Reviews of English's of Brighton
A. H.
Great meal out in early evening. Lovely attentive waiter. Awesome seafood and fish dishes. Great local sparkling wine. All 3 courses were very tasty and I am sure we will go back.
We ordered off A La Carte, but there was a really good value set menu.
F. L.
Fantastic oysters, great wine list and a cracking value set menu. First time eating here but definitely won't be my last. Staff and service were great. I wish I'd had more room to finish off the Eton mess, the almond biscuit crumble mixed in was sublime!
N.
Beautiful seafood in a classic setting. The staff were warm and accommodating. Make sure you get the asparagus and truffle oil side!
Highly recommend and we’ll certainly be back next time we’re in Brighton.
D.
Amazingly good restaurant! it’s a shame that we didn’t visit earlier because we lived in Brighton for so long ! The traditional English menu with modern twist ! The Master chef is so talented ! will visit again.
J. T.
Google maps doesn’t exactly lead you to the right location but it that far from it (feedback for Google!). This is a rather popular restaurant serving all English food with a good variety of seafood 🦞. We were lucky to get a booking through calling the restaurant as the online system said there was none available on the day. We also get a very nice outside table for the family. Our waiter was very nice and made the experience wonderful and relaxing. We ordered the hot platter to share and it was a great variety of seafood which was responsible for 4 adults. The mains was rather good also however I found the whole lobster main with garlic butter was a bit disappointing. The quantity was also not reflective of its (£48) price. I felt the half lobster was better value. But would still recommend it

We visited during the Easter holiday. A great local seafood restaurant, the food is delicious and the young lady serving our table is friendly. 5-star for the food and the table experience itself. However, I took a star away because the reception person at the door is RUDE. This gentleman with some east-European accent at the door treated us condescendingly, not sure if it's because we look touristy. The way he looked and talked to me made me extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. The doorway is narrow, he seemed to deliberately stand in my way when I was passing by him. Even a decent person would be more polite than he is, not to mention he works as a receptionist in the hospitality industry.
E.
Amazing seafood restaurant, absolutely loved it! Grilled fish of the day was very fresh and tender, we went for a sea bass and monkfish, both delicious! Lovingly looking brownie was just a sweet dot after our lunch here.
s.
Great birthday experience! Made welcomed by the staff and even treated to a free glass of fizz. Definitely a place I would go to for for special occasions, A bit pricey but the quality is well worth it! Thank you guys!
s. m.
Jose the waiter made our experience so pleasurable and hosted a minefield of food and wine information. The food and wine was top draw. Happy valentine you filthy animals. #englinshsofbrighton #brightonseafood #happycouple

The best food / restaurant in Brighton if not the rest of the u.k. Miss Spanish food , so this is just brilliant !! The quality is refreshing high
Also the service from Grace was fabulous, thank you so much for beautiful long lunch . Have been waiting 2 years to enjoy your restaurant, all good things come them xx
T. S.
Wow absolutely amazing experience had the seafood platter for 2 excellent followed by fish and chips was cooked to perfection, great ambience very polite staff especially our waiter Tony would definitely recommend if looking for good quality cuisine and fresh seafood and fish 🐟
D. H.
Excellent little seafood restaurant! Top notch food, excellent quality and cooked to perfection, plus super friendly and helpful staff!
We dined outside since the weather had turned nice, but since its tucked back away from the main street it's fairly secluded.
Also have a great wine and cocktails menu to boot, will definitely be going back!
A. M.
Gorgeous! The oysters were up there with one of the best I’ve had and the tuna steak was cooked to perfection 😍
p. W.
Best meal we've ever had
Amazing attentive staff. If you visit Brighton you must visit this restaurant
K.
We visited on a Friday night and had the 8-course tasting menu, it was fantastic and paired with wine it was a nice evening.
K. C.
Incredible food with a great set menu - 2 courses for £32. We loved the risotto and Tuna steaks. Very friendly staff, delivering high end restaurant service and delicious food. Would come again and also recommend to others.
C. D.
Friendly service, the two course menu for £23 is really good value for money and great menu options and tasty food. Also liked that in the catch of the day you can pick out of three different fishes, i had the monkfish which was delicious.
E. S.
I really was looking forward to dining here. Staff was lovely at the outset, but my starter (dressed crab) came with loads of shell in it. My server was mortified and was kind enough to remove it from my bill. The rest of the meal was glitch-less but overpriced (not even that expensive, yet still overpriced) for what it was. It took ages to get my bill and in the end I wished I’d gone elsewhere. Atmosphere is lovely enough, but I wouldn’t return here or recommend it to others if it’s their only night in Brighton.
M. D.
Great seafood and service. Lovely presentation and an interesting interpretation of the classic British seafood restaurant, that avoids pretentiousness. Also very fairly priced (the hot platter particularly so), given the nicer aesthetic of the place.
P. M.
The best seafood restaurant I have ever been to. So we went twice before heading home. Exquisite oysters, mussels and sea bass - we only intent to use the set menu and ordered even more even more mussels and oysters - very naughty and the house wines (red and white) were great. If you are in Brighton this restaurant is a must :) almost forgot to say very helpful and friendly staff :)
H. M.
Unfortunately I can’t give this SIX Stars! … exceptional service, first class food and wine and very reasonably priced. This should easily be the No.1 restaurant in Brighton. See you again soon !
J. S.
Wonderful staff, food and atmosphere, until 2 obnoxious groups appeared (1 American, 1 snotty English cow) felt sorry for staff, as they were outstanding. Get in early in the day for Catch of the Day, as quickly goes. Option to have fish filleted, or left whole, a welcome change. Outstanding, would recommend to anyone.
S. G.
So good to be back sitting at the bar in Englishs,
Food & wine as good as ever, service top notch.
Fabio, the manager, made our meal of Halibut perfect using his filleting skills to perfection.
Shucking the oysters was the competent & very pleasant Estelle backed by the busy & efficient Owen.
I have been using this Brighton gem for a number of years now & am always pleased to return… and will again when next in town.
K. G.
Excellent and quiet restaurant. The seafood was amazing, and the service friendly and welcoming. Our reservation was spot on and the location very picturesque.
I would highly recommend if you want delicious food and peace of mind.
E. M.
A real pleasure to have lunch on the terrace with well cooked seafood and impeccable service. Strongly recommended when in Brighton.
A. S.
Really enjoyed our evening there.
Sea bass and sea robin were great, and for dessert make sure to order passion fruit tart, it's really amazing. Hope to visit next time we are in Brighton!
J. S.
Wonderful food, staff were fantastic. Took my mum for her birthday. We had a wonderful evening. Highly recommended.
S. U.
Had a delicious lunch here. Service and food were excellent. We walked in and were given a table for two, but reservations are recommended as the restaurant is quite small.
C. M.
Food is amazing, staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, can't go wrong.
r. f.
One of the best restaurants I've been too and the best seafood I've had. Portions are tidy and packed full of taste.
J. W.
I rang to book in advance and the person on the phone was very polite. There is great parking nearby and on arrival we were greeted so politly and the staff there can not do enough for you. Even as it got busy on the last night before lockdown 2. Then the food! Wow! AMAZING! This has become one of my top 3 places I have eaten for sure. The freshness, the presentation and the perfectly balanced flavours were amazing! We will be visiting again (when we can) and recommending this place to everyone that asks for somewhere that is juat perfect. The setting, the food, the staff everything about the place is special. Thank you all for an amazing meal and evening!
M. L.
Absolutely fantastic, they have the best oysters and Fish in Brighton, probably the U.K. their fish and chips are out of this world. I’m coming to Brighton only to eat here.
D. D.
English's is absolutely outstanding. The food is fantastic and the service is superb. When in Brighton we always try and visit English's I just can't fault it !
S. O.
We chose this restaurant out of a myriad of other options in Brighton due to the reviews. Can say it did not disappoint, if anything it was better than expected. The staff were attentive and chatty, guiding us with food choices and wine pairings. The seafood was exquisite through and through - we are rookies at shellfish etiquette and made an absolute mess but that was by the by. Overall the ambience with the live music, sitting outside on a cool summers eve and dining on superb food is an experience we will never forget.
M. O.
Very nice. Good quality food and service. Would recommend. Cold seafood platter is great.
E. J. L.
All food was so special and exotic. Dover sole a la meuniere was fabulous. Burger with fishcake tasted a little too spicy even for me who love spicy food. Should keep in mind that the average price is quite high.
A. H.
Delicious food with friendly unobtrusive service. Pleasant environs but a bit cold despite being offered seat by the heater
A. D.
Absolutely fantastic, could not fault the service, attention to detail and the outstanding quality of the food. Highly recommended.
H. T.
We came for lunch and had the squid and seafood platter. The food was very nice though maybe the presentation could be better. It was quite traditional though. The muscles and cockles were very good. Friendly staff :)
I. N.
Booked for dinner whilst in Brighton. It wasn’t too busy when I arrived, but it was a Saturday evening so it took a while after being seated to get a waiter to come to take my order. A lot on the menu carries allergy risks due to the way they prepare their food, and the chef was unable to prepare my requested dish separately, which was understandable but a shame. As a nut allergy sufferer it was a shame that what I’d seen on their website menu, I couldn’t have - but the waiters were extremely helpful in sorting out an alternative option for me to eat. I had the tiger prawns in garlic with a salad for my main, which was nice but not massively filling.
C. G.
Absolutely beautiful, my new favourite restaurant. I live in london and will not hesitate to drive here just to eat. Fantastic classy staff. Incredible food. Cant wait to return
L. V.
Great seafood spot, with a good wine selection. A little bit pricey, but the food is worth it. Decor and ambiance is like walking back in time to the 40s. Service was great. One improvement would be some background music. The dead silence makes it slightly awkward to make conversation.
N. M.
We had an excellent lunch.
The cold platter was delicious.
We were really looked after by Alex. A lovely atmosphere.
M.
Main courses absolutely delicious. Batter on the cod really excellent. Fritto Misto to start was a bit bland. Eton Mess to finish was awesome.
J. S.
Absolutely delicious food and fabulous service. Everything was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavour. I can't fault it, the best meal out I've had in years.
C. W.
Love this restaurant so much! Been there a few times now and the food is always great! Had the squid ink pasta and it was delicious!! Will always come again!
S. P.
One of the best seafood restaurants I have ever been to! Waiters are so friendly! Quality of food is also 10/10. Highly recommend.
A. R.
Great sea food restaurant good service great location on the Lanes staff very friendly Top Draw
S. M.
Excellent service, lovely surroundings. Food was amazing, particularly the mussels. We had the set menu which we thought was better value. Both courses were delicious, but sadly we were too full for dessert. Would recommend if you're looking for a seafood restaurant and don't mind splashing out.
R. K. (. L.
Fantastic place for seafood. Lovely setting with live jazz in the background. The fish cake burger....was phenomenal, the combination of tastes was excellent. Good service ..friendly and professional.
J. K.
First rate food, service, and atmosphere - an amazing night's dining. Oysters, smoked eel, fish pie and an amazing cheese plate, plus a wonderful NZ gewurtstraminer to accompany. Would recommend without hesitation!!!
L. H.
Best oyster and lobster in a long time
S. V.
Visited English's last night for my son's birthday. We were greeted with warm smiles by all staff.
All food was exceptional, plentiful and served professionally. I can't wait to return.
Thank you English's, birthday experience par excellence.
L. H.
Totally fabulous lunch today. We sat outside mid November; warm & toasty with heaters, Bloody Mary’s to start, delicious oysters, the freshest fish & Chablis. Brilliant service. Couldn’t be a more perfect way to lose an afternoon in Brighton...😍
S. U.
Lovely stuff
Cost feeling
Goos food
Pretty comprehensive wine menu
No music
Mid-high price
S. O.
Delicious seafood at English's! We both had the seafood pie and really enjoyed it. It's a big portion, too! The starters were decent, too. We had the two-course set menu, which isn't _super_ expensive at £23. Sure, it's not cheap! But it's a very high quality restaurant.
The service started off a bit dodgy. We were brought a 'pre-menu'/apperitive menu. It was basically just dropped off by the waiter who then walked off without saying anything. We were also left out in the rain for a bit too long, really. We ended up just standing under cover, not at our table, for quite a while. The service quality improved therein, though.
J. C.
Just brilliant. Me and my wife went here for our first wedding anniversary and loved. The staff were super nice and the food was delicious. It costs a bit but for a special occasion its a lovely warm and welcoming vibe
D. J. W.
We have Fish and Chips here, it was very good but to be honest I was expecting it to be top notch. The batter was more like tempura which was nice, perhaps not what I was expecting. The service was very good and friendly.
T. m.
Lovely little restaurant! Good food & wine choices.
I. S.
best service I have received for many years.
The food was very good, I'll be back next time I'm in Brighton.
J. W.
Fabulous meal celebrating our parents 50th wedding anniversary, the attentive but relaxed service was great.
All the dishes were delicious, fish and oysters were fresh and extremely well cooked.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend for a drink with a few oysters through to a delicious meal out. Thank you for helping us celebrate with them....
R. M.
Proper fish and seafood restaurant. Proper service. Great classics. Decent vfm
K. H.
Not bad.. Steak is cooked less than normal.. You better ask for medium well-done if you enjoy medium usual.
H. H.
Cannot praise too highly this excellent restaurant. If fish is your protein this is the place! Delicate Coquilles St Jacques for starter followed by crab and lobster gnocchi with accompanying tempura squid. Wine was a Melon Blanc which suited my dishes as well as my partners ( he had same starter followed by Sole Meuniere - again superb for him as sole was beautifully deboned by waiter). Dessert for me was Coffee Afogato and their version if "Eaton Mess" - again delicious. I cannot recommend it highly enough and it is always a joy to return to. Well done for an excellent birthday dinner for me (by the way!).
A. W.
Fantastic seafood restaurant!!! It is tucked away in The Lanes. Tiny place but beautiful. Its not cheap, but certainly the place to spoil some special. We had oysters, champagne, lobster, cocktails....came to £260.00. But worth every single penny!
a. j.
In 1983 I had the good fortune to win a contract to commence restoration of the ceilings of the Royal Pavilion. The 1st was the Banqueting Hall and on completion I and my Wife celebrated at English's. As I am in my late 70's and in Brighton possibly for the last time I thought I would treat myself to a Lunch
I am delighted to say English's did not dissapoint.
Great memories.
Thank you.

A. B.
Exceptional quality service and absolutely delightful menu!! Atmosphere is beyond warm, table cloth service, silverware cutlery.. A treat all the way!
H. K.
Very nice restaurant
So tasty food
Personal very friendly
I very enjoy this place
E. h.
Such an amazing restaurant! Fresh fish, extremely attentive staff and wonderful desserts, especially orange and rum tiramisu.
B. A.
Fantastic food, lovely staff, comfy atmosphere. Totally recommend.
P. H.
Wonderful place, great menu, excellent food. Made very welcome .
H. W.
Lovely. Very good and friendly service, great food and atmosphere.
S. Z.
My wife and I really enjoyed our meal, and experience at English's.
Firstly, the staff were responsive to our needs and able to offer us a slightly earlier dining time than we originally booked, which was helpful.
Upon arrival at the restaurant, we were greeted by (the person who we assumed was) the restaurant manager. He took us to our table straight away.
Our waiter arrived with menus straight away and offered us drinks. He was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt with his service throughout.
I had (raw) oysters as a starter, and the fish and chips as a main. My wife had the mussels as a starter and the fish and chips as a main. Prior to this, we had some gluten-free bread and pate. All of the food was excellent - fresh, delicious and where appropriate, well cooked.
Given the quality of the food and the experience, the prices are reasonable.
Would certainly recommend, and come again.
R. P.
Full course of seafood main dishes (Scrimp, Scallop, Mussels and Sea Bass). Delicious!!! Cheers
M. M.
I don’t even like fish and I loved the fish here. I have a super sensitive sense of smell and nearly all fish smells old to me. I had cod fish and chips and it was lovely. Wine was fantastic too. Czech waitress and big maitre D guy were great. Will definitely come back.
I. E.
According to our waiter English's has been going since 1865 which must make it one of Brightons oldest restaurants. I prefer to go for lunch and sitting outside is a great experience. The crab and lobster bisque to start was as good as always and was followed by sea bass, one of the fish of the day. There was a choice of having it served whole or filletted. The set menu (£23 for two courses) gives you a choice of two sides with your main dish. The food was excellent and the service professional. There are several wines available in a 50cl carafe and a far more extensive selection by the bottle. Allow for £50 a head for two courses with wine and coffee
T. C.
Very good quality and reasonably priced. Good service in Nice setting.
V. M.
Lovely historical venue, good menu and wine list.
G. M.
Simply .. wow! Loved the place. Great food and great service. It does come at a price, but is well worth it. Shall be back for sure.. Currently in my top 3 restaurants for the south east.
I. H.
We had an extremely great time here😍😍😍 Mussels and lobster are really impressive. We will definitely come back to Brighton for the amazing restaurant.
R. R.
Always brilliant. Food and service top notch.
J. A.
Beautiful meal. Seafood so fresh and cooked to perfection. One of best meals I think I've ever had. Staff very professional and service spot on.
K. D.
My friend and I had lunch today at this lovely restaurant. We keep English's for a little treat as it always delivers the best fish dishes (the moules and sea bass are wonderful!) a glass or 2 of the best champagne and Customer service which is of such a high standard. The Maitre 'd is' tip top'. Everything about this restaurant from food, service and ambience is 5 star, special and very welcoming. Can't wait until we are back treating ourselves.
G. B.
Very impressed by English's last night, the food and service was absolutely tremendous! Added by the benefit of Lobster Friday, which should not be missed. We will certainly be returning!
D. C.
Well prepared and presented seafood in a comfortable and well maintained traditional restaurant. Good wine list. Service was a little slow in taking our dessert order.
B. D.
Wonderful food and great service! Thank you!
A. m. G.
The food was delicious, we ordered the lobster and prawn starter was superb and the sea bass amazing!
Five stars for the customers service and food! If you want a very good fish I suggest this place!
L. F.
Amazing venue, gorgeous food, made the best espresso martini I've ever had.
Perfect last meal out in Brighton!!
T. K. C. G.
We had the pleasure of celebrating our wedding anniversary with these guys last night. The food was stunning with a variety of options and the staff went out of their way to ensure rules and regulations for social distancing were in place. Well done guys, good luck moving forward and thank you for a lovely meal :)
S. L.
A wonderfully special dining experience in English's this evening- Anna and Fabio were so attentive and looked after us with delicious seabass, monkfish and oysters plus yummy desserts - esp. sticky toffee pudding! Thankyou xx
K. k.
Delicious food, professional and very friendly staff.
N. G.
Stumbled on English's by accident in The Lanes. Helpful staff and a great menu and good value wine list. Will visit again
T. S.
Just really excellent. Great service, great food (and wine), and a lovely spot to spend a couple of hours. Will visit again.
F. A.
Lovely setting but fish was overcooked and tasted like frozen fish
D.
Fantastic restaurant, great food, great service, just make sure you book!
p. p.
J. L.
Amazing food, fantastic service. The place was very covid complient, they gave us fresh blankets and had heaters. They did the best mussels I've ever had!
A. G.
Very nice restaurant with lots of different seafood to choose from.
M. &. F.
We had a really great dinning experience at this restaurant. The food was SO tasteful and with good quality ingredients. The ambiance was also lovely (outdoor), and we were lucky that there was a band playing at the square on that night which made the night even more special. The service was very good and friendly. We took the 3-course menu for £25 and considered that it was very good value for money. It is a great restaurant for those who like seafood. Our only "complaint" is that the restaurant is in Brighton, and not in London! Otherwise we would make it as our go-to place. This is our favorite restaurant in England so far - we have lived here for almost 3 years, dining out often and we have tried a couple of 1-star Michelin in London. We are definitely going back there next time we visit Brighton.
I. -. I. U.
This was our first time eating at this place.
Emanuel was the best. Outstanding customer service and delicious seafood!
I highly recommend this restaurant.
Enjoy !
T. B.
Passing one morning my partner and I decided it would be a nice place for dinner that night......and with the covid-19 situation we thought it best to book early.
If you are a fan of seafood and really good service then this is your place. Fresh and well put together and at a surprisingly good price.
C. A.
We booked English’s as a date night treat for our Brighton ‘staycation’ - and what a treat. We had the chefs platter which was phenomenal, and the service was second to none. We didn’t catch the name of our waiter (the Hungarian gentleman) but he was super lovely, great chat and amazingly attentive.
S. H.
What an outstanding experience we had at English's! The food was superb and the service spot on. We particularly enjoyed our post-dinner drink at the bar. The atmosphere was so friendly - we immediately felt welcome - and we were treated royally. All this and it's locally owned and operated. We couldn't recommend English's enough.
N. M.
I have been visiting English's for more years than I care to remember and have never been disappointed and today was no exception. Food and wine was sublime. Trevor who looked after us was fabulous ! Great fun and really helpful. Long may this great culinary icon continue.
R. A.
The tasting menu with a chardonnay is excellent
S. J.
Excellent restaurant staff and food great will return
J. S.
High end seafood restaurant, but if you go for a set menu it's very affordable (£23 for two courses, £28 for three). It's the kind of restaurant that surprises you with its deliciousness and inventiveness, and makes you want to start experimenting with cooking more yourself.
The surprise of the day was the gelato, which was better than any I've had in Italy. Service was also exceptional, despite it being one of the busiest days of the year. Friendly attentive and extremely fast. Just beware, they add an optional 12.5% tip onto your tab, which can bring up the price.
Will definitely go again for another special occasion, possibly around lobster Friday!
W. W.
Market fish of the day was a beautiful 1.6kg Brill , 2 sides of chips and tartar sauce and garlic butter and we only went in for a simple fish and chips ! Excellent , friendly service which is always consistent, I've been coming here for years. A great wine list too.
S. S.
Just super food and atmosphere
P.
An excellent late lunch/early dinner. Thank you
A. S.
Amazing food; lobster Friday for the win. Definitely get a bottle a something fizzy from Sussex.
M. C.
Set menu is great, portion sizes are very generous too. Attentive service and well priced for high quality food.
S. S.
What a beautiful place for lunch, with absolutely delicious food and friendly service.
This is a great place to go. We had Tuna, Dover sole, lobster, kids fish and chips and Seabass. And it was all absolutely perfectly done. I’ve not enjoyed seafood like this for a long time. The lobsters were perfectly done, the batter / tempura on the kids fish was lovely and light and crispy, (i’d go back there just for that!) and we had a delicious bottle of English wine (from Lyme bay) which I thought was very reasonable value. Such a pleasant experience all round on a beautiful little terrace outside. Didn’t want to leave. Thank you English’s and your brilliant team.
J. k.
Wow Heartily recommended to us some while ago. Best recommendation I have been given. We had a wonderful Saturday lunch. Staff very friendly, service excellent. Lovely wine. Food fabulous. And savouries on the dessert menu!! The oyster welsh rarebit was a marvellous way to finish the meal. Thank you one and all.
K. N.
I have lived in Brighton for 35 years my 1st visit. Old school restaurant, good selection on the lunch set menu and extensive wine list.
Service staff were faultless.
R. C.
This place was overall quite good: food was great, fish excellent, oysters fine, wine very good. Great location. What I took points out for is the service. Absolutely horrendous. I had to wait an eternity for them to even give me a menu (I was a solo woman for lunch). Their wines by the glass were not cheap, so I asked the waitress her recommendation and she seemed like she's never heard of different type of white wines. I ended up on a safe bet on my part - Gewürtz - but still. They got the bill wrong 2 times!!! First time they under charged me, second time they over charged me... it just felt like I had to do their job for them. Lol. But again, food is great, albeit a bit pricey 2 courses for 20£... but it's in a very touristy spot in Brighton. I might go back, but I'm not running.

Had the roasted fruit de mer sharing platter and it was some of the best fish and seafood I have eaten in years. Fish was cooked perfectly and the little clams were so tasty. Couldn't eat a dessert as was soo full from the delicious platter but saw some others in the restaurant and they looked really good too. Really good value for really good food
N. L.
Booked to go for lunch with my wife to this most traditional of Brighton restaurants..
The service was good but unfortunately was let down by the below par food.
Our fish was overcooked and the dish overall lacked flavour. Would think twice before returning. Overall disappointing.
L. T.
3 incredible courses! Absolutely delicious
J. P.
4 of us had lunch at an outside table. A great experience in all respects, my out of town guests loved it. Food looked and tasted great, service was friendly and prompt. Covid precautions in place. I always enjoy a visit to English's.
A. W.
Outstanding. Service was excellent, food was delicious, drinks were perfect. Proper bit.
Definitely eat here.
J. s.
Lovely meal here with good service. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Food choice of mainly fish and also pork or steak even Steak and Kidney pie. Puddings were also a good selection. Highly recommended.
J. B.
Had very nice fish and chips here, with the eclairs for dessert. Food is good quality and the service excellent. Waiter was very understanding of my wife's needs as she is pregnant.
T. K.
Very nice service but the food was disappointing. We had smoked salmon and crab croquettes for starter and lobster Thermidor and fish stew for mains. Not terrible, just pretty average and bland. It’s really too expensive to be ‘just about okay’. I appreciate it’s an old Brighton institution but in my opinion, it could do with upping its game a little.
J. J.
Been going to English's since the late 80's, and the decor has not changed much and nor has the food; Absolutely delicious, with excellent service. I even had a free wine tasting when I mentioned that I'd chosen the wrong wine with my scallops; cheered me up no end!
Tried most things on the menu but will be going through the Autumn menu now. Not had a duff meal there yet. You've got to try their scallops, all versions and varieties; Gorgeous!
J. G.
Fab for oyesters. Ask to pair with a good wine.
P. J.
This place is an absolute delight! My husband took me for a date night knowing how much I love fish and seafood, despite him not liking it so much. He managed to have some lovely food he thoroughly enjoyed (you can order meat) while I had a delight of a dinner. They have a few twists on some classics, like the potted shrimp which comes with a lemony top that tastes more like lemon cheesecake than savoury lemon. Their skate wing is to die for, and to make it absolutely perfect, they had a sparkling Albariño in their wine menu which is not only impossible to find but also delicious.
The staff were really attentive and polite, we will certainly be coming back.
A. G.
Meal was pleasant enough, seating outside was nice but not really anything oustanding. My fish was a bit salty. Steak cooked nicely and kids cannelloni was fine. They had run out of the complimentary baby meals, always this kind of think a bit strange when there's a supermarket round the corner that sells them. Plus maybe it's just me but I hate it when waiters clear away my fellow dinners plates before everyone has finished. Maybe just my bete noire. Still a decent place and worth a look.
O. M.
The food was brilliant, yet another Brighton restaurant that can provide detailed answers when faced with questions surrounding dietary requirements. The food was five star but the service was 4 star. When asking for the bill we were simply presented with a card machine stating £80+ which I assumed was right based on what we ordered and the 12.5% service charger, however had I not been one to look at prices I would have liked to have seen a breakdown of what we had been charged for. The other thing that let it down was the space inside the restaurant, understand there's not much that could be done but one less table may have made it feel much bigger. If you ate too much I'm not sure you'd be able to squeeze yourself past the tables.
F. W.
Beautiful food, fantastic service and magical setting, if you've never been here you need to try it at least once in your life!
M. B.
Great food and wine selection. The "Bloody Mary Oyster Shot" is a yummy invention. Attentive staff. However, price-food quality relation grades it down to 4 🌟 as it's a bit pricey.
a. g.
BEST Gluten free Fish and Chips EVER!!
Can not recommend this place more for its traditional fish and chips, which is gluten free as a standard! We both had it and the batter was sooo crispy, the fish was large and moist. The chips where good and the whole thing came with fresh mushy peas and fresh tartar sauce. We even had Gluten free bread and mackerel pate which was all fresh and the GF bread came out warm ^_^. Its about £15 each, so not the cheapest, but it excellent!... Oh and if you like wine! This place has over 100 wines!
L. M.
Wow! The fresh fish we had here was incredible, one of the best I've ever had! Nice quiet and relaxing atmosphere and a great location in central Brighton. Thanks for a great evening.
D. H.
In my humble opinion this is probably the best fish and seafood restaurant on the south coast of England , the menu is varied and the meals are beautifully cooked. English's could not be described as cheap, but the quality of the food is high, the staff are knowledgeable, the wine list is extensive so the meals represent good value. We really enjoyed our visit and will undoubtedly return.
C. P.
Classic restaurant, good service and fantastic food.
V. K.
Very nice evening with oysters nice music outside and polite staff.
K. D.
Excellent restaurant, great service from skilled waiters - fillet fish at your table. Mainly fish and seafood with limited meat on offer. Not cheap so good for a special occasion.
F. B. V.
Always love going to this place. I always go with my friends and the food is always fabulous! The staff are also very friendly. I especially liked the full dessert menu and the oysters. Brilliant place!
R. C.
Some of the best seafood I've had. The platters are a great way to experience a selection of the food they have
J. H.
Nice courtyard setting, with excellent, attentive service from the staff. The staff were very knowledgeable and they have a great selection of Oysters, wine and champagnes.
Personally I loved the mussels.
C. H. K.
Fresh seafood...great service....and wonderful setting
M. G.
This restaurant is one of the best in Brighton. Delicious food, very well placed and our waiter Umberto was so amazing. Made our experience even better. Will come back for sure!
a. n.
Best fish in town a must visit. Staff treat you with care and good humour.
Lovely setting great friendly atmosphere, highly recommend good value for money.
A. H.
Service and food was amazing. Interior could maybes do with a bit updating. High end food and drinks options. Not cheap but food was so wonderful, wine was nice and service was brill so of course it wouldn't be cheap. We will be returning again when we come back to Brighton
A. A.
Literally one of the best most relaxing dinner that I had since I live in England!
We went there last week and we ordered roasted plateau de fruits de mer and was stunning!
The pistachio, profiterole, chocolate salami, sponge dessert was behind ...
Quality of the food is high, the staff are knowledgeable, the wine list is extensive.
We really enjoyed our visit and will undoubtedly return.
A. W.
Really excellent food.
C. K.
Great food, nice selection of wines.
I would recommend this place to anyone.
L. G.
Mmmmmm, great fish and chips and a pint at reasonable prices and in a prime location. East Street is stunning, and only a stones throw from the sea front. The food was great, the service too was strong, even though the restaurant was packed.
B. E.
My partner and I had booked a table for lunch on the last day of our long weekend in Brighton. A friend of mine long recommed English's and I have been itching to go there and sample what they had to offer. Whilst other may complain of the outdated decor etc, we both loved it! Clean, calm atmosphere, with bubbling conversation all around. It was nice to go somewhere where you could hear yourself talk, and not be surrounded by rowdy youngsters. It was like being transported to another era, and this is why English's is still going, and liked by many. Yes some of the items on their menu are on the expensive side, but the the food is of very good quality, and cooked to a high standard. My partner and I both had 2 courses from their Autumn menu, The manager and restaurant staff were very welcoming, and attentive. They were very accommodating as I am partially sighted and requested a window table for better lighting, Our waitress was attentive without being overly fussy, our food arrived promtly, was very tasty. I would recommed this restaurant if you are looking for something that little bit different from the norm. Will definitely be heading here again next time we go to Brighton :-)
J. L.
Superb seafood, an excellent set menu & good value wines if you look carefully
A. B.
The food was good but service was disappointing. Staff were not friendly, on the border of being impolite. For the money I would expect better service but the food is still worth a visit
G. L.
Had a great meal with friends.
G. S.
Just perfect......always love going here. We went last night and as usual the food was excellent, the staff were really great. Why this place is not in the top 10 for Brighton Restaurants is beyond me.
T. C.
Great old school restaurant, where you are remembered what good service used to be.
The see food platter to share was incredible, especially the Impeccable oysters!
We had a lovely time !
z.
Fantastic food, great service, and fair prices. Lots of gluten free choices! Will definitely be back!
A. S.
You have to visit here. Oldest oyster bar in Brighton. Really high quality for a very reasonable price. Staff are wonderfully amazing. Sea food to die for. Fantastic.
R. B.
Service was not as friendly and welcoming as before. Food was beautifully prepared and presented but it is one of those restaurants where the portions are so small you need another dinner when you get home, even after three courses.
Z. S.
Excellent food , lovely experience and very attractive waiters❤
T. E.
What a wonderful restaurant. Thank you so much for having us. Excellent service and food. Made my daughter feel very welcome too. ❤️
J. H.
This place is a real blast from the past. A wee bit touristy as you would expect due to its central position in ' The Lanes' . Superb oysters! Great choice of fish. Attentive staff and cosy surroundings. Would recommend. Suggest you book ahead especially in the summer
E. L.
Was expecting more. They even ran out of lobster. The oysters were fabulous. Gnocchi was really good. Lobster bisque and clams were just OK. Staff misinterpreted alot of guests requests. Decor is dated and cramped. No music on a Sunday night so was eerily quiet. Won't go back.
S. P.
A pleasant enough experience, but I do get annoyed when restaurants like this slap a 12.5% 'optional' service charge on the bill.
J. G.
Have to say, that is the best sea bass I have ever eaten. Beautifully presented and cooked. Yes more expensive than some other places but excellent quality. I guess the old adage applies.
S.
Really great staff, friendly helpful and accomodating! Food was all great and have nothing to fault!
M. G.
Absolutely amazing seafood, especially the oysters, tempura oysters were particularly amazing. Really friendly staff, highly knowledgable on the menu and the wine. Excellent and very reasonably priced, a must visit! 👍🏻
S. D.
So the food was nice all be it a bit pricey, however, watch the bill!!
The reason I've only given 3 stars is two fold, firstly I was billed for alcoholic drinks that we neither ordered nor consumed! Secondly there is according to the bottom of the menu a "discretionary" gratuity of 12.5% which is automatically applied to the bill and is not itemised separately as an option, so after reciving a bill of £144- for four main meals and four drinks (Vodka & coke, 2 lagers & an apple juice (plus the drinks previously mentioned)) I was a bit shocked.. The actual bill was £113-, so be careful in this establishment when you get the bill. Oh, and no mints or chocolates ect with the bill either, needless to say we won't be returning...
A. C.
The lobster thermidor and champagne was classic and the best ive had in a very long time, nice snug little restaurant with a warm welcome and extensive menu to please all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR SEAFOOD LOVERS
M. E.
Fish and chips was amazing and the portion was enormous. Could have been shared. The outside space is perfect for lunch but the inside is also beautiful. Really good service.
A. W.
Literally one of the best most relaxing lunches. A glorious late Sunday lunch. Sea bass and risotto was an exquisite cocktail of deliciousness.
The pistachio profiteroles were beyond ...... really really worth a visit.
S. A.
Great seafood, worth every penny. Perfect outdoor seating in the sunshine.
M. B.
I'm gonna keep this really short: i've been eating and working in fine dining restaurants for many years...this is one of them, the food is always outstanding, the ingredients always fresh and the decor and character is what MAKES this place an amazing experience for the diner.
To all the people who mentioned the decor, maybe you belong in a totally white, sterile and boring place like you probably are...there are a lot of restaurants out there that have no personality at all, and it's great to dine in a flamboyant, decadent, and bohemian place like English's.
To me it perfectly represents Brighton, and it's my favourite restaurant in town.
It is also very affordable, i often wonder how they can do a 2 course menu that good for 15 quid!!
I can't recommend it enough, and i can't wait to go there for lunch with my partner tomorrow...long live English's of Brighton!!!
E. P.
Booked by my husband for our Wedding Anniversary 💒 we love seafood and this is the best of the best, lovely attentive staff. Would highly recommend.
S. S.
👍
J. P.
The place has a very nice atmosphere. Our waiter Tony who is from Hungry did an amazing job. We will be back just because of his service.
L. E. M.
Best fish and chips I've had AND GLUTEN FREE. Superb service, warm and welcoming staff, amazing food! Definitely will visit again 😁
W. W.
Average food. But such nice atmosphere there with music playing as background. Please do prepare some changes on your hand to give to musician at the end of their playing. They deserve it.
P. M.
Amazing food, great service. The best fish restaurant in Brighton by miles. The sharing hot platter was fantastic.
J. F.
I've been many times and the food and service are always very good. It's great that this traditional Brighton restaurant, that has been in the same place for years, continues to impress.
G. M.
Service somewhat slow but lovely food and ideal for a special lunch
J. M.
The food and service were mostly excellent and the restaurant had a great atmosphere. Don't order the lobster though, it isn't a lobster but a very expensive langoustine!
N. T.
An oyster bar with no oysters was not a promising start. A few irritations along the way made it a less than perfect place for our Silver Wedding meal (which we didn't tell them about).
K. R.
What a great little place ! The food is stunning and the staff super helpful and friendly ! I will come back again for sure,I'm very happy that I discover this amazing restaurant!
S. C.
Stunning food, lovely staff, definitely worth a visit

Always book English when we are down Brighton for the weekend, with my taxi driver husband , absolutely love it !! Fresh food beautiful oysters, and Johnathan the most knowledgeable and best bar man there is
H. M.
I'm a Brighton local and English's Lobster Thermidor is one of my favourite dinners in the city. In the sunshine this place is absolutely beautiful when sat outside and in the winter it's a lovely cosy treat!
R. G.
Really nice food, excellent service. Went there for a birthday celebration and we were very well looked after. Will be back.
G. H.
Delicious seafood, great atmosphere and superb service.
J. K. A.
We had a wonderful meal last Friday and had invited friends to join us for lunch on Sunday, the Fish meals I have to say are really beautiful and the sauces superb, our friends really enjoyed their meal, so if you are looking for a great fish meal in a delightful atmospheric intimate restaurant, then do think about English's
B. A.
Amazing restaurant. The osyters were so fresh. A brilliant menu. Staff so helpful. A real find. Would definitely return.

Third visit and each time food has been excellent. Service very good. Will return on our next trip to Brighton.
A. b.
really enjoyed, food, service and location!! will be back as soon as i can....absolutely loved it
T.
The location; (a cute pedestrianised square often with live Street performance) the oysters are fab. The draught prosecco, the excellent service always. The oyster bar, and most importantly, the food; steak or seafood is always great.
m. p.
Absolutely impeccable service and a lovely meal, very kind to my husband's mother and generous with the puddings! We'll be back again soon.
D. M.
I have a person bias towards one of my favourite restaraunts. The venue is made-up of a number of old fistermen's cottages in one of the oldest parts of Brighton; consequently, access for the disabled is limited and I suggest calling them before going if this might be an issue. A long established fish restaraunt with a historical association with politicians and the thesbian set. No parking available at the venue and even the closest is something of a walk (simply because it's in the heart of the old part of the city (The Lanes)).
D. T.
Absolutely fantastic..great service and delicious food.. pleasant atmosphere, will definitely be going back..
S. K.
Food and wine was excellent. Lovely little restaurant. The staff were very helpful and attentive
L. C.
Great food and excellent staff... and the Eton Mess....WOW!!!
N. L.
A truly lovely, intimate restaurant with 'proper' service and fantastic food. If you're in Brighton don't miss it, it is like a step back in time- albeit it is very 'cosy', but that adds t it's charm
S. C.
This is a fantastic family run seafood restaurant. Old school, and none the worse for that! Love the service, a real gem in the Lanes.
A. E.
Generous portions, lovely seafood. Recommend the diver sole and oysters
J. W.
Lovely food and atmosphere, great place for seafood and a glass of vino outside, normally have live band playing nearby which is nice

Excellent oysters, rocks and natives. Good crab and other seafood. Prosecco on draft and nice selection of wines. A Brighton treat.

Totally overpriced. Food was just okay, nothing special but very expensive. However the waiter was very professional and efficient.
