close to it's fine dining competition in Brum.
A. H.
Just brilliant, fabulous, attentive staff, fine dining without stuffiness, every course was wonderful. Saag doughnuts.. What can I say, a new revelation. Another review complains about lack of champagne, this wasn't our experience. Can't wait to go back
D. K.
What a wonderful visit to The Wilderness last week. After a very warm welcome from Emma and KJ, I was shown to my table. I had the Taster Menu and it couldn't of been more special. The presentation and flavours were exceptional, with the making of each course being explained in detail by Loubie - the restaurant manager. All this with a great wine pairing and quality music playing in the background. Fine dining at its best. I would highly recommend a visit if you haven't yet had the pleasure.
R. M.
Fabulous food. Had a great experience at the Wilderness, will be going back when there's a menu change to try different dishes. Just a quick thanks to all the staff who work there for a memorable night, can't wait for my next visit. 👍
M. M.
We had a really enjoyable evening. The Taster Menu was fascinating and delicious. Very different. The staff were friendly, charming and extremely knowledgeable about each dish presented to us. A very pleasurable experience that I shall look forward to having again.
N. A.
My friend and I visited at around 6pm on a weekday. The staff were friendly, but not very attentive until directly questioned about if food was served. No mention was made of it and no menus were visible, but it didn't seem just like a bar. The menu was quite expensive and up-market. We probably didn't look like we could afford!
I liked the design inside the bar, with moss on the walls and tree trunks etc, but I thought the menu was a bit, can I say, pretentious.
The wine was very pleasant and served in a nice glass.
J. H.
Lovely food and staff. Only marked down as some of the decor could do with a spruce up and the toilets aren't great for an establishment of this type. Neither of which would prevent us from visiting again without hesitation.
L. O.
Awesome quality Restaurant .Visited a few times both with my partner and colleagues in a larger group. During Summer they have got a nice sitting outside in a quiet street. Fresh products. Proper balance of taste. Warm service.
S. V.
Exceptional food, worthy of at least one if not 2 Michelin star(s).
Quirky setting and lovely staff making for a "exceptional food-great setting" kind of experience. The entrance is wrong, the area of town is wrong, the music playlist is wrong ... it's all so wrong it's right and the food makes it clear that you know why!
T. H.
The Wilderness provided us with a flawless experience for our 20th wedding anniversary. The food was superb, the atmosphere was relaxed and the staff have the talent for making you feel special. We cannot wait to go back.
J. M.
Wonderful food!
J. M.
A great value taster menu. The food was excellent, each dish was unique and interesting in the best possible way. Good atmosphere and the staff were knowledgeable and friendly.
S. T.
Superb from start to finish. Look forward to a return visit.
s. w.
Ok it's not cheap. But what they do they do very well. We went to its first dedicated vegetarian night. It sold out. Amazing food. 10 dishes over 2 hours of culinary entertainment. Much recommended.
W. B.
I phoned up for a lunch reservation at very short notice, my mother is a celiac and the chefs went to extra effort to accomadate her. Even going to the trouble of creating her a new dish in just a few hours! I couldn't speak highly enough of how attentive the staff were. They really added to the experience which I really feel every one should get involved in.
S. L.
Last night was the opening night and re-launch as The Wilderness. I went for the story-based tasting menu with drinks matching. All the food and drink were excellent and paired well to compliment each other. Some of the highlights were the Scallops matched with a Green Gimlet cocktail, and (of course) a Cheddar Cheese Tart featuring the Ants that nomad and now The Wilderness have become known for using in their dishes. (For those that haven't tried Ants before, they have a surprisingly tangy or citrus flavour.)
Aside from the food and drink, I also really liked the new décor - bringing a hint of the forest into the restaurant, complete with occasional "indoor rain" to water the window boxes.
M. K.
Superb food, the menu was a delight to the senses and cooked to perfection.
The staff were brilliant all the food was explained and served with a friendly yet very professional manner
Well deserved five stars
S. B.
Sensational food, brilliant friendly staff. Great to be so close to kitchen. Hopefully get a chance to come back again. Terrys old fashioned whiskey...yes please!
d. D.
Oh boy what an experience.. We were both lucky enough to be part of a weekend party recently... Having our Sunday lunch provided by none other than Alex Claridge and he's amazingly talented team.. What a journey we had.. Every course came and went with a Gasp of delight and surprise from around the table of 26 people ..perfection in every way is how I describe the whole experience ...Alex and team. We will be back looking for more of the same ..thank you ..Two very happy people.

A real standout in the Birmingham - and entire UK - food scene. Incredible flavours, inventive combinations and impeccable presentation. Everything cooked to perfection, with fantastic service to boot. Impossible to fault.

Fantastic experience, I have been 3 times now and it is by far my most favourite restaurant in Birmingham. Knowledgeable staff and always a great menu.

Was taken here by friends for a 40th birthday treat and treat it was. I had the tasting menu with drinks package - some really unusual and interesting flavours and very skilled cooking. Highly recommend.

Having being to Nomad twice before (one #norules, one regular menu) me and the wife had very high expectations for The Wilderness (on our 5th anniversary - clang). I'm delighted to report that the quality has actually stepped up a level and this is definitely Nomad 2.0.
T. S.

(Translated) The short tasting menu is enough to delight in the immense quality of the cuisine. The service is also fantastic. If something worsens the valuation of the restaurant, it is the time you have to wait between dishes and the dining room smells like a kitchen.

El menú de degustación corto es suficiente para deleitarse con la inmensa calidad de la cocina. El servicio también es fantástico. Si algo empeora la valoración del restaurante es el tiempo que hay que esperar entre plato y plato y que el comedor huele a cocina.
